For those willing to exchange the glossiness of mass-market operating systems for better performance and greater flexibility, Linux is an excellent choice. In Linux Companion for System Administrators, Jochen Hein has produced a highly readable treatise on this operating system's design and capabilities.

Generally, Hein focuses on characteristics that all versions of Linux have in common and highlights differences among distributions where appropriate. He starts with core aspects of Linux (such as the file system and the boot process) before moving on to ancillary programs and capabilities. (Coverage of multiple-language capabilities is especially good.) Readers also will find plenty of information on networking--there's full coverage of all aspects of TCP/IP implementation and documentation of many network applications.

The main shortcoming in Linux Companion for System Administrators is its lack of specific procedures. You'll find plenty of tables and option lists, plus prose that's clear despite its translation from the German, but there's very little explicit how-to information. If that's what you need, you'll want to supplement this book with a more basic one. --David Wall

For instance, I would have understood the System Logs part just fine if it said it logs in the format " . ", and listed the different origin and importance options.

Excellent.........Just what I expected.......1999-09-09

This is the first Linux book that starts answering the right questions from page one. I often have to get deep into a technical book before I follow how the author thinks. Somehow I was immediately at ease with layout. There is also enough technical theory to fill in my limited knowledge of exactly how Linux works.

I can recommend this book to all intermediate to advanced users. Especially those who would like to set-up a Linux network.

Wonderful, But not for newbies.......1999-08-07

After scanning the shelves of five bookstores, this was the ONLY book that answered my questions on Samba, NFS, and startup daemons enough to actually get me going. It's terse, but the information is all there. If the defaults are good enough, don't bother. If you want Linux running the way YOU want it, this is a great starting point.

Shallow and broad - not generally useful.......1999-06-07

Hein covers alot. Unfortunately, there's very little detail. If you want to get a general taste for Linux, it's probably OK, but if you have jumped in and really need information, there's no depth here. I was (am?) a Linux neophyte when I installed RH5.2 and bought several books. Although I keep looking in Hein's book, I haven't found it useful even once. Not once. I recommend Welsh and Kaufman's Running Linux (O'Reilly) and HIGHLY recommend Butzen and Hilton's The Linux Network.

Nice in combination with RFC's ;-).......1999-03-17

Although a lot is covered in detail, it sometimes lacks just that little extra piece of info (yes, that part where you have to jump into the RFC's). But IMHO Jochen Hein wrote an excellent admin book, very clear and complete. Nice job! Recommended for starting linux-admins (those who already know how to install and repartition ;-)).

If you are in search of a large, impressive looking book, with pages and pages of hard to find information mixed with wordy dialog, this is the book for you. If however you are in search a book to assist you with the day to day issues faced administering SCO UNIX your money is much better spent on SCO Unix in a Nutshell or UNIX System Administration Handbook 3rd edition.

Just the basis about SCO and admin. If you don't know anything about computer and SCO, this is book is good for you.

This book talks about just about every aspect of the SCO operating system - but at a high level. It is helpful in understanding how files and process interact with each other but if you actually want to use this information at the keyboard of your SCO system, look elsewere.

Excellent read for more indepth knowledge of SCO OpenServer........1999-03-28

This book details a lot of the inner workings of SCO's OpenServer release 5. It describes in plenty of detail, the why and how's to SCO's OpenServer product. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in SCO OpenServer.

An In-Depth Look........1998-12-12

Few computer books offer what they promise; SCO Companion does this and much more, delving into areas of the Unix OS that most other books don't even touch upon. From how Unix works, to why, and everything in-between, this is one of those rare finds in the technical-book world; one you will enjoy reading just for the enjoyment of it.

no nonsense guide.......2000-05-05

I have read all those heavy weighted books like linux bible, master linux etc and find alot of craps in them. But this book althought is only 160pg excluding appendix make learning linux a real simple journey. like the title imply, the author concentrate on the essential stuff using the command line which is a must know for all linux user. I would highly recomend this book to beginner who want a quick tutorial on using linux via the command console, without going tru the unnecesary craps.

The book is very short compared to most books out there, but I found it extremely useful. It summarizes the essential commands without delving heavy into a discussion of X. X may be the most popular administration tool these days, but sometimes it's nice to know where and what to use from the command line. It won't tell you everything (no one book will), but it will get you started if your having trouble.

Not a bad book, but old. The o.s. has gone far beyond the scope of this book. If you have a distro of LINUX newer than 1997 forget it.

Classic Unix Book.......2000-03-06

A good book to cover the basics and intermediate stuff about being a Unix admin. It covers adding users to the system, backingup and restoring, security, X-Windows, printer queues, keeping your eye on disk space and job management. It gets into some Kernal tweaking, startup/shutdown scripts (for AIX, System V, BSD), diskless booting, and entire chapter on the file system, backup and restores, users admin, sendmail, terminals, system auditing and tuning.
