Book Description
DIRTY WOW WOW AND OTHER LOVE STORIES is a celebration of the lovey, binky, or blankie--known as the "transitional object" in psychoanalytic terms--that eased us through the uncertainties and loneliness of childhood. Bundles of comfort and security fashioned from fluff and fur, these treasured friends have a lifetime of stories sewn up in their tattered bodies: a trip to Paris smushed up in a suitcase, a new home behind the family liquor cabinet, an interminable wait in the lost-and-found bin. With stunning photographs that reveal the personalities within, DIRTY WOW WOW is at once humorous, wistful, and oddly comforting--like a shabby childhood favorite who's tucked away but never forgotten.

adorable.......2007-05-01
This book was alot of fun to read. It's interesting to hear about the trials and tribulations of other people's stuffed animals, blankies, etc. It also made you think about your own memories.
Oh the memories.......2007-04-10
I found this book at a bookstore and it caught my eye because of the stuffed animal on the cover...I have the same one, and he's in almost the same shape. This is a great little book to give to a friend or grown child who was known for carrying around some sort of blanket, stuffed animal, etc. Really cute little "stories" about the objects we loved to death as children.

Customer Reviews:
Intriguing.......2007-02-20
Stuart Woods writes very well and it's always a pleasure to read his work. This was especially interesting. My husband loves his books as well.
Not his best.......2006-08-17
I have enjoyed most, if not all, of Stuart Woods's books. Yes, they are light mysteries, but entertaining none-the-less. He has gone beyond himself when he wrote Dirty Work. Instead of the typical run-of-the mill murder mystery set in New York or LA, he has taken a step into international intrigue. Mr. Woods: watch out for that first step. This book demonstrates that he is not cut out for this genre. The plot is one-dimensional. The characters are like paper dolls, easily recognized and predictable. The dialogue is boring: `"You've got to stop this, Marie-Téresèse", he said."' His usual Manhattan travelogue with details of which direction one-way streets run, and which wines go with what foods just isn't enough to keep the reader's attention. I suggest that Mr. Woods stick to simple murder mysteries set in Manhattan or LA and leave the serious international intrigue to Daniel Silva or John Le Carre. He is not in their class and he never will be if he continues to spend the bulk of his time dining and drinking with New Yorkers and others who have second homes in Washington and Roxbury Connecticut.
More of the Same and It's Good.......2006-02-06
Woods' books are always fast, furious and exciting and that is why I have read so many of them. But at a point they seem to all be the same with different characters. Therefore, a few years ago I took a break from reading his books. In the past six months, I ventured back in and am very glad I have. He is not supplying life changing literature here but what he does provide is fast, exciting action that is very enjoyable. In this case, Stone Barrington is reacquainted with his long-lost flame, a new love interest involved with the district attorney office and a former CIA contact. All this revolves around a billionaire impressionist with very dark secrets. As expected, the book is fast with many plot turns and once again, I'm on the Stuart Woods' bandwagon. Great books for the beach or a plane!
I've sometimes wondered about.......2005-02-26
Stone Barrington's soul. I've read most of the books in this series, and sometimes, Stone decisions are right on the ethical/moral edge; especially the ones dealing with Arrington, the love of his life.
However, in DIRTY WORK, Stone's sense of right and wrong shows up early and stays through the last line. I loved the contrast between Felicity Carpenter's English approach and Stone's ethically correct rationale in dealing with a deadly and very smart assassin.
No spoilers here, but the ending was rather sad to me. However, Stone's moral compass was not bent or broken and it will live to serve him again.
Good riddance to Ms. Carpenter. Hope she stays on her side of the pond. :)
Than you, Mr. Woods, for diving below the surface.
Enjoy!
Great book, terrible reader!.......2004-12-03
Robert Lawrence is a horrid reader for the Stone Barrington series. His British accents are laughable, and he makes all of his characters (especially Dino, Stone's best friend) sound like morons. He even makes Stone, himself, sound like an unsophisticated jerk. I was very disappointed.

Book Description
21 Dirty Tricks at Work is about lies. The type of underhand, pernicious and downright Machiavellian scheming that goes on in business every day. An estimated £7.8bn is lost each year in the UK alone though unnecessary and counter-productive office politicking. But 21 Dirty Tricks at Work is also a book of hope. It exposes the classic manoeuvres and gives practical advice on dealing with them to the vast majority who just want to do a good day's work.
21 Dirty Tricks at Work provides you with all the information you need to spot negative tactics and self-interested strategies. It shows you how to spot the games frequently being played and how to come out with your credibility intact and your sanity preserved.
So, if you are fed-up of being on the receiving end of constant backbiting and skulduggery from workmates, join hands with the authors and get Machiavelli on the run!

At last a book with practical help.......2006-05-11
If you only read one book on office politics, this has to be it! Unlike so many other titles this avoids generalization and provides clear guidance on what to do about specific tactics used by others to get ahead of you. Absolutely packed with great questions that you can use straight away.
The book I was looking for all along.......2006-05-01
I must've read a stack of "office politics" books before I got to this one.
All the bits and pieces of useful information I managed to collect from the total of them were covered in the first chapter of this book.
This gets straight down to business. The dirty trick and how to counter it.

Lorenzo the Conqueror.......2006-09-01
Kevin Eastman is a shrewd man. Lorenzo Sperlonga was already a rising star when he approached Eastman (publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine, inventor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, husband to the absurdly beautiful Penthouse model and artist's muse, Julie Strain) to ask him if: "he would mind looking at some of his work." Eastman knew what he had in Sperlonga. Now, many of us know as well, from sea to shining sea. This is the second book of Lorenzo's incredible works to be released. The most beautiful women in the world are not the stick figures in Vogue, they are the beauties in between the covers of this new book. If you like your nude ladies in Sci-fi scenarios, modern settings, or fantasy and even humorous, you can have it all. Two words that could be used to describe Lorenzo's style are diverse, and imaginative. There is an incredible rendition of a woman in leather and chains hanging on a trellis called "Ivy", that is so photorealistic you will wonder if it is a painting at all. The detail in the trellis is incredible just on its own. This is one erotic and highly imaginative piece of work! Another pin-up, called "Thorns", looks like it should be on the side of an old World War Two fighter jet. Lorenzo's work shifts easily from futuristic to the Old West, forever stimulating the senses. There are many great artists of this genre but Lorenzo Sperlonga is somehow beyond the genre. His work is provocative and exciting on numerous levels. The first book is also awesome (check out my review) and hinted at things to come from this evolving artist. In the back of this book is a glimpse into the artist's personal life with photographs of family and friends. One of the photographs is of soldiers in Iraq enjoying posters from this book. What a beautiful footnote to this stylish book. Nobody does it quite like Lorenzo, and this collection is a must have.

Book Description
Dirty Work is the story of two men, strangers—one white, the other black. Both were born and raised in Mississippi. Both fought in Vietnam. Both were gravely wounded. Now, twenty-two years later, the two men lie in adjacent beds in a VA hospital.Over the course of a day and a night, Walter James and Braiden Chaney talk of memories, of passions, of fate.
With great vision, humor, and courage, Brown writes mostly about love in a story about the waste of war.
Customer Reviews:
Southern Wambaugh.......2007-02-22
This period of the south and the steamy afternoons of country drama play all the cards for Family, Patriotism, Race, Class and long forgotten prejudices. Joseph Wambaugh took the rural north for a journey and recently departed Larry Brown does the same for the northern reaches of Mississippi. Not an easy book to put down and not an easy set of emotions to find comfort in. Much like the works of author & Tennessee Sheriff David Hunter's works the less pleasant and the un-glossed image of the south remains.
You Will Remember This Book.......2006-03-08
I'm new to reviewing books on Amazon and have started out with reviews of my newest favorite author, Larry Brown. For great southern storytelling I love Brown's books "Fay", "Joe" and "Father and Son", and if you are a fan of any of those you probably love them for the same reason I do. But it's what is in "Dirty Work" that proves that Larry Brown was one of the very very best. I didn't know where I'd land once I started reading this book, but it took me to places that just astonished me. The narrative changes in its chapters never became stale or contrived and the development of the characters through thoughts and minimal expression is masterful. It's a powerful book.
A most personal, touching story about the tragedy of war.......2005-03-11
If you're prepared to step into a not-so-well-known zone of emotion, turmoil, introspection, strife, heartbreak, and seemingly infinite, dogged self-questioning, then this story may begin to have a lasting effect on you. It is a brief but powerful exploration into a tumultuous, emotional maelstrom about men who have been at war and live its most personal aftermaths. This novel absorbs you, and if you are so inclined, produces an empathetic connection with you that may take a while, if it ever does, for you to break.
Dirty Work is a glimpse at a pivotal moment in the lives of two men who are seemingly brought together for an important purpose. Both are victims of war through devastating wounds; physical, mental, and emotional; and are also victims of the aftermath of their recoveries. They each lived through their physical injuries but found, alas, that their survival placed them in another type of war; a war waged in the way that people react to them and in how they are expected to act around them.
Being from different races and backgrounds, the main characters, Braiden and Walter, irreparably scarred by the Vietnam conflict, are brought together in the confines of a veterans' hospital and are initially wary of each other. But as they soon discover very quickly through their stories to one another, quickly imparting emotional and unspoken understandings, they are bound to form a special bond for a special purpose.
The short time period covered in the "present" part of this story is told amidst non-stop, brief volleys of story swapping and philosophizing from Braiden and Walter. They speak of times when they were young, while in the war, about times after their war experiences, and about their present circumstances. Their exchanges are gripping, and you come to know each of these men at a level that gives you something akin to an emotional bond with them. They stay with you long after you close the back cover of the book.
Dirty Work Indeed.......2000-09-29
I'm a stone sucker for gritty Vietnam tales and don't care whether they are fantasy or realism, as long as someone is holding in their innards with a sweaty bandanna or emptying their 60 into the trees. In this novel, Brown goes where other writers like Robert Stone, Thom Jones and Bill Shields also go; things get ugly, they go to hell through nobody's fault, luck and Jesus run out at the same time. On paper, the plot seems somewhat hackneyed - the short-fuse father who ends up in the Big House, the school bullies, the Vietnam ambush scenes, etc. But Brown makes it work. We want to know what both of the main characters are thinking. Even more interesting than any of this is the budding relationship between the protagonist and another wrecked soul who sells him the beer that blunts his pain. Although the early Cuckoo's Nest reference telegraphs the ending somewhat, this book reads quick and rough, like the first elementary school beating I ever took. Recommended.
Damn........1999-11-20
Brown opens with a reference to "Johnny Get Your Gun," and the novel definitely contains parallels, but his pacing, characters and dialogue are far and away reason enough to pick this up. Like Thom Jones and Tim O'Brien, Brown elicits my great thanks and praises to both vets and the fact that I was born in 1972.

Are you sick of turning your underwear pink and finding freshly washed tissue bits all over your new jeans? Perhaps it's time to investigate the deeper mysteries of the laundry room. There's more to clean clothes than soap and water, and Linda Cobb is willing to get down to the nitty-gritty in her simple, straightforward Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean. No question is too small for the Queen--she tackles everything from stinky shoes to starched collars.
Each short chapter concerns a specific topic, starting with the care and cleaning of the washing and drying machines themselves. Who knew the washer needed regular cleaning? A short section on line drying is included here as well; never again will you ponder the proper way to hang hand-washed slacks. Most of the chapters are devoted to various types of special problems, such as colors that ran, stain and odor removal, and cleaning large items like bedspreads and lampshades. Explanations for when to dry-clean and how to make your own spot cleaners using household items like club soda, cream of tartar, and denture-cleaning tablets are also included, alongside ironing techniques and the definitive way of color sorting. Particularly helpful are the A-to-Z guides to fabric care and stain removal at the end of the book. Each type of fabric--from delicates like chiffon and velvet to rugged corduroy and denim--has a preferred treatment and certain chemicals that it just can't handle. Talking Dirty Laundry will give you optimal cleaning results--whether you got chocolate on your khakis or wine on your wool, you'll have the problem solved before you can say, "Shout it out!" --Jill Lightner

This explains how to do laundry so easily! Get stains out, ect. This book has helped my laundry doing greatly within the past month!
A Recommendation for Kelly Kline from Coplay, PA.......2002-08-29
Hi Kelly: You wrote that this book didn't have a solution for GRASS STAINS, so I thought of you when I saw Linda Cobb's other book called "A Queen for All Seasons: A Year of Tips, Tricks, and Picks for a Cleaner House and a More Organized Life!"
In this book it states the following: (Just ONE of the things in this book.)
Spring: Garden the natural way...allergy-proof your home...banish GRASS STAINS...color your Easter eggs....
SO....I thought you might like to get this book to help with some of those grass stains we all know kids are very good at getting ground into clothes. You didn't have your email address so I could write you......so I hope you see this recommendation.
Wonderful book!.......2002-05-18
I found so much useful information in this book! I really enjoy it and use it often. I appreciate the fact that most of her cleaning solutions are non-toxic as I have a 2 year old at home.
I found that baking soda WILL unclog a drain (combined with a few other things) :) In fact baking soda by itself will clean quite a bit of your home.
Helpful.......2002-04-07
This book offers helpful tidbits. One should always take precautions before doing a lot of this tips at home. Not everything is for everybody. If you have children with allergies or smaller children, you should take more precautions. The book is helpful, but some things in this book is basic common sense.
Disappointing.......2001-11-16
I saw this book on Oprah. If she recommends it, it must be good, right? Wrong. The book doesn't deliver what it promises. Common stains are not always included. I assume that Oprah recommended it because (of course) she doesn't do her own laundry and would have no way of judging the quality of this kind of book for those of us who do not have hired help.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous plays!.......2006-12-23
This book is a wonderful collection of plays written by the brilliant intellect of Sartre. It is an essential reading for the philosopher at heart.
Beautiful melancholy.......2006-11-26
Sartre is sometimes given a reputation that far precedes him, as with many Nobel recipients. These plays are a testament against the skeptic's mindset.
"No Exit" is a modern-day interpretation of the antiquated "fire and brimstone" hell we are so accustomed to hearing about. Sartre adroitly picks up on the small idiosyncracies of human behavior and capitalizes on them with his version of hell. Three incompatible personalities are locked in a hot, stuffy hotel room for eternity, unable to get along with one another or reconcile their personal differences. The lights are always a bit too bright, the furniture a bit too stiff, and the wonder at "what lies down the hall" eats at the occupants for eternity. This is a far cry from biblical interpretations of hell, where an individual can mentally will themselves against pain. Instead, Sartre focuses on the interpersonal nature of unhappiness, and gives his spirits "one of those days" for eternity.
"Dirty Hands" is perhaps my favorite piece of literature. It plants its focus on a young intellectual revolutionary intent on assassinating a corrupt party leader. As he grows closer to Hoederer, the man he is sent to kill, he comes to realize that pure intellectual theories will always become muddied in the waters of reality.
"The Respectful Prostitute" depicts a young woman, a prostitute, who spends the night with a man who turns out to be a politician. The man completes his sordid mission, but the next morning scorns the woman. An lesson in objectivity and the two-faced nature of those who tend to preach loudly.
"The Flies" is set in Ancient Greece, but possesses Sartre's aptitude for human behavior. Just as good as all the others, though not as indicative of how humans behave.
These are all plays, making them quite easy to read. The characters are not hard to keep straight. The ease of reading doesn't detract from their literary quality. These four plays are elegant simplicity at its finest.
"The folk of Argos are my folk. I must open their eyes.".......2006-08-04
I have read this little collection countless times over the years. I have seen Huit Clos (No Exit) performed several times (generally poorly) but it has never quite lived up to the power that I find in the written version. I realize that this is unusual for a play, and may reflect a fault in Sartre's work rather than a strength.
It is important to remember, however, that Sartre's work is always more about the ideas behind it than it is about the form he is using. Sartre wrote novels, plays, essays, and criticism during his long career. Through it all, he was a philosopher-- struggling with the notion of freedom and indifference.
People (particularly students) tend to stop with No Exit, neglecting its less famous cousins. This is a shame, as both The Flies and Dirty Hands are fascinating pieces. Particularly if you have an interest in the Oresteia then The Flies is a wonderful interpretation.
A must read book.
good but not great.......2006-07-09
These four plays were good plays- they are easier to understand if one is familiar with Sartre's philosophy. The plots in all these plays were both unique and exciting yet at times, especially in dirty hands and the flies, the plays seem to drag on and on. Had the plays been shorter, Sartre's main point would have been made clearer and more forcefully. In plays, it's hard to communicate character background yet with a novel the author can just describe it from third-person perspective. I think perhaps these plays would have been more successful and more dramatic had they been written as short novels with more description and character analysis. At times I felt that the characters were explored and described in superfical ways. All in all, these were good plays yet I cant say I loved them. This might just be me though since I have never been too fond of the format of plays- i feel like it never gets to the heart of the character since you only get dialogue with little analysis.
Hell is other people, and they exist to torture you........2005-10-13
This book is an answer to a question many people have been avoiding all their lives. And when you finally develop the ability to ask it to yourself, Sartre provides his suggested answer for you, though it may not be the answer you wanted.
The premise of the main play, "No Exit", is that many people have chosen to exist in misery, even when the exit to that misery presents itself clearly. For these people, there is "no exit". Their existance is defined by their misery. If they make the concious decision to exit, then they have nothing to live for.
All four plays are written in non-pretentious and easy to understand styles, unlike many philisophical writings. They don't require a great deal of effort to read or understand. In fact, they are quite enjoyable and I found myself reading each play many times before moving on to the next one.
Don't expect to feel uplifted about the state of humanity while reading these plays, however. Sartre's message about human existance can be a dismal one. It is quite helpful, though, to come to terms with the fact that many of our fellow humans are just puzzled about their lives, and sharing a social existance with these people can be precarious to your own search for meaning.

Idiotic.......2007-06-26
I completely agree with the reviewer who pointed out the idiocy of this book. Nearly all of the suggestions in this book fall into two categories: 1) things we've all heard or read a million times before; 2) things that are so stupid that they're obviously space filler (e.g., when staying at a hotel, tell the staff NOT to serve you room service no matter what you say. Tell them you'll sign a contract if needed ---Is the author kidding me!!??).
Please don't waste your money on this. It's garbage.
Book balm for dieters.......2003-10-16
An offbeat treat for the chronically weight-challenged, Ms. Bodger's book is balm for the souls of those of us who daily go forth, engaged in the battle of the bulge .
Tips and "tricks" are generously leavened with gently wicked wit and humor, but the overall message is one we all need to hear, and often: Fat or thin, beauty comes from within, and we're each endowed with our own unique loveliness. The book exhorts us to lighten up on ourselves, to love and accept ourselves the way we are this moment, while still being open to improvement.
Good on ya, Ms. Bodger!
For the most part, this book was awful........2003-03-20
At first, this book was fine. Some of the tips were helpful and meaningful, but after reading several pages I found this book was not serious. Being an overweight person actually looking for helpful ideas, I do not need to be told to "stand next to fatter people" so that I may look thinner. Or better yet, "buy larger furniture so I look smaller." Some of her ideas were outrageous and down right idiotic. Being a heavy person who needs motivation, I found this book highly offensive and I do not recommend it to those really trying to lose weight.
Little Book of Dirty Diet "GEMS".......2002-06-14
Keep this book near and dear to your heart fellow dieters. (And near to your your refrigerator as well!) It can save you endless hours, days, months, and yes, years of dieting! Look and feel thin the easier way. Carole Bodger is not only a genius, but a heroine to all the "fat at heart".
A "must have" for your bookshelf.
"Dirty Diets" Done Darn Well.......2002-06-11
The title is a bit misleading. These aren't "dirty tricks" at all, they're actually really clever and really funny tips that any man, woman or child can use to look a little slimmer. And today, not after a month of exercising your sweat glands dry and eating nothing but tofu salad. I think the best thing about it is that you want to keep reading it over and over. It's not some boring diet book that you'll add to your shelf of diet books and forget. There are tips in the book for every aspect of life and you'll want to keep it handy for every occasion.

Highly Recommended.......1998-02-06
This collection is an unusually fine collection of stories, all by Pat Cadigan. The element that makes it exceptional is the synergy between the stories, the additional insights and connections that you make because you are reading the stories together. Several of these were stories I had read before, in magazines or other anthologies; in every case, I found new depths, new meanings, new illuminations of the weirdness of the human condition when I re-read them in the 'Cadigan context.'
