Conservative talk radio host, lawyer, and frequent National Review contributor Mark R. Levin comes out firing against the United States Supreme Court in Men in Black, accusing the institution of corrupting the ideals of America's founding fathers. The court, in Levin's estimation, pursues an ideology-based activist agenda that oversteps its authority within the government. Levin examines several decisions in the court's history to illustrate his point, beginning with the landmark Marbury v. Madison case, wherein the court granted itself the power to declare acts of the other branches of government unconstitutional. He devotes later chapters to other key cases culminating in modern issues such as same-sex marriage and the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill. Like effective attorneys do, Levin packs in copious research material and delivers his points with tremendous vigor, excoriating the justices for instances where he feels strict constit utional constructivism gave way to biased interpretation. But Levin's definition of "activism" seems inconsistent. In the case of McCain-Feingold, the court declined to rule on a bill already passed by congress and signed by the president, but Levin, who thinks the bill violates the First Amendment, still accuses them of activism even when they were actually passive. To his talk-radio listeners, Levin's hard-charging style and dire warnings of the court's direction will strike a resonant tone of alarm, though the hyperbole may be a bit off-putting to the uninitiated. As an attack on the vagaries of decisions rendered by the Supreme Court and on some current justices, Men in Black scores points and will likely lead sympathetic juries to conviction. --John Moe

Book Description

Mark Levin throws the book at our own judicial system--in particular, American judges who ignore the Constitution and dismantle the rights of American citizens in everyday court proceedings. He shares jaw-dropping examples of judicial power grabs and liberal power plays by judges.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme Court is SUPREME POWER....scary...........2007-05-31

The antics of the Supreme Court (Supreme God ?) were quite eye opening, and who better to tell the story.....

Our population needs to start marching in front of the court building and making our opinions known.

This book points out the problems when people are appointed for life and then have NO ACCOUNTABILITY.

The detail about the cases cited and researched is amazing....the facts are scary, but important for everyone in America to understand that the Court can and does regularly take away in some way every liberty we think we posess.

A must reading......I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent History of How the Supreme Court is Destroying the American Constitution--One Decision At a Time.......2007-04-24

"There are some things only intellectuals are crazy enough to believe". This quote by Orwell comes to mind when, having finished Men in Black, I read here some of its reviews. One of the most voted claims that the problem with the book is polemic "masquerading" as legal scholarship. I guess then the thirty six pages of footnotes are part of the masquerading, as well as the quotes from old decisions, new decisions and letters by the founding fathers. Give me a break.

The book is not about Levin simply showing that the federal government "has done some things" that he, Levin, does not agree with. If Levin had a problem with a government policy, he would simply discuss it. Levin may be against recreational drugs, but it does not mean that he necessarily would agree with a Supreme Court decision that supports a federal prohibition and that strips from the states the right to decide on the issue. In fact, Men in Black has for example an entire chapter on _Bush v. Gore_--a decision that Levin condemns ("the U.S. Supreme Court's unprecedented intervention to restrain [the Florida Supreme Court] will reverberate ominously for years to come") despite the fact that it helped elect the candidate he probably preferred. So if you are reasonable you will see, after several examples in the book, that one big problem today is not the types of policy pronouncements the Supreme Court makes, but rather that it makes policy pronouncements. Many of the policy pronouncements it makes are none of its business; they should come from federal/state legislatures or sometimes from the executive. And worst yet, in order to make its own pronouncements, the Court often does not follow jurisprudence. After you read Men in Black, check for example the first few pages of John Roberts' dissent in _Massachusetts v. EPA_. This issue will be evident.

Obviously the Supreme Court should not always defer to the legislatures or the executive if that would violate the plain language of the constitution. But unfortunately such deference is precisely what you find in many important decisions, like _Plessy v. Fergunson_ or _Korematsu v. U.S._. The disingenuous argue that in such cases the Court did what Mark Levin advocates because the Court was "not active". But that is rubbish. Deference that violates the constitution is judicial activism because the judiciary is acting independent of what the constitution says. Not surprisingly, sometimes a decision by the Court yields an outcome in line with the constitution, but the reasoning behind the decision has little or nothing to do with the constitution.

So you can think of judicial activism as the judiciary doing its own thing: It acts when it should not or it does not act when it should. I believe the book does a superb job in making this clear and in making the case that, if we tolerate this, what is the point of having a written constitution?

3 out of 5 stars A Different Kind Of Activism.......2007-04-02

As I read this book I found it ironic that while the author spoke of the dangers of judicial activism, which I totally agree with, he doesn't see his own desire to shape the country to his own personal philosophy. I was bothered with the ability of Levin to articulate the virtues of strict interpretation of the Constitution on one hand as he advocates the Supreme Court's decisions that satisfies his own bias.

I do feel that there is an illegitimate movement to use the judiciary to change America toward a more liberal, socialistic model however; I wonder how Mr. Levin would feel if the court did the opposite and used their actions to bring about a conservative variety. After reading this book I have a strong feeling that he wouldn't complain much. His mind-set explains why activist use the courts as they do, because if they don't, he and his kind would. Some would say that this tug of war over the Constitution is a way of balancing it but I would disagree. I don't think the framers meant for that to be the case. When purchasing this book I was hoping for wisdom on the proper use of the Supreme Court as equilibrium between the branches of government but that desire was left unsatisfied.

4 out of 5 stars A difficult listen........2007-03-13

As unabridged audiobooks go, it's a long lecture. Tough to get through in one sitting. You need to re-listen to it for the lessons to be soaked in. Still, a great book!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent. Makes You Think!.......2007-02-28

Mark Levin is a dynamic talk show host that never bores the listener. In this book he has gather a tremendous amount of legalese and historical cases and has brought it all together sucessfully in a treatise that goes a long way to proving the points he wants to make. That is the the Supreme Court has overstepped its boundaries of interpreting the law of the law to making decisions that in effect create the law of the land. For the purposes of this review, I will not add any personal feelings on the matter but let Levin's book make its own points.

Law is usually a boring subject for most of us and this book is written in a way that is never boring. You'll have yourself Googling a lot of what is presented here to validate the facts and you will be hard pressed to come up with any dispute.

Book Description

A sweeping, anecdotal account of the great sounds and voices of radio–and how it became a bonding agent for a generation of American youth

When television became the next big thing in broadcast entertainment, everyone figured video would kill the radio star–and radio, period. But radio came roaring back with a whole new concept. The war was over, the baby boom was on, the country was in clover, and a bold new beat was giving the syrupy songs of yesteryear a run for their money. Add transistors, 45 rpm records, and a young man named Elvis to the mix, and the result was the perfect storm that rocked, rolled, and reinvented radio.

Visionary entrepreneurs like Todd Storz pioneered the Top 40 concept, which united a generation. But it took trendsetting “disc jockeys” like Alan Freed, Murray the K, Wolfman Jack, Cousin Brucie, and their fast-talking, too-cool-for-school counterparts across the land to turn time, temperature, and the same irresistible hit tunes played again and again into the ubiquitous sound track of the fifties and sixties. The Top 40 sound broke through racial barriers, galvanized coming-of-age kids (and scandalized their perplexed parents), and provided the insistent, inescapable backbeat for times that were a-changin’.

Along with rock-and-roll music came the attitude that would literally change the “voice” of radio forever, via the likes of raconteur Jean Shepherd, who captivated his loyal following of “Night People”; the inimitable Bob Fass, whose groundbreaking Radio Unnameable inaugurated the anything-goes free-form style that would come to define the alternative frontier of FM; and a small-time Top 40 deejay who would ultimately find national fame as a political talk-show host named Rush Limbaugh.

From Hunter Hancock, who pushed beyond the limits of 1950s racial segregation with rhythm and blues and hepcat patter, to Howard Stern, who blew through all the limits with a blue streak of outrageous on-air antics; from the heyday of summer songs that united carefree listeners to the latter days of political talk that divides contentious callers; from the haze of classic rock to the latest craze in hip-hop, Something in the Air chronicles the extraordinary evolution of the unique and timeless medium that captured our hearts and minds, shook up our souls, tuned in–and turned on–our consciousness, and went from being written off to rewriting the rules of pop culture.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-05-11

As someone in radio, let me tell you this: if you'd like to get into the business, in this day and age no classroom, teacher, textbook or program director can give you as much as this book by Marc Fisher. Those already in radio will be entertained and informed. I was just starting my radio career when the current corporate culture of voice-tracking and conglomerate ownership of cookie-cutter radio overtook the business and took away most of its soul. Fisher makes you really appreciate what radio used to be, the era of personality radio, and makes you long for it to be that way again. When DJs programmed their own music, picked and chose what commercials they would play and when...and were even allowed to discuss relatively controversial opinions and spontaneously throw guests on the air at their whim. I have gained a better appreciation for the pioneers of radio.

5 out of 5 stars Radio was Once an important part of our lives!!.......2007-05-04

I haven't listened to the radio since the Telecommunications Act destroyed radio as we knew it. My favorite stations quickly appealed to the lowest common denominator and I had to search elsewhere to keep up with music. Fisher's book shows the fascinating history of a medium that once was central in our lives (to anyone of a certain age). It's hard to imagine how revolutionary it was to have a station playing the same songs more than ONCE a day!!! Who knew that Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop" was the perfect 70's song, according to focus groups? Now I know why the local oldies stations plays the same Motown songs over and over. I remember as a kid listening to Casey Kasem's Top 40 and writing down the song titles to see how far my favorites would go up the charts. Now, radio is just one choice among many for young people, but for those of us who remember, radio was once the center of our lives. Reading "Something in the Air" is like taking a trip back in time down the radio dial.

5 out of 5 stars Baby boomers in particular will enjoy this remarkable account of the evolution of radio in America........2007-04-10

Oh how I miss the radio I grew up with! Like most people these days I have become extremely disenchanted with most of commercial radio. I lament the fact that the consolidation of broadcast media has left many towns with almost no local radio programming at all. I wonder how this sad state of affairs came to be. "Something In The Air" traces the evolution of this venerable medium from its inception in the early 1920's until today. Marc Fisher does an outstanding job of guiding his readers through all of the twists and turns that radio has taken over the past 75 years. He not only documents what happened but he also does a fine job of explaining the reasons why all of these changes took place.
In the early days of radio, networks dominated the airwaves. In most cities, there were only a few hours each day devoted to local programming. Most of the rest of the broadcast day was filled by an assortment of programming from NBC and CBS. Over the next three decades listeners were treated to a wide variety of network programming including musical shows, variety shows, news and sports broadcasts, soap operas and situation comedies. Particular radio programs became appointment listening. For most folks in this country radio was largely a shared experience.
All of this began to change in he early 1950's when the new medium of television began to gain a mass audience. Most radio performers could see the handwriting on the wall and quickly jumped over to television.
Suddenly there was a huge void of programming on the radio dial. Enter one Todd Stortz of Omaha, NE who had a new vision for radio. Indeed it was Todd Stortz who came up with the concept of Top 40 radio. I was fascinated by Marc Fisher's account of how this format was conceived and promoted by Stortz. Although I have been a radio buff all of my life this is a story I had really never heard. It is fascinating reading! For the next three decades it would be the Top 40 sound that would dominate the airwaves. This is the radio most baby boomers like myself grew up with. Radio had become much more of a local proposition. It seems that we all had our favorite disc jockeys and most of the kids I knew relished the wide variety of music on the radio in those days. It was an exciting time to be a teen! But the reality was that the radio audience had begun to fragment. Even before Top 40 began to fade in the mid to late 1970's listeners were casting about for new and different programming on the radio. Marc Fisher goes on to document the evolution of talk radio, public radio, album-oriented rock, the emergence of "shock" jocks and a whole host of other formats that have been attempted over the years. Towards the end of the book, Fisher also discusses innovative new offerings such as satellite and HD radio. Unfortunately, it seems like the radio audience is more fragmented than ever and Fisher points his finger directly at consultants and the aforementioned media consolidation as the main culprits.
Today radio is dominated by the likes of media giants Clear Channel, Cumulus, Infinity and Citadel who combined own more than half of the radio stations in this country. A large portion of local programming has been replaced by dreary syndicated offerings. Many of us wonder what will become of it all. Is radio even worth listening to anymore? Yet for all of its flaws and all of our complaining we still do listen. The average adult in this country tunes in for about three hours each day. Marc Fisher speculates what the future might be for radio. With so many alternatives now available to each of us it is hard to imagine that radio will ever again be the shared experience that so many people long for. I found "Something In The Air" to be one of the more entertaining books I have read in recent months. It is a book that should appeal to people of all ages. This one is extremely well written and very informative to boot. Highly recommended!

A concservative's Bible if you will. A common sense look at life.

1 out of 5 stars Definite Scent of Chickenhawk .......2007-05-29

Limbaugh's demagoguery in print. His reputation as a hypocrite and liar has been well established, yet his followers continue to give him credence. This book is packed full of mischaracterizations, lies, and half-truths.

An example; From chapter 5: "I have about had it being told that the plight of the homeless is my fault. I'm sick and tired of turning on my TV and being told that the AIDS crisis is my fault too, because I don't care enough." Clearly, he's trying to make an emotional appeal to the reader, based on the false premise that "someone" is characterizing Rush (and the reader) as uncaring louts. In reality, these are just issues that come up in the news from time to time. Guilt feelings are optional and personal - not stated and explicit.

Here is another quote from chapter 15. Rush has this to say about environmentalists: "Rather than elevate the third world, they want to move us closer to Third World conditions. That's somehow cleaner and purer. They want to roll us back, maybe not to the Stone Age, but at least to the horse and buggy era." Naturally, Rush never explains what it is that environmentalists are doing that is going to send us back to the horse and buggy era. I can't see how requiring stricter auto-emissions standards moves us back to the horse and buggy era. Environmentalists want to maintain strict pollution control standards, and health and safety requirements, as well as higher automobile fuel efficiency standards. These things improve the quality of everyone's lives without any great sacrifices. Why the hatred of environmentalists? What agenda do they have other than trying to make our world better? Perhaps they stand in the way of Limbaugh's corporate bosses?

In short, Limbaugh's "logic" will only pass muster with those who are in lockstep agreement with his narrow viewpoint. No thinking individual will find anything but disgust with this slanted screed.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Marvelous.......2007-04-28

These extremist hate-filled liberal "reviewers" here give me a laugh, ha ha, that's me guffawing. These liberal "reviewers" can't help lying, they start out with an immediate lie, "I'm a conservative, but blah blah hate hate hate." Do you simpletons really think you're fooling anyone? I can smell a liberal 10 miles off. The only one's dumb enough to believe your immediate lies are other liberals. But you wouldn't know that because the liberal ilk you hang with all have IQs of 2, so you think everyone's as stupid as you and the rabble you surround yourself with. OK, now that I've put the lying liberal "reviewers" in their place, I proceed with my pearls of wisdom on Rush's wonderful and enlightening book.
It's another Masterpiece friends from the Mastermind and the reflector of all right thinking truly decent Americans. Rush speaks for all good and right thinking people, he reflects our thoughts and what we already know is right and wrong, but Rush goes one better, he is great for rubbing the liberal liars noses in their own excrement. Liberal liars don't stand a chance with their scheming lies and communist attempts to take over the courts because they can't win an election. Liberal liars, bow your head to greatness that is me and all others just like Rush, Rush will be every liberal's new hero, because in your heart, you know he's right. Now, liberals, read Rush's book over and over and admit your real goal, to destroy America and freedom. We won't let it happen. Liberals and elkayda, oh, that's not how you spell it? I DON'T CARE! Liberals and ekayda are one, and they will be defeated. And a good start to their destruction is all people worldwide reading the wonderful wise words of that lovable little fuzzball, Rush. And that's the final word. Thank you and good riddance to liberals.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Books From Crooks.......2006-07-21

The book is nothing more than a large ego trip from one of the most vile man in politics. Limbaugh has recycled his on air rant and raves into text. There is nothing new here. How a failed top forty DJ becomes the mouth piece for the republican party speaks a lot about conservatives. Treat yourself to Viagra instead.

2 out of 5 stars Long-time listener - first (and last) time reader.......2006-07-09

I'll admit -- I don't like Rush one bit. I listen to his show to find out what the creepy side of America is being told to think. But I did check out this book, and it's slightly better than I expected. That is to say, it's considerably better than Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly or Ann Coulter's stuff. He doesn't rant or rave.

But still, I found very little in this book that is true or accurate or even honest. IMO, if you don't buy into his prejudices already, you won't find much to agree with.

Rush Limbaugh claims his talent is on loan. With this book, Franken demonstrates that he owns. The frankly Democratic author's shtick reminds us how much of a free ride conservatives have gotten in the mainstream media. For instance, he really drives home the weirdness of the conservatives' preachiness about "family values" in light of Newt Gingrich's and Bob Dole's first marriages, and Rush Limbaugh's first, second and third marriages. And he has great fun with Rush's and Newt's miraculous draft deferments in a chapter where he imagines all of the great conservative "chicken-hawks" out on a Vietnam war patrol under the leadership of Ollie North.

Book Description

In the grand satirical tradition of Swift, Rabelais, and Twain comes...

Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations ...

a scathing--but uncompromisingly fair--look at America's largest talk show host and the rest of the Republican right.

Penned by the Emmy award-winning Saturday Night Live writer whom John Podhoretz of the New York Post has called "the man responsible for some of the most brilliant political satire of our time," Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot tackles the issues--and the politicians--in ways few have dared...

Exploding Medicare Costs: "Why not shoot the elderly into space?  Stay with me.  Because I'm not just thinking about the budget here.  I'm talking about science.  Just think how many more manned space operations NASA could undertake if they didn't have to worry about getting the astronauts back."

Crime: "I have a radical gun-buyback idea that I guarantee would be a huge success.  Here's how it works: hand in a gun, get a free vial of crack."

Newt Gingrich: "Many of us, like Newt, have acknowledged smoking dope and reading Toffler in the early 70s.  But after reading his book, I think Newt's dirty little secret is that he smoked dope and watched The Jetsons."

Phil Gramm: "If you get beyond the fact the Gramm is ugly, mean, hypocritical, has a boob fetish, and drives his wife like a mule, he does have a certain folksy charm."

On the subject of Rush Limbaugh, Franken lets the facts speak for themselves. Listen to Rush, the "rugged individualist" and enemy of government handouts, explain how his second wife made him stop sitting around the house eating just food and go file for unemployment insurance.  And learn all of Rush's several explanations for how he avoided the draft.

Of course, when it comes to draft-dodging Republicans, Rush isn't alone. Reading Al's Vietnam short story, "Operation Chickenhawk," you'll savor the exploits of Privates Limbaugh, Gramm, Quayle, Buchanan, Gingrich, and George Will as Lieutenant Oliver North leads them kicking and screaming into combat.

And don't miss Al's informative discussion with the man who has "the easiest job in America": Rush Limbaugh's fact-checker.  And much, much more.

1 out of 5 stars Makes Great Toilet Paper!.......2007-05-30

I got this book on clearance for $2.15 and what an investment it was! Just set this thing right next to the toilet and you'll have toilet paper for at least 2-3 weeks!

As if Stuart Smalley wasn't enough we get more brainless garbage from Al Franken... Air America is and always will be an embarrassing failure and so will Al Franken. But thanks anyway Al, I'm sure Rush appreciates all the publicity. He'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Stick to SNL and leave the childish insults to the 5th graders at recess.

2 out of 5 stars Now That I've Thought Better of It.......2007-03-08

Al Franken is intelligent, witty and informed and for those of us who were already sick to death of Rush Limbaugh's dreck when this book was released, it was a guilty pleasure. Yes, we knew the taunting was childish but on the other hand, we also knew Rush needed to be taken down a peg or two. Reason and facts weren't having the least effect, so why not hit him where it hurt?

However, with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it's not so funny to publicly humiliate people for their physical appearence. Especially when it results in the target trying so desperately to drop pounds, he becomes addicted to drugs (hey, fellow liberals, if we have enough compassion to support needle-exchange programs for street junkies, why do some of us have bumper stickers mocking R. L. for HIS drug problems?)

Neither is it very funny to contemplate the further degeneration of public discourse in this country. How can we complain about Ann Coulter and insist the Right renounce her unless we renouce the childish name-callers in our own ranks?

And so, although I agree with Franken's other, truly serious political critiques of the pundits, on my bookshelf, this particular title has worn out its welcome.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2006-07-14

First of all, I must admit that I am a little biased in my rating. I have read most of Al Franken's books and listen to him on Air America (and am always informed and entertained). But with that said, I still believe it's a fair review.

While I understand some are offended by the rather blunt nature of the writing, please remember that this book is written by a comedian who often uses satire and irony to make a (not so subtle) point.

Rush Limbaugh, along with many other conservatives and liberals , use personal attacks in place of well-reasoned arguments. It is so much easier to go after people than it is to go after ideas, especially when you happen to hold the less thoughtful idea. Franken's book is well-researched and the points he makes are thoroughly explained. The ironic use of name-calling and such is what keeps this book entertaining. Otherwise it would leave many readers depressed/ashamed/alarmed by the direction in which such unscrupulous figures as Limbaugh are trying to drag unsuspecting Americans.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book I've ever read - and useful too!.......2006-06-05

This is Franken's masterpiece. Every single sentence is funny. Of all his books, this is the best!

5 out of 5 stars Expectations met!.......2006-05-31

This book is to books, what Jackee is to TV comedy. And what's that, Navy Bean? It's unadulterated, take-no-prisoners humor! I love Al Franken and I love Jackee. I hope they'll someday find each other and produce offspring that I'll call, Al Jaqen. Which sounds sort of weird, but for all of us Franken/Jackee fans will have a special resonance as we go forward with our lives. Maybe we'll have a signal that will tacitly tell other members who we are. Like we'd always wear orange ascots or maybe a certain style of beret ... heavy on sequins ... light on attitude.

Al Franken's whimsical and trite prose will have you on the verge of enjoying this book. You'll enthusiastically tell all your friends, "Given a choice, I'd rather have read Star Jones new book."

The Democrats may be in the White House---but even President Clinton can't ruin this country in only four years, proclaims Rush. A must for the politically incorrect, and sure to be anther blockbuster audio bestseller, See, I Told You So is Rush at his best---revealing once again why his syndicated radio show reaches over 20 million listeners each week.

5 out of 5 stars Liberals they live to lie.......2007-04-28

These liberal hate filled "reviewers" give me a laugh, har har, that's me guffawing. They just can't help lying, they even have to start their diatribes of hate with an immediate lie, they say, "I'm a conservative but I think blah blah hate hate about Rush" I can smell a liberal 10 miles off. Do they really think everyone's as stupid as they are? Got news for ya, you ain't foolin' no one. Your typical hate filled messages are recognizable immediately as only coming from the loony left. Now that I've put you liberal reviewers here in your place, I shall now proceed to my pearls of wisdom on this wonderful and enlightening book that every man woman and child should cherish.
Yes, it's another Masterpiece from the Mastermind and the reflector of all right thinking truly decent Americans, Rush.

1 out of 5 stars He Told Me Nothing I Already Knew.......2006-09-30

As with all my reviews, I just want to focus on the veterans issue. Like many right-wing war lovers, Rush never served. This shows.

Rush gives a totally ridiculous analogy about why men fight on page 15. After stating this idiocy, he concludes, "[e]verybody does what he is ordered to do because that is the nature of the military." And where did you get that idea, pray tell? I and others did what we had to do because we WANTED to do it. We had pride in service and pride in being elite. I wasn't a paratrooper and jumped out of planes because somebody told me to.

It is odd that Rush would refer to Representative Ron Dellums as "a former draft dodger." You have to turn to page 253 to see where I get mad about this guy. Regarding WWII, Rush states, "[y]oung men lied about their age, ignored medical and physical disqualifications, and abandoned their livelihoods in order to join the services." It is well known how Rush parlayed a correctable anal cyst into 4-F status to stay out of the military and Vietnam. I myself was also deemed 4-F, but obtained a waiver regarding my own physical disability, which was not correctable through simple surgery. Rush speaks of ironies on this about supposed Democrats, saying they would turn into "chicken hawks" (page 258) at the "first sign of trouble." Well, buddy, that was you on Vietnam. On that same page, he talks about Vietnam--the war I was in as a volunteer and he "volunteered" to stay out of.

Rush again forgets to look in the mirror after stating, on page 259, that the military has "unique requirements...no matter whose feelings get hurt, including heterosexual men who can't meet the physical or ment requirements." Since you did not meet the physical requirements (but could have with one short doctor visit), do you feel hurt, Mr. Limbaugh?

It also makes no sense, except in the context of people too cowardly or self-absorbed, his statement, "[r]ecruitment is down...and the intelligence level of those enlisting is lower." The easiest way to correct that problem is for all these right-wingers to go down and sign up. I really start to burn at the end of page 261. Check this out. "Most of us are so detached, so smug, and so far removed from the battlefields where our fathers fought...we cannot beging to empathize with them." Hey, my dad, granddad and me all got our OWN battlefields. He wags a finger at the reader with, "[d]on't ever forget the WWII generation, nor abandon the cause for which it sacrificed." Oh, puleeze, Rush, what about Korea and Vietnam? Got a problem with those of us who sacrificed fighting communism?

Rush reminds me of another fat windbag and draft dodger strutting around, making other men go out to do what he didn't have the guts to do himself: Benito Mussolini.

4 out of 5 stars Ex-Lax In Broadcasting. Beat The Rush.......2006-04-26

This is Judith Regan's good sequel to Judith Regan's bad blockbuster, aka "Rush Limbaugh's First Book." Both books, paste-ups of Rush monologues, have the same problem as Rush monologues, pointless prolixity. Judith should have cut things down to a solid fifteen or twenty pages in the manner of Rush cutting down hours of prattle into broadcast brilliance, his morning updates, radio's best 1.5 minutes.

I've been with the Majority Maker off and on since cowgirl Hillary Clinton's cattle futures. It's been a long strange trip: This (Socks) is the Clinton cat, this (Chelsea) is the Clinton dog. No Boundaries Ties. The Lovely & Gracious Marta's psychopathological bump tunes, coincident with the Majority Maker's bad mood after he made the Republican majority in 1994. The rush to impeachment. The rush to war. The assurance that Hillary wouldn't lower herself to run for the Senate. The assurance that Hillary, running for the Senate, wouldn't win. The c. 45 monologue minutes during which Rush conflated John Kerry with Bob Kerrey. The Eagles & McNab. The dope fiend. The schlub.

But things are now getting so wierd that it's time for Hunter Thompson to come back & take over. Last week Rush boosted Bush by saying that Congress is even more despised than Bush. That would be the, uh, Republican Congress whose majority, spending like drunken Democrats, was made by Rush in 1994. Or so they say.

Then he gave Bush's failed presidency the ultimate attaboy: This administration, said Rush, is even more diverse than Clinton's. Quincy Bush is totally in the tank, but Congress is even worse, and none of it matters because we Republicans are multiculturalists.

My party 'tis of thee, a rainbow of diversity. And multiculturalism. Ponder the irony, my friends, while reading See I Told You So, a quaint artifact from the dead-as-Ronbo Republican Revolution.

1 out of 5 stars Repugnant Ranting From a Humongous Hypocrite.......2006-02-26

I read about one-half of this book and that was more than enough for me. This is a man who should be convicted and jailed for HIS drug usage, just as he has said of users and dealers numerous times in the past. This is also a man with neither an education nor a grasp of history. On his show, he brazenly justifies the Patriot Act and illegal government wiretappings while history shows us that these actions are indeed the first typical steps taken by a leader toward eventual tyranny. This is also a man who refuses to even talk to someone who is against the current U.S. military invasion of Iraq while dismissing such dissenters as being "anti-American." This is also a man who is completely ignorant when it comes to the First Amendment and why the Founding Fathers made damn certain that the people's right to openly disagree with ANY government policy or action, whether it is high taxation or a military invasion, was protected under the Constitution. This is also a man who, when it was time for him to fight for his country, chickened out, just as Cheney and Bush did. Gore Vidal, who served in the Navy for three years said it best when he once wrote that it is always the sissies who wouldn't themselves for anything fight for their country who are the biggest and loudest cheerleaders of all when it comes to combat. This is also a man who rationalizes that the likes of Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon are insidiously evil icons who pose the worse threat to America's well being. Meanwhile, neither of these people are responsible for the nearly 2500 senseless deaths of military servicemen and women in Iraq who are fighting the undefinable "enemy." This is also an ill-informed propagandist who refuses to criticize ANY republican while justifying his habitually heinous rants with "...because III say so." And yet, this is also a man who is incredibly popular in talk radio, which signifies that there are multitudes of listeners with serious critical thinking disorders who fawningly worship this blathering bozo.I ask you then: who do you think the true American enemy is here?

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Rush tells it like it is!.......2006-02-21

I just loved this book. Right on the money. Just give Rush a chance and listen to him. It took years but he broke me of my liberal mindset once I REALLY started to think about things.

So many here simply HATE Rush and call him the hater but I know, I listen everyday, I don't hear any hate, just reality.

The left thrusts all these thoughts upon him claiming he says certain things when he doesn't.

The guy LOVES to P off Dems especially when they don't get the humor.

I think it's pretty low and sick when they mention his drug situation.

AS someone in severe pain from arthritic pain I always have to balance pain with how many pills I have to take with it just to function. Without them I would just lay in bed all day and moan. I don't like to take them at all, they have terrible side effects such as constant itching, but as I said the pain is sometimes simply unbearable for my incurable condition.

So the left shoots low and calls Rush a drug addict because he has severe pain and did his best to deal with it.

The problem with the left is that they LOVE to exaggerate. Some claim he was taking 100 pills a day! Please, lets get real. I have as bad pain as anyone but I can't tolerate more than 2, 3 pills a day and sometimes I don't take anything for days.

I grew up in the city and knew a lot of pill junkies. Even the worst ones could not take 100 pills a day, that would kill anyone especially with the strong medicine Rush was taking.

Look, none of us know his pain level, so we shouldn't judge him.
Also some here have got the facts wrong about his case but I'm not going to get deep into that. What is known is that the liberal Florida prosecutor who went after him FAR exceeded his legal authority to do so.

What really should piss liberals off is that if they say he was the lowest junkie in the world but if you listen to him you know that Rush has NEVER faltered in the quality of his radio show. If anything in the last 2-3 years he's sharper than he's ever been and he truly is the main voice of truth in this great land.

Even liberal Bill Maher said if Rush was that good and sharp when he was stoned we all should watch out because straight he'll be even more on point.

Liberals simply have a mindless hatred of the right.
Their ideas are silly and the best tool Rush has to display that, which he does every single day, is to simply play their own words and show them to be the gutless fools they are.

Rush is right, liberalism doesn't work, it never has and it makes problems worse.

It's the Democrats who claim that Republicans are mean and hate the poor and are racist.
But Rush points out the FACTS that Bush outspends Clinton on federal spending for the poor by more than two to one.
It's the Democrats who have a former head Klansman in the Senate. Bush has more black people in his administration than any other. Black home ownership is at it's highest rate ever.
Ted Kennedy left a woman to die in the water. How can this man still be reelected every time?
Could you imagine if a Republican Senator drove a car in the water today, and didn't report it until the next day because he was drunk, and the dead body of a young girl, not his wife was found?

He show how the Democrats blocked the rebuilding of the New Orleans to preserve the wetlands which turned ALL of New Orleans in the wetlands.

He shows how the Food Stamp program has millions of unused dollars even with a multi million dollar plan to advertise it. The same thing with federal college scholarships and loans. Millions of dollar go unused because many students just don't apply for it, NOT because, as they lie, that Republicans cut the programs.

Rush gives intelligent discourse and dissects liberals words better than anyone. And that's what makes them so mad, because he is right almost all the time. Then he uses humor and makes them even madder.

He also backs up his arguments with proof.

So when the liberals are shown to be who they are and their arguments fall flat they get angry, and then they lie.

They try to make EVERYTHING into the next Watergate and fail everytime.
Week after week they try this strategy.
They cry wolf so often no one listens anymore.

Dick Cheney has a hunting accident and they try to associate it with the "failures" in Iraq.

Meanwhile when asked about what the Dems would do in Iraq Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean says "We don't have to have a plan, they are the ones in power now, we simply need to remove this administration"

THATS IT! They don't have to have a plan?!!!!
The truth is they DON'T have a plan other than hating Bush.

They think they are actually going to win elections with this mantra even though Bush will not be running again!!

Dean also made other choice comments like "I hate Republicans . . they never did an honest days work in thier lives".

This is the leader of the party!!!

THEY are the ones filled with hate, they say it outright, NOT Rush.

Liberalism is a gutless disease of holding your hand out wanting the government to do everything for you. In fact it helps keep people poor.

Republicans are NOT just for the rich. That's the lie and Rush shows it to be true.
Keep lying you Dems, you only look more and more foolish everyday.

This is a great book, Rush told you about liberalism years ago and it's failure is even more truer now than it was then.
The man's a master, and he is RIGHT!

Book Description

Our smartest and funniest progressive writers, cartoonists and satirists have increasingly turned their attention to the right-wing zealots who clutter up our media—television, radio, books, magazines—with hysterical, bullying, personal attacks on liberals, democrats, minorities, workers, women, gays, anti-war activists and ordinary citizens who dare to object to the right's radical agenda for our country. This reader exposes the lies and distortions of these morons and bullies—who routinely rely on made-up statistics and scare tactics to push their policies and so-called values, revealing these liars for what they are—intellectually shallow and emotionally crippled demagogues who are more interested in their personal power than in America's future. Featuring a wonderful compilation of attacks by Michael Moore, Molly Ivins and Jim Hightower; profiles of Ann Coulter and Peggy Noonan; transcripts from debates and interviews that humiliate Savage and O'Reilly; quizzes by Paul Slansky; commentary by stand-up comedians; satire from The Onion and other websites; works by Greg Palast and Chris Floyd; and much, much more. The I Hate Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity Reader is a piece of sweet revenge for the harm these mean-spirited demagogues are doing to our country and our world.

Coulter, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and the rest of the right-wing whackos. . .they spew HATE and Bigotry and Racism.

If they (or their ditto-heads) can't stand the fire, they can get out of the kitchen.

Here's another one for you to chew on: right wing lunitics hate American Freedoms. They hate progression. They hate critical thinking. They should be exposed for the liars they really are: books like this simply highlight a need for counter-balance.

Let the guard go down: this is war.

Time to shut up these morons for good.

5 out of 5 stars We Have to Protect the Country From the Right Wing.......2007-04-19

If it against the right wing nuts who brainwash American fools to act against their own best interests, it must be good.

5 out of 5 stars About the book's title . . . The 'I Hate' Reader.......2007-01-02

IF FOX ZOMBIES can leave one-star reviews, having never read the book, then I can counter them while making an honest observation. I, too, grimace at the way hate is thrown around casually. But looking at the cover of this book, the way the graphics emphasize certain words, it would appear the title of the book might rightly read, "The 'I Hate' Reader," with a list of those hatemongers critiqued in the volume. Thus the word hate in the title rightly reflects on the mean-spirited, rightwing pundits critiqued within, and not on their sincere critics. Or is that obvious?

1 out of 5 stars not surprised...........2006-11-14

Not suprising liberals come up with this in order to try and silence some of the rare good Americans we have to speak out in true support of our great country. The author even uses "HATE" blatently, which only shows how blind the twisted perspective is. I know the conservatives like Savage and Coulter are definitely not liars and actually have the right plan America needs for adequate terrorist protection. Its also funny, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh etc do not actually hate mentally ill liberals like author Clint Willis hates what he doesnt agree with, but they are actually trying to help and change why exactly these people(extreme left) act in this suicidal, destructive and absolutly antiAmerican way of thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Hmm...I wonder.......2006-09-06

Looking at the right wing one star reviewers, I have to wonder if they read any part of the book besides the title. All I hear is them whining about liberal hypocrisy and hate speech. This book is a passionate yet valid expose of right wing idols. It's certainly far above Michael Savage and his schoolyard bully-style name-calling. (I mean, San Franfreako? Come on!)

The spine says Four Star Press, it should say One Star. This is a so called Hollywood Publicist that can't even spell Peter Bogdanovich's name right. His biggest claim to fame is that Rush Limbaugh was in his wedding party. If you're interested in legends such as Peggy Rea and Julie Warner, which stars come from the Kansas City area or publicity events like the Kansas City Tap Challenge, this book comes highly recommended. Otherwise, it's dull and awkwardly written, revealing less than the average issue of Entertainment Weekly. Not worth your time.

He's America's mouth that roars: Rush Limbaugh. . . outrageous, outspoken, and some say out-to-lunch. When Limbaugh claims "I'm not making this stuff up, folks," plug in the lie detector. He is making it up, and FAIR can prove it. In The Way Things Aren't, the media watch group FAIR catches more than one hundred of Rush's wildest whoppers. From ozone to abortion, Rodney King to Reaganomics, Limbaugh has a finely honed ability to distort reality, yet his facts often go unchallenged. Some of these "truths" would be laughable if not for the millions of people who believe them.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars From the Mouth of a Souce.......2007-05-22

The book tells us what many of its readers already know. Rush Limbaugh appeals to our lower instincts where impulses run rampant, and the emotion of anger is the easiest to trigger and feed.

In what is almost a comic book format and coloring, the content is surprisingly serious about Mr. Limbaugh's deceit, racism, disingenuousness, fabrications and lies. Here's an example from the radio airing on March 10, 1994:

Limbaugh: "I am not calling the president names."

Caller: "You do it every day."

Limbaugh: "Give me one example of calling him a name..."

Caller: "You've called him a liar, a fool, and idiot."

Limbaugh: "Those are not names. Those are assessments of his character. They are not names."

(?)

I was most interested in Rush's background, which revealed his hypocrisy. Limbaugh the ueberpatriot claimed that Reagan was the best president this country ever had, but he never voted for him. In fact, he didn't vote until he was thirty-five.

The second was his lack of military service. Rush claimed to have failed a draft physical and thus was never called because he had a high draft number. Actually, he had a low one, was called, and then "failed" the physical. At different times claiming a knee injury from high school football, and then a pilonidal cyst, which caused him to fail. His father had the same cyst when he was a World War II fighter pilot.

The man who rails against divorce is now working on his third marriage, and the printing of this book was before Limbaugh's drug addiction.

This book also includes Limbaugh's pronouncements and then the reality check. An example of this is Limbaugh's claim that melting glacial ice is the same as ice melting in a glass. The level doesn't change. And here is where RL is flat out wrong. Most of our glacial ice is over land. Water level would rise 200 feet worldwide if it melted.

This means Limbaugh needs to be taken with a large dose of salt, but this is where the book unwittingly falters. Those who see Limbaugh as a charlatan, don't require further convincing. Those who worship at the altar of his Cuban cigars and grotesque line of ties, will discount the contents of this book without reading it.

At least now, I have identified the source for a number of neocon arguments.

This is the kind of book you read during the commute.

5 out of 5 stars Laying the framework.......2005-09-12

Let me preface this by saying that I was inspired to buy this book because my father is one of the biggest "dittoheads" ever.
Anyway, for a mere $7.00, I could explain to my dad just how wrong this loud, sweaty homo-phobe really is.
More than the lies themselves, I was glad there were citations. I found in Limbaugh's book where he said there are more acres of forestland today than there were back in 1492 when Columbus discovered the continent. WAAAAYYY Off! If there's more forest today, what were all of our cities, parks, stadiums, etc. built on? Barren Desert? I think not, Rush.
The quotes from his radio show are shocking. I just wish I could access an archive of this guy, just so I could really hear them.

*See how easy it is to throw bombs at people? I'm glad people express their opinions and have differnet views, even though it pisses me of a lot.

*But, one reviewer used the analogy of Rush listeners to Hitler Youth members. That is such a cop-out, easy, thoughtless, and inflammatory statement. I should know. I used that analogy countless times in school, because it is easy and powerful. The problem is that it is almost always untrue.

This book is an excellent read. It exposes Libaugh for what he is: A lying, racist, sexist hate-monger. I would suggest this book to anybody who has a dittohead as friend and pass it on to them and just see the looks on their faces when they realized they've been had all this time by this big, fat hypocrite.

3 out of 5 stars An Actual Balanced Account.......2000-04-01

This is neither an expose nor a ballyhoo (despite the subtitle, "Talent On Loan From God", which is a phrase Limbaugh often applies to himself) but is straightforward account of an intelligent but aimless man who eventually wanders into the role of the biggest thing in talk radio.

If it has a fault it's that it's too dry, but you'll find a lot of interesting events that foreshadow his future career as the right's spokesman. For instance, how he was fired from his DJ job for contantly playing the Rolling Stones'"Under My Thumb", probably the most misogynistic rock song of all time.

2 out of 5 stars An Assault On The Reader .......2005-06-11

I am not a big fan of Rush Limbaugh, I would even admit to somewhat disliking the man. I also tend to fall to more of the moderate side of the political isle. So you would think that I would have really liked this book, unfortunately for me I did not. I am all for going after the many misstatements that Rush makes and his very far right wing view of the world. I would have even enjoyed a bit of grief given to the conservative section of the Republican party, but this book went way beyond what I wanted to read. The author started out taking on the items are mentioned above, it was just that the author used this as a starting point. He went after everything to the right of full blown socialism.

As I read I kept thinking what in the world is this guy thinking. He has an issue with about everything that is remotely associated with the Republican party. He was mad at business owners having the ability to move their businesses around the U.S., he does not like any kind of anti union activity and he is aghast that anyone might be opposed to government control of all aspects of the community. Overall the author takes the opportunity of this book to beat up on everything slightly red. The venom kept increasing through the book to the point that you feel like the author is standing up in front of you yelling.

Overall the book was far too negative for me. The author has a huge chip on his shoulder and he is going to let the world know about it. I was looking for a funny and campy book that took as many shots at Rush about his politics as it did about his waistline. If you are a hard core hater of all things Republican then you will probably enjoy the book. If you are looking for anything a bit less over the top then keep looking.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2003-11-23

I'm not surprised that many of the reviewers here gave the books such high marks. Their reviews, much like the book, are littered with misspellings and other inaccuracies. Perhaps we can blame this on the evil Conservative Right-Wing establishment known as our education system....oh, wait....it's largely Liberal? Holy cow. Oh, sorry, a religious reference. Shame on me!

5 out of 5 stars The Great Con...period!.......2003-11-09

I thought this was a pure expose book on the great limbaugh but after reading it, it was more like finishing a course on Socialism, Political History and Economics.
This book does a great job in explaining in a non-condecending, patient manner on how this whole country will eventually turn into Spartanburg... anti-worker, anti-community, anti-union and seeping with greed. And we have rush and the right to thank for.
I do listen to rush, just to see if he is intelligent and credible. I didn't see any believable credibility there, but there's a lot of hate and disdain. Hate for anyone who's isn't as sophisticated, who didn't have a formal education, who don't belong to the right, social, ethnic and economical strata and mostly disdain for humans who labor with their hands and backs. That's why it is so important for working people to read this book, because it reiterates something that is so true "Labor creates all wealth for all people to share." Workers are the essential equation in a Democratically successful society. Workers are not to be hated and disdained, after all, Mr. Patrick J. Hurley, isn't that what God and religion is suppose to be about, love, sharing and brotherhood?

Ofcourse this book has much, much details and really delves into a lot of statistics but it doesn't make you feel bogged down. Kelly's writing style is easy to comprehend, even when he gets technical. He can also be sarcastic and funny at times. I really appreciate this book as a working, tax paying person.

5 out of 5 stars They Can Dish it Out; But They Can't Take It.......2003-08-25

Like all bullies...and fan(atics) of bullies the few here who reacted badly to this nifty little book reveal themselves to be highly prejudiced.

Suffice it to say that in all his years of "success" Limbaugh has never subjected himself to having a real fair series of in depth debates with equal time for both sides in an arena in which he is not in total control. Imagine Rush going head to head for, say 20 hours, of truly fair debates with Bill Clinton, or Gary Hart, or Mario Cuomo, or Hillary Clinton etc etc.

Limbaughism only "works" in the hothouse of the studio of right wing hate radio in which he holds all the cards...no wonder his "fans" think he is some kind of god.

All Limbaugh ever does is bloviate in a bubble; the calls that disagree with him are carefully screened for (in)competence and anyone who ever actually seriously challenges the bloviator is potted down as "El Rushbo" pontificates as if the disappeared "opponent" was somehow struck dumb.

Limbaugh and ALL right wing media (FOX et al) is to "Fair and Balanced" as WWF wrestling is to Greco Roman Olympic wrestling.

Unfortunately, it's easier to roll a ball downhill by appealing to the basest elements of human nature.....so the appeal to selfish materialism and bigotry and jingoism that underlies Rush et al will always be a cheap shot that is easy to take and easy to make.

The irony is that Rush and his ilk cloak their venom in terms of religiosity and patriotism and high sounding values.....but at the core; all they do is allow people to actually feel perversely proud of being materialistic, selfish, jingoistic, and bigoted. No wonder he is popular with a large number of people; demagoguery works...for a while.

Eventually, the reality of reality catches up with all of us. The effects of climate change will eventually be what they will be...the effects of non renewable rescource depletion will be what they will be....the effects of Bush II Enronian trickle down "voodoo economics" will be what they will be.....eventually the global and national effects of massive bifurcation between the super rich and the dirt poor will be what they will be etc etc etc.

Time will eventually tell whether Limbaugh is some kind of glorious prophet as his fans believe; or if he is a pathetic and dangerous demogogue.

We should all live so long, eh? :-)

5 out of 5 stars Rush is very, very Right(Wing).......2003-03-19

I just read Alterman's book "What Liberal Media", and it reminded me of this book. Right wing fanatics like Limbaugh and Coulter are rarely correct, and often have to make up "facts" to back up their faulty logic. Keep away from these conservatives, who only have the corporations and rich in mind when they speak.
