Book Description
Three thrilling titles from one of America's most popular bestselling authors, together in a special value collection.
A Time to Kill - For ten days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own...
The Firm - When Mitch McDeere, an ambitious law student from Harvard chooses the Memphis tax firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke, he finds himself caught between the FBI, who wants an informant inside the firm, and the firm itself, which will make him a very rich man-or a very dead one.
The Client - This is the story of eleven-year-old Mark Sway, who witnessed the bizarre suicide of a New Orleans attorney. Just before he dies, the lawyer tells Mark a deadly secret concerning the recent murder of a Louisiana senator whose accused killer, Mafia thug Barry Muldanno, is about to go to trial.

Good listening, shoddy packaging.......2007-04-24
I always enjoy Grisham's way with words & a story, even if they're dated, & the three readers plus the fade out music are enthralling, however, RandomHouse Audio made a booboo with the packaging I received. The Firm discs (4-6) are correctly labeled & slotted, while A Time to Kill (discs 1-3) & The Client (discs 7-11) are mislabeled & mis-slotted. Bummer, especially if you're driving while listening.
GREAT VALUE COLLECTION FROM GRISHAM.......2005-09-06
I HAD SEEN ALL OF THESE IN MOVIE FORM AND WANTED TO SEE HOW CLOSE THE MOVIE SCRIPT WAS TO EACH GRISHAM NOVEL IN THIS COLLECTION. THEY WERE REALLY CLOSE TO THE REAL GRISHAM! BUT AGAIN HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE ON GRISHAM'S WORK? I ENJOYED ALL THREE
AND ESPECIALLY THE READERS WITH THEIR INFLECTIONS! THEY SOUNDED
ALMOST LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIES. ANYTHING GRISHAM
HAS IN AUDIO I WILL CERTAINLY OBTAIN. THANKS TO AMAZON FOR YOUR WONDERFUL WEB SITE TO PURCHASE SUCH GREAT PRODUCTS.
Great airplane/road trip listen!.......2005-08-03
I had seen all these movies, so I thought I'd give this set a chance. The price is a steal! All 3 narrators do an excellent job, and the stories will certainly keep your attention. I would recommend this especially for trips. I plan to buy more John Grisham audio books in the future!
GRRREEAAATTTTT!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-12
The book's setting is in a small town in Mississippi. Tonya, one day, went for a walk to the town market to fetch some things for her mother. On her way home, two men pick her up. They take her to the woods and rape her. When they're done the leave her on a bridge, beat up and ready to die. She is later returned to her family by a group of black fishermen. Tonya's father, Carl Lee, decides he needs to get revenge for his daughter. So when they are in court about this whole thing, Carl Lee catches the men in a stairwell ant the courthouse and blows them away with an M-16. The fight now is if Carl Lee is guilty or not. He has to face an all white court (whom are prejudice) and plead not guilty. We'll see what happens
A TIME TO KILL.......2000-10-05
NICK FRANCISCO PERIOD 2
"A Time to Kill" is John Grisham's first novel. His fluid, detailed storytelling is unlike the choppy first attempts of many modern authors. In a small town in the Deep South, two redneck hooligans rape and maim a ten-year-old black girl. Enraged, the girl's father, Carl Lee Hailey, takes justice into his own hands, killing the two rapists in a courthouse shooting. He seeks the help of defense lawyer Jake Brigance to save him from the gas chamber.
Brigance, a young but sharp lawyer, has to find a way to win an impossible case: a black man is on trial for killing two white men, and his case is being heard by an all-white jury. Adding to the mix are violence between the Ku Klux Klan and the black community, and the fact that, during the shooting, Carl Lee had injured a sheriff's deputy.
When I first read this novel, I was angered and irritated by the depth of hatred that exists within racism. I was angered that had Carl Lee been a white man bent on avenging his daughter's suffering, he would never have had to face trial. The rape of ten year old Tanya, Carl Lee's daughter, by Billy Ray and Pete, A Time to Kill is a disturbing novel, aside from the raping and killing that opens the tale. It is not possible to look at our justice system the same way, especially from the viewpoint of the black community in the South.

Hard to believe, but there was a time when the word "lawyer" wasn't synonymous with "criminal," and the idea of a law firm controlled by the Mafia was an outlandish proposition. This intelligent, ensnaring story came out of nowhere--Oxford, Mississippi, where Grisham was a small-town lawyer--and quickly catapulted to the top of the bestseller list, with good reason. Mitch McDeere, the appealing hero, is a poor kid whose only assets are a first-class mind, a Harvard law degree, and a beautiful, loving wife. When a Memphis law firm makes him an offer he really can't refuse, he trades his old Nissan for a new BMW, his cramped apartment for a house in the best part of town, and puts in long hours finding tax shelters for Texans who'd rather pay a lawyer than the IRS. Nothing criminal about that. He'd be set for life, if only associates at the firm didn't have a funny habit of dying, and the FBI wasn't trying to get Mitch to turn his colleagues in. The tempo and pacing are brilliant, the thrills keep coming, and the finish has a wonderful ironic flourish. It's not hard to see why Grisham changed the genre permanently with this one, and few of his colleagues in a very crowded field come close to equaling him. --Jane Adams
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
D.W. Moffett uses his youthful voice to outstanding effect in this excellent abridgment of Grisham's bestselling thriller about a Harvard Law grad aggressively recruited by a curiously obscure firm. "We're small and very selective... we screened over two thousand third-year law students at the best schools. Only one letter was sent." They've decided he's their man and to get him they offer top dollar, dangle a BMW, and woo his wife with offers impossible to refuse. But as the wide-eyed youngsters soon discover, there's a catch. Moffett gives an excellent performance, bringing the story to life with vibrant and believable characterizations and a smooth, knowing narrative. (Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
Three CDs, 3 hrs.
performance by D.W. Moffett
Mitchell McDeere, raised in the coal-mining region of rural Kentucky, has worked hard to get where he is: third in his class at Harvard Law. He's young. He's bright. He's ambitious. Mitch could have the pick of the big firms in New York and Chicago, but he's chosen the Memphis tax firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke. They're selective. They pay outrageous salaries. They have a turnover rate of zero. And Mitch is about to find out why.
Several events fuel Mitch's growing suspicions: two of the partners die in a suspicious diving accident off Grand Cayman; the senior partners seem unduly proud of the fact that no one has ever resigned; and security measures at the office are, even for a company with billionaire clients, more than a little extreme. Then Mitch makes an explosive discovery: The firm is owned and operated by the most powerful organized crime family in Chicago. Even as Mitch discovers the truth, he finds himself caught between the FBI, who wants an informant inside the firm, and the firm itself, which will make him a very rich man—or a very dead one.

Grisham At His Best.......2007-03-11
John Grisham has written many books since he began his writing career, but 'The Firm' is still by far his best piece of work. In fact, it's the best legal thriller I've read. If you're looking for a good book that will hook you right from the start. You've found it. 5 stars.
My review of "The Firm".......2007-02-27
In my opinin the book "The Firm" by John Grisham is very interesting and exciting. I liked some exciting scenes like when Abby and Tammy are coping the files on Grand Cayman. I also think that the book is more exciting than the movie because the book has a better ending. The movie's ending is a happy ending the book's ending isn`t good or bad. It is unsure what will happen to Mitch and Abby and you want to read more to find out.
The only thing I did not like about "The Firm" is that it has many pages and you need much time to read it.
All in all, my opinion is, that "The Firm" is very good not only for people interested in law.
A Solid, Firm Thriller.......2007-02-04
I have never been a reader of Mr. Grisham's work before so this was my introduction to it and I must say that it doesn't disappoint. The story starts out a tad slow, but easily slides into mystery and danger as Mitchell Y. McDeere falls unwittingly into a law firm run by the mafia. They pay too well and keep you busy and don't let you ask questions, then when you're a partner you're in too deep they tell you straight out what you're doing. So you keep your eyes forward and just make money until retirement. Not Mitch, though. An FBI agent finds him quickly enough and tells him not to trust anyone. Pretty soon Mitch is in a struggle between both sides and each side has him by the proverbial jewels. IT kept me up late on several nights until the very end. There wasn't an incredible amount of closure, but that doesn't stop it from being a great read. Now I'm after Grisham's The Client and I'm hoping it will be as good. Happy reading.
One of the greatest print thrillers I've ever read.......2007-01-31
I heard of Grisham when I read "The Firm"; at this time, I had yet to see any of the movies based on his novels. This book made me a Grisham fan immediately.
From the first page, I was hooked in this novel, and it never released its grip. I did find the ending disappointing, but I thought it was excellent.
A Penny for Your Book.......2007-01-28
So...um...yeah. I have to admit that I read this mass-marketed, waste-of-forest-and-trees, low-brow, putrid-excuse-for-"literature" recently. (I won't, however, admit (wink, wink) that I've read something even worse--Nora Robert's "Summer Pleasures"--oh literary critics and those with a fine taste for Literature as Art, Literature as Religion, Literature as Being, do forgive my temporary jaunt into depravity!). And you know what...? It was pretty good. Don't be mistaken: by 'good' I don't mean 'good good', but rather 'good like hot rock therapy' or 'good like a magic show'. It's soothing and escapist, relaxing and invigorating, entertaining and perplexing, hyperbolic and absurd. This is why Grisham is a genius. Well...not really a genius, but a fantastic writer of suspense fiction that almost, but not quite, makes a pretense to being 'good good'. His plot is meticulously strung like a strand of Christmas lights. His characters are well-developed, but not overdrawn. He is a virtuouso of tempo. The only thing he lacks is style. This is why he's a genre writer and not a literary innovator, a true creator--a William Faulkner-type hero who will be taught in American Fiction classes until the end of America. But I like to think had Grisham not been hungry for commercial success and greedy for material gain, he could have been a great writer. "Yes, but," one might say, "a master of a formula is still a master." Touche.

Book Description
When it was first erected, the House of Seven Gables typified the mechanical Colonel Pyncheon; but it developed through the years until, by Hepzibah's time, it has become humanized and almost organic. The history of the house is thus a record of continuity and change. Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables is a study of guilt and renewal from generation to generation. At the time of the Salem witch trials, the patriarch of the Pyncheons covets the property of a tradesman and manipulates public opinion so as to get Matthew Maule hanged for witchcraft and acquire the land. The dying man's curse on the Pyncheon family comes true generation upon generation and relationships between the families are colored forever by this "original sin." That is, until six generations later when the long-hidden truth is revealed.
The House of the Seven Gables is Hawthorne's most humorous novel, it is also the work in which he is most serious in his devotion to the powers of beauty and imagination and his hatred of economic materialism and Philistinism.

the book was packed very well and i would not think twice to order another book from them. THANKS
Fabulous Hawthorne.......2007-02-14
What a great book. In truth, I found The Scarlet Letter a little hard to read, though I can appreciate its merit. This novel, however, kept me involved from start to finish and the symbolism in the text is so rich that one could read HSOG twenty times and discover something new each time.
Hawthorne is really dealing with appearances in this text but is also suggesting the step toward modernity with the advent of the railway and electricity, things still "novel" at the time of writing. HSOG spurns tradition in many ways and lays bear the faults of an aristocratic society.
This is a small book, but very dense. A rewarding classic without question.
classics.......2006-11-03
House of Seven Gables was mandatory reading in high school. I have been out of school for many years and have been reading the "classics" again. I am enjoying them so much. I will be adding this to my Grandchildren's library and who knows someday they may enjoy these books as much as I have. pb
A Very Nathaniel Hawthorne Book.......2006-07-09
As this book followed Hawthorne's succesful "The Scarlet Letter," there is no wonder that it carries the strong Hawthorne sentiments of mysteriousness and guilt. Although the whole book is ridden by an apparently dire mood, the gradual but sure development of the highly original plot makes the book an important addition to one's literary knowledge. Hawthorne himself appears to have summed up the story in his introduction, but the conclusion of the novel is not what one would expect.
Come home!.......2006-05-25
To those who approach "classics" with trepidation, I heartly recommend House of the Seven Gables. Not only the characters but the very house come alive, in all their splendor and in all their shortcomings.
Cousin Hepzibah Pynchon stands as one of the most pitiful but admirable characters of fiction. The befuddled Clifford, the mysterious Holgrave, and the sweet Phoebe come alive to the reader. Even the house itself has a life and a spirit.
Come home to the House of the Seven Gables.

The buzz about The ebay Phenomenon
Customer Reviews:
Dull book with little information.......2002-10-22
If you have no idea what Internet is and have never seen ebay web site then you might learn something from this book. But for an average Internet-savvy person it offers little to nothing. There is a lengthy description of well-know information (like terms of sale of ebay) and constant selling of ebay business model: nothing you can't read elsewhere.
so and so.......2002-08-08
The author "gets" eBay. Unfortunately, he was not granted interviews or access to eBay people. As a result, the book is little more than a collection of articles from the Industry Standard, Fast Company abd the like. Furthermore, the book covers eBay until December 1999 or Q1 2001 at most. Back then, it looked like Yahoo! had a business model, remember? And yes, the author contemplates the possibility of a Yahoo! takeover (which was possible) and even the ridiculous idea that eBay should perhaps create its own "portal" in order to grow... Not worth the money. Buy "The Perfect Store" by Adam Cohen instead.
Not much meat.......2001-02-06
This book gives an overview of ebay's creation and why it has been a success. It gives no insider insights however. It was fun to read but I did not learn much from it. This book does not have substance.
A poor read.......2000-12-31
This book is basically a series of quoted and sited magazine articles hastily cobbled together into a book. The only "real" interviews done by the author are with a few eBay customers who use the site. The author admits no one with eBay granted him an interview or let him in the building. For a much better story of how eBay came to be, read eBoys by Robert Stross.
Sold!!.......2000-10-26
This book basically delivers what it promises to. Lots of somewhat dry facts about how a small Internet business boomed into one of the hottest "sites" available.
I am a big Ebay fan. I wanted to find out more about the people who created Ebay but also wanted to get a feel for the direction these people were hoping to guide the future of the site to.
Although I thought the story was fairly interesting, this book was very dryly written. Not much was cited other than the absolute bare bones facts and the writing was not particularly interesting.
While I realize this is a business book, I think there was much room for interesting tidbits, advice or funny stories. None here. Too bad...

Customer Reviews:
Hey, what about those who don't practice personal injury?.......2002-02-01
These CD's were completely geared toward marketing to the general public. They would be great for those who have a general practice, family, estate, or personal injury clientele. However, most of the author's advice does not really apply to those of us with savvy professionals for clients. I practice Creditor Rights Litigation. Most of the CD's just did not apply to getting corporations and businesses as clients. It was, however, entertaining and fast moving. It gave lots of great information. I just got sort of sick of hearing the author blather on about her own personal injury practice.

There is nothing more helpful for anyone taking on a challeging task such as marketing a law practice than having a checklist approach in an organized and motivating format especially for attorneys. Cindy Speaker has delivered -- her three-CD set is an incredible value at $59 (it's worth much more) and identifies the key marketing and business development topics in addition to how to approach them with interesting discussion of her in-depth research and practical examples which may be put to use every day. No attorney, law firm marketing director or business development manager can afford not to listen to these CD's over and over again -- it is a must-have "bible" for law practices in my opinion.

Hurt His Case, IMO.......2005-07-17
Let me preface this review by saying that I am a conservative. I am a Christian (both of which can easily be verified by reading my other reviews). And until I read this book, I wanted to like Dan Quayle. He always seemed like the media's whipping boy, like the guy that couldn't get a fair shake. I remember watching Rush Limbaugh's TV show and seeing Slick Willy laughing at a funeral, and then after spotting a camera instantaneously becoming very sad. I wanted to know why other politicians weren't hounded like Quayle was?
Unfortunately, Dan answered this question in his book: he really is as the media presents him. The media paints Quayle as a guy who's smarter than average, conservative, and something of a mistake-making dufus. I found nothing in the book to refute this portrait. Quayle goes into gaff after goof that he made in a very short time period, and one comes away seeing that, yes, he really does have a problem that would be the death of any politician. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure Mr. Quayle is much smarter that I will ever be; he's probably also more charismatic, well connected, financially secure, etc.
But none of these things can save Dan from himself. He's the Yogi Berra of politicians, and you can't blame the media for jumping on the chance to make a few dollars off of his persona. Mr. Quayle's a capitalist and a conservative, surely he understands that? (though, of course, he could point out the hypocrisy in the media's claim to be unbiased, when they have biases just like the rest of us)
I don't know why, but it seems like conservative politicians--e.g., Quayle, Gingrich, Keyes, etc.--have self-imploded any time they have been given a chance to do well. Meanwhile, conservative pundits--e.g., Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.--have done astronomically well when given the chance. I suppose the Republican party needs another man like Reagan, who can be a bit of everything at the same time, and still come off as seeming like much more than just the sum of his parts.
Whatever the case in real life may be, I do admit that I found this book to be somewhat entertaining (if somewhat self-promoting, as most biographies are). Unfortunately, the let down that came from realising that Quayle had hurt his own case made this book very unlikable in my own eyes. It's never pleasant to see someone shoot themselves in the foot.
More elephant than Quayle.......2000-08-25
Perhaps it is appropriate that Dan Quayle belongs to the GOP because in his public life he has displayed elephantine qualities-strength, courage, decency, loyalty, love of family and an ability to fight back from adversity. His book, Standing Firm, reflects his values. From the searing media attacks of the 1988 campaign, lack of support from GOP heavyweights like Jim Baker, and the bruising vice -presidential debates of that era, Quayle would have been less than human if he had not been unsettled. He admits that in that early period he quit trusting in himself. For some liberals he would never be trusted. In refusing to bow to trendy positions Quayle continued to attract odium.Yet, in his defence of the traditional family over the 'Murphy Brown position' he espoused eternal values. Some of his critics preferred to concentrate on his incorrect spelling of potato! ( Well, the rest of the English speaking world has always known that Americans are funny spellers-big deal!) In reading this book you quickly discover Quayle is a values-driven politician. Precisely because of the poverty of values amongst today's elites Quayle's views will continue to be ridiculed despite the fact that he articulates the views of middle America. This book give some idea of the challenges and loneliness that a Veep faces, particularly one under constant media pressure. In standing firm to his values Dan Quayle fought back-his performance in the 1992 vice-presidential debate (against Al Gore) mirrored the increased assurance of the man-and this book should be reflected on by his fellow Americans and perhaps those further afield.
A book of insight and candor - not to be missed........1999-06-26
Rarely do the media and the entertainmenr business ravage a person as thoroughly as they did Dan Qauyle. Everyone thinks that they know who Quayle is, but by the time that I was done reading this book, I felt as though he were my long lost uncle. His insights are uncompromising and clear, and he places blame where it should be in every instance, sometimes on the media, sometimes on his political opponents, sometimes on President Bush, and sometimes with himself. Quayle is honest with himself and his readers, making no unecessary apologies for the decisions that he has made or the reasons that he made them. He makes no bones about the influences in his life, starting with his God. Once a skeptic, I am now a full-fledged Quayle supporter, and I will patiently explain to anyone who says anything nasty about him that they simply need to find out what they are really talking about before they open their mouth. Reading this book is a good place to start.
