Book Description
The story of a remarkable woman's rise out of the foster-care system to attain the American dream—and of the unlikely series of women who lifted her up in marvelous and distinctive ways
Born as a ward of the state of Maine—the child of an unmarried Yankee blueblood mother and an unknown black father—Victoria Rowell beat the odds. Unlike so many other children who fall through the cracks of our overburdened foster-care system, her experience was nothing short of miraculous, thanks to several extraordinary women who stepped forward to love, nurture, guide, teach, and challenge her to become the accomplished actress, philanthropist, and mother that she is today.
Rowell spent her first weeks of life as a boarder infant before being placed with a Caucasian foster family. Although her stay lasted for only two years, at this critical stage Rowell was given a foundation of love by the first of what would be an amazing array of women, each of whom presented herself for different purposes at every dramatic turn of Rowell's life.
In this deeply touching memoir, Rowell pays tribute to her personal champions: the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, teachers, and sisters who each have fascinating stories to tell. Among them are Agatha Armstead, Rowell's longest-term foster mother, a black Bostonian on whose rural Maine farm Rowell's fire to reach for greatness was lit; Esther Brooks, a Paris-trained prima ballerina, Rowell's first mentor at the Cambridge School of Ballet; Rosa Turner, a Boston inner-city fosterer who taught Rowell lessons of independence; Sylvia Silverman, a mother and teacher whose home in a well-kept middle-class suburban neighborhood prepared Rowell for her transition out of foster care and into New York City's wild worlds of ballet and acting and adulthood.
In spite of support from individuals and agencies, Rowell nonetheless carried the burden of loneliness and anxiety, common to most foster children, particularly those "orphans of the living" who are never adopted. Heroically overcoming those obstacles, Rowell also reaches a moment when she can embrace her biological mother, Dorothy, and, most important, accept herself.
Ultimately, The Women Who Raised Me is a story that belongs to each of us as it shines a glowing light on the transformational power of mentoring, love, art, and womanhood.

Moving- Beautifully written in a style of writing that easily induces visual images of people/places/events.......2007-06-25
One of the great things about reading is the delight in imagining what is going on with the main character of the story. You want to feel "right there" with the character. Well this is non-fiction and Miss Rowell through mastery of metaphor and poetic license which sometimes reminds me of the style of Charles Dickens, had me mesmerized from page one in her life story and the histories of those who contributed to being the woman she is today. A real triumph of writing. I am so glad I bought this book.I makes me want to physically explore more of Black/White New England and definitely has inspired me to consider writing my own story and that of my family. I now have a profound respect for foster care and adoption.
Connections.......2007-06-25
Victoria Rowell's wonderful book is about connections: "blood" connections, and connections that transcend blood connections. Her keen knowledge of history places the reader in context to appreciate the "slings and arrows," as well as the nurturing blessings she receives as "a ward of the State of Maine." Thank God that her foster parents, Bertha C. Taylor and Agatha Wooten Armstead, among others, taught her so much about love, so that she was inclined to pass on to her children and to us this glad testimony to human kindness. "Victoria," her name resonates survival.

Book Description
As elected coroners were replaced by medical examiners with scientific training, the American public became fascinated with their work. From the grisly investigations showcased on highly rated television shows like CSI to the bestselling mysteries that revolve around forensic science, medical examiners have never been so visible—or compelling. They, and they alone, solve the riddle of suspicious death and the existential questions that come with it. Why did someone die? Could it have been prevented? Should someone be held accountable? What are the implications of ruling a death a suicide, a homicide, or an accident? Can medical examiners unmask the perfect crime?
Postmortem goes deep inside the world of medical examiners to uncover the intricate web of social, legal, and moral issues in which they operate. Stefan Timmermans spent years in a medical examiner’s office following cases, interviewing examiners, and watching autopsies. While he relates fascinating cases here, he is also more broadly interested in the cultural authority and responsibilities that come with being a medical examiner. How medical examiners speak to the living on behalf of the dead is Timmermans’s subject, revealed here in the day-to-day lives of the examiners themselves.
“Postmortem is a wake-up call to forensic pathology. . . .This book should be viewed as provocative, rather than threatening, and should be a stimulus for important discussions and action by the forensic pathology community.”—Journal of the American Medical Association
Customer Reviews:
Postmortem: How Medical Examiners Explain Suspicious Deaths (Fieldwork, Encounters and Discoveries).......2007-04-08
Not a fun read...qusi scientific with enough detail to satisfy anybody shor of a fourth year med student...lots of details such as what is the difference between a medical Examiner and a Coroner...a walk through of a autopsy of an unkown death and how the ME made critical decision as to how the person died.
The author then goes into spacific areas of interest such as suicide...infant deaths...murder and the organ tissue trade.
A criticism of this book to some might be that the author uses fictious names, places and ME's in telling his stories. Although he explain this in the preface and provides extensive notes and source material this may bother the purists among us, I didn't find it to be a problem.
Superb and fascinating.......2007-03-17
This is a superb book that examines the profession of medical examiners from a sociological perspective. The author spent several years observing the practices and methods of one (anonymous) urban medical examiner's office close-up, standing in at autopsies and conducting many interviews with all levels of staff.
The book looks at several topics in detail: coronary artery disease; shaken baby syndrome in the "Nanny Trial"; suicide; and organ and tissue donation. (I'm probably leaving something out here.)
The introduction is a tad jargony if you are not a sociologist or academic, but very interesting nonetheless. The author explains the difference between medical examiners (physicians) and coroners, who do not need any medical experience, are usually elected, and conduct public inquests. Much of the book looks at differences between various professions and explains why they may be competing with each other for authority and professional recognition. For example, forensic pathologists do not have the same goals as public health officials, as seen in the cases of coronary artery disease and suicide. Pathologists (looking at dead bodies) may come in conflict with clinicians (looking at the live patient), as seen in the case of shaken baby syndrome at criminal trials. The goals of pathologists are often at odds with those of organ and tissue donation advocates; the pathologist may need to do an exceptionally thorough autopsy in the case of a suspicious death or a homicide, while the organ donor advocate may insist that a patient in need of a liver should ethically take priority over the non-existent needs of a dead body.
The endnotes and bibliography are extensive and well worth reading.
A close-up look into just how medical examiners work.......2006-08-06
Postmortem: How Medical Examiners Explain Suspicious Deaths offers what few competitors can: a close-up look into just how medical examiners work. The author spent three years shadowing examiners to understand how they probe questionable deaths, and Postmortem covers not just the physical but the legal, social and moral issues faced by the industry. From issues of objectivity in the face of subjective evidence to influences in headline cases, Postmortem is a title not just for the general public, but especially for the college- level medical collection.

Customer Reviews:
Closing Chapter.......2007-06-11
As Goldberg has stated, The Last Word is his last Diagnosis Murder novel. At least for a while.
As the end of a trilogy, the events in The Dead Letter and The Double Life have culminated to a final showdown between Dr. Mark Sloan and a serial killer that he previously sent to prison. Through a meticulous conspiracy, Dr. Jesse Travis and his wife Susan are framed for infecting patients with the West Nile virus. Even Dr. Amanda Bentley and Mark's son, Detective Steve Sloan, find themselves framed for crimes they didn't commit. And Mark finds himself completely alone and feeling more helpless than he has ever been in his life. If he's to outwit the devious killer, Mark must change his way of thinking.
This last book in the series is much different from the rest. It's more than a simple whodunit. Mark knows who's behind the conspiracy and why. But he must discover who else is involved and gather enough evidence to free his son and friends. Mark's character goes through a lot of changes, especially in his desperation.
Goldberg offers a closing chapter for fans in this exciting story that culminates in a surprising finish.
Diagnosis Murder Book Number 8 .......2007-05-26
The Last Word truly did give Dr. Mark Sloan a chance to have the last word. It is a must read if you are a Diagnosis Murder fan.
Can't go backwards.......2007-05-23
You can read this book without reading the first 7, but you don't want to read the other 7 after this one since so much is revealed in the story. I'd read the first 7 awhile ago, however, so a few of the references were lost on me - it didn't make the book any less interesting or intriguing.
I hope the title is not a signal that no more will be coming in this wonderful series of books.
unbelievable.......2007-05-12
If it wasn't for Dick Van Dyke's photo on the cover, I'd have sworn I was reading bad fan fiction. 'The Last Word' lives up, or should I say down, to its name by completely destroying the lives and careers of the characters. I particularly hate the characters being subjected to the state-sponsored kidnapping also known as wrongful arrest and imprisonment; without the slightest hint of any form of redress at the end. For me this book caused tears and a nightmare. This series could have ended in style with *satisfactory* resolutions; including other, positive reasons for Mark and Steve to decide it was time to quit medicine and solving murders, respectively. And by the way, destroying the characters means that the baddies win after all. What kind of a message is that to send?
Has Mark Met His Match?.......2007-05-01
Many of the murderers Dr. Mark Sloan has put away he has no desire to see again. Topping that list is Carter Sweeney, the man who terrorized Los Angeles with a series of bombings. Yet somehow Mark finds himself meeting with the criminal. Sweeney announces that he's up for an appeal, and he knows he'll get out this time. He's looking forward to meeting Mark for lunch as a free man. The idea repulses Mark, who decides to keep his prison meeting a secret.
Life is busy for Mark and his friends. An unfortunate accident leaves a woman the perfect candidate for organ transplants, and Dr. Jesse Travis oversees the operations. Steve is busy at work with a gun smuggler that he's caught. And the mayor's race is heating up. So why is it Mark can't get his visit with Carter Sweeney out of his mind?
With this book, Lee Goldberg brings his DIAGNOSIS: MURDER books to a close, at least for now. And he's written a fitting finale. It brings back one of his favorite villains from the series and uses him well. There's enough of a recap of the TV episodes that he appeared in, so if he doesn't sound familiar, don't fear. This book also discusses the endings of the previous books in the series, so if you are planning to read them, don't start here.
This book does start very slowly. About a quarter of the way into it, I was getting bored and wondering where it was going. Then things really took off and I was hooked for the rest of the book. And those events from the first quarter? Absolutely essential to what comes next. As always, the series characters are captured perfectly and the new characters are sharp.
Not only does this book close out the book series, but it also serves as a finale for the TV show. Yet it leaves the door open for further adventures. Frankly, I'd love to know what happens to these old friends next.
This is a book for the fans. Anyone looking for closure for these characters should read it. I'm definitely going to miss them. I just hope that something changes and we can get more adventure with these characters at some point in the future.

Book Description
When Dr. Mark Sloan wakes up in his own hospital's I.C.U., he doesn't remember how he got there-or anything from the last two years of his life, including a wife he doesn't recognize, and grandkids he never knew existed.
He learns that he was run down in the street while investigating a series of mysterious deaths, all of whom were patients recently recovered from life-threatening illnesses and accidents. Mark resumes his investigation, only to realize that his "accident" was no accident, and that there is little time left to prevent another murder-his own.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-03-19
The Diagnosis Murder series is one of my fave `light' reads, and I have been with the books since the start. But, I felt that this installment was less enjoyable than the others. Mark is on the trail of a murderer when he is run down in the hospital parking garage; this leads to Mark being in a comatose state. For the first half of the book you believe you're reading about Mark solving a murder, but he's actually only dreaming. It was very disjointed - the dream state versus what was actually happening in the present. The best part was that Steve was able to solve a mystery alone since Mark was in the hospital; Steve and the rest of the gang really came to the forefront and that was nice. Overall, this book lacked the same `voice' of the others and the mystery was not that captivating because the main character of the series wasn't solving the case actively.
Diagnosis Murder #7 The Double Life.......2007-03-08
This is an excellent book! It grabs you at the very beginning and keeps you spellbound throughout the book! I recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries!
Not bad, but a little vanilla.......2007-01-08
Dr. Mark Sloan is hot on the heels of a killer when an attempt on his life lands him in Intensive Care. He wakes up in strange surroundings to find that much of his recent memory has been erased... or has it? His son, a local police detective, picks up on the investigation and learns that nearly a dozen murders are connected to a company that provides home nursing care. In each case, the causes of death had been listed as natural, but there are too many similarities to be coincidental and it appears that the company employs a duo of murdering health care providers who are playing a deadly game of "game over". Meanwhile, Dr. Sloan is haunted by strange dreams that may hold the key to solving the mystery. As the father and son duo get closer to the killers, the action heats up, concluding in the typical edge-of-the-seat manner that characterizes a good murder mystery.
While entertaining at times, I'm afraid this book lacked big-picture appeal. The main character is saddled with amnesia and nightmares, and the dream sequences interspersed throughout the book add a sense of confusion. This is likely the desired effect the author intended, but it could potentially frustrate the casual reader. The father and son competition gives the narrative some added personality, but the mystery itself is a little dry. Most hardcore mystery fans will enjoy this book despite the vanilla-like taste you get from the memory loss and multiple dream sequences, but anyone who doesn't appreciate the genre would be better off staying away.
Not just an excellent continuation -- but an excellent mystery.......2006-12-31
Novelist and TV writer Lee Goldberg turns in another winner with the latest original "Diagnosis Murder" novel, THE DOUBLE LIFE (Signet). From 1993-1999, the popular mystery TV series starred Dick Van Dyke as Dr. Mark Sloane, veteran doctor and amateur sleuth, aided in his investigations by his son, LAPD Lt. Steve Sloan (Barry Van Dyke), and his circle of friends at the hospital.
As one of the architects for the TV show -- Goldberg served as writer and then producer for several seasons -- he is in a unique position to continue the adventures of Dr. Sloan and company. His original novels tread a fine line between keeping up the warm characterizations and engaging mysteries that were a hallmark of the series, all the while expanding and exploring the world of "Diagnosis Murder."
In THE DOUBLE LIFE, Dr. Sloan ends up in his own hospital's ICU after an attempt on his life. When he wakes up, he discovers he can't remember anything from the last two years of his life -- including a wife he doesn't recognize. Struggling to come to terms with his current state, he learns that before the attempt on his life, he was investigating a series of mysterious deaths. Without his memory, Mark has to start his entire investigation from scratch. But as the clues point in two distinctly different directions, Mark and his son find themselves at odds, as the mystery begins to drive them apart. And all the while, Dr. Sloan is still a target for the real killer ...
With his "Diagnosis Murder" novels (as well as his "Monk" novels), Goldberg does an excellent job of building on the characters we know and love. He also displays a knack of creating mysteries within mysteries, much like a puzzle box: no sooner do you have one thing figured out than you discover it's actually hiding something even more sinister. As such, THE DOUBLE LIFE is not just an excellent continuation of the series -- but an excellent mystery novel.
Double Thriller.......2006-11-25
This is the best novel since Death Merchant. When Mark is almost killed until Jessie comes to his rescue. Wakes up to find that he's lost his memory and has a wife. On the top that, The killer is still out there. This novel has a lot of good twists and turns. You have to get this book this is a real page turner.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-02-25
After looking at Diagnosis Murder for many years on television, I wanted to read the first book written under the title, The Silent Partner. I found it to be a very interesting and entertaining. My daughter loves looking at the television shows and reading the first book published. We are looking forward in reading the rest of the books that I ordered. Keep up the good work. Love your books and T.V. shows, Dolly Tatum
An excellent start to the series of DM books.......2005-10-12
I found the beginning of the book quite chilling. Lee goldberg can really set a scene and he does it in a way that gets the reader to 'see' it with own eyes.
Solid entertainment in the DM tradition.......2005-01-21
Lee Goldberg's "The Silent Partner" is the debut novel based on the "Diagnosis Murder" TV series, which Goldberg produced, which means that a) the DM world is accurately drawn, b) Goldberg can put the characters into situations that the show couldn't, and c) there's a potential fan base who would buy the books.
Given all that, Goldberg still has to d) deliver a good story that'll keep the fans coming back, and he does that here. Dr. Mark Sloan's reputation for solving crimes lands him on a cold-case squad, but he learns that its only going to be used as a PR screen. Nevertheless, his curiosity gets him involved in what appears to be a solved murder, only to deduce that it's not.
"The Silent Partner" delivers an interesting story, letting you spend some time with familiar, likeable characters. Sloan and his friends and co-workers come across as idealized, but real characters. While they're all decent people, they get upset, make mistakes, and Dr. Sloan can be a real pain in the tuchus. In one scene, he's trying to prove that a bottle cap found at the scene of several murders is a vital clue, and you can understand the chief of police's point of view: "Uh huh, right, don't you have any house calls, doctor?"
It may be faint praise to call "The Silent Partner" a competent mystery that appears to have been dashed off, but it takes a lot of work and experience to make something look so effortless.
Every bit as entertaining as an episode of the show..........2004-10-02
Lee Goldberg was the perfect choice to write the first in what now appears to be a successful series of whodunnits inspired by the long running television show Diagnosis Murder, which starred Dick Van Dyke as Dr. Mark Sloan. Goldberg served as both writer and producer of the show for several years, so his ear for dialogue and the visual rhythm of the series is spot on. The Silent Partner offers the reader two mysteries, one involving a serial killer (and which provides the book's title), the other a patient death at Community General. Fans of the show will enjoy it and hopefully it will become a mystery section standard, like Murder, She Wrote.
A Good Start to this Book Series.......2004-09-19
This is the first book in the new line of Diagnosis Murder mysteries; it isn't as good as the second and third books are, but gives a great introduction to the series and the characters. If you watched the show it is easy to imagine each of the characters coming to life and to see the workings of Dr. Sloan as he solves yet another case. The humor from the series is here, as is the same light mystery. I read the first three books out of order and was very impressed by the second and third books too. I think this series has potential and hope to read many more.

Book Description
A blackmailer, a dead detective, and a mysterious letter that make an unusual request of Dr. Sloan: avenge a murder.
Customer Reviews:
Doc Sloan searches for a missing, possibly murdered, man.......2006-05-07
Mark Sloan receives an interesting package in the mail. It seems that Sloan's noble streak impressed sleazeball private invesitgator Nick Stryker. Stryker had been blackmailing more than a few people that he had been hired to get dirt on. Although the slimy practice made him rich, it also put his life at risk. If something were to happen to him, then Sloan would get the package. Well, something has happened...but is it murder?
Lee Goldberg has crafted a fun adventure for Sloan to undertake, one that is filled with plenty of in-jokes, both personal (Goldberg has a bit of fun with his real life mishap in a McDonald's parking lot) as well as pop culture. The Shield gets parodied and there is a truly inspired riff on all those suave James Bond movies. The Dead Letter also brings back characters from previous DM books, notably The Death Merchant and The Shooting Script. In less than six books, the Diagnosis Murder spin-offs have matured into an excellent series of entertaining mystery novels. Worthwhile reading for mystery buffs, highly recommended.
If You are Reading This, I'm Dead.......2006-04-14
It's a Monday when Monette Hobbes runs over her husband. Lowell is rushed to Community General Hospital, where he dies despite the efforts of Drs. Mark Sloan and Jesse Travis to save him.
Monette had a decent motive for the murder. Lowell had been having an affair with Monette's daughter from a previous marriage. The strange thing is, the affair had been over for a year, about the time Monette hired PI Nick Stryker to follow her husband.
Nick is no stranger to Mark. The two had reluctantly worked together on a case not that long ago. He's a dishonest PI who would rather blackmail people then present his findings to his clients.
The fact that the affair had been over for a year nags at Mark, and he tries to call Nick. His reward is a box delivered in the mail with a letter asking Mark to use the enclosed blackmail material to solve Nick's murder.
Mark immediately turns the box over to his son Steve, a detective with the LAPD. While Steve begins the process of putting these criminals behind bars, Mark begins to trace Nick's steps in the last few days of his life. What could Nick have done recently to drive someone to kill?
I am addicted to these books. I picked this book up and couldn't stop reading until I had reached the end. The story is engaging with several twists. While I did expect a couple of them, the ending was much more complicated then I expected. The plot moves forward at a steady pace with the initial revelations only leading to more questions until everything begins to fall into place.
As always, Lee Goldberg captures the characters well. These aren't just characters named Mark, Jesse, Steve, Amanda, and Susan, but these are the characters as portrayed by Dick van Dyke and the others on the TV show. Their interactions are right off the screen. Unfortunately, Jesse, Amanda, and Susan don't have much page time in this book, and I really do miss them. Their scenes are memorable, however, with the wonderful teasing and joking I loved from the series. The characters work on their own as well. You don't need to have watched the show to understand their relationships.
There are really only a few new characters that have any significant time, and they are well fleshed out. The others are developed enough for their scene or two, and feel like real people.
These novels are beginning to create their own world apart from the TV show on which they are based. There are several references to events in the previous five books, so it's best to read them in order to avoid being spoiled.
If you haven't yet discovered this fun and inventive series, don't wait another day. Anyone looking for a good read will enjoy these books whether they liked the TV show or not.

Customer Reviews:
Best of the Books.......2006-07-12
Lee Goldberg's "Diagnosis: Murder" book series, based on the Dick Van Dyke TV series, got off to a promising start with "The Silent Partner." The books that followed in the series were entertaining but inferior. Now, Lee Goldberg has redeemed himself of "The Waking Nightmare", the previous entry that was mildly entertaining but mostly mediocre and disappointing, with "The Past Tense", a book that's even better than "The Silent Partner" and even the TV series that inspired it.
"The Past Tense" begins when a young girl is murdered during a rain storm in Los Angeles. Her corpse is then carried by the tide to the beach outside of Dr. Mark Sloan's house dressed in a mermaid costume. Things become really interesting when Dr. Sloan discovers the murder is connected to a series of serial killings he solved in his earliest case as an amateur sleuth.
This leads into the most enthralling stage of the book. Lee Goldberg retells the account of Dr. Sloan's first investigation in first-person from Dr. Sloan's point of view. This account is set forty years before the initial start of the novel. Imagine Dick Van Dyke as he appeared circa "Mary Poppins." Readers are finally allowed a glimpse inside the main character's head. Dr. Sloan describes his early days as both a surgeon and a sleuth, as well as his relationship with his late wife and several old friends that take over the roles of the regular cast members of "Diagnosis: Murder" mysteries. The account fits well in its era, even involving the Red Scare in the plot.
This section makes up the entire middle of the novel and, in Goldberg's tradition of providing two mysteries for one with each novel in the series, works as a self-contained mystery story with plenty of twists-and-turns. The approach also distinguishes "The Past Tense" from all of the previous entries in the series, but the novel doesn't run out of steam when it ends. Dr. Sloan and his son Steve, a baby during the time of the `60's killings, spend the final third of the novel sleuthing the connection between Dr. Sloan's past and the murdered woman in the mermaid costume and attempting to catch another killer. These chapters are taut and suspenseful, and the climax is especially hard-hitting and will have readers on the edge of their seats. Lee Goldberg, a writer who worked on the "Diagnosis: Murder" TV series as well as several others, incorporates the quirky humor of the series into the novel, but, overall, this is the darkest and most suspenseful book in the series so far.
Very enjoyable!.......2006-04-12
This is the first book I've read by Lee Goldberg but it certainly won't be the last.
I thoroughly enjoyed THE PAST TENSE. In fact, I had a very hard time putting it down. When I should have been doing other things, I pushed those things aside until I was finished reading this book.
If you're a fan of the DIAGNOSIS: MURDER tv series, then you should definitely read this book. Even if you're unfamiliar with the series, you should consider reading this book. It has a great story, great characters, and it's very well-written.
This book gave me what I most look for in a book - it entertained me for many hours.
Readers can't ask for much more than that.
Mark Sloan's own past leads to murder........2005-10-10
Still suffering the emotional and physical after effects from the events in the previous entry, The Waking Nightmare, Dr. Mark Sloan takes a morning walk on the beach outside of his Malibu home...and finds a dead body. The mystery takes an immediate turn to the personal when a strange clue links the murder to the very first homicide case Sloan investigated, back in 1962. Sloan himself narrates the 1962 segment of the story, which is a fine little mystery, and the reader comes away knowing more about what makes the crime solving doctor tick than before. Lee Goldberg (who wrote and produced several seasons of the Diagnosis Murder television series) has added an emotional layer to this mystery that makes it the best in the series to date. Highly recommended.
Mark is Haunted by His First Case.......2005-08-26
In the middle of a Southern CA rain storm, Mark Sloan finds a dead college student on the beach near his house. With hair died red and dressed in a mermaid costume, things seem weird. A vile is found inside her that contains pictures from Mark Sloan's very first case.
In February 1962, during another huge rain storm, a dead woman is brought into the ER. Everyone assumes she drowned during the rain storm, but Mark thinks something fishy is going on. When they find evidence of murder, Mark just can't let it go, even when it puts him at odds with the detective, former friend Harry Trumble. Can an inexperienced doctor solve the crime? Even more intriguing, what does this 40+ year old murder case have to do with the present murder?
This book is ingenious. About half of it is set in the past and half set in the present. Really, you get two mysteries for the price of one as we watch Mark solve both cases. Yet they interact in a way I never saw coming. Seeing glimpses of Mark's past was enlightening as well. I really felt like I was back in 1962 for those scenes. Once again, Lee brings events from the series into the book making me wish I'd seen more of the earlier episodes.
These books are fast becoming one of my favorite series around. If you were a fan of the show, you owe it to yourself to pick up this great continuation. Even if you've never seen the series, the plots will pull you in and make you start looking for the reruns. Is the next one out yet?
exciting and complicated mystery.......2005-08-03
In Los Angeles, rain has made the area a flood stricken mud hole and when Dr. Mark Sloan walks along the beach he is shocked to find a dead woman in a mermaid's costume near his home. When he goes to work at Community General Hospital, his friend and medical examiner Dr Amanda Bentley tells him that the victim was injected with a drug to induce paralysis and in her stomach was a memory card.
When they get it developed, it is a picture of a storm that happened in 1962 forty-three years ago in the same month. The killer is sending Mark a message because that storm began the events that led to Mark solving his first homicide. Five student nurses were killed because they were involved in a blackmail scheme headed by a doctor who was also murdered. The woman who was killed turns out to be the daughter of a patient he treated the night it all began in 1962. Mark is determined to find the killer who seems to enjoy taunting him even if it means putting his own life in danger.
Lee Goldberg is a very visual writer so each scene comes alive in the mind of the reader, almost as of this were actually watching an episode of the television show. The author is great at creating characters that are three dimensional and life like and he sets up the who-done-in such a way so that almost anyone could be the killer. Readers will thoroughly enjoy this very exciting and complicated mystery.

A new mystery featuring Dr. Mark Sloan.

Customer Reviews:
The Waking Nightmare.......2007-05-20
In The Waking Nightmare Dr. Mark Sloan, Chief of Internal Medicine at Community General Hospital, is confronted with three mysteries: 1) how does he keep a cancer patient from slowly killing herself; 2) how does he solve the suicidal problems of a young woman who attempted to jump to her own death, and; 3) who murdered a millionaire skydiver in mid-jump with a knife to his chest, and how was it done. The three mysteries take charge of Dr. Sloan's life--he can't sleep (a symptom I was able to relate with), or even live a functional life until he solves each mystery to his satisfaction.
The Waking Nightmare is everything I expect of a tie-in novel. It is familiar--the characters are correct, the setting is perfect and the storyline just right. But instead of a single episode, The Waking Nightmare is more like a Diagnosis Murder mini-series. The story is longer, and the characters are developed and explained much better. Mr. Goldberg also does an admirable job of capturing the always-present humor of the television series, and the comfortable, almost homey, atmosphere. The plotting is wonderful--he twists the plot and sub-plots into an entertaining web that kept me guessing until the final pages.
My only gripe with The Waking Nightmare is that the subplots--at times--overpowered the murder mystery. In fact, when Dr. Sloan solved the mystery of the jumping girl I figured that was it. The book was over, but then in a flash I realized the skydiving murder was not only unsolved, but wasn't much closer to resolution then it had been at the beginning. Although it could be argued, and quite well, that the jumping girl is the main plot thread. It is certainly the most powerful and interesting of the three.
The Waking Nightmare proves, without a doubt, that Diagnosis Murder isn't just for the elderly. But rather Lee Goldberg has written a series of novels that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants a fun, light and pleasant mystery. Mr. Goldberg continues to build a world that is both comfortable and invigorating--it is a mix of new and old in both theme and content, and it is very much a place I would like to return.

Gravetapping: a thing for books
A Highlight .......2005-04-18
He did it again! Mr. Goldberg again topped his earlier Diagnosis Murder books, though I didn't believe this could be possible. The Waking Nightmare fascinated me to the utmost from the first to the last page.
In this book we get to know Dr. Mark Sloan in a way we never saw him before. And I like what I get to see. Mark is a human being!
The story will not allow you to put the book aside. It keeps your attention, even when you are asleep, though you should be prepared not to sleep until you finished the book. Expect the unexpected! You will not be disappointed!
A Good Dream.......2005-04-07
Another satisfying mystery in the Diagnosis Murder series. I have enjoyed them all so far, but this was definitely the weakest mystery of the bunch. There are 3 mysteries going on simultaneously, but the `thread' between them all is easy to identify. The reason this book was lacking, in my opinion, is because 2 of the people Mark was helping this time were actually alive; the books work better with a murder where Mark is actively solving something. Still, it was a light and quick read and parallels the show nicely.
Dr. Sloan faces a waking nightmare.......2005-03-24
Shortly after trying to get a cancer surviving patient to quit smoking Dr. Mark Sloan witnesses a woman attempt suicide by jumping out of her office window. The mysterious woman survives her fall, but she barely makes inside Community General before Sloan is called to the puzzling scene of an apparent murder. It seems somebody stuck a knife into the chest of parachuting adrenalin junkie Winston "Win" Brant, owner/publisher of Thrill Seeker magazine. Although Mark's detective son Steve would like his brilliant father to focus on the Brant case, Doc Sloan cannot stop thinking about the woman's attempted suicide. In fact he becomes so fixated that he cannot even sleep, his mind too busy trying to figure out something he cannot bring himself to understand. What would drive somebody to try and take their own life? Former Diagnosis Murder writer/producer Lee Goldberg has delivered another fun murder mystery. He expertly mixes together two seemingly unrelated mysteries with a touching subplot about Dr. Sloan's stubborn smoker that allow for three satisfying endings. The banter between Sloan, Steve, Jesse and Amanda (DM fans know who they are) is the funniest to date and the characters have really come to life in this new format. Highly recommended.
Not a Nightmare to Read.......2005-03-19
Mark Sloan looks out the window to see a woman jump out of the window across the street. Fortunately, she hit a tree branch on the way down and is still alive, albeit in a coma. Unfortunately, this event is haunting Mark. Every time he tries to sleep, he sees the same events playing out again and again. He must figure out why she jumped so that he can keep her from doing it again and get some sleep.
Meanwhile, Steve has a baffling case of his own and actually calls on his dad for help. Winston Brant, the publisher behind "Thrill Seeker" magazine has just been murdered. By a knife in the chest while parachuting. Obviously, this is a case that will take Mark's incredible powers of deduction.
These two cases flow well together in the book. Both were intriguing, and I found myself constantly trying to read "just a little bit more." As with the others in the series, the characters are spot on. Some of their interaction in the first part was laugh out loud funny, especially for fans of the series. There are a few character arcs taking place in these books, and I'm intrigued to see where they will go. My problem came in the last quarter. It really felt dragged out, like there was one plot twist too many. Maybe that's because I guessed much of those pages early myself.
Like the previous books, this was a fun, fast read. If you're a mystery lover, you'll enjoy it. If you'll a Diagnosis: Murder fan, you'll love it.

Book Description
A dream vacation in Hawaii turns into a nightmare for Dr. Mark Sloan and his son, Steve, when a man they've befriended falls victim to a shark attack. But when Mark discovers evidence indicating the victim was murdered prior to becoming shark food, he and Steve comb the beaches to find a different kind of predator...

Equally as good as the show. Hard to put down!!!!!
Good continuation.......2005-10-12
Again, Lee Goldberg has done the deed. Written a book that you don't want to put down.
Second mystery just as charming, funny, and fun as the first.......2004-10-18
While on a reluctant vacation with his son Steve, Dr. Mark Sloan witnesses a new found friend die in a horrific shark attack. Or so everybody thinks. It turns out that the man was dead before the shark had him for lunch, so why was he murdered? The answer is a surprise, and how Dr. Sloan chases down the murderer makes for a satisfying mystery read. While The Silent Partner read more like a novelization of unused scripts for Diagnosis Murder, The Death Merchant reads like an actual novel. Even those unfamiliar with the show and its characters will enjoy it. Good stuff and highly recommended.
Entertainment on its best.......2004-09-05
I wish I could read the Diagnosis Murder novels once again as if it is the first time. Each novel is unique, has its own style, and is very easy to read, even if the reader hasn't heared about Diagnosis Murder before.
Mr. Goldberg knows perfectly how to facinate the reader, and how to lead him or her on the wrong way. It is really hard to put the novels aside before the end.
For those who know the show from TV, it is as if they are watching another episode.
Lee Goldberg has a loyal readership here in Germany, also in Switzerland and Austria, and we are very much looking forward for the next novels to come.
'The Death Merchant' - one of the most exciting books I ever read.
Just Like the TV Series!.......2004-09-05
This was an extremely enjoyable book/mystery to read. The pace was quick, and the writing was witty and involving. As a fan of the show, I could definitely imagine each of the characters saying their lines in this book. The descriptions of settings (i.e. Hawaii and Colorado) were a bit lacking, but the characters are what drive this story and keep you reading on and on. I found the book extremely reminiscent of the television series itself, and the personalities of the characters were exact - I could completely imagine each of them voicing the dialogue from the book. The mystery itself was well-developed and was just long enough to complete the story without any unnecessary writing. Even for those who never watched the Diagnosis Murder television series, this book will be enjoyable - the writing is lighthearted, yet purposeful, and the characters are interesting and unique. I am definitely interested in reading more from this series and hope it continues for some time. I have already recommended the book to some friends who enjoy lighter problem-solving books.

Book Description
At his neighbor's Malibu beach house, Dr. Mark Sloan discovers the bullet-riddled bodies of an aspiring actress and Rick Kershaw, a Hollywood mega-producer. The police suspect Kershaw's wife. But when Sloan and his son investigate a local mob kingpin's involvement, Mark soon finds himself a prime suspect-while the real murderer is about to kill again.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!!.......2005-09-19
These Diagnosis Murder books are just as good as the TV series. My favorite so far was "The Death Merchant" (#2), but this one deserves 5 stars too. Even though Dr. Sloan was convinced from the beginning who the killer was, the book was full of suspense and even had a surprise ending. Also, the sub-plot turned out to be relevant to a memorable episode of the series. I thought the book did a good portrayal of the world of Hollywood and how it relates to the justice system. I was so sad when the series ended, and I am glad that Dr. Sloan is still solving murders!
No Secret Who Did It.......2004-12-30
This was a light, fun read, as were the past two in this series. The characters are so reminiscent of the TV series it's like watching the show all over again. And, even if you are not familiar with the Diagnosis Murder TV show, you will appreciate the characters. The story is about a double murder that takes place in Hollywood and involves movies stars and, of course, Mark Sloan. The only thing I didn't particularly like about this book was that we know who the murderer is immediately. Instead of trying to figure out whodunit, this is a `how did she do it' mystery. There is no secret as to the murderer, and that kind of left me wishing for more. Still looking forward to many more in this series though - the mystery is lighthearted, and the characters are funny.
Mark Sloan again battles a cagey and dangerous nemesis.......2004-11-08
But this time around, there appear to be TWO of them. While Dr. Sloan is relaxing at his beach front home, trying to paint the seascape view, four gunshots pierce the silence. He rushes to scene of the crime, which happens to be a house or two down the street, and finds a man and a woman evidently shot during a moment of passion. But something is not quite right with the blood spatter and Dr. Sloan begins to investigate, that's when the police arrive and the trouble begins. Making matters worse is the new administrator at Community General. The man seems to have some personal vendetta against Dr. Sloan. Author Lee Goldberg again mixes likable characters with a nifty mystery (more of a howdunnit than a whodunnit this time around) and pulls another entertaining book from the creative oven. Diagnosis Murder fans will no doubt be eager for more, recommended.
Entertainment on its best.......2004-09-05

'The Shooting Script' - I couldn't believe that Mr. Goldberg can top 'The Death Merchant' - but he can!
A Great Book!!!.......2004-09-03
I loved the show and am completely in love with the books. This is a typical set up and great reprise of Dr. Sloan and his cohorts. A must read if you loved the series. A great way to continue to enjoy the series now that the tv show is gone.
