A scholarly, in-depth study of death and burial practices.......2003-06-21
Roll Back The Stone: Death And Burial In The World Of Jesus by Byron R. McCane (Academic Director of the Sepphoris Excavations in Northern Israel, and Chair of Religion & Philosophy at Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina) is a scholarly, in-depth study of death and burial practices in ancient Palestine during the Roman and Byzantine periods. From scrutinizing traditional Jewish death rituals; to a specific study of Jesus Christ's burial; to relocations of the dead in early Byzantine Palestine; and much, much more, Roll Back the Stone is a highly scholarly and strongly recommended contribution to both academic Biblical Archaeology collections and New Testament Studies supplemental reading lists for laymen.

interesting subject.......2006-06-10
I thought this book was interesting and it helped to answer some questions. The book could have been longer and it did seem like a fast creation by the author. Also the author did not need to provide information regarding the extent of the injuries that were suffered by its music stars. Common sense will tell you that the injuries of any passenger in a light weight aircraft crash can be horrific. With all of that said, I would still give this book a good rating.
Anyone interested in this topic would certainly find this book interesting.
Music's Broken Wings by Heitman also covers this topic. The Ricky Nelson crash is covered in great detail. That book is larger and does a better job of sparing the reader from the upsetting information.
Both are interesting reading material.
Slightly Enlightening.......2005-10-14
I was disappointed in the lack of content in this book. While I was slightly enlightened with what appear to be some interesting facts, I believe there could have been much more information, resulting in a much thicker book. I finished this in two quick sittings (about a 3.5 hour read). This was a rush job, without a lot of commitment to research. The last few artists barely get a mention. Randy Rhodes, the guitarist that resurrected Ozzy Ozborne's career gets 1.5 pages??
Fantastically Gripping.......2004-12-31
This book takes you into the airplane or helicopter of some of music's most beloved stars on the trips that ended in their death. From Buddy Holly to Aaliyah, you are put in the scene by the very talented author Rich Everitt, and then taken up to the very second of their death. During the story of the last days, there is a flashback through the life of the star ending on the day they die. Another fascinating aspect of this book is how every chapter ends with "Ironies and Oddities". A very interesting list of factoids about the star and any ironic circumstances involving their crash. I loved this book! It truly has something for everyone, the music buff, the amateur or professional pilot, and anyone who just loves to be on the edge of their seat.
Spell binding.......2004-11-03
A friend recommended the book and I was skeptical at first, knowing nothing about flying airplanes. HOWEVER, the stories of the musicians were terrific and the reports of what actually happened in the crash were riveting. My husband and I shared the book back and forth for three days before we finally read it cover to cover between us.
Everitt Rock and Roll Heaven Review.......2004-10-13
I loved getting the real story from a news anchor. The fact that the author was reporting the inaccuracy of first reports made the material especially interesting. I would highly recommend the book to any rock/country fan, especially those who find facts about their favorite performers of interest. I am purchasing for Christmas presents.

Fun Story.......2007-06-05
I typically do not read mystery books, but was introduced to this story and was intrigued as it relates to the Minnesota Zoo and is set in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Getting a sense of what zoo life is like beyond what we see in the exhibits was very interesting. I have never thought about what happens behind the scenes and have a new appreciation for zookeepers and all the work involved in creating the displays we see.
The characters are interesting and I found that I could easily picture each. I became interested in the fate of everyone throughout the book and would love to read about where everyone is 5 years later. The plot twists were great, just as soon as I was convinced I was on the right track a new piece of information was interwoven in the story and I had to rethink my position. While away from the book, I still found myself thinking about the character interaction and trying to conclude who the guilty party was. I also enjoyed the elements of "normal" zookeeper activities spread throughout the story. It was hard to set the book down.
I recommend this book to people interested in wild animals and zoos, people who are familiar with the Twin Cities and enjoy "knowing" where the action is taking place and anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
fine amateur sleuth tale .......2007-06-03
The Minnesota Valley Zoo hosts the Beastly Ball to raise public awareness and funding. However, as the staff escorts the visiting dignitaries to the newest exhibit, the Australian Walkabout Trail featuring Crocodile Island, the corpse of the disliked director Anthony Wright is found.
Police Detective Ole Sorenson arrests lead crocodile handler Johnny Ray "JR" Erling as the evidence strongly points to him especially since he vanished soon after Wright's mutilated body was found in the habitat of Sebastian and Babe. Zookeeper Lavender "Snake" Jones and her spouse herpetologist Jeff believe otherwise; they investigate, but every clue the amateur sleuths uncover affirms the police belief that JR killed Wright.
Timing aside with the recent tragic death of the Crocodile Hunter as Jeff seems so much like Steve Irwin; this is a fine amateur sleuth tale in which Snake's investigation enables the audience to see what goes on behind the exhibits of a zoo. The deep look at a zoo is cleverly interwoven into the whodunit, but is so well done, the Minnesota Valley Zoo feels like a key character. Fans will enjoy this fine murder mystery in which every clue points toward JR being a killer hiding his illegal peddling of wild animals with only Snake and Jeff having doubts that are slowly vanishing with one clue after another.

Book Description
Garrison Keillor once said that "cats show us that not everything in nature has a purpose." The Way of the Cat, however, shows us how cats may be in our lives to help us follow our bliss. Iggy, Isabel, and Inky are three cats that have shown author Dana Kramer-Rolls how to get in touch with her inner cat - and discover the secrets of a blissful life.
Kramer-Rolls's philosophy is simple: By "being as simple and direct as our cats we can achieve a `higher' or at least more natural and less-stressed state. Get involved with your cats. Their wisdom is now open to you, and you can learn everything they have to teach." The funny and surprising Way of the Cat guides readers through the days and lives of Kramer-Rolls's cats and teaches them the ways of feline wisdom. The Way of the Cat is packed with fun tips, exercises, cat stories and food for thought - all drawn from the blissful lives cats lead every day.

Life Lessons From Your Cat.......2007-02-22
The Way Of The Cat is not just a feline lovers book. It is a psychology/self-help book written from a very original angle. Learn a quieter, more relaxed style of living by observing your cat.
For example learn the cat methods of meditation and yoga. If you are not usually interested in those arts this book still might be for you. Cat meditation does not require the strict rules of straight back, crossed legs, hands in the lotus position, staring at a candle for 20 minutes, all with a totally empty brain. Sit any way you feel comfortable. Move your head if you are bored with what you see. Think about what you might eat for tea. The methods you learn in this book will be totally natural and come easy.
Other topics covered include getting the most out of sleeping, eating right, friendly relationships/personal space, growing old with dignity and religion. Each chapter ends with a set of practical exercises that will really change your life if you let them.
I read this book some time ago but I still spend half an hour a day with my cat in the garden looking at clouds, ants, and plants, following my moggy, meditating about what I have read and sometimes thinking nothing at all.
Not just for cat people!.......2004-09-25
This smart, spiritual and life affirming little book is not just for cat lovers. With wisdom and humor Dana Kramer-Rolls encourages her readers to make their lives more beautiful and fulfilling by looking to our furry friends. She gently shows us we can learn to be comfortable in our bodies, age beautifully and live passionate and spiritually.
This is very sweet book for all kinds of people.

Book Description
When reports of the gruesome murder of former 80s rocker Stevey Richards hit the airwaves, it's the biggest story around and it puts his name back in the spotlight for the first time in years. The problem is Stevey isn't dead, he just wishes he were. His old record label hatches a scheme to cash in on the scandal by pretending he's dead and releasing his long-lost album. After a decade of playing dives and seedy clubs, Stevey is all for it until he writes his masterpiece song and decides he's not ready to give up his life just yet.
Walking away from the record company isn't as easy as it sounds. Richards discovers the label is more powerful and ruthless than any mafia in the country and they aren't about to let him go public.
From there, it's a mad dash through the underbelly of the music world as Stevey faces record-company thugs and hitmen in an effort to stay alive. The torture and murder of a boy-band star, the brutal beating of a pop diva and the assassination of a folk music failure are all intertwined in this fast paced, dark comedy-thriller.

Product Description
When East German police pulled American Dean Reed's body out of a lake behind the Iron Curtain in 1986, fans and government officials around the world speculated wildly about who caused his death. The handsome singing and acting superstar starred in movies with some of the biggest names of the 1960s and '70s, and women on three continents were happy to share his bed. But Reed was driven to fight injustice, braving gunfire and torture to vocally oppose oppressive governments throughout South America, touching off an international incident with his arrest in the United States and angering his own government with protests against its foreign policies. His knack for showing up wherever history was being written brought money and acclaim, but failed to translate into Hollywood fame.
This is the uniquely American tale of Reed's meteoric rise from a Colorado cowboy to a beloved international star, and of the hand that finally silenced him. For those who remember seeing Reed profiled on 60 Minutes and in the pages of People magazine, or for anyone intrigued by the early years of rock 'n' roll or the liberal activism of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the dramatic investigation of a rebel's life.
Customer Reviews:
The Biography of a Man Both Famous and Obscure, At Once.......2006-08-29
Dean Reed is someone more Americans should know. He (1938-1986) was an American rock and roll star. . .everywhere east of the Iron Curtain. He was also a film star, well-known throughout Eastern Europe, Communist Asia, Central and South America. And he was a practicing Socialist, as well.
Author Chuck Laszewski does a fine job of providing a thorough overview of the how's and why's of Reed's life---including why this very American boy turned Red at the height of the Cold War, and why regardless of this fact, Reed still called himself "a good American".
The book is well-paced, insightful and entertaining. Laszewski doles out facts like a good mystery novelist, keeping the reader in suspense until the end. Dean Reed died under mysterious circumstances in East Berlin in 1986. The circumstances of his demise have been the cause of much speculation ever since then. Laszewski addresses all of the conspiracy theories objectively and with fine detail. At the end, he provides a theory of his own, based on as much information as is available, bringing his book to a satisfying conclusion.
If you enjoy a good page-turning mystery, biography, history or rock and roll, you'll find Rock n' Roll Radical to be an enjoyable read. I know I did.
What a Life.......2005-11-27
Rock 'n' Roll Radical is a fascinating look at the life and death of an international star. The author has skillfully blended the star side of Dean Reed - hungry for fame and applause - with the activist - hungry for justice and human rights. Played on the global stage against the backdrop of the Cold War, we witness the life of a Colorado cowboy filled with women, protests, Communism, arrests, movies, espionage, torture, and rock 'n' roll, all culminating in a body found floating in a lake behind the Iron Curtain.
Contemporary History and Mystery.......2005-11-23
Rock and Roll Radical provides a fast-paced and well researched biography of a relatively unknown American "radical"-Dean Reed. Reed, while virtually unknown in the U.S., was a very popular movie star and "rock `n' roll" singer in South America and the former communist bloc countries of Eastern Europe. Reed participated in and witnessed many of the significant political and social events emanating from the late 1950's to the 1970's. Learning of Reed and how events shaped his actions and opinions provides the reader with a broader view of contemporary history. Surrounding this entire story is an excellent narrative that compels the reader to turn to the back of the book to learn more about the mysterious circumstances of Reed's death in East Berlin.

Book Description
"A few centuries ago," said Bill Roll, "natural science museums threw out their collections of meteorites, because astronomers were convinced there were no stones in the sky. And it wasn't too long ago that physicists asserted that the atom was the smallest bit of matter. Now there is a whole science called quantum physics based on the study of subatomic particles. It's incredible the number of 'miracles' we accept today without question that yesterday's teachers of science told us were impossible."
When I considered that statement, I realized he was right. There was a time when the idea of the telephone seemed impossible, yet today few people are without one. The same holds true of a radio. And as a child I would have found the concept of television too ridiculous even to contemplate, yet now I take it for granted that, at the punch of a button, a blank screen will come alive with all sorts of activity.
If we can accept our ability to communicate with friends from a distance through the use of telephones and radios, and the fact that a picture can be broken into bits and transported invisibly through space to reassemble itself in our living room, why should we find it hard to accept the possibility that a thought might be transmitted from one mind to another as in telepathy?
--Lois Duncan, from Psychic Connections: A Journey into the Mysterious World Of Psi
Past our ability to obtain information by using the five basic senses--sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste--lies...what?
Psychic Connections: A Journey into the Mysterious World of Psi is a nonfiction work about parapsychology which introduces readers to the fascinating world of ESP, or extrasensory perception. Based on laboratory research and documented case histories, it addresses such subjects as astral projection (out-of-body experiences); NDEs (near-death experiences); apparitions and hauntings; poltergeists; psychokinesis; channeling and mediumship; clairvoyance; levitation; precognition; telepathy; psychic healing; and practical applications of ESP, such as the use of psychic detectives by law enforcement agencies.
Containing photographs, a glossary, an index, and a list of sources, Psychic Connections is the basic book on parapsychology. Compelling and thought-provoking, it belongs on every thinking person's bookshelf.
Customer Reviews:
A basic introduction to the world of psi.......2002-03-02
I picked up this book while browsing through my county library one day and I must admit it made for a fascinating read. Young adult suspense-novelist Lois Duncan has collaborated with parapsychologist William Roll to create the definitive overview of psychic phenomena for those whose interest in the subject is just budding (primarily teenagers). Duncan describes the various aspects of psi such as out-of-body-experiences, near-death experiences, apparitions, telepathy etc. while substantiating those descriptions with evidence from Roll's laboratory research and case histories. That being said, however, the book is not without some faults and as such it won't appeal to everyone. Skeptics may blanch at the lack of alternative, rational explanations for psychic phenomena and those who are already interested in psi may find it too generic (the vast majority of the writing is done by Mrs. Duncan, Roll contributes only a short foreword and conclusion). However, this is easily forgivable as the book is not targeted at people who have already established their beliefs on psi but is intended, rather, to act as a sort of catalyst for further interest. I think Duncan and Roll have succeeded admirably on this score and I highly recommend the book to people who would like to learn more about the fascinating nature of psychic experiences.
Connecting to Psychic Connections.......2000-03-26
This was a very good book, however, as a hardcore Lois Duncan fan, I missed the mysterious twists and turns of the plot that usually accompany her books. In spite of that, "Psychic Connections" is a book certainly worth reading, and I recomend it to anyone who enjoys reading about the supernatural.
Fascinating examination of true psychic occurrences........1998-11-10
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in true psychic phenomenon. There are things that happen that William Roll is trying to scientifically study, measure and authenticate here. Totally fascinating.
The best intro to parapsychology I have read!.......1997-09-04
Dr. Roll, world renound for his expertise on the poltegeist phenomenon, has writen a great book explaining the terms and common perceptions of modern parapsychology. He presents the matierial in a light and anecdotal fashion that hits close to home. A must read for those curious about parapsychology

Book Description
The comic strips of Colin B. Morton and Chuck Death deliver an irreverent, heartfelt, and devastatingly funny history of rock and roll. Like Monty Python at its best, their version is surreal and ridiculous - yet somehow everything in it rings true.
According to Morton and Death, the bass player in Led Zeppelin was Jean-Paul Sartre. And despite having been able to think up brilliant titles for their first three albums, Led Zeppelin were stuck for what to call the fourth one - so they put a load of prunes on the front.
In strip after strip, Morton & Death pinpoint the absurdities and oddities of rock history. In the process, they often come closer to its truth than conventional accounts do, as well as being far more entertaining. As for the drawings, their caricatures of rock stars from Mick Jagger to Frank Zappa, Johnny Rotten to Courtney Love, are in themselves worth the price of admission.
Customer Reviews:
This book is loaded with hipness molecules®.......2005-10-24
Even if you don't get all or even most of the references (and they explain many of them, such as Morrissey's chin), if you have any interest in (and yet at least a bit of detachment from, ironic or not) popular music such as Elvis, David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Dylan, The Stones, Lou Reed, The Fall, Springsteen, Oasis, U2, Madonna, etc, you will find many a knowing laugh here.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but one band not mentioned, surprisingly enough, is The Beatles. No, wait! They do cover their early days on the German Reeferbahn (sic), and possibly more.
this is my god of books.......2003-01-27
It's bloody brilliant. That's all that needs to be said. This book may well have changed my life. Also, Colin B. Morton is a very nice man.
Finally, the history of rock the way it should be told........1999-04-01
Chuck Death, aka Jon Langford of the Mekons, has been poking his finger into the eyeball of rock 'n' roll for the better part of the past 20 years. Now, with the aid of equally cynical Colin Morton, we find out what really matters to Langford. And what we learn is that what matters is unpretentious, true-believer rock. Death and Morton have no time for hair bands.
This collection of cartoons is consistently visually interesting, with the writing equally challenging. Highly recommended for anyone who realizes that just maybe Pink Floyd isn't as relevent we all once believed. The punk years are presented as well as any history to date - the complete antithesis to Greil Marcus' magnum opus "Lipstick Traces" (ironically, Marcus pens the forward).
"Great Pop Things" is a great book.
Funny Cartoons.......1999-02-19
This book features humourous comic strips about rock and roll music. Fans of pop culture should dig it. Some of the jokes may be too British for Americans, though.
Fact vs. Fiction: Just like Popular Music itself!.......1999-01-30
What at first appears to be a collection of simple (?) comic strips turns out to be denser than a dictionary, and just as thickly packed with facts. Or are they facts? Nope, actually they're Facts: a stew of historical reality, wishful thinking, mythology and just plain lies. And what's more, an historical account built of this sort of creative factualizing turns out to be WAY more interesting than the drab documentary many of us lived through and barely survived ... and what's in this book may come a lot closer to portraying the frayed remnants of our chemically-altered and misremembered memories than the most objective journalism possibly could.
So what that a great part of its contents is a huge pack of lies, objectively considered? Even so, this book in its meanderings takes us into a much broader mytho-poetic stream of consciousness; which is pretty funny considering that the object of its affection is nothing more (nor less) than Pop Music itself.
Its subject matter could not be better served or more truly portrayed even if it were historically accurate ... Or is that "hysterically"? -- because it's terribly funny, too, in its perverse nuttiness and irreverence.
Surprisingly, reading this book requires a bit more concentration than you would need for, say, Garfield. And I like Garfield. (But then, I like
, too.)
