Book Description
Children ages 4 to 8 have a hard time grasping the concept of “God.” But it can be done through the person of Jesus. Told in a wonderfully inviting style, this Bible storybook shares many beloved Bible stories and reveals how the news and message of Jesus unfolds throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament. Jesus in the Story helps readers love and appreciate Jesus and begin their own journey of faith. Beautiful 4-color artwork throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Presents God's heart of love in every story!.......2007-06-27
This is the most wonderful children's story bible I have come across. It presents the heart of God in simple yet profound ways and is enjoyable for both children and adults. Great for families to read together!!
Buy It Now.......2007-06-06
Buy this book right now. You need it. Your kids need it. The families and children in your church need it. The Bible, OT & NT, is a book about Jesus, a book about God's plan to redeem his people and his creation through his Son. This book will instill into your children this proper understanding of how to understand and read the Bible.
Wonderful item.......2007-06-05
This little bible storybook is great. It came highly recommended by a college professor, and it connects the stories of the bible to the overall redemptive plan of Christ. Don't think it's a bible, but if you are looking for a storybook of the bible, this one is excellent.
Full of Wonder.......2007-05-15
What an amazing book! Lloyd-Jones has marvelously selected Biblical Texts that communicate Christ and capture the attention and the hearts of readers of all ages. Jago's illustrations are visual complements to the stories. The two-the art and words work together to pull the reader in so that reading to my child is neither a chore nor a bore, but rather an exciting time of expanding our understanding of a glorious God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Gold Standard for Children's Bibles.......2007-05-09
Sally Lloyd Jones' version of the the Bible is the one I wish I'd had when my own children were growing up. It has it all, including action, drama, pathos, humor, poetic language AND an awareness of how the Old Testament prefigures the New, leading us to Jesus and his message of hope and redemption. I love it, read it myself for comfort and encouragement, and am truly grateful that I found it in time to read to my grandchildren.

Book Description
Do you find it hard to believe that the One who made everything keeps your name on His heart and on His lips? Did you realize that your name is written on the hand of God (Is. 49:16)? Perhaps you've never seen your name honored. And you can't remember when you heard it spoken with kindness. In this book, Lucado offers the inspiration to believe that God has already bought the ticket-with your name on it.

When God Whispers Your NameRate this at least "10". Read this and be all amazed when you learn how "God Whispers" your name and how you feel when it happens. God does know you and you have a better understanding after reading this book. Great gift. Max should be considered the "Nora Roberts" of the religious genre.
Listen Carefully, God Loves You.......2007-04-26
Thank you Max! Especially in the difficult times, we forget how much God loves us. Yes, and our names are engraved on the palms of his hands. Thank you, again, for the reminder.

Book Description
Annie Wilder suspected the funky 100-year-old house was haunted when she saw it for the first time. But nothing could have prepared her for the mischievous and downright scary antics that take place once she, her two children, and her cats move into the rundown Victorian home. Disembodied conversation, pounding walls, glowing orbs, and mysterious whispers soon escalate into full-fledged ghostly visits-provoking sheer terror that, over time, transforms into curiosity. Determined to make peace with her spirit guests, she invites renowned clairvoyant Echo Bodine over and learns fascinating details about each of the entities residing there.
Wilder's gripping tale provides a compelling glimpse into the otherworldly nature of the lonely spirits, protective forces, phantom pets, and departed loved ones that occupy her remarkable home.
Annie Wilder (Minnesota) is a mother and writer. She continues to bravely live in her spooky old house with three cats and numerous ghosts. This is her first book.
Customer Reviews:
Great reading!.......2007-06-22
I had heard about this book so I decided to give it a try. I was NOT disappointed. Annie Wilder is a talented and BRAVE lady. I would love to meet her one day just to hear more about her encounters. Read this book and you won't be able to put it down.
Love it!.......2007-05-15
This book was fascinating from the beginning. I read it in two sittings. I've had experiences with ghosts since I was a child. In fact, the house my parents lived in when I was born was haunted by the couple who lived there before them. This mystery of a book not only intrigued me, but brought back memories as well. A fine book worth anyone's shelf.
readers will be hooked.......2007-05-05
Some houses call to us and we just know it will become our home; some houses have spirits that do the calling. Can a haunted house be home? Of course it can, and probably more so than some others if you can get along with the previous residents. After all, the spirits don't want to leave their home so it must be the perfect place! Annie Wilder finds out just how haunted her new home is, and shares her experiences with readers in her book "House of Spirits and Whispers."
Leon was the previous owner of the house and he wasn't ready to move out when he passed on. It seems Leon was quite picky about who was to move in because out of all the people who were shown the house, Annie was the chosen one. She respected Leon's presence right from the beginning and in the end was grateful for his being there. A good number of spirits frequented Annie's house. Some were former residents of the 100-year-old home, and others were just passersby, perhaps visiting from the funeral home across the way. Annie gives testament to the numerous goings on that she and her children, and her friends and family experienced.
From knocks on the wall in the middle of the night, to whispers coming through the radiators (even in the summer), from a timely touch on the shoulder to appearances at parties, spiritual happenings were frequent. Through the years Annie developed her own abilities and even astral traveled in the house only to meet up with two sister spirits who apparently disapproved of her practice. If you realize that you live among spirits you become more attuned to them, and Annie certainly did.
The story is quite interesting. Who doesn't wish to discover the secrets of their home? The author openly shares what she finds and right from the beginning readers will be hooked. A fascinating tale, well told.
One of the best of it's kind........2007-04-10
I have read and collect several books on the paranormal and haunting. I must say that to date this is my favorite. It isn't told by a so called professional, nor is it blabbering on about someone elses experience. It was very believable and I felt the author was also very real and relatable. The occurances that happened in this home were from my own personal knowledge very much a typical haunting without all of the extra dramatization in so many books of this kind. I absolutely loved the description of the house as well. I only wish there could have been some pictures of that beautiful old house included.
Not believable.......2007-04-06
I've read many books of this genre, and this is so far the one I dislike the most. I'm not saying the author is a bad writer, she is very good at telling stories and sounds like a nice person. However, this book has very few accounts of real haunts. She considers dreams as real accounts or out-of-body experiences, which in my opinion are still just dreams. From the beginning it felt like she was expecting to find ghosts from day one and most of her perception seem like she truly wants to see something happen, like she's trying too hard. Also, she just assumes, also from day one, that the house is haunted by the last owner who just died. It seems like wishful thinking to me, I mean, it's an old house, it's bound be have many deaths in its history, and one can get really imaginative living in it.
I believe and like to read about the supernatural, but this book didn't convince me one bit.

prayer life.......2007-05-12
I've had trouble with my prayer life on and off like a roller coaster. I thought it would be that way forever, until I was given this book as a gift. The way Beth breaks down prayer and her explanation on what prayer could-should be, has helped me to focus and stay on track with my prayers. It's truly remarkable and the best prayer aid I've read. The only slightly negative part is that I usually run out of room when writing my prayers.
Want to learn how to pray?.......2007-03-30
This is a wonderful book for all of you who would really like to have a dynamic prayer life, but don't know what to do or how to start. Beth Moore is an inspired teacher and will guide you in developing a deep and passionate prayer life with God. Highly recommend.
great devotional.......2006-02-23
Beth Moore is one of the most down to earth, God-seeking woman I have had the pleasure to learn from through devotionals and bible studies. Whispers of Hope is a great daily reminder of how to connect with the Savior- reminding us to always start with praise. Her daily thought-provoking devotionals are really good and make you want to dig deeper into the Word. I am really enjoying this.
gems.......2003-05-24
There are some excellent gems packed in there. The photography alone is breathtaking.
A Book that Kept Me Sane!.......2001-04-16
Beth Moore's book divinely entered my life during a public crisis. By sharing with me, through her book, her insights to prayer and to actually "hearing" God's whispers, I was able to reconnect with my own spirituality and to objectively and positively manage the crisis I had to endure. I grately appreciated her insights, her humbleness which so awesomely shines through in her writing. Her ability to convey to the reader a keen sense of the importance of both the study of prayer and the practice of prayer can truly change your life! I am grateful for the "Journal" format provided in Beth's book. This feature enables one to look back and track the answers to prayer ensuring an enhanced daily spiritual commitment. Whispers of Hope can certainly be used as a tool to help one grow in faith and grace.

GOOD READ.......2007-06-01
I TRY TO GET EVERY BOOK SHE HAS WRITTEN. I LOVE HER BOOKS.
Great Book.......2007-01-08
This book has everything to make a great book, love, hate, murder, and deceit.
The story begins with two families that are fueding, the Taggert's and the Holland's.
Dutch Holland has three daughters, Miranda, Claire, and Tessa.
Neal Taggert has two son, Weston, Harley, and a daughter Paige.
Harley want's to marry Claire, but the families are against it, and Claire thinks that Harley is still seeing his ex-girfriend Kendall.
Weston is the wild son, the athlete, popular, great at the comapny they own, but nothing pleases him.
The story starts with Harley's death after Claire breaks their engagement, and the cover-up of who killed him, or was it really suicide.
The story goes to the past and then back to the present.
Dutch Holland wants to run for mayor, but he is afraid his daughters may have been involved with the murder 16 yrs. ago.
This was such a great book, and there is so much more than I could put in a review.
The love affairs when they were all teenagers, the people that disappeared, the ones's who fought against their family's name to have love.
I liked the part when Lisa Jackson takes the story back 16 years, I think that could have been the whole book in itself.
I liked the book, hated for it to end.
Was really one of the better books that I have read lately, but Lisa Jackson always writes good books.
Jackson Cranks up the Heat!.......2006-08-28
Lisa Jackson's romantic suspense `Whispers', is the kind of book I most enjoy taking on a holiday. It is filled with suspense, an easy read, hard to put down but if I have to, I can get back into it easily. Jackson knows how to write the perfect `getaway' novel. She is in my personal top 10, of female authors I read.
As the letter in the beginning of the novel states, `Whispers' is a reprint of an earlier 1996 edition that has been revised and includes "new twists and turns". I believe I read the earlier version as I've read almost all of Jackson's books, but since I'm an avid reader I don't recall for sure. All I do know is that when I want a good read, I pick one of Lisa Jackson's suspenseful novels.
`Whispers' is the story of three Holland sisters, one of whom may be responsible for murdering Harley Taggert, their father's rival's son. Claire Holland returns to her family lake house after sixteen years and struggles to keep a secret that has haunted her. Kane Moran, journalist-turned-writer from the `wrong side of the tracks' (or lake) has also returned. With one purpose in mind. To write the book by getting to the truth and exposing the murderer of Harley Taggert.
In a modern day Romeo and Juliet-like plot, Kane and Claire may come from opposite sides of the bank, but their attraction is raw, appealing and undeniable. In fact, all the characters are developed expertly, the pacing is taut and the revelations make sense. That is what makes a great suspense novel. If you're looking for a solid read with crisp characters and dialogue, check out `Whispers'. You won't be disappointed. Kudos, Lisa!
~ Cheryl Kaye Tardif, author of Whale Song (2007 Kunati Books)
Good story.......2005-05-15
I like the fact that the story starts in the present time, reverts back sixteen years earlier to get the background, and then returns to the present time to wrap things up. This held my interest until the very last page. This is the second book I've read by Lisa Jackson and I plan on reading more.
Okay book.......2004-09-12
This was a pretty good book but I can't stand finding grammatical erros and repitition. It was pretty engrossing at the beginning and then I found myself just trying to get to the end to find out who had killed Jack, Harley and Hunter. Weston was a true sleazeball and I had difficulty believing that any of the Holland girls fell into his grips at times. I haven't decided if this book was good enough to move on to more Lisa Jackson books. May give something else a try.

Customer Reviews:
Not much to recommend here.......2007-06-10
"Poorly paced; forced plot; tragedy after apparent tragedy; lots of 'huh?'s; shallow. Finally over!" That's what I wrote in my personal book journal. Somehow I made it through the whole series--skimming at times because I was so bored--but it never succeeded in reeling me in. Characters and relationships had the potential to be memorable and endearing but were insufficiently developed. I felt cheated as I would love to have gotten to know some of these people! The pace of the story was uneven--lurching into unbelievable places then dragging as characters dealt with what had happened. Disappointing from such a popular novelist. Two stars instead of one because, despite the story, I was at least given a glimpse of what life was like in early 1900's Alaska.
Whispers of Winter (Alaskan Quest).......2007-03-09
I loved the book. I love the trilogy. I knew I liked Tracie Peterson but this series sold me on her as my new favorite author.
A terrific Ending to a Magnificent Series.......2007-01-28
In picking up where UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS left off, Tracie Peterson quickly immerses the reader in the gripping conclusion to her thrilling "Alaskan Quest" adventure and historical inspirational series.
While Jacob Barringer and Jayce Kincaid are struggling for survival along with fellow crew members after their ship the Regina was stuck in Arctic ice floes, Leah Kincaid and Helaina Beecham are home in Last Chance Creek praying for their safe return.
Not always friends, Leah and Helaina had a tumultuous past. As a former Pinkerton Agent, Helaina has finally come to embrace the Lord, redefined who she is, and what has become really important in her life. Most of all, she's realized her love for Jacob Barringer and hopes that `when' he returns, for she will not believe otherwise, he will still love her and want her in his life. Leah naturally wants her husband home but finds her faith in God being tested after having to overcome many trials that have been put in her path. The journey has been long and hard, but through it all faith in God's graces will prevail.
People living in the Alaskan wilderness not only had to have strength of body and fortitude, but a devout strength in a belief of a higher power and this is brought home in spades in this final book in the Alaskan Quest series. Ms. Peterson has a rare gift for storytelling and this entire series (see SUMMER OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN and UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS) is a testimony to her well written and well researched stories as she gifts readers with an unforgettable historical inspirational tale featuring tremendous and brilliant characterizations with great historical background. This story packs an enormous emotional punch as you follow these wonderfully endearing characters from Last Chance Creek to Ship Creek (aka Anchorage) as they make their way in a challenging world. The story is bound to overwhelm you as you experience the trials and tribulations these people experience in their struggle to live in the glorious yet unforgiving Alaskan territory. Like me, you'll most likely cry both tears of joy for the gifts of life, and sob for the loss of loved ones, but through it all, you will be buoyed up by faith in the Lord and welcome the gift of storytelling from this amazing author.
While this third and final inspirational adventure could and does easily stand alone, I suggest it would be even more gratifying to start at the beginning and experience the thrill of this most impressive and absolutely superb inspirational series.

Customer Reviews:
I enjoy Kay Hooper books.......2007-01-05
This is the 7th Kay Hooper book I have read. I enjoyed this book as much as any of the others.
Intriguing and Suspenseful!.......2006-06-16
I might have read other Kay Hooper books before because it sounds so familiar ~~ at least the Bishop (the main character, Nell Gallagher's boss) sounds familiar, and the whole plot using the paranormal sounds familiar too. It doesn't matter really because it was a fun and intriguing read that has kept me guessing till the end. When I picked this book up, I was recovering from the flu and wanted something to distract me from being sick ~~ and this book did the trick.
Nell Gallagher returns home after twelve years to settle her father's estate and as an undercover FBI agent to discover who was murdering prominent citizens. There were four and each of them had a secret past that came to light after their deaths. It was mystifying and the local sheriff was getting desperate to find out who is stalking the townsfolks. Suspect after suspect have been eliminated but still, mysteriously, men were turning up dead and somehow it all links back to Nell's mysterious past. And with the paranormal stuff thrown in there ~~ it definitely makes it dark and intriguing.
It's a fast and entertaining read. It's not one of the more predictable reading either which makes it nice for those lazy summer afternoons. If you want to be entertained, I wouldn't hesitate to read this one!

Gotta read all Kay's Trilogy's.......2005-10-01
While the supernatural senses is consistent throughout each book, the story, theme and/or plot are so different you never solve the mystery til the end. Suspense, and literally heartpounding spookiness.
Evil.......2005-05-02
"Three victims have fallen to a killer's savage vengeance." In the book Whisper of Evil, you will find out exactly what happens in a small town where everybody knows everyone else in Silence. I'm going to let you know exactly what is going on there. Nell Gallagher has returned to Silence to find out who the killer is in the last 8 months there have been 4 murders on men, all men, no women. The FBI was brought in on the case undercover without the local police knowing. Nell has psychic abilities that help her find clues that no one could possibly image.
Nell goes back to Silence pretending to be there to settle her father's estate because her father had died a year earlier. When she gets to Silence she runs into Max Tanner her old boyfriend in which she ran away from home at 17 the night of her prom leaving him behind with no explanation on why she was leaving. However, she confides in him because he knows her abilities and what she can do.
In this book, it is up to Nell to find the killer and stop him before he kills anyone else. She is sure that there is going to be another murder. Nell can see into the future, also the past she can be in a place and concentrate hard, and she can tap into what has happened in that place at a certain time.
In addition, in this book whenever someone is murdered a secret that they didn't want anyone else knowing comes out into the open and everyone begins to know the truth about that certain person. So, try to find out why they are letting the secrets out into the open.
In this book, Nell is brought back to Silence to figure out murders and you will be shocked to find out who the killer really is. Therefore, read this book and try to see if you can figure out who it is and exactly why they are killing men.
This book is a great mystery novel that anyone would like to read that is if you are into mystery novels that will surprise you and make you guess at just who the killer might be. This book is good for high school students as well as anyone else. This book I think makes you accept that not everyone's perfect and that everyone is special in there own way.
Whisper of Evil by Kay Hooper.......2004-09-27
This is the second of three in a trilogy and the best of the three. Where the third gets too bogged down with trying to descibe how psychic ability works this one follows a good plot line to a final surprise outcome. I love Kay Hooper books and enjoy most of them. I definately recommend this one.

After 30 years, Sloan Reynolds is about to meet the father she never knew. Claiming that his ill health has led him to attempt reconciliation, Carter Reynolds invites Sloan to meet him and his other daughter, Paris, in the glamorous world of Palm Beach, Florida. With all the sense and courage that her job as a cop requires, Sloan refuses the invitation, convinced that nothing good could come from meeting her absentee father. But when FBI agent Paul Richardson intervenes and explains that Reynolds is under suspicion, she agrees to enter the world of the social elite in order to help investigate her father.
Prepared to hate Palm Beach and all its inhabitants, Sloan is surprised to find herself drawn towards Paris, her cranky great-grandmother, and Paris's neighbors, the Maitland family--particularly Noah Maitland. Noah has all the characteristics of Mr. Perfect, which is exactly what scares Sloan. How could someone so sophisticated, smart, and handsome be attracted to her?
But just as the two begin to explore their attraction, Sloan's hopes for her new family and friends crumble. Paul closes in on the dark truth about Carter Reynolds and his suspicions expand to include Noah. Soon, Sloan is an unwilling accomplice in the investigation against Noah, and when a horrible murder occurs, she just may be the next victim.
Bestselling author Judith McNaught has all the ingredients for a great romantic thriller in Night Whispers: the handsome and not-quite-aboveboard hero, the optimistic lady-cop, a handful of exotic and unreadable socialites, and all in all she delivers the goods. Even so, the fact that nearly everyone couples off at the end feels slightly trite, and the motivations of the true killer are somewhat unconvincing. Apart from these minor flaws, Night Whispers remains an entertaining and certainly worthwhile read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
Nine New York Times bestsellers and more than twenty million books in print have affirmed Judith McNaught's stature as the reigning monarch of superb storytelling. Now, she creates breathtaking suspense and harrowing plot twists In her most masterful, enthralling novel yet.
Night Whispers
A policewoman in a small Florida community, Sloan Reynolds knows that her modest upbringing was a long way from the social whirl of Palm Beach, the world inhabited by her father and her sister, Paris. Total strangers to Sloan, they have never tried to contact her -- until a sudden invitation arrives, to meet them and indulge in the Palm Beach social season.
A woman who values her investigative work more than a Dior dress, Sloan is unmoved by the long-overdue parental gesture. But when FBI agent Paul Richardson informs her that her father and his associates are suspected of fraud, conspiracy, and murder, Sloan agrees to enter into her father's life -- while hiding her true profession.
Sloan's on top of her game until she meets Noah Maitland, a multinational corporate player and one of the FBI's prime suspects -- and finds herself powerfully attracted to him, against her deepest instincts. When a shocking murder shatters the seductive facade of the wealth and glamour surrounding her, Sloan must maneuver through a maze of deceit and passion, to find someone to trust -- and to decipher the truth behind those terrifying whispers in the dark.

Ummm.....Not So Much.......2007-06-06
Let me add to the lengthy list of readers who are completely underwhelmed by this book. I expected more out of Judith McNaught, because I absolutely LOVE her historical romances; Kingdom of Dreams is on my all-time favorite list. So I stepped out of my historical romance comfort zone with one of my favorite authors, hoping she would help me embrace a modern romance story.
Didn't happen.
Sloan was unexciting, and I was unsure who the love interest was supposed to be as the two main characters didn't meet until well into the book. Then I wasn't sure why the FBI agent was so well-introduced if he wasn't the love interest. In fact, I was wondering when the sparks would start flying between Paul and Sloan when they started flying between Noah and Sloan. Then, Paul is sort of dropped from a lot of the action of the story for a while, making you wonder why all the build-up. Two other characters, who have a much more interesting story, are also relegated to the background. I was REALLY interested in what happened to them, but was left hanging.
I have bought Paradise, and hopefully it will be much better than this one!
Very good read!.......2006-07-29
I have read Judith McNaught in the past, and thought she was "okay", but not the best contemporary romance writer I've read. So I didn't expect too much from this one, just something to read fast and pass the time. But it was surprisingly good. I do not agree with the negative reviews and am confused by them. I thought the characters were great, and the romance was plenty in this book. And I certainly had no trouble foreseeing what couples would form. I truly liked the Sloan/Paris dynamic. I appreciated how the author wrote that, while any other writer would have had them at odds with each other and very cliche. I really felt that this novel was refreshing in a genre thats books tend to all follow the same formula, this one was different. I'd recommend it to anyone. :) Now, I must try her historicals.
Enjoyable- 4 and a half stars!.......2006-07-14
After reading numerous books by this author, I can safely say that she has never written a bad book. Inspite of the reviews, this book was very enjoyable for me and as usual, I was totally engrossed in her story and characters. The mystery plot was decent and the romance, while not like her previous books, was certainly tender and heartwarming. If you're new to Judith Mcnaught, I would suggest you start with Paradise and Perfect and also go on to try her breathtaking historicals. I just wish she would come out with a new book soon!
Page Turner...............2006-06-18
This story is about a police woman, Sloan, who agrees to visit her wealthy father (whom she had never met) in an effort to help the FBI gather evidence against him for laundering. The majority of the story takes place while she is staying at his mansion.
There are many slow parts in the novel, but overall it is a well-developed, sweet story about family, love, loyalty, trust, and deception. I enjoyed all of the characters and halfway through the novel I knew this book would be a reread. The romantic aspect of the novel was sweet, but I wish McNaught would have spent more time with the couple. The courtship was satisfying, but once the couple got together, there scenes were few and far between.
I'm surprised at the poor reviews. I thought this was one of McNaughts better contemporaries. :) Other good ones by McNaught are REMEMBER WHEN & EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE.
An enjoyable reading.......2006-05-24
I disagree with reviews saying that the title is misleading. "Night whispers" in this story symbolize all the secrets that caused Sloan many misunderstandings, and "night whispers" at the end turn into happiness (you have to read the last page to see this). I laughed so hard at the fifteen years old Courney and what she said. I read "Some one to watch over me" before and I am glad to see that she is in this book too. The romantic element does not shine as bright as other books by McNaught... but that is McNaught standard. I would have given this book 5 stars if it were by another author.

Book Description
IN THIS SEQUEL TO Run With the Horsemen, The redoubtable Porter Osborne, Jr., a little older and slightly more worldly, leaves the dusty security of his rural Georgia home for college. The year is 1938, but the story is timeless. Porter leaves the dusty security of his rural Georgia home--armed with the self-assurance of having been "Raised Right"--and goes off to Willingham University. Neither Porter nor the university will ever be the same again.

Great Read.......2007-04-05
For those of us who went off to college in the South and pledged a fraternity it will bring back great memories. Even though I went to college in the 1990's I was still able to relate to some of the stories.
A must read for any college student.......2006-10-15
I am currently in the process of transfering to Mercer University, which is the location of this story. It is a required reading of all Mercer students. After reading this very eloquently written novel, I have decided to go back and order the other two books in the trilogy. I found this book outright hilarious and entertaining. It also is a story of a youg farm boy coming of age. Anyone who is going to college can relate to some part of this book. I felt great releif in how much I could relate to the feeling and ideas of Porter Osborne Jr. Mercer has now made it a requirement that all of their students read this book. I feel that it is a easy reading story with many underlying ideas that can help influence the reader. The colorful story gives me a strong connection with the school and even life in southern Ga. I have ordered the other two books in this series. I cannot wait to read the conclusion of the Porter Osborne Jr. trilogy.
Wonderful, hilarious read!.......2006-08-04
This middle book of the Sams trilogy is even more delightful than the first. I read these out of order, reading the last one first. It's been a while since I read the last one, but I really enjoyed it (it's just not as fresh on my mind as the first two). This terrific somewhat autobiographical story (I would love to know how much actually happened)of a small town boy going away to college prior to and during part of World War II is endearing, always interesting, and highly hilarious. Sambo (the main character's nickname that he tried unsuccessfully to avoid at college)is serious about his studies but pulls, without getting caught most of the time, absolutely outrageous pranks on students, professors, and the cafeteria manager and dorm mother. I think that Ferrol Sams is one of the best Southern writers ever!
A different world.......2005-06-25
I would disagree with those who say that these are entertaining stories and nothing more. These books are an amazing window looking on to a different time and place. While the individual events I this book have me laughing out loud, I also come away with a better appreciation of life in Georgia in the late 1930's. What is really amazing is that I didn't think I had any interest in that place and time.
While I love this book, I don't think it is perfect. It could have used a bit more editing; I think it would have worked better with at least 50 fewer pages. Also, Porter is sometimes a tad too sweet. I am not sure I could have stood to be around him in real life.
One interesting side note is the portrayal of John Birch, the inspiration for the nutty John Birch Society. He attended Mercer at the same time as Mr. Sams and clearly left a strongly negative impression on him.
Glued to the pages!.......2004-10-19
If you are unaware of the author Ferrol Sams, you are missing a true giant in American literature. This second book of the Porter Osborne trilogy is just as golden as Run With the Horsemen. More than just a coming of age novel, Sams provides intricate detail into young Osborne's life, feelings and thoughts. Quite moving and actually sad when you find the last page is near, you'll quickly want to open up When All the World Was Young (#3). Dr. Sams is still practicing medicine in Georgia and has given us a treasure in his writings. Well worth it to purchase not only this book, but all three since you will find yourself thinking about them often after you've experienced them.
