A must have reference guide for windows 98 users........1999-02-10
I sell computers as a profession for a prominent retail store. As such, I am expected and asked to give out helpful information to customers and colleagues alike. WIN 98 Optimizing & Troubleshooting provides valuable information for everyone and has helped me do my job to a fuller extent of my capabilites. I recommend this book for beginners and professionals alike. I also recommended it to my associates with whom I work. It is quick, clear, concise, and easily referenced. Two thumbs up!
"Another" book? The ONLY book you'll ever need!.......1998-10-13
Being a book lover and a computer buff, it's not always easy to distinguish which grabs me most. But here is a book accomodation that leads by the hand into what otherwise can be a morass of intrigue into a hefty complex world of developing technology. This is a friendly work, it presumes nothing except that the reader wants to learn about what the subject is: Windows 98. For that reason there is a 1-2-3 attitude: do this, then do that, for an expected result. Simple, direct, and with a purpose. Even a dumb-dumb can understand, if you fall down, you pick yourself up. It is called "learning to walk" and the author and editors, the publisher, have made it all possible not only to enjoy reading how-to-do-it, but also by imparting a refreshingly natural style in describing "it's really not that difficult to learn", and proving it. Not only that, the reader will experience instantaneous results, not an experiment into a dark tomb filled with speculation. This book is a must-read for anyone desiring to exploit the hidden benefits of Windows 98, enabling anyone who reads it to smugly acquire an edge on better performance and outstanding accomplishment that makes a difference.
Excellent Format.......1998-10-09
This book has the best format for finding answers quickly. You don't have to read an entire chapter to find the answer. It is easy to understand and covers most of the problems a Win98 user may encounter.
A Keeper.......1998-10-08
This book is organized and written to "get you where you want to go today." (Thank you, Microsoft.)
Chambers, in as few words as possible, tells you not only how to do something but why you should or shouldn't do it. He has a knack for covering in a few pages what other books take a chapter to cover. And, surprisingly, he makes it all--for the most part--understandable.
The Black Book approach gives you the information you need and JUST the information you need. With the million-plus words out there on Win 98, this is an approach we all can use.
I highly recommend this book for intermediate to advanced users. It's a keeper.
Best damn windows 98 book I ever read.......1998-10-02
Very good book for a beginner. Very easy to understand It has everything in it.

The great thing about the Windows 98 Registry is that it's a central location for settings and preferences information about the operating system and the programs that exist within it. The problem with the Registry is that the keys you need to locate and the values you need to edit often rank near the bottom of the intelligibility scale. This slender book explains many of the mysteries of the Windows 98 Registry, that repository of settings, preferences, relationships, and other key system data. Win 98 Registry Little Black Book tells what you can accomplish by altering Registry values and walks you through the relevant processes.
For example, this book can assist you in changing the registered user information if your company's name has changed. It can also help if you think the Documents entries in the Start menu constitute a security risk, or if you're unhappy with your modem's throughput and you suspect there's something you can do outside the standard dialog boxes.
It would be nice if this book included information on the Registry entries made by popular application software, such as the programs in Microsoft Office. But as it stands, Win 98 Registry Little Black Book is a fine resource for those who find themselves annoyed by some of Windows 98's default characteristics. --David Wall
Book Description
Describes and demonstrates Windows 98 Registry functions and tools for customizing and optimizing personal computer systems through system properties, Device Manager, and various profiles. Translates the specialized language of the Windows 98 Registry with terms such as dynamic keys, CLSIDs, DWORD values, ProgIDs, and verbs (they're not what your English teacher told you!). Offers quick tips and solutions to speed up performance and improve a PC's error checking.

Problem Solver.......2003-06-20
These "Little Black Books" are published by the same people as the Exam Cram books and they are very useful. I've got this one along with the Reducing TCO book. Both have come in handy for me. I recently got this Registry book out to figure out an authentication problem we are having on our network. I didn't find anything to fix our problem, but I ended up reading the Sys Admin and TCP/IP section and found a lot of good useful info in there. These books are set up for ease of use. The chapters are tabbed in black so you can find what you are looking for real fast. The Index is very comprehensive and it is easy to look stuff up. It has a quick reference pull-out sheet like the Exam Cram books have. The second edition has some updated information and an expanded index. We should probably be seeing a third edition soon. A third edition or a new one for Windows 2003. This is a useful tool for 2k Sys Admin types and OS power users.
could have fit on 20 pages.......2002-07-09
This book could have fit on the front and back of a single page, laminated pamphlet.
Each entry in the book contains the exact step-by-step instructions on how to open regedit, how to reboot your computer after you've completed editing, etc etc. That wouldn't be bad had these instructions not consumed a whole page each. We're talking about 200 - 250 pages of paper in this book CONTAINING THE EXACT SAME INFORMATION (word for word).
Roots of the Windows 2000 registry........2002-07-03
Hm, well i unlike most of the people with their "reviews" find this book very interesting and well written, this book can take you deep into windows 2000 registry, starting from changing settings of your keyboard and finishing with resolving networking problems through regedit. I got this book from a friend, now i think i'm gonna buy one for myself.
BEST REFERENCE BOOK ON REGISTRY.......2002-06-17
This was the first book that I read concerning the Windows 98 Registry and could have stopped after finishing this book. The other books lacked the concise detail provided by this book.
This book provides what every computer reference book should but doesn't. Readable informative prose combined with detailed instructions clearly outlining how to accomplish any type of editing possible.
I am the caretaker for a computer lab at work and used this book on a daily basis at work and home. I finally purchased a second copy to cut down on wear and tear of the original. The book is a valuable tool and anyone working with Windows 98 on a daily basis should include this book in their library.
Excellent Reference For IT Implementer.......2002-03-29
This book is written in such a way to give the reader maximum amount of useful information in a minimum amount of time. Each tip is included in a self contained section which lists all of the steps necessary to implement the tip. The reader is spared unnecessary information about underlying concepts and developmental theory. One tip that I utilized immediately was to disable that annoying animation everytime a window is minimized or restored. Another was speeding up the menus so when the mouse is moved over a menu, the submenu would appear very quickly. This book is a must for anyone supporting a network or end users.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Beginners.......2000-03-28
When my parents finally bought a computer, they also purchased this book. On the day my mother could explain Windows 98 to me, I bought a copy for myself. Simpson's book lives up to the claim that it is a friendly introduction to the basics. The author assumes that the reader has little or no prior computer experience, and the book may be used as either a tutorial or a reference. Simpson knows not only Windows 98, but also how to communicate it to readers. If you're new to computers or tired of just getting by in Windows 98, try this text. Illustrations, keywords in boldface, and marginal highlights make the material easier to find, learn, and remember. Additionally, there are chapter-end summaries. I also enjoy having room to make notes in the margins. The content includes: understanding hardware and software basics, organizing windows, managing files, using the web, getting e-mail, printing, troubleshooting, etc.
