5 out of 5 stars Intermediate Algebra Book.......2007-02-17

I was very impressed with how fast the book arrived. It also arrived in great condition. I would definately consider doing business with this vendor again.

2 out of 5 stars Book needs more explanations and less fluff.......2005-06-04

Book needs more explanations on problems and less "Study habit reminders" and other fluffy stuff that I just skip over. What student has time to read the "extra optional stuff"?
In my humble opinion, this book doesn't explain problems well.
It doesn't explain WHY. It assumes you know WHY problems are solved in certain ways.

For example, on page 110, she throws a property at you:

"If A is a positive number, then | X | < a is equivalent to -a < X < a."

It would really help me understand this property if I knew WHY| X | < a is equivalent to -a < X < a.

The answer book should explain more also - especially for problems that are different from the examples.

I do like the idea of concept checks though.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes complex.......2003-09-29

This book covers many problems but lacks descriptive solutions. I could not get a good concept of how to solve the problems because most of the solutions were broken into several sections. This book does give some of the answers but again it does lack descriptive solutions.

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to get this book!.......2003-09-17

In my pre-algebra I and II classes, we used Martin-Gay's books. They were wonderful! They're easy to understand and follow with plenty of exercises. I was looking forward to using her books for Intermediate Algebra. I was extremely disappointed to find that the college switched to a different book...one that isn't helpful at all. I'm planning on using Martin-Gay's book along side our college textbook we now have. Hopefully, the lightbulb will be going on much quicker!

4 out of 5 stars Very Complete.......2003-03-07

This book won't let you get stuck, it explains all concepts clearly. It offers a good beginning algebra review, and gives you a thorough dose of the tougher stuff.

Book Description

Twelve specific and very important cognitive functions begin developing in the brain at birth. These "skills" are built in to every individual and are fully developed -- and unchangeable -- by adulthood. Everyone has these same capabilities, but to varying degrees. And it is this unique and unalterable combination of one's strengths and weaknesses that determines success or failure in any given role.

Smarts contains the groundbreaking Executive Skills Profile: a powerful self-assessment tool that will identify, once and for all, a person's innate strengths and weaknesses. The results offer tangible proof of why we gravitate to certain tasks and struggle with others. With this newfound clarity, readers will learn to play to their stronger skills, and avoid wasting time on lesser ones they can never improve upon. Most important, they will discover their own unique potential for excellence.

Supported by proprietary primary research and grounded in widely accepted principles of clinical and neuro-psychology, Smarts is a truly eye-opening book that will change how we think about ourselves -- and others.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Next to Collins & Buckingham.......2007-05-24

This is the most scientific, practical and applicable management book I have read in the last 5 years. It complements the work of Jim Collins and Marcus Buckingham, and makes them more usable and implementable.
All reviewers, readers, and professionals agree that it is one of the most helpful book they read lately. I just wonder why it didn't stay for long on the top 10 and 100 bestsellers list. It is obvious that publishers, media, and marketing make the list, not: value or substance. I recommend Martin's book to all management practitioners. Even Neuroscience advocates can use it to prove their theory true.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Ideas Presented.......2007-05-17

I thought the executive skills assessments were fantastic and found the book to be right on the money (at least with my skill set).

I do question the view that one's executive skills "never change". I think it's the sociology background I have and the thinking of "nurture" over "nature" inherent with that view. I still think people can change completely, even to the point of flip-flopping executive skills. I would like to see more hard data and studies done to prove or disprove this.

Otherwise, the book presented ideas that were not only interesting but very applicable to almost anyone, no matter your background or class.

5 out of 5 stars If you read no other management book this year..........2007-04-24

Here's my take on this book: I already believe in excellence; I want to know how to achieve it for myself and build it in others. This book does that.

Martin, et al., use a scientific research approach to self-evaluation and overcoming weaknesses in one's self and team members based upon recognition of how our brains are wired. The mix of science and practical application is a breath of fresh air! For example: I've already applied their strategy for overcoming my chronic lateness to meetings (yes, it s about my fear of being unproductive).

I find most business excellence books to be long on inspiration and short on useful tools. This book has so much meat to it that I'm going use in my work and in my studies. The evaluation tools, teaching skills suggestions and skills alignment concepts are all immediately transferable to my work context. The executive skills concepts certainly bear more research and study as to how this thinking impacts the art/science of management theory as well.

In summary, I generally find few business press books to be of enduring value, but I think Martin and colleagues have written an important one in SMARTS. I think they have really broken new ground in management science thinking, and I am looking forward to applying SMARTS wherever possible in work and life.

5 out of 5 stars Transformed how I do business.......2007-04-04

In Smarts, Martin, Dawson and Guare have helped me to understand why I approach my work in the way that I do, where I should concentrate my efforts and what work I should delegate to others. The executive skills questionnaire has been particularly useful in helping me to predict what future activities and tasks will be a "good fit", thus allowing me to better plan for and use my resources. Smarts has already changed the way that I manage my business.

5 out of 5 stars "Hardwired" for Peak Performance.......2007-03-07

In one of Chuck Martin's previous works, Tough Management, he recommends "seven winning ways to make tough decisions easier, deliver the numbers, and grow the business in good times and bad." None of the "ways" is a head-snapper, nor does Martin make any such claim. The substantial value of this book is derived, rather, from responses by more than 2,000 senior executives and managers in 50 countries who participated in a survey conducted by NFI Research, Martin's firm. They completed a brief survey segment every two weeks over a period of 24 months. That is a key point because, over time both circumstances and respondents' reactions to them change. The final survey results thus have much greater credibility. Martin operates a global idea exchange and research engine with a network base of more than 2,000 senior executives and managers from more than 1,000 companies in more than 50 countries, including half of the Fortune 500. His observations and recommendations are thus based on an abundance of real-world data that he and his NFI associates continue to accumulate and then evaluate with meticulous care.

In this volume, which he co-authored with Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, Martin develops in much greater depth many of the core concepts introduced in his previous books. For example, insights concerning how both individuals and collaborative teams can achieve and then sustain superior performance by leveraging their strengths (i.e. talents, skills, temperament, and experience) when completing tasks for which those strengths are most appropriate. In this volume, the authors assert that there are certain brain functions starting at birth "and they are "`hardwired'" into every individual. Brain researchers have found that these skills are fully developed by the time you become an adult. These skills are called `Executive Skills' because they help you execute tasks." OK but so what?

As the authors then explain, our strongest skills will continue to be our strongest skills and our weakest will continue to be our weakest -- and are not significantly changeable - as we become adults. "The opportunity is how to deal with [strengths and weaknesses], and this book provides a framework for you to do that." They identify and then rigorously examines twelve executive skills that range from self-restraint to stress tolerance. Mastery of these skills by those who comprise the workforce within a given organization (regardless of its size or nature) will enable it to derive substantial improvement of its productivity, quality, employee recruitment, employee retention, training, teamwork, competitive edge, reduction of stress, meetings, operational execution, and information management.

Martin, Dawson, and Guare agree with countless others that organizations must measure only what is most important, and they should do so with consistency. Hence the value of diagnostic tools such as the "Executive Skills Profile" that he provides in Appendix B. It enables each of those who read this book to tap into their greatest Executive Skills strengths and then leverage them when completing whatever tasks to which they have been assigned. At this point, it is important to keep in mind that one of the greatest challenges for supervisors is to make certain that they are locating those for whom they are directly responsible in proper alignment with tasks appropriate to their given strengths. Organizations that sustain such alignment are "hardwired for success" because their people - as individuals and as members of a team - are themselves "hardwired for success."

In my opinion, this is Chuck Martin's most valuable book, thus far, and another brilliant achievement. He and his co-authors, Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, invite those who wish to obtain updates and/or share their own comments to visit www.smartsthebook.com.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Martin's other books. I also recommend Bill George's Authentic Leadership and True North, Michael Ray's The Highest Goal, Ram Charan's Know-How, Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman's First, Break All the Rules and Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton's Now, Discover Your Strengths, Buckingham's The One Thing You Need to Know and Go Put Your Strengths to Work, and Success Built to Last co-authored by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery, and Mark Thompson.

Book Description

In clear, step-by-step detail, this highly practical manual provides a research-based framework for strengthening executive functioning in children and adolescents. The book explains how executive skills develop in children and are used in everyday life--from the self-regulation required for responsible behavior to the planning and initiation abilities needed to complete homework on time. Guidelines are presented for conducting multimodal assessments and using the results to plan environmental modifications, individualized instruction, coaching, and whole-class interventions. Attention is also given to working with children with ADHD and other clinical problems in which executive skills are impaired. Many of the techniques described can be implemented by teachers and parents in collaboration with school-based clinicians. Designed in a large-size format with convenient, lay-flat binding, the manual includes over a dozen reproducible assessment tools, checklists, and planning sheets, ready to photocopy and use.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Useful.......2007-04-11

I found the book extremely interesting, giving me many ideas for structuring my work with ADHD students as a tutor and coach.

3 out of 5 stars Common sense advice.......2007-02-05

As a parent, I may have missed some of the subtleties in this book, but I thought it seemed like a long exposition of what is largely common sense advice. No problem with it really - it was a good way to get started thinking about some strategies - but somehow I expected more insight out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Executive Skills .......2006-11-05

This book is very well written and provides a lot of useful information.

5 out of 5 stars Had to have it.......2006-08-19

I perused this book through interlibrary loan and had to have my own copy. Executive skills are reviewed and handy, handy procedures are given along with various forms intended to help the student, teacher, and parent stay organized and in tune with the student's performance. My copy is currently in my classroom and I intend to use it. This book is appropriate for any student, not just those with attention or organization difficulties.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Information for teaching Organizational Skills.......2005-09-17

This book gives detailed information that could help students develop "self-talk" cues to remain focused with homework assignments, daily organizational task and long term projects. The term Executive Function works. The forms at the end of the book are helpfull and can be rearranged for individual student use. A good overview of what can help students who have "ADD" or "ADHD".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool.......2007-05-12

I've read this book almost cover to cover and I've gained a lot of insight in using Skilled Facilitator approaches as a teacher and a minister. Mostly, it's given me insight into how to develop myself as a creative listener, and how to control my inner thought processes, and turn that back around into positive leadership for the good of the group. I find it particularly helpful to keep the RULES foremost in my mind as I interact with students and parishioners. And it's true that the more I model these rules, the more my students and the others around me absorb them and begin to use them in their own interactions.

5 out of 5 stars A FIELDBOOK OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.......2005-04-20

Central to this work is the Skilled Facilitator approach (TSF), a systematic, values-based approach to group facilitation; at its core is the idea that the way we act and the consequences we create begin with the way we think. Chapter one delineates the 10 key features of TSF approach. It is used to help groups and entire organizations address issues and make significant change, as well as in coaching, training, and conducting HRD/OD initiatives of all types.

This ambitious resource is bursting with 62 contributions clustered into seven parts:
1) Understanding the Skilled Facilitator Approach-main focus: summarizes the approach and describes its major principles and features (8 chapters)
2) Starting Out-main focus: using TSF in a variety of basic ways (12 chapters)
3) Deepening Your Practice-main focus: refining intervention and diagnosis skills, and increasing personal awareness (7 chapters)
4) Facing Challenges-main focus: dealing with the most difficult situations (5 chapters)
5) Seeking Your Path-main focus: integrating the TSF approach in practice and life (5 chapters)
6) Leading and Changing Organizations-main focus: creating major change in leadership and organizational functioning (15 chapters)
and
7) Integrating the Skilled Facilitator Approach in Your Worklife (and Non-Worklife)-main focus: shows how to integrate TSF with other approaches and roles (coach, trainer, consultant, leader, parent) (10 chapters)

The book is further enriched with: definitions; key points; examples; tools and techniques and samples of the outcomes they produce; reflections; model conversations; and resources.

As a consultant in organizational analysis, design and change, as well as a reviewer, I was particularly drawn to Chapter 51, "Do Surveys Provide Valid Information for Organizational Change?" by Peg Carlson. She concludes what we have found to be true of surveys-they are useful for spotlighting likely issues but they do not deliver the depth of analysis and meaning required in organizational consulting, nor the motivation for learning and deep change. This chapter is emblematic of the books' quality of content. In a nutshell, this book is outstanding! I highly recommend it.

    The worst vacation ever!

Thirteen-year old Kyle thought spending a vacation on the Oregon coast with his family would be great. He'd never flown before, and he'd never seen the Pacific Ocean.

Kyle's perfect vacation becomes a nightmare while he's babysitting his sister, BeeBee. An earthquake hits the coast and starts afire in their hotel. While fighting their way through smoke and flame, Kyle remembers seeing a sign at the beach that said after an earthquake everyone should go uphill and inland, as far from the ocean as possible. Tsunamis, giant waves that often follow earthquakes, can ride in from the sea and engulf anyone who doesn't escape fast enough.

Can Kyle and BeeBee outwit and outrun nature's fury to save themselves from tsunami terror?

The book I read is Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kerhet. It deserves 5 stars because it is very adventurous. This book is about a boy named Marty and his sister. His dad wins a trip to Oregon. There were three problems to this story First the hotel was set on fire. Then there was an earthquake. Last there were two tsunamis. The boy saved himself and his sister. They get help from their elderly friends and a dog along the way. This all happened when the parents are at sea on a cruise. This problem is solved when the children and the elderly couple climb a hill escaping the tsunami. I recommended this book to anyone who likes adventure and it is a very exciting book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kindergarten Resource.......2000-03-30

As a Kindergarten teacher, I have found the Starting Out Right book to be one of the best resources that I have ever used in my classroom. The text is very easy to read and very user friendly. The activities are great for any teacher making the changes in education. I only wish that I had found this book years ago. I would recommend this book for any teacher who is teaching reading strategies. In fact, my district is purchasing this book for ALL kindergarten teachers for our personal resource library.

I had to read this book for school and it was soo boring. This book was soooo stupid!

    5 out of 5 stars Earthquake terror.......2005-11-04

The book starts on a hot summer day on Magpie island when Jonathan 's mom breaks her ankle. So Jonathan's dad takes his mom to the hospital and leaves Jonathan and his sister Abby and the dog on the island. Then the earthquake hits breaking the bridge to the city, smashing the home, and making the river flood over the island. So Jonathan puts his sister, and his dog, and him on two trees that had fallen from the earthquake and floated to the city and was taken to the hospital.

3 out of 5 stars Magpie Island Mania.......2005-10-28

Earthquake Terror by Peg Keheret is probably the best fiction book I have ever read so far. I liked it most because ig is very dramatic, and the part when they figure out that Magpie Island, the island that the Palmers are camping on, is about to have an earthquake! When the earthquake is over, they discover the island is sinking. what will the kids do? Mean while, their parents are trapped in a car, and they don't know how to get out.
The palmers son, Jonathon, who is my favorite charachtor, is very creative with his decisions. He knows how to get off of the island, but he dosen't know if it will work. But why he can't just swim off of the island is what I don'tunderstand. But Abby, Jonathon's disable sittle sister can't swim, but she allways complains, which becomes very annoying. And when Jonathon is eating lunch in the hospital, he has an average lunch, but it felt like a royal lunch because he hadn't eaten in days. It was a great book, I never wanted to stop reading it, and that's why I'm writing a review on it.

5 out of 5 stars Mother nature isn't always on your side...........2005-02-22

During a camping trip, Jonathan and his sister, Abby, are put into a surpring situation that turns for the worst. The two children find themselves fighting for survival after a devastating earthquake hits. Alone, they must learn to survive and overcome their greatest fears.

    Man vs. Nature

I read this book around maybe two or three years ago, but it still sticks in my mind as entertaining and great. If your into nature disasters, pick this book up.

(Please add this from the description from the publisher.)

While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.
