Book Description
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard
Anyone who despairs of the individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

3 Cups of tea.......2007-06-25
This was one of the most incredible books I have ever read. It is a must read for all Amercians. Greg Mortenson is a truly amazing man. His drive to help humanity is a lesson we all need to learn. He saw people for what they truly are and made tremendous strides to improve their quality of life. His drive and ambition has inspired me to make even the most menial steps to help my neighobors across the globe. This is one book, you can't afford to let slip you by.
A lesson for everyone.......2007-06-23
Greg Mortenson should be an inspiration to everyone. Instead of just talking about making changes, he has gone out and actually made changes. He has also seen the people of Central Asia and Muslims for the passionate and caring people they are and not the terrorists that others have made all of them out to be. This book opens up a world that so many westerners are completely oblivious to, and teaches us how the problem of terrorism will most effectively be solved.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's a great story and a great inspiration for how people can contribute and help with empowering people to create a better environment for others and themselves.
What are YOU doing to make the world a better place?.......2007-06-20
That is an easy question for Greg Mortenson to answer. By building schools under the premise that educated people have alternatives other than terrorism, Greg is definitely making the world a better place. By now, you should already know the story line. The book itself is a great read, and it makes you wonder if someone should suggest Greg Mortenson's name for Secretary of State (or perhaps, Secretary of Diplomacy).
I highly recommend you read this book, and think, "What am I doing (or going to do) to make the world a better place?" This book has certainly made me ask myself that question.

Explosively Powerful.......2007-06-20
The author, Greg Mortenson is an awesome man and in my book has achieved the level of a Ghandi in our world. If we all would take his road who knows what we could achieve in world peace. He will earn the Nobel Peace Prize for his selfless action on behalf of children. I would also like to mention his wife who is, I think, a true hero. How many women would share their husbands to further this cause? What love for him she must have. I hope that his 2 children will come to understand their Dad and his contributions to the world despite the fact that he was (is) absent from them much of the time.
The book was a powerful read which was helped by the co-author, for whom the writing was not always easy. He has the ability to tell a story with white knuckle features--crispy and clearly as the wind and view from atop K2.
Inspirational.......2007-06-19
I think this is a must read for Americans. I think it provides an alternate point of view and some actual solutions for some of the problems in Asia. I am tired of hearing and seeing the same point of view through American media and I feel inspired to action after reading this book. We forget how truly wealthy we are in this country.

Book Description
Known around the globe for her indefatigable work on behalf of the poor, the sick, and the dying, Mother Teresa has devoted her life to giving hope to the hopeless in more than one hundred and twenty countries. She inspires us all to find a way to translate our spiritual beliefs into action in the world. How has one woman accomplished so much? And what are the guiding principles that have enabled this humble nun to so profoundly effect the lives of millions?
Now, in her own words, Mother Teresa shares the thoughts and experiences that have led her to do her extraordinary charitable work. A candid look at her everyday life--at the very simplicity and self-sacrifice that give her the strength to move mountains--A Simple Path gives voice to the remarkable spirit who has dedicated her life to the poorest among us.
Just as important as her beliefs are how they are put into action in the world, and A Simple Path also tells the story of the founding of the Missionaries of Charity, their purpose and practice, and the results of their tireless work. Through faith, surrender, and prayer, the missionaries live to serve others; they have improved the lives of countless souls and given dignity to the dying. Their mission has also produced a ripple effect, spreading human compassion to communities where there is need.
Through these examples, as well as the uplifting words and guiding prayers of Mother Teresa and those who work with her, everyone can learn how to walk the simple path that Mother Teresa has laid out for us, to help create a truly kinder world for the future.
A Simple Path is a unique spiritual guide for Catholics and non-Catholics alike: full of wisdom and hope from the one person who has given us the greatest model of love in action in our time.

Dave from Carlsbad.......2007-01-15
Mother Teresa's mission and how she answered her calling shine through this as a great example for us to follow. What is revealed in this book is how we can each follow the simple path to peace in our own lives. Not having to sell all we possess and serve the poorest of the poor as she did, but in our own lives with those we meet. A few of the writings, including The Simple Path, are so moving to me, that I bought many copies of this book to give to others. What better gift could we offer someone than a path to peace? Hope you find it too.
Inspiring.......2004-06-17
I bought this book about 6 years ago. It's one of those books that you pick up and cannot put down. I was totally enthralled with it from the first few pages and every chapter became more and more inspiring. I was not a Christian when I read this book, so it's not just for believers. Rather it is a book for those who long for something more in their lfe, to walk in a deeper yet more 'simple' way. All of the chapters such as the ones on prayer, love, faith etc touched me deeply and even though it's been several years since I read it, I would read it again most definately. I lent it to someone and have never been given it back. I may just have to buy it again! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
A good reminder.......2004-06-01
This book is a good reminder of how to love. Many of us discuss, debate and guess at what real love looks like. This book reminds us that love can range from serving to just holding someone who is living their last days. This book often wisely suggests that we could preach less and serve more. Inspiring.
To understand, rather than be understood........2003-10-01
The book is perfectly titled. Mother Teresa's biographical information is minimal and the book does not canonize her. Apart from introducing the thoughts of volunteers who work with the Missionaries of Charity, her own words are few. What we find are simple views of a simple path, and beauty in simplicity. This is not the story of a famous nun, it is the story of a way of seeing ones world and of living without self-focus. Mother Teresa, and those who work in the missions that she and others have established and conducted, convey an attractive invitation to service to others. The path has been set before us in the Gospels of Matthew (25:34-40) and Luke (10:30-37). This small volume contains no rancorous sectarian, philosophical, or theological arguments. The themes are peace, love, joy, and fearless devotion to the welfare of others. The simple path is well summarized in the words of St Francis of Assisi:
"Lord grant that I seek rather to comfort than to be comforted,
To understand than to be understood;
To love than to be loved . . ."
The book makes little mention of the opposing worldview, but I briefly will. The opposite worldview is the ever-popular celebration of slavery to self. There are, of course, many variations on this theme. One notices how offended, even angered, the culture of self can be when it is rejected, in this case by Mother Teresa. Articles and books have been published which denigrate her, and she has been called a hypocrite. I doubt she terribly cared. A sign on the wall of Shishu Bhavan children's home in Calcutta reads in part:
"People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered,
Love them anyway
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,
Do good anyway . . .
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,
Do good anyway . . ."
What a humble, beautiful soul she was!.......2002-05-08
This book truly touched my heart and transcends the materialistic view that I previously exalted.

Though Mother Teresa's words may be spare, her good deeds are abundant. The messages in this lovely collection--directed at coworkers, sisters, and others eager to hear the words of someone who lived the challenge she presented to others--are sure to provide inspiration for anyone who reads them. The quotes, stories, and prayers are a testament to the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner's generosity and strength of spirit: "Good works are links that form a chain of love"; "I never will understand all the good that a simple smile can accomplish"; "Before judging the poor, we have to examine with sincerity our own conscience." Mother Teresa's words and deeds fortified and inspired the poor, the dying, and the suffering. These powerful messages, combined with black-and-white photos of this highly regarded woman doing the work she loved, make for a truly unforgettable book.
Book Description
The legendary Mother Teresa's work for—and among—the poor has become the yardstick by which the entire world measures compassion, generosity, and selflessness. Her words and actions have inspired millions of people from every race and religion and country to help the poor and needy, a legacy that is her gift to all mankind for generations to come.
From 1950, when she founded the order of Missionaries of Charity, to winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and then, in 1985, being awarded the Medal of Freedom—the United States' highest civilian award—to her final days, Mother Teresa served the world as a beacon shedding the light of hope, comfort, and peace on all.
Mother Teresa: In My Own Words is a timeless testament to the power of her words. Here are the same quotes, stories, and prayers that helped strengthen and inspire the poor, the dying, the suffering, and the doubting who she met during her lifetime, and that will continue to strengthen and inspire all who read them.

Mother Teresa: In My Own Words.......2007-01-17
Enjoyed this very much. Easy to pick up and use when you have only a few minutes to reflect - at night or in the morning.
hard to put into words the excellence in Mother Teresa's thoughts.......2006-08-18
She remains one of my favorite "Christ in person" figures of the 20th century. Classic.
Truly a Saint.......2006-07-29
This is book was so beautifully written. I gained a greater respect for Blessed Mother Teresa.
No matter what religion you are, whether you believe or not, this is such an inspirational book.
A person, among many, who gave up so much, but never showed any dismay. "A Cheerful Giver".
Mother Teresa's light still shines........2006-02-25
This contains Mother Teresa's spirituality for a reasonable price.
Consistent messenger of hope.......2005-11-27
This slight volume of Mother's sayings and writings perfectly captures the laser-focused love she had for the poor. The single-heartedness of her vision is hard to understand. She never wavered from her conviction that in the poor, she served Christ. For those of us who live in affluent lands, she has a message of hope as well. Love those who are lonely, even in the midst of their riches.
As she says, we will be judged, Christian and non-Christian alike, on the degree to which we acted toward the poor.

The authors, who worked closely with Mother Teresa during her lifetime, have drawn together stories and prayers inspired by the missionary, who worked tirelessly on behalf of India's poor with her sisters of charity. Each day of the year is assigned a brief story or blessing: A child goes without sugar so Mother Teresa may have it; a truckload of bread miraculously arrives for starving Indians when the rice has run out. Many of the passages are quotes from Mother Teresa herself, and all of them challenge the reader to live up to her saintly view of humanity and suffering. If the day-by-day approach doesn't fit, there's an easy-to-browse index, organized by theme ("cheerfulness," "humility," "suffering"). Her standards are high, however, and normal sinners may find her words more challenging than uplifting.
Book Description
A treasury of meditations, prayers, and reflections, one for each day of the year, from one of the most revered figures of our time.
The provocative ideas and touching insights found in The Joy in Loving spring from incidents in Mother Teresa's own remarkable life. She speaks of men and women who have lived and died uncomplainingly, even in the midst of great poverty and deprivation; of wealthy businessmen whose indifference has been transformed into compassion and charity, and of her encounters with people and governments around the globe. Through all of this, Mother Teresa emphasizes the need for a disciplined, loving family life, for "in the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world." Drawing on more than seventy years of selfless service to the poorest of the poor, she discusses the importance of work and prayer, charity and service, the right to life and, above all, the need to love--unconditionally and absolutely.

Hear Ye Hear Ye .......2006-12-22
I purchased this book for my dear mother for Christmas. It arrived in the mail today - damaged - because nothing was put in box on top of the book to protect it. There are no phone numbers given by Amazon so that a person can call to complain. The Help pages on this website say that there is a "contact" line to click on the Help pages, but that is not true. Amazon does not want to hear anything negative..they just want our money. Do we really want to do business with people like this?
Fills the heart.......2005-08-03
I love Mother Teresa's philosophy of life, and a daily dose of her thoughts and prayers do wonders for my perspective in life. I am remembering to smile, pray, love...very touching devotional.
Alive and well.......2005-01-29
Open this book anywhere . . . and your heart is flooded with light. Or, does it affect others as it affects me, I wonder? Is this just a personal phenomenon? After all, I met her on two occasions. Perhaps that has something to do with it? On her last (unannounced) visit to this city, --- she offered me her hand, and looked me in the eye - and hasn't my memory played tricks on me, about that precious moment?
I was one person among 12, waiting on the street, outside her home for indigent men (the first one she established in North America). She emerged from that humble, two-story dwelling on Pritchard Avenue, in Winnipeg's poor north end: My two young sons were the last ones she greeted -- placing her hands on their heads and smiling with love - then, looking beyond them, for the obvious parent or guardian of these youngsters, she spotted me; and she offered me her hand. And I took it - I remember it was warm and her grip was surprisingly firm and . . . well . . . the taste of the air around her was unlike anything I can ever put in mere words. Yet, there are some odd things about my memory of that moment.
I distinctly remember thinking she was beautiful. But how can that be? In photos, she isn't physically attractive at all -- is she? Yet that is my memory of her in the flesh -- radiantly beautiful!
Another odd thing: I remember her as being my height - six feet -- as she looked me in the eye and smiled warmly. Yet in photographs, she looks closer to four foot nine. (Princess Diana towers over her in the last photo taken of the two women together, shortly before they died, within a few days of each other.)
So is it just me? - this feeling that Mother Teresa is addressing me personally each day in the pages of this book? Or does she speak directly to your heart too?
Let's take just three of her thoughts - the ones for yesterday, today and tomorrow. Let this be the test! If they don't speak to you personally, don't buy this book! But if they do resonate within your being . . . then you may agree, this is the "best book of its kind."

27 January
The very fact that God has placed a certain soul in our way is a sign that God wants us to do something for him or her. It is not chance; it has been planned by God. We are bound by conscience to help him or her.
28 January
We have small `listening groups' of co-workers who go to the homes of old people and sit down with them and let them talk. Very old people love to have someone listen to them and let them talk, even if they have to tell the story of 30 years ago. To listen, when nobody else wants to listen, is a very beautiful thing.
29 January
It is easy to smile at people outside your own home. It is so easy to take care of the people you don't know well. It is difficult to be thoughtful and kind, and to smile and be loving to your own in the house day after day, especially when we are tired and in a bad temper or bad mood. We all have these moments and that is the time that Christ comes to us in a distressing disguise.
LOVE COUNQUERS ALL.......2001-10-20
Mother Teresa did not write this as a book of daily reflections, rather it is a sharing by her, in speeches she has made, anecdotes she has related, of her life experiences. In other words, it is real, authentic and practical.
The readings take less than a minute a day, but the idea is one that can be chewed on all day long. I learned from Mother Teresa that the greatest poverty in the world in not want of food but want of love. I learned from her that love is unlimited, is diffusive of itself. When we give love we don't divide, we double. I learned from her not to give just from the tips of my fingers, but of my substance, and of myself.
What wisdom this great lady had, born of her love and her humilty. In summary, this book is a treasure.
A little gold mine........2001-09-08
Day by day, this book gives you a simple thought to carry around with you and put into practice for the rest of the day. It profoundly influenced me, shifting my focus from navel-gazing to other people. It gives perspective and improves the quality of life.

What's next--The Girl Scouts: The Untold Story? How could anybody write a debunking book about Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity order? Well, in this little cruise missile of a book, Hitchens quickly establishes that the idea is not without point. After all, what is Mother Teresa doing hanging out with a dictator's wife in Haiti and accepting over a million dollars from Charles Keating? The most riveting material in the book is contained in two letters: one from Mother Teresa to Judge Lance Ito--then weighing what sentence to dole out to the convicted Keating--which cited all the work Keating has done "to help the poor," and another from a Los Angeles deputy D.A., Paul Turley, back to Mother Teresa that eloquently stated that rather than working to reduce Keating's sentence, she should return the money he gave her to its rightful owners, the defrauded bond-holders. (Significantly, Mother Teresa never replied.) And why do former missionary workers and visiting doctors consistently observe that the order's medical practices seem so inadequate, especially given all the money that comes in? (Hitchens acidly observes that on the other hand, Mother Teresa herself always manages to receive world-class medical care.) Hitchens's answer is that Mother Teresa is first and foremost interested not in providing medical treatment, but in furthering Catholic doctrine and--quite literally--becoming a saint.
Book Description
Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, feted by politicians, the Church and the world's media, Mother Teresa of Calcutta appears to be on the fast track to sainthood. But what, asks Christopher Hitchens, makes Mother Teresa so divine? In a frank expose of the Teresa cult, Hitchens details the nature and limits of one woman's mission to the world's poor. He probes the source of the heroic status bestowed upon an Albanian nun whose only declared wish is to serve God. He asks whether Mother Teresa's good works answer any higher purpose than the need of the world's privileged to see someone, somewhere, doing something for the Third World. He unmasks pseudo-miracles, questions Mother Teresa's fitness to adjudicate on matters of sex and reproduction, and reports on a version of saintly ubiquity which affords genial relations with dictators, corrupt tycoons and convicted frauds.

Time to cull the cult.........2007-06-20
As someone who discovered Hitchen's by watching the TV show BS, and also having started recently reading some of his other material(Letters to.., God is not..) I already knew most of what I was to find in this book. While Hitchens has become a favorate author recently, I find having reviewed a great deal of his material that alot of it tends to repeat itself.
While I don't want to seriously downplay the enjoyment of the book to quickly, I did feel like he was trying to stretch out the material a bit far. The negetive aspects of any single person in the public sphere can usually only be so far documented, I do think that perhaps the Mother Teresa fraud may of served Hitchens better if he chosen to make it just a smaller part of a larger book on a larger subject. I would love to see Hitchens do a book taking on solely the Catholic Church for instance(although, now he has taken on religion as a whole, an anwser to every thinking man's prayers). However, those interested in Mother Teresa, religious criticism or just the general works of Hitchens will find themselves engrossed quickly into this book, and barely 100 pages, one can finish it in a couple spare hours with little problem.
Recommended.
Unconvincing.......2007-05-14
I read this over two years ago, am surprised that I have not somehow donated it or relegated it to the recycle bin. I don't think it is trash material; it is worth the time to read over once, but not worth keeping around for lending to friends and family.
I was hugely disappointed with the book, was hoping he could shed some light on what I've been perceiving as a problem within christianity which I've sensed but have not pinpointed its source. What I recall is that the cult of Mother Teresa seemed to be more at fault than whatever flaws she had herself. The book raised more questions in my mind without supplying me a lot of answers. I felt Mr. Hitchens research was a bit lacking, although he does make a few good points. In his chapter, "Good Works and Heroic Virtues", he presents two letters concerning Charles Keating and his S & L scandal which came before Judge Ito in Los Angeles in 1992. One letter is from Mother Teresa to Judge Ito, the other from a prosecutor in the L.A. County's District Attorney's office to Mother Teresa. I was not surprised by the statements that were made in both letters and not surprised that Mother Teresa did not reply. Protestant though I am, I don't think I would have replied either. Other than presenting the evidence that millions of dollars have been donated to her for her charities, and that there is no accounting for where the money actually went, I am not convinced that Mother Teresa is directly responsible for that fact.
Next one up is Jesus.......2007-04-29
Hitchens is no doubt an entertaining writer. Not always thorough, but clever. His attack on Mother Teresa for her associations with dictators and others of ill repute reminds one of the criticism that Christ is reported to have endured for eating with prostitutes and tax collectors. One can only imagine Hitchens take on the life of Christ, who reportedly came to save sinners and not the just, who had no need of salvation.
Hitchens' case against Mother Teresa: Entertaining and Provocative, but Ultimately Unconvincing.......2007-04-21
You gotta love the title "The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice" it's irreverent, funny, sacrilegious, and not a little bit smug. Unless you're a devout Catholic, it can't fail to amuse, and to provoke. And that's the point.
In a thin little polemic, Hitchens blasts at the Catholic Icon in an attack that's high on rhetoric but unfortunately low on facts. He can't be bothered to even mention Teresa's birth name (Agnes Bojaxhiu) until page 79 (of 98) and then he tells us remarkably little about her; he tells us that her organization, `Missionaries of Charity' numbers "some 4,000 nuns and 40,000 lay workers" (p. 14) but says almost nothing about how it is organized, how it operates and what it actually does. Instead, he assaults her with labels: she's a "religious fundamentalist, a political operatives, a primitive sermonizer" (p. 11) Her motives are "questionable" (p. 37). The point of her endeavors was to promote a "cult" of "death and suffering and subjugation" (p.41)
Hitchens has three lines of attack on Mother Teresa: I'll list them in increasing order of credibility. First, Hitchens argues that although Teresa claimed to be above (or "beyond") politics (p.86), she actually championed publicly numerous conservatives causes - primarily the opposition to the "unholy trinity" of abortion, divorce and contraception. Second, Teresa associated with and lent credibility to various questionable characters, including the wife of Haitian dictators "Baby Doc" Duvalier, corrupt US businessmen, and Nancy Reagan. Finally, Hitchens argues that Teresa's various enterprises sacrificed the wellbeing of her patients for various metaphysical, one might even say aesthetical, goals.
Attacking Mother Teresa for her conservative views is both silly and unfair. The positions she took on abortion, contraception and divorce are mainstream Catholic views. I admit that in my view those positions vary between absurdity and cruelty, yet they are commonplace Catholics opinions and it seems unreasonable to single out Teresa for holding them and for speaking out on them. She was, after all, a Nun. To expect her to spout Hitchens' Liberal views is ridiculous.
Hitchens makes a good case that Teresa might have chosen the people she associated with more carefully, and might have done better to tone down her rhetorical championing of them. But everyone who sets out to make a difference in the world must deal with the people it is populated with; one is bound to be friendly with some less then perfect individuals, and the ones Hitchens come up with are not exceptionally unsavory. One suspects that had Teresa actually associated with the true monstrous leaders of the twentieth century (and alas, there were many of those), Hitchens would have gladly informed us of it. That he has to satisfy himself with such little fish - a Hawaiian dictator, a couple of American con men - surely speaks for something.
The most serious allegation is that Mother Teresa's help to the poor was seriously compromised by her metaphysical, aesthetical considerations: that the poor are suffering with Christ, and that their suffering plays a role in the grand scheme of things. Thus Hitchens quotes a Doctor who visited one of her clinics and observed lack of elementary medical competence (p.38) a volunteer in Calcutta saw used needless washed under cold water and then reused, without the staff even bothering to sterilize them (p. 40). The allegation is that Teresa cared about baptizing the dying more then saving them, about saving souls more then mending bodies.
It's a serious charge, and some of the evidence Hitchens presents is suggestive, but it's far from enough to condemn Teresa. Heading a huge organization, Teresa cannot be responsible for details in every shelter for the poor and the dying. And although Hitchens suggests that Teresa has huge resources at her disposal, he presents very little evidence about her organization financial means and expenditures. It's likely that the organization has savings - it's simply too large to go without them. But Hitchens does not come close to proving that Teresa could have done substantially more, or that she intentionally neglected the care of patients.
Furthermore, one must always remember that Teresa was a Nun, and that hers is a religious organization. Spending considerable sums of money on religious artifacts, and choosing stuff for their religious rather then medical qualifications would very reasonable from her perspective. Her mandate must make her care for people's souls at least as much as for their bodies, and it is unfair to attack her if she did that.
Hitchens writes well, and scores some points against Mother Teresa. Uncritical worship of her, as of anyone, is not advisable. But as objectionable as Teresa's rhetoric might have been at times, as foreign as her philosophy was, Hitchens does not prove that she was not a dedicated crusader for the poor. But although we find her not guilty, the seeds of doubt are there; The case against Mother Teresa deserves better advocacy then Christopher Hitchens's.
He just doesn't get it.......2006-09-10
The problem with Mother Teresa's critics is that they attempt to hold her up as some sort of glorified social worker or political leader. She was a religious. She wasn't out to solve poverty, but to council and comfort... indeed, love the poorest of the poor, and to teach others to do the same. Critics who claim the sisters are "sheep" who "blindly follow" their leader again do not understand religious life. There is an oath of obedience, and you follow instruction, happily and without question. If you want to be an independant helping poor people, then become a social worker. These are different callings and different lives.

If No Greater Love doesn't soften your heart, nothing will. Rather than proselytizing, Mother Teresa gives simple encouragement to love and give and sacrifice. The anecdotes she tells--of the woman who calls her crippled son "Teacher of Love," or the child who prefers to live with her mother under a tree to living in the relative comfort of Mother Teresa's home--evoke a bittersweet tenderness in the reader, a feeling that Mother Teresa is correct in saying that we must conquer the world not with bombs but with love.
Book Description
No Greater Love is the essential wisdom of Mother Teresa the most accessible, intimate, and inspiring book of her teachings. Thematically arranged to present her revolutionary vision of Christianity in its graceful simplicity, the book features her thoughts on love, generosity, forgiveness, prayer, service, and what it means to be a Christian. A passionate testament to deep hope and abiding faith in God, No Greater Love celebrates the life and work of one of the world's most revered spiritual teachers.

Stunning In Its Simplicity.......2006-10-02
Mother Teresa speaks in her own words on subjects such as Prayer, Love, Giving, Poverty and Suffering. Her teachings are presented without adornment, in simple English. This remarkable lady believed in serving God by serving others--the poorest of the poor. She founded a worldwide order of sisters who live in poverty among the poor they serve, and who treat the poor with the respect and dignity that they sorely need. She did not believe in "evangelizing," except by service and example. As a result her missionaries have been accepted and treated with great respect in remarkably diverse places throughout the world.
In this slender volume Mother Teresa's thoughts are presented without commentary, footnotes or sources. Just her words, stunning in their simplicity. Stunning too in her literal application of Jesus' own teaching--to give everything to the poor--everything--and follow him. There is a brief interview with Mother Teresa and the briefest possible autobiographical sketch. I wish there had been more.
This beautiful little book made a profound impression on me and made me want to read more. I recommend it highly to you as well. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
No Greater Love.......2006-08-15
This is a lovely book containing the sweet and heartfelt words of a simple and saintly woman. Mother Teresa speaks directly about loving one another in a Christ like manner. Her words on the importance of compassion cover the tenants of all faiths. A very enjoyable book that is best read in a peaceful or quiet environment, where you can absorb her words of love.
Simply inspiring........2006-05-19
I have always admired Mother Teresa, but I didn't know much about her other than her being a nun who worked with the poor in India. As I grew in my faith, I wanted to learn more about her, so I found this book.
It is very well written and inspiring. Each chapter has a theme. It starts with two quotes: One from a saint or from Mother Teresa, and the other from the Bible. She then reflects on the topic - e.g. Prayer, On Being Holy, Poverty, Love, Jesus, etc. I felt that her combination of conversational prose, poems and prayers, anecdotes, and scripture was in perfect proportion for understanding her wisdom. For example, I felt she used Scripture perfectly to emphasize a point without it feeling like verses were just being "thrown around" just to use them. Similarly, she gives wonderful anecdotes from her experience with working with the poor which demonstrate her love and provide us with an example of how we can grow closer to God. Each chapter is about 6-7 pages long and the text is not too dense. I found each chapter perfect for reading in 10 minutes then reflecting and praying afterwards.
This book is highly recommended to anyone looking to learn more about Christianity and Mother Teresa specifically. She will inspire you to live a holier and loving life.
A true Saint.......2003-09-18
Reading this book brought tears to my eyes just based on the sheer love for mankind this woman radiates. Besides being a touching account of what her day to day life was like of being of service for the sick and poor of the world, it is a great book of guidance and wisdom from a Saint who really followed the path of Christ from moment to moment every day of her life. One of the best reads ever as a source of Spiritual guidance and wisdom.
Incredibly Inspiring.......2003-02-24
The title of this review says it all. My husband and I both enjoyed reading it, learning that even Mother Teresa faced challenges and also hearing the advice she offered to others. This is a book I read some time ago, then picked up again this year, and I was amazed at how much I got out of it on a re-read. Some of her words just stick in your mind and come back to inspire and uplift you (me anyway) on challenging days. I recommend this book to anyone, especially anyone who feels they want more of God in their own life.

Nice Little Book to Read.......2007-01-18
I bought this book for my wife and she likes it. She said that the variety of reflections in it are quite good. She carries it around in her purse and she also reads it at home.
So good I bought two. .......2007-01-17
I bought this book for my Mother for Christmas. She just loved it, so much so, that she insisted I buy a copy for myself.
I'm really enjoying it. The effort made regarding history, reasons, superstitions etc, as well as the personal note from Mike regarding his experience with St. Therese makes the book practical as well as inspirational.
The stories prior to the Novenas are perfect.
A book to be treasured...........2007-01-08
I was expecting the usual novena book and was wondering why I had ordered it when I already had so many. But as I thumbed through the book I was fascinated with each little story attached to the individual novenas. The foreward and introduction was fascinating as well because I was not all that familiar with the history of novenas. I enjoying reading how they progressed from prayers for the dead to weekly "social nights" in church and finally to private novenas. I think my favorite novena from this book will be the "Quickie Novena" by Mother Theresa. If you don't have 9 days to do a novena, you just do this one 9 times in one sitting. There are also novenas that I had never seen before. Even if you, like me, have a stack of novena books, you will enjoy this one. My only worry is that the pages are super-thin. Keep your coffee cups away!
Michael Dubruiel Has A Gift.......2007-01-08
Michael Dubruiel has the gift of being able to easily explain elements, teachings and practices of Catholicism to people well versed in the Church as well as those who may not fully understand all of the Church's nuances. In his book, "The Church's Most Powerful Novenas," Dubruiel is able to explain what novenas are and elaborate on their importance. From there he lists several of the most powerful novenas. Each novena is preceeded by a very informative explanation of its genesis and its development.
A lesser author would risk leaving those unfamiliar with this topic feeling bored or ignorant. Faithful readers might be left thinking there isn't anything new here. However, Dubruiel's direction leaves the reader feeling refreshed and thankful that there are more prayers to be learned for various needs and causes. He gives a brief background on each novena as well as some powerful examples that resulted from them. In the course of one book, Michael Dubruiel not only gives the reader hope, he demonstrates the success that have already occurred. Any believer is bound to take solace and hope from reading these printed pages.
Bouquet of Devotions to Invigorate Your Prayer Life.......2003-01-16
There's a cute story about Saint Theresa of Lisieux who complained to God about falling asleep during daily devotions at her French Carmelite convent because she apparently had trouble staying focused. "Mention Your Request Here: The Church's Most Powerful Novenas" may be the answer to Saint Theresa's plea for more spirit in daily meditations. Michael Dubruiel presents a varied bouquet of daily devotions ranging from traditional to modern petitions. Most interesting are the addresses provided for the North American shrines where the particular saints or religious orders supporting the special novenas are located. For example, I'm delighted to learn the meditations in honor of Saint Maximillan Kolbe and to learn where his shrine is located in Libertyville, Il. Traditional meditations to the Miraculous Medal are nostalgic for those who remember those continuous novenas during pre-Vatican II. Updated novenas to the French North American Martyrs and Native American Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha bring some interesting diversity to the collection as well. "Mention Your Request Here" is a delightful instructional about how to improve daily communications with God rather than a "novena book", or a ritualistic series of petitions asking for saintly favors. Indeed, Saint Theresa, the "little flower" is, quite likely, very well pleased with Dubruiel's impressive prayer collection, which, of course, includes her special devotion.

I Have 1 Problem With This Book.......2006-07-23
The book as a whole was pretty good, but I do have one major problem with this book. There were some instances where the book stated that Kenneth Taylor had probably faced some kind of sexual abuse in his past, and then at the very end of the book it quotes his mother as saying that she had heard that some mothers performed fellatio on their infant children to ease teething pain.
To me this made it seem like the author was trying to imply that perhaps Kenneth's mother had been the one to sexually abuse him. Maybe I am just super-sensitive, but that's the way I took it and I was somewhat offended by it.
Excellent.......2004-07-13
I've re-read this book many times - which means it is well-written and fascinating. Peter Maas obtained as much information as he could so that readers would be able to understand the background of the characters in this true crime story. Although it leaves you wanting to know more about Ken's parents, especially his mother (how did she turn out so differently than her own mother, Jean?), he does the best he can...apparently in this case, a psychopath was born, not made. Some of the people involved (Marilyn), you just want to smack upside the head...I also wondered why and how could Therese stay with Ken knowing that he beat her so badly on their honeymoon that she almost died. Why did she refuse to see the truth? She paid for it with her life.
Great true crime book.......2002-01-27
Peter Maas is a good, solid writer. This is the book that was the basis of the TV movie starring Valerie Bertinelli. However, there is much more detail in the book. For example, there is more of the background of the victim and the dentist/murderer. It also seems that the victim did use cocaine, although Maas does strees that it was only "recreational." (???--what is recreational?) Also, he admits that he beat her up in Mexico. It's a page burner.
Chilling and sad.......2002-01-23
I saw the 1991 miniseries of "In A Child's Name" before I had ever read the book, and I must say that, in both cases, I was saddened and angered at the murder of a beautiful, innocent mother and also by the manipulation of an innocent child, who was ultimately the real victim, along with his mother. Ultimately, however, I was moved by the family's coming together to raise the baby boy left by his loving mother and cold-hearted father. The book does go deeper into the horror of what happened after the young mother's murder than the miniseries. However, both tell the tragic but ultimately uplifting story about abuse, murder, cold-hearted manipulation, and ultimate strength and love.
A Must-Read.......2002-01-21
Entralling from the first page to the last. If you've seen the movie, DEFINATELY read the book. Michael Ontkean's portrayal of Ken Taylor is terrific. Being from Indina, I was especially interested due to the custody battle that came as a result of Taylor bludgeoning his wife to death. The fact that this story is true is what makes it so horrible. My heart ached, not only for the child, but for Teresa's family members who were put through not only having to deal with her murder, but the idea of her child being in the custody of Ken Taylor's parents. Louise Fletcher, who plays Ken Taylor's mother gives a chilling reference to a mother turning a ridiculously blind eye to the fact that her son was a manipulative cold blooded murderer with very strange sexual appetites (records indicated that calls were made from the scene of the murder to 900-sex lines while Teresa lay dead on the floor). A chilling account.

Book Description
While the good works of Mother Teresa have been universally admired, the books of her writings released to date have spoken primarily to practicing Christians, specifically Catholics. Everything Starts from Prayer: Mother Teresa's Meditations on Spiritual Life for People of All Faiths (with foreword by Larry Dossey, M.D.) is the first selection of her writings that addresses the omnipresent importance of prayer for all peopleregardless of religion, nationality, or ethnicity.
Compiler Anthony Stern, M.D. has selected and arranged Mother Teresa's inspirational prayer teachings into six distinct meditative stages on the spiritual life, integrating silence, love, faith, and service. Each section presents a building block to further our understanding of Mother Teresa's approach to the art of prayer. Taken as a whole, the book not only provides an inspirational introduction to prayer but also offers new insights into the teachings of this universally loved and revered spiritual teacher.
Customer Reviews:
You'll almost feel as if Mother Teresa is speaking to you directly!.......2006-03-21
I've long known that a book's length doesn't guarantee
that it will be worth reading . . . such is the case
with EVERYTHING STARTS FROM PRAYER: MOTHER
TERESA'S MEDITATIONS ON SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR PEOPLE
OF ALL FAITHS by Anthony Stern.
It is short, but oh so powerful . . . and as the subtitle implies, it
is applicable for people of any faith.
As I was reading it, I kept having to pause to think about
Mother Teresa was saying . . . it was almost as if she were
talking to me directly!
For example, when I'm in a lazy mood, these words always
inspire me:
Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.
Almost every page contained some other tidbit that I'll want to refer
to again--and again . . . to cite just a few others:
* There is much suffering in the world-
very much. And this material suffering
is suffering from hunger, suffering from
homelessness, from all kinds of diseases, but
I still think the greatest suffering is being
lonely, feeling unloved, just having no one.
* Examine your heart first, though,
to see if there is any lack of forgiveness
of others still inside, because how can we ask
God for forgiveness if we cannot forgive
others?
* It is so easy to be proud, harsh, moody
and selfish, but we have been created for
greater things; why stoop down to things
that will spoil the beauty of our hearts?
And, lastly, there's this one which is one of
my all-time favorites:
* We can do no great things-only small things with great love.
Simple yet deep.......2006-02-10
Everything starts with prayer means everything we do should begin with a prayer: an interview, house hunting, the day, a quick drive to the store, an exam. Such a deceptively simple title yet so profound. To start every 'thing' we do with a prayer - of help, thanks, or guidance - surely can only be wonderful for us and Him.
POWERFUL.......2005-04-16
Everything Starts from Prayer has been added to the books I use regularly. This book refreshes my spirit. If you have any value for prayer this book will pump it up (Maybe I should send a copy to Governor Schwarzenegger)! With Mother Teresa's ecumenical reach, no walls excluding anyone from prayer, I have gifted this book many times to people I know benefit. "Everything Starts from Prayer" is inspirational and one of my absolute favorites.
Transcendance Through Giving.......2004-03-30
There is nothing more needed than this kind of spirit and approach ... Dr. Stern has gloriously translated and amplified the work of another who is deserving of translation and amplification
Enlightened People Have a Bright Flame.......2003-12-20
Enlightened people dispel the darkness around them. They live more prosperously, with less stress, consider every difficulty an opportunity, and are open to new learning. This time of year is the perfect time to look over the past year and ask yourself the important questions: "Did I take time to grow spiritually, bettering myself with reading and stimulating conversations? Am I continuing to answer the questions that really matter? Did I share whatever good things I found with others, to encourage them in their quest?" We are all candles, and sometimes I have felt my flame only softly glowing, instead of brightly radiant.
I am now house-bound and not able to get around. If it wasn't for reading and personal growth, and the ability to share and participate with others through the phone and internet about the things I am learning, I would go nuts! For me, books are a key to happiness. There are many people in my situation who feel life is not worth living anymore. I have seen that spiritual health, and being in service to others in some way (even if just by sharing good information) is the key to balancing whatever else is happening in your life. That's why I am sharing some of my personal favorites with you (I'll try to keep you updated as I read new ones), words that helped me heal and fan my flame bright again! I also placed this particular review under one of the books I have read and appreciated.
1. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom (how even the little things we do can affect changes in people's lives, and by doing them, affects ours too)
2. Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life by Tiffany Snow (tools and training to access our God-Spots for supernatural gifts, has great stories about healing, afterlife, NDEs, helping FBI on 9-11, etc)
3. The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life by Twyla Tharp (helps to ease the fears of facing a blank beginning and opening the mind to new possibilities)
4. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle (accessing the deepest self by living in the present time)
5. 500 Low-Carb Recipes by Dana Carpender (actually good tasting recipes that will help you keep your physical balance, at least after the holidays!)
