Book Description
Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who—or what—could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness?
Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been? Why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn't a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead end—a dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household.
In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, there is only one person who dares to be skeptical of a woman who wants to claim the identity of one Bethany sister without revealing the fate of the other. Will he be able to discover the truth?
Customer Reviews:
Her Best Yet.......2007-06-28
I have to say that the ending of the story is what really has me recommending this novel with five stars, for up until the end I was teetering back and forth between, it's great, and it's sort of dull. But the ending is one of those that will have people talking forever, like THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD. Funny then to read another Amazon reviewer complaining about the ending, that it spoiled a great book. Oh well, you can't please everyone.
I admire the way, in all of her books, Lippman drops a sly reference to the novels of the late US girls' novelist Lorena Mattingly Weber. Here it's the trope of the girl whom God made by putting in her eyes with a sooty finger, which Weber used frequently. Lippman's salutes to a great predecessor make me like her even more.
On the issue of "I'm a police," I'm conflicted. OK, so they use that expression (infrequently) on THE WIRE, and on other shows David Simon has a hand in. It still doesn't make it believable. The cops all sound like morons using that expression, and not a one of them escapes it. Otherwise I liked the character of Kevin Infante, except isn't he exactly, down to the smallest detail, the exact same guy as Detective James "Jimmy" McNulty, the "police" Dominic West plays on THE WIRE? It's almost as though Laura is channeling him into her story, otherwise supergrim, to give it a little bit of life. Good for her. You can never have enough Dominic West in my opinion.
Could be Laura Lippman's best.......2007-06-27
I've read 4 or 5 of Laura Lippman's novels, and I think this one stands as her best. You often hear of "psychological thrillers," but too often what that means is you have authors trying to outdo themselves, coming up with more and more sick, twisted villians. So many mysteries are entirely plot-driven and skimp on the character development. Lippman really seems to understand people's motives, behavior, thoughts that haunt them. Her take on the dynamics of the Bethany family is compassionate and wise. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
What the Dead Know: A Novel.......2007-06-27
Sometimes a novel that jumps back and forth in time works and sometimes it doesn't. I found this book very difficult to read and didn't enjoy it at all.
A Literary, Non-linear Mystery.......2007-06-25
Two young sisters, Sunny and Heather Bethany, disappear from a Maryland shopping mall. The case has gone sub-zero until thirty years later, when a woman apprehended for a hit-and-run claims to be Heather. Kevin Infante, the detective assigned to the case, struggles to identify the woman's true identity and, in the process, solve the Bethany case.
The plot unfolds in a non-linear manner that many will find distracting, relying extensively on flashbacks and multiple point-of-view characters. The strength of this narrative structure is that is allows the reader to experience the tragic events from different perspectives and come to know all of the important characters on a very personal level. The weakness of this approach is that the novel lacks a real center or protagonist, forcing the reader to reorient at the start of each chapter to figure out who happens to be narrating.
This was my first Laura Lippman novel but likely will not be my last. The strength of her characterization, skill at building and maintaining suspense, and willingness to stray from the linear format of the usual police procedural impressed me, notwithstanding the noted shortcomings.
Not really a suspense novel -- something else........2007-06-12
As a suspense novel, this is a disappointment. A woman claims to be one of two sisters who have been presumed dead for 30 years. As the story plods along to it's conclusion, so many bits and pieces of irrelevant information are thrown at the reader that the storyline becomes confused and fractured. The characters are generally unlikable and lack depth. To make up for the lack of development, the author assigns them characteristics that are irrelevant to the story (Infante's womanizaing) or annoying (Willoughby's use of language) or both. The victim is manipulative and deceitful. The male characters are portrayed so negatively that one wonders if the author is holding a grudge against the entire species. They are womanizers, closet homosexuals, violent, inept, unethical, arrogant, or a combination of the above. The women don't fare much better (Ms. Lippman may be a bit hung up on sexual orientation issues), although Miriam, the victim's mother is endowed with a certain strength and self-preservation quality. Only Miriam and Dave, the victims' father, come across as real people.
So if you read this book as the story of how losing two children to an unknown fate changes the lives of their parents, the story is more rewarding. But its very close resemblance to a similar case in the same area at the same time is pretty insensitive.
Whichever way you approach the book, you'll have to deal with the author's insistence that all members of law enforcement call themselves "a police." Whatever the author is trying to accomplish with this affected device, its constant repetition becomes just one more pointless distraction. The author should take the advice of her protagonist regarding the use of the English language.
Overall, a disappointing first experience with this author, but I will try another of her books for the sake fo comparison.

Book Description
The leaders of the free world descend on Scotland for an
international conference, and every cop in the country is
needed for front-line duty...except one. John Rebus's
reputation precedes him, and his bosses don't want him
anywhere near Presidents Bush and Putin, which explains
why he's manning an abandoned police station when a call
comes in. During a preconference dinner at Edinburgh
Castle, a delegate has fallen to his death. Accident, suicide,
or something altogether more sinister? And is it linked to a
grisly find close to the site of the gathering? Are the world's
most powerful men at risk from a killer? While the
government and secret services attempt to hush the whole
thing up, Rebus knows he has only seventy-two hours to
find the answers.
Customer Reviews:
Still in form.......2007-06-12
Ian Rankin has brought us another taut and compelling thriller about Edinburgh and the now aging Inspector Rebus. Arriving at the end of his career, Rebus still is driven to find politically inconvenient truths. He even revels in it. And Siobhan, his partner, may be heading in the same career derailing direction as she tries to manage the unfortunate nexus of her personal and professional lives. Well written, evocative of the time and place, and involving. Well worth the 5 stars.
Crackin' good mystery--wonderful writing.......2007-06-12
Wow, Ian Rankin really knows how to construct a storyline that pulls readers in from the first page and keeps them interested to the end. "The Naming of the Dead" is set at the time of the 2005 G8 conference in Scotland and uses the meeting as a plausible backdrop for a number of murders that should be related, but don't seem to be. Great characters here in Detective Inspecter Rebus and his partner as well as virtually all of the supporting members of the story. This is a first-rate mystery with a good dollop of wry humor.
Another John Rebus mystery.......2007-05-30
Ian Rankin has been writing police procedurals featuring his alter ego, John Rebus, for 20 years. Both the writer and the character have grown as they've lived through the life changes that time brings. "Often I am not sure where I end and he begins," said Rankin in an interview. In THE NAMING OF THE DEAD, Rankin's latest Rebus novel, he limns the policeman with a little twist. An aging Rebus is tired, frustrated and more introspective than in any of the previous installments.
Rebus came to law enforcement with only one goal: to stop crimes when possible, to seek justice and to always "do it his way." He was and remains a rogue who is not afraid to bend the rules. This drives his superiors to distraction, especially when the inspector is defying them. He is not above strong-arming suspects or using reliable snitches --- some of whom have been reprised more than once in the series, regardless of their pedigree --- like gangster Morris Gerald Cafferty. Because Rebus never played politics in order to earn promotions, this means that (late in his career) he has nothing to lose. His colleagues learned early on to give him a wide birth, and while acknowledging his brilliant detective work, some of them openly resent him.
Then along came Siobhan Clarke, a rookie who was immediately impressed by the work Rebus does. She was warned over and over not to get too close to him, because the powers-that-be were afraid she would learn his bad habits and hence become "tainted." She didn't listen. The two gravitated toward each other and built a trust that sees them through the darkness they face in their work. They are close friends and grateful that they can confide in one another. They live close by and share a passion for music, a theme reprised in each novel.
Rebus drinks --- sometimes too much, at other times much too much. He lives alone and is rooted to his chair, usually with a bottle of "anything" to get through the night. But his alcoholism doesn't appear to hamper his work. "Rebus paused for a moment...and wondered why his blood was coursing. Answer: he was working. Old-fashioned, dogged police work --- almost as good as a vacation. But then he noticed that his final destination was another pub."
THE NAMING OF THE DEAD opens with the funeral of Rebus's brother, from which he cannot wait to escape. With perfect timing Siobhan reaches him on his cell and tells him to meet her at "Clootie Well," the site of a strange ménage of "offerings" in remembrance of the dead. She has found the jacket of a recent Edinburgh murder victim. Not far from there is "Gleneagles...where the G8 [meeting] control center is." This conference is comprised of international leaders, including President Bush, and has brought law enforcement out in droves. But, despite the security measures and number of delegates, a man falls (is pushed?) to his death from the turret of the castle, on the grounds of the hotel. Rebus is forced to engage in a turf war in order to find the truth.
In addition, both legitimate protesters and those on the side of lunacy are expected to make their various presences known. Some strange characters emerge from the crowd, as do former hippie types like Siobhan's parents who find themselves in the middle of a melee. They have made friends with an odd young woman who seems to float like a ghost in and out of focus. From here the novel becomes complicated --- more political, philosophical, a commentary on family relationships, memories, loss and "lives well lived." But all the subplots are handled with finesse and in Rankin's able hands are pulled together into a satisfying whole.
Ian Rankin's books are tightly plotted and populated with well-drawn characters, some familiar from previous outings and others new on the scene. By the end, readers will agree that this is one of the best books the author has written. They may also wonder if Rebus is ready to "just walk away from his job." Can Rankin eliminate him and perhaps promote Siobhan Clarke to take his place? Or if Rebus is "put out to pasture" he certainly could continue to work with his protégé "behind the scenes." One can only hope that Rankin finds that Rebus is too important a creation to give up his place in the Edinburgh constabulary and fade away.

The Child Is Grown, The Dream is Gone,Comfortably Numb.......2007-05-27
'Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.' Pink Floyd
My favorite nonconformist Detective Inspector Rebus infuriates everyone including his bosses. He is based in Edinburgh, and this is 2005 the week of the G8 summit
Ian Rankin was in Edinburg during the G8 and he conveys the atmosphere to perfection, from the people with ideals, wanting to make a difference for the poorest people in the world through to the disaffected people of the poorest parts of Edinburgh who'd like to make a difference to their own lives. Rankin catches the protestors, the gung-ho attitude of some of the police and the edginess of the crowds. I felt I was there: On occasions I could feel the anxiety. There are contrasts with the situation at Gleneagles, where no expense or detail is spared to protect the leaders and to provide facilities for their staff. The futility of the summit against the backdrop of what was happening in the real world is real and palpable.
The 16th Inspector Rebus novel is a big read set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous weeks in recent Scottish history: the G8. Rankin digs deeper into Rebus's psyche and continues to explore themes of justice and retribution, impermanence, loss and regret. Rebus is the same truculent character he has always been and impending old age - his 60th birthday and consequent retirement - is preying on his mind.
The Naming of The Dead which Rankin took from a ceremony to honour those who had died in Iraq which took place in Edinburgh in 2005. While every cop and his dog is pulling overtime to cope with the daily marches and demonstrations surrounding the summit, Rebus has been sidelined. Who wants him getting close to world leaders? But when a body is discovered in a glade in Auchterarder, Rebus, as the only person left in the office and he is assigned the case and finds himself visiting the G8 after all.
Almost immediately, he clashes with the English police commander in charge of G8 security. Before long, he has everybody's backs up as he explores the possibility that an MP's drop off Edinburgh Castle's ramparts was murder, not suicide, and that a serial killer is preying on convicted rapists harvested from a vigilante website. Rebus' s close friend - Siobhan Clarke - is also at odds with her superiors as she attempts to find the riot cop who clobbered her mother during one of the many demonstrations. She's also getting entangled with Rebus's nemesis, thuggish crime boss Big Ger Cafferty, who is showing an unhealthy interest in her while getting in the way of Rebus's investigations.
The strength of this novel lies in the way that Ian Rankin places the murders and the G8 to his exploration of character: We get more insight into Siobhan Clarke as she struggles with her parental relationships. Rebus is brooding on his age and increasing isolation, thinking about the unexpected death of his brother and the way he has messed up with the rest of his family. And, Rebus, has his love of rock music, Pink Floyd, The Who, U2, the Stones-he has every record and Cd and knows every verse and lyric. He often ties the crime to a lyric of a song. Some have mentioned the length of this novel. It may be overly long, but Ian Rankin was able to keep my attention with the depth of his characterization, and he has tied the plot lines together with a twist. There may be but one Rebus novel left. Policeman in Scotland must retire when they reach age 60. Ian Rankin's almost certainly the best crime novelist writing at the moment and there are few to beat him in any other genre
Rebus, as usual battles with a local crime boss, apolitical boss, his police bosses, a corrupt arms dealer and an arrogant Special Branch official from London. He's formed alliances with a reporter, a computer whiz and several police colleagues who can gather data that he cannot. Technology has become of Rebus's 'life and a web site plays heavily into the three murders. He is technically quite proficient as a detective and Rebus is someone I want on my side. Not much escapes him. Rebus and Siobhan are becoming closer and we can see the emotions in Rebus come to the fore. There is respect and love, but unmentioned as of yet.
Ian Rankin has said in an interview , "At the core of The Naming of the Dead is a pretty basic question: What difference do we make in the world? Rebus is cast as the aging cynic, while his colleague Siobhan is younger and more idealistic. So while Rebus is dismissive of the power of rock stars to change the situation in Africa, Siobhan is hopeful. Can concerts alter world events? Can marches and protests change politicians' minds? Can the individual make a difference? Rebus is beginning to realise that during all the years he's been a cop, and for all the bad people he's put behind bars... crime is always with us. As for my own view on all the above... it's somewhere between Rebus and Siobhan!"
Highly Recommended, Comfortably Numb or Not. prisrob 5-27-07

Book Description
Louisiana cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse has her hands full dealing with every sort of undead and paranormal creature imaginable. And after being betrayed by her longtime vampire love, Sookie must not only deal with a new man in her life-the shapeshifter Quinn-but also contend with the long-planned vampire summit.
The summit is a tense situation. The vampire queen of Louisiana is in a precarious position, her power base weakened by hurricane damage to New Orleans. And there are some vamps who would like to finish what nature started. Soon, Sookie must decide what side she'll stand with. And her choice may mean the difference between survival and all-out catastrophe.
Customer Reviews:
I hated this book.......2007-06-29
Maybe i'm old fashioned, Or I expect to much from the heroine in a book, But i just think that Sookie is becoming hard and mean and unpleasant, It took me two months to read this book because I kept getting angry with the way she thought and the things she did. She was harsh and judgemental and a hypocrite. I also hate the way things turned out with Bill. I don't think i'll read anymore of this series
the seventh Sookie Stackhouse book.......2007-06-29
All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris is the seventh book in her Southern Vampire Mysteries. New Orleans has been devastated by hurricane Katrina. This has eroded the power base of that city's vampire Queen... whom Sookie Stackhouse, heroine of the series, and our favorite mind reading bar maid from small town Louisiana, has promised to help out (for a boat load of money) at a big vampire conference and trial. A lot of people (both supernatural and mortal) would like to do damage to the Queen now that she is down and out. Can Sookie survive what could kill one of the most powerful vampires around?
I enjoyed it, but still thought it to be one of the weaker books in this series. It all centered around one event (though that event is very well handled), and while in the last book the author seemed to be getting the main character's love life straightened out, in this one it gets complicated again. I love these books, but sometimes I think that I am the only fan who does not care which male Sookie ends up with, as long as her love life is settled (and that the male is not Bill ;-)). To me, her love life is one of the least interesting parts of the books - though I realize that her growth as a character can come from her romances.
What DO I love about these books? The world that this author has created is really rich and imaginative. I love the alternate Southern US complete with vampires, shape shifters, mind reading bar maids, and fairy godmothers - all mixed up with just normal folks.
Also, this author is great at characterization (I love her Lily Bard mystery books even more than these Sookie Stackhouse ones) and I love character driven books.
My main concern about his series of books? I have begun to wonder if there is an overall series plot, or if this series is open ended. I personally prefer the former - I want to know that there is a point to the things (especially the bad things) that happen, and that the author has a goal in mind that she is striving to reach.
Vampire fun.......2007-06-27
Charlaine Harris does a wonderful job with this series. Old characters are still in the mix but several new characters make appearances to keep the book interesting. Sookie, as always, makes the book original and fun to read.
By far the one I liked most of all.......2007-06-27
I didn't enjoy much the one that goes before this one, because I don't like Quinn too much, but this book is just amazing, and it really works for me.
It aslo has Bill on it, and I think Sookie is behaving very angrily towards him, because yes, he was following orders in he beginning, but he fell for her in the end.
The book is very well written, the action fast-paced, and you can't believe it when is over and there's no more pages to turn to!!!
I can't wait for the next one!!!!
As always, a delight...........2007-06-27
She's just your average small town Southern girl...who is telepathic, gorgeous, intelligent, and involved with a gamut of interesting individuals who just happen to be demons, vampires, werewolves (and weretigers, etc).

dead funny.......2007-06-27
one of the funniest books I have ever read, so convincing you start to think that brooks is out of his mind.
Just remember: Shoot 'em in the head........2007-06-26
As a child I watched Jonny Quest. The "Curse of Anubis" episode, in which a mummy re-animates to exact revenge on grave robbers, was my first introduction to zombies. It also spawned my first nightmare (or, at least, the earliest one I remember).
I thoroughly enjoyed the Zombie Survival Guide--it's well-researched, creative, and moves right along.
We can argue about whether zombies exist, but anyone who has spent time in sales meetings, schoolboard meetings, political debates, or airplanes is likely to believe that the undead do indeed walk the earth. If you've ever had the nagging feeling that people in the room wanted to eat your brain, you know what I mean.
Even if you don't believe that zombies are real, don't you wish they were?
Your life might depend on this book.......2007-06-18
I have been waiting for almost two decades now for the dead to rise. I truely beleive my calling in life will come when the undead walk. Though I enjoyed this book and I highly recomend it to the untrained, I have been shapening my skills for quite sometime now and this book served as reinforcement. If anybody knows a way of bringing the dead back please do so. I have my weapons, a pick up truck and several kegs of beer ready to go. Thanks
A Very Good Book.......2007-06-18

A Tiger by the Tail.......2007-06-15
Definitely Dead (2006) is the sixth Rural Fantasy novel in the Southern Vampire series, following Dead As a Doornail. In the previous volume, the Merlotte's Bar and Grill staff was going through a bad time. Sam Merlotte was shot in the leg and couldn't tend the bar. The cook was shot in the back by Andy Bellefleur. Sookie Stackhouse was shot in the shoulder and her house was set afire. And the temporary bartender was staked by the customers.
Sookie also had a miserable time attending ceremonies of the Shreveport Were pack. Colonel Flood's funeral was very depressing. Yet the competition for packmaster was even worse. Sookie was starting to dread invitations from Alcide Herveaux.
In this novel, the Pelt family sends word that they would like to talk to Sookie about the disappearance of Debbie. Sookie has already talked to the police and private detectives sent by the family, so she declines the offer. Despite her desire to forget the circumstances of Debbie's death, some things just seem to linger on forever.
Then Quinn shows up at the bar and wants to talk to her after work. He is associated with another memory Sookie wants to forget -- the death of Jackson Herveaux -- but this meeting has nothing to do with the fight for pack leadership. Quinn wants to ask her out on a date, but he also has a message from the Queen of Louisiana about an upcoming conference.
The next night, Sookie receives a phone call from Pam saying that Eric would like to have her come to his office for a visit. Sookie tells Pam to have Eric contact her directly. A furious Eric shows up at her front door sometime later, just before Quinn arrives to pick her up for the date. Quinn confirms the Queen's summoning of Sookie and then the couple go out on the town.
During the date, Sookie and Quinn are attacked by newly bitten Weres, but Sookie fights off her mugger until Quinn can dispose of his own attacker and intervene in her fight. The Shreveport cops are somewhat taken aback by Quinn's handling of the werewolves. At the station house, Detective Coughlin knows her from the Herveaux case, but Sookie also recognizes Cal Myers, Coughlin's new partner, as one of the local Were pack.
A few days later, Mr. Cataliades appears at Sookie's house expecting her to be ready to ride back with him to New Orleans to go through the possessions of her deceased cousin Hadley. Sookie knows nothing about this, but is informed that a messenger had been sent to notify her. They find the body behind a bush in Sookie's yard.
In this story, Sookie is involved in a double wedding of the Bellefleur siblings, she arranges medical treatment for her brother's girlfriend, and the Pelt family shows up at the bar to talk to her. Then Sookie locates a missing boy at the local elementary school. Later Calvin shows up to think her for taking care of his daughter and asks Sookie to marry him.
This busy week is just a prelude for her trip to New Orleans. There she is taken to Hadley's home, which is really a miniature mansion. The next day, she meets the landlady under rather informal conditions. After an incident with a newly risen vampire, Sookie gets to meet the Queen of Louisiana. Then everything gets complicated.
Recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of telepathic waitresses, magical mysteries, and romantic encounters.

Don't Fall Into the Hamilton Trap!.......2007-06-15
Like the previous books in this series, I enjoyed it immensely. However, I've noticed a trend in the series that does not bode well. Like Hamilton's Anita Blake, Sookie is becoming an man magnet - attracting all these fantastically handsome and endowed men who she just can't decide who to be with.
Please, Ms. Harris, go over and read the reviews of Hamilton's latest books. Please don't let Sookie decide on Anitia's answer - sex with anything that moves.
Consider Mary Davidson's Betsy, who has just one guy (still fantastically handsome), who she wants to MARRY! Both Sookie and Betsy have FRIENDS, who they care for and are concerned about. That's good enough.
More please........2007-06-04
This book is excellent - filled with characters that you can only love. This is the sixth book in this series though, and won't make any sense unless you've read those first.
I think characterisation is what raises this book above others of its type (and if you're into fantasy there are more than enough of these types of vampire books floating around at the moment.) Sookie is smart and tough without being rude and annoying (see Undead and Unwed for an example of smart and tough going horribly wrong).
Her boyfriends are three-dimensional and fun to read about. The problems she gets herself into and extracts herself from are interesting and unusual. She also seems to have morals, which is unusual in a book of this type.
So all in all, a fun way to spend an afternoon. I wish it tied up all the loose ends, but you have to give the author some credit - she wants to write a couple more sequels after all.
As an aside, I also like the way there is actually a reason for all those guys going crazy for her - most books just explain it away the otherwise ordinary person's extraordinary charm. Sookie, as it turns out, is descended from a fairy, and thus has got the whole glamour thing going. Hey - it's a heck of a lot better than inexplicable sexual magnetism.
loved this book.......2007-05-31
This was another great installment in the series. I enjoyed it immensely.
The Mighty Quinn.......2007-05-27
Sookie Stackhouse, telepath and barmaid, can't seem to shake the trouble that follows her.
Sookie is summoned by the Queen of the vampires to New Orleans. The Queen and Sookie's cousin, Hadley, were lovers, and then Hadley was murdered leaving Sookie sole inheritor of all her things. She must clean out Hadley's apartment, so the witch Amelia, who owns the place, can rent it out again. The King and Queen of vampires also require Sookie's attendance at a couple vampire events.
While Sookie contends with family matters there are a slew of Supernatural matters that pop up and also demand Sookie's attention. Debbie Pelts family wants to meet with Sookie for some answers on the disappearance of their daughter. While in New Orleans Sookie learns a few secrets that will change her views on her life.
Okay, I love all the Sexy Supernatural Suitors that come 'sniffing' around Sookie, but I am starting to get tired trying to keep all the men straight. For a woman who claims to want a 'normal' life that includes a husband and children, she sure is acting fickle. Quinn, the weretiger, shows up in Merlotte's to date Sookie. Sookie really seems to want this relationship to work out, she is taking things slow, and I hope it does work out. I don't know how she could juggle another suitor or another ex.
This was one of my favorites in the series, I enjoyed it immensely. It was a quick read and for me helped tie up a few loose ends and unanswered questions. I love the creativity these books showcase. The only real problem I had with the book was the way Sookie treats Bill at the end. The last chapter promises that the next book will be even more exciting.

Butcher's Dresden in top form.......2007-06-28
A fantastic series with a complex lead character who wise-cracks his way through one tight situation after another. Highly recommend the whole series.
The Dresden Files, book 7.......2007-06-27
Let me put it as simply and clearly as possible: read this book. In my opinion, it's the best of the series so far.
But really, you should read the whole series, because it's some of the best fiction ever written. Want more details? See my review for book 6.
My first Jim Butcher and it will not be the last .......2007-06-25
I read so many books and most of them are bad or at least somewhere in the middle. I am somewhat astonished to find one that is actually this good.
So we here we have Harry Dresden (Wizard) making money and attempting to keep necromancers from taking over the city. This is apparently business as usual we also have his brother Thomas, his dog mouse and a collection of vampires, werewolves and a possessed skull named bob.
This is a great book and from all appearances a series everyone who is a dark of quirky dark humor sci-fi should give these books a try I know I will.
Dresden files.......2007-06-22
This is a wonderful ride. I have written to the producers of the TV show and told them I can't wait for next season. The books are a little different than the show but I can live with the difference.
DRESDEN!.......2007-06-12
This book is amazing, just like the six books that came before it. There are supposed to be 20 and you really don't have to read them in order, so dont think its the never ending series.

Book Description
There is a glory to life that most people-including believers-never see. In this insightful new book, John Eldredge presents the heart as central to life. Not only is the heart essential; the heart God has ransomed is also good. Building on these foundational truths, Eldredge shows readers why real Christianity is a process of restoration, where the broken parts of our hearts are mended and the captive parts are set free.
Waking the Dead leads listeners to understand how to live from the heart, care for their heart like the treasures of the kingdom, and give from fullness instead of emptiness. This message also shows how living from the heart can energize people to love God and others in a way they've never experienced, revealing to them life's purpose: fighting for the hearts of others.

Lifechanging.......2007-05-17
Respectfully, I simply don't care about all the 'analytical' criticism of John Eldredge, nor do I pay attention to all the overly legalistic slamming of his books. Simply put, God used this book and John to change many things in my life. I recommend this book as one of John's best! And a must read for those that are ready to step out beyond religiosity and into the "Kingdom" life that God wants us to abide in!
An Explosion of LIfe.......2007-04-14
Could it possibly get better than Wild at Heart? The answer is found in the pages of Waking the Dead, yes! Take your walk with God deeper and open and reopen places in your heart that have gone dormant. I have heard comments like "Wild at Heart on Steroids!" I agree 100% if WAH blew your hair back this book will leave you speechless, bald and wanting more...more of God, that is. A must read for men strengthening their walk with the Lord or people just tuning in to the larger story.
Another Home Run for Eldridge.......2007-04-06
John Eldridge continues to say the truth in a way that penetrates to the heart. Next to "Wild at Heart," this was one of the greatest books I've ever read. This books applies scripture to the apathetic, dead-heart culture of Western Christianity. It's a wonderful read!
Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive.......2007-03-25
This book was a gift to my husband and he loves it. He has read it once and has started over reading it again. I will read it when he is through. He never reads something more than once. I would highly recomend this book.
Waking the Dead!.......2007-03-16
With pen in hand and one eye on the tv and the other eye in the books, this is how I envisioned John Eldredge writing this volume. Nevertheless, it is a great effort. I especially like the treatment on our spiritual warfare. By the way, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of my favorite of all times.

Book Description
From America's # 1 bestselling crime writer comes the extraordinary new Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel.
The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, a ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to take on a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace, not only personally and professionally but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsy services to communities lacking local access to modern, competent death investigation technology.
It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run Scarpetta out of town. And that's before the murders and other violent deaths even begin.
A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home. The body of an abused young boy is discovered dumped in a desolate marsh. Meanwhile, in distant New England, problems with a prominent patient at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital begin to hint at interconnections that are as hard to imagine as they are horrible.
Kay Scarpetta has dealt with many brutal and unusual crimes before, but never a string of them as baffling, or as terrifying, as the ones confronting her now. Before she is through, that book of the dead will contain many names-and the pen may be poised to write in her own.
The first name in forensics. The last name in suspense. Once again, Patricia Cornwell proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

Book Description
You will experience psychological impasse many times in your life. During these times, you have the sensation that you’re stuck or paralyzed. You’re convinced that something must change, whether in your work or personal life. Though this feeling is normal, you need to move beyond it. Failure to “get unstuck” can put your career and personal life—as well as the healthy functioning of your team or organization—at risk.
In Getting Unstuck, business psychologist and researcher Timothy Butler offers strategies for moving beyond a career or personal-life impasse—by recognizing the state of impasse, awakening your imagination, recognizing patterns of meaning in your life, and taking action for change.
Drawing on a wealth of stories about individuals who have successfully transitioned out of impasses, Getting Unstuck provides a practical, authoritative road map for moving past your immediate impasse—and defining a meaningful path forward.
Dr. Timothy Butler is a Senior Fellow and the Director of Career Development Programs at Harvard Business School. He teaches career coaching and consults to organizations worldwide on career development issues.
Customer Reviews:
A fresh approach with useful exercises.......2007-06-27
Tim Butler's latest book addresses takes a creative approach to "getting unstuck", which he calls "impasse," in a clear, engaging and enjoyable read for coaches and clients alike.
Butler states that shifting to a new understanding of ourselves `is a "dropping down" into more imaginative and less conditioned ways of looking at ourselves and the world. We shift from cognitive analysis based on an old mental model to information that comes from giving our essence a chance to speak in the fresh language of image and metaphor. . . A new life vision has to come from employing all aspects of our consciousness . . . It has to arise from deep intuition.' [...]., includes access to audio downloads of some of his image gathering exercises.
This practical book includes exercises to help clients identify career interest patterns as well as "dynamic tensions," goals or motivations that may appear to be contradictory. Readers can assess themselves based on ten interest patterns, based on Butler's research. The next step is to explore the role of three social motivators: power, affiliation, and achievement and to identify which are most dominant.
By working through these exercises, clients assemble a powerful roadmap of life interests, motivators, themes, and dynamic tensions. Much of the books accessibility comes from the numerous examples of how clients resolved dynamic tensions and moved towards new, more fulfilling careers. Clients will find value in these examples and exercises and coaches will enjoy adding this creative approach to their coaching repertoire.
Boy Did I need this!.......2007-06-08
I have just started this book, but it has hit home already. The Deep Dive exercises are really good and helps you resolve things in your life. I Love the way the book takes you from one place to another to clear up issues in your life. I think this is a must read for all.
Probably best explored with guidance..........2007-04-04
There comes a time (or many times, actually) in everyone's life when things appear to be at a dead end. You know you don't want to be where you're at, but you're in a quandary about how to move on. That's the subject of the book Getting Unstuck: How Dead Ends Become New Paths by Timothy Butler. If you're willing to work his process and exercises, you may well find that "new path" to take you to the next level.
Contents:
Part 1 - Impasse: Facing Crisis; Feeling Stuck and Doubting Ourselves; Opening Up and Letting Go; Shifting to a New Understanding
Part 2 - Vision: Our Deepest Interests (The First Pattern in the Carpet); Learning to Let Our Passions Guide Us; Power, People, and Achievement (Three Interwoven Patterns); Mapping Our Insights (Patterns in the Sand)
Part 3 - Getting Unstuck: Moving from Impasse to Action; Living at the Border
Appendixes: Continuing the Journey (An Annotated Bibliography); A Note on Impasse and Depression; Scoring the One Hundred Jobs Exercise
Notes; Index; About the Author
Butler is a researcher and business psychologist who works with people who have hit a "dead end" in their life. Many of the stories in the book involve students who have gone to business school, have a number of options in front of them, but nothing seems quite right. His approach to getting unstuck is to allow the inner thoughts and passions to direct us towards what we probably already know the answer to be, but we just haven't tuned into it. Many of these exercises are covered in sidebar entries called "deep dives". These sidebars go into detail about how an exercise works and how to do it. For instance, "free attention" is the technique of allowing your focus to reside on a particular part of the body, letting the sensations and feelings wash over you without judgement. When your mind wanders, you've lost your free attention and need to refocus on the body part. This then shifts to focus on breathing, and the goal is to let emotions run their course and learn from them. Another technique is paying attention to images that form in your mind. These images can often be formed from deeper core feelings and emotions, and taking the time to reflect and analyze them can cast light on your situation and point to a new path. Probably one of the most in-depth exercises is the 100 Jobs list. You choose 12 jobs from a list of 100 that appeal to you on an emotional basis. Scoring the exercise involves categorizing the types of attributes that make up those jobs. By grouping and classifying the different underlying traits, you'll see trends such as leadership, persuasion, coaching, etc. These trends can then be used to examine your direction and make corrections...
On the whole, the ideas are solid. I can see where working through the process could lead to dramatic changes that might not be explored by a more cursory examination of your life. But while the book is designed to be used on your own, I think it'd work best if you had someone skilled in these techniques working with you. It's hard to be objective about your own mind, and an external viewpoint would help keep things focused. I also think that the material would appeal most to business professionals who are at a career crisis. Most of the material is slanted towards job-related issues, and the stories are largely about college and grad school students. While anyone could use these ideas in various areas of their lives, I think the "average" person might find it all a bit daunting...
How to avoid a dead end or to find a better path to follow .......2007-03-11
Well before reading the final chapter of this book, I concluded that Timothy Butler is both a relentless empiricist (i.e. being keenly observant of human experience, especially his own) and a relentless pragmatist (i.e. leveraging this experience to apply lessons learned in terms of what works...and what doesn't). In the Introduction he focuses on the six phases of what he characterizes as "The Cycle of Impasse." They are (1) the arrival of the [given] crisis and impasse, (2) its deepening and the attendant re-emergence of unresolved issues, (3) the dropping of old assumptions and the opening up to new information, (4) the shift to a new way of understanding our situation, (5) the greater recognition of deep patterns of our personality, and eventuaolly (6) the decision to take concrete action." Once having carefully presented the "what," Butler then focuses almost all of his attention on the "how" of "getting unstuck."
It is important to keep in mind that as Butler duly acknowledges, crises vary (sometimes significantly) in terms of their relative importance; also, impasses also vary in terms of their nature and extent; moreover, "getting unstuck" from one crisis does not mean that it will never recur; in addition, most people find themselves struggling to cope with more than one crisis at a time; finally, and obviously, its is highly advisable to prevent a crisis, if at all possible, and thus eliminate the need to get "unstuck" from one.
The subtitle suggests another interesting aspect of this book's appeal: "How Dead Ends Become New Paths." I am among those who believe that every problem and, especially, every failure offers an invaluable learning opportunity. Long ago, Jack Dempsey suggested that "champions get up when they can't." More recently Warren Bennis and Robert Thomas, in Geeks and Geezers and then in Leading for a Lifetime, assert that most (if not all) great leaders - at one time - experienced a "crucible" which forged qualities of character they would not otherwise develop. In Authentic Leadership and then in True North, Bill George makes essentially the same point. With all due respect to Yogi Berra (reputed to have suggested that "When you get to a fork in the road, take it"), what seem to be "dead ends" can become "new paths" if - huge if -- we can summon the courage and sustain the determination to take "concrete action."
To this last point, Butler insists - and I agree - that "our lives do not change without action. The impasse crisis has its resolution in a decision to make specific choices that change our day-to-day reality...Know what the action needs to be, and actually performing it, is what seals the cycle of learning and change and allows us to move forward."
I commend Butler for providing three valuable appendices: "Continuing the Journey" (an annotated bibliography), "A Note on Impasse and Depression" (differences between symptoms of clinical depression and symptoms at impasse), and "Scoring the One Hundred Jobs Exercise" (a self-diagnostic to accompany an exercise in Chapter 4). All of those who read this book find themselves "stuck" from time to time. On occasion, the "impasse" is minor and only temporary (e.g. missing several days at work because of having the flu). On other occasions, the situation is much more serious and seems hopeless, or at least daunting (e.g. an extended period of unemployment as bills pile up). Butler seems genuinely determined to help his readers cope effectively with all manner of crises, especially those which may seem hopeless. Obviously, it remains for each reader to determine the value of this book to her or his own circumstances.
When thinking about the many benefits that Butler's book offers, I am reminded of a prayer generally thought to have been composed by Reinhold Niebuhr: "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Book Description
What happens to our loved ones when they die?
Is there a heaven?
Is there a true connection and communication between the living and the dead?
Allison DuBois invites us into her world where she delivers messages from our lost loved ones. She convinces us that those who have passed away are constantly with us, providing comfort, love, and support. They are as eager to reach us as we are to stay connected with them.
But the dead have a language of their own. They communicate through signs, dreams, songs, coincidences, and messages delivered in unexpected ways. Allison takes us on an odyssey of these signs how to recognise them, how to read them, and how to interpret them. In these pages, you will meet people who have had both heartbreaking and heartwarming communication with the other side, providing comforting proof that our deceased loved ones stay with us and continue to share in the joys of our lives.

Spirit Lifting.......2007-06-12
I have never watched the show Medium and ran across the book as a recommendation. I am an open-minded individual so gave it the chance. I was not disappointed. It gives people hope, especially those who have lost. I am glad I spent my money and dedicated my time to read it. Well worth it!
fabulous.......2007-06-08
This book was fabulous if you have a fascination about why spirits contact mediums. It was also interesting to read how Allison relates the tv-show "Medium" to her daily life.
Simple reading.......2007-05-16
Her style of writing is very simple, almost boring, but the book got 4 stars because the topic was interesting. It would have gotten 5, except for the fact that it sounded like she had written a previous book (she only mentions it about 9 times)and maybe she was all talked out. Anyway, she has an interesting life and it's a good read.
easy, interesting read!.......2007-05-15
I highly recommend it! It was very entertaining and interesting! Great job to Mrs. DuBois!
Jerry's.......2007-05-14
The real Allison DuBois is more believable than the tv program. I am already an enthusiast of John Edwards, Sylvia Brown, James VanPaugh, and locals Thomas Winlow, Victor Paruta and others. Though not a severely technical as Adam's book, Dream Healer, it rates up there with the rest.
