Book Description
This volume tells of closing rail lines from historic junctions, aging industrial centers, agricultural villages, and familiar tourist destinations throughout the eastern half of the United States. Joseph Schwieterman takes a look at events that contributed to the demise of railroads in 64 towns and cities distinguished by their notable railroad histories or unusual experiences with rail line abandonment.
Rail line abandonment claimed more than half of U.S. rail route mileage during the past 50 years and is accompanied by controversial and unexpected developments--events affecting communities years after the last train departed.
This book is a concise narrative, with contrasting photos of local train stations in their prime and after abandonment.

A work of impressive and seminal scholarship.......2007-05-13
The two volume history, "When The Railroad leaves Town: American Communities In The Age Of Rail Line Abandonment" by Joseph P. Schwieterman (Associate Professor of Public Services management an Director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at De Paul University) is the history what happened in towns and villages across America when the nation's railroad systems began collectively eliminating more than 120,000 miles of routes (about half of their total mileage) beginning in 1916 and continuing down to the present day. Volume 1 covers the 'Eastern United States", with volume 2 covering the 'Western United States'. A work of impressive and seminal scholarship, Professor Schwieterman's informed and informative text is enhanced with the inclusion of maps and illustrations. "When The Railroad leaves Town: Volumes 1 & 2" is especially recommended for academic library American History, Social Issues, American Transportation Studies, and Urban-Planning reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
Wonderfully written, for any serious railfan either in the West OR East.......2007-01-24
This is a collection of individual vignettes of the end of rail service to a group of Eastern US cities. The towns range from very small hamlets to medium to large metropolises, from rural to urban. In every case Mr Schwieterman outlines how the local railroad came to be, how it prospered for a time but eventually went away, and what happened when it left with emphasis on the surrounding citizens and infrastructure. These vignettes have a air of sadness and poignancy about them, as they describe in some cases how the community around the railroad more or less died as a result of the closing of rail service. This is a book like other reviewers have said, that can be put down and picked up from time to time without losing any continuity due to its unique layout. I have had this book for some time now, and feel compelled to review it now that I am awaiting the authors newest book about rail abandonments in the Western US. This is one of the best books I have ever read on railroads, but in my opinion just about anyone with a interest in modern US history and how cities in the Eastern US came to be would enjoy it equally as I do. Very well done.
"A Wonderful Book--A Fascinating Read".......2001-12-26
The first time I cracked open the cover and read a few lines, I knew this book was a winner.
While there are literally thousands of books out there showing fantastic photos of trains present and past. And many railroads have had their histories chronicled, this book focuses on the towns the railroads touched. This angle is unique, refreshing and most of all mesmerizing.
The author obviously spent a great deal of time researching the topic. The background information he supplies is immense, this was NOT a topic that was superficially researched. The various photos showing abandon railroad grades and shots of once busy steel-rails covered over in asphalt are especially telling.
And while the folks looking for photos of coal-drags over tall mountains may be disappointed, anyone that wants to understand how the railroads REALLY affected towns across the eastern United States, then you need this book.
A good book that combines railroading with American history. It will cause the reader to think twice as they pass that abandon railroad grade or drive by that run-down station.

The Second Picture Book on the Southern.......2005-11-24
This book is part of the Images of Rail series that feature pictures from the history of railroads. The Southern Railway, now part of the Norfolk Southern system was already covered in one book in this series. But now the authors have collected another couple of hundred photographs of the yards, equipment and people.
Quite often these kind of books get interested in only showing pictures of locomotives. Because of the earlier book, this one has the opportunity to show other aspects of the railroad. This book is broken into five sections:
1. Facilities. Of particular interest here is the set of photographs showing how a hump yard works. It shows details of the retarders, switching controls, etc. Other pictures in this chapter show the inside of the maintenance facilities, both in the days of steam and diesel.
2. Passenger Trains. Showing the evolution of passenger equipment over about a hundred and fifty years. The oldest (style) engine is the reproduction of an 1830 engine.
3. The Railroad Goes to War. The Southern provided the core (perhaps all) of the 727 Railway Operating Battalion which later served in North Africa, Italy and France.
4. Working on the Railroad. People, equipment, places that make the railroad really work.
5. Steam on the Southern Railway. After the introduction of diesel engines (the Southern was the first to go all diesel) the company operated a fairly extensive steam escursion schedule for nearly forty years.
This is an excellent book, especially if the Southern is your favorite railroad, but also because it shows such an unusual side of railroading.

From the supplier: Trains are heavily used in the shipment of chemicals, with the usage of trains up almost 30% between 1990 and 1995, according to a study. There is concern about the safety record of the companies hauling the chemicals, which become particularly worrisome when considering the moving of high-level radioactive waste.

Much needed labor history.......2003-05-05
The labor movement today encounters calls for patriotic sacrifice as well as threats of employer bankruptcy and government attack. We need to be educated on these issues. For example, the Railway Labor Act has recently been used to deny airline workers the right to strike. This book by Dick Roberts tells you how this package of laws was first used against labor in the 1920s, to satisfy the needs of big business. Roberts tells the story of the rail barons' greed and the bailouts they got from bought-and-paid-for politicians. He also tells the story of the great struggles by rail workers. Throughout, the government has backed the railroad companies and called on rail workers to sacrifice in the name of patriotism, just as airline workers are today being pressured in the name of Homeland Security to abandon their right to strike and continue down the slippery slope of take-backs.
past and future struggles and crises the way out.......2003-02-24
The railroads, the first national industry, the industry on which giant battles were waged not just between the workers and the employers, but a major factor in farmers fight for land, and their continued fight for their fair share of the profits from their labor. This book talks about the railroad's real history in American capitalism, a history of class struggle, class war. This book also talks about how at a much earlier easier stage of the crisis of capitalism, the railroads themselves
were torn apart by economic crisis, thousands of employees lost their jobs, and the economy of this country was thrown amuck.
Read this now,
because the crisis of the railroads at they were when this book was written in the 1970s is nothing compared to the growing crisis. Read this now because it is written not as nostalgic lying history, or armchair economics, but as a contribution to the need for all working people, not just railroad workers, to know what is coming, know how our predecessors have shown the way to fight, know how to win!
Read this now because a crisis in the airline industry of exactly the same character with questions of nationalization is going on now. Here in Miami where the airlines are a major employer many of my friends and neighbors are afraid that their jobs will be lost. Read this book for them as well!
Useful study for debate on privitization and labor movement.......2002-12-02
A short, lively study of labor and capital in one of the key industries in modern society. The railroads have been one of the biggest money-makers for their wealthy owners from the mid-1800s on, and also one of the scenes of fierce strike battles as bosses brutally resisted workers' demands for better wages, job security and safer working conditions.
I found Robert's detailed look at stock ownership of the railroads in the 1970s very helpful in figuring out how modern capitalism works, and an example that could be applied to other major industries. His discussion of why essential industries such as transportation cannot be left to the mercy of the profit needs of private capital is really relevant for anyone grappling with the economic crises of the 21st century.
Roberts also presents a lively history of capital-labor struggles over the past 150 years. I'd suggest reading it along with the more detailed books on working class leadership in the United States by Farrell Dobbs, especially his two-volume series Revolutionary Continuity.
