3 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things..........2006-08-31

Good:
-Good coverage of main topics (DHCP, DSN, AD).
-Practical perspective, examples and troubleshooting.
-A lot of information that eventually could be useful.

Bad:
-Fisically the book is too big, difficult to hold, this becomes a problem. It should be divided in two parts, the important topics and the rarely used information.
-Minasi exposition is not clear. He tries so hard to entertain the reader, and his writing lacks structure. He jumps to specific topics that extend many pages, use too many words to express simple things. Sometimes is really exasperating: "come on man, GET TO THE POINT!, don't waste my time".
-Have a lot of typos, i think because is based in the prior edition.

I think the book is too tangled to be useful for begginers, and too disperse to be helpful for experts. No doubt Minasi has profound knowledge of the product and writing skills, but needs STRUCTURE and SOBRIETY.

I rate the book three stars just because knowing nothing i made it settting a windows network with DSN,DHCP,Active directory,VPN and Terminal services. The book contains the information but the reader, not the author, is who organize it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too much fluff..........2006-08-12

I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

5 out of 5 stars A response to Joaquin Menchaca from an Apple Certified Tech Coordinator.......2006-07-30

You know, there are times I despair at the treatment of Macintoshes in Windows-centric books. Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

This book is not one of those times. I got a copy of this book when it first came out, and continue to recommend it to my Windows IT friends. And I do strongly recommend they read the Mac Integration chapter, with one caveat:
Consider the pubishing date.

If you read the chapter in its entirety, you'll see the author mentions that OSX 10.2.3 is the "latest version of the Mac OS as of this writing". OSX 10.2.3 came out in December 2002. The next patch, 10.2.4, came out in February 2003. This gives me a good idea when the book was written. Now, not a lot has changed in the Windows world since early 2003 (barring R2) but on the Mac side, it's been a lifetime.

I clearly remember the 10.2 days - and struggling to get OSX to play nice with Windows. Apple was still cleaning up the code back then, and it showed. The only way to do DNS on a 10.2 server was to learn BIND (and configure UNIX files) - Apple used NetInfo for their directory (as the Minasi chapter clearly states) - it wasn't until towards the end of 10.2.x that LDAPv3 finally became usable. (And Apple officially dumped NetInfo as their primary directory in 10.3). OSX 10.2 (while much better then 10.1) was like Windows XP before SP1. A painful preview of a future promise.

For a book that talks about connecting Macs from OS 8.6 through OSX 10.2.3, the chapter is fantastic. Sure, today it's easy for me to tell 10.2 users "Man, upgrade to Tiger... you'll love it" (which is my current solution) but back then, 10.2 was the latest and greatest. As the chapter mentions, SMB access (SAMBA) was moody, erratic, and only authenticated to the server's local SAM, not to AD. Making it a mixed blessing at best. But AFP to SFM still worked great, and if you could get SFM on the Windows file server, it was much nicer then OSX's native SMB support. SMB didn't really become practical until 10.3. Under 10.4 "Tiger" it's great.

Trying to use SFM with 10.3 or 10.4 clients is not advisable. SMB works great, use it instead. (And the SMB commands given in the book work fine with 10.3 and 10.4) Using SFM with 10.4 does work - I've personally used it - but it does require you to download the OSX UAM from Microsoft's website, as mentioned in the chapter. Also, if you're not careful about how you configure permissions on the Windows server, it can appear as if the files are unreadable. This isn't corruption, just permissions. For these reasons, I recommend SMB for OSX 10.3 and higher.
But if you have 10.2 or older machines on the network, and upgrading isn't an option, then look at SFM.

The squabble about SFM vs. SMB aside, it was really nice to read a chapter that covered common issues with file sharing between PCs and Macs - Resource forks and file extensions are still a concern today. I still have Mac users who insist on saving files called "Project Notes 18/06/2006" unaware of how the "/" plays havoc with Windows users. Not to mention the lack of ".doc"! And I'm constantly having to explain to Windows IT people the difference between flat-file volumes (FAT32 and NTFS) and forked-file volumes (HFS+).

To say there was no homework done on this chapter is ridiculous when OSX printing discusses CUPS integration (Something that most "Mac people" don't even know about!), file sharing discusses authentication modules (The MS UAM vs. Apple Encryption vs Clear Text), and it even touches on OSX Server. Of course, OSX Server 10.2 is nothing like 10.4, so using this section for current integration is not a good idea. :)

I'm not sure what Joaquin was expecting when he read the chapter - unlike websites, hardcopy can't change past the publish date. This book was written in the 10.2 days. Applying OSX 10.1 or 10.2 advice and information to OSX 10.3 or 10.4 is not advised. But if you've got any 10.2 or older machines on the network (even *shudder* OS8.6 machines) then the chapter is great.

And the last page of the chapter was as forward thinking as possible - the chapter predicts that Apple will come up with a "snap-in of some sort" to easily integrate Apple's directory (at the time, NetInfo) with Active Directory. This was written, at the latest, in February 2003. (based on the release date of 10.2.4)... In October of 2003, Apple released 10.3, which had migrated to LDAPv3, and provided the Active Directory plugin to Directory Access. And all my schema-changing LDIF files went out the window. As predicted.

If all you care about is Macs, this book isn't for you - After all, there are hundreds of pages about Windows 2003 Server that don't even discuss Macs! (Imagine, a Windows book focused on Windows!) But the Mac chapter is an excellent overview of Mac OS 8.6-10.2 integration for Windows people. And for once, it's not a Windows book full of false Mac information. I'd rather my Windows compatriots read info about an older OS that was actually accurate then read up-to-date info about the current OS that's nothing but a pile of misinformation.

After all, most Windows people who've worked with pre-SP2 and post-SP2 XP machines (and all the fun changes there) are smart enough to realize there's probably a difference between OSX 10.2.3 and OSX 10.4.7. Or heck, OSX 10.5 which will probably be here in a month or so.

4 out of 5 stars All-in-one.......2006-07-12

I'm often leery of the computer books that try to cram everything about a given technology under one cover, but Mastering Windows Server 2003 proved the exception to the rule. I bought this book along with Russel and Crawford's Windows Server 2003 Administrator Guide, and I feel that Minasi's was the better of the two. This book covers all the major tasks you will be asked to do with Windows Server 2003. Beginners should buy this book.

I've come across several random problems when dealing with my own 2003 servers, and what makes Minasi's book superior is that the answer is always there. Disk usage, IPSec, Active Directory, IIS: all these topics are covered with satisfactory depth. I knew I had a comprehensive book when I needed to change the default drive letters of my Windows machine and found the answer within. The only negatives I would give this book are the padding (with the obligatory `History of the Internet') and the physical weight of the book. It is a one-stop-shop, however, so those complaints are largely trivial.

The Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Guide by Russel and Crawford covers similar material, but Minasi gives enough information to fully apply the knowledge. Russel and Crawford were just too brief in the sections that I needed, so I would recommend Mastering Windows Server 2003 over all the others I have read. Interestingly, many of the examples in both tomes are copied almost verbatim from the Microsoft website. It may be worth your time to look there before buying.

Written with the intermediate to advanced C programmer in mind, Mastering Algorithms with C delivers a no-nonsense guide to the most common algorithms needed by real-world developers.

The highlight of the book has to be its concise and readable C functions for all the algorithms presented here, including basics like linked lists, stacks to trees, graphs, and sorting/searching algorithms. The C functions that implement these algorithms are clearly printed and remarkably easy to read. You can use this sample code directly or adapt it into your C/C++ code.

Although mathematical concepts like Big-O notation are discussed, the authors don't get bogged down in the computer science theory surrounding algorithms. Instead, they present the most tried-and-true algorithms available today in an efficient format. Besides introducing each algorithm, they describe how each is used in computing today, along with a short demo application. Some of these samples are quite low-level, such as a virtual memory manager implemented with linked lists. Most examples are more of general interest, such as a graphing example that counts network hops.

Each section ends with questions and answers about how the algorithms work, along with references to other algorithms (both in the book and from other sources). The authors concentrate on the most useful algorithms available today and don't try to cover every available variation. Busy readers will appreciate the intelligent selection--and efficient presentation--used here.

There are a number of books on C algorithms, but Master Algorithms with C is one of the most concise and immediately useful. It's a perfect choice for the working C/C++ programmer who's in a hurry to find just the right algorithm for writing real-world code. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Algorithm efficiency, pointer basics, arrays, recursion, Big-O Notation, linked lists, stacks, queues, sets, hash tables, trees and B-trees, searching, heaps and priority queues, graphs, sorting and searching algorithms, numerical methods, data compression, Huffman coding, LZ77, data encryption, DES, RSA, graph algorithms, minimum spanning trees, geometric algorithms, and convex hulls.

Book Description

There are many books on data structures and algorithms, and some books laying out useful libraries of C functions, but this book aims to give you a unique combination of theoretical background and working code. In offering robust solutions for everyday programming tasks, Mastering Algorithms with C avoids the abstract style of most classic data structures and algorithms texts but still provides all the information you need to understand the purpose and use of common programming techniques. Implementations, as well as interesting, real-world examples of each data structure and algorithm, are shown in the text. Full source code appears on the accompanying disk. Using both a programming style and a writing style that are exceptionally clean, Kyle Loudon shows you how to use such essential data structures as lists, stacks, queues, sets, trees, heaps, priority queues, and graphs. He shows you how to use algorithms for sorting, searching, numerical analysis, data compression, data encryption, common graph problems, and computational geometry. He also describes the relative efficiency of all implementations. The compression and encryption chapters not only give you working code for reasonably efficient solutions, they explain concepts in an approachable manner for people who never have had the time or expertise to study them in depth. Anyone with a basic understanding of the C language can use this book. In order to provide maintainable and extendible code, an extra level of abstraction (such as pointers to functions) is used in examples where appropriate. Understanding that these techniques may be unfamiliar to some programmers, Loudon explains them clearly in the introductory chapters. Contents include:

3 out of 5 stars good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment.......2004-12-13

compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!.......2004-11-09

The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).

Unfortunately this book has 2 mayor problems:

Sometimes you need an implementation of an algorithm for which you already know the inner-workings, just need quick code instead of reinvening the wheel yourself... the book will not allways give you that, it will sometimes build an algorithm based on previous ones! Darn!, I am supposed to go straight to the point I want and get the code without having to read a couple of previous sections.

Second and worst of all is the coding style this guy has. I don't know what the other reviwer that said that the code is great programs in but certainly not in C. The author of the book simply has the worst style ever... look at the comments, a one line comment surrounded by a box!!! give-me-a-break!... where did he learn this? He should read a book about style, perhaps read Code Complete by Steve McConnel or something before attempting to write code. Anyway this is just one of the many style flaws this book has.

If I could I would return it, after all, you can get mostly any implementation from the internet (I had to do that or would have wasted lots of time and... time is money).

If well written, the book would have been 1/2 its size and then it would have been good.

Why 3 stars? Well, in spite of the poor programming style and bad presentation of some algorithms, if you have time and patience, you get someting out of the book. Just don't use the coding style he uses... if you try that at work you would be fired or at least laughed at.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money.......2003-04-17

To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones. If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C. I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away.

4 out of 5 stars pretty concise and covers enough ground.......2002-07-27

Sure, we all have learnt algorithms back in school. We know the fundamentals, we can talk about them, no sweat. But when it comes the time to actually write out an algorithm in C, we all struggle like George W writing SAT. That's why an algorithm book with real useable sample codes is very useful. O'Reilly has a good reputation for pumping out reference books, but there are, inevitably, hits and misses in the series. This volume is a hit. It covers most frequently used everyday algorithms without going into some obscure and generally useless NP-class problems. Full example codes are given on a floopy for easy porting.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a great book.......2001-11-05

This is truly a wonderful book, consisting recommendations of implementation on most of the basic and common algorithms.
The book is shaped to be useful both for developers with little experience in C programming and also for professionals wanting to learn some more, and maybe make their programs run faster and with greater stability.
Possibly more than anything this book taught me how to get much better memory consumption and smaller code using small yet very intelegently designed functions.

I believe that reading and tryng some of the many examples in this book for your programming needs, would change the way you think in programming, in a way that you would automatically make much more efficiant programs no matter if you write them in C, in C++, in Java, in Perl or any such language for that matter.
Recommended for people that think there might be someting they could improve in their programming especially in C.

This gives you good functional overview but not details for developers.

1 out of 5 stars Um livro decepcionante.......2007-02-04

Comprei o livro baseado nos comentários, e nas informações divulgadas pela editora. Na contracapa a editora escreve: "the most updated information on how to use SAP BW to design, build, deploy, populate, access, analyze, present, and administer data."

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-05-02

I have been managing large BW environments for over 6 years. My people and I agree that this book is informative and worthwhile reading.

It's too bad that SAP hasn't created a desktop version of BW so we all could play with it offline and practice what we learn from books like this. But, I understand why they might not want to do so.

Enjoy the read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview.......2005-10-08

This book provides an excellent overview of SAP's BW. However for myself the book did not provide the types of details I was hoping for. I'm new to SAP BW, however I have extensive experience with EDW, ETL, OLAP, and BI solutions. So revisiting common concepts was not productive for me. However I would see how this text would be helpful for a SAP guru who is being introduced to BW, and Data Warehousing concepts for the first time. I would still suggest this book to anyone. Hope this helps, Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars A nice book of of BW.......2003-12-26

I've read 2 books on BW, compared with another book I¡¯ve read, this book is on BW 3.0B which is a more mature DW product of SAP, it not only focuses on the BW transactional stuff but also tries to explain the detailed theories and business cases which are the more valuable points for me. If you¡¯re a BW beginner, this book may not be suitable since it¡¯s not going to teach you how to extract data, setup info source , create data target or create queries in a detail instruction way, but instead bring you a very completely high-level picture of BW architecture and solutions.

The best chapters I would prefer are: Chapter 4 ¨C Information Modeling; Chapter 6 ¨C ETL Services and Chapter 8 ¨C Analytic Application.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for any network programmer.......2003-09-17

This is an excellent reading for any network programmer. More than ACE itself the concepts covered are of a great value. I am a beginner to intermediate network programmer, but an experienced programmer otherwise, and found this to be an extremely valuable resource in terms tackling large application frameworks from the ground up. The concepts are precise upto the point but extremely easy to read and digest. Of course, the book is assuming that you know quite a bit of every thing else that is not covered here. There are quite a bit of things that are totally missing or not correct based on the OS and the advances in Posix threading. Nevertheless this is an excellent source for any network programmer.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2003-01-15

I discovered ACE almost two years ago after a coworker told me about it. As a developer in the networking / streaming media / distributed computing space, i've all too often run into the problems that are inherent in developing this sort of software -- scalability, maintainability, not to mention all of those bugs ...

ACE makes all of that much easier, and delivers the promise of true reuseability; not just classes, but common behaviors (patterns). This book explains why ACE was needed, the problems it solves, and how to use it. Though it's highly technical, it's not boring or overly verbose -- the problems developing networked apps are presented, and the solution ACE uses as well. Doug and Steve did an amazing job with this ... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good ACE overview.......2002-11-29

I have been trying to learn ACE for the past few months now. Their docs are not that great. I ran C++ doc generator on the API's and that helped alot. The book really closed the deal for me. I work with many customers that are just begining to use ACE and I recomended this book to them as well.

3 out of 5 stars Read the on-line docs first.......2002-06-01

I became interested in ACE for a project I'm working on, so before spending money on a book I decided to check out all the on-line documentation, which is pretty detailed. That wasn't quite enough to get me over the learning curve, so I went and bought the book. I was disappointed though - while it was very clear and thorough, it didn't tell me much more that what I had already learned. So my advice is to save your money and stick with the on-line documentation and tutorials.

5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Informative Book.......2002-04-25

I understood ACE much better after reading this book and would highly recommend it to anybody doing network programming. It is a wonderful reading - very clearly written and extremely informative.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for incoming medical students.......2007-01-29

I've read quite a few books now to prepare myself for medical school and this one is by far the best. It gives you a good idea of how much a medical student needs to study, good advice on how to make your own schedule, and teaches you how to study. She tells the reader that studying in medical school is a whole different world than the studying done in undergrad. She shows you which techniques to use and which to leave behind in with your college books. Her stratagies make memorizing and understanding loads of information seem doable. Buy this book or learn the hard way.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-03-17

This book was very helpful. I was able to quickly learn and program classes, file streams, collections and graphics. The chapters on database programming were not as helpful as I was not able to get a database up and running. All in all, I'm very happy with the book. I'm a casual programmer and I used a pre-dot-NET version of Visual Basic, so I needed a book that I could read in bits and pieces to quickly get up to speed on object oriented programming and dot-NET. I had a difficult time catching on using Microsoft's impossible help facility and the training materials that Microsoft put out.

4 out of 5 stars All in one.......2005-06-01

very good book helps the programmer to get what he needs in the shortest time, well organized, very clear and has useful examples.
it covers many topics in one book (SQL server, ADO.NET and C# database programming) in a way that makes it easy to do your code without opening too many books.
the only limitation is that it covers only SQL server database programming, I wished if it covers alos Oracle and MySql.

4 out of 5 stars Good concise introduction to SQL Server 2000 / C#.......2004-12-28

This book is a good introductionto SQL server 2000 programming with C#. The author introduces the basics of SQL server in the first part and focuses on the ADO.NET in the second part. I like the format well. Overall a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Great, but not for the beginners.......2004-11-02

This book is probably the best book in the market if you want to take your novice c# asp.net skills to intermediate/expert level. It provides plenty of good examples and practically all the knowledge you need to become a fully competent c# asp.net developer.

I especially found the chapter on SQL and T-SQL particulary awesome. As a Senior DBA who has worked on SQL for 7 years, I thought the author had superb knowledge of SQL transactions which I rarely see even amongst the SQL books. I highly suggest every c# developer to delve deelply into the SQL chapters of this book as it will increase your T-SQL transaction knowledge exponentially.

    4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2004-06-16

I found this book to be very helpful to me in connecting and using the Microsoft Access database with some Visual Studio C# programming I was struggling with. It is the only book I have found that at all addresses Access and it adequately covers the needed information to make the connection and manipulate data using SQL. Whether you are using Access of SQL2000 and especially if you are struggling I highly recommend this book to you.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-06-02

I thought it's great to C# programmers,as a reference Tool Book, and there also were lots of kind job to work with the Database....

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good begining book.......2002-09-29

This book provides a good "intro" for a newcomer to DC- especially if you will be relying on the metro for transportation, as it lists what metro lines to take to local shopping centres. This may seem trivial, but when you need a can opener two days after moving and have no car it becomes very important.

The only problms is that the info is very likly to become dated very quickly- especially the restaurant guide. Newer establishments and attractions weren't listed. As well, there seems to be a bias to certain areas with more "trendy" attractions, and a glossing over of less popular (and less expensive to live in) areas.

    5 out of 5 stars A great resource - worth the money.......2001-08-14

As a recent college graduate and a new arrival to the DC area, I have found "Mastering DC" to be a fantastic resource. It gives the details without the fluff that I have found in many of the DC guidebooks. In addition to information on the immediate DC Metro area, it also gives in depth coverage of the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia, which I have found useful. The recommendations are opinionated without seeming biased and the descriptions are enjoyable to read.

I recommend this book as a gift to anyone with a loved one or friend moving to the area!

5 out of 5 stars From the cornfields to the Capitol.......2000-11-14

This is a great book for those relocating to DC, VA, or MD. It explains the different neighborhoods and cultures, gives tips to getting past the utility and licensing red tape, and has some fun weekend acitivity suggestions, too. It's certainly not the definitive book on DC, but it has a useful level of detail on a broad array of topics.

I moved from Indiana about 6 months ago and this book was worth the price about 10 times over.

4 out of 5 stars A helpful, to the point guide!.......2000-06-25

Having just moved to DC, I was inundated with books about the city. Unfortunately, most of them were meant for tourists rather than new residents. This book offered helpful and entertaining information about life in the Capitol, and some very practical tips, especially regarding transportation/getting around.

5 out of 5 stars No Washington Office should be without this informative book.......1999-04-08

I wish this book had been around when I came to the DC Area. It contains everything you need to know to get your new home connected with services and to find your way around the area. An invaluable book! I highly recommend it as a gift to someone you know who is moving to the area. I also find the book a great reference to keep in the office for "visiting dignitaries" and their families. It's a quick resource on Metro DC tourist sites.
