Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional has a lot of things going for it, but useful online documentation is not one of them--particularly if you're not totally clueless about what you want to do and how to do it. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Expert Companion does a good job of explaining how to use the operating system in terms that, while often are too basic for the "Expert" who's mentioned in the title, won't insult the intelligence of a generally capable Windows 2000 user. If you're the administrator of a Windows 2000 network, you'd be wise to keep this book on hand as a resource for users who come to you with questions about how to make adjustments to their workstations. It'll come in handy, too, when you have to tweak user machines yourself.

Authors Craig Stinson and Carl Siechert provide lots of background information on numerous topics, and frequently insert useful blurbs on potential pitfalls. (They cover easily neglected stuff, like forgetting to open a port in your firewall for time-synchronization services.) Where it's appropriate, Stinson and Siechert give you step-by-step instructions for accomplishing tasks; these are reinforced by tables that enumerate options and alternatives. Overall, this is a highly effective (if unexciting) book about configuring Windows 2000 Professional. --David Wall

Topics covered: Windows 2000 Professional for the competent user and network administrator. All critical operations are explained, including hardware, software, and user administration. The same goes for local area networks (LANs) and Internet connectivity.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but old and incomplete.......2003-05-19

Well-written and excellent for novices. However whole topics are either skipped over hastily (e.g. troubleshooting) or omitted altogether (e.g. multimedia support). A bit out-of-date, considering it covers the original release, prior to all Service Packs. Even MS's support site offers more in-depth info on variety of issues.
Still, a handy desktop reference. Those who want to dive in deep may want to look elsewhere.

Finally, a book for users like me! I am an experienced computer user with a deep background in many operating systems including Unix. I want consise information to help me really understand Windows 2000 as an expert user. It is not hard to find such books for Unix, probably because you pretty much have to be an expert to use Unix. Most Windows books, on the other hand, seem to be addressed to non-computer people.

I use this book regularly to look things up, but I've also enjoyed just browsing around discovering interesting things about Windows 2000. Actually, the book has given me a whole new appreciation of the operating system.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete and Easy to read Reference.......2001-05-17

I am an MCSE, MCT, etc etc and like others found answers in a few minutes to questions I have had for months. This is a GREAT book! The author states it is not meant to be read cover to cover, but instead to be used to research a particular issue. It certianly does what he intended very well, but I for one will read it through.

The book takes a systematic approach to Windows 2000 issues and covers each topic in a clear to the point manner that is amazingly easy to read. It is complete enough for the seasoned network admin, but easy enough to follow for the entry level support tech. However, I would not reccomend it for the regular Windows user due to the technical nature of the topics covered.

I just ordered a copy for everyone on my support staff. You will want to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Reference.......2001-03-16

Amazon.com Readers,

I have had many questions about Windows 2000, especially surrounding the installation of programs under multiple user accounts, for a while. I went to Microsoft conferences and computer trade shows to find answers to these questins, and was still not able to understand. However, when I went to my local bookstore and found this book, just a look through the table of contents pointed me to chapters that were right to the point, and answered my question right away. Needless to say, I was very happy to find this book, and I am adding it to my collection of technical books.

I highly recommend this title.

Take care,

--Daniel
