Great comparative study of British system costs.......2007-05-13
Not what I anticipated. Author focuses on pricing comparisons for UK rather than the USA.
The Complete Medical Tourist: Your Guide to Inexpensive and Safe Cosmetic and Medical Surgery Overseas.......2007-04-07
The book is very generic and provides little to no insight into medical tourisim. The information provided is basic off the internet type data. I would not recommend this book.
not good book.. only basic info..........2007-03-01
Don' waste your money it has only basic info.. you can get most of it from the Net. no in depth research about any major surgry cost, fee, or were is the best hospital to do it.
A MUST read for anyone facing expensive medical treatment!!!.......2006-05-16
If you, or anyone in your family is stuck waiting for expensive surgery then I can highly recommend this book to you. It covers absolutely everything you need to know about getting medical treatment abroad fast and without breaking the bank. It is also one of those rare medical books that you can actually read cover to cover - this isn't just a reference book.
All the prices are in dollars as well as sterling and euros and it is perfectly accessible for Americans thinking of going abroad for either cosmetic, dental or medical treatment. If you can get better treatment, throw in a holiday and a tan and STILL come back with change then you can't go wrong!
The book doesn't just cover standard hospital treatment alternatives but also plastic surgery etc. So if you want a new nose and a new hip then then here it is! Fantastic!

Book Description
Healthcare organizations have an epidemic on their hands: Medical error is causing more than 98,000 deaths a year in the nation's hospitals. And these failures are not due to unqualified clinicians or the lack of technology, instead, evidence indicates that at least 80 percent of medical error is system derived, meaning that system flaws are setting good people up to fail.
This book provides healthcare leaders with a comprehensive blueprint for building and supporting a culture of patient safety. It includes contributions from experts who have created comprehensive and successful patient safety programs in their organizations.
The strategies and tools in this book will help you:
Assess the safety climate of your organization with a tool used at more than 500 healthcare organizations
Optimize teamwork and communication among staff members
Build practical and effective safeguards into your clinical care systems
Develop policies that hold staff accountable for their own performance but not for system failures
Encourage patient involvement in their own care and communicate openly with patients and families when an error occurs
Create an adverse-event reporting system that generates ideas for improvement
Develop an executive WalkRounds program that encourages staff to engage in open conversations with senior leaders about safety
Employ tools that will assist you in identifying potential trouble spots
This book is copublished with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
The Foreword is written by Lucian Leape, M.D., and Don Berwick, M.D.

Book Description
Persuading People to Have Safer Sex offers a lucid, in-depth, student-friendly and academically thorough discussion of AIDS prevention and health persuasion. In so doing it provides an introduction to the ways that social scientific research can be brought to bear on a daunting health problem.
Covering many aspects of the AIDS crisis, the book introduces readers to the severity of the AIDS problem and explains the epidemiology of the disease. It discusses why persuasion is so important, explicates cognitive theories of AIDS prevention, and notes the role emotions and communication play in safer sex prevention. It also discusses:
*functions that unsafe sex plays in peoples' lives;
*why people, notably minority women, frequently choose to engage in unsafe sex; and
*social factors underlying the spread of AIDS in urban America and portions of Africa.
As a resource for introducing students to the role that theory and research play in health communication and psychology, the volume is appropriate for use in communication, journalism, social psychology, and public health courses, and will be of value to scholars, researchers, and all who seek to understand the use of persuasion in changing behavior.

Customer Reviews:
Not that great........2007-04-08
I regret buying this book; I'm sure there's a better pregnancy exercise book out there. It didn't meet my expectations. Some of the recommendations on exercises broken down by trimester were useful; I wish there was more of that. After those sections, the chapters are broken down by activity which wasn't as helpful. Also, I was shocked that they put exercises to do with your baby; as in holding your baby and rolling him up and down like a barbell! How dangerous is that, at least a first-time parent like me would think so.
Not what I was looking for!.......2006-10-09
I agree with the comments made by the two reviewers "running chick" and "hivequeen", as I too was disappointed with this book. Further to their comments I would like to add the following as to what I think about this book:
- Too much information on everything else and not enough on the main subject, which is pregnancy fitness. This is not a pregnancy guide.
- Exercises offered are very few and repeated, the photos are black and white (ok I could live with that) but they are not very helpful as the exercises that do have a picture only have one. Note that most exercises do not have any pictures.
- We know the importance of exercise during pregnancy we don't need that repeated over and over in so many ways. What we need, I feel is something more structured (not found in this book) with better guidelines and more exercises. Oh, and a little more fun this one depressed me.
- There is a chapter on how to exercise with your baby. I don't know about everyone else but I personally would not feel comfortable using my newborn baby as an exercise weight.
My husband and I are looking at having a second child and given that I gained 45 pounds during my first pregnancy which took me over two years to loose (Dr. Atkins helped with that where every other diet failed), I would not like to repeat the same mistake. Given that I used to be very fit a few years back and I am starting to exercise so that I can get to a certain fitness level before I get pregnant again, I was hoping that this book would help me retain a good fitness level during pregnancy. Unfortunately, I think this book might only be somewhat beneficial to someone that is looking at extremely low impact exercises which I guess would be someone that has not worked out before or hasn't exercised in a long time. It definitely does not live up to its title.
Still looking for the right one or two, will keep you posted. I'm sure there are better ones out there. Planning on checking out the one mentioned by another reviewer (Maternal Fitness by Julie Tupler).
OK but repetitive.......2006-05-17
This book is great about encouraging you to exercise during pregnancy. However, I think it's geared more for those that do not normally exercise. I was hoping to get more specific exercises out of it. There are a number of stretches and exercises, but if you are already athletic, you probably won't gain anything new from this book. I found it very repetitive. For example nearly the same paragraph for squats is printed in four places: the chapter on the first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and leg exercises. When the book first arrived, I thought it would be great, but the information could have been covered in about 1/4 of the pages.
Ok for overview.......2006-04-23
As a web-savvy pregnant woman who is concerned about preparing the muscles for easier delivery and faster recovery after pregnancy, I found this book to be somewhat disappointing in terms of finding information not readily available on the web. It is ok as an overview and contains some useful exercises, but does not specifically address my concerns as well as Maternal Fitness by Julie Tupler, which really goes into detail on the how and why of specific exercises. I would recommend buying that book over this one if you must have only one book. Otherwise The Everything Pregnancy Book is not bad for those also looking for general pregnancy fitness guidelines.
Great book, Great topic!.......2004-04-07
This is THE best book on pregnancy fitness I have ever seen. If staying fit during your 9 months of pregnancy is important to you, this is the book you MUST have! The author obviously has a great grasp on this topic and has brought it to a level that we understand and won't need a dictionary to interpret. This would also make a super gift to a newly pregnant friend.

Book Description
This guide offers practical tips to ensure that patients emerge from their hospital visits healthier than they were before they checked in and without having to endure excessive pain or indignities. Included are practical tips and warnings such as the fact that July, when the new interns start, is the most dangerous month to have a procedure done at a teaching hospital; EMLA anesthetic cream can be requested to be used on children’s skin, allowing for less painful I.V. starts; and washing off all iodine-based antiseptics thoroughly after surgery can prevent chemical burns. Proven tips for reducing hospital bills are also presented.
Customer Reviews:
Get the best hospital care for yourself or loved one.......2004-02-20
This book is easy to read and loaded with practical advice I only wish I'd known in advance. Simple steps show you how to be your best advocate. Enjoyable reading.
Dr. David Sherer's Hospital Survival Guide.......2003-11-15
No one wants to spend time in the hospital. But if you have to (and most of us do at some point), your stay will be safer and more bearable if you are armed with the wit and wisdom of this good doctor. The book is organized so that you can easily find and read information on subjects of interest without having to read the whole book (although it is well written enough that you will probably find yourself browsing back from or ahead of whatever you started to read, and are likely to find that you've read the whole thing pretty soon anyway). The information is clearly and succinctly presented, and the book's coverage is comprehensive. An excellent book , and, one hopes, not the last Dr. Sherer will write.
A Benevolent Insider.......2003-11-08
Dr. David Sherer's book is an insider's view on hospital hierarchy and procedures, a veritable "guide to the perplexed" for patients.
Dr. Sherer seeks to defuse the fears and forebodings prior to hospitalization - that threatening web of unfamiliar people, frightening equipment, and assault on privacy that is not only necessary but inevitable.
What may seem obvious to a doctor may be enlightening to a frightened patient or family member. Offering technical information, behavioral observance, and anecdote, the information is accessible and is replete with condensed case histories. Dr. Sherer has done a good job of anticipating what questions may arise, and of offering answers. Also helpful, he cites resources for further information, from the web or from publications and organizations.
This reader learned about the importance of carrying basic medical information in one's wallet (I have a rare blood type, for example) and the wisdom of keeping a living will. The concept of "Patient Advocate" was enlightening, as was the revelation that, as a patient, one can speak up if discomfort seems unnecessary - hospital protocol need not be entirely rigid.
Dr. Sherer, in this book, is offering good advice for increasing the safety and comfort level of any hospital stay. Significantly, he doesn't attempt to impress the reader with long-winded verbiage, but relays essentials in plain language.
A must read for hospitalv patients.......2003-10-29
Anyone who will go to the hospital for any reason will benefit from this book The same is true for family and friends. The parts about options for anesthesia and when your child needs anesthesia are particularly valuable. In easy to understand language, Dr. Sherer examines the pitfalls of today's healthcare maze. Don't end up a tragic story in the newspaper --- buy this book and read it! It just may save your life.
Not for Women Only!.......2003-10-04
Every hospital experience can be very frightening, from a simple blood test to a major surgery. As a fellow health care/anesthesia provider, my fear when having surgery can be as great as anyone who does not have the training and experience of working with it everyday. This is a great source of info for anyone. The jacket cover may seem to appeal just to women, but believe me, men are just as terrified but can be the most timid about asking the right questions before any health care is initiated. Dr. Sherer writes with practical tips that would benefit anyone. The anecdotal stories that he illustrates are real and can happen if you or your caretaker do not have the right questions and information. My hope is that not only will everyone find this book a "must have", but that Dr. Sherer follows with a sequel...I'd be the first one to send in my anecdotes of the many things I have seen in my career. Information can save your life!

Book Description
"Abuse, although often not detected or reported, existed in every facility we surveyed. It is a serious problem."
Old, weak, and often cognitively impaired, nursing home patients can be easy targets for physical, psychological, material, and financial mistreatment at the hands of those entrusted with their care, safety, and well-being. Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes: There is No Safe Place examines the dark side of nursing homes, where not every employee has the commitment of Mother Theresa. This groundbreaking book applies criminological theory to help develop practical methods of controlling abuse and presents the results of the first and only nationwide study on the theft of patients' belongings, a form of abuse too often ignored by the nursing home industry.
Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes surveys employees, administrators, and family members of patients in 47 nursing homes throughout the United States. Their responses provide invaluable insights on a wide range of topics, including the social and psychological factors that cause different types abuse, characteristics of nursing home patients and employees, the bureaucracy of nursing homes, victimization rates, workforce issues of nursing home aides, and federal regulations for nursing homes. The information gained from the surveys forms the basis for detailed recommendations for creating a safer environment and reducing all forms of abuse, including theft-prevention training programs, background checks and improved screening of potential employees, education and advocacy for current staff, and the reform of federal regulations.
Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes examines:
types of physical abuse (restraints, sexual abuse, neglect)
types of financial abuse (trust accounts, bank accounts, improper charges for services and drugs, identity theft)
types of psychological abuse (abandonment, segregation, childlike treatment, verbal abuse)
effects of psychological abuse (depression, learned helplessness, psychiatric disorders)
reasons for abuse by employees (staff turnover, job burnout, job dissatisfaction, caregiver stress)
the who, what, and why of nursing home theft One of the few books to deal with abuse of the elderly outside a domestic setting, Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes: There is No Safe Place interprets and analyzes abuse to provide new ways of thinking about this growing problem and new methods of preventing it from growing any more widespread.
