Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09

When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.

Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.

In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.

After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).

So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).

Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.

I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".

4 out of 5 stars Seeds of Wisdom!.......2007-05-18

Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.

Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are a rookie or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Sorry, there is no Holy Grail in the stock market you better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all novice trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it sinks in their minds.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2007-04-18

nothing new, nothing exciting. Everything can be found in books that are half the price. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27

I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.

and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)

and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"

YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

5 out of 5 stars One of the better books.......2007-02-03

Will this book make you rich? Probably not. But it will start you on the path to making money in the stock market. Like most who trade, you have to have learned from your mistakes in order to make money.

Velez makes the concepts simple and easy to understand. This book intoduces new traders to many technical concepts and puts them in simple terms. For an experienced trader you might learn a few things. As with all experienced traders, who have read many books, you're just looking for "one nugget"

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars QuickBooks 2007 The Official Guide.......2007-05-29

I am only doing the basic functions with Quickbooks including automatic downloads from my bank. I have not used this book at all and frankly have trouble finding what I need. I feel the small guide that comes with the software and the online tuorials and 30 day free 24/7 support is adequate.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Guide.......2007-05-23

Although I haven't gone very far with the Guide, it is generally a disappointment, at least for this Mac user of Quickbooks Pro. (It is possible that the Guide is intended for Windows users, but it was sold by Amazon as a package with Quickbooks Pro for the Mac. While this difference might explain problems with suggested keyboard shortcuts and depicted windows that aren't the same as those in the application, it does not excuse the shoddy index.)

The procedural sections (e.g., Do This First in the appendix) are passible. However even here, the instructions are often incorrect. For example, in Creating Accounts, the Guide instructs the user to press CNTL-A to open the accounts window, whereas the actual keyboard shortcut is Shift-Apple-A. Moreover, the two windows shown in the book to create an account are really just one (different) window in the application.

My major problem with the Guide is my inability to use it as a reference manual for answering specific questions. For example, finding specific pieces of information (e.g., how do I enter To Do Notes as Reminders?) is impossible. Even more frustrating, entries listed in the Index are incorrect. For example, if one looks up "Accrual-based accounting, About", one is directed to p.153; unfortunately, there is no reference to accrual-based accounting on page 153.

All-in-all, for those wanting more information on how to use Quickbooks Pro, I'd recommend using the Help feature in the application or the material on Intuit's web page.

5 out of 5 stars Quickbooks 2007 for Dummies.......2007-03-10

This book really helped me get a grasp on the everyday tasks of quickbooks! Definitely would recommend for a first-timer!

4 out of 5 stars Very useful guide.......2007-03-09

This has proven to be a very useful guide and a nice reference to have handy when dealing with QuickBooks. Easy to navigate and to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Help guide.......2007-02-23

A little complicated for a beginner to QuickBooks, but helpful in many areas.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the subject, needs a better publisher.......2007-04-29

This book was published in 2006 by Corwin Press. To me a new publisher not very well known. I mostly read fiction or computer books. I am also a teacher in a large university hospital, at least to Dutch standards. Education is progressing and the use of the web with students becomes common sense. Besides Blackboard the use of wikis in educating medical students recently started in our curriculum. Since I am interested in computer, software and the web this urged me to look for books that are about web tools and integration of these techniques in education.

This book is a good starter. It has 9 chapters. The first chapter is about the web and how it is changing life. Skipped it, not much news here. The following 2 chapters are about blogs. Followed by chapters about wikis, RSS, social bookmarking, Flickr and podcasting and screencasting. The chapters become shorter in this order. Probably because the later chapters describe newer technologies with less educational experience. The chapters usually describe the tool and simple howto's for choosing and using the free variants of the software. I find the software described very usefull and up to date. The author Will Richardson is obviously a very experienced educator. His examples are very good. Example websites and blogs are presented in all chapters. The only problem is that these links are difficult to type in your browser and sometimes outdated.

Conclusion

A very good introductory book for integration of new web technology in education. The examples are illustrative allthough mainly for high school students. The main critique is the lay out of the book. Next edition I suggest a lay out comparable to O'Reilly's books. This editor obviously is more used to publishing IT books. Another suggestion would be an accompanying website for errata's, links, updated links, and new links.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!.......2007-04-27

Thank you to Will Richardson for providing us with a book that is filled with practical information on blogs, wikis, podcasts, and other powerful tech tools. When I purchased my book, I found that I couldn't put it down. There were ideas that I could try immediately to helped me begin my journey of implementation. So many books only talk about theory, but this book gives you tips on what to do right now to get started on these topics. I found the book to be refreshing and exciting, and one that I reference often. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and other Powerful Tools for Classrooms.......2007-04-14

This book explains what blogs, wikis, and podcasts are as well as other new technology innovations. It also goes further to explain how these things can be used in the classroom. It references various websites that could be helpful to teachers.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Text for Educators.......2007-03-22

This gentleman is a great teacher who clearly and simply explains the topics at hand - blog, wiki, podcast, social bookmarking, aggregators, RSS feeds, etc. A wonderful book for educators and everyone else! I am now using most of his suggestions and I just bought the book in February. If you want to blog, podcast, contribute to wikis, participate in social bookmarking and understand how it can benefit your endeavors, see how you can find the most popular sites for the day, and understand news better than you ever did before and be able to digest 100% more than you did before, then this book is for you.

He uses examples directly from his classroom experience and gives teachers great suggestions in how this can be used to differentiate education for the many students they have. Students can sign up for RSS (real simple syndication) feeds of the teacher's blog (concerning classroom and assignments) and keep up with all classroom requirements and classroom news(so can their parents). The teacher could sign up for student blogs, just like students can sign up for the teacher's. Students can sign up for each others. Then all of the students information would be delivered in one place every day for the teacher. Students could use their blogs as portfolios of their work, musings about projects, questions they have, up-to-the-minute thoughts, comments to groups with whom they are working, etc. With social bookmarking (explained in book), you can add a code to your bookmarks and your students can search for those with just that code and create an RSS feed to be sent to their individual aggregators. In this way, if you have six students working on a project for Egypt and you, the teacher, bookmark and save five good Websites the students would find helpful to their project, if you add the code while bookmarking the site, the students will have those delivered to their aggregators automatically and will see your notes that accompany them on a daily basis. The teacher could note in his or her blog what codes would be used for which project, so the appropriate students would sign up for the RSS feed to be sent to their aggregator. This may sound complicated but Will Richardson makes it extremely easy. This book apparently comes in a paperback form as well, which is about half the price of the hardbound copy. I thought it was rather pricey at first (I bought the hardbound copy not knowing about the paperback) but after reading it and using it, it's worth ten times its price. I think that it would be beneficial for college professors in education to recommend this to their students or use it as one of their required texts. Thanks to Will Richardson for writing such a great and useful book.

Book Description

When it comes to advertising on the web, you just can't argue with the numbers. A $7 billion market today is expected to grow to $18.9 billion by 2010. Jupiter Research also estimates that search advertising will be a larger share of the market than display advertising by 2010. These phenomenal numbers are due largely to Google, which has changed the way the world publishes content - and advertises.

Google Advertising Tools from O'Reilly examines the business and technology behind making money with content and advertising on the web. This focused, easy-to-read guide shows you how to use Google's advertising services to make it happen. You'll find all the background information you need to work with Google AdSense, which automatically delivers text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site, and Google AdWords, which lets you generate text ads that accompany specific search term results.

This book has specific and detailed sections on:

Once you've read all four parts, you'll have a comprehensive picture of how advertising works on the web and how you can use the Google advertising programs to your advantage.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-01-10

This book was OK, I mean it has some good information but you can find most of it online so it is more of a resource book instead of a book having especially valuable information.

Im glad I bought it cause I now have a resource book on the shelf and dont have to search online and I often have limited time.

If you have the time to research online then do that, otherwise by this book.

3 out of 5 stars a book to begin.......2007-01-07

if you are interested on how search engines work this a book you can start

3 out of 5 stars Useful Information.......2006-12-05

While I found the book useful and inspiring, the author did bounce all over the place and made some strange comments. He even devoted an entire chapter to marketing adult sites, which I thought was a bit strange. Davis wrote at all levels conceptually, theoretically and tactically - which is good. Overall, it's a useful book with good information.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, lack of statistics.......2006-11-10

Overall, this book offered a comprehensive review of the online advertisement options including Amazon associates program, google adsense, adwords and other ads aggregators etc. The author also touched the dos and donts on search optimization. The material covered is targeting business audience and IT professionals; however, it is not really heavy on technical implementation and therefore can be easily digested by average business readers. One small complaint, if more statistics and success stories can be included, this book will be more appealing.

4 out of 5 stars Good book that covers more than just Adsense.......2006-11-08

This is a fairly good book that covers more than just adsense.

Competing revenue programs like adbrite and the Amazon associates programs are also dicussed.
Even adult websites are covered with tips on how to generate money from them.

It also covers Search Engine optimization and submission.

It was an easy read with good tips that should come in useful.

Pro ADO.NET 2.0 is a guide and reference for.NET developers who are looking to further their understanding of ADO.NET 2.0.

This book takes a new approach, focusing on the practical tasks like connecting to the database, retrieving data, and working with transactions, rather than rehashing much of the MSDN documentation. Pro ADO.NET 2.0 offers the deep and much needed practical understanding, viewpoint, and knowledge developers are looking for.

This book explains what is available in ADO.NET by associating it with the need to solve a practical problem and better architect an application, rather than mugging up the hundreds of classes and properties available in the framework.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of ADO.NET 2.0, good examples.......2007-01-10

This was the first book I purchased covering ADO.NET 2.0, and I'm very glad it was.

I am an experienced .NET developer, so I was looking for something that was intelligently written, with good real-world example code snippets that can be plugged directly into apps.

Any good programmer tends to develop a consistent pattern of code for a particular task, so I personally like books that are written by such a developer who has worked with the technology long enough to have developed a good pattern of use. Mr. Malik would fit that description.

Another thing I liked about the book is that it does not spend a lot of time on non-ADO.NET topics, so you don't have to skip through a bunch of fluff chapters to get to the topic at hand. Every chapter is relevant and useful.

After reading his book, I subscribed to the author's blog, which also includes some very useful material.

1 out of 5 stars Too many unnecessary analogy.......2006-10-26

Not intended for "Pro". Analogies used made this very, very slow and boring. Highly technical terms used were unnecessary and repetitive w/c makes this book can loose the momentum of the reader to focus more on the topics.
Not Recommended even with beginners.

2 out of 5 stars Some Critical Data Missing.......2006-07-10

Perhaps I expected too much from this book. There are three long chapters (166 pages) on updating the data base. What is missing is information and examples on handling the inevitable errors that can occur. Too much time is spent on inept ways developers approach design and not enough time on making a good approach (timestamp) robust by defining appropriate error handling methodology. I typically reuse good examples in my code but I have not found a single routine that I can put into production code.

5 out of 5 stars Really good book.......2006-07-04

This is truly the only book you will need to understand ADO.NET. It's not a reference, but that's what we have online help for.

5 out of 5 stars The Best ADO.NET book.......2006-05-07

This is a real-world book. Each topic is explained to the root. The author knows the stuff, no doubt. When I bump into obstacles, I refer to this book and get the answer. I would recommend adding following topics in the next version:
1. SNAC (SQL Natvie access Client)
2. Object Data Source
3. gridview control
Overall, this is the best ADO.NET book out there. Well done!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Introductory book which skips the technical details.......2006-09-25

A book for someone who is developing first embedded system(s). Limited coverage, but has some good references at the end of each chapter that might be helpful to the reader.

1 out of 5 stars Practically Useless.......2006-05-05

Maybe it would be beneficial to a marketing team, but I'm an engineer and I found the book totally useless.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Text.......2004-10-22

This book offers a clear view of the embedded system design process. If you are a newcomer, it can help you clear up the mystery and it is a easy reading. If you have been through a embedded project from ground up, this is not the book for you. Even though I like this book, it lacks of depth and the text closed up in a hurry.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2004-04-25

Good for beginners. Really valuable if you are out of college and in need of directions in this field. The references in the end of each chapter are quite useful. It will give you directions but do not expect any deep/serious discussions about the topics it is supposed to cover.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners or undergrade students only.......2003-08-06

Very good to learn the embedded system world for the new comers.
If you have some experience with project management and know what are the differences between MCUs and development tools, then it is no need to buy it.

Book Description

Ruby on Rails is the super-productive new way to develop full-featured web applications. With Ruby on Rails, powerful web applications that once took weeks or months to develop can now be produced in a matter of days. If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't.

If you're like a lot of web developers, you've probably considered kicking the tires on Rails - the framework of choice for the new generation of Web 2.0 developers. Ruby on Rails: Up and Running takes you out for a test drive and shows you just how fast Ruby on Rails can go.

This compact guide teaches you the basics of installing and using both the Ruby scripting language and the Rails framework for the quick development of web applications. Ruby on Rails: Up and Running covers just about everything you need - from making a simple database-backed application to adding elaborate Ajaxian features and all the juicy bits in between. While Rails is praised for its simplicity and speed of development, there are still a few steps to master on the way. More advanced material helps you map data to an imperfect table, traverse complex relationships, and build custom finders. A section on working with Ajax and REST shows you how to exploit the Rails service frameworks to send emails, implement web services, and create dynamic user-centric web pages. The book also explains the essentials of logging to find performance problems and delves into other performance-optimizing techniques.

As new web development frameworks go, Ruby on Rails is the talk of the town. And Ruby on Rails: Up and Running can make sure you're in on the discussion.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not much value.......2007-05-31

I read through this in an afternoon in a bookstore. I'm wondering... Why would you get this book when for several dollars more you could get the bible of Ruby on Rails: "Agile Web Development with Rails (Pragmatic Programmers)?"

Where this book is overly terse and covers the bare minimum of subjects, AWDwR has lots of details and examples. Get that book and the companion Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide, Second Edition and you're all set for some fun evenings.

Tate has a habit of rushing books out (e.g., Spring: A Developer's Notebook) and this is another one of those. It occurs to me that this book should have been in that "Developer's Notebook" series...

Tate has been ringing the death knell of Java for several years now and extolling the virtues of THE NEXT BIG THING (in this case, Ruby on Rails). He oughta slow down and figure out at least one of these technologies before he attempts to write about it.

Ironically, the next paradigm shift from Java to RoR will probably happen in spite of Mr. Tate's exposition. Stick to AWDwR, you won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars a lot to be desired.......2007-05-18

This book is a really nice book if you only want a cursory overview at a quick pace and have another, better reference. The photo sharing example is not very helpful to me, I don't share photos. I write websites with forms for businesses that uses a db back end and lot's of web services. The db part of rails is the only part of rails covered, not much on creating web forms, not much on deployment, nothing on web services, not enough on rails AJAX integration, generally not enough of anything. I did buy this book thinking I would get a better value of it than I did, but it is definitely overpriced. If you decide to purchase this book, get a used one in good condition - the price will be more appropriate.

To get the best use out of this book, buy or have handy a more in-depth companion book. Also note, a lot of the book has become deprecated by newer versions of rails, so it is a bit out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Short and that's OK.......2007-04-15

A good RoR book that breaks down the basics into easy digestible concepts.

1 out of 5 stars Up and Running ... when?.......2007-03-10

.. you can think if this book as a reference book.

An up & running book should:
1. Start with a hello world
2. Do 4-5 projects illustrating important concepts to get started.

You should just pass on, if your expectations are like mine.

5 out of 5 stars Up and Running, Not the Long Haul - Remember That.......2007-02-12

Here's the problem with Ruby: it's got new object oriented concepts that C++, Java, and C# people won't be able to leverage their full experience.

Here's the problem with Rails: it's so well thought out and so terse, that if you actually start searching for source code that's implementing particular behavior, you come up empty handed -- how does one pick up a library where "the right thing" just happens with "no code"?

Yes, you can pick up a book on Ruby, but just knowing the language syntax and libraries doesn't introduce you to the Ruby Way of doing things. Conversely, picking up a book on Rails won't do you much good unless you know many of the clever tricks of Ruby. All in all, it's a steep learning curve, but the knee of the curve is within reach, then suddenly it flattens out. Consider it a short impedance, but with reasonable effort, greatly rewarding.

This book focuses on getting someone who knows little of Ruby and nothing of Rails up and running - it exposes what's going on under the hood so that when you're done with the book, you're able to get what's going on and dive into the other books with ease.

For example, object messages and method invocations are different beasts in Ruby! You can send a message to an object that doesn't have a corresponding method, rather than throwing an exception, it can divert the message to one or more objects, or even examine the message and invoke some other method. When you send a message GetInvoiceByCustomerId, there is no method with that name, Rails uses reflection on the database to build an SQL statement and return you the correct object, as if by magic.

This book will get you up and running with a real example, including covering the magic of AJAX, and leave you ready for the Pragmatic Programmer series.

Everyone loves Google, and it's the first place many people turn to locate information on the Internet. There's a big gap, though, between knowing that you can use Google to get advance information on your blind date and having a handle on the considerable roster of fact-finding tools that the site makes available. Google Hacks reveals--and documents in considerable detail--a large collection of Google capabilities that many readers won't have even been aware of. Want to find the best price on a pair of leg warmers? Try the Froogle price-searcher that's hidden within the Google site. Interested in finding weblog commentary about a particular subject? Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest call your attention to the special Google syntaxes for that purpose. This book makes it clear that there's lots more to the Google site than typing in a few keywords and trusting the search engine to yield useful results.

If you're a programmer--or even just familiar with a HTML or a scripting language--Google opens up even further. A large part of Google Hacks concerns itself with the Google API (the collection of capabilities that Google exposes for use by software) and other programmers' resources. For example, the authors include a simple Perl application that queries the Google engine with terms specified by the user. They also document XooMLe, which delivers Google results in XML form. In brief, this is the best compendium of Google's lesser-known capabilities available anywhere, including the Google site itself. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to get the most from the Google search engine by using its Web-accessible features (including product searches, image searches, news searches, and newsgroup searches) and the large collection of desktop-resident toolbars available, as well as its advanced search syntax. Other sections have to do with programming with the Google API and simple "scrapes" of results pages, while further coverage addresses how to get your Web page to feature prominently in Google keyword searches.

4 out of 5 stars "Google Hacks" is highly technical.......2006-11-05

This book is an excellent reference for someone with special research needs. However, it is not for the average user as it requires above average technical knowledge. This should be pointed out more directly in the description.

5 out of 5 stars A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH!!.......2006-09-19

Do you want to make your Google searching experience more fruitful? If you do, then this book is for you! Authors Rael Dornfest, Paul Bausch and Tara Calishain, have done an outstanding job of writing a third edition of a book that goes beyond the instruction page to the idea of hacks.

Dornfest, Bausch and Calishain, begin by describing the fundamentals of how Google's search works. Then, the authors show you how to measure Google Mindshare, range farther across the Web, twist and recombine your queries, squeeze the last drop of results out of every search, and even go beyond the bounds of Google's index. Next, they show you how to use a combination of Google tools to gather the latest news and opinions from across the Web. The authors continue by showing you how to integrate Google into your toolbar, desktop, and browser. They also show you how you can use Google Maps to learn about your neighborhood and your world. Then, the authors discuss the proper and improper uses of Gmail. Next, they show you how to use Google's infamous PageRank, how to clean up for a Google visit, how to make money with your pages, and how to make sure your pages aren't indexed by Google if you don't want them to be. Finally, the authors introduce you to the wonders of the Google Search Application Programming Interface (API), which underlies many of the hacks in this book.

This most excellent book is not an exhaustive manual on how every command in the Google syntax works. But, rather, this book shows you some tricks for making the best use of a search.

Nobody browses the web anymore - we all search for whatever we want. This book helps you understand the dark secrets of Google and makes your time on the web more valuable. I only wish I'd bought it sooner!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Pin Point ...........2007-01-10

THis is a very easy to read book, with some examples, some times i wish those were more detailed but they are good... it PIN POINT the clue points (sorry for so many points ) to have more traffic in your page and to correct most of the mistakes made in the desing stage. Bring this idea to my mind... "Web Designers are not the best web Traffic designers for a page " so read this book is a good starting poing....

1 out of 5 stars The info more 2001 than 2006.......2007-01-09

Most of the text are based on how the internetcommunity looked in the beginning of 2000 or 2001. Quite a lot of the facts are actually false today and makes you more harm than good.

I would definitely not recommend this other than a reference "how companies thought of Internet in the beginning of 2001".

1 out of 5 stars The book is too generic. .......2006-03-17

This book has the look, the feel and the content of being designed for taking advantage of absolute beginners in Internet Marketing.

Since beginners do not have much knowledge about the subject, they will not be able to protect themselves from a wasteful expense when purchasing this book.

Why is this book not worth the money? Because if it were a textbook on cooking, it would describe all the ingredients, but not say anything about correct proportions, the order of cooking, the temperature and the time.

One will not become an Internet Marketing Chef by reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best way to promote your business.......2006-03-17

I found this book to be a great resource for helping me to promote my business. I look for more traffic to come my way, to help create better profits for my business.

Book Description

If you have programming experience and a familiarity with C--the dominant language in embedded systems--Programming Embedded Systems, Second Edition is exactly what you need to get started with embedded software. This software is ubiquitous, hidden away inside our watches, DVD players, mobile phones, anti-lock brakes, and even a few toasters. The military uses embedded software to guide missiles, detect enemy aircraft, and pilot UAVs. Communication satellites, deep-space probes, and many medical instruments would have been nearly impossible to create without embedded software.

The first edition of Programming Embedded Systems taught the subject to tens of thousands of people around the world and is now considered the bible of embedded programming. This second edition has been updated to cover all the latest hardware designs and development methodologies.

The techniques and code examples presented here are directly applicable to real-world embedded software projects of all sorts. Examples use the free GNU software programming tools, the eCos and Linux operating systems, and a low-cost hardware platform specially developed for this book. If you obtain these tools along with Programming Embedded Systems, Second Edition, you'll have a full environment for exploring embedded systems in depth. But even if you work with different hardware and software, the principles covered in this book apply.

Whether you are new to embedded systems or have done embedded work before, you'll benefit from the topics in this book, which include:

So whether you're writing your first embedded program, designing the latest generation of hand-held whatchamacalits, or managing the people who do, this book is for you. Programming Embedded Systems will help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to achieve proficiency with embedded software.

Praise for the first edition:

"This lively and readable book is the perfect introduction for those venturing into embedded systems software development for the first time. It provides in one place all the important topics necessary to orient programmers to the embedded development process.

4 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Embedded Systems Programming........2006-12-17

This book gives an excellent overview of programming embedded systems. It provides numerous examples of real-world hands-on embedded programming. I'd recommend that you have experience in C. Experience with operating systems concepts (such as interrupt service routines) would also be helpful.

Unlike usual programming books, you won't be able to pick up the book, download something, and start working. You'll need to have an embedded system that you can use. The authors use a system from Arcom that will run you about $300. I've not used it and was very wary about it when I first started reading, but as I read through the various examples I gained a great appreciation for the system. It looks like a great way to gain hands-on experience with embedded programming.

Before getting this book I read through the Lego Mindstorm NXT documentation and felt very lost. I didn't understand the symbols on the schematics and they used strange acronyms (like I2C and PWM). I also have an Iguanaworks USB infrared transceiver. I bought it to use in a MythTV system I am building. This book has enabled me to understand the schematics of both the Mindstorm and the transceiver as well as the documentation of both systems. I now feel ready to do my own embedded systems programming.

That said, I did not like everything in this book. They gloss over areas that I felt would have helped me (such as how to use a JTAG adapter and how to create an interrupt service routine under Linux). There are areas where the writing does not flow well and is redundant. The book switched from using an embedded x86 processor in the first edition to using an ARM processor in the second and there are still references to the old processor.

Even with its faults I am glad I got this book. It filled in many of the gaps that I have as a software engineer who is wanting to learn about embedded systems programming. I feel a whole new world has just been opened up to me and I can't wait to jump in.

5 out of 5 stars A classroom and lending collection standard........2006-12-11

Programming Embedded Systems with C and GNU Development Tools appears in its second updated edition to include even more real-world and Linux examples, and is a recommended pick for programmers with a familiarity with C. It's been used as a college textbook and covers everything from basic debugging skills to determining the applications and needs of real-time projects. In updating details and clarifying routines, the 2nd edition of Programming Embedded Systems should be considered both a classroom and lending collection standard.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to developing embedded systems.......2006-11-08

This book is the much needed update to the book on embedded systems also published by O'Reilly. This book assumes that the reader already has some programming experience and is at least familiar with the syntax of the C language. It also helps if you have some familiarity with basic data structures, such as linked lists. The book does not assume that you have a great deal of knowledge about computer hardware, but it does expect that you are willing to learn a little bit about hardware along the way. This is, after all, a part of the job of an embedded programmer.

The book contains 14 chapters and 5 appendixes. The chapters can be divided into two parts. The first part consists of Chapters 1 through 5 and is intended mainly for newcomers to embedded systems. These chapters should be read in their entirety and in the order that they appear. This will bring you up to speed quickly and introduce you to the basics of embedded software development. After completing Chapter 5, you will be ready to develop small pieces of embedded software on your own.

The second part of the book consists of Chapters 6 through 14 and discusses advanced topics that are of interest to inexperienced and experienced embedded programmers alike. These chapters are mostly self-contained and can be read in any order. In addition, Chapters 6 through 12 contain example programs that might be useful to you on a future embedded software project.

Throughout the book, the authors strike a balance between specific examples and general information. Minor details have been eliminated making the book more readable, at least in my opinion. You will gain the most from the book if you view the examples primarily as tools for understanding important concepts. Try not to get bogged down in the details of any one circuit board or chip. If you understand the general C programming concepts, you should be able to apply them to any embedded system you encounter. To focus the book's example code on specific concepts, these examples have been left intentionally incomplete. For example, certain include files and redundant variable declarations are omitted. For complete details about the code, you can refer to the full example source code on the book's web site. I discuss this book further in the context of its table of contents:

Chapter 1, Introduction - Explains the field of embedded programming and lays out the parameters of the book, including the reference hardware used for examples.

Chapter 2, Getting to Know the Hardware - Shows how to explore the documentation for your hardware and represent the components you need to interact with in C.

Chapter 3, Your First Embedded Program - Creates a simple blinking light application that illustrates basic principles of embedded programming.

Chapter 4, Compiling, Linking, and Locating - Goes over the ways that embedded systems differ from conventional computer systems during program building steps, covering such issues as cross-compilers.

Chapter 5, Downloading and Debugging - Introduces the tools you'll need in order to iron out problems in both hardware and software.

Chapter 6, Memory - Describes the different types of memory that developers choose for embedded systems and the issues involved in using each type.

Chapter 7, Peripherals - Introduces the notion of a device driver, along with other coding techniques for working with devices.

Chapter 8, Interrupts - Covers this central area of working with peripherals.

Chapter 9, Putting It All Together - Combines the concepts and code from the previous chapter with convenience functions and a main program, to create a loadable, testable application.

Chapter 10, Operating Systems - Introduces common operating system concepts, including tasks and synchronization mechanisms, along with the reasons for adding a real-time operating system.

Chapter 11, eCos Examples - Shows how to use some features of the eCos real-time operating system.
