Book Description

This moving memoir of an African-American woman's lifelong fight to identify and overcome depression offers an inspirational story of healing and emergence. Wrapped within Danquah's engaging account of this universal affliction is rare and insightful testimony about what it means to be black, female, and battling depression in a society that often idealizes black women as strong, nurturing caregivers. A startlingly honest, elegantly rendered depiction of depression, Willow Weep for Me calls out to all women who suffer in silence with a life-affirming message of recovery. Meri Danquah rises from the pages, a true survivor, departing a world of darkness and reclaiming her life.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any Black woman coping with depression!.......2006-01-22

As a 20-something Black woman who has suffered from depression since adolescence, I found this book to be completely validating. The author pens a story that so many of us wish we could. In our community, issues of mental health tend to be taboo. So those who suffer, often do in silence. However, Ms. Danquah writes with such a bold honesty that I for one was inspired to face my struggle with this illness head on! This book will definitely move you as well!

4 out of 5 stars This was a great read.......2004-12-19

After experiencing several bouts with depression throughout my 30s--I am now 38 and the daily battle continues, this book caught my attention from another message board. I checked it out from my local library and finished it within 2 days. I could so relate to the author. Her story was very poignant and I appreciated her honesty. While medication has not worked for me I am trying a daily balance of selfcare to work with my depression. This is a book I will buy. Continued success to the author, her family and circle of friends.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-05-01

I bought this book and didn't want to read it at first. I thought it would be too sad. But I read it anyway. I am sure glad I did. This book gave me the courage I needed to go find help for my own depression. Thanks Meri.

5 out of 5 stars Just Saved My Marriage.......2004-02-06

Reading the excerpts of this book on your web site got me thinking deeply about my wife, who is presently looking for a place of her own. I just sent her the url to the excerpts and hope she will read it and change her mind and stay. Thanks for saving my marriage!

4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2003-04-24

I read this book after going through a bad break-up with my fiance. It's wonderful to read about a black woman being totally honest about her emotions, her illness and her reality. I appreciated Meri telling her story without wearing the "Superwoman" mask mainstream America forces on black women. This was an eye-opening book and it helped me to realize that I don't have to wear the superwoman mask. It inspired me to be brave enough to be honest about my own emotions and vulnerabilities! Black women and men should read this book, and everybody else should too! Dispel the myths!

Book Description

The death of a beloved companion animal can cause as much grief as the death of a human being, and it may be more difficult to bear if others fail to appreciate how acute the pain of loss can be. This poem provides the comfort that helps to bring acceptance of a pet’s death. The book includes addresses of societies that offer grief counseling to those who have lost a companion animal.

5 out of 5 stars Directly to the Heart.......2007-03-12

It is a beautiful, beautiful poem that she's written and published in this book. It's heartbreaking and consoling at the same time. Having just lost one of my Babies, one of my little children, it was very moving. I highly, highly recommend it for anyone who has been so unfortunate as to have lost one of their "little children" too.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent expression of grief........2005-07-28

My late wife left behind dozens of books on or about cats, this was one of them. While it is aimed at helping those who grieve the loss of a beloved animal companion, reading it was almost like hearing her voice whispering in my ear about how to best deal with her death. A loving gift for those that are suffering the loss of a pet. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars a tiny, pocket-sized "poem" book.......2003-02-21

There are only about 30 pages in this tiny book. It's approximately 4.5 x 6" and hardcover. Every two-page fold has a black and white picture ("sugar lift etching") of a cat, and a few words of the poem that fills it. The title of the book is the beginning words of the poem. It is from a cat's point of view.

Only get this book if you want to offer your sympathy to a cat person, or if you feel like being weepy over your own cat's loss. It seemed a bit maudlin to me, but it's very well done, commercially.

In the back there are "pet loss helplines" to call for the US or Britain. This is a Souvenir Press book, printed in Italy.

It seems a little overpriced to me, because it's so small.

    Book Description

When her neighbor handed her the stack of yellowed letters that had been rescued from an Atlanta, Georgia, pile of trash, author Elizabeth Whitley Roberson had no idea she was about to embark on a fact finding mission through six states, from Civil War battlegrounds in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia to Gwinnett County in North Georgia. The author of these letters was a young man named Eli Pinson Landers, a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. "Weep Not For Me, Dear Mother" is a collection of the letters this brave young man diligently wrote to his mother, Susan Landers, back in their home of Yellow River, Georgia. The book traces his life in battles at Gettysburg, Manassas, and Chickamauga, among others.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2002-11-30

There are better stories out there about front line soldiers during the War Between the States. I bought this one simply because I am originally from Gwinnett County, Georgia and was interested in what I might learn. Landers' story is interesting but the way it was presented in this book was lacking something in my opinion. Maybe the author did the best she could, but I was somewhat disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Literally Saved From the Trashbin.......2002-04-14

Driving down an alley a stack of letters was spotted tied up with ribbons and sitting on the trashcan awaiting what would have been a tragic fate. Those letters were retrieved, discovered to be the correspondence of a Gwinnet Co. Georgia teenager to his mother during the War Between the States. Here they have been reprinted with all the unvarnished charm of a 19th century American soldier caught up in an epic struggle. To put an exclaimation point on this unlikely story a photo was later discovered which proved to be our young hero. Alternatively playful, funny, melancholy and patriotic the collection suddenly ends. Like 620,000 others he never returned. While in print for sometime this one has yet to really be discovered. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars For spiritual seakers and lovers of God.......2000-11-26

This book was great, I got the chance to read it last year when my aunt brought it over. It is about African-american life in the south of the early U.S. It's also about their strength in God and faith they put into Him. It tells of what they had to go through, the pain and suffering and how the only reason they got by was because of their faith. The illustration by my cousin was also wonderful!!!
