One hundred years of pleasure.......2007-06-13

Like water for chocolate .......2007-06-13
This book is a story is about a young girl that is in love with this young man. When he wants to go ask her hand in marriage Mama Elena says "No." The reason that she says no is because of a stupid tradition. That says that the youngest girl in the De la Garza family can not get married. They have to take care of there mother till she dies.
So when the young man finds out he thinks that the closes why he can get to Tita is by marring her sister. So he does. When Tita finds out she is heart broken. Not only did she just lose the man that she loved; now she had to live seeing him with her sister. What really hurt her most was that she had to make the wedding cake. When she was making some of her tears got into the ingredients and that mad the cake go bad. While her sister was eating it she felt sick and throw-up all over her white dress. Rosaura said that Tita was trying to ruin her wedding night by making her sick.
I really like the way that the author describes everything so good. Like when Tita was making dinner, how she was cutting the chilies, and the sound that the meat made when it touched the hot pan. I also liked the setting that the author had. Some thing that I would change would be the ending. But I had to read it two times to get it. But this is a really good book so you should read it if you like soap-opera romance, and fairy- tale.
magical mystical ride..........2007-05-30
Like Water for Chocolate is a wonderful, magical even mystical ride. A lyrical tale of food, love, romance and heartbreak. Highly recommended.
Laura Esquivel writes a beautiful story that will stay with you for years.
Like Water for Chocolate.......2007-05-27
I've read this book three times and on each occasion I've been as enraptured by the story as I was upon my first reading. Tita is the youngest daughter of Mama Elena, and according to tradition Tita is forbidden from marrying her sweetheart, Pedro, because she is destined to take care of her mother until the day she dies. As a result Tita is relegated to a lonely life, with only her beloved recipes as an outlet for her emotions; and what happens in Tita's kitchen is magical. For instance, when Mama Elena decides to marry Pedro to Tita's older sister, Tita is ordered to make the couple's wedding cake as punishment for daring to hope for love. Tita obeys, but can't stop herself from weeping as she makes the icing, working her tears into the meringue. As a result, when the cake is served to the wedding guests each person is suddenly overcome with an intense longing, for all the loves they've lost in their lives, for all the opportunities missed and sacrifices made. Mama Elena is convinced that Tita has vengefully poisoned the cake, but in reality Tita's emotions have inadvertently become tied to the dishes she creates in her kitchen. "Like Water for Chocolate" is filled with uncanny scenes and succulent recipes, all of which are narrated in the deft, enchanting voice of Tita's great-niece, who learned of her aunt's recipes by discovering her handwritten cookbook. Lively, entertaining and enchanting, if you haven't read this book - you must!
Like Water for Chocolate Review.......2007-04-27
I had to read this book for a school project and I had no clue what it was about. At first I didn't really want to read it, but as I delved into the book, I really started to like it. Laura Esquivel really captures the reader's attention and got the reader to feel each character's emotions. She uniquely tied in recipes to the plot of the story since the book centered around the kitchen. This is really an intriguing book, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Still a wonderful read.......2007-01-04
I'd first read `Like Water for Chocolate' about 10 years ago and had found it simply amazing. Then again, it had been the my first contact with a book so unique ... the first novel to talk about the "magical" power of food, a combination which is now much more common thanks to writers and books like Joanne Harris' wonderful `Chocolat', Lily Prior's `La Cucina', Anthony Capella's `Food of Love', and Isabel Allende's `Aphrodite' and many others. In fact many of my favourite books fall into what has now become a genre in its own right.
`Like Water for Chocolate' may have lost some of it's uniqueness over the years but much of its magic and power is still there - even for a reader that's become much more jaded over the years. Well worth a read.

Book Description
Buenas noches, Luna
Customer Reviews:
Great classic book, even better in Spanish.......2007-04-25
I think I love this book even more than my kids, & this is their favorite.
The simple rhyming lines are even more beautiful in Spanish. My kids can repeat the entire book... And who doesn't love Margaret Wise Brown?
Great Spanish reinforcement.......2007-03-23
I've read Goodnight moon to my now 5 month-old baby every night since he was less than two months old. Since most of the books I have are in English and I want to raise my child bilingual, I decided to get our nightly routine book in Spanish for more reinforcement. It is great, he recognizes the book that we read in English, and I can read him in my native language helping him become a bilingual child.
Sweet book..........2007-01-19
I love this book in Spanish as much as I do in English. It doesn't lose any of it's rythme in the translation.
Clásico.......2007-01-19
Classic in Spanish. Most children own the English version, so the Spanish version will be familiar. I like that it is not bilingual, and the translation is very well done. Flowing "buenas noches, luna... buenas noches, habitación..." makes it easy for children to learn vocabulary. My kids love to find el ratoncito (little mouse) on each page and la luna. I am a fluent Spanish speaker, mother and teacher. I use this book as one of my staples in class for preschoolers from baby to age 5.
Great Book.......2007-01-02
This is a great book and I got the spanish version for my grandson because his father is of mexican decent and we want him to learn Spanish in addition to English at an early age. I also got the English version so he can hear it in both languages. Wonderful story.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02
Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.
pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16
Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to his arrival in Bombay he escaped from an Australian prison where he had begun serving a 19-year sentence. He served two years and leaped over the wall. He was imprisoned for a string of armed robberies peformed to support his heroin addiction, which started when his marriage fell apart and he lost custody of his daughter. All of that is enough for several lifetimes, but for Greg Roberts, that's only the beginning.
He arrives in Bombay with little money, an assumed name, false papers, an untellable past, and no plans for the future. Fortunately, he meets Prabaker right away, a sweet, smiling man who is a street guide. He takes to Lin immediately, eventually introducing him to his home village, where they end up living for six months. When they return to Bombay, they take up residence in a sprawling illegal slum of 25,000 people and Linbaba becomes the resident "doctor." With a prison knowledge of first aid and whatever medicines he can cadge from doing trades with the local Mafia, he sets up a practice and is regarded as heaven-sent by these poor people who have nothing but illness, rat bites, dysentery, and anemia. He also meets Karla, an enigmatic Swiss-American woman, with whom he falls in love. Theirs is a complicated relationship, and Karla's connections are murky from the outset.
Roberts is not reluctant to wax poetic; in fact, some of his prose is downright embarrassing. Throughought the novel, however, all 944 pages of it, every single sentence rings true. He is a tough guy with a tender heart, one capable of what is judged criminal behavior, but a basically decent, intelligent man who would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially anyone he knew. He is a magnet for trouble, a soldier of fortune, a picaresque hero: the rascal who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. His story is irresistible. Stay tuned for the prequel and the sequel. --Valerie Ryan
Product Description
This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay, a hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, actors and exiles. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher, and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets. Based on the life of the author, this extraordinary debut has the world of human experience in its reach.

This is the book you've been looking forward to reading!.......2007-06-23
I am lucky to find 1 book a year that I enjoy this much. Sometimes I have to buy 2-3 books (that I never read) to find a book I enjoy. Shantaram is a gift to readers. I agree with the other Amazon reviews but wish to add: I think the appeal is primarily as a "guys" book, but as a man, I cannot be completely objective, so ladies, if you wish, give it a try. (although I dont think you'll find it on Oprah's reding list.) Guys, if you have ever dreamt of being a tough, but caring fugitive, living on the edge of the dark side, but living with principals, then you can safely buy it, read it, and let it take you on a 10 year adventure of a lifetime!
Read this book! It's wonderful.......2007-06-15
The first time that I came across Shantaram in a bookstore I was put off by its length. It is over 900 pages long and it is heavy. However I had heard good things about it and decided to give it a go. I am so glad that I did, because this is one of the best books that I have ever read. Even though it's long, it is gripping and easy to read. It was one of those books that you carry round with you so that you can read a page here and a page there and you never want to put it down.
The story is based on the real life adventures of the author, Gregory David Roberts. As the book begins, he has escaped from prison in Australia and made his way to India. Later on we find out more about how he broke out from prison but it's testament to how enthralling the story is that this is not the most eventful part of the book. When he arrives in Mumbai (Bombay) he quickly immerses himself into the city, befriending the locals, learning the languages and even living in a slum. He also befriends a local mafioso and is drawn into the Indian crime world. The story twists and turns and would be unbelievable if it wasn't based so much on fact. Gun runners in Afghanistan, high class prostitutes, Bollywood movie sets and grim Indian prisons all make their appearances. It's a fascinating, suspenseful and exciting book.
Roberts has a gift for writing. He really captures the flavour of India - the smells, the sounds, the colors. After reading this book I felt like jumping on a plane to Mumbai and heading straight to Leopold's for a drink. Instead I settled for recommending it to all my friends, and despite the very different genres that they usually read, they have all loved it also. It's that kind of book. Don't miss it.
Could it be? A 900+ page-turner? Yes! A thousand times, yes!.......2007-06-04
Yes, I know. You picked the book up, felt the heft of it, and then put it back, didn't you? Shame on you. You missed a wonderful, engaging tale of a fugitive on the run in India. The story is based on many incidents from the author's own life. He wrote a lot of the book while still in prison. I, too, was one of the ones who put the book down--the first time. Then, having learned that Johnny Depp will play the lead in the movie (already in production), I wanted to read it. I'm very, very glad I didn't miss this one. You will be hooked from the first page, and you will hate to see it end. You will laugh aloud, and you will cry, and if you don't already, you will learn to love the sights, the sounds, the colors, the music, and yes, the smells that are India. Don't miss this book. It will be a long time before another one comes along as good.
An all-time favorite!.......2007-05-28
I came to Shantaram through the recommendation of a friend after I expressed joy from reading Suketu Mehta's Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found - a thrilling non-fiction account of modern Bombay's underworld.
Shantaram didn't disappoint. Since it's a 900+ pager, I was engaged with it for several weeks. It so deeply absorbed me I began to feel pangs of sorrow as I approached its end. The universe this book creates was one of only a handful that this voracious reader was terribly saddened to leave at the book's conclusion.
The book covers so many issues in loving detail: Bombay, Asia, the expatriate experience, poverty, crime, heroin addiction, love, betrayal, redemption. I'd love to see Shantaram nominated as a "classic" and read by high school and college students instead of non-starters like Wuthering Heights and The Scarlet Letter. Love learned and lost amongst poverty, crime and deception is love, nevertheless.
I can't wait until the Mira Nair/Johnny Depp film version of the book is released in 2008(?)!
The Best Book I've Ever Read, Bar None!.......2007-05-22
If you haven't heard about this book, you need to get it and read it. Of course the scoop right now is that Johnny Depp has purchased the rights to the book and along with Mira Nair, is going to star as the leading character, with production starting later this year.
Gregory Roberts is a consummate story teller and not only is there great action but this is a wonderful love story. The love of India and the love of a special woman go hand in hand in this tale. I was hooked from the first paragraph. It's a long book, 911 pages, but they fly by.
Having been to India via the same airport and the having experienced the same smells and physical sensations Gregory describes really sucked me in. Check out his website for lessons on writing your own stories. Also check out Shantaram-themovie.com for information on the film.

complicated read.......2006-09-01
i purchased go dog go for my son and he loved the spanish version. so i decided to go with green eggs(since i have read it over 50 times)and it was not as easy to follow and the words were a little difficult to relate. i can speak a little spanish and read a little but this book left me struggling.
Great bedtime reading for kids ! ! ! .......2006-02-27
I bought it for my three year old son, and I can't express how much joy my little one has every night when he goes to bed, he immediately runs to bed and literally ask my wife or me to start reading. I highly recommend it for all the little ones!! ! !, you won't regret it.
It rhymes! Great vocabulary stretcher!.......2006-01-05
Many translated classics don't have the original flow of the English title. This one does! I read it to my Spanish classes about once a month and have begun leaving out words - because of the repetition, they are all (ages 3 to 18) grabbing more vocabulary, and laugh as they listen.
The students enjoy reading Huevos verdes in groups and I've even used the sentences to teach grammar rules in different contexts. For the youngest students, we add this to Flip Flop Spanish lessons, and they enjoy "reading" the pages but changing verde to other colors, or the animals. What a great teaching resource that continues to make learning a second language fun!
¡Me gusta mucho este libro!.......2003-11-30
After I had read this book to my nieces and nephews, my nine-year-old nephew picked up "Corre, perro, corre" by P.D. Eastman and read it all the way through in English, including "me gusta," which he had not heard prior to hearing this book. Reading is a great language teacher!
I asked the kids why the main character's name is Juan Ramón instead of Sam, and my nephew said immediately, "Well, it has to rhyme with jamón, of course."
I had purchased this book for my students, but it was obvious I was going to have to get another for my nieces and nephews! At least I have no problem knowing what to get them for birthdays and Christmas gifts! (They certainly don't need any more toys!)
You will hear it all day long!.......2002-08-31
I love this funny and musical version of the english favourite. My son loves it and can even finish the rhymes by now. Even my husband who does not speak spanish (yet!) loves repeating the simple sentences that make this book so much fun. A must in our family bed every morning, a great way to start the day!

Book Description
Launched simultaneously in Spain and the Americas, this work aims to divulge the great novel of Spanish Literature by means of a high quality, well-taken care of edition at a very reduced price. The book contains a prologue by Mario Vargas Llosa, an introductory text and complementary analysis by other academics, along with an extensive glossary of terms that will help readers get to know Cervantes' language. This beautiful hardbound edition is 5 x 8 inches, 1360 pages of fine biblical Italian paper, and will be sewn at the spine with fine vegetable thread. This work constitutes, without a doubt, the most complete, serious, high quality commemorative edition.
Having an immediate success when first published 400 years ago, and with its experimental form and literary playfulness, Don Quixote has been recognized as the world's first modern novel. Don Quixote tells the story of a middle-aged Spanish gentleman who, obsessed with the chivalrous ideals found in romantic books, decides to take up his lance and sword to defend the helpless, destroy the wicked, and win the heart of his beloved Dulcinea. Seated upon his ever so lean horse, and accompanied by the pragmatic and faithful squire Sancho Panza, Don Quixote rides the roads of Spain seeking glory and grand adventure. Along the way the duo meet a dazzling assortment of characters whose diverse beliefs and perspectives reveal how reality and imagination are frequently indistinguishable.

An Antti Keisala Comment: Introspective Quijote........2007-02-19
I haven't yet gained the courage to give any special comment to any of the Shakespeares. But I'm now going to embark on the second hardest path: to say anything meaningful of Cervantes.
Cervantes is the creator of much, and if I tell you that I believe he has, alongisde to the Bible and Shakespeare, created the Western consciousness (here confess being heavily influenced by Bloom) I think you might get an idea of how much I respect the man and his work. And then I'm interested in something I call narrative introspection, which is basically a personal transmogrification of other theories of self-consciousness and self-reference in storytelling. If nothing else, I'm going to shed some light on this subject.
It feels daunting to write anything about Don Quijote, because like Hamlet, he seems to have usurped our culture in such a way that they're simply larger than the limits we know. They've been shaping our literary culture in such a profound way it's almost impossible to either approach them or given any new insight into them. That is, this comment doesn't pretend to be important in any way. And because in every instance I make clear that Bloom is an important influence in my ways of reading, I'll paraphrase him as he talks about the paradigm of how poets can't be Adams in the early morning; that there've been too many Adams that have already named everything. We simply approach wisdom and wit greater than ours, whatever we do. This is, in fact, a nicely and healthily humble way of approach Cervantes. He is one of the few Adams I can tell who have been naming everything for us.
The Introspective Narrative. So let's begin by talking about the introspective narrative. This is a term that simply refers to the self-conscious nature of narrative. If you know your Quijote, you already know exactly the things I refer to. Tristram Shandy is like this. Bulgakov, Joyce, Proust, Borges, Saramago, all of them and many more. This happens when a book is openly a book, and many times a book about books. Quijote is to me the epitome of this approach to literature, as in here the whole structure is astonishingly complicated. So complicated, in fact, that not many modern books can match this.
First, we have a book that Cervantes, the narrator, claims to have in his possession. This book is arguably written in Arabic, of which the humble narrator merely makes a translation. An interesting detail is that in Islamic countries any translation of the Qu'ran is treated only as an interpretation. If we select an approach like this it already adds another layer to the story: that what we get is not only a translation, it's an interpretation of the original. Then we have the story itself, that of an elderly man living in the villa of La Mancha, interested in romances of chivalry. What happens is like from a dream come true: the reality of this elderly man mixes with the reality (or should we say 'fiction') of the romances in a way that creates a character called Don Quijote (I rather use this spelling over Quixote) who starts to live this chivarly fiction. What happens is something unique in works that were to come: a shift of reality, where we can view both realities, occurs not mechanically but organically through the most genius device: Quijote starts to enchant Sancho Panza, who starts believing his master's fiction. Sancho is the centre of all the different kind of shifts, as there are some obvious things he recongizes as fiction, yet some he believes. And then there are stories told throughout and some of these mesh with the 'reality' we're attached to, that of Quijote/Pancha.
The latter volume takes this further. If you don't already know, there was an imitation-Cervantes publishing an alleged second part to Don Quijote. Cervantes himself addresses this in the preface, but takes it further by inserting that book into the reality of Don Quijote: Quijote, who of course is a 'fictional' character in his own world, finds out that there is a book of a hidalgo named Don Quijote that has been published and getting some widespread attention. Characters move from layer to layer, and characters that are fictional to our Sancho and company suddenly emerge in the same layer as do our heroes.
It shouldn't be that surprising that such introspection is natural and extremely organically handled in Spanish-language (or Portuguese) literature, and now cinema. Borges, an Argentine, is a literary giant who dedicated much of writings to ideas like this; Saramago, perhaps the greatest living writer alongside Harold Pinter, does the same yet with a synthesis that's highly unpredictable and shrouded into the wafflings of the narrator, as in "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ" and "Stone Raft". Gabriel García Marquez helped to create a re-emerging literary genre with his magical realism, a sort of an anti-thesis to the `artificial', that is, provocative self-reference of the works like Tristram Shandy. In cinema Julio Medem and others (Almodóvar, Cuarón, Iñárritu) are rewriting the ways in which you show narrative visually.
The Style of Cervantes: Irony & Self-Reference. The gamut of Cervantes' ironic flare is distinguishably excessive, erratic in a sophisticated way that's comparable to only that of Shakespeare or Chaucer. This is the funniest book, especially if you're into the whole self-reference thing. There is constant punning and sublime irony. Only Bulgakov is as radically and deliciously grotesque with his irony, making him the decendant of Cervantes, just as Douglas Adams could be the descendant of Lewis Carroll. The second part is more unified, but it lacks the fervent humour. But there the irony becomes organically a part of the shifting layers, and this is the birth of a kind of layered irony, where the layers themselves comment on each in an ironic way.
I haven't read Cervantes in English so I can't comment on the translation. I know it in the original Spanish and Finnish, my native language, in which we have an excellently ironic translation available. Yet if you're looking for an edition in the original Spanish, this is worthy; this is the 400th anniversary Real Academia edition I'm talking about. It has editorial insight, yet what it preserves is the beauty of Cervantes' language. Modern Spanish meanings of difficult words to comprehend are given in annotation. I've been reading this with the Finnish translation, then by itself, and it's a profound experience. And I'm really not the right person to brag about his Spanish. But this is a great edition to strengthen both your Spanish and read the great genius in his own, familiar language.
The edition itself is a hefty book, almost 1,400 pages. The paper's thin, yet the text remains readable. Of all the introducing writings, Mario Vargas Llosa's "Una novela para el siglo XXI' is the most vividly written. Also included are Francisco Ayala's "La Invención del `Quijote'" and Martín de Riquer's "Cervantes y el `Quijote'". Notes on the text are provided in summary by Francisco Rico. A glossary of words is also provided in the end of the book. Very useful, very well thought out.
A treasure of a book.
A Great, Grand, Wonderful Book.......2007-02-13
A middle-aged Spanish gentleman with too much time on his hands devotes himself to romantic novels of knighthood and chivalry. As he loses himself in this literature his mind begins to snap. He decides to become a latter-day knight-errant, a man who rides through the world in an old suit of armor, righting wrongs and protecting the helpless, just like the heroes of his books. His journey through the countryside leads to one disaster after another, one catastrophic misunderstanding after another. Funny--yes, but also touching and moving.
Later Don Quijote is joined by his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, who is supposedly of sound mind--at least sounder than his master--a simple, earthy man given to spewing cliches and trying to correct his master's misconceptions. Sancho also has his fantasy--that he will be rewarded with an island to rule, and riches.
Of course you know what happens--or, do you? The book is packed with diversions, digressions, conversations, poems. pastoral entertainments, dramas of unrequited love, and the growing fame of the characters even as they ride--so that by the end of Part II they are running into people who have read part I. The book is written simply, in conversational style, but packed and layered with meaning.
I think a person should be over fifty to really appreciate Don Quijote, but if you can't wait, well, I won't stop you. You'll just have to read it again later. It's the greatest story of a midlife crisis ever written, but it's also much, much more. A story about mankind and its vanities and its willingness to pursue fantasy and its need for freedom. Don Quijote and Sancho seem to fail at every turn, yet in fact, they have changed the world. And are changing it still. Somewhere, somewhere they're riding still. I recommend this one with total enthusiasm. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
Hilarious!.......2007-01-06
If you liked Don Quixote in English, you will LOVE it in Spanish.
Nothing like reading something in its original language. The only problem you could have is not understanding some of the words, and tenses because of the "Old Spanish" but don't worry, this book has footnotes for that.
Nothing gets lost in time.
Buy it, and read it. This version is great!
Perfect.......2006-04-30
You'll have no problem getting through all two pounds of this classic. The sophistication of Cervantes' tale is such that the humor in it is universal, stretching across centuries, languages, and cultures. In addition to humorous, however, it possesses elements of danger, joy, sadness, and any other quality that belongs in a timeless epic. The Spanish is antiquated but somehow easy to read regardless.
Don Quijote.......2006-04-20
If you want anything in English to help you, this is not for you, BUT,if you have some Spanish (in my case 1 college year) this is a great way to tackle Don Quijote. There are many footnotes explaining words whose meanings have changed and some obscure references. The physical quality of the book--paper, print, and binding--is remarkable for the price.

Book Description
Incluso a mí."
Heron Ryan, periodista:
"Las personas crean una realidad y después se vuelven víctimas de ella. Athena se reveló contra eso y pagó un precio alto."

"Beauty".......2007-05-07
Paulo Coelho is my favorite author, his passion, realism, and humanity are present in every chapter of his books. The edition I bought did not have the pages evenly cut, but the power, passion of his words gave also beauty to the imperfect pages.

Customer Reviews:
disappointing .......2007-05-11
I bought this online guided by the good reviews, but the book proved dissapointing. Though pictures are very good, the story of a boy that gets sent to bed for bad behavior and travels to an island where mosters live, and where he reigns as his king, has absolutely no soul nor magic. Story starts with the boy mother calling the boy "a monster". I know raising a boy is challenging, but I felt uneasy about that language from a mother to his son. In short, the very short story seems focused on the boy getting away with everything he does: no moral, no tenderness, no warmth. AND my kids found the pictures alluring but the book boring. I bought three books, read all of them to the kids and asked them to choose their favourites to keep, and this one was last.
I enjoyed this book all over again!.......2007-01-06
Where the Wild Things Are was one of my very favorite books as a child. My nieces and nephew live in Mexico, so I bought this book for them. I cannot remember how many times I read it sitting on the couch with them in my lap. They loved it and I loved it. Very well translated and as always a joy to read.
Highly recommended!
Another good Spanish language book.......2007-01-05
There are so few of these, especially from an English original. Buy it for your kids to learn more Spanish.
EXCELENT!.......2006-03-14
I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old girl, both loved it.
A Story for the Ages.......2004-09-13
My two sons absolutely loved this book. They liked the idea of going "where the wild things are" and the book inspired a lot of play in our house. The book nicely balances the child's need for imaginative thinking with a sense of limits, and the pleasures of home. The illustrations clearly make this book great, because they provide a launch pad for this imaginary place. This is one of a handful of books that will bond you with your child for the rest of your lives. Don't miss that opportunity!
Unlike some children's books which are a little boring for the adults to read after the 350th time, I always enjoyed this one because I could think new thoughts each time I read it.
I think this is one of the best five books for children.

Customer Reviews:
Great for enjoyment and for the classroom.......2007-04-11
I've read all the Harry Potter books in English, and I've always wanted to read them in Spanish, since I teach Spanish. I am currently teaching lower-level Spanish classes, one of which is the highest level of the lower levels. We are reading "La piedra filosofal" as a class, and, although my students are at different levels, the benefit to reading it is that they all know the story in English, and that helps their comprehension tremendously. Some students are moving slower than others, but they're really enjoying reading something that "real Spanish people" (their words) read. Definitely a good choice for intermediate level Spanish students as an introduction to advanced reading and literature.
Great Way to Brush Up on Spanish.......2007-01-03
I studied Spanish and college many (I mean many) years ago and have been trying to relearn the language. I remember the basic grammar but my vocabulary is pretty weak. I decide to read Spanish books geared for young adults and found the entire Harry Potter series (I made it through the first 4 so far) to be truly enjoyable reading.
Of the four I read, this and the second (Chamber of Secrets), were the lightest and the easiest reading. The third (Prisoner of Askaban)and especially the fourth (Goblet of Fire)increased in length and my speed in Spanish is pretty slow, so they took longer to read. The fifth (Order of the Phoenix) and six (Half Blooded Prince) are about 900 pages so I am pretty intimidated to tackle them in Spanish. I will read them in English and move on to some other Spanish books.
After reading these I viewed the DVD's of the films. They have the audio track in Spanish so you can train your ear, too.
The books follow the English versions almost exactly, so you can have a copy of it around to refer to if you find yourself confused about a certain phrase or sentence.
Poor translation of a great book.......2006-01-09
It's a shame that such a wonderful book was translated so poorly. The translator, Alicia Dellepiane, has a tendency to translate literally. For example, she translated to "have a fit" (referring to the baby, Dudley, on the second page of the book), as "tenía un berrinche." In Mexico it's "hacía un berrinche" and in much of Latin America it's "daba un berrinche." Errors such as this one abound. It's awkward for readers who know Spanish well and misleading for those who might pick up this book to study Spanish.
I rate the English version as five star.
Exelente libro - Pesima traduccion.......2005-04-12
