Book Description
From the USA Today bestselling author of Joshua's Hammer and High FlightOn the Bay of Bengal a civilian research vessel witnesses a submarine fire a laser into the sky. Before they can process what they see, the sub blasts them out of the water and captures the lone survivor.Immediately, one of the United States spy satellites becomes inoperative, and seemingly disappears. With the United States blind, Pakistan plans to announce their presence as a nuclear threat with an attack on India that would leave millions dead. The only witnesses to the plan, and the only ones to know that the bomb is small enough to be dropped from an aircraft, are a CIA insertion team, headed by the President's own brother, former Navy SEAL lieutenant Scott Hanson. Their knowledge may prevent a nuclear holocaust, but they've been captured and tortured.Thrust into the action is Commander Frank Dillon, Jr., commanding officer on the American nuclear sub Seawolf, together with a team of SEALs. Their mission is to get them back safely. But with the world on the brink of war, getting out may be the greatest challenge.
Customer Reviews:
A great read, I am hoping for more like this one!.......2005-11-29
I really enjoyed this book a great deal more than anything I have read from the Kirk McGarvey series. At the risk of offending McGarvey fans; much of what I have read of the McGarvey series seems a bit stale, perhaps lacking energy. But this book, By Dawn's Early Light, is a real keeper.
To me, this book seems to focus a bit more on the technical and military aspects, without becoming overly bogged down in techno-babble. There are enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing; while the villians and their plans are more or less believable.
It leaves me wanting to read more about Scott Hanson. I am not holding my breath of course, but I hope he does at leat a few more of these; especially since not everything is resolved by the end of this novel.
Top Notch Hagberg.......2005-01-26
This was a most enjoyable read. Lot's of quick paced excitement. Four man CIA team on a mission to get information on a nuclear test end up being captured by Pakistani's. Navy Seal team attempts to rescue them. US submarine Seawolf has much excitement as it prevails over North Korean and Chinese craft. The only thing missing was the capture of the enemy spy who was highly placed in the U.S. government and kept tipping them off to the above mentioned plans.
Action Packed Book!.......2005-01-02
There is a civilian research team doing studies in the Bay of
Bengal. They see a submarine fire a laser into the sky. Before they can report the laser blast the submarine blasts them out of the water and capture the lone survivor.
The blast that was witnessed has disabled an Americab spy satellite. With the satellite gone Pakistan is planning a nuclear attack on India.A CIA team headed up by the President's brother, and three other are on an observation mission in Pakistan. They witness the explosion of a thermo nuclear bomb.
They are captured by Pakistani Rangers and are being held prisoner.
Captain Frank Dillon Jr. is placed in charge of recovering the CIA agents. He winds up getting into several battles with
submarines from other countries who are also involved in this plot to attack India. The American forces also have to contend with a spy in the Pentagon who is keeping Pakistan informed of
America's every move.
This is a very good action story that you will enjoy reading.
The finsh is also very entertaining.Buy this book. You will enjoy it.
Great, but I am confused by the ending........2004-12-28
I thought that the book was a great war story and a real page turner. I enoyed all the action and the great details of the story. The constantly changing character perspectives kept it interesting. The only part I didn't like about the book was the ending. It leaves you thinking that there is a sequel, but I am having a hard time finding it. All in all, the book was great and anyone who wants to read a good war story should read it.
A great Story But...........2004-12-03
David Hagberg writes a pretty good story, ones that I find difficult to put down. However, He really needs to brush up on military reality. As a retired military man (Navy) I found several discordant facts in the story, even allowing for author's license to shape the story as he pleases. The Navy does not have a grade of CPO3 (CPO being Chief Petty Officer) nor have women ever been accepted for SEAL training, much less graduating from the program. Indicating female character toughness by making them a graduate of SEAL training is not reality. There are other ways to do this. The story would make for smooth reading throughout if more attention to these little details were paid. All in all, the story and plot are worth reading and enjoyable I would give it a "5" except for the above comments.

The world may be very different outside..........2007-05-27
This work is a survey of American attitudes toward nuclear power immediately after WWII, as reflected in journalism and advocacy work. The book covers the immediate post-war years, 1945 - 1950. It describes how people overcame their fear of the bomb by developing a willful ignorance, aided in no small part by the strenuous propaganda efforts of the government.
There are interesting tidbits- how scientists went from objects of esteem to objects of ridicule, the ties between the bomb and sex, and the willingness of our government to mount domestic misinformation campaigns. But what most struck me was the initial public reaction to the bomb, and how similar it was to 9/11.
People were shocked and terrified by the news of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, despite the fact that it was us who dropped the bombs. At the conclusion of WWII people thought another world war in which atomic bombs would be used against American cities was inevitable. Radical ideas abounded, with some calling for a global government, others for the deconstruction of cities in favor of low density dispersed settlements (suburbs). Everywhere there was fear, and a pervasive belief that the way of life people knew from before the war was gone forever. Everything changed with the bomb.
Sound familiar? The threat of mass destruction is not new to America, it wasn't invented on 9/11. It was invented by us generations ago. Our parents learned to cope with it then, this book gives a look at how they did it.
Excellent overview of the first 5 years of nuclear culture.......2002-04-11
Paul Boyer is well known as a scholar of American millenialism, both religious and secular, from his book "When Time Shall Be No More", but gathering slightly less attention is his impressive volume "By the Bomb's Early Light: American Thought and Culture at the Dawn of the Atomic Age." Boyer is a cultural historian, and grew up a pacifist, so its no surprise that he frames the years 1945 to 1950 as years of fierce contention over the role of nuclear weapons and energy in American society. His overarching thesis, is precisely that---the years of 1945-1950 showed a sharp swing from grave concern and fear over nuclear energy to visions of nuclear promise and technological utopias, promulgated by the U.S. government and the Atomic Energy Agency, with vocal, dissenting minorities present at each pendulum swing. Boyer speculates that this may form a model for subsequent generations' relationship with nuclear energy, from care to indifference and back again.
Boyer's method is to examine evidence of public thought and conversations during these five years, from "letters to the editor" of newspapers, to intellectual journals of thought, to cartoonists, to the literary world of William Faulkner and Gertrude Stein, to religious organizational bulletins. He makes skillful use of primary sources, demonstrating that while majority opinions could be clearly demonstrated to have existed, undercurrents of contention and dissention remained at each step. Boyer also makes it understandable that as Americans' expectations of another war increased (59% in October 1945 to 77% in late 1947, page 335) Americans sought not to curtail the development of nuclear energy, but rather trust in technological superiority and civil defense to survive the "inevitable " war, a concomitant response to civil defense campaigns, visions of technological utopia, and simply atomic fatigue---even a subject like nuclear war could only generate a certain sustained interest over a period of time if not directly confronting daily life in the U.S. However, Boyer also suggests that a drop-off in interest in nuclear issues may have been due to deep-seated horror rather than complacency (as noted by Elaine Tyler May) This may belong to the more speculate aspects of his study, given that in the late 40's and 50's open counternarratives to nuclear utopia were building, such as in the literary and poetic work of the Beats. But in general I find "By The Bomb's Early Light" an excellent, accessible account of the major movements in a fascinating period of cultural history, one clearly marked by ideological conflicts and disagreement rather than consensus.
How America Learned to Love the Bomb.......2000-11-29
Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, discourse on the threat of nuclear arms has all but vanished, relegated to a relatively quiet resurgence of the Star Wars debate and to a few footnotes on the developmental history of the internet. Despite this current hiatus in nuclear consciousness, every American living today has at least a passing acquaintance with the concept of atomic annihilation; sitcoms, government press releases, popular films, and news media are inconstant but persistent reminders of the nuclear threat. Paul Boyer's By the Bomb's Early Light traces these media as they shaped and reflected American consciousness at the birth of the atomic age.
Despite Boyer's professed pacifism and his personal views regarding the ultimately menacing nature of the atomic bomb, the various events, opinions, and artifacts cited are evenly presented. This objectivity, however, makes for rather dry reading, especially when Boyer's connective tissue is compared with the lofty literary attempts to come to terms with the inconceivable he quotes throughout. This work might be more effective if it gave itself over completely to the format it seems to yearn for: an assemblage of excerpts and passages from the original works with Boyer's commentary confined to sidebars and brief introductory essays. Of course, Boyer's goal was to produce a comprehensive volume of reference material drawing from a myriad of venues and disciplines, not a coffee table book about atomic kitsch of the 1940's. While not as entertaining as the latter and by no means a cover-to-cover page-turner, By The Bomb's Early Light serves as an excellent resource and starting point for further research.

History In Perspective.......2007-01-17
If you like historical novels, the Prelude To Glory series is one of the best. As with the previous eight books, By Dawn's Early Light combines factual history with the fictional Dunson family. So ends the liberties taken by poetic license, which is not to say that it isn't a good fiction story. Throughout the series, Ron Carter has moved a captivating story at the perfect pace.
For the history buffs, it's all there. The research and accuracy is astounding - as it should be. If your recollection of American history has faded, or you were never clear about event particulars, these are the books that will lay it all out, place the event, and put it in perspective. Each chapter is followed by footnotes that explain further a portion of the chapter, and offers references that allow the reader to make more in-depth discoveries about the chapter's topics.
This is the ninth in Ron Carter's series and I hope it is not his last. I have written to the author with the suggestion that he step back in time previous to the first book, Our Sacred Honor, which began the series with the first battles of the American Revolution. I have no doubt that Mr. Carter would lay a perfect foundation for what he has already written with the first nine novels. It would also relieve some of my envy of those who have not yet read this series and have it all ahead of them to enjoy.

Wonderful historical romance .......2007-04-12
My grandmother passed the Williamsburg novels on to me when I was 16. I devoured all of them that summer. I always wanted to read them again, and yesterday on a whim I decided to do just that. It has been 16 years since I last read the series, and I'm enjoying Dawn's Early Light with a new appreciation.
Thanks to the Internet, I now know more about the author. Elswyth Thane (1900-1981, American) was a romance writer in her time. She wrote several books, but the Williamsburg series are her most popular. (I now know that I have the first printings of the entire series, something I wasn't sure about before. They have beautiful jackets.)
I'd say while these novels have a healthy dose of history -- historical characters like Jefferson and Washington interact with our fictional characters in "Dawn's" -- they are first and foremost romance novels. Therefore, female readers might enjoy them more, which seems to be the case from the comments posted here!
Dawn's Early Light.......2006-08-20
This is the beginning book in a series of books called the Williamsburg novels. I have been reading and re-reading this series of 7 books for over 50 years. They are my all time favorite books. Each book deals with a war or pre-war action (except the war of 1812) in which the US has taken part from the Revolutionary War (Dawn's Early Light) to the Civil War (Yankee Stranger) to the Homing with is the last of the series and the 4th book which deals with WWI and WWII and the years in between. They are a great source of history. Ms Thane (widow of the explorer Dr. William Beebe) has done an excellent job of research for each of the books. I hope others find them as wonderful, and as entertaining as I do. I have read my old copies until they are falling apart. I was very excited to find they had been reprinted and purchased them immediately.
Let Me Give You A Little Advice.......2005-04-03
The advice is--- don't make the same mistake I did. Upon reading all the glowing reviews, this series of books sounded like just what I love to read--- long, interesting books, interesting characters. So- instead of buying them one at a time, I bought the whole darned Williamsburg Series, plus a few more by the same author, "Queen's Folly", the "Tudor Wench" and "Tryst". What a disappointment. Since this review is about "Dawn's Early Light", I won't mention how boring the other books were, but I've got to say-- "Dawn" was the best of the lot. However, I could hardly bring myself to finish it, but I did. The other books were just as boring--- if all the references to war had been left out, they would have been pamphlets, but much more interesting. Ladies, these are men's books-- unless you like to read of ambushes, guns, dead horses. I think Elswyth Thane had seen "Gone With The Wind" and was trying to emulate it in her work. She failed miserably. I should have bought one book to see her writing style, and I would have saved some cash, because I wouldn't have wasted my money on the rest.
Memorable Book.......2003-11-15
Reading this book is like peeking into the lives of its characters. I felt as if I got to know real individuals rather than the inventions of the author. She deftly reveals more and more about each character - I was left truly caring about what happened to them. I could have read it in one evening but instead, I spread it over three days - this gave me time to think about the individuals and what I thought would happen next. It is a truly memorable book - one that my friends and family are lining up to share - I have a wait list for individuals who want to borrow my book!
Historical fiction at its best!.......2002-05-24
When I started this book I had already read "Yankee Stranger" not knowing it was the second book in the series.
"Dawn's Early Light" is a wonderful introduction, to the continuing saga of a complex lovable American family.
Thane knows how to develope characters in such a way that they become real. None of her characters are hard to picture. The reader inevitabley weeps and laughs with the characters through their plights.

A superb telling of the story of the Star-Spangled Banner.......2002-10-04
I think the vast majorities of stories I have heard about how Francis Scott Key came to write the words of "The Star Spangled Banner" begin with Key being held as a prisoner on a British ship during the attack on Ft. McHenry. In "By the Dawn's Early Light: The Story of The Star Spangled Banner," author Steven Kroll begins with Key, a well-known Washington lawyer, being informed that Dr. William Beanes had been arrested by the British. It seems the doctor had been treating British wounded after the attack on Washington, D.C., and had some unruly stragglers arrested. Key gets permission from President Madison to try and affect the doctor's release.
Kroll's narrative follows the events from August 13, 1814, when Key was informed of Beanes's plight, to when Key's poem, originally called "The Defense of Fort McHenry," was published in the "Baltimore American." I like the way Kroll weaves all sort of historical details into his narrative, making this the most memorable account of the writing of the national anthem that I have come across. The story being told is complimented by the oil paintings of Dan Andreasen, which are done in a style reminiscent of what you found in classic children's books during the Fifties. There is also a photographic reproduction of the original manuscript of Key's poem that her wrote in a hotel after the battle.
In his Author's Note Kroll explains that it was the fort's storm flag, measuring 25 by 17 feet, that was flying overhead during the battle. The flag that was raised in celebration, as Key sailed back into Baltimore, was the larger, garrison flag for Ft. McHenry (both flags were made by Mary Pickersgill). When I last visited the Smithsonian Institute I was memorably surprised by the display of the Ft. McHenry flag, which, I assume, was the aforementioned storm flag. At least, that is how I would interpret what I have read; I might be wrong.

When financial analyst Sloane Ryder blows the whistle on an insider-trading scheme involving her boss at an investment banking firm, she also threatens the success of a traitorous plot hatched at the highest levels of government. Sloane gets fired after the corrupt CEO kills himself, but she's soon recruited by a mysterious government agency investigating payoffs to members of the president's inner circle--insiders who seek to thwart the president's China policy by any means possible, including murder.
This fast-paced, well-crafted thriller features the return of several characters from Shelby's earlier novels (Gatekeeper, Days of Drums), including intrepid Secret Servicewomen Holland Tylo and Hollis Fremont and their nemesis, the vicious assassin known as the Handyman. Without giving anything away, let it be said that the final turn in this twisty plot bodes well for Shelby's next book, as well as for the legion of fans who'll enjoy this one. --Jane Adams
Book Description
From Philip Shelby, the author of Gatekeeper ("action-packed" -- Chicago Tribune) who joined forces with Robert Ludlum to create the New York Times bestseller The Cassandra Compact, comes a new political thriller that ricochets across the world stage with relentless force.
After she's blackballed by Wall Street for exposing a powerful banker's corruption, Sloane Ryder is recruited by a covert government agency to hunt down moles and spies within the corridors of power. It seems to be the perfect job for the straight-shooting Sloane -- until a suspicious tip leads her to uncover a shocking conspiracy wrought by some of the most prominent figures in government. Their aim: assassinate the first woman president of the United States, whose policies could endanger their shadowy activities.
As Sloane frantically pieces together a series of strange but seemingly unrelated events, the trail leads her to the Handyman, an enigmatic killer-for-hire whose reputation is built on his unerring tenacity. Now, she finds herself caught in a deadly game of high-stakes international intrigue, in which the wrong move may be her last.

Shelby has done it again. First rate material. I could not put this down even in lieu of sleep. I had to get to the end to discover just how it all worked out with Sloane Ryder and the Handyman. Sloane Ryder is a very believable character. Enjoy this, but don't let it be your only Shelby read. Picked up Days of Drums in an airport somewhere in 98. Have been a committed Shelby reader since. Take the time to read them all Days of Drums, Last Rights, Gatekeeper
A Thrilling Plot to Assassinate the American President.......2002-08-02
Thrillers don't get much more intense than this one. Sloane Ryder is a New York financial analyst. She stumbles across dirty financial dealing in a major corporation and is fired and blacklisted for reporting it to the SEC. She despairs of finding a job, but is noticed and hired by a secret division of the General Accounting Office. It has detected some disturbing happenings involving the Chinese and high officials in the US government. Soon, with the help of Secret Servicewomen, Holland Tylo and Hollis Fremont, whom Shelby readers will recognize from previous books, an incredible plot emerges. The Chinese government intends to kill the American president and use the confusion as cover to conquer Taiwan. But as Sloane's unit closes in on the American traitors, the Handyman, a professional assassin hired by the Chinese, murders them. The action moves ever-faster to a breathtaking climax. This is a genuine thriller. I usually can put any book aside, no matter how thrilling, until I have time to read again, but I couldn't stop reading this one. Shelby has given us a first-rate story.

Book Description
"Hunts are best measured by the endurance of the memories they produce," E. Donnall Thomas Jr. writes in this, his first collection of waterfowling essays. He might have added that good books are likewise measured by how vivid, and how long, they remain in the mind of the reader. By Dawn's Early Light is a book that will stay with you long after you have read it. Though he has pursued big game, upland birds, and a variety of fish all over the world, Thomas reserves a special place in his heart for duck and goose hunting, That's because waterfowling is to him a uniquely American sport. A sport of home and hearth, of memories made even more poignant by the knowledge that the first light of dawn is fleeting and will not last. Thomas captures these moments so well that his memories become ours. (5 3/4 x 8 3/4, 200 pages, illustrations)

If you love hunting and the out doors then you will love By Dawn's Early Light. E. Donnall Thomas Jr. takes your breath away as the book captures your hert and imagination and takes you to a land full of ducks and a good time. To any any one who has eve hunted you will be astounded by how this book puts it like it is. I made the mistake of reading this book during the "off season" and had I had more money would have bought every thing I couldd find in the Cabela's magazine. This unfortunetly was not the case and I had to suffer through moths of not being able to hunt untill finaly my savior came in the form of a teal. This book perfecly sums up the thirl of the hunt, birds or no birds.

Book Description
Daniel Prentice's technological skill helped save the world from the deadly impact of Y2K in the popular thriller Flee the Darkness. But that victory didn't stop the encroaching evil.
In this gripping sequel, tension mounts in the 21st century as a Russion-Arab invasion of Jerusalem seems imminent. Now Daniel must guide NSA chief Captain Michael Reed in the battle ahead. More than a battle for the land, the offensive could be the fulfillment of Ezekiel's ancient biblical prophecy of Gog and Magog invading Israel. As the world shudders in response, the invaders offer Israel a choice: surrender or be obliterated.
As the State of Israel fortifies itself against the coming onslaught of missiles, biological weapons, and an invasion force attacking from all four borders, Reed and his Israeli counterpart, Sergeant Major Devorah Cohen, exhaust every military resource to prevent a nuclear war. Soon Reed and Cohen realize that the real battle they face is one of spiritual origin-for which no military drill could prepare them. Will Michael and Deborah find faith to confront the enemy?
Never have the forces of evil been stronger, the stakes higher, or the world's possible destruction nearer than By Dawn's Early Light.
Customer Reviews:
More depth than Left Behind but frustrating romance angle.......2005-03-14
Jeffrey's book is primarily an apocalyptic thriller, and on that score earns a 4+. The action and plot are fast-paced, much like the Left Behind series. However, the author's characters have much more depth. Michael and Devorah prove to be compassionate, intelligent, and interesting protaganists. The love-tension creates added suspense for much of the book. On the other side, the evil Russian general and his mistress, Alanna, offer the psychological insights that are masterful. We see inside the mind of grandiose bitterness in the general, and the emotional roller coaster of an amatuer mole with Alanna. Rich, addictive writing here!
My major complaint with Dawn's Early Light is that the last several chapters proved too long of an anti-climax. In fact, I sensed how things would pan out even before they did. Additionally, the tension-building forbidden love between Devorah and Michael proved interesting for awhile, but ultimately became frustrating. Jeffrey had a purpose for this element of the plot, but he overplayed it.
Bottom-line: This is an excellent novel, well worth reading. It's almost cheaper to buy it used than to spend gas going to the library to borrow it.
Good But In Error.......2002-09-27
The writing and story is actually very good, but because I believe that the authors underlying biblical views are in error, that it looses it's relevance.
Novel Surrounding Predicted Future Middle East Scenario........2002-02-10
A gripping and enjoyable account of possible world events surrounding the future invasion of Israel prophesied in the Book Of Ezekiel.
In this account Russian and Arab forces invade Israel amid the spectre of a nuclear holocaust, intent upon the eradication of the Jewish State.
Very timely and appropriate in view of current world events and very readable.
A pre-cursor to the follow-up entitled 'Spear Of Tyranny', which is based around events following the above invasion and the rise of the Anti-Christ and his one-world government/religion.
Both books are very enjoyable and will hold your attention from cover to cover.
Winner of the 2000 Christy Award for Excellence in Fiction!.......2001-06-15
By Dawn's Early Light is a wonderful read, convincing a panel of judges to award it the 2000 Christy award for excellence in Christian fiction in the end-times category. (BTW, I, for one, am tired of seeing inane reviews where someone who obviously hasn't not read the book trashes it just so he can praise WE ALL FALL DOWN.) By Dawn's Early LIght is a fast-paced, sensitive portrayal of end times--truly a winner! I love prophetic novels, have read several, and this is one of the best!
Not very good.......2001-06-11
I picked up this novel hoping that Jeffrey would offer up something new. New insight into Revelations, new thoughts about what it means to be a Christian, or just a new, exciting endtimes novel. Unfortunately, he accomplished none of that. Cashing in on a trend without the talent to pull it off doesn't strike me as the most Christian of endevours. If you're looking for a quality book about Revelations, try Brian Caldwell's We All Fall Down instead. It's intellegent, compelling, and utterly engrosing. It puts this book to shame.
