Product Description
America is reeling from the Iran Hostage crisis, which is threatening to topple the Carter presidency, and Claire Brooks is reeling from the collapse of her marriage. Frantic to escape the wreckage, she hops a plane to Amsterdam. Tulips, wooden shoes...it sounds restful. Not exactly. Amsterdam is packed with visitors, some noisily celebrating the new queen's coronation, and some all-too-quietly plotting a response to Iran. Claire couldn't find Iran on a map, but a reckless one-night stand with a reporter lands her in the thick of the intrigue, where even tulips can pack a threat. She's already learned she cannot trust her husband, and now, it seems, she's stumbled into a world where everybody's loyalty is up for grabs.

Coaching styles and techniques have evolved significantly since the militant days of Vince Lombardi and Woody Hayes. No longer can coaches gain respect and effort from players by yelling "My way or the highway," writes NBA coach and Zen master Phil Jackson in Shooting's foreword. "This new type of coach is one whose leadership is trusted because he shares it with his players." Jim Thompson tests this theory--and others, to varying degrees of success--throughout his two-year stint as coach of a Northern California girls' high school basketball team.
Skillfully weaving how-to coaching techniques and a diary containing his inner thoughts (and, at times, obsessions) with the progress of the Fremont Women Warriors, Thompson's philosophical and motivational account exposes the multilayered dynamics of the player-coach relationship. As the coach explains the value of "Encouraging Players to Disagree," or "The Art of Celebrating Practice," he shows how the Women Warriors respond to such techniques. After a lopsided loss to an inferior team, Thompson rips the Warriors for a lackluster effort. But, thanks to their share-the-leadership philosophy, the team suggests they update their antiquated Flex offense. At first, Thompson fears mutiny, but then he realizes that "sharing power increases your own power in the sense that the likelihood of success is greater when you create a partnership."
Coaches will appreciate the wealth of practical and light-hearted tips, such as "Drills with Consequences," "Creating a Team Vocabulary," and "Motivational Speeches." And readers will find themselves rooting for the inspirational Woman Warriors. But it's Shooting in the Dark's ability to blend these insights and intimate stories that will light even the darkest of gymnasiums. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
Shooting in the Dark: Tales of Coaching and Leadership by Jim Thompson is a philosophical account of the author's two-year tenure coaching a high school girls basketball team in Northern California. The book also draws content from topics in leadership theory and a course co-taught by the author at the Stanford School of Business called Learning to Lead. The overall result is a unique journey into the world of coaching. The book features a Foreword by Phil Jackson, Head Coach of the Chicago Bulls.
Customer Reviews:
An important tool in understanding leadership..........2000-05-02
This book will challenge much of what you might have already learned/experienced as an athlete and/or coach, especially with respect to certain sports, such as football. Although Mr. Thompson's book is centered on his experiences while coaching high school girls basketball for two seasons, his lessons pervade beyond the gym. The chapters pertaining to sharing power with players (or students, or employees) and visualization are particularly strong. He weaves in relevant and occasionally humorous analogies and anecdotes (often in the format of diary entry interludes) in cementing key concepts. Do not bother reading this book if you remain steadfast in your admiration for Bobby Knight's coaching style, as this book's message is more in tune with Phil Jackson's (he even wrote the foreword). Enjoy!

A wonderful companion to the Dark Shadows movies.......2004-02-23
From 1966 to 1971, America was treated to the wonderful daytime television Dark Shadows. Capitalizing on the success of the show, M-G-M agreed to produce two movies based (loosely) on the TV show's story: House of Dark Shadows (1970) and Night of Dark Shadows (1971). Produced in 1998, this book is a wonderful companion to those two movies. It has articles by Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), Kate Jackson (Tracy Collins), Nancy Barrett (Carolyn Stodard/Clair Jenkins) and Lara Parker (Angelique Collins), original scripts and notes, and a plethora of wonderful pictures.
I found this to be a great book, one that I am glad I got my hands on. It's got a lot in it, and it sure brings back a lot of memories to an old Dark Shadows fan. I highly recommend this book!
great book for dark shadows movie fans.......2004-01-03
in 1998 this book about the 2 movies was released and i must say it was everything i hoped for the 2 scripts that reveal all the missing parts espcially night of dark shadows hopefully the movie will be restored the way dan curtis wanted it to be ,\
if you love these movies based on the series you have to own this book it also has lots of pictures in it . buy this book for yourself in fact buy 2 copies one for yourself and the other for a dark shadows fan as a gift great book
Reviving the Curse of the Collins Family.......2002-11-02
When greedy Willie Loomis unwittingly unchains the hidden coffin of long dead Barnabas Collins, he unleashes a reign of terror upon the decaying family and the local New England town of Collinsport. Who suddenly turns up on their doorstop but a debonaire English "cousin" whose resemblance to the ancestral portrait is uncanny. He sets about restoring the Old House to its former grandeur, but is soon fatally attracted to the family's lovely governess. A series of attacks on women are considered suspicious by the resident doctor and a loyal
professor in the area, both of whom come to the gruesome conclusion that there is a vampire on the prowl. This is fast-paced fluff of debatable literary merit, but if you are into Gothic Horror tales, you will enjoy the jealousy, evil schemes and desperate remedies undertaken to end this family curse. When the coastal mists finally evaporate, there are few left to tell the grisly tale of a vampires's dream to achieve a normal life and reclaim his lost love. NB: This scenario vastly differs from the daytime soap, as Victoria Winters, Quentin and Angelique are not included in the blood-spattered cast.
Great for every Dark Shadows fan!.......2000-12-22
My whole family is a fan of the series "Dark Shadows," both old and new. For this holiday season, I decided to buy my mother this book, because when she was young she saw the movies in the theatres and always spoke of how the second (featuring Quentin) was so choppy. When I finally got to watch it, I agreed, but I knew there had to be a reason. I had found out that they cut a lot of the movie, and when I found this book, I knew I had to get it for her! This has complete original scripts and Dan Curtis' notes! It's a great gift, because now she can see just what she was missing! I know in the book it says they lost the cut film, but I've recently heard they found it! Hopefully this book will become not just a "fill-in what you missed," but a companion to a complete re-released movie!
So THAT'S What We've Been Missing...........2000-03-17
It's a real treat to see the original scripts to both HOUSE and NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS, since both (especially the latter) suffered significant cuts before audiences got to see them way back when. The behind-the-scenes articles by several of the stars are priceless, especially Kathryn Leigh Scott's ruminations on some of the other personalities involved in the production. Nice package with great photos. Definitely recommended to fans of the movies and the TV series.

Book Description
Thirty-year-old Kit Mason has been blind for six years, and she still hasn’t accepted what has happened to her. Not only is her career as a songwriter/guitarist stalled, but her personal life is the pits. Kit’s closest friends, Carolina, Susan, Marion, and Jackie, all members of her former softball team, the Ruthless Babes, have encouraged her to branch out in her music, and decide – during a ribald and beer-fuelled get-together – to kick-start her social life with a companion-wanted ad in a Toronto newspaper.
Before the plans can take effect, however, one of the Babes is brutally murdered. The police are sure that she was the victim of a serial killer who is on the loose, but the Babes, shattered though they are, begin to suspect that the police are wrong.
With the fighting spirit that served them well on the baseball diamond, they throw themselves – sometimes literally – into the investigation, much to the annoyance of the police detective assigned to the case. What they find puts them all at risk, and affects Kit’s life in ways she never could have expected – just when her musical career and her love-life are taking a turn for the better.
Shooting Straight in the Dark, full of the atmosphere of the music business and the affectionate banter of good friends, is smart, funny, and crammed with suspense.

SHOOTING STRAIGHT IN THE DARK.......2003-11-02
Rick Blechta has a way of involving me with the characters such that I wonder,"what are they doing now, after the story?". They become almost real and I almost forget they are not real and that must say something about the authors story telling ability. I'm genrally on a pragmatic plane. My friends who don't genrally read anything but technical stuff also love Rick's books. He is a really great story teller!
Hooked from Chapter 1.......2003-10-02
I purchased this book mainly because my old guitar teacher, Linc Chamberland, is mentioned in it. What surprised me (after reading the back cover) is that I really enjoyed it -- and I don't read mysteries. Blechta, being a musician, naturally has all the musical facets down pat, but he also tells a darn good story. Within a chapter, I was caught up in the fate of the main character. When I had to put the book down to teach a few lessons, I was extremely put out! This is a terrific thriller, telling the story of a blind guitarist and her friends as they try to solve a murder. They also don't know that the murderer is now after them and the parts of the story he tells are suitably creepy. I stayed up past 3 a.m. (much to the annoyance of my wife) to finish the book as it drove to a satisfying climax, and the only thing negative I have to say about the book is that I finished it. I hope that Blechta is planning a sequel. I like these characters!
High-Energy Entertainment.......2003-09-19
I don't usually read books cover-to-cover in one sitting, but Shooting Straight in the Dark had me up until 4 a.m. recently. Even though it's supposed to be a mystery, there is a lot more depth to the characters (especially the main character, Kit) than you normally find in genre fiction. The author has done a very good job making it all very real.
The plot, too, is quite good, involving a murder (naturally) but it's set against a backdrop of music, something I found very interesting and informative. Blechta has also given his protagonist another wrinkle: she's blind. He pulls off this aspect particularly well. He made me really feel what it might be like to be without sight.
All in all, I quite enjoyed this book. The writing is refreshingly good (often quite funny, too), the characters compelling and the plot rockets along to a very satisfying conclusion.
Can we hear more about Kit and her friends really soon?
Shooting Straight to the Top.......2003-05-12
I am delighted to find that Rick Blechta has now succesfully consolidated his own unique writing style with this latest crime thriller. He creates a well rounded and intriguing plot that succesfully blends suspense, tension and humour. With 'Shooting Straight' Blechta has forcefully elbowed his way into a crowded room of crime writers and has made himself heard above the din! Well done.
Shooting the Language.......2003-05-06
This is a book by a musician trying to imitate John Grisham. The problem is Bkechta is not a writer. The book is filled with so many cliches and hackneyed phrases that you feel your slogging through deep mud. Examples "The door burst open and I screamed in alarm" or "It was so quiet you could hear half (italiczed) a pin drop." It reads like one of those formulaic Goosebumps books. He also shows us how to make many grammatical mistakes such as "...who'd worked with the good doctor closely." Is that Doctor Closely I presume? It's the work of an amateur, a first book try that every writer does and usually discards (if he or she is smart). The story plods, it's predictable where it should not be, the characters dry, wooden, shallow, the blind girl 'sees' things she should not, for example she knows from across the room that her friend is sprawling on the couch. It's just not worth the time to reach the anticlimactic ending that you almost predicted. I say 'almost' because it's much more poorly constucted, conceived, and written than I ever imagined.

From the author: Most policy debates are fought largely with volleys of ideological slogans rather than evaluations of the costs and benefits arising from alternative proposals. The failure to measure costs and benefits creates a vacuum, rendering the political process more susceptible to manipulation by special interests. A lack of information regarding costs and benefits can also inhibit negotiations for mutually beneficial compromises. The failure to employ cost benefit analysis arises from the expense and time involved in measuring complicated phenomena. In addition, when decision makers do employ cost benefit analysis, they often omit significant gains and losses due to difficulties encountered in collecting information. In order to remedy these difficulties policy makers must make better use of computer software, which is currently being developed.
