This book is not sky high.......2007-05-20

I was surprised when I finished reading this book and I asked myself "is this the end of the series?". This book completely lacked the story and the humor and wit associated with other Asterix series. A. Udeerzo tried something new with mix of flying saucers and UFO's, robots, super clones which can fly, galactic council similiar to ones in Star Wars and all important the magic potion of the Gauls but to the dismay did not make a good story. It looked like everytihing 'just fell out of the book'.

Albert Uderzo, Asterix and the Falling Sky (Dargaud, 2005)

I'm not terribly sure what Uderzo was smoking when he came up with this one, but as a tribute to Walt Disney, he has the indomitable Gaulish village invaded by... space aliens? Yes, you heard that right. You can expect some of the punning, but nothing else that's made the series so much fun over the years is to be found here. The worst book in the series to date. **

Rene Goscinny was the storyteller for the original Asterix series, while Albert Uderzo was the illustrator. Since Goscinny's demise, Uderzo has taken on both the tasks himself. Unfortunately, Uderzo's storytelling leaves much to be desired. The result is that in the latest installments of Asterix' adventures, including "Asterix and the Falling Sky", the illustrations are as good as they used to be, but the actual story has suffered heavily. The plots are nowhere close to what Goscinny could conjure up; most missed is the subtle, sly humor that made Asterix so enjoyable to me and my friends growing up.

Nevertheless, this is still Asterix, and I almost enjoyed reading the Falling Sky. It is actually better, in my opinion, than "Asterix and the Secret Weapon" - another all-Uderzo affair. Normally I would have given it 3 or 4 stars.

However, I was dismayed by what I figured out to be thinly-veiled disparagement of certain ethnicities in the Falling Sky adventure. The bad alien in here has the complexion and facial features very similar to people from some Oriental ethnicities, and there is dialogue about how they are jealous of the good aliens (represented by popular Disney characters, with a name that is an anagram of "Walt Disney" .. you figure out which society is being referred to here), and how the bad aliens try to steal the ideas and technologies of the good aliens.
Normally I don't read too much into such things, but taken together, this is impossible to ignore or wave off as mere coincidence (I am still hoping that I am wrong here). Racial/ethnic stereotyping is never acceptable, but when it creeps into an adventure of a much-beloved comic hero, especially when the adventure is written in the 21st century, it is simply reprehensible. I am deeply disappointed, and forced to give it a single star.

Asterix of the future?.......2006-12-14

Spaceships, super clones, a nice tellytubby looking space alien and a bad grasshopper looking space alien, and above all a mediocre story line. What is next? Asterix and Obelix travel in time to New York, or Roman Soldiers in Space? This was not a typical Asterix. Old Asterix lovers like me and the previous reviewers will not enjoy this one. People new to Asterix and Obelix should not buy it either, since this is not what Asterix is about.

On the other hand, I asked my nine year old what he thought of it. He liked the fact that Uderzo introduced some space ships and aliens into the story. He thought it was "different, and creative". He liked it as much as he liked all the other ones. He has already read it several times.

Thinking about it, he actually has a point. Children see it differently, many of them like this stuff. Monsters, science fiction, fighting clones, if you were nine years old maybe you would like it too. So to give the new generation a voice I gave it three stars. In the end I don't regret buying it.

This Asterix album will appeal mostly to children........2006-11-18

This certainly is an odd entry in the Asterix saga. Perhaps Uderzo is running out of ideas, since he needed to introduce aliens. The story is only mildly interesting although it has its moments, but at no point does it reach the same level as the old adventures. The art is great as always though.

I wish I could give it 2,5 stars, but since that's not possible I give it two stars. While most of the Asterix adventures deserve 5 stars and are always great fun for both kids and adults, this one probably appeals more to kids. They're usually great adventures full of humour. This one is neither. I still don't think it's as awful as most reviewers seems to think. It's good enough to kill some time with, but that's all. Asterix fans might want to check it out but don't have too high expectations. If Albert Udernzo would happen to read this, please, put some heart into the story next time, and if you can't come up with a better story than this, please hire a writer.

Oh Sidney, what have you done??.......2007-05-07

If you picked up "The Sky is Falling" because it was written by the famous Sidney Sheldon, you will be grossly disappointed in what you find between its covers. Like other reviews here it is: flat, tepid, and extremely predictable. It would not be so horrible if it were written by a first-time author but this is S. Sheldon, for Pete's sake, not a newcomer. The sad part about this read is that now I don't want to read another Sheldon book. I do realize that this is not fair to his ability. However, he set this piece of fluff in motion and William Morrow HarperCollins printed it. Where are the good editors when you need them? If an unknown author wrote this book, it would never have found a publisher.

If by "loved" you mean "loathed" and if by "this book" you mean "this piece of garbage." I would say the characterization comes off as flat, but that would be an insult to flat characterization. This book has NO characterization. None. Nada. Zilch. Zero. You don't give one rip about the characters or their lives. Ditto for the tepid plot. Ditto for the awkward, wooden dialogue. Ugh, it makes me hurt just thinking about it. I've read bad books before that nonetheless drew me in, affording the opportunity to at least suspend my disbelief even if the story still stunk in the end. The Sky Is Falling is not one of those novels. Buy this if you're a writer and need a primer on how NOT to craft your fiction. Otherwise, steer clear.

She is hot on the trail.......2006-01-24

We first meet Dana Evans, the feisty TV Anchorwoman in Sidney Sheldon's "The Best Laid Plan". In that book, Dana is on the trail of the President of the United States who might be guilty of murder. In "The Sky is Falling", Dana is racing the globe to find out who wiped out the entire Winthrop family. The digger she deeps, the more she is determined to prove that the fairy tale Winthrops were the target of a conspiracy.

As with any Sidney Sheldon book, you get a lovely young women who is ready to take on the world. Most of his story lines are so unbelievable that you want to say "yeah right,,," but that is the reason I buy his books. They are fast reads and no matter how many people are out to get the heroine, she is always one step ahead. Reading his books are akin to seeing an action suspense movie where almost 99% of the time you know the good guys will win.

It is a suspense thriller. Very nicely written. It is very engrossing, once i started reading felt like finishing the book at once. Very very nice thriller.

I rented the CD book from the library. I do not write long reviews but instead like to point out the major flaws or good points.

The storyline is OK. However the sheer banality of the diaglogue is almost staggering. The average emotional and mental IQ of the characters is extremely low. These people are not interesting!!!!!!!!

Alan Roxburgh is a pastor, teacher, writer, mentor and intellectual. Roxburgh travels widely through much of the West and brings a genuine global perspective. This is very helpful territory to any leader who is struggling in a church or denominational structure or who has left theses structures for new horizons. It helps explain some of what and why this occurs and the possibilities for missional imagination because of and in spite of these systems. It isn't a long book but what Roxburgh covers in 150 pages could have saved me about 50 other Missional and Emergent books worth of time and money!

Not bad, I figured it out before the end, not a new or surprising plot. However, the aboriginal American detectives are nicely drawn and interesting and I wouldn't mind reading more mysteries with them as the protagonists.

I enjoy this series quite a bit because of the Indian lore--not overdone, but insights into the culture, bits about what is happening with reservations/culture. This particular mystery was outstanding in plot and the method of killing off characters. The suspence factor was also quite good. I'd like to see more character development between the two main characters. There's a bit of a sense of holding off on growing their relationship--and that relationship, along with the emotional growth of the two individually play a big part in why I like these books. Without it, they will become just another mystery so I really hope that future books bring and keep these personality aspects to the forefront.

Sky Woman Falling ranks with Tony Hillerman's best books in its stunningly accurate portrayal of contemporary Iroquois society. He takes a very complex situation, the gambling crisis which has ripped apart the Iroquois, and written a novel which describes not only the internal tensions but the tragic results stemming from this latest assault upon the Six Nations. His command of Haudenosaunee cosmology, spirituality and symbolism is truly unique for a non-Native novelist. There is nothing patronizing is this book. The principals in Sky Woman Falling are Native investigators as are the culprits. He correctly portrays the Native gambling advocates as complex humans seduced, and then corrupted, by casino gambling. Mitchell obviously used a lot of shoe leather travelling around central New York; his descriptions of the land and people are without parallel. The story takes place among the Oneidas but could have just as easily described events among the Seneca, Onondaga or Mohawk. As a Mohawk writer I applaud this book and strongly urge anyone who has an interest in the Iroquois to read it and pass it along to your friends. It would make a great film.

A baffling murder in an atmosphere of animosity.......2004-01-12

FBI special agent Anna Turnipseed, a California Modoc, again teams up with Bureau of Indian Affairs Investigator Emmett Parker, an Oklahoma Comanche, in a murder case in upstate New York, where friction between Oneida Indians and local whites are high after a court case awarded most of suburban upstate to the Indians.

The victim, Brenda Two Kettles, an outspoken Oneida, fell to her death from the sky - presumably from the airplane she was taking to unstated business in New York City. But time and route implausabilities are only the beginning in this baffling case. As the pair - still caught up in their unfulfilled attraction - explore family and community leads, a picture of conflicts emerges. Conflict between Two Kettles and her impoverished and alcoholic family and tribal leaders. And conflict between angry whites and long-aggrieved Indians.

Mitchell ("Ancient Ones"), a former reservation cop, tells the story from several viewpoints, including a childlike giant who janitors at the Indian museum and harbors some fearful secret. The plot encompasses tribal legends and Anna's prescient dreams as well as ugly racism, modern power struggles and smart police work. An explosive, double-barreled climax and an ingenious resolution top things off. Anna remains an intriguing protagonist in this well-grounded, suspense-filled series.

I re-read this book recently following the tragic events in New York on 11th September 2001. Some media reports have been suggesting that the crash of a B25 bomber into the Empire State Building in 1945 has close parallels with the WTC terrorist attacks, but the circumstanes and facts were very different
The B25, being flown by an ex B17 pilot who took extraordinary risks flying visually in thick fog, became lost and hit upper floors of the ESB at an acute angle and at a speed probably close to stalling, under 100mph. The plane weighed about 20 tons and the fuel tanks were under half full. Obviously the kinetic and explosive energy involved in this accident was much less than that suffereed by the WTC. Nevertheless there was a serious fire and substantial damage to the ESB, and the three plane crew and a dozen office workers were killed
The book is certainly worth reading but suffers from over-dramatisation of the events in the B25 during the final flight - of which there were obviously no surviving witnesses

Incredible Story.......2000-01-05

I read this (library) book many years ago and have been trying to obtain a copy ever since. I can't agree with Blair (review above/below?), the pilot wasn't tired, he was extraordinarily arrogant and broke just about every aviation rule in the book in a doomed attempt to pick up his commanding officer from another airfield, in absolutely atrocious weather. If I remember right he was a highly decorated war hero named Colonel Smith. His actions cost the lives of many people, not just those in the aircraft but also many in the building - the story of the elevator operator that plummeted 78 floors after having the cables severed by one of the engines hurtling down a corridor is amazing - she went on to become a grandmother! Amazon.com, PLEASE find me a copy of this book!

On a foggy morning in July 1945, the B-25 Mitchell bomber Old John Feathermerchant, which had just returned from Europe, took off from what is now LaGuardia Airport in New York City, headed for Boston, Massachusetts, but instead, it crashed into the 79th Floor of the Empire State Building. A new novel? No, not exactly. The true story of the Old John Feathermerchant--the B-25 that crashed into the 79th Floor of the Empire State Building in July 1945. The pilot was tired, the crew had just returned from Europe and was headed home. All aboard were killed including a Navy Corpsman. It has concise reports and eyewitness testimony. Arthur Weingarten's 1977 book is concise and accurate. It's a good book. I should know. I read it back in the 1980s. Why didn't I read it sooner?

In Hank the Cowdog everyone thank's the sky is going to fall but Hank predict it wont then Hank starts to belive it will fall so he got freakt out until the rooster said it will fall when it is fall whant I like about the book is when the cickiens start going crazy and start throughing eggs at hem.

Look out! When impeachable sources Pete the Barncat and J.T. Cluck declare the sky ready to fall, it is up to The Head of Ranch Security to save the day. Or, not... Drover's leg did not even act up, but Hank barely escaped a serious bout with the broom. It was truly a day to be remembered...except for the problem with the hiccups. Oh, well... I missed the buzzards and the coyotes, but #45 was still a great Hank of fun. An entertaining series for all ages.l

I enjoyed all of the stories of others suffering from OCD. Most are extreme cases, but overall I could relate to the fear, etc. It was nice to know there are others with the same problem.

Absolutely a must-read for those suffering from OCD or other Obsessions, or for those who want to understand loved-ones dealing with these disorders. Your understanding will greatly expand. Also includes steps towards recovery. Highly recommended.

Misinformation about OCD.......2007-01-07

I found this book troubling, because right from the start it presents inaccurate information about the treatment and cause of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Early on in the book, the author writes the following about the "in vivo" therapy she does with clients with OCD. This therapy exposes the client to a feared object/situation/etc. with the support of the therapist.

"The idea was that I, as the therapist, could demonstrate that there really was no objective danger in any of these things or situations, and help the fearful person to confront each of the items on the list and see that nothing terrible happend. When we had worked all the way through the list, the person would see the folly of these fears and no longer be fearful." And then she goes on to say how most of the time this works to cure the fear.

Exposure to feared objects/situations is an accepted and highly regarded part of treatment for OCD. However, the purpose is not to show the client that their fear is irrational or unecessary and knowing this does not cure OCD. In fact, in most cases people with OCD recognize that their fears are excessive and unecessary - but despite this knowledge they remain powerful, disturbing, and sometimes disabling. Therapy through exposure is intended to give the client opportunities to learn to live with the extreme anxieties of these situations and to learn healthy ways to cope with them. You CANNOT convince someone with OCD that their obsessive anxieties are in error and thereby cure them. That is not the nature of the disorder or the intent of the widely-used exposure therapy many Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists employ.

The second major red flag you will run into right away in this book is how the author keeps giving examples of OCD "caused" by faulty parenting. (Her first example is that her mother's excessive washing of her as a child caused her to have OCD and the second is about a mother who inadvertantly taught her daughter that thinking about someone dying could make it happen.) Though the exact causes of OCD are still uknown, it is NOT an accepted theory in the modern-day that faulty parenting can cause OCD.

Though I am sure there are interesting aspects to this book, I would recommend you look elsewhere for more accurate information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

I can't give full 5 stars, as i'm rating the whole book.
The best part of the book comes towards the end, page 229 onwards. The preceeding chapters are typical items one can find in all OCD books.
If I were to rate only those towards the end, dealing with how to get better,
I'll simply rate this book 6 out of 5 stars.

Raeann Dumont is able to convey...........2002-03-26

the elements of her therapeutic practice with those suffering from anxiety disorders in a way that helps the sufferers and their families understand what they are going through.

Dr. Dumont coins the term "magic thinking" to convey how sufferers grow convinced that a disaster in the making is real, is happening to them, without the benefit of rational thought. Phobias and obsessive compulsive disorders are brought to the forefront through case studies, and in each, Dr. Dumont not only describes the behaviors, she describes the accompanying thoughts.
It is an interesting book to explore, because she has been able to put into words how some people can depart from reality, despite their intellectual capacity. She helps make their fears real, not only for them, but for their support systems.

There is an excellent part of the book that is devoted to a tolerance and treatment program; and also a description of the role of medication and other resources for those afflicted by anxiety in this fundamentally life-shattering way. It is an excellent introduction for those who need the treatment to understand why a therapist trained to help them will be able to help them break through the barriers, but it is also a realistic awakening that this is a life-changing regimen that they will need to practice to insure that they gain control of their lives forever, and are not controlled instead, by the phobia or the OCD.

One of the very best books ever written to gain insight on panic disorders, Dr. Dumont expands our sensitivity and awareness to the need for cognitive behavior therapy.

Simply a must read for OCD-sufferers and their friends!

This book sucks big time! A cheap story plot, combined with events that just don't seem good enough to be put in a novel - puh lease! The only good thing about this book is all the morals it teaches. Even then, the book isn't all that hot.

I had to read this book for reading class. At first I thought, I really hate history and I don't want to read this. Then I started to read it and then I thought ok, I don't like it that much. Personally, I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would, and I wouldn't read the sequals because I didn't like the first book. I wouldn't give this book a 0, and probably not 1, but a 3 would be WAY to good for this book, so I'm giving it 2 stars. I do not reccomend this book if you don't absoulutly love history!

Best novel ever!!:).......2003-10-16

The Sky is Falling is one of my favourite novels!
It is about a ten-year old girl named Norah. She is living in England in World War II. Her parents out of concern for Norah's and Gavins (Norah's younger brother)well-being, send them on a ship to Canada to live with a canadian family until it is safe to come home. Norah protests, and is angry since she loves the excitment of the War, her friends and family. Both Gavin and Norah end up going to canada, and staying with "aunt Florence" and "aunt Mary" who took them in. "aunt Florence" loves Gavin and he is the center of everything, norah is not popular and things go down hill quickly. It is an incerdible story, that is worth every second of your time! You won't regret reading it!!!!:):)
