Well, It Didn't Blow.......2007-04-25

I have to say, after the dismal and abysmal performance of the previous books Cornwell has written (Black Notice, Point of Origin, The Last Precinct) I was ready to believe that throwing this book across the room was going to be my fate. I am pleasantly surprised to report that I actually enjoyed the book. Scarpetta is out of Virginia and down in Florida working on cases as a consultant. Lucy is working on running the last precinct. And Marino, it seems, is just running himself into the ground. When characters from the past appear, we are taken from the streets of New York to the swamps of Louisiana as we unravel the mystery. I'd like to say that I'm hopeful the Chandonne family is out of Cornwell's system but something tells me we'll see them again. Hopefully the next visit with that family will put the past firmly to rest and allow Scarpetta to get back to what she's good at, solving grisly and unusual murders with the forensics she's famous for explaining. Otherwise this might still be one of the last Cornwell books I read.

So very unlike Cornwell's earlier works. This one has no likeable characters, a rotten ending, cruelty to animals, is depressing and you'll dislike everyone in it!

Many of Cornwell's fans are angry with her traipse into another genre where it's less heady, and she herself is so more human. Plus, it's fun. I loved Blow Fly. Fast, times of eeeeoooouuuuu. That would be me. The descriptions of charactors to actions are just as complex, but fed with a bowl ful of maggots...oh, i mean sugar. lol. I enjoy a good read by a writer who has mastered the word, then lets herself out of the literary cage and into the wild world of the imagination, changing first person narratives and just having a good time.
...Secret... I attended a rather exclusive school where literature was/is all that is/was. And as a writer also, and one who can't colour within the lines, i actually was applauded there. But, when i left, I not only got stuck in writing, but the first time I bought a 'best seller paperback' I felt like the spy in spy vs. spy, glancing this way and that just knowing I'd be caught buying 'basement material.' Now i am out, out out of the closet. I have so many best sellers i have nowhere to sleep. So, perhaps, I am experiencing a bit of cross transferrence with ms. Cornwell. Oh, well. Let it be.

The Last Precinct was probably her last good book. After that, she just stopped liking her characters and demeans them. Not even worth getting from the library. Even getting past the disgusting opening, it's boring. Too bad, her earlier books were worth collecting.
