Book Description

"A novel of classical proportions and virtues...humane and moving."–The Washington Post Book World

"A love story on more than one level, and Ms. Willis does justice to them all. It was only toward the end of the book that I realized how much tension had been generated, how engrossed I was in the characters, how much I cared about their fates."–The New York Times Book Review

For Jeff Johnston, a young historical reseacher for a Civil War novelist, reality is redefined on a bitter cold night near the close of a lingering winter. He meets Annie, an intense and lovely young woman suffering from vivid, intense nightmares. Haunted by the dreamer and her unrelenting dreams, Jeff leads Annie on an emotional odyssey through the heartland of the Civil War in search of a cure. On long-silenced battlefields their relationship blossoms–two obsessed lovers linked by unbreakable chains of history, torn by a duty that could destroy them both. Suspenseful, moving, and highly compelling, Lincoln’s Dreams is a novel of rare imaginative power.

5 out of 5 stars Metaphors of Real Life.......2007-06-15

This is the second book I have read by Ms. Willis, and I can say without reservation that she is a superb writer. Her greatest strength is in character portrayal and development; it is easy for the reader to care about the fictional persons presented by the author. To me, that is the sign of a great writer.

There are numerous sub-themes in this modest-length book: duty, honor, and compassion being three. The major interaction takes place between a man who definitely falls for a woman who is increasingly consumed by the dreams of people long dead: Civil War soldiers, President Lincoln, Robert E. Lee. Though fantastic on its face, the author still succeeds in conveying common human emotions and the ragged transition between abnormal experience and the intensities of everyday feeling.

I think this book will appeal not to the Civil War buff--it's not that sort of book--nor even specifically to the fan of science fiction and fantasy. It's greatest appeal, I think, is likely to be those who appreciate exploration of human emotions and the complexities of relationship.

1 out of 5 stars yikes!.......2007-06-08

This book had a great premise but it was dull as dishwater and extremely hard to follow. The characters were stiff and ultimately unlikable. I'm glad I borrowed this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best but not bad.......2007-04-04

This book is a pretty easy read. I give the author credit for her Civil War research but a reader should not take everything as fact. For instance, the author played it as fact that Abraham Lincoln had a acromegaly or gigantism, when it is actually believed but not confirmed that he may have had Marfan's Syndrome. From what I read, Marfan's can lead to acromegaly but it can also lead to scoliosis, flat feet and a plethora of other things. The big one was the way Robert E. Lee died. He did not die of a angina or a heart ailment nor did he say much when he died. He suffered a stroke that took away his speech and then died a month or so later of pneumonia. I think there was decent but not exactly accurate research. Others may say it's a book of fiction but there was no reason to change those two things for the story's sake. The author could have adjusted the Annie character to be warned of a stroke instead of a heart attack. Creative license was not needed.

1 out of 5 stars Oh, this was BAD!.......2006-10-18

I don't know why I thought I should purchase this book. I think it was because I like time travel stories and I like historical novels. I had never even heard of Connie Willis, but she definitely has a bunch of readers that like her writing, so I decided to order this and a few others since Amazon had a sale on Mass Market paperbacks.

Oh, gosh, I can't believe I even read this book. It was THAT bad!

Her characters were completely flat and flat-out unlikeable and even stupid! The main male character was doltish. His employer was less than impressive. The 'bad' psychiatrist did so many unethical things that I had to look up the year the book was written more than once-- since it seemed that the only way he could still have his medical license would have been if he was practicing prior to 1940! And, the main female character was just confusing and frustrating.

One of the main flaws of this book had to do with the author-character and the research assistant character. Both of these characters were supposed to be historians very familiar with the Civil War specifically. Some of the things they had to find out and had to research was common knowledge to anyone who studies the Civil War. And, since both these characters had written several Civil War novels prior to the book they were working on in this novel, it seems they knew very little.

The other flaws were the lack of character development and story development. We really know nothing of the characters except that they check their phone messages quite a bit, are scared of the psychiatrist for no real apparent reason except he is angry with both of them for leaving the area and severing the doctor/patient relationship, and fell in love immediately although there is nothing appealing about either one!

The story, too, is just weird. There is no real closure or understanding about what happened. It's kind of left to our imagination, but it's not real clear why Annie had the dreams. And, even if you decide you understand completely why Annie had the dreams, it makes absolutely no sense at all why we all don't have similar dreams.

Yes, all stories require a suspension of belief, but there should be some feasible explanation at the end. This book lacked that.

I am trying one of the author's other novels, but I don't have high hopes for that one, either. We'll see. . .

5 out of 5 stars unexpected treat.......2006-02-09

Lincoln's Dreams is one of those rare books you buy twice if you lose it or someone borrows it and does not return it. It was different than anything I've ever read before! Lincoln's Dreams inspired me to know more about the civil war; I did web research and I purchased 3 history books... still thirsty I researched my own family history. Connie Willis made the civil war personal for me in a way I never would have believed. If I were a history teacher this would be required reading.

Book Description

For the past few years America has seen the rapid growth of the dream circle phenomenon, as groups of all ages gather to discuss and interpret one another’s dreams in a collective effort to understand the universal energy of the cosmos and the creative human spirit. Connie Kaplan, dream guide and spiritual counselor, is a leader in this community, and her previous book, The Woman’s Book of Dreams, has become one of its standard texts.

Kaplan’s new book, Dreams Are Letters from the Soul, shows readers that when they sleep and dream, they are actually connecting with the creative force of the universe. In addition to viewing dreams as individual experiences of personal, psychological relevance, Kaplan argues that we need to develop an understanding that in dreaming we revisit our spiritual source. She encourages us to see our dreams as encoded messages from the soul, guiding our collective spiritual growth.

Through her own moving story and the dream journals of her students and of the women in her dream circles, Kaplan describes the various forms of dreams we experience: prophetic, telepathic, ceremonial, shamanic, psychological, healing, and spiritual, to name a few. She explains how we can consciously develop access to the unseen realms of creation, which will help us crack the code of our dreams and turn our life potential into a tangible form for positive change. Dreams Are Letters from the Soul redefines the way we think about and relate to our dreams.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Perspectives and Implications of Dreams.......2002-08-05

Connie Kaplan's most recent book is divinely inspired teachings on the deeper meanings and purposes of dreams. It goes so far above and beyond the normal personal symbolic or psychological analysis and into the spiritual realms. Our soul, through our dreams speaks to us, guides us, and helps us to remember who we really are and why we are here, both individually and collectively. Dreams model to us the shift from the egocentric level to that of a cohesive community working together for the greater good for all, which we then can manifest in our own waking reality. Quite profound!

2 out of 5 stars Men Beware: This book is only for women.......2002-07-21

Connie Kaplan's book "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul : Discover the Connections Between Your Dreams and Your Spiritual Life" is a fluffy, one-sided view of the dream landscape. Connie Kaplan has an entertaining, engaging writing style that makes her book an easy, understandable read. She explains the different levels of dreams and provides good examples. Yet there is something lacking right from the start.

One realizes very on in this work that Connie is only writing about women and their dreams. Only at the very end of her book does she mention a man's dream, inadequately describing its significance.

Ms. Kaplan has obviously only worked with women for this book. What happened to the men and their perspective? Don't they dream too? I felt like I only got half of the story when I read this book. An analogy would be like talking about a day (24 hours) and leaving out the whole part about the sun shining. Sure the moon is beautiful and so are the stars, but what about the light and the sun.

There are many other books out there about dreams that tell more of the whole story.

5 out of 5 stars Still Captivated..........2002-07-16

Connie Kaplan's book "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul : Discover the Connections Between Your Dreams and Your Spiritual Life" is amazing to read. She has a wonderfully positive and loving view of dreaming and the messages contained therein. I have read this book back to front and front to back and keep on getting more and more insight from it!! Connie's first book, "The Woman's Book of Dreams..." whet my appetite for this more detailed view of dreaming. "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul..." offered me life changing ideas and still captivates my mind long after the covers are closed.

My Soul thanks you, Connie.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams are Letters from the Soul.......2002-06-26

This magical book will change the way you dream. I know that sounds like quite a claim, but it's true. Connie Kaplan's lyrical writing style draws you into the flow of dream time, radically enhancing your dreaming as a result. Kaplan is the ultimate dream guide, taking you on an unforgettable journey through 4 deepening levels of dreaming, revealing to you 13 different types of dreams that will help you understand who you are and why you are here.

This is a book you can read over and over, gaining more insight each time you read it. Keep it next to your bed on your nightstand and read a few paragraphs before you go to sleep. You'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Dreams.......2002-05-22

Having read and enjoyed Connie Kaplan's first book,as well as having had the luxury of studying with her in an online dream circle 3 years ago, I was very much looking forward to 'Dreams Are Letters From the Soul". My life was forever changed by Connie's wise teachings, and deeply meaningful work. I had always been a dreamer-- my dreams often overwhelmed me, and I never felt satisfied by the information I read in standard psychological dream interpretations. I always felt there was a very spiritual element that I simply did not have the vocabulary to articulate, even to myself. Working with Connie's teachings changed all this however. I keep using the word 'teaching', simply because I cannot think of a better word to describe her powerful work. Certainly, there is nothing dogmatic or narrow about her conceptualization of what the dreamtime is all about. Whatever your spiritual path may be, I can attest to the inclusiveness and importance of this book.
I sat down with it and did not put it down until I had read it cover to cover. Surely I will refer back to it on many an occasion. I treasure it. For anyone, anyone who experiences the often confounding gift of a vivid dream-life-- this book is a must-have, must-read, must re-read. I'm not one to push books on other people, nor am I one to ever assume that what has worked for me will work for someone else. . .but there is just so much universal truth in this book-- it is such a wonderful starting point-- or even check-point-- on the spiral path of evolution and growth. Brava, Connie, this book is truly a masterpiece, and I cannot wait to read the next one!!! Thank you so much for offering this insight to the world-- it is much needed.
Again, brava!!

Book Description

Living the Dream is the true-life adventure story of a seven-year cruise from Newport Oregon, to Phuket Thailand in the 35-foot steel-hulled sailboat Tainui. This book gives a true picture of what it's really like for a retired couple to live their dream of full time cruising to far away places: the highs of beautiful sailing days, snorkeling off pristine coral, anchoring in tropical lagoons, exotic cultural experiences, and the fellowship of the cruising community, but also fear in storms, the exhaustion of sleepless night watches, discouragement of endless boat maintenance, and a rusting through of Tainui's hull. Although Living the Dream is written for a general audience, serious sailors will find a wealth of helpful cruising information and steel boat owners will profit from significant learning experiences in the maintenance of a steel hull.

4 out of 5 stars Everyman & Everywoman Accomplish the Impossible.......2007-02-03

Hard work, sleepless nights, a little terror - then, you lose sight of shore. This book offers nuts and bolts (pun intended) reportage of the hard journey of retirees Vern & Connie from the U.S. Pacific Northwest to and through the South Pacific. Romantics and idealists be warned. Exactly how much work is involved in do-it-yourself sailing across the world? Read this and find out, but if you're interested only in star-gazing and spine-tingling adventure, this won't be the book for you. The clear descriptions of their route and obscure landing points - which now, thanks to Google Earth, can be tracked visually - provide a solid South Pacific geography lesson.

The authors reveal what an amazing feat and test of courage it is to go that distance in a 35-foot sailboat. Just don't forget your screwdriver, engine manual, washers, fuses, and extra light bulbs.

After reading it, you might wish you could sit down and chat with Vern and Connie. Your first question would probably be "Would you do it over, knowing what you know now?"

"HEARTBREAKING...COMPELLING...The story carries you like a slow, implacable current."
--San Francisco Chronicle
Forty-something Sadie Hunter is a loner. But more than that, she is afraid of not being alone. Ever since her mother and Native American grandmother died together when she was a child, dancing cheek-to-cheek in a saloon in the middle of a violent storm, Sadie hasn't let anyone get too close. Not even Carlos, a passionate Cuban who sees the rich soul that Sadie tries to hide from herself.
Cynical and loveless, she becomes obsessed with learning more about her unacknowledged identity, torn apart by tragic family legends she can't quite believe. And although she tries to fight it, she half suspects that with Carlos's help, she could find the truth of the past, and it could set her free....
"A fluid, fun read--a story of self-discovery told by a woman haunted by female forebears while struggling to learn love....A work of accomplished introspection."
--The Philadelphia Inquirer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Moving on, via the past.......2000-07-20

I seem to be working my way backwards through Connie May Fowler's list, after serendipitiously finding "Before Women Had Wings". Ms Fowler certainly has a gift with opening paragraphs - I usually give a novel 10 pages to hook me, but both of these books had me well and truely landed after one paragraph.

Sadie is a feisty, 40ish, tour guide in the Florida Everglades, but her real vocation is that of a story teller. She finds her captive audiences among those chartering her elderly but regal boat, the product of an almost unbearably steadfast love, inherited from her mother and grandmother after their amazingly unlucky deaths when she was nine.

Sadie is unconditionally loved by Carlos, an accidental and unwilling Cuban refugee, who has an endless tolerance for her headstrong and stubborn behaviour, and her complete unwillingness to commit to anything.

Sadie's struggle to come to terms with her own life is beautifully entwined with the stories of "her women", as their their stubborn strength and fortitude emerges though a series of dreams and childhood rememberances. We are drawn back to the times of newly emancipated slaves and Native Americans torn from their homelands (realising that was not so many generations ago), and are given a grand tour of the Everglades and the Florida coast. But mostly we are taken on a trip through love in many of its forms - unrequited, unconditional, uncompromising, enduring - as Sadie learns to love herself and allow herself to be cherished.

I recommend this book highly and I'm looking forward to reading more from this fine writer.

4 out of 5 stars A book that takes you away with it . . ........1999-07-12

River of Hidden Dreams is Connie May Fowler's second book, and it is also the second book I have read of hers.

River of Hidden dreams is very picturesque in georgraphical description, rich in history (in particular, with the Native Americans), and full of emotion.

Sadie is afraid to get close to anyone, to let her guard down, and to love and be loved. She lost her beloved grandmother, Mima, and her mother when she was young. They died together, while they were dancing, when a hurricane hit and the roof caved in, killing them. Sadie was a young girl, and never got over the loss. All she had to keep her company were stories passed down from Mima and Mama, a regal boat the grandfather (Mr. Sammy) she never got to meet, built, and an old quilt her mother and grandmother had sewn.

This piognant story traces Mima, as well as Mr. Sammy's life, and then touches a bit on her mother's. It tells of how Mima was taken from her family and stripped of her Native American heritage when a wealty woman named Miss Alice adopted her and lavished her with the finer things in life.

Mr. Sammy, a warm-hearted mulatto, had befriended, and fallen in love with Susannah (Mima) for the second time (he had laid eyes on her briefly once before in passing, and her face haunted him until their second meeting) when she had fainted in a church. Soon, a whirlwind romance had gotten started, until circumstances had changed.

Sadie is haunted, not knowing if the stories she was told as a child by Mima and Mama were true or just fabrications. She had brothers and a father she had never met, and now she had a loving Cuban named Carlos, who wouldn't abandon her, no matter how high her walls were.

This is a story about Sadie finding herself, allowing herself to love Carlos and to be loved by him, and to revist her past to see if those lovely fables her grandmother uttered had any thread of truth to them.

Connie May Fowler tells the aching story from Sadie's point of view, and when Sadie thinks back to her past, those historic fables are told in Mima's and Mr. Sammy's voice -- illustrting the rich emotions running through three generations of women.

This is a wonderful story, and the only complaint I have is the ending. There was so many loose ties. There was a fleeting moment of Sadie thinking about the brothers she had never known. Did she try to find them? What else did she find out about her past? What kind of future was Carlos and Sadie jumping into?

Besides the loose ends during the conclusion of the story, the rest of the book was highly enjoyable. Connie May Fowler proves to be one of the most talented and gifted writers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Connie May Fowler is a amazing writer.......1999-05-16

Attention all Woman, If there is one book that you read, this would be it. It is so romantic that you want to become Sadie and Mima for just a little bit at certain points of the book and if you read this book you will know what I'm talking about.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Book! I'm looking forward to reading more........1999-02-09

This is the first novel I've read by Connie May Fowler and I enjoyed it thoroughly. She gives an excellent sense of place. If you like the earlier works of Barbara Kingsolver, you will like this book. Fowler brings to life the Gulf Coast area like Kingsolver does the American Southwest. I felt like I was sitting on a Gulf of Mexico shore.

The story also drew me in. The sweet but troubled romance mixed with narratives from a very racist era in our past make for thought provoking reading. Fowler offers us a close perspective on issues our culture still tries to ignore. Not to mention the book is just plain hard-to-put-down.

Thanks, Connie May Fowler, for writing such a good book.

4 out of 5 stars The real Florida in a dream.......1997-09-11

"River of Hidden Dreams" traces the history of Florida before Walt drained the swamp and Crockett put on that white jacket. A woman in Key West begins an epic journey along Florida's East Coast and through time as she seeks her roots in St. Augustine. Anybody who's lived in or visited these places -- the real Florida -- will appreciate Fowler's ability to evoke places and feelings, particularly Key West and St. Augustine. The book's flaw is that the voice of the author, a relatively uneducated, middle-age tour guide in Key West, sometimes sounds more learned than she actually is. But not often enough to interrupt this solid journey into a world little understood outside the misnamed Sunshine State

Book Description

Every culture throughout time has been fascinated by and curious about its dreams. In this book, dream teacher Connie Kaplan gives readers a way to understand their dreams as a spiritual contract with life. She shows how dreaming energy is connected with the womb and with menstrual and hormonal cycles. Even men and postmenopausal women share this unique connection through the metaphoric womb. Once readers learn to use these cycles to understand and chart their dreams, they can use the lessons learned to improve their lives. Kaplan's is a new look at an age-old system that allows dreamers to read the messages in their dreams as if they were letters from the soul. Her book will stir ancient memories of a time when the spiritual connection to the universe was deeply felt and celebrated.

5 out of 5 stars A way of life.......2003-10-05

Well, I can tell you either this book will change your life or it won't. It changed the course of the rest of my life. Either you are connected to the dream weave or you aren't. For myself, and others, I can only say, thank God for Connie and the dream circle for leading the way. We all dream, we are all connected. Some of us choose this particular path as our spiritual destiny. You will know if you are one of us. Do the work and it will change your life. If you think you are a spiritual dreamer, this book is a good place to start.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful suggestions.......2001-04-20

I like this book, inspite of a number of shortcomings. It's a nicely presented edition from Beyond Words Publishing. The idea of creating a dream database for correlating lunar transits and days of the month with dreams is helpful, and the suggestion that we should recapitulate the events of the day before going to sleep each night is also very useful. I liked the idea of mapping the dream phases and establishing a dream circle of friends in which to share dreams. (The dream chart is the same idea as the menstrual mandala in "Alchemy for Women: Personal Transformation through dreams and the female cycle" by Shuttle and Redgrove, 1995, with the addition of lunar transits.) As an interesting aside, this author leads dreaming circles through lindagoodman.net's academy, with the most recent on being entitled "dreaming on the vernal equinox 2001."

Overall, though, I found that there was too much emphasis on simply recounting people's dreams and without much guidance for the reader on how to work with their own.

Kaplan refers a lot to astrology, but she should have paid more attention to its technical aspects. For example, void-of-course Moon is defined as follows: "As the moon moves from sign to sign during a month, she may, for a few hours, be outside the direct influence of any sign. (Those constellations are far apart!) When the moon is between signs, she is said to be void of course." In fact, a void of course Moon is one that does not make any complete aspect to any planet or the Sun before leaving the zodiacal sign that it is in. It is not somehow outside the influence of a sign. Elsewhere, as another exmaple, she makes an odd statement: "Sagittarius governs the blood. Dreams may refer to the sense of inner peace invoked by proper blood flow." For a fuller and more accurate treatment of this subject, see "Crossing the Threshold: The astrology of dreaming" by Linda Reid. For a more complete exposition on dreaming and shamanism/consciousness work, see Robert Moss's books, such as "Conscious Dreaming: A spiritual path of everyday life."

5 out of 5 stars Try it...see if you like it..........2001-02-19

This book has been my dosage of cleansing wine for a very extended period of time. It has helped me relax for a while, you'll see when you listen to her style...she has allowed us to visit the dream world on earth for a while...she has showed me how my dreams are not as far off as they often times deceived me to believe. She has connected the images in my head to the life I have lead, as well as the water I still have to tread. Furthermore, I no longer dread, because infinite answers are entering through my head, at night while I am in my bed. Through her words she has taken us readers and dreamers all in one swoop a step deeper into the crack of light and clear, through her wisdom. By the same token she relieves us from our fear. Through her metaphors she has illustrated the routes that lead to the destinations of my dreams arrow. Her organization has simplified and sensualized the contact between the two points of view. She has created something of efficiency. The only practical tools you'll ever need or phene. Her words breath an air of confidentiality, yet she is sharing with me and the world effortlessly the air that she herself breeds. Through the publishing of her thoughts, I have a private tutor bought. It's exactly what you and I have sought. I am glad that I have her knowledge caught, saw the battles she faught and learned the lessons she was taught. She has persuaded me to use my dreams as a prediction of the day, or as reflections of the past or future plans and plays. She deserves an "A" for accuracy, for the effective portrayal of a world that seemed so indistinct and far away. The product itself,of her thoughts reformed into diction have fed me, and in that she has helped me. She has the ability to disect phenomena, down into realistic pieces, easy enough to digest and process, yet strong enough to keep you on the constant watch. She has afforded me insight on how to have one of the most intimate experiences of each day of life. Now when I wake up, there's an evolution of solutions on how to travel to the land free of dispute. She has showed me how to commute from one set of rules to a new set of clues on how to live with few. She has guided me to my landing, and now I can step off and be a solely traveling man...well wo-man...she has definetly brought back to my life zeal and appeal, not that what I had before wasn't real, she just showed me how to feel. Connie clarified me on how to find delight in my strife. Dreams are in the palms of our hands, and I'm not about to leave them to be shy, because now I know why...why this information is right by our side. After reading this book, it is impossible to lie about the truth we will through dreams and life find while intertwined. So let your dreams unwind...but first this book you must grind.

5 out of 5 stars The Candycane Flavored with Reality and Dreams.......2001-01-29

Well, the word candycane seem's perhaps a little misfit for a description of how this book has influenced my vision of life, but it is the most accurate archetype I can think of in this world that can fully capture the niftyness and mysticalness of this book. It was the first book to guide me in the direction of another pursuit of perspective of myself and the world, through the window of dreams. Back to the candycane though, to put it short, this book swirls waking life and dream conscience into one. It has been a treat to read, from start to end.Kaplan has written a masterpiece, full of intricate mysteries, and crystalized many things for me. The set up of the book is practical! And the cover still intrigues me! This book has allowed me to see just how much we live in a dream world. Thank You For Listening, For those searching for just that ideal book on dreams, every page of this book shares more then you can imagine. Thank You Connie for showing me your insight, I am one step closer now. Buh Bye Corinne Meier 17, Miami, Florida

5 out of 5 stars Your dreams connect you to your soul!.......1999-10-28

Connie Kaplan's book could revolutionize your life by changing your picture of yourself. Instead of seeing dreams as clues to your past, you will find that they are messages from your soul, guiding you into the future. She offers hints about dream interpretation that go far beyond the old "dream books" and even beyond psychology. This book is a very important tool for the serious spiritual inquirer.

Product Description

Water Beds: Sleeping in the Ocean is a soothing bedtime story that answers the question of how marine mammals – animals that breathe air – manage to sleep in the ocean. Youngsters meet ten marine mammals, including sea otters, bottlenose dolphins, manatees, harbor seals, humpback whales and walruses, and learn about each animal’s unique sleeping habits. Although the brief portraits are based on up-to-date scientific research, author Gail Langer Karwoski weaves the facts into simple, poetic language. Connie McLennan’s rich oil paintings capture the ocean’s habitats and its appealing creatures. The story invites children to drift into peaceful sleep on the gentle waves of imagination. An educa-tional supplement in the back of the book includes teaching trivia about marine mammals, their sleep habits, and how they have adapted to their watery environment, and make-your-own marine mammal craft using various animal adaptations. Ages 2-8

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all parents.......2006-09-25

In her delightfully informative book, author Gail Langer Karkowski delves deep into the world of animals sleep, and shares with her readers an inside look into the mysterious world of the ocean; a world children often wonder about.

Illustrator Connie McLennan compliments the text beautifully with her pictures. Best described as a perfect mix of realism and whimsy, McLennan's illustrations transport readers deep within the realms of the ocean to a place they've only dreamt about.

A must have for all children who dream, wonder, and explore.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing picturebook collection of ten marine mammals and their unique sleeping habits.......2006-07-13

With illustrations from Connie McLennan, Water Beds: Sleeping In The Ocean by Gail Langer Karwoski is an intriguing picturebook collection of ten marine mammals and their unique sleeping habits. Included are the sleeping habits of the bottlenose dolphin, harbor seals, elephant seals, northern fur seals, walruses, humpback whales, beluga whales, manatees, sea otters, and walruses. Water Beds carries young readers through a charmingly presented survey of the diversity of sleeping methods with a thoroughly "kid friendly" text enhanced with beautiful illustrations throughout. Concluding with "For Creative Minds" (a summary of marine mammal adaptations for an ocean environment) and "Make Your Own Marine Mammal Using Adaptations" (a hands on creative exercise applying what's been learned about marine mammals), Water Beds is a very highly recommended addition for school and community library "Pets & Wildlife" collections for children ages 4 to 8, and an ideal selection for parents as an entertaining and educational bedtime picturebook.

5 out of 5 stars Best book my mom has written yet!.......2006-04-19

This book is beautifully, poetically written, the illustrations are just perfect, so bright and colorful. I know it would have been my favorite book as a little girl, and it is the current book of choice for many of my friend's kids. Sure to inspire any little marine biologist!!!

5 out of 5 stars An adorable book to be enjoyed by young and old alike.......2006-03-15

Winner of Mom's Choice Award for Most Outstanding Author 2005, this adorable book will soon become your child's favorite. Brightly illustrated, the story begins as a means to lull your child to sleep with pleasant memories of how marine mammals sleep. The first page pictures a young boy clad in bright red pajamas, surrounded by his collection of stuffed marine mammals. During sleep the mammals come alive and he swims with the orcas, as they glide side-by-side in their pod. Four minutes of rest then up to breathe. He nestles on shore with a sleeping harbor seal. My personal favorite is the dolphins. Did you know they sleep with one eye open? The pajama clad boy nestles on a soft water plant as he sleeps with the manatees on a sandy waterbed. He wears a life vest to keep afloat to bob up and down with the naturally buoyed walruses. Another favorite of mine is the sea otters. They wrap kelp strands around their tummies to anchor themselves in place. When it is cold they cover their little cheeks with their furry front paws.

Water Beds includes a section of additional information and activities in the back called "For Creative Minds." This section includes information about what makes an animal a mammal, and includes teaching trivia about how marine mammals adapt to their watery habitat. A craft section includes graphics for children to design their own marine mammal, encouraging them to think about how each body part helps the mammal survive.

Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A lovely, recommended book.......2005-12-02

Water Beds tells how sea mammals breathe air in water during sleep. Interesting facts float through this lyrical picture book, presented in an understandable manner. A child personalizes each spread, bringing a calming tone for easy bedtime reading. The book is further complimented by appealing oil painting illustrations, soothing yet dotted with water details. Fascinating facts and how-to drawing information draw attention to the back of the book.
