Book Description

"One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year....Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting."—Entertainment Weekly

Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries—from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

5 out of 5 stars Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.......2007-06-18

After getting some very uneducated answers from a cremation society, I was fortunate to find this very enlightening book. I have always had a desire to donate my body to science. After reading this book by Mary Roach, I am sure that I have made the correct decision. (I don't care what the cremation solicitors say---they are really trying to sell something. Mary is not.) This is a great book, a lot of fun, but very serious, too.

4 out of 5 stars A gleefully gruesome look at mortal remains.......2007-06-17

Stiff is an entertaining read as well as an informative one. It looks at diverse ways in which dead bodies have proved useful, from medical research (including teaching aids for cosmetic surgeons), to sources of spare parts (including teeth and blood), to use as crash test dummies and compost. It may disturb anyone who does not accept Roach's thesis that there is nothing sacred about corpses and that it is better to recycle them in some way than to bury or cremate them, but I enjoyed her largely humorous look at the topic immensely.

Sadly, while it's full of fascinating trivia, it's significantly less useful as a reference work than, say, Kenneth Iserson's excellent Death to Dust: What Happens to Dead Bodies. For one thing, it's far less comprehensive (though to be fair, it doesn't pretend otherwise). My main gripe, however, is that there's no index! For that, it loses one star: it's still definitely worth reading, but it's not a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Stiff.......2007-05-19

Have you ever wondered what happens to people who donated their bodies to science, or people who aren't identified in crimes? Well if that has ever crossed your mind or you've ever cosidered donating your body, to science this is a GREAT book. This book takes you all over the U.S. and shows all the different things, scenerios, and uses for the dead.
Most people wouldn't even think about the things that cadavers help us do; like the air bags in your car... would you ever think that a dead person could keep you alive? It might sounds weird, but have you ever wondered how much your soul weighs, or how much you can actually eat before your stomach burst? If you want the answer you'll have to read it.
There are so many things that we couldn't do, have, or use if it wasn't for educational studies on the human body.
Some people think that the dissection of another human is gross or inhumane. Well if your one onf those people i strongly suggest that you read Stiff; It really justifies the whole process, Mary Roach tells how without the studies our lives would be harder. She also explains how far and accepted they've become.
No matter what the reason, if you're considering donating you're body to science, you're just wondering what the whole thing is all about, or you just want some thing new to read, Stiff is the perfect book!

5 out of 5 stars Informative, Entertaining, and Outrageously Funny.......2007-05-14

I rarely read non-fiction, but the cover of this book grabbed me. Boy, am I glad I picked it up! Filled with tons of facts about the uses of cadavers, many of which I'd never considered (crash-test dummies, police training, fertilizer), the book's footnotes are not to be missed.

Terrifically funny without being irreverent, Mary Roach has written an informative book that got me thinking about what I want done with my body after death.

Not to mention the best line, ever, in a book: "Well, do me chicken."

4 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2007-05-13

This was a fun read, though it is hard to use the word "fun" when refering to the subject of what happens to bodies after death. At points in the book I would not recommend snacking while eating but Mary Roach handles her subject respectfully throughout. The author's voice is loud throughout and I thought she danced around the motivation for her exploration. This was an interesting book.

5 out of 5 stars Great information and an easy read to boot...........2002-01-24

For the starting cadaver dog handler this book is a must. I recommend it to all my students. It does an excellent job of detailing the scent imprinting training, establishing a readable alert and the advancement of training. Not only does it cover the handling and training of the dog but discusses in depth the handlers responsibilities and information useful to any agency wishing to deploy the cadaver dog. Excellent information in a basic readable form. Not much experience in scent work needed prior to implementing these techniques. A wealth of information.

Book Description

In 1992 Italy was convulsed by two brazen Mafia assassinations of high-ranking officials. The latest "excellent cadavers" were Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the Sicilian magistrates who had been the Cosa Nostra's most implacable enemies. Yet in the aftermath of the murders, hundreds of "men of honor" were arrested and the government that ad protected them for nearly half a century was at last driven from office. This is the story that Stille tells with such insight and immediacy in Excellent Cadavers. Combining a profound understanding of his doomed heroes with and unprecedented look into the Mafia's stringent codes and murderous rivalries, he gives us a book that has the power of a great work of history and the suspense of a true thriller.

"Riveting...a well-paced and highly informative account stocked with well-drawn characters."--Philadelphia Inquirer

"Masterful...[Stille] delivers a stiletto-sharp portrait of the bloodthirsty Sicilian mafia."--Business Week

5 out of 5 stars A man who know us well ..........2006-10-11

As an Italian, all I can say is that Mr. Stille knows us very well. In every single case where the book didn't agree with my memory, I was wrong (and, although I have spent the last two decades abroad, I was there when most of the events described happened). It's obvious from the way he writes that he is an insider, he is one of us. At the same time, he can understand us more clearly because he is also NOT one of us.

Not only I couldn't find a single imprecision, I found a mountain of incredible stuff I should have known but didn't (for example that the Salvo brothers legally got 10% of all taxes they collected for our government), likely because our press was careful to avoid stepping on "excellent" toes.

I read "Excellent Cadavers" with a mix of disbelief, shame, rage, and despair, as almost always with Mr. Stille's excellent prose. I cannot but recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and readable.......2006-09-27

The best book about the Sicilian Cosa Nostra still available (in English). It was made into a film, which is also worth viewing. I am still waiting for mr Stille to update this book, to add what happened after 1993. Although the subject is complex, the author is a fluid writer who provides a magnificent picture of Italy at the end of the 20th century. The braveness of the Italian judges and police officers is breathtaking and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal criminals pursued by inspirational men.......2006-02-05

This book is an essential read for those with a general interest in modern day Europe, especially Italy, and most emphatically for Sicilian-Americans...like me. Forget those popularized and sometimes romanticized accounts of the mafia often encountered in the popular media. This book reveals in a clear, detailed and non-emotional but yet spell-binding style the ruthless, murderous and often barbaric ways of the real mafiosi...and the politicians and judges who protected them. The diligence, perseverance and courage of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in pursuing these ruthless criminals, with the certain knowledge of their own subsequent murder, is both chilling and awe-inspiring. One cannot offer too much praise for these men and the many other courageous Sicilians who also were murdered in the their efforts to bring justice to Sicily. The book ends in 1994 with notes of caution and fear as it introduces us to the political rise of Silvio Berlusconi. I look forward with great anticipation to the release of the author Alexender Stille's new book, due in June 2006, "The Sack of Rome...by Silvio Berlusconi".

5 out of 5 stars Amazing History.......2003-05-27

Rarely has a non-fiction book riveted me this much. Excellent Cadavers is a story so amazing that it would seem to be the invention of a European social novelist extraordinaire. Shockingly, every word that journalist and writer Alexander Stille puts to paper is tragically true. It is the story of Italy, a beautiful and legendary part of post-war Western Europe. Home to the Vatican, of the Renaissance, and some of the most extraordinary artisans and writers in all of western history, Italy seemed relatively well suited to succeed after World War II. However, these dreams were quickly snuffed out by an organization that would use any means necessary to protect their vast international criminal empire, which brought in millions upon millions of dollars. This book tells the story of this group of murderous thugs that managed to corrupt an entire country, effectively creating a shadow government, which enabled them to profit from the hard working taxpaying citizens. It is also the story of two men who decided that it had gone far enough, and they, with the help of a precious few band of brave men, would cure the cancer that had afflicted their country and province for the better part of a century.

The group of course was Cosa Nostra, a shadowy group of professional criminals that formed a tightly knit family of crime. Their ranks were highly structured, with bosses, captains, and soldiers. Originating from the violent land of Sicily, La Cosa Nostra quickly took advantage of the turbulent world of Italian politics and the rising worldwide narcotics trade. Their access to narcotics gave them almost limitless wealth, which enabled them to bribe and corrupt whole swaths of the Italian government and the justice system. Judges, prosecutors, police chiefs, ministers, and even governors were not safe from the mafia's reach, as they would kill literally anyone to make sure everyone else followed orders. Soon, mafia wars sprung up, where hundreds upon hundreds of people would be killed. The narcotics fueled group spread to every city in Italy and even into Europe. The mafia was allied with the Gambino and Genovese crime families of New York, the Asian triad gangs, and the Colombian cartels. Their power was limitless, and few dared challenge them. As the 1980's progressed, and thousands were killed, two prosecutors, Giovanni Falcone and Paulo Borsellino, took up the challenge.

Falcone and Borsellino were not just fighting against the mafia, they were fighting against a society where organized crime was a way of life. Many of their superiors did not want to rock the boat and constantly impeded the work of the two prosecutors. At the same time, the two men were under constant death threats, as the mafia sought to kill both them and their entire families. Even with these obstacles, Falcone and Borsellino managed to bring many mafia chieftains and soldiers to trial. Surprisingly, they were initially successful, sending thousands of them to prison. However, the wheels of corruption quickly turned, releasing many of the prisoners and destroying Falcones reputation. At the same time, the infamous boss of bosses, Toto Riina, consolidated the entire Sicilian organization by murdering anyone who stood in his way. Soon, the violence and political changes forced the government to make changes. However, the only real change came when both Falcone and Borsellino were tragically murdered. Then, the people rose up and demanded justice. Soon, most of the government had been thrown out, and thousands of mobsters found themselves in jail for life. It was too late for Falcone and Borsellino, but they triumphed in death.

Stille provides just an amazing amount of knowledge as he deftly narrates an amazing range of crime and politics. It really is a general history of Italy at the time, with many different mentions of Italian society, politics, and economics. The differences between Northern Italy and Southern Italy are explained, as is the maddening bureaucratic nightmare that is European socialism. Millions of taxpayer dollars disappeared into a black hole of corruption and incompetence, and the voters had little power to do anything about it. Stille provides a great history, and one of the best examples of personal bravery I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars excellent cadavers , excellent reading.......2003-03-12

This book is great read. very informitive, If your interrest lies in the American Mafia then this is a great insight into the rest of the family. hard and cold and deadly "men of honor". you get to see them for what they really are. Personal terrorists. The true hero's being Giovanni Falcone, paolo Borsellino and the sicillian people.

Mr Stills makes it all easy to understand and feel the tenison that must swirl in the very air of Sicily. My admiration goes out to those involved in this strugle. and to Alexander Stille for recording it so well.

    Book Description

James "Professor Puff" Henry may as well have "loser" stamped on his forehead. Divorced, overweight, shy, and living at home, he relies on books and his favorite snack-cheese puffs-for sweet relief from his problems. A former English lit profesat William and Mary, he moves back to Quincy's Gap, a small Virginia town in the Shenandoah Valley, to take care of his recently-widowed father. To improve his social life and waistline, he joins a supper club for dieters who lovingly call themthe "Flab Five." Avoiding carbs is nearly impossible in this deep-fried potato-loving land, so a mysterious death in their small burg provides an effective, if disturbing, distraction. While dodging delectable temptations, Professor Henry and his fellow dieters work together to shed pounds and find the killer who has struck fear in this tight-knit community.

4 out of 5 stars Counting Carbs is Murder.......2007-02-05

James Henry's life has brought him many changes in the last few months. Right after his divorce, his mother died and he moved home to care for his dad. He's taken the job of head librarian for the Quincy Gap branch. Of course, since this is such a small Virginia town, the job is much more prestigious then it sounds.

James has had a hard time making friends since he moved back, so that's why he decides to become the fifth member in a local supper club. The entire group could stand to lose weight, so they decided to count carbs together. Dubbing themselves the "Flab Five," they set out to reach their own weight goals.

The club has barely gotten off the ground when the local trouble maker dies in the bakery. Lucy, one of the supper club members, decides this unusual event is the perfect time to prove she can be a real cop instead of just their dispatcher. The victim had made lots of enemies in his short life, so finding suspects is easy. But working together, these five new friends just might find the killer.

This is the first book in a new series that shows plenty of promise. The characters are quirky and charming, and I fell in love with them. The small town setting was equally as enjoyable. The plot was a bit uneven at times, but did proved several nice clues and red herrings before the suspenseful end. The book also includes two low carb recipes to try later.

The "Flab Five" are an entertaining bunch, and I look forward to a chance to meet up with them again soon.

James Henry was perfectly happy in his quiet life as a college professor. but is comes to an end when his mother dies and he must return home to Quincy Gap to take care of his father. He has to leave the job he loves to care for his disagreeable, uncommunicative parent. He is at least able to get a job as librarian in the local library. But is is still not the future he had planned for himself. Even his wife has left him. So to stave off loneliness and to try to lose the weight he has put on, he decides to join the newly formed dieters' supper club. There he meets people who have the same goal as he- make friends while losing weight. He is especially interested in an employee of the sheriff's department, Lucy Hanover.

But the dieters' focus changes when an obnoxious local man is found dead at the bakery. The Supper Club members are drawn into the mystery and quickly find themselves awash in contradictory clues. Lucy has ambitions of becoming a deputy and this may be her lucky break. If she can help solve the murder the chauvinistic sheriff may be forced to take her seriously. James is pleased to help her, both to catch the killer and to spend more time with Lucy. The Supper Club members band together to figure out who killed the football star in the first murder to occur in Quincy Gap since 1913. Among trying to ignore their hungry pains, food cravings and the yearly Halloween parade, the struggling dieters have a lot on their plates.

This book is the first in the planned of Supper Club Mysteries. It is a fun addition to the market of food based cozies with endearing characters that will bring readers back for second helpings. The small town setting of Quincy Gap is also able to provide the ambiance and potential for further development. So many of us can relate to the frustration of dieting and will be looking forward to cheering along the efforts of The Supper Club.

J.B. Stanley is also the author of the Antique and Collectible Mysteries.

James Henry is a former English Lit professor. He has come back home to Quincy's Gap, Virginia, to take care of his father after his mother's death and his divorce. His father isn't a very nice person. James was lucky to get a job as the local librarian, and now he has no social life. He just hides among the books at work and eats cheese puffs.

When he hears about the supper club, he figures he can stand to lose fifty pounds and he might make some friends. He jumps at the chance to join. He meets Lucy Hanover who works in the sheriff's department and is attractive. She'd like to be a deputy someday. He also meets Lindy, Gillian, and Bennett. They decide to call themselves the "Flab Five." Each of them needs to lose weight, but they all seem to have dreams and aspiration. I think that's what made me like them so much.

James and his fellow dieters end up in the middle of a murder investigation when someone mysteriously drops dead in the Sweet Tooth Bakery. Soon James finds himself looking forward to the next meeting of the supper club. But can they stick to their diets and find the killer without putting themselves in danger? And what is James' father doing in the shed all the time?

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in two days. The characters are so much fun. You might think that a mystery set around dieting would be boring. Not in this case. You will laugh out loud at their antics. The supper club is such a fun idea. I just wanted to keep reading. Can't wait until the next one is out! I highly recommend this book. I hope she writes fast!

    5 out of 5 stars Loved Carbs & Cadavers!.......2006-10-24

Carbs & Cadavers was a nice, easy and entertaining read. I recommend it strongly.

You can love a Clancy, Ludlum or other book but never identify with the hero and their special world saving talent. But Carbs & Cadavers offers numerous characters to identify with in one way or another or possibly recognize a friend or two. The 5 members of the Flab Five share the all too common desire to shed some extra weight, but each has a special food crutch like cheese puffs, frosting, or doughnuts.

What you may not identify with is murder in a small town. But if you believe that the Flab Five can help solve a murder, then you'd be right. The story easily flows and soon you've read the whole enjoyable thing. Just like a good cookie...or two.
