Book Description

From the most trusted voice on transition, a revised edition of the classic practical guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change.

The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization.

Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change.

5 out of 5 stars Managing Transitions by William Bridges.......2007-05-13

This book is great! I was/am dealing with some pretty significant transitions -- the sudden death of my 21 year-old daughter, and a major division re-org at an S&P 500 company. Several months earlier, my VP had mentioned the book and suggested that all of his direct reports to read it. I did and it really hit home.

The author does an excellent job of describing the emotional and organizational impact of change and the mechanics of the process we use to get through it. We use the same basic process to deal with all change -- personal and professional -- and it has been very helpful to understand how it works. There is also a section in the book about the life cycle of an organization and that was illuminating. The book provided some tools to help me make critical decisions.

I bought six copies of the book and have given them out to friends and co-workers.

This was a great book and well needed. If your your in or responsible for transitions. This is for you - an eye opener to some great ideas and the author takes the reader to both sides of the good and bad involving the transitional process and how it should be done. Great insight!

Product Description

Jess Aaron's greatest ambition is to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. He's been practicing all summer and can't wait to see his classmates' faces when he beats them all. But on the first day of school, a new kid, a new girl, boldly crosses over to the boy's side of the playground and outruns everyone.

The story starts out simply enough: Jess Aarons wants to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade--he wants it so bad he can taste it. He's been practicing all summer, running in the fields around his farmhouse until he collapses in a sweat. Then a tomboy named Leslie Burke moves into the farmhouse next door and changes his life forever. Not only does Leslie not look or act like any girls Jess knows, but she also turns out to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. After getting over the shock and humiliation of being beaten by a girl, Jess begins to think Leslie might be okay.

Despite their superficial differences, it's clear that Jess and Leslie are soul mates. The two create a secret kingdom in the woods named Terabithia, where the only way to get into the castle is by swinging out over a gully on an enchanted rope. Here they reign as king and queen, fighting off imaginary giants and the walking dead, sharing stories and dreams, and plotting against the schoolmates who tease them. Jess and Leslie find solace in the sanctuary of Terabithia until a tragedy strikes and the two are separated forever. In a style that is both plain and powerful, Katherine Paterson's characters will stir your heart and put a lump in your throat.

5 out of 5 stars Still Magical After All These Years ..........2007-06-27

I wasn't going to write a review after seeing how many there are on this forum! But I just have to. I read this book when I was a youngster, oh so many years ago. I bought the 25th edition several years ago because I am collecting books that are on the banned list. Plus, I wanted my sons to read it when they're older. And no, I have not seen the movie. I picked this book up again after 32 years and it is still as poignant as it was when I was a kid. I still cried as much as I did when I first read this book. I still felt the magic of Terabithia as I did as a kid. This book is timeless.

Jesse Aarons is a middle child in a family of four daughters. Quiet and morose, he dreams of being the fastest runner in the fifth grade when school starts up again. He is also a budding secret artist. What he couldn't describe in words, he painted pictures in his head and sometimes, it actually came through his fingers. There is one scene where he described how he felt when he drawed ~~ like an addiction that starts at the top of his head that flows down to his toes and he's all warm and happy. There's Leslie, daughter of priviledged writers who moved to the countryside to get out of the city. Leslie joins the school and is the fastest runner in fifth grade much to the boys' chagrin. She befriends Jesse and together, they created a kingdom of dreams and magic in the nearby woods. Tragedy strikes and Jesse discovers there's more to his family than he thought before.

It is a beautifully written novel and still incredibly touching, even read as an adult. It is a hard topic to talk about let alone read about. Paterson writes lyrically of pain and death. She writes beautifully of life and how to enjoy life to the fullest. She writes of complex relationships between friends, siblings, parents, teachers and everyone else in town. And yet, she doesn't write overbearingly ~~ just simplistic and wonderful so even the younger readers can understand. She writes of life and death and most importantly, of hope.

This is a book that will be read over and over again and hopefully, my sons will discover the magic of Paterson's book in a few years. There is magic still to be found even among death.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons Galore: Grief, Financial Challenges, Compassion, Differences, Sameness, Love..........2007-06-10

Last Spring, I sat at my desk and heard my nine-year-old daughter, Emma, making some gulping sounds from the couch across the room. Then I heard some unusual, animal-type sounds from her direction. I saw the book she was holding bob up and down. I looked past the book to her face and there were tears streaming down her cheeks.

Right then she broke out in deep, heaving sobs.

We went to see the movie shortly after that - and we both sobbed, even when we knew what was coming. I think I even said, "Oh, no," aloud to the screen, as if my dismay could change the outcome.

It took me several months to have the courage to read this book - and I am glad that I finally did.

Bridge the Terabithia is the story of a young boy named Jess from a not-so-well-off family whose only dream - to be the fastest kid in school - who befriends the girl who snatches that dream away from him by running faster than any of the boys at Lark Creek School. Turns out Leslie - the girl, who moves into an old farmhouse near Jess' house - becomes one of Jess' great life teachers in more ways than one.

Together they create the magical land of Terabithia, a place in the woods that becomes a safe haven as well as a place to come to understand some things that can't be explained using "regular" terms... to "regular kids"... Jess and Leslie are neither.

This book is written, I am guessing, for fifth and sixth graders, primarily, but even younger children through adults could glean a lot from its pages. It could be seen as a simple story, but there are many layers to it.

Parents ought to read it, too, so they can discuss the variety of issues that are raised in the pages - from parents being laid off, to art and music, to understanding and compassion, to dealing with difficult siblings and how to get along with others.

Excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars I really Love the book Bridge to Terabithia .......2007-05-24

It started when Jess Oliver Aarons Jr. became best friends with his new neighbor, Leslie Burke. Together Leslie and Jess teach each other new things everyday, and build a strong friendship.

Jess wanted to be the fastest kid in the fifth grade. He would get up early every morning to run. Winning the race and being the fastest kid all changed when Leslie came and raced with the boys. Leslie took over and won the race. She proved she was the fastest in the fifth grade and everybody was shocked.

As Leslie and Jess became closer friends, they decided they needed a place of their own. After school one day, they headed into the forest to find a place. They came across a river with a rope above it; they crossed the rope to find an old tree house. This would now be their own secret place, and they called it Terabithia.

One day Jess came home and found that his parents were worried and his mom had been crying. He had no clue what had happened until his father spoke up. His father told him that there had been an unfortunate thing happen to his friend Leslie.

I really enjoyed reading this book because it has a lot of character. There are many things mixed in one: sorrow, happiness, and some humor. I would recommend this book to anyone, boy or girl.

5 out of 5 stars luke.......2007-05-22

I thought it was a really good book. But it was really sad when Leslie died. Although it kind of worked out because it taught Jess to use his imagination. He opened up more and I guess just taught him it doesn't matter what other people think just do what you want to do.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-20

I was taken by surprise at the end, so sad...but loved this book.

    Why We Love Harry
    Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

    * Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
    * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
    * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
    * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

    * The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
    * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
    * The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

    * Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
    * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
    * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
    * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
    * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

    * Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
    * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
    * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
    * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    * Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
    * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
    * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
    * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
    * Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    * The introduction of the Horcrux.
    * Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur's answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
    * Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling's most ingenious inventions.
    * Fred and George Weasley's Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
    * Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
    * The effects of Felix Felicis.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I'm sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

    Did You Know?

The Little White Horse was J.K. Rowling's favorite book as a child. Jane Austen is Rowling's favorite author. Roddy Doyle is Rowling's favorite living writer.

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable and inspiring.......2007-05-29

This book gives us a little window into the author's amazing life and a life of hurting horses and children. It is sad and inspiring at the same time. You get to "see" hurting horses and kids have a chance at really living. Wouldn't miss it. The first book is awesome too. Just by getting the books you are helping to support something great.

5 out of 5 stars Bridge Called Hope.......2007-05-21

Kim Meeder's ability to convey each short story whether of a horse and child, the journey of life, or of spritual growth through her own eyes is truly a gift.

Her first book, Hope Rising, that I received from a dear friend of mine, had me hooked instantly and looking for more. My friend and I are now living further away from each other than we ever imagined, however we are still connected through Kim Meeder's latest book, Bridge Called Hope.

Thank you Kim for keeping two friends connected, and for inspiring me deep within not only for my love of horses, but for rekindling the love for my family, my husband and son!

    5 out of 5 stars Heart-touching stories leave a lasting impression.......2007-03-01

Kim Meeder's Bridge Called Hope is a collection of stories about Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch. Meeder and her husband Troy bought some property in Central Oregon in 1993 and have refurbished the land into a successful horse ranch. Bridge Called Hope testifies to how they have used the ranch as a ministry to children. Kim relates biblical truths to her experiences as a rancher and to the relationships that have formed between the children and her horses.

Meeder writes with a poetic style, employing imagery, similes, and detailed description. She is skilled at writing vivid, emotional scenes. She addresses topics such as anger, love, death, encouragement, physical disabilities, abuse, friendship, and prayer. As the title suggests, the central theme is hope. The book also includes black-and-white photos from the ranch along with quotes from children Meeder has worked with.

Meeder's writing style and the large amount of stories about female characters may appeal more to women than to men. Bridge Called Hope would make a great gift for mother, daughter, wife, or friend. However, the heart-touching stories of this book may leave a lasting impression on any reader, regardless of gender, and especially on those who love horses and children. - Bridgette L. Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch is a place of hope and healing. In this sequel to the best-selling Hope Rising, Kim Meeder continues her stories of hope and healing at the non-profit Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, a place where broken horses and broken kids rediscover life and living.

The stories in A Bridge Called Hope are all true. Some are funny, many are heartbreaking, but hope is present throughout. As abused horses and damaged kids discover each other through their common pain, special relationships are forged and the baby steps toward wholeness begin.

    Highly recommended.

      Book Description

Whether it is chosen or thrust upon you, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Since first published 25 years ago, Transitions has helped hundreds of thousands of readers cope with these issues by providing an elegantly simple yet profoundly insightful roadmap of the transition process. With the understanding born of both personal and professional experience, William Bridges takes readers step by step through the three stages of any transition: The Ending, The Neutral Zone, and, in time, The New Beginning. Bridges explains how each stage can be understood and embraced, leading to meaningful and productive movement into a hopeful future. With a new introduction highlighting how the advice in the book continues to apply and is perhaps even more relevant today, and a new chapter devoted to change in the workplace, Transitions will remain the essential guide for coping with the one constant in life: change.

      5 out of 5 stars Very insightful........2007-02-13

On behalf of the millions of us facing major life changes such as retirement or the loss of a parent or spouse, I found this book to be timely and very helpful in explaining the 'transition' to a different life paradigm. And what a relief to know that the 'transition' can happen before the change. I am recommending it to my fellow "boomer" friends!

4 out of 5 stars Transition Is Not Change.......2006-11-02

Transitions by William Bridges walks you through transitions. He makes good distinctions in the differences between loss and grieving, simple change, and transitions. This belongs in your owner's manual for living.

Change has a goal. Transitions don't. In a transition, you have no idea where your path leads. To sedate myself, I often imagine the transition I am in is a simple change. This looks and feels like the denial process of grief.

I say to myself, "We're just moving to a place without stairs." Deep down where I avoid looking, I recognize this simple change is really transition. Our lives will turn upside down and I don't know who I will be or who we will be on the other side.

Transition has three stages that overlap, come and go.

      1. Endings: It is useful to identify what is ending in your life. For instance, my life as a father with children living at home is ending.

      2. Neutral Zone: This can look and feel like depression. Things go flat, rudderless, ambitionless. Time spent alone in silence, in nature works wonders.

      3. New Beginnings: You cautiously begin the new ways of living. The desire, of course, is to leap to the new beginnings before paying the dues of steps 1 & 2. I promise you, there is no short cut. You will pay those dues one way or another before you truly can begin. I suggest you pay them cheerfully and proactively by scheduling the time needed. It goes fastest that way.

Find out how the gospel is more than eternal salvation-it sets you free daily from sin's defeat and empowers you to experience God's abundant life. Now includes a study guide.

      Download Description

Why do so many believers live in quiet desperation? The gospel of Jesus Christ is the most explosive news of freedom the world has ever heard. Yet, why do so many of His followers experience so little of the gospel's liberating power? Regrets over our past haunt us, fear and anxiety clutch at us, subtle legalism oppresses us, outright sin entangles us, and we spend much of the day without even thinking of God. Jerry Bridges maintains that the poverty of actual Christian experience is the result of an impoverished understanding of the depths of the gospel itself. The key is not to try a little harder, but to know more fully the incredible work of Christ on the cross-and to live in a more vital awareness of that grace day by day. Bridges does not flinch from the hard facts of human sin and God's wrath-not exactly popular concepts today. But understanding them is absolutely crucial. For without a knowledge of the depth of our sin, we cannot experience "the unsearchable riches of Christ" that are available to us in the gospel. And when we know those riches, we are empowered to live every day "glorying in a sense of acceptance and the experience of grace." The gospel is not just for the afterlife, but for today-it is the gospel for real life.

4 out of 5 stars Bridges Helps Us Keep The Gospel Central.......2007-05-09

Jerry Bridges is one of my favorite authors. His writing is always clear, concise, saturated in Scripture and very edifying. The Gospel for Real Life is certainly no exception. Bridges gives his straight forward and simple thesis in the preface: "This book is not meant to be a theological treatise. To borrow an expression from the collegiate world, it is intended to be `Gospel 101.'"

Bridges' burden in the book is to help the Christian reader fully understand the gospel so that they can preach the gospel to themselves, everyday. Why? Because he is convinced that there are many sincere Christians in the church today who have a deep, troubling, yet private anxiety about their relationship with God.

He tells of a ministry colleague of his who "recently confessed that he felt overwhelmed and anxious even in the midst of fruitful ministry." He quotes Richard Lovelace to articulate the problem: "below the surface of their lives [they] are guilt ridden and insecure...[and] draw the assurance of their acceptance from God from their sincerity, their past experience of conversion, their recent religious performance or the relative infrequency of their conscious, willful disobedience." Where does this come from? Bridges contends that it flows from an inadequate view of the gospel.

Therefore, Bridges seeks to unfold the riches of the gospel of Christ in 15 chapters, discussing gospel essentials such as the depth of our sin, justification, atonement, Christ's sacrifice, reconciliation and the imputation of Christ's righteousness, just to name a few. He finishes the book with a final chapter (chapter 16) focusing on our responsibility to take this glorious gospel to the world. This responsibility, however, is not a duty to be done out of slavish fear or mere obligation, but an act of loving obedience in response to the glorious grace revealed in the gospel-the gospel that he labored to help the reader understand in the previous 15 chapters.

Personally, I have already read this book twice and I plan to read it again. It is very refreshing and strengthening. It keeps me away from the tyranny of trying to earn my righteousness and from the soul killing power of legalism. It is a simple book, and, as Bridges explains, not a theological treatise. But God help us if we think we are "beyond" such things. This is a book for baby Christians and seasoned theologians alike because it brings us back to where we are to constantly remain: relying fully on Christ and His gospel.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the Gospel for Real Life.......2007-01-13

this is the most thorough and understandable explanation of the Gospel I've ever heard. jerry bridges is a great man of God who obviously has lived his life and studied the Scriptures in such a way as to know these truths deeply! this book is insightful to mature believers, thorough to young believers, and explicit and clear to the seekers...great for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars A Dynamite Explosion of Gospel-Centeredness!!!.......2006-02-17

This is a volume that I commend to any believer who is serious about "boasting only in the cross." I keep several spare copies of this book to give away to those the Spirit leads me to.

5 out of 5 stars My review from www.CompleteInChrist.net.......2005-03-11

Jerry Bridges is one of my favorite authors. He is so clear. He is so personable. He is Christ-centered and gospel-centered in everything that he writes.

I find today that many Christians do not understand how the gospel relates to every day living. The gospel saves us. We all know that. But, what does the gospel have to do with my life today? Bridges helps us with that.

The book will help you to enjoy the gospel. We sometimes skip over many of the incredible doctrines related to salvation. We don't savor the truths. We don't LOVE the truths. Our study of salvation is merely academic. After each chapter of Bridges' book, you will want to have your own little celebration with God. You will want to set the book down, and pray to your great Savior.

As I said before, one of Bridges' strengths is his clarity. This is especially important when it comes to the gospel. Can you explain the gospel clearly...from the text of Scripture? Bridges will help the truths to be clear in your mind so that you are better equipped to share them with others.

Do you find yourself having a 'ho-hum' attitude about your salvation? A 'take it or leave it' attitude? Do you yawn a lot when you read what the Bible says about justification or adoption? Those truths are amazing! Those truths are what should motivate you to live a life of worship to God.

With Bridges' you will celebrate your life with Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Everything old is new again!.......2003-08-21

A previous reviewer mentioned that there was nothing new in this book but I heartily disagree. Tim Keller has said that the gospel "is a living power that continually expands its influence in our lives, just as a crop or tree would grow and spread and dominate more and more of an area with roots and fruit." Bridges is not mereley explaining doctrines in plain terms here. He is laying out the foundation for the successful Christian to walk and rest daily upon. The gospel for real life!

As he says in the book "to the extent that we understand and believe the truth regarding justification, we will experience a subjective peace--that is a sense of peace within our souls." That means we will want to experience every aspect of it, conform our wills to it, and offer it as an explanation to those in need of it.

This book has mighty implications and should be read and implemented thoughtfully!

      Book Description

Building the Bridge As You Walk On It tells the personal stories of people who have embraced deep change and inspired author Robert Quinn to take his concept one step further and develop a new model of leadership—“the fundamental state of leadership.” The exploration of this transformative state is at the very heart of the book. Quinn shows how anyone can enter the fundamental state of leadership by engaging in the eight practices that center on the theme of ever-increasing integrity—reflective action, authentic engagement, appreciative inquiry, grounded vision, adaptive confidence, detached interdependence, responsible freedom, and tough love. After each chapter, Quinn challenges you to assess yourself with respect to each practice and to formulate a strategy for personal growth.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, although no easy answers.......2007-03-10

Bob Quinn explores what it takes to be in the "Fundamental State of Leadership", stressing it is more about who a leader is than what a leader does to be effective. Eight practices are introduced which illustrate the creative tensions that exist in the leadership role. This book makes you think. Where each leader will come out on each of the 8 dimensions will depend on your own style and strengths, but the book serves as a great discussion/think stimulator to aid in the growth of your leadership ability.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Those who want to Effect Organizational Change........2007-02-19

Many books have great ideas about how to lead change but this one is exceptional. Mr. Quinn provides great case studies / examples using Appreciative Inquiry to reframe decision making and facilitate the always difficult task of transforming organizational culture.
While the book is a bit heady it does provide some refreshing insights on how to lead change without going crazy.

5 out of 5 stars It's All About Facing our own Fears.......2006-12-02

Walking naked into the wilderness. Being willing to talk about the elephants filling the room. Recognizing the trunk growing on my own face. Letting yesterday's organization go, those cozy perceptions that make our own inaction seem to be the safest way. Taking the road less traveled. Questioning my supervisor in an open, warm and respectful way---rather than complaining about him or her over lunch with a friend. Realizing the more of us who believe we are responsible for the organization we are part of, the more real that organization will become. That we are co-creators of our work reality--that there is no Them doing bad things to US.
These were many of the thoughts that emerged through my exploration of Robert Quinn's book Deep Change.

It is very challenging for me to evaluate Building the Bridge as I had the great privilege of Dr. Quinn including my story and some of my experiences once I faced my own fears at work several years ago.

There is no question in my mind, however, that Robert Quinn is a man of great wisdom and great gifts which he freely shares in a warm, personal and authentic way. After finishing his books I feel as though I have had a long conversation with a man who wants me to fulfill the purpose of my life. Such unselfishness is so rare in our age of narcissism and self-aggrandizement. I found his approach helped coax me toward being a more authentic, honest, and courageous leader.

No other author has brought me such insights in such an inviting and comforting way.

      Jeremy Fish, M.D.

5 out of 5 stars It will become a classic.......2006-11-25

Base on my understanding of the American society, I am not surprised that this book, like Quinn's previous book "Deep Change," doesn't get as many reviews as it deserves, but I am confident that this book, and Qinn's trilogy, will become classic down the line.

This book would seem esoteric for the society that is addicted to data and techniques, thinking that what we need is more information and skills in order to lead. It does require the reader to be more mature to understand the content at a deeper level. In my case, my understanding of Systems Theory helps a great deal. In fact, this book fills the gap that is missing in the systemic leadership books that I have read.

Edwin H. Friedman's A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix is one of the books that I like best on leadership and systems theory. However, even though it describes the sickness of the societies, organizations, families, etc. extremely well, it lacks the recommendation for the leader to develop the systemic quality to transform the society, organization, or family he or she is leading. Quinn's books fill the gap right on the spot.

As a Chinese living in America for 16 years, my concern is seeing the rampant reductionism in this society that seems to be leading America to gradually becoming like a third world nation that I escaped from. Books like this, though few, give me hope. America has a bright future if more leaders can chew this book, and its two siblings.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging and wholly worthwhile.......2006-10-22

Dr. Quinn and his colleagues have been working with us at Prudential Retirement to help create a culture founded on the concepts that arise from this book. The effect on our business has been significant. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

That said, this book asks a lot of its readers. It provokes reflection, thought and contemplation about organizational change and the inner change that must precede it. If you are looking for a quick airplane read on the subject, this book is definitely not for you. If you have some reflective time to devote to this complex subject, it will provide an outstanding return on your investment. The book and its author possess an authenticity that you will appreciate.

This latest release of Interconnections is a competent update of a networking classic. Radia Perlman explains hundreds of details about getting computers--and computer networks--to talk to one another smoothly, accurately, and efficiently. Perlman, inventor of the spanning-tree bridging algorithm, covers the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model, bridges, switches, hubs, Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), plus connection-based and connectionless networks. She also does a great job of explaining the underpinnings of internetworking protocols, including packet format, addressing, routing (both generically and in terms of RIP, RTMP, OSPF, and other protocols), and security. There's plenty of IPv6 information here, mostly from a theoretical vantage point.

The best parts of Perlman's approach to her subject are the little thought experiments that explain why various aspects of internetworking behave the way they do. For example, Perlman talks about Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) discovery by presenting four different hypotheses for figuring out MTU. For each possible solution, she discusses strengths, weaknesses, and real-life considerations. She applies this method to dozens of other problems and phenomena, making Interconnections a very close approximation of learning by experiment. --David Wall

Topics covered: Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model, bridges, switches, hubs, Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), and internetworking protocols.

"Interconnections 2nd Edition - Bridges, Routers Switches and Internetworking Protocols" by Radia Perlman is simply a magnificent book. This book is a one-stop introduction to both Layer 2 and Layer 3 of the OSI model. This book will not teach you how to configure equipment - but what this book will teach you is how different protocols interact with each other. Most books only focus on either layer 2 or layer 3, but this is the one book that discusses both layers better than most books discuss each layer individually!

Some typos that I noticed in the 2nd edition:

      Page 186 - concerning the 4th bullet - a router would fragment a 1,200 byte packet to a 1,000 byte packet and a 200 byte packet - not a 1,000 byte packet and 2,000 byte packet.

Page 209 - The IPv6 address that starts as FEA0::/10 should really be FEC0::/10

It is obvious when reading this book that Perlman is writing about a subject that she both has mastered and cares deeply about. She holds over 50 patents and has earned her Ph.D. from M.I.T. Simply a great book.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:

This book is a fantastic voyage through the world of networking. For newbies, it presents complex ideas in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way, keeping you away from an alphabet soup of acronyms. But, it also appeals to experts as well, with its insider's view of the design of various network protocols. Even with many years of networking under my belt, I found myself reading this book constantly saying, "So, that's why they did it that way!" The wealth of information in this book should not be overlooked. The writing style is also crisp, clear, and highly engaging.

Perlman does a fantastic job of writing about a topic she's obviously passionate about. Her ability to convey complex networking topics simply makes this book an excellent introduction to the subject, a great guide for people who don't need to be experts (i.e. marketing folks), and a technical text book. This book is both incredibly informative and entertaining, spiced with some of her own views, annecdotes, and history of networking. A great read, can you believe I would say that about a networking text?

5 out of 5 stars Audrey Grant is The Best Bridge Teacher!.......2007-03-23

If you are new to bridge I highly recommend purchasing all four of Audrey Grant books in the ACBL Series... CLUB, DIAMOND, HEART AND SPADE. She is unquestionably the best bridge teacher for a novice. In layman's terms she is able to explain and unravel the mysteries of bridge. If you begin with the club book and progress through the series as they increase in difficulty... club, diamond, heart and spade you will be able to teach yourself how to become proficient in bridge painlessly. Her books are written in lesson formats... and they are used by many people who instruct bridge classes i.e. adult ed. Buy one... I'm sure you'll add the other three to your library. I also highly recommend her "Bridge at A Glance" pocket guide which is a quick synopsis of bidding and the appropriate respones thereof. I bought many bridge books before I stumbled upon Audrey Grant and wish I had found her books first! Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars The How and Why of Bridge Bidding Revealed.......2006-12-23

It makes sense. No cryptic assumptions by the author. Discussion of every possibility, how to react, AND WHY. One of the best "tutorials" i have read in my life.
I started to learn bridge with one friend teaching a group of three. Made no sense. I bought this book, got pulled into the chapters, and at our next practice, i was leading half the session and teaching everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Bridge.......2006-11-07

This is a great book for those interested in learning about Bridge. We are using it along with an instructor and it is great. Highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I wanted........2006-06-10

I've been considering returning to contract bridge after a 10 year hiatus and wanted to brush up on my bidding. I was looking for an intermediate/advanced overview of American Standard. This is a basic textbook obviously designed to be used in a classroom with a teacher. You will get basic bidding techniques and some recommendations on play. You won't get any conventions past Blackwood, Gerber or Stayman. Transfers, Unusual Notrump and the like aren't covered. If you're a beginner, this is a good starting point, though it would be best to use it with an instructor. If you're an intermediate or advanced player. Look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - Best Used in a Bridge Course.......2006-03-23

Audrey Grant's books - like Introduction to Bridge are exceptional. They are best used in a bridge class/training session where an instructor can lead and help the student through the the basics of bridge learning. The value of Audrey Grant's books are that they present a system of bridge which has revolutionized modern bridge.
