Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02
Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.
pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16
Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Book Description
To a degree both engrossing and alarming, the story of fast food is the story of postwar America. Though created by a handful of mavericks, the fast food industry has triggered the homogenization of our society. Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled the juggernaut of American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning.
Each day, one-quarter of the adults in the United States visit fast food restaurants, spending more than $110 billion dollars in the year 2000. Schlosser examines the franchise arrangement, with its curious blend of protection, paternalism and profit as adeptly as he delves into the specifics of what's in the beef. Also on Schlosser's hit list: the susceptibility of meat to dangerous pathogens such as e. coli; the slaughter of nearly 600 cows per hour (this American packinghouse standard, he reveals, is nearly 6 times the rate of European slaughterhouses); an in-depth look into serious nutritional, environmental, and cultural questions. Fast Food Nation is a groundbreaking work of investigation and cultural history that has changed the way America thinks about the way it eats.
"Fast Food Nation" the movie is slated to be released by Fox Searchlight on November 17, 2006. Starring Ethan Hawke, Avril Lavigne, Patricia Arquette, and Greg Kinnear.
Customer Reviews:
First half blah, second half must read.......2007-06-23
After years of hearing about it from my mother I'm finally read this books. I'm glad I did but it wasn't perfect. The second half about the common practices of meat produces both in and out of the slaughterhouses was good and something everyone should read. The first half however I had a hard time getting through. I didn't find the part on the beginning/growth interesting, nor did I enjoy the discussion of the sociological and economic effects of the fast food industry. He just spend way too long whining about how big companies are killing off the "American farmer" relying almost entirely on the 'this is how it used to be so it's best' argument. The book breaks down into two parts; skip the first half but the second is a must read for everyone.
ways of eating.......2007-03-26
I know kids that buy Taco Bell for lunch religiously at school, or domino's pizza; I was never fortunate enough to spend a $4 on lunch everday and came with packed carrots and a turkey sandwich. After reading Fast Food Nation I am so thankful that I am even limited to eating fast food on a rare weekend.I agree that it is very convenient for fast paced lives but Schlosser has released what people sacrifice for their bodies for their own convenience. I look back in disgust at the Hot Lunches I begged my parents for in school; us kids would complain that the fried chicken was sometimes purple or awkwardly brown; and now because of Schlosser's book I relize that its just not apparent in a bad kitchen staff. Fast Food Nation provides the trueth about what we put into our bodies and honestly is trying to help America not be the number one country with people with weight issues and Burger King, McDonalds or Taco Bell within every neighborhood. In addition, I've always loved $.89 tacos or buritto supremes at Taco Bell... but I've now decided to change my diet and stick to my own prepared food...or my mothers will be much much better for me and my body. I know kids that buy Taco Bell for lunch religiously at school, or domino's pizza; I was never fortunate enough to spend a $4 on lunch everday and came with packed carrots and a PB and J. After reading Fast Food Nation I am so thankful that I am even limited to eating fast food on a rare weekend, and I agree that it is very convenient for fast paced lives but Schlosser has released what people sacrifice for their bodies for their own convenience. I look back in disgust at the Hot Lunches I begged my parents for in school, we would complain to the school that the fried chicken was sometimes purple or awkwardly brown; and now because of Schlosser's book I am changing my diet and sticking to my own prepared food...or my mothers. Fast Food Nation made me question where and how my hamberger meat traveled from its producer- why would I want to eat something when I dont know what it ate or how it was handled.
A Must-Read for anyone that eats fast food.......2007-01-09
It's important to stay informed - to be armed with the knowledge to make the right choices as to what you put in your body and how you choose to stay healthy as you move forward in life... Sounds cheesy? or is it simply good common sense to do so? This book will arm you with what you need to know about fast food (and indeed the food industries generally), and what they have to do in order to get products to you. I read this a couple of years ago, and have been buying copies for friends ever since. I feel it is required reading...

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat.
Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies. "Eating in the United States should no longer be a form of high-risk behavior," he writes. Where to begin? Ask yourself, is the true cost of having it "your way" really worth it? --Lesley Reed
Book Description
Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but here Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning. Schlosser's myth-shattering survey stretches from California's subdivisions where the business was born to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike where many fast food's flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate. He also uncovers the fast food chains' disturbing efforts to reel in the youngest, most susceptible consumers even while they hone their institutionalized exploitation of teenagers and minorities.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-06-09
The book is very informative about not only what is put in the food but also how the companies formed, and how it affects society. I worked in the fast food industry and have seen the high turn over rate that occurs. I also know that the companies isn't that sanitary. No hairnets, no gloves, I have witness someone sneeze on their hands and continue making the burger. The same oil used to fry the certain meat is the same used to fry the fries and as a vegan that didn't jive well.
The book although focusing on the fast food companies agenda and inner workings did bring to light that many of your food is not handled properly not just at the slaughterhouse but when it gets to the location as well. It is a book that everyone should read, because if everyone was aware of the events and demanded a change, it would happen.
"Please drive up to the window".......2007-06-06
The first time I read this book, I was working at a fast food joint. Every time I put one of those carnation pink waffles on the grill, all I could think about were the people of Greely, CO and what they went through to make sure that the people whining at the tills get their double cheeseburger. I never realized what went into those combo meals and even though I had a thankless job. After my expeirences in combination with reading this book, I will never work fast food again since everyone looses in the equasion.
Do you want fries with that?.......2007-06-06
This book makes a persuasive case for rethinking the way that America feeds itself. Mr Schlosser has gathered the evidence and is unrelenting in his condemnation of the behavior of the fast food giants. We are taken on a tour of the fast food industry and it isn't pretty!
The saddest part for me was to discover that Subway, which could reasonably be described as a healthier fast food option, is one of the worst companies in terms of the way it treats its franchisees.
We need healthy fast food which provides a fair living for the workers and decent nutrition for the consumer. Not too much to ask, you would have thought...
Fascinating and eye-opening look at fast food........2007-06-01
Wow. What can I say about this other than it really opened my eyes to what I was eating. I am not in the best shape of my life but recently rededicated myself to getting more exercise and eating right. In the past I have tried some fad diets and they would work for a time but they would eventually wear off. This time I decided to take a slightly different approach. I decided to really LEARN what I was eating. And this book told me a lot about what was in those burgers.
I was listening to a Diggnation episode and Kevin Rose mentioned this book so I took a look. From the first chapter to the last, I was totally fascinated with it. The book discusses the history of fast food restaurants, the meatpacking industry and other related areas. It gave me insight into the food production. Now I have more reason to NOT want to eat fast food.
As far as the writing goes, I really enjoyed it. The author spent a lot of time researching and including lots of interesting information. Some of it was disgusting (wait to you read what is really in that McD's hamburger) but it was interesting. The author's style was very easy to read and not dry or boring at any point.
If you want to really learn about what you are eating when you go to McDonalds, Burger King or other fast food joints, I HIGHLY recommend you read this book. As I said above, it is truly eye-opening.
GREAT!.......2007-05-19
An important subject written about ease and skill. Schlosser lets the facts speak for themselves, and the facts are horrifying. This book ranks up there with SILENT SPRING and THE JUNGLE. A must read!

In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. The three books in Pullman's heroic fantasy series, published as trade paperbacks, are united here in one dazzling boxed set that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. In these new editions, each chapter opens with artwork by Pullman himself, along with chapter quotations from the likes of Milton, Donne, Black, Byron, and the Bible that did not appear in earlier editions. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands. (Ages 13 and older)

Now, for the first time, the HIS DARK MATERIALS Trilogy is available in a trade paperback edition. Impressed.......2007-06-27
While I had already read the entire trilogy, upon re-reading it I realized it was so worth it. The writing is impeccable, Pullman really knows how to tug at one's mindstrings. Although, definately NOT for those who struggle to look outside the box. Also, I would be slow to reccomend this book to someone that is very religious and won't appriciate reading a story about a land that could or could not be real. Overall, simply enthralling and wonderful.
The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass.......2007-06-27
Such a good Trilogy that I read all three books one after the other in just one weekend. Losing that much sleep is not good for someone my age, but I couldn't bring myself to sleep till I finished, and I wanted the story to continue even after that.
Awesome Trilogy.......2007-06-27
Usually the first book in the series is the best. In this case, I loved all three, and each one was better than the previous one. So much imagination and creativity. Loved them :)
Strangled Fantasy.......2007-06-22
The stories are smothered by the weight of paranoiac, iconoclastic, pompous rubbish.
Ideologies wrench the plot, strangling the narratives. The implausibility of character and action increases with each book in the series, yielding not the probable impossible of good fantasy, but the improbable impossible of bad fantasy fiction.
Just finished the first book - great stuff!!.......2007-06-19
Sad when it was over - I hope we get to spend more time with my favorite polar bear and female witch. I really enjoyed this book, especially Lyra, the "wise beyond her years" protagonist. Mr. Pullman was able to create a beautifully vivid world that was part Victorian, part "Conan the Barbarian" and part modern. Many memorable scenes. Can't wait to ready book two and see the movie in Dec!!!!

Book Description
Authored by a former spammer, this is a methodical, technically explicit expose of the inner workings of the SPAM economy. Readers will be shocked by the sophistication and sheer size of this underworld.
From the Author: "You may hate spam and think all spammers are evil, but listen to my story and see why I do this and more importantly, HOW."
For most people, the term "SPAM" conjures up the image of hundreds of annoying, and at times offensive, e-mails flooding their inbox every week. But for a few, SPAM is a way of life that delivers an adrenaline rush fueled by cash, danger, retribution, porn and the avoidance of local, federal, and international law enforcement agencies. "Inside the SPAM Cartel" offer readers a never-before seen view inside this dark sub-economy. You'll meet the characters that control the flow of money as well as the hackers and programmers committed to keeping the enterprise up and running. You may disagree with their objectives, but you can't help but to marvel at their ingenuity and resourcefulness in defeating spam filters, avoiding being identified, and staying one step ahead of the law.
* Spam makes up now 64% of all email sent and it is said to be the most annoying part of being online.
* You'll meet the characters that control the flow of money as well as the hackers and programmers committed to keeping the enterprise up and running.
* Authored by a former spammer, this is a methodical, technically explicit expose of the innerworkings of the SPAM economy.
Customer Reviews:
Childish. Why reward a crook?.......2006-01-05
Well, the author is clearly a Chickenboner - the book is full of grammatical errors, especially toward the end. It also has major factual errors, as other reviewers have pointed out. (I skimmed it at the local library.) Also, he's clearly a criminal, since spamming is illegal in most jurisdictions, so I give it 1 star.
If Only He Did Not Play So Fast and Loose With facts.......2005-07-12
The Vikings from Monty Python's Flying Circus love SPAM so much, that the mere mention of the word has them break out in song, singing "Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!". For e-mail users, there are not many who would give the same response. We get it. We despise it. We wonder how many times we will get the same messages over and over again. But do we truly understand the machinations behind the scenes of the SPAM industry? It is this fundamental question that drives "Inside the SPAM Cartel: Trade Secrets From The Dark Side" (Spammer X, Jeffrey Posluns, Technical Editor, Syngress Press, 2004, 413 Pages). Written by an insider, the book provides detailed information and background but at times falters because of some very strongly stated opinions and facts that are just plain incorrect, as well as a very significant omission.
The book starts out strongly, as the author profiles the typical Spammer he is associated with and moves on to show that their is inherent trust among spammers. This trust, it seems, is based on necessity so that they can help each other make money. Money is part of a larger theme in this book because it is money that drives spammers and the content they deliver. Did you ever wonder why you see less and less pornography spam and increased amounts of messages for home mortgages? Because that is where the money is to be made.
The author makes a strong presentation throughout the book on how SPAM came to be from a simple but fatal flaw in SendMail, taking advantage of an Internet Architecture that was based on trust and not security, to the big money it is today. Consider that even if SPAM filters catch 99% of SPAM, the Spammers are still making money. Why? Because people are buying. The author not only gives an education on the many different types of SPAM, but shows you the tricks of the trade to bypass SPAM filters and get SPAM Messages read. You will also learn how to create a digital forensic trail to create a profile of a Spammer. You will also learn how they create profiles of you and your behaviours. You will also learn how the CAN-SPAM Act works, what is covered under the law, how to comply with the law and the huge legal loopholes that exist in the law that has Spammers scoffing at the law.
Yes the book is comprehensive, but suffers from what this reader considers to be some fatal flaws which take some of the sheen off of the credibility of the author and of the editorial vetting process of the publisher (note that this is not referring to the technical editing, but the editing to validate content. First, it is safe to assume that "Spammer X" is a citizen of a country in the British Commonwealth. How is this known? When you read in his book that the CAN-SPAM Act was passed by "Parliament", it is clear of the author's origin and his lack of knowledge of "big picture" issues. This is further compounded by the author's statement that CAN-SPAM will eventually become international law. This statement misses the point that there is no such thing as International Law that is binding on any country that chooses to ignore it.
The most egregious number that sticks out in this reader's mind comes from this quote in Chapter 10:
"With an estimated 273,706,064 Americans on the Internet...".
When this reader saw that number, some checking had to be done. Keep in mind that this book was written in 1994. According to the 2005 CIA World Factbook, last updated on June 30, 2005, the 2005 U.S. Population is estimated to be 295,734,134. That would mean the author is stating that 92.5% of Americans are on the Internet. This is very amazing when you consider that only 235,404,000 (and change) Americans are over the age of 14, and that only 260,000,000 live above the poverty line.
The reason that this concerns this reader is that if the author has played this fast and loose with these facts, and it was not caught in the editorial process, how can any of the other numbers in the book be trusted? It pains me to say this given my distrust of IT analyst firms, but how can an author who has played so fast and loose with numbers and facts be in a position to criticize anyone else's number?
Finally, I am disappointed that the author devotes a 29 page appendix and numerous references in the book on the anti-SPAM features of Microsoft Exchange, while totally ignoring the built in anti-SPAM features of Lotus Domino 6, which has over 100,000,000 users worldwide. Before writing this review, I asked the technical editor about this. He indicated that it was more than likely a reflection of the experience of the author(s), and that on at least two occasions he had made recommendations to include other products and service types as well. The author and Syngress did not do so, and it leaves this reader feeling a little empty.
Who Should Read This Book?
This book should be read by people interested in SPAM as a topic, information security managers, e-mail administrators, and educators.
The Scorecard
Because of the opinionated presentation, in some cases based on suspect facts and information, I am giving this book two ratings.
For readability, technical education and content: Birdie on short Par 4
For errors, mistakes of fact and opinions: Bogey on a Par 5 Reachable in 2 and playing downwind. The author should not have duck-hooked his drive into the trees.
Interesting read as long as you don't throw it out the window.......2005-07-01
This book is basically 'how to spam' for newbies; or 'how to analyze spam', if you prefer. In any case, it's for technical users. If you are looking for a novel, check "Spam Kings" instead.
Anyway, this book is written by a spammer, which (quite often) tries to justify himself as being a "legimate spammer" (meaning that he will send the stuff even if he knows it's overpriced, the spam was not opt-in, etc). This becomes quite annoying after a while, specially because he says "I don't care if you want to receive the spam or not; you are going to receive it". Thanks man.
As for a short advice on whether you should buy this book: If you are a hacker wanna be, or have an interest in security, it's a decent read.
Good book on fighting spam.......2005-04-04
If a book like 'Spam Kings' can be considered a biography, then Inside the Spam Cartel is the technical manual. Written from the perspective of a spammer, it is a first-person account of the technology used in spamming. The book details not only the technologies used by spammers, but also the techniques and the subversive modi operandi.
From a technical perspective, the book shows how to determine where a spam e-mail originates and how to read e-mail headers to determine a message's path. Inside the Spam Cartel also explains various phishing scams and how they are propagated. Spam is an enormous irritant, but phishing is so nefarious that it has the potential to disrupt a large sector of the economy.
Like a genie from a bottle, spam is out of the can and it will never go away. But organizations needn't resign themselves to being victims. Whereas Spam Kings identifies the enemy, Inside the Spam Cartel helps you fight him.
Glad to see something with a different point of view.......2005-02-24
I must admit upfront that I am a basic newbie in this spam game this is the first time I read any book that deals with spam specifically. I will not therefore be able to compare it to any other spam book on the shelves today. I will, however, say that this book is very different from any book dealing with spam in that it has a neutral point of view and sometime sides with the spammers on some issues (sometimes I agree with the author). The main point in this book is that you do not need to put every spammer in jail to get them out of business but rather create more effective filters and educate the end users.
I picked this book up mainly because I wanted to know how do spammers make money an keep them selves in business and how actually clicks on those email links and reads the spam email. Both of these questions were answered in the book, and I was able to see that spamming could be a profitable thing making more money that the average hardworking Joe. The book also goes into lots of detail on how spammers bypass some filters, make their products sell, the current law, and so on. In the end this book was an informative, enjoying, and easily readable book I have seen in a while.

Book Description
A delectable journey into the world of chocolate--from manufacturing to marketing, French boutiques to American multinationals--by the award-winning author of Olives.
Science, over recent years, has confirmed what chocolate lovers have always known: the stuff is actually good for you. It's the Valentine's Day drug of choice, has more antioxidants than red wine, and triggers the same brain responses as falling in love. Nothing, in the end, can stand up to chocolate as a basic fundament to human life.
In this scintillating narrative, acclaimed foodie Mort Rosenblum delves into the complex world of chocolate. From the mole poblano--chile-laced chicken with chocolate--of ancient Mexico to the contemporary French chocolatiers who produce the palets d'or--bite-sized, gold-flecked bricks of dark chocolate--to the vast empires of Hershey, Godiva, and Valrhona, Rosenblum follows the chocolate trail the world over. He visits cacao plantations, meets with growers, buyers, makers, and tasters, and investigates the dark side of the chocolate trade as well as the enduring appeal of its product.
Engaging, entertaining, and revealing, Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light is a fascinating foray into this "food of the gods."
Customer Reviews:
Not Interesting as a Book.......2007-04-05
This book would do well to advertise itself as a series of articles about topics and people related to chocolate and chocolate production, but marketed as the story of chocolate it's needlessly boring. The chapters are about the length of an article and don't seem to be interconnected except in subject matter. The first few chapters were very interesting, but around the chapter "The Chocolate Coast" I realized that these were the longest 140-some pages of my life. I would be more interested in the history and lore of chocolate, rather than chapter after chapter of how he followed someone around, was almost denied access to their secrets/factory, and then talking about the different fermentation processes and what the machines look like. He may fare better to talk about wines, because that's how the subject is treated and somehow it just doesn't fit. He becomes haughty about the inferiority of american chocolate, treating his audience as a oenophile would speak to someone who drinks wine coolers. As for the writing, it seems to steer wrecklessly between very dry and excessively nostalgic.
This book would be a winner with people interested chocolate economics, how different people use difference processes, and how chocolate is used in foods around the world. Unfortunately I wasn't looking for any of these things.
loved this book.......2007-02-26
This book was great to find out the background/history of chocolate and the inside to different "brand" names around the world. Though he skims over some "brands" and doesn't go into much detail on some, I still found it a good read.
Will appeal both to cooks and to chocolate fans who just like reading about it........2007-02-06
The uses and innovations of chocolate in foods from around the world at last receives embellishment in Mort Rosenblum's "Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light", a lively survey blending a travelogue with culinary history and industry insights. From chocolate's health promises to its various renditions, the pages pack in plenty of mouth-watering detail and will appeal both to cooks and to chocolate fans who just like reading about it.

Interesting view of the Chocolate Biz.......2006-06-27
Rosenblum's book is a fun read and you'll learn a ton about the choco biz, but the tasting notes are lost inside all the gossip.
I prefer The Chocolate Connoisseur for more focused detail on just chocolate and learning how to distinguish between various grades. This is more of an industry approach and extensive and interesting as are Rosenblum's other food books.
Deliciously Interesting.......2006-02-16
This was a delightful way to learn about the history of chocolate. Well written, clear and concise. I learned alot from this book and it spurred me on to try some new ways of preparing chocolate dishes. I found it very useful in sharing history with I shared chocolate dishes with. It definately gives you a topic of conversation at almost any meal.

Book Description
A journey into the darkly compelling world of professional boxing in America and Britain. Vividly and astutely written, drawing on hours of conversations with some of the biggest names in the sport. This is no ordinary book about boxing. Dark Trade is Donald McRae's illuminating five-year journey through the intense and forbidding world of the professional fight game. Tyson, Bruno, Hamed, Benn, Eubank, Holyfield, Watson, Jones, and Toney confide in him their fears and ambitions. Their fantastic, almost mythological stories are uncovered in new and striking detail, drawn from the hundreds of hours McRae has spent in their company. With wit, compassion, and lucidity, Dark Trade examines the ways in which race and violence beat at the heart of American and British society and what it is that drives men to pursue this most brutal kind of fame. 304 pp 6 x 9 16 pp b/w photos

A journey through the boxing world of the 90s........2006-12-29
A nicely written account of the author's personal journey through boxing in the 90s. The author vividly describes his encounters with some of the big names in the sport: Oscar De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones, Jr. and especially, James Toney. What's interesting about these sections of the book is that McRae really seems to get to know the people he's writing about and is able to reveal sides of their characters that aren't normally seen. I read this over a weekend, neglecting everything else I had planned to do because I couldn't put it down.
Give it a chance...................you'll thank me........2004-05-18
It took awhile for me to get into this book. If you can get past the white person growing up in racist South Africa yet I feel the pain of my fellow man opening paragraph this book will enthrall you.
Yes, you'll LOVE IT.
Every story about boxing is spelt out. The hangers on, the women, the entourage, the scum, the promoters, everyone. The story about Azuma Nelson will amaze you. It is one of those books I read 5 years ago, 2 times since and can still quote verbatim.
Give this book a chance. A great writer who realizes in the 2nd chapter that he is not the story. This isn;t a history or the sport but a snapshot in time. Well worth the money and the read
One of sports finest!!.......1999-01-11
This is perhaps the best book on sports that I've read, and I've read many. Mcrae does an excellent job at making an inhumane sport suprisingly humane. An immensly joyable book.
Boxing - as it is.......1998-12-22
I could not put down this book. Somehow, McRae has turned some of the most fearsome men in the world into pussycats. How he could make James Toney et al sympathetic characters is beyond me. I am a sports fan, but I believe this is a book that can be read and enjoyed by all.
a book about boxing that becomes a great deal more.......1998-09-19
the "professional" reviews of this book all talk about its relevance for people with an interest in boxing. certainly that might lead the casual buyer to the book but it quickly becomes clear that this remarkable work provides a door to an underworld of british and american subculture that is normally hermetically sealed to the rest of us. quite how mcrae pulls off this connection to an alien society is never quite clear but the overall effect and the material that he refines is an extraordinary trip into motivations and manipulations that leave the reader wondering if a fiction might not be easier to deal with

Book Description
Although labor unions have faced a decline in membership in recent decades, they have not necessarily lost their political clout. This timely book illuminates the inner dynamics of labor's relationship to the American political system over the past generation. It examines organized labor from the Johnson administration to the end of Clinton's first term, showing that labor's alliance with the Democratic Party has endured despite changes in the economy and the revival of conservatism.
Drawing on extensive interviews with union leaders and lobbyists, Taylor E. Dark provides a historical perspective often lacking in studies of union political involvement. He compares the relationship of presidents Johnson, Carter, and Clinton with labor and analyzes cases of union involvement in legislative lobbying, executive decision-making, and both congressional and presidential elections.
The book explores such topics as the effects of political reform on union power, the development of union legislative goals, and the impact of unions on economic policymaking, and also evaluates the controversy over union campaign spending in the 1996 elections. It demonstrates that labor's evolving alliance with the Democrats continues to shape America.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive text.......2006-03-18
Covers pretty much everything about unions in national politics from the early 1960s to 2001, with a strong argument for the resiliency of the union/Democrat alliance.
An excellent work on unions in American politics.......1999-01-24
This book provides a thorough and well-written account of the role of labor unions in the Democratic party since the 1960s. I found its argument that the unions were more effective than commonly believed to be quite interesting and (mostly) convincing. Simply put, this is the most comprehensive and detailed book on this subject currently available, and should be the starting point for all future discussions of union political activity. The chapters on Congress and on the Clinton administration were especially good at overturning some commonly-held notions about a break in union/Democrat relations.
This work should be of interest not only to academics, but also to union activists and anyone interested in the current nature of Democratic party coalitions.
A useful antidote to the wishful thinking of labor activists.......1998-12-30
*The Unions & the Democrats* is a decisive rejoinder to those who claim American labor is in a period of resurgence and renewal. In fact, as Professor Dark amply illustrates, labor's role as an adjunct to the Democrat Party has remained consistent over the years, fending off challenges from 'Left' and 'Right' alike, so far as those terms have any real meaning in the lexicon of reformist American politics. The book is especially strong on the period since 1964, when American labor came into its own, emerging from its anti-Communist past to actively promote Democratic party values from the war in Vietnam to civil rights, all the while remaining firm as an agency of class control. The fundamental relationship between the labor movement and the Democrats remains, as Professor Dark is happy to remind us, fundamentally unchanged.
There is, too, excellent sections detailing the controversy surrounding labor spending during the 1996 presidential campaign and the effect of 'New Democrats' like Clinton to better 'rationalize' the union/Democrat relationship. In fact, an argument can be made that Clinton himself better exemplifies the values of the traditional union member than his more 'activist' counterparts. Professor Dark's conclusions will challenge, in fact, a number of activists' sacred cows, though in an even-handed and fair manner.
Anyone looking for a good resume of 'New Labor' and its possibilities would be well-served by reading *The Unions & the Democrats*. Pay special attention to section on contemporary organizing. Professor Dark himself appears a likely candidate for the new type of union member, seeming as he is one of many 'casual' workers in the new non-tenure academic workplace.
A good overview of sources is included, many of which suggest avenues for future research.
