5 out of 5 stars An honest search for truth.......2006-11-15

As a creative nonfiction student, I have read a number of memoirs and have found few to be as honest in its search for truth as Karen Spears Zacharias' "Hero Mama." Zacharias is a natural storyteller. Her style captivates the reader as she attempts to unravel the events of her life and to understand how the tragedy of losing her father to war impacted her family. The reader is left laughing one minute and crying the next as she glimpses into Zacharias' journey from loss to redemption. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for historians and students; for daughters and families.......2006-05-02

I've read much history of war and came upon this book with interest, as I hardly ever read memoir. But I found the author's voice to be simple and refreshing, and her unjaded eye rang very true in recounting her life before and after her soldier father died in Vietnam.

So many southern men fall in war, and this down-to-earth, honest account should be on the reading lists for high schools and historians alike, as it gives an honest and moving account of the real costs of war on American and American families.

5 out of 5 stars Lest We Forget.......2006-01-31

I am huge fan of Southern Fiction Writers (P.Conroy,A.R.Siddons,R.Wells.
I am also the only daughter of
S/Sgt Lewis Walton (SF:Army:MIA-1971). With my baby brother serving in Iraq, I was both hesitant and curious about this book.In my estimation, Karen's account was personal and inspirational.More importantly it sheds light on what life was like for "us kids". Her story should be shared with many and be required reading for ALL high school AND College Classes which focus on Vietnam. Vietnam affected more than just the brave soldiers serving- their parents, children and grandchildren. Kind of makes you think about Aft. and Iraq. A definite must read!

4 out of 5 stars Well written and thought provoking.......2005-11-04

Karen's memoir is one of truth and inspiration. Not only because of her mother's courage and strength in the face of such tragedy, but in Karen's journey in seeking the truth about her father's death, a truth that would result in redemption for her, and her family. Hero Mama is a well-written, thought provoking memoir, and its subject, the aftermath of war and how it affects those left behind, is never more timely than right now.

5 out of 5 stars I Honor My Hero Grandma.......2005-10-25

Throughout the pages of this book, Karen shares her life with all of us whether we be widows, children, or like myself grandchildren of war. Living a life of unanswered questions and digging for those answers through her own bravery, Karen recounts the cherished nine years of her life she spent with her father as well as the 30 fatherless years that lied ahead beginning on July 24, 1966. She recalls the struggles of childhood and the successes that her mother set out to achieve to raise three children on her own without choice.

Wanting answers myself to questions about a grandfather I never knew, I seized every moment of this book with overwhelming emotion. I had tears of sadness, tears of happiness and continue tears of pride for my own "Hero Grandma" who raised seven of her own children due to the loss of her husband in VN in April 1966.

"Hero Mama" will be a book you will be unable to put down once you open and read that first page. I know that you will have a different view of war after completing such an emotional journey with Karen. I am one of many who am thankful to Karen, for sharing her family's gallant journey of life with all of us. Her family remains in my heart.

      Book Description

"The Hero in My Pocket" is a unique resource for children whose lives are affected by the death of a U.S. military service member. A child's "Special Hero" may have served in any branch of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines, and any component: Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve, in peacetime or time of conflict. With the death of their father -- their own "Special Hero" -- Greg, age 10, and Grace, age 7, find that children in military families often face additional losses compared to their non-military family peer group. As a key part of the process of mourning, Greg and Grace honor and remember their "Special Hero" and invite the reader to do the same using "Hero Pages" for drawing and writing. The unique format also includes open-ended questions to encourage communication and understanding among children and adult caregivers. Along with the military themes, concepts on grief and recovery are age-appropriate, meaningful, and relevant to the relationship a child values with their own "Special Hero." Suitable for ages 6 to 12 years.

      Book Description

In a major new biography, veteran military historian and WII biographer, Charles Whiting combines both talents to tell the tale of barefoot Texan share-cropper's son, who could barely read and write, but became not only the US Army's most decorated soldier in its 250 - year history, but also the star of forty Paramount produced movies: most of which are shown on TV screens around the world to this very day. The gentle-eyed, baby-faced hero had won every decoration the United States had to offer before he was eligible to vote and killed 240 enemy soldiers in the process. Luck made him a movie star. Always he tried to improve himself, but time and time again he was relegated to the 'horse operas', where as he wisecracked cynically, "it was the same old movie, only they changed the colour of the horse." But there was a price to pay for his heroism in drugs, nervous tension and Murphy's addiction to violence. Even as a middle-aged movie star, he always slept with a .45 beneath his pillow, plagued by nightmares of the war. Murphy had been an ordinary boy, who had volunteered to go to fight and did so with exceeding bravery in the last 'good war'. He paid highly for that bravery and sense of duty to a country which had given him nothing save "malnutrition", as he used to quip. He was that last American Hero, who did as President Kennedy proclaimed, " Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Even before his young life had really commenced, he had become a legend. But in the end 'Tinseltown' and the 'feather merchants' of Hollywood broke him. As Time magazine commented on his death; "Audie Murphy belonged to an earlier, simpler time, one in which bravery was a cardinal and killing was a virtue... We shall not see his like again."

4 out of 5 stars Audie Murphy deserves much more........2007-04-13

I used to watch his films when I was a child and I still am a fan of him mainly because of his heroism as a soldier. If you want to see his truly heroism just watch "To hell and back". There you are going to see what was "a true war hero" and understand that a soldier like this won't born in this world anymore. He was not an ordinary soldier, he was the best one. I agree that this book doesn't match his importance to American history, but where many men that have never attended to any war get rich writing books about their times as protesters in front of Lincoln Monument, it's easy to understand why American people want to forget this kind of a man. Mainly because he was not graduated in any great university. Soldiers have been dying for countries that don't give a damn for them at all. But as a first book about this great American is a good choice, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Face Hero, To Soon to Rest........2007-03-29

A great book on a great American war hero. Not as detailed as I would have liked, but for it's size (239 pages) a good buy.

2 out of 5 stars Murphy must have been more interesting than this.......2006-11-16

Considering he is America's most-decorated soldier, the story of Audie Murphy's combat career as told by Charles Whiting is amazingly dull. There is no convincing explanation given for Murphy's extraordinary actions, and the descriptions of the combat itself are lacking in detail, so it's hard to come up with a feeling for what might have been going on in Murphy's head at the time. It's possible, I suppose, that Murphy just stumbled into heroism like so many before and since, and that he is not really extraordinary at all. That doesn't seem to match the "troubled loner" picture that Whiting describes, but maybe that's all there is. And a final note on the editing ... I have never seen such poor production. The number of spelling mistakes, missing words and missing punctuation in this text are beyond belief. I would guess an average of one glaring mistake every 4 or 5 pages, sometimes in big bunches that make you wonder how this book was brought to market.

      4 out of 5 stars Book review.......2006-07-10

Interesting but a little dry at first since I am not a 'war buff' simply a Audie Murphy fan. I would, however, recommend it for it's content and pictures.

          Book Description

“Enthralling and intelligent, a masterly exploration of
the sinister labyrinth that was wartime France . . .
It is a remarkable book, utterly fascinating.”
          —Allan Massie

Not long after 2:00 p.m. on June 21, 1943, eight men met in secret at a doctor’s house in Lyon. They represented the warring factions of the French Resistance and had been summoned by General de Gaulle’s new envoy, a man most of them knew simply as “Max.”
Minutes after the last man entered the house, the Gestapo broke in, led by Klaus Barbie, the infamous “Butcher of Lyon.” The fate awaiting Barbie’s prisoners was torture, deportation, and death. “Max” was tortured sadistically but never broke: he took his many secrets to his grave. In that moment, the legend of Jean Moulin was born.
Who betrayed Jean Moulin? And who was this enigmatic hero, a man as skilled in deception as he was in acts of heroism? After the war, his ashes were transferred to the Panthéon—France’s highest honor—where his memory is revered alongside that of Voltaire and Victor Hugo. But Moulin’s story is full of unanswered questions: the truth of his life is far more complicated than the legend conveniently manufactured by de Gaulle.
Resistance and Betrayal tells for the first time in English the epic story of France’s greatest war hero, a Schindler-like character of ambiguous motivation. A winner of the Marsh Prize for biography, praised by Graham Greene and Julian Barnes, Patrick Marnham is a brilliant storyteller with a keen appreciation for the complex maze of moral compromises navigated in times of war. Told with the drama and suspense of the best espionage fiction, Resistance and Betrayal brings to life the dark and duplicitous world of the French Resistance and offers a startling conclusion to one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Second World War.

5 out of 5 stars Exposing the myths surrounding French resistance..........2006-07-07

This book along with Ted Morgan's AN UNCERTAIN HOUR, should be on your must reading list if France during the Nazi occupation is of any interest.

Exposing the many competing factions that made up the resistance movement and how even the common German enemy could not prevent them from working for their own interests first and France's second.

His chapter dealing with excesses of the resistance forces during the L'epuration was the most interesting to me, as the french populace had no time to rejoice for the removal of fascist terror, as they were immediately confronted with communist inspired terror led by the resistance. The many acts of terror comitted by the resistance have never received the condemnation that they deserve, as well many Vichy police officials were able to segue smoothly into the new french government apparatus and were able to avoid any examination of their wartime activities.

This book was disturbing to me, in that as in life as well as war, many people acclaimed as heroes were not heroic, and that sadly many of the real heroes will never get their just recognition for their own bravery and selflessness.

Marnham's style makes this read more like a detective novel and less like the non-fictional historical book that it is.

2 out of 5 stars This author has an ulterior agenda.......2003-03-26

I was enthusiastic when I found this book since English books on Resistance are few, and books about Moulin are very rare. But I was to be disappointed.

The author claims to seek the real man behind the legend of Jean Moulin, who became the symbol of French Resistance, and it is a very worthwhile objective indeed except that it is impossible. So after he admits that very little is known about Moulin, he proceeds to fill these unknowns with conjectures built on conjectures, and it soon becomes clear that the purpose of this book is not to find the human and real Moulin, but to discredit the left-wing of Resistance at his expense.

Jean Moulin is French JFK. Now universally admired, he is shadowed by circumstances of his betrayal and death, and numerous conspiracy theories have crept up. Only difference is: here in America, a crackpot theory that LBJ is behind the plot wouldn't get any ink in the mainstream. But in France, most ridiculous assertions are taken seriously because Moulin is used by both the right and left wing to discredit one another. So in recent years, it has been alleged that Moulin is a Soviet agent, an OSS(pre-CIA) agent, an anti-Gaullist, etc with the most tenuous "evidence". While Moulin has not yet been accused of being a Nazi mole, the author insinuates possibility that Moulin betrayed himself (along with 7 other Resistance leaders) in this book. So finally, the whole ground is covered.

His right-wing tendencies and contempt toward the Republic and all it stands for is quite obvious from the first pages and color the whole presentation. His most assertions are easily refutable by anyone familiar with Resistance history, but unfortunately this book is most likely to be the first book on Resistance to most of readers, and that's why I'm getting riled.

I'll give just a few of many examples.
Simply put, the author's assertion that the communist party is most likely betrayer of Moulin just doesn't hold water. I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory that royalists betrayed Moulin either, but at least that theory has some basis if only tenuous one. So in order to bolster his theory, the author strives to make Moulin a crypto-communist, which is solely based on Moulin's connection to Pierre Cot.

The author makes a big deal of Moulin's contact with Cot's associates after the Fall of France. Considering that Moulin spent most of his career in local governments and his only stint in national politics was with Cot in Air Ministry, it is not surprising that Moulin met Cot's associates for informations on resistance organizations nationwide. But to the author's mind, this is a proof that Moulin was interested only in communist organizations. The author admits that even if all his assertions turn out to be true (and they are not) that it doesn't mean that Moulin was a communist. However, later in the book, he flatout states that Moulin was more concerned with the future of Soviet Union than France.

There is no doubt that Mouin was a left-wing republican, sympathetic to the cause of Spanish republic. He even smuggled French aircrafts to Spanish republic to aid their cause (in what is close to our Iran-Contra scandal). However, we simply cannot know what Moulin's opinion was regarding communism and Soveit Union at the time. What is definitely known is that when Germany and Soviet Union signed Non-Aggression Pact, Moulin as a prefect, clamped down on the communists. When Vichy government decreed anti-Jewish laws, Moulin dragged his feet in enforcing it and interned no one, but when it came to communists, he showed less reluctance.

The author mentions these facts, as well as the fact that a Soviet informer reportedly incorrectly that Moulin was an OSS informer, but they are not taken into account when he insinuates that Moulin provided sensitive information to Soviet Union. Nor does he find it contraditory to claim that this Soviet informer was close associate of Moulin.

Secondly, the author is skeptical of veracity of biographical or personal accounts - including Moulin's - and rightly so, yet he loses objectivity when it comes to negative accounts made by Henri Frenay This is even more surprising since these accounts are from Frenay's book that was specifically written to discredit Moulin long after Moulin's death.

No same courtesy is shown to Moulin. The author admits that Moulin's accounts (about his time as a prefect) are all true in the areas that can be verified by facts. But when it come to areas that can't be verified, like what went on in Moulin's mind when he cut his throat, the author is skeptical and ready to assume the worst.

I could go on and on. And maybe I will when I finish the book, if only because this book is a most widely available book on Moulin, and that's a shame.

          3 out of 5 stars Invention.......2002-05-22

Marnham admits that the character and personal life of Jean Moulin are at best vague and little of these aspects of the man are known. He then proceeds to build a highly speculative picture of Moulin, largely derived from secondary sources, and drags in the usual "was he a communist agent or was he not?" nonsense. Having just completed a reading of "France: The Dark Years 1940 to 1944" by Julian Jackson, by far the best comprehensive coverage of that miserable era in French history, I found Marnham's book, journalistic and amateurish. It adds nothing new and revives a few red herrings.
What lacks is a framework for the events related For example, much is made of Moulin's reception of the Germans as a Prefet, when he acted 'correctly' and cooperatively. No mention is made by the author of the terms of the armistice whereby officials were constrained to behave 'correctly'. Another important element in the situation of France in 1940 that goes unexplained or remarked is the reliance France had placed on having an agreement with the Soviet Union to protect, as in WW1, against a 100% German effort dircted against her. The mission to effect this, with the Brits as partners, was delayed and delayed due to British dragging of feet. Stalin found it was easier to gain the time he needed by making an agreement with the future enemy. However, the desire to have a mutual defense pact with the USSR renders the behavior of people like Pierre Cot explicable in terms other than 'communist agent' or betrayal. I find the lack of background and framework leads to inconclusiveness and even an element of misinterpretation of events and people. It detracts considerably from whatever value the book may have. In the first 20 pages, I found several errors of fact and in later pages contradictions about Moulin himself. If anyone is interested, I will be happy to point them out.

5 out of 5 stars THE FACE OF FRANCE.......2002-05-10

Every person capable of reading "Resistance and Betrayal" needs to read Jean Moulin's example of character and humanity at its highest level. Every high school and college student needs to understand his granite will, the demands of such a great freedom quest, and the ability of one human being to take on the daunting task of freeing his homeland from tyranny. Moulin shows that one person with a vision can indeed make a difference.

When I saw the face of Jean Moulin on the Cover of "Resistance and Betrayal," tears erupted from my eyes on down my face. The instant emotion shocked me, forced me to pick up the book. The tears still come every time I see the face of Jean Moulin.

Why? Jean Moulin is one of the few heroes who took responsibility out of goodness rather than vainglory. Jean Moulin cared so much for the freedom of his Beloved France that he suffered until death to achieve this grand goal and become the greatest hero of the French Resistance.

As an artist, Jean Moulin speaks to my heart and soul. I must paint him, create him in an image that speaks to his greatness.

Read Jean Moulin through Patrick Marnham and come away knowing that greatness is possible for any human being determined to realize a vision for the good of the people of a country, like Moulin, like Ghandi.

          Book Description

The "Hero Journey" from dependent child to responsible adult is a central theme in all the world's mythologies. At the same time, the equally compelling journey from youth to middle age has been largely ignored. John Robinson sets out to correct that oversight in Death of a Hero, Birth of the Soul, a study of the spiritual and psychological realities of male midlife. By blending psychological research, mythology, poetry, mysticism, and personal experiences, Dr. Robinson weaves a story that is uniquely personal and speaks to the heart of every individual excited about the possibilities of entering the second half of life.

          1 out of 5 stars Mystical.......2005-02-07

This book places a great deal of emphasis on spirituality and/or mysticism. I found it rather unscientific and while it did offer a few insights, overall it was not worth the time spent reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must read' for men.......2001-10-18

John Robinson so accurately describes and maps out the life of men, at least as I have experienced it over the past 40+ years, that it would be frightening if the release and feedom this perspective brings wasn't so exciting. As I read this book many, many experiences in my life started to make so much sense and fall into place. If you have thought that there is something missing or there should be something more to life, then read this book. If you are at a stage where you want to make some changes in your life then the insight this book brings provides you with a wonderful perspective from which to make them. More to the point if you that mid-life age where changes may be happening whether you choose it or not go read!

1 out of 5 stars Another touchy feely book!.......2001-08-02

Okay, here is another book that was given to me as a joke for my birthday! What is with guys these days? I went through my fortys and fiftys working two jobs to get my kids through college. I knew my responsibilies, and when I leave this good earth, I will have the knowledge that I left behind my legacy of hard work and honesty with my children. THAT is the grand prize at the end of the fair. Did I ever have feelings of regret? NOT ONCE! Did I ever look at my wife of 30 years with doubt? NOT ONCE! Yes, women, there are good men out there that don't dwell on things that are selfish and basically frivolous. Yes, there are men out there that will treat you like gold. Don't look for the touchy feely guys. They have way too much time on their hands. Oh, and for the guys who read this book? Grow up! Do some good before you die. Make the ones who love you and care for you happy. Believe me, when you look down that road, every bit of kindness and respect you have shown others will be your guiding light, and it will bring you the ultimate peace at the days end. Start by bringing your wife a flower, and telling her she is the most important thing in your life. Next, hug your kids, and tell them to remember that hug for the rest of their lives. Next, tell yourself that you are a man, and that you are happy and content. If that doesn't work, go down to the VA hospital, and talk to some real men! You think life is hard now? Listen to what they went through, and be glad you are living the life you have. You are the only one who can make yourself happy, and there is happiness wherever you look. I always find mine in the smiling face of my granchild, and the loving smile of my wife. If she doesn't feel like smiling? Tickle the heck out of her! Life is truly a joy especially when you know that you've done right by the ones who love you the most.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! Made sense of the doubt & confusion in midlife..........1999-10-20

Told me why it was natural for me to want to transition from a successful engineering career to become an acupuncturist in midlife (in retrospect, as a young child I had visions of becoming either a minister or a doctor--now, I'm a little of both as the owner of Calm Spirit Oriental Medicine). I read this book after many years into the transition--a part of me wishes that I had read it *prior* to starting the switch; another part knows that I wouldn't have appreciated the author's wisdom nearly as much then. I especially enjoyed reading the same material from three different perspectives, including mythology and poetry. Actually spent an evening sharing some of the poetry with my wife, the English teacher. Now, I have loaned my copy to an engineer friend who seemed to need it.

I'm 49 yo. What's more to say? How about 352 pages that brought tears of recognition and smiles of understanding at a very confusing time of my life. I highly recommend it to men AND women who are interested in a rich passage through life BEFORE, DURING, or AFTER midlife reassessment. Robinson approaches the life of a man from a universal/eternal viewpoint. The text is elaborated, supported, and illustrated with fairy tales and myths from many cultures, as well as principles of modern psychology, Jungian archetypes, and generous doses of poetry and spiritualism. The book is thoroughly entertaining, as well as practically explanatory and comforting. Among much reading that I did to try to understand what was going on in my life, this work was truly pivotal. Just, by chance, this book leapt out at me from a standard bookstore shelf one day, and I've not seen it on the shelves again--a great misfortune for others. If you're interested in understanding "a man's life" and have found this book here on Amazon, take the risk!!!! There is much solace here.

Mr. Whiting spends so much time quoting Murphy's autobiography "To Hell and Back" that a reader would do much better with that well-written book instead of this turgid avenue for the author's own unsupported views. Don't Bother.

3 out of 5 stars A curious book that breaks no new ground........1997-06-14

Whiting's is the latest of the Murphy biographies and shows no evidence of new research on the subject. He reports what was published in two previous bios, by Simpson and Graham, and fills the gaps with annoying speculations about his subject's thoughts and motives. One of the more interesting stories, about how Murphy plotted to kill Howard Hughes for stealing his girlfriend Jean Peters, is not substantiated by reliable sources. The book contains a few photos but not much else to recommend it. Get it if you want to complete your library of Murphy bios, but get the other two first
