5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource!!.......2003-08-01

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Resource.......2002-02-18

This is a terrific and necessary resource for anyone involved with the design or renovation of a child care setting. The author has clearly and concisely poured into the book her considerable knowledge and understanding of child care facilities, her passionate beliefs, and her attention to the details of good design. Her knowledge of child development is evident in all of her ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2002-01-05

This must be the best book that exist about designing Child Care Center. It covers everything, but the most important is the focus the autor made on the children. This book is a must for every architect or people interested in design of this kind of buildings, specially if he/she is really interested in children well being.
The only but is that for the quality of its content, this book deserves a better paper and color pictures. (a 0 star here for MacGrow-Hill).
Probably this book is call to change the way a day care is seen today.

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited, exceeds expectations.......2000-12-25

Preeminent authority on design for child care, Anita Rui Olds consummated a lifetime of deep concern and research into the needs of children with the publication of this magnum opus. Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.

More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)

The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.

Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

Book Description

Sitting in stillness, the practice of meditation, and the cultivation of awareness are commonly thought to be the preserves of Hindus and Buddhists. Martin Laird shows that the Christian tradition of contemplation has its own refined teachings on using a prayer word to focus the mind, working with the breath to cultivate stillness, and the practice of inner vigilance or awareness. But this book is not a mere historical survey of these teachings. In Into the Silent Land, we see the ancient wisdom of both the Christian East and West brought sharply to bear on the modern-day longing for radical openness to God in the depths of the heart. Laird's book is not like the many presentations for beginners. While useful for those just starting out, this book serves especially as a guide for those who desire to journey yet deeper into the silence of God. The heart of the book focuses on negotiating key moments of struggle on the contemplative path, when the whirlwind of distractions or the brick wall of boredom makes it difficult to continue. Laird shows that these inner struggles, even wounds, that any person of prayer must face, are like riddles, trying to draw out of us our own inner silence. Ultimately Laird shows how the wounds we loathe become vehicles of the healing silence we seek, beyond technique and achievement. Throughout the language is fresh, direct, and focused on real-life examples of people whose lives are incomparably enriched by the practice of contemplation.

5 out of 5 stars contemplative.......2007-03-26

I have read many books on contemplative prayer practice and I beleive this book is the most concise and well written one I have read. It is difficult to describe spiritual realities with spoken language but the author does a good job of doing this.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Presentation of Contemplative Prayer Practice.......2007-01-24

Martin Laird gives an authentic presentation of Contemplative Prayer Practice within the Christian tradition. This presentation portrays a deep openness of heart and mind from the inside out. Laird offers a wealth of knowledge related to Christian contemplative practice. His own interiority and experience shines throughout the book. The book offers the rich insights of other contemplative traditions (Eastern) but it is clearly rooted in the heart of the vast landscape of the Christian contemplative lineage where the divine/human relationship soaks in silence, nature, and Word. The mingling together of these contemplative nuances form a language of ancient wisdom that can be understood and accessible today. Each chapter in Laird's book has an invitational and creative title which often is not found in books of this nature: 1) Parting the Veil: The Illusion of Separation from God, 2) The Wild Hawk of the Mind, 3) The Body's Call to Prayer, 4) The Three Doorways of the Present Moment; the Way of the Prayer Word, 5) The Riddles of Distration, 6) From Victim to Witness: Practicing with Affliction, 7) The Liturgy of Our Wounds, and his Epilogue: Who Am I? A Tale of Monastic Failure. The book brings to life the teachings of the desert abbas and ammas. Laird quotes Meister Eckhart on p. 23 of the book: "Meister Eckhart says, "The noblest entertainment in this life is to be silent and let God work and speak within." Many would probably disagree with that statement in today's world. The book is for the beginner, the intermediate, and advanced practitioners alike. *Into the Silent Land* takes the reader into the landscape of the Psalmist's heart: "Let us live every moment in "applying our hearts to wisdom." (Psalm 90:12)

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual contemplation.......2007-01-11

This is a very readable, fairly concise guide to the contemplative life. The author cites many sources and covers almost 2,000 years of writings, and his stories relate well to the subject. In order to really benefit, the book should probably be read through a number of times. For someone who wants to connect with God, it is a good primer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Beginners !.......2007-01-10

Great Guide for Beginners! Very Simple Instructions, and Good Explanations of the Ground-lay of the "Silent Land." Instructions are again repeated as from a gentle teacher, so that the reader understands, so that the info can saturate.... I recommend the book for the Christian who wants to go deeper in his communion with Christ Jesus.

Book Description

This scholarly exploration of the borderlands between science and fantasy features four complete works by the redoubtable Charle Fort (1874-1932): The Book of the Damned, Lo!, Wild Talents, and New Lands. All concern the bizarre phenomena unexplained by traditional science that the author spent the better part of three decades documenting: flying saucers, telekinesis, sudden showers of fish from the sky, stigmata, poltergeists, and spontaneous combustion (to name a few). Fort's florid style and freakish subjects were much critiziced by his contemporaries, but he was defended and admired by an equal number of readers, including such noteworthies as Theodore Dreiser, Clarence Darrow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Stimulating, bewildering, and intoxicating, this intellectual tour de force is a must for lovers of science fiction as well as science facts.

5 out of 5 stars Fossils in meteorites?.......2004-12-12

From page 80 in Fort's "The Book Of The Damned" published in 1919: "Dr. Hahn said he had found fossils in meteorites." Fred Hoyle, the British astronomer, published in his 1984 book "The Intelligent Universe," photographs of fossils in a meteorite. Of course, in 1996 NASA announced finding fossils in a meteorite. What took NASA so long?

Fort's point: What doesn't fit in is damned. What other strange phenomena have been excluded from respectable consideration? Fort tells of fish and stones falling from the clouds, strange craft cruising the skies in the 1890's, lights moving beneath the surface of the sea, vitrified (melted) stone forts in Scotland, disappearing stars, red rain, unknown planets crossing the sun, and sea serpents.

Fort's style of extreme and fantastic hyperbole makes for difficult reading until the reader allows his thinking to slide into the Fortean mode. Of course, thats what Fort had in mind all along, to stretch the reader's thinking to the point where he will at least consider what others have ignored.

5 out of 5 stars Hegelian philosophy + ostentatious prose = Charles Fort.......2002-08-01

No author has had a greater intellectual influence on me than Charles Fort. As an eight year old I had no idea what he was talking about, but I was enchanted by his writing style. When I read Fort today it is for literary enjoyment. Inimitable writers are, unfortunately, too often imitated. However, an ardent Fortean could identify a Fortean paragraph as easily as he could identify his mother in a photograph. Here are some excerpts, selected at random, from this behemoth text. If you find the following samples unpalatable, you're going to hate this book:

page 38 - So Science functions for and serves society at large, and would, from society at large, receive no support, unless it did so divert itself or dissipate and prostitute itself. It seems that by prostitution I mean usefulness.

page 324 - That our existence, a thing within one solar system, or supposed solar system, is a stricken thing that is mewling through space, shocking able-minded, healthy systems with the sores on its sun, its ghastly mooons, its civilizations that are all broken out with sciences; a celestial leper, holding out doddering expanses into which charitable systems drop golden comets?

page 389 - We assemble the data. Unhappily, we shall be unable to resist the tempation to reason and theorize. May Super-embryology have mercy upon our own syllogisms. We consider that we are entitled to at least 13 pages of gross and stupid erors. After that we shall have to explain.

page 643 - As to data that we shall now take up, I say to myself: "You are a benign ghoul, digging up the dead, old legends and superstitions, trying to breath life into them. Well, then, why have you neglected Santa Claus?"

What use is Fort today? Most published Forteans (Keel, Coleman) are on-site researchers, methodically tracking down and experiencing that of which they write. The only place Charles Fort traveled to was the library.

Fort would think that his writings and opinions were above classification, and if anyone is, he is probably the one. But we have to connect all writers to something. I see alot of Hegel in his writings, particularly in his dialectical analyses and his fixation on negation. Hegel's famous quote - The whole of philosophy resembles a circle of circles - is hearkened to in Fort's famous circle quotation. But this is no philosophy text. You could boil down Fort's philosophy in Book of Damned to a concise three pages. Yet Fort reiterates, and rephrases, and belabors. And it's excruciatingly enjoyable. If you don't like being told the same thing over and over again, albeit wittiily and elaborately and incorrigibly, don't read this book.

I treat Fort like I treat the Bible. I don't mean that irreverently (I happen to think the Bible is pretty holy meself). Open the 1100+ page book anywhere, and read a chapter. Be enlightened, be bemused, be annoyed. Maybe the response is the key. Fort had his pet theories, and they are absurd. But he was onto something. An absoluteness I think. He lambasts religion, and he really lays into science. This may offend people, but theories are meant to be attacked, aren't they? And that is the primary Fortean dogma.

Forteans are a motley and diverse bunch. Yes, you'll find UFO passages, animal mutilations, falling frogs. To me, the details are only significant in volume. If you decide to read this book, leave your pet theories outside of the covers.

I like to believe that Fort was searching for the Absolute, even if the Absolute turns out to be completely absurd to the human perspective. If absolute theories exist, it might only be our ignorance and prejudice which make them absurd.

Oh I could say that everybody should read this book. But the fact is most people won't get through the first chapter. This book is an artifact in many ways, and was written for people with certain intellectual and literary backgrounds. If that sounds a bit snobbish, so be it. Fort was such a snob that he kept his circle of friends exceedingly small, and treated well-respected ideas like lepers. Today, I encounter this book much like I did almost twenty years ago. Like a child, full of wonder, and ready to believe and disbelieve anything.

5 out of 5 stars Mind open, tongue in cheek, questions ready........2001-04-16

It would be foolish, really, to try and write a review that in some way offers more information than the one by Jesper Sampaio. And so, I don't intend to. I merely want to offer a few instructions and my own opinion.

Instruction number one: don't take it at face value. Many of the explanations Fort offers for any number of unexplained phenomena are intentionally fantastic, sarcastic or ironic. It is, I think, part of his overall effort to get people to question the "conventional" explanation. Many scientific explanations, after all, simply fit the facts available and, in that respect, are no more or less valid than some of Fort's.

Instruction number two: get ready for rather turgid prose. I personally like the way Fort writes, but it can be tough to get through for the uninitiated. Remember that he was writing in the early part of the century.

Instruction number three: don't be afraid to jump around. I know it's best to read these books "back to back" as it were, but it's not necessary. If you get tired of a particular avenue of discussion just jump ahead. Skip to a different book if you want. Part of my enjoyment of these books was being able to pick the volume up whenever the mood struck me and simply open to any chapter. Sure you miss some of the overarching themes, but it makes it much easier to enjoy.

So, for what it's worth, here's my opinion:

This is a really great primer for Forteana and unexplained phenomena. It is also a sharp and witty condemnation of blind trust in ANY particular system of belief and of the scientific view in particular. The scientific view receives particular condemnation, I think, because of the tendency of those within the scientific community to speak in absolutes. Science, says Fort, has a nasty habit of drawing lines in the sand and saying "this is the way things are" and condemning anyone who says different. The Earth is the center of the universe and rocks don't fall from the sky. Eventually the line gets redrawn, but Fort suggests that perhaps scientists should have just as healthy a sense of skepticism about their own fields of study as they do about the more fantastic things they habitually reject.

Enjoyable by believers and skeptics alike, the Complete Works of Charles Fort is both entertaining and thought provoking.

4 out of 5 stars Reading is one of the things you should do for yourself........2000-04-05

It is not infrequent to hear establishment scientists label unconventional research work as 'pseudo-science', especially if the researcher in question lacks special academic credentials or institutional support and if his discoveries and conclusions go against current dogmas. But when someone's heresy goes beyond all institutional seriousness and loses its last grain of prim, scientific respectability, then even stronger expressions, such as the term "Fortean", will have to be flung at the anathematized one.

But who was this man called Fort whom every good scientist must abjure in a solemn oath? Well, historically speaking, Fort was (I suppose) the first writer to give systematical attention to a great number of phenomena generally termed 'anomalous' (in the areas of ufology, cryptozoology, parapsychology and many others) and has been a source of inspiration for several writers and - it must be admitted - some crackpot researchers. But is that all? No, definitely not, but in the case of Fort other people's opinions (including my own) will be of almost no avail to the uninitiated, so there is only one answer to the question above: Read Fort's books, and form your own opinion about the man and his work.

That's what I did myself: I got the Dover omnibus volume of his complete works to pollute my innocent mind with, and - ensconced in an old and spacey rocking chair - read every line of it. Now Fort is difficult reading: his style is full of surprises, allusions to subjects touched upon hundreds of pages back, preciously ironical remarks, creative metaphors and analogies (mostly incomplete or faulty, but nevertheless very funny), and - of course - a lot of philosophy: his weak side, if it be permitted to say so. Each book was meant to be read from first to last page, no skipping, because the facts exposed, though apparently whimsical and haphazard, really follow a careful order of presentation.

Fort's works are valuable for the extremely hard-gathered information they present (you can decide for yourself what to do with it) and for the way universally accepted ideas and concepts are challenged and played with for the sake of intellectual amusement (can't scientists see that? haven't they got the slightest bit of sense of humor? in his last book, however, Fort takes on a bit more of the grave air of the parapsychologist, and so comes close to resembling a 'true scientist'). Fort is someone you have a great time reading no matter how much you disagree with him, and that's not a small accomplishment, I think.

Actually, one may say that the act of listening does not imply being in agreement or disagreement with the speaker. And so there should be no hard-felt need for the reader to accept or oppose Fort's views as such. These are inalienable from the man and his unique writing style, and so may be comfortably left where they are. Below are a few typically 'Fortean' quotes, extracted from the omnibus volume reviewed:

- "Sciences are islands of seeming stability in a cosmic jelly."(p.335) - "All knowledge is (or implies) the degradation of something. One who learns of metabolism, looks at a Venus, and realizes she's partly rotten. However, she smiles at him, and he renews his ignorance. All things in the sky are pure to those who have no telescopes."(p.547) - "To have an opinion one must overlook something."(p.559) - "There would not be so much science, if people had good memories."(p.576) - "So, like everybody else, I don't know what to think, but, rather uncommonly, I know that."(p.617) - "Now and then admirers of my good works write to me, and try to convert me into believing things that I say. He would have to be an eloquent admirer, who could persuade me into thinking that our present expression is not a least a little fanciful; but just the same I have labored to support it. I labor like workers in a beehive, to support a lot of vagabond notions."(p.641) - "If there has never been, finally, a natural explanation of anything, everything is, naturally enough, the supernatural."(p.655) - "Every scientist who has played a part in any developing science has, as can be shown, if he's been dead long enough, by comparing his views with more modern views, deceived himself."(p.669) - "In the oneness of allness, I am, in some degree or aspect, guilty of, or infected with, or suffering from, everything that I attack."(p.828) - "To this day it has not been decided whether I am a humorist or a scientist."(p.850)

Book Description

In The Journey, Alister McGrath has created a map for Christians who wish to explore and enrich their spirituality. Using examples from the lives of renowned Christians, such as Martin Luther, John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, J. I. Packer, C. S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and John Stott, he shows readers how to overcome the obstacles that block their journey to God: doubt, distraction, temptation, tiredness, emptiness, and low self-esteem.

The Journey is an essential book for any Christian, whether they are new to the faith or have been traveling on the Christian pathway for years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great little book that introduces Christian themes and Lit........2001-01-03

Alister McGrath gives us a narrative that introduces some of the major aspects of Christian life (which may certainly include struggles). He reminds us about the bibical principles to live a God-centered life by drawing parallels from Ireal's experience and providing for us some of the great Christian literatures from the past. Therefore, Christian living is a "journey" which was not meant to be done alone. God not only provides us with fellowship, but also with excellent examples from Christians that has gone before us in the journey.

He's technique is excellent! His weaving of Christian literature from evangelical leaders (such as J.I. Packer, Stott, Bunyan, Luther, and many more) is very helpful in dealing with problems posed.

McGrath give us an outline and suggestions for further growth. He's main point: yes, read Scripture to see how God deals with his people, but also read Christian literature...it helps! Of course, McGrath doesn't say this bluntly but his smooth narrative is very convincing, encouraging, and refreshing.

Forget the "Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul"...reading this book is much more satisfying. (just my opinion =) )

4 out of 5 stars Very detailed guide to Napa.......2001-01-29

This book provides an enormously detailed, accurate guide to Napa Valley. You can literally move from building to building along the main roads of Napa and know what sits in each one when using this guide. It provides phone numbers, hours of operation, and all that one needs to enjoy a visit to Napa. It's almost TOO detailed... if I had one complaint it would be that I wished the authors would provide some more hints on which of the many places they describe so well are REALLY worth a visit! A great companion during a trip to Napa, though.

4 out of 5 stars Best for self guided Napa tour. Quips were great!.......1999-10-10

This book is a must for a self-guided Napa tour. The quips about wineries provided a view not oftern seen. Comments about the smaller producing wineries were true and personal. We met the winemaker, owner, the bookkeeper and cashier at Dutch Henry only to learn they are the only employees. The information in the book is helpful to find not only wineries but eateries too. We even dined at the French Laundry. Ask about the waiting list! Don't leave home without this book!

Book Description

With great spiritual insight and unparalleled scholarship, Dr. Taitetsu Unno--the foremost authority in the United States on Shin or Pure Land Buddhism--introduces us to the most popular form of Buddhism in Japan. Unique among the various practices of Buddhism, this "new" form of spiritual practice is certain to enrich the growing practice of Buddhism in the United States, which is already quite familiar with Zen and Tibetan traditions. River of Fire, River of Water is the first introduction to the practice of Pure Land Buddhism from a trade publisher and is written for readers with or without prior experience with it.

The Pure Land tradition dates back to the sixth century c.e., when Buddhism was first introduced in Japan. Unlike Zen, its counterpart which flourished in remote monasteries, the Pure Land tradition was the form of Buddhism practiced by common people. Consequently, its practice is harmonious with the workings of daily life, making it easily adaptable for seekers today. Despite the difference in method, though, the goal of Pure Land is the same as other schools--the awakening of the true self.

Certain to take its place alongside great works such as Three Pillars of Zen, The Miracle of Mindfulness, and Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind--River of Fire, River of Water is an important step forward for American Buddhism.

Excellent English translation and interpretation of Buddhist prophets. The author enhances the understanding of Buddhism with modern day examples applied to ancient Buddhist philosophy and thought.

5 out of 5 stars Reading for Naturalness.......2006-07-03

There are religious books you read for information and there are books that you not so much read as wade in them, the way after a long hike, you take your shoes off and wade in the cool waters of a mountain stream. This is one of those books. Taitetsu Unno takes up different topics, at random it seems, and passes them through Shin Budhism's unhurried, all-accepting gaze. When so many of the world's major religions seem to have spun off violent and hate-filled offspring, it is wonderful to learn about a way of humility that recognizes and can live at ease with human limits, a way of trust and surrender that does not relinquish the duty to act responsibly. This small book doesn't tell you about faith and gratitude and compassion as much as it gradually reveals to you its eternal presence in you.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction To Shin Buddhism.......2004-01-06

(4.75 Stars)

I need and want to read more about Pure Land Buddhism as I can't yet put into words what Shin Buddhism is. I know when I read reviews I like to fully know what the book is about etc and to be honest I cannot fully explain it, but I really enjoyed this.

I was unfamiliar with Shin Buddhism and actually after reading this book I want to know more.

I at first thought that Amida Buddha was a Christ type figure and that this sect of Buddhist worship him in that same way that Christians worship Christ.

Taitetsu Unno is a great story teller. I love the way this book is written. He compares aspects of Shin Buddhism with like or comparable aspects of other religions to help you understand. This is done in a non-competitive way and non-judgmental way that is so refreshing and helpful that you really get a good understanding of the concepts, ideas and feel of Shin.

Taitetsu Unno shares with the reader his own experiences, thoughts and feelings and I felt welcome on each page. The personal stories, examples and tales really helped me to understand with my head and heart - and it left me wanting to know more and wanting to share and be part of the namu-amida-butsu.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent beginning.......2003-05-07

Rev. Taitetsu Unno is part of an esteemed family of Shin Buddhist teachers, priests, and scholars. So it's not surprising that someone of his background should create one of the best introductory texts on the subject.

This book's title comes from a Pure Land parable which encapsulates the premise of faith in "other power", namely that of Amida Buddha, which can best be described as the 'ur-Buddha' from whom all Dharmic wisdom and compassion springs. Specifically, Rev. Unno is writing here about the Jodo Shinshu school, one of the great schools of Japanese Buddhism which sprang from the Kamakura period of that nation's history, in the 12th and 13th centuries. Jodo Shinshu is, in fact, one of the largest sects of Mahayana Buddhism, but in the West is little-known outside of the Japanese ethnic community. But despite this ethnic concentration, the Shin faith is more or less a "Buddhism for Joe Average", irrespective of ones' skin color or land of origin.

The book is very well-written, and also well-organized given the amount...and often, complexity...of the information it imparts. Rev. Unno deftly opens up the teachings of Jodo Shinshu to anyone who might wish to learn, or for that matter might simply be curious. He deals excellently with both the historical perspective of this school, as well as the more complex philosophical issues posed by the Nembutsu-faith as well as its place in the mainstream of Mahayana thought.

Shin Buddhism is truly a faith that anyone can follow, without the complexities of what is referred to as "the path of difficult practice". And likewise, "River of Fire, River of Water" provides an uncomplex point of entry into this rich and enriching path. For anyone starting down this path, I would have to say that this...along with Dr. Kenneth Tanaka's "Ocean"...makes for an excellent point from which to begin. I recommend it unconditionally.

5 out of 5 stars Dharma for the Rest of Us.......2001-11-22

Reading this book is the next best thing to participating in a seminar conducted by Dr. Unno. His gifts as a story teller are prodigious and extend the long tradition of transmitting the Dharma through allegory, humor and personal disclosure. One does not have to take the story of Dharmakara to be that of a literal historical personage, or even to be a Pure Land follower, to benefit from Dr. Unno's explication of the White Path parable. All skillfully delivered teachings reach us exactly where we are. Dr. Unno is a master of this art.

If you are interested in everyday Dharma, read this book... and also "Everyday Suchness" by Rev. Gyomay Kubose. Both of these books go to the heart of what it means to be a human being.

This is by far the best and most complete source on Atlantis in print. Steiner explains all, down to the obscurist details.

If anyone is interested in the mystery of Atlantis, Steiner is the best person to go to. It's like you're already there when reading!

I would forget about all the hokey, new age spiritualistic books out there on Atlantis and go straight to the man from headquarters!

Book Description

Egyptologist Stephen S. Mehler has spent over 30 years researching the answers to these questions: • Was there a advanced prehistoric civilization in ancient Egypt? • Who were the people who built the great pyramids? • Who carved the Great Sphinx? • Did the pyramids serve as energy devices and not as tombs for kings?

Mahler believes the answers are "Yes!" An indigenous oral tradition still exists in Egypt, he has been able to uncover and study it with the help of a living master of this tradition, Abd'El Hakim Awyan. He has also been given permission to share these teachings -presented heretofore in fragments by other researchers-to the Western World, teachings that unfold a whole new understanding of ancient Egypt.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "The Secrets of Water": the Water-Man.......2002-04-22

Stephen Mehler's research, spanning over 30+ years, indicate that whenever there is a so-called "Power Place", sacred site or Vortex on Earth - three things will always be found. Flowing water, a source of natural crystal, and igneous rock (itself a source of crystal) - these three elements are found at every major site in Egypt, not by any accident. His major theme in the book is that the ancient Khemitian civilization, over 10,000 years old, was based on ANOTHER Nile River, in what is today called the Western Desert. The ancient Khemitians drilled miles of tunnels through limestone bedrock to divert this river to the present Nile Valley, and also built huge above ground aqueducts and channels to bring water to the sites. EVERY Per-Neter had water flowing into it to create acoustic harmonic resonance with each other . . . tremendous amounts of energy could be created this way.

This completely concurs with the evidence and functioning of the subterranean section of the Great Pyramid.

My copy of "The Land of Osiris" is highlighted thoughout. It is packed with solid new information.

Stephen's indigenous teacher, Abd'El Hakim Awyan, stated "Follow the water". Absolute truth.

5 out of 5 stars Keeper of the indigenous traditions?.......2002-04-06

Abd'El Hakim Awyan is a tourist guide. Period. Albeit an excellent guide, I personally would be hesitant about the accuracy of Hakim's information. This comes from years of living in Egypt and observing how these "indigenous masters" work and how they interact with foreigners, as well as how they acquire their information about various topics. Besides, the indigenous peoples of Egypt are not the Egyptian villagers who live infront of the Sphinx. The true indigenous people are the rare bedouin tribes still roaming the deserts such as the Hamitic Beja tribes or the Berbers of the Siwah tribe....

5 out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air.......2002-03-04

If you want a fresh understanding of Ancient Egypt, The Land of Osiris is your best guide. In this well-written book Stephen Mehler provides a new perspective of this ancient culture distilled from his own research spanning over 30 years plus the invaluable knowledge provided by Abd'el Hakim Awyan, a master of the oral indegenous tradition. Rather than Egyptology with its western outsider bias, Stephen believes that we need a new tradition, a new paradigm, which incorporates this living indigenous knowledge and chooses to call it Khemitology. I believe this is a bold and necessary departure because the dead weight of mainstream Egyptology simply does not answer the questions that need to be answered. To put it in different terms, who were the ancient Khemitians and what did they know? Stephen's book is an introduction to answering those questions.

So what does Stephen give us. As a matter of fact, there are many items of fact and deduction but I will suggest a few. He gives us the land of BU WZR, the Land of Osiris and what it entailed. He asserts that the culture may stretch as far back as 65,000 years ago. He defines and clearly delinates the difference between a place of power (per-neter), a place of burial (per-ka) and a house of worship (per-ba). In the process he corroborates Christopher Dunn's theory that the Great Pyramid was a place of power. He shows us a clear connection between the Maya and the Khemitians. From satellite-based maps he demonstrates the bed of the Ur-Nile or proto-Nile covered most of what is today western Egypt. From shards of limestone canals he was shown by Hakim, he claims that water was diverted from West to East. He argues that the Bu WZR pyramids may have been part of a huge Fibonacci spiral rather than a ground map of the heavens as asserted by Hancock and Bauval. And perhaps the biggest of all, he concludes that the Sphinx is very, very old. Hakim, in fact, believes that it is over 50,000 years old. If you think this is a stretch, read Our Cosmic Ancestors by Maurice Chatelain about numbers found in Assurbanipal's library which were known over 64,000 thousand years ago.

Stephen has provided an invaluable service and guidebook for all students of ancient Egypt. I highly recommend this book to all.

5 out of 5 stars A great leap insight into history and archaeology of Egypt.......2002-02-26

The Land of Osiris by Stephen Mehler is a very outstanding book. It is in fact the first book on the actual history and pre-history of Egypt written on the basis of knowledge received from the keeper of indigenous traditions, Egyptian archaeologist with European education Abd'El Hakim. Paradoxically, by so far nobody of Egyptologists was interested in the true history retained by autochthonous keepers! The book astonishes the reader by a great quantity of names of people who have explored archaeology and history of ancient Egypt. The book shows that the author is encyclopedic learning and deep awareness of manifold branches both of science and human life. His talent for a wide comprehensive analysis is a rarity among researchers.

S. Mehler filled the book by startling photographs, which allow us to touch to pre-historical places of boiling life of ancient Khemitians, autochthonous population of Khemitia (called Egypt by antique Greeks). In particular, a great surprise is the photograph of traces of a pre-historical harbor located now among uninhabited sands. He also presents incontestable evidence about direct contacts between pre-historical American civilizations and Khemitians. Basing on Hakim's knowledge of the Khemitian language, S. Mehler gives the correct interpretation of many terms, which so far were perceived as absolutely faithful (pharaoh, tomb, pyramid, etc.). The deciphering conducted radically changes our taking of ancient Egypt and put the Khemitian history back where their history found it. The book also tells about the organization of Khemitian community as a society of people with equal right. We have learned about the structure of their community that possessed a very deep scientific knowledge, which was based on the harmonic coexistence of people with Nature, or more exactly, with the universe that they perceived as a universal organism.

In fact, The Land of Osiris is an actual breakthrough in Egyptology. Bravo, Mehler! The book awakes consciousness and that is why it is highly recommended to everybody, from amateurs to scientists, from young to adults. A deep book for deep people.

5 out of 5 stars An intimate and astounding view of ancient Egypt!.......2002-01-31

The Land of Osiris restores to the Egyptian people their true proud heritage. Mehler looks at how research into the history of Egypt has been built on the opinions of non-indigenous people; foreigners who filtered what they saw with a chauvinism and superiority that was endemic to the invaders of this great land.

Not satisfied with the Greco-Roman model of the evolution of civilizations on this planet, Mehler began to study the oral tradition of the indigenous people of Egypt and learned that there was a hidden story waiting to be told. His book recounts this oral tradition and enlightens us to a much richer and older civilization than what we have been taught.

The Land of Osiris is a huge stepping stone in our journey to recover the wisdom of the ancient Khemitians (Egyptians).

Book Description

When National Geographic sent Charles O'Rear to photograph a little-known region of Napa Valley for a book about rural America, he was immediately enthralled by the area's natural beauty and vibrant tradition of winemaking. He soon made the valley his home and in the twenty-three years since, he has watched it grow from an obscure, secluded hollow in the California landscape to an internationally recognized food and wine destination. O'Rear has accumulated thousands of photographs of his idyllic environs, the best of which are brought together in this awe-inspiring volume. Each photo exhibits an artistry and grandeur imbued with the familiarity and immediacy that can only be gleaned by a Napa Valley local. From the people who grow the grapes and create the wines to the variety of winery architecture and unrivaled vistas that distinguish the land, NAPA VALLEY offers a personal and stunning look at the places, people, and events that have shaped this now-famous region. Without a doubt, O'Rear's collection is the most original and comprehensive treasury ever assembled on Napa Valley.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the essential qualities of the Valley.......2005-10-12

I have been visiting the Napa Valley for 10 years now and this excellent book captures the Napa Valley extremely well. The photography is up to the high standard set by National Geographic phtotograpers. Highly recommended from someone who does know the Napa Valley.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone wanting to retire a gentleman farmer........2003-04-16

This is a great book. It details the Napa Valley and the families in a great photographic format. I was completely fascinated by the imagery and the passion that they conveyed about wine making. Mr.O'Rear is a skilled photograher teller that weaves a silent story about the lives and art of wine making into one great book.

One of my desires is, after I retire from futures trading, is to own a vineyard. Mr.O'Rear has written a book that has convinced me that is what I should do.

5 out of 5 stars Almost as good as being there!.......2001-05-31

Stunning imagery of the Napa region and the people behind the industry. O'Rear shows the reader the real Napa, and his breathtaking pictures do justice to this terrific region. The centerfold is a four-page foldout of the ornate wooden gates of each winery in the region; both clever and masterful at once. O'Rear shows Napa as only a true insider can. This is the one to buy and will impress anyone who opens it. A must for the true wine lover!

5 out of 5 stars Napa, Napa, Napa, wine, wine, wine!.......2001-05-20

Napa: yep, that's it. The area just breathes the atmosphere of old times as can be found in the south of France.. but now in today's California, just north of San Francisco. And this book captures it all. The only thing *missing* from the book is the actual taste of the wine.

Once you've been there (either by car, or the famous Napa valley wine express) and you have seen and tasted this beautiful area, you will love the book as a souvenir. The quality of the prints is overwhelming - ranging from super-macro closups of cobalt blue grapes till wide, outstretching landscaping views.

And the book puts a face to the labels of your favourite wine. All the labels are listed, together with the matching winery's door, and some of the most famous Napa valley characters. Looking at these beautifully lighted out characteristic faces will give you an impression of the world behind the wine you are drinking.

WARNING: don't read this book if you are out of wine. You'll get too thirsty to resist.

Now let's wait for the video, Chuck! And the poster with the foldable airplane-ready frame.

This is an excellent book. I recommend it to all wine enthusiasts.

Book Description

Plato started it.

Plato was the one who first reported the existence of a vast island with immense mountains, verdant valleys and fruit "fair and wondrous and in infinite abundance." This magnificent Aegean Eden surrounded a capital of fabulous stone buildings, a busy, bustling heaven on earth.

And then, the Cataclysm. Panic spread across the island as Atlantis's volcano shook off its long dormancy. The mountain erupted, and the island was overwhelmed, engulfed. The sea smoothed over, and the continent and its occupants were gone forever.

Or were they?

Enter Robert Sullivan, who first rose to international prominence with his breakthrough research on Santa Claus. In Atlantis Rising, Sullivan reveals evidence even more startling than that contained in his myth-shattering Flight of the Reindeer: The True Story of Santa Claus and His Christmas Mission. Set upon his Atlantean quest by Amos S. Eno, executive director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and lured further and further on by the mysterious oceanographer who calls himself "Atwater," Sullivan is able to separate historical truth from mere legend, fact from fiction, science from silliness. Delving into the historical record, then into secret files that have long been under lock and key at the famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, he discovers rare transcripts, documents, maps and, incredibly, photographs. They are all here in Atlantis Rising, along with dozens of paintings by the renowned natural-history artist Glenn Wolff. It adds up to an astonishing tale and a powerful moral.

Atlantis lives.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2003-01-24

What a great story. Obviously well researched and extremely well presented. I stayed up all night reading this I was so captivated.
Buyer beware, this is not a "true story" as the title states (although after reading you're sure to be convinced otherwise). The is a fantastic piece of fiction heavily rooted in fact.
I absolutely encourage you to pick this up, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a true story!.......2003-01-04

I felt being tricked for reading this book. I found it in a local library. When I read the cover, it says " the true story...." So I thought that I will read it.

The story is interesting and fun to read. However, after I finished the whole book, and turned to the last page, it has "This book is a work of fiction."

well, if it is not true, why did you put it on the cover to make me think that I am actually reading a book about the real story of Atlantis?!

Therefore, I gave it a rating of 1 star.

5 out of 5 stars Atlantis Lives.......2001-02-13

It was a joy to read this book. Well researched and with beautiful illustrations the book caught my imagination. It doesn't matter whether you are a believer or not... The book is interesting to all. It can be read as fiction - or as a pertinent theory on Atlantis. It doesn't hurt that with the new Disney movie coming up - it gives me some information to share with my kids when the questions on Atlantis come up.

4 out of 5 stars A perception of Atlantis.......2000-09-03

I truly enjoyed this book. Robert Sullivan provided wonderful photos and historical knowledge of Atlantis in the form of a journal/story. There are questions left unanswered as well as interesting data presented. To believe it is another question. Objectively, I would like to research it myself as many others are probably doing. I enjoyed reading the book because of my interest in Atlantis and the mystery connections. It reads like a pleasant science fiction story with perhaps some truth to it. The book was appealing because it was presented well artistically and it caught my eye. Reading was also a pleasure well suited to someone with a general interest in Atlantis.

5 out of 5 stars Made my heart sing!.......1999-12-30

This book is amazingly informative and a visual delight. The author did an incredible job of researching Atlantis and presenting all the pertinent facts. The drawings and photo layouts further the beauty and information exchange. I recommend this highly book to adults and kids. Enjoy!
