Que Education & Training is coming out with this Windows 98 book early and at half price. It's based on the contents of preliminary beta releases from Microsoft. The preview readers get here is welcome, and it lets the curious know what's coming.
This is straight, user-level documentation of Windows 98 itself and its companion accessories. You'll find out how to do such things as format a disk, copy a file, and get electronic mail with Outlook Express. Further, you'll get the latest on using new features of Windows 98, including the Active Desktop, ISDN line support, and the FAT32 file system. Unfortunately, the latest isn't very comprehensive--the coverage of ISDN here is cursory.
The fact is, Windows 98 apparently isn't going to be drastically different from Windows 95. It will be a more robust system that resists bugs, the early reviewers say, but mostly it will be more of the same. For that reason, this book bears a strong resemblance to Windows 95 books for consumers (as opposed to books for software developers) and is adequate for the purpose it aims to serve. --David Wall

A Great Teaching Reference.......1999-11-06
Using Windows 98, while being only a preview edition, is a great resource. There is enough content for beginning and intermediate level courses. While I prefer color graphics with screen shots, this book does offer easy step-by-step instructions for most tasks. For a beginning level course the first 12 or so chapters are great, and then skipping to the end for an introduction to the help system is called for. The middle section of the book is has perfect content for an intermediate level course. The only two things I do not like about the book are that it doesn't have colored graphics, as I mentioned before, and it is a preview edition, which means that small amounts of information are incorrect.
