Book Description

In Vegan with a Vengeance, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, cohost of the vegan cooking show, The Post Punk Kitchen, brings the do-it-yourself, community-driven ethos of punk rock into the kitchen. ...and still learning! this book is great. wonderful recipes, well written, friendly & familiar style. the absolute best veg burgers there are, my kids can't get enough of them. if i had just one small issue, it would be with the amount of salt in some of the recipes, such as the home made seitan recipe...just too much sodium...now i cut out most of it with satisfiying results. i highly recommend this cookbook, i am very glad to have it in my cookbook library.

5 out of 5 stars So good!.......2007-06-27

This is my favorite vegan cook book. All the recipes are easy and interesting. Everything I've made has been a success and the recipes are easily modified. I especially like that Isa Chandra has tips for keeping vegan cooking costs down.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!.......2007-06-24

Yummy stuff! This is one of my favorite vegan cookbooks. She really knows how to make great vegan baked goods! Worth buying just for the cookies, cakes, and muffins. The "Lemon-Poppy Seed Muffins" and "Mocha Chip Muffins" are a few favorites. The "Big Gigantoid Crunchy Peanut Butter-Oatmeal Cookies" are beyond yummy. I can't resist eating them in the morning with coffee or tea.

I tinkered with vegan corn muffin recipes for years and never found anything as good as her "Sunny Blueberry corn muffins". I make a variation without the blueberries to go with chili and it's fantastic.

"Tempeh Reubens" served with "Baked Cajun French Fries" makes a fun lunch or dinner that makes me feel less like I'm missing out by not having a vegan restaurant nearby.

"Spanakopita" and "Italian Baked Tofu" are two recipes that I use often.

For vegan recipes they are easy to make and don't require ingredients that I can't find in my small town.

Okay I'm hungry, now. I have to go eat.

If you want to save the world from global warming, then keep this product away from me. Did you know that far.... errr, "gas" creates way more "greenhouse gases" than most anything else? This means that vegan cows are far.... , err, pooting our planet to a warm, stormy death. The heroic Dipper is warning you all who want to save this lovely blue ball called Earth from turning into gassy Venus to reconsider your vegan ways. Yeah, YOU!!! All that green fiber you are woofing down everyday creates "tummy turbulence" which makes you, admit it, toot like a goat. And you thought no one noticed. This fine intentioned book is quite impressive. Many of the recipes are quite tasty even if they have no yummy animal protein in them. Dipper even laughed a few times at the author's funny comments, particularly the "punk points" which made me pull out my old record player and a vinyl copy of The Dead Kennedy's "Holiday in Cambodia". The "Fizzy the Cat" parts were rather weird; I think that cat was actually full of gas and craving a tasty tuna and chicken sandwich. Most amusing were her shallow little political yippings (furballs?) about Republicans. I think she secretly wants to slay them and make people fritters. Freud would have plenty to say about that. Dipper, your tubby knight in shining armor (lots of Brasso) would like you to know he is busy doing his planet preserving best at preventing global warming by single handedly finishing off as many of those gassy cows off as he can by using the best recipes in this book with plenty of yummy, tasty, wonderful, beef mixed in to ADD SOME FLAVOR!!! You would be astounded at how these recipes taste when you add in some delightful animal protein! And best yet, you can help save the planet by cutting down on bovine butt burpers and your own toxic hiney honkers! Well done Mighty Isa! Together, the Earth will have a chillier and tastier future! DOWN WITH THE COWS!!!!

This book is well written. I do not enjoy reviews that give too much of the storyline away, suffice I should say this book does not let me down from the previous Lieutenant Eve Dallas series. However, it will stand-alone, you do not have to read any other book in this series to know what is going on with it. I would not spoil it for you if I were to tell you that the murders start off extremely grisly and get very personal to the investigator. You gotta' love this book because, Lt. Eve will not stop until the killer is found. The suspense kept me going till the end.

When a mad man decides to punish Roarke for the sins of his youth, Eve becomes a pawn in a game of cat and mouse...but is Eve the pawn or is Roarke? To answer that question, Eve must hunt down a criminal as merciless as the devil himself.... Vengeance is the game. Death is the solution.

Book Description

Vengeance is a true story that reads like a novel. It is the account of five ordinary Israelis, selected to vanish into "the cold" of espionage secrecy -- their mission to hunt down and kill the PLO terrorists responsible for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972.

This is the account of that secret mission, as related by the leader of the group -- the first Mossad agent to come out of "deep cover" and tell the story of a heroic endeavor that was shrouded in silence and speculation for years. He reveals the long and dangerous operation whose success was bought at a terrible cost to the idealistic volunteer agents themselves.

"Avner" was the leader of that team, handpicked by Golda Meir to avenge the monstrous crime of Munich. He and his young companions, cut off from any direct contact with Israel, set out systematically to find and kill the central figures of the PLO's Munich operation, tracking them down wherever they lived.

The mechanics, the horror, the day-by-day suspense of what they did surpass by far anything John le Carré or Robert Ludlum could imagine, as they themselves were tracked in turn (and some killed) by PLO assassins, changing identities constantly, moving from country to country, devoting their young lives to the brutal task of vengeance.

Vengeance is a profoundly human document, a real-life espionage classic that plunges the reader into the shadow world of terrorism and political murder. But it goes far beyond that, to explore firsthand the feelings of disgust and doubt that gradually came to torment each member of the Israeli team, and that in the end inexorably changed their view of the mission -- and themselves.

Vengeance opens a window onto a secret world, a book that at the same time inspires and horrifies. For its subject is an act of revenge that goes to the very heart of the ancient biblical questions of good and evil.

5 out of 5 stars Spies? Terrorists? Assassinations? The Middle East? A True Story? Yes!.......2007-06-18

The Jewish state of Israel has always had an aura of intrigue because of the reputation of the Mossad. This is a true story of a group of spies who were on a mission too difficult and high profile for the Mossad. This book is an excellent story in itself, but the fact that it is a true story makes it even more fascinating. Quite a bit of history on terrorism against Israel is given. Personally, I was ashamedly ignorant of the persecution that Israel suffered in the 60's and 70's through terrorism. This book brought to light the terror that was leveled against Israel. Jonas does an excellent job of writing, in a humble way that is uncharacteristic of many authors. The very nature of his writing lends credibility to his story. The afterward by the author is an exciting supplement to the book, giving the author's rebuttal to those who question the validity of the book. I loved the way the book unfolded, cold and slow in the beginning but slowly picking up speed and never slowing down until the last page. I look forward to seeing Stephen Spielberg's movie based on the book as Spielberg has shown in the past that he can successfully make good films that stay true to the books that they are based upon.

A reoccurring theme throughout the book is the morality behind terrorism and counter terrorism. At what point does the defender become the aggressor? America has faced this problem as well in the past few years trying to define the fine line between defense and cold-blooded war. Is counter terrorism justified? Was Israel's decision to assassinate top terrorist leaders warranted, or did these actions put the Israelis on ethical par with the murderous terrorists? The book clearly shows how the decisions of war are difficult, and there is often no straightforward moral line in such choices. There will always be dispute and debate between Moses' law of eye for an eye and Jesus' law of turning the other cheek. While both of these laws seem to be incompatible with each other, it will do humanity well to find how these two laws full of wisdom come together in some sort of compromise.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I"ve ever read.......2007-05-21

I don't dole out 5 stars to books easily. But this one definitly earned it. If you've seen Munich, you know what the book is about, though the movie did deviate from the book in some ways, it was mostly the same.

It was a captivating book, and in the end, it trancended your typical "spy novel" thriller, in that it brought up deep questions regarding our notions of patriotism, militant service to country, and the way nations use their patriotic heros like disposable pawns.

5 out of 5 stars bravo for a well written page turner - I loved reading this book........2007-05-02

This is the type of book that you will only put down if sleep is absolutely necessary, and you are able to "dine in moderation" knowing that tomorrow you will get to enjoy more satisfying reading. The reader feels as if he is in the mind of the protagonist, very rarely do I find this in an 'as told to' format. Next stop of course will be the movie rental. I found this in an airport bookstore and truth be told I wouldn't have minded if the plane was delayed for hours, but as a matter of fact the plane was on time, however, the book was finished before the return trip.

5 out of 5 stars It's really a 7 star book..........2007-04-03

Plain and simply, whether fiction or fact, this book is a page turner. You can't put it down, and if you do, you can't wait to get back to it.
What a great story and writer! It is the best book I have read in a long time.
Read it, then rent the movie "Munich" after it.

5 out of 5 stars A literate author.......2007-03-08

Skillfully written, carefully researched, and unafraid to capture feeling - a reflexion of the protagonist's sixth sense - rather than argue the validity evidence. A valuable insight into a secret world.

Book Description

The original superstar team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness return for one of the most talked about storylines of the year.

The fourth volume of the enormously popular SUPERMAN/BATMAN series finds our heroes confronting a new challenge: The Maximums, a group of super-heroes closely tied to the U.S. Government. Someone has killed one of their team, and the Maximums are on the hunt for the murderer. The trouble is, there are two names on the top of their list: Superman and Batman!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Don't skip it..........2007-05-16

I'm not quite sure why so many people have a problem with this story. Sure it's crazy, but considering the main "villains" involved, it should be nothing else. I don't think a lot of people really "get" this story, which is so crazy...it works.

There's a ton of characters involved, and some twists to old favorites. I loved The Maximums as an Avengers parody, great stuff there. Bizzaro and Batzarro are great as unlikely heroes, although after awhile it can be a chore reading their text. It was cool to see Loeb handle them just as he does Supes and Bats though.

Overall this is a fun read, if you take it too seriously, you'll end up jaded like the other people who've written reviews on it. It looks very likely that Loeb and McGuinness just wanted to have a good time with their last S/B arc. It's nice to have some comics left these days that don't take themselves so seriously. It's also worth noting that this arc again builds on the relationship between Superman and Batman, which Loeb is great at. I recommend it, don't listen to the hate.

2 out of 5 stars Jeph Loeb's swan song, thankfully.......2007-05-01

Up until this storyarc, I pretty much enjoyed Jeph Loeb's run on the high selling Superman/Batman series, but sadly, Loeb's final arc on the title is just loaded with plot holes and hard to understand. Vengeance finds a group called the Maximums hunting down Superman and Batman because they believe the two iconic heroes murdered one of their own. Naturally, this is not the case, and soon enough Bizarro is on the scene, along with "Batzarro" (I kid you not), the Joker, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. What happens next in Vengeance is incredibly hard to follow as Loeb appears to shift things into high gear, but things never take off. His renditions of Supes and Bats are more wooden here than ever before, and the story inconsistencies and additional appearances out of nowhere just boggle the mind. Ed McGuinness, who teamed with Loeb when Superman/Batman launched, returns to lend his pencil work with Dexter Vines on inks, may be too cartoony for some, but it's undoubtedly the highlight of this TPB. This ended up being Loeb's last arc on the title before taking work once again with Marvel, so hopefully the otherwise talented and celebrated writer has had his batteries recharged.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Storyline.......2007-02-26

I loved the first two arcs of the Superman/Batman series - they were superb. The first of those, "Public Enemies", was made by the same team that created this, but its hard to believe by reading it. Loeb weaves a ridiculous plot that doesn't really do anything except introduce a variety of characters into an absurd storyline. The only redeeming feature of this whole thing is the artwork by McGuiness, which was excellent as usual. But it doesn't make it worth wasting time with this silly piece.

4 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2006-11-08

Great addition to the series. I wasnt too crazy about the story, but the number of different characters more than made up for it.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Personified.......2006-11-06

This was one of the most bizarre graphic novels I have ever examined. 1) it jumps around a lot, 2) the characters mainly the Bizarro ones are just nuts, and 3) they make multiple references to past events. But still the art is cool, the story is crazy, and some of my favorite characters appear (Darksied, The Joker, and Bizarro). So despite or maybe because of these I have to recommend this to any Superman or Batman fan.

As usual, Jean Sasson opened my eyes to a harsh culture where survival is your minute by minute goal. She has provided women with a voice and others of us a reason to be thankful to be Americans.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2007-05-12

I love all of Jean Sasson's books. Like all the others, this is written to keep you interested in the story and wondering what could possibly happen next to this poor young woman, her husband and all Kurds, even though you eventually know about the general outcome. The fact that the story is true, makes it hair raising. The only unfavorable thing I could say about the book, is that in telling the story, Jean Sasson looses herself a bit by going into too many details of places, people, every day occurrances, and the constant back and forth conversations between the protagonists. Sometimes it is best to leave details to your imagination. Other than that, I enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait for the next!

Gary Jonathan Bass, of Princeton University, offers a vigorous, liberal endorsement of war-crimes trials at a time when they're coming under close scrutiny in the aftermath of Bosnia, Kosovo, and Rwanda. This book--Bass's first--takes its title from U.S. prosecutor Robert Jackson's opening statement at the Nuremberg trials, following World War II: "That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury, stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason." Nuremberg is, of course, widely regarded as a glowing success; other war-crimes tribunals fall far short of its mark. A strength of this book is Bass's willingness to deal with these realities. His defense of war-crimes trials doesn't rest on head-in-the-sky notions about international justice. He argues, simply, that they're in the interest of democratic, peace-loving nations: "It is not that these complicated and often muddled trials are too noble to question; it is that the other options could be worse."

For an advocate, Bass is refreshingly honest: "Do war crimes tribunals work? The only serious answer is: compared to what? No, war crimes trials do not work particularly well. But they have clear potential to work, and to work much better than anything else diplomats have come up with at the end of a war." Apathy and vengeance, which Bass considers the two alternatives to tribunals, are both worth avoiding, he says. The bulk of Stay the Hand of Vengeance focuses on how nations dealt with war crimes following the Napoleonic era, World War I, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the crumbling of Yugoslavia, and several other episodes. Bass, who was a journalist before becoming an academic, writes with great clarity and knows how to combine anecdote with argument to make his point. For those interested in the international prosecution of war crimes from both historical and contemporary perspectives, this is required reading. --John J. Miller

Book Description

International justice has become a crucial part of the ongoing political debates about the future of shattered societies like Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Cambodia, and Chile. Why do our governments sometimes display such striking idealism in the face of war crimes and atrocities abroad, and at other times cynically abandon the pursuit of international justice altogether? Why today does justice seem so slow to come for war crimes victims in the Balkans? In this book, Gary Bass offers an unprecedented look at the politics behind international war crimes tribunals, combining analysis with investigative reporting and a broad historical perspective. The Nuremberg trials powerfully demonstrated how effective war crimes tribunals can be. But there have been many other important tribunals that have not been as successful, and which have been largely left out of today's debates about international justice. This timely book brings them in, using primary documents to examine the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, the Armenian genocide, World War II, and the recent wars in the former Yugoslavia.

Bass explains that bringing war criminals to justice can be a military ordeal, a source of endless legal frustration, as well as a diplomatic nightmare. The book takes readers behind the scenes to see vividly how leaders like David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton have wrestled with these agonizing moral dilemmas. The book asks how law and international politics interact, and how power can be made to serve the cause of justice.

Bass brings new archival research to bear on such events as the prosecution of the Armenian genocide, presenting surprising episodes that add to the historical record. His sections on the former Yugoslavia tell--with important new discoveries--the secret story of the politicking behind the prosecution of war crimes in Bosnia, drawing on interviews with senior White House officials, key diplomats, and chief prosecutors at the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Bass concludes that despite the obstacles, legalistic justice for war criminals is nonetheless worth pursuing. His arguments will interest anyone concerned about human rights and the pursuit of idealism in international politics.

5 out of 5 stars well written, fascinating.......2001-01-26

This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted and very well written. It culminates in a balanced account of the development of the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and exposes the role of Western nations in supporting- and in some cases, obstructing the tribunal's work. Bass' thesis is that Western nations value human rights and the rule of law,- but not more than the lives of their own soldiers - thus accounting for the sporadic Western support for War Crimes tribunals. This is provocative book which has many insights into the complexities of international organizations, human rights, and diplomacy.

Gary Jonathan Bass's book is a riveting, thoughtful read into what has been a long-neglected chapter of history. Piecing it all together wasn't easy. Mr. Bass takes sound scholarship, adds good reporting, and weaves a tale that I, frankly, could not put down. Read it. You won't regret it.

If you care even a little bit about international justice, you have to read this groundbreaking book. The research is incredibly painstaking--there's unbelievable stuff about the war crimes tribunal after the Napoleonic Wars, and a riveting reconstruction of the failed tribunal after the Armenian genocide. But there's also great journalism about the search for justice in the Balkans. It looks like international tribunals are going to be the next big thing; this is the definitive history, and the definitive analysis.

"Former SEAL Team Six leader and American hero Richard Marcinko is back in action with a thriller ripped from tomorrow's headlines. Mixing fact with fiction, Marcinko returns to his authentic, no-holds-barred style in the latest explosive installment of his New York Times bestselling series, Rogue Warrior(R): Vengeance. Armed with irreverent wit and a fully loaded submachine gun, Marcinko's fictional alter ego takes no prisoners as he and his Red Cell II team tackle fat-cat American bureaucrats as well as terrorists. Interspersing action with his classic combination of wisecracks and earthy humor, Marcinko crams a chemical explosion, a high-speed helicopter chase, a train hijacking, and a headless corpse into the first few pages. When it becomes clear that terrorists are gunning for Demo Dick as well as the country's most precious symbols and institutions, things become very personal. Forget the Rogue Warrior's usual terms of endearment -- this time he's out for blood. Launched on an all-out international hunt, Demo Dick discovers a plot targeting the country's largest shipping port for liquefied petroleum gas...but that's just a prelude for Independence Day. Of all the thriller writers out there today, only one has truly walked the walk and talked the talk. Marcinko infuses his new book with stories and details that could come only from the inside -- which makes them all the more alarming. Reserve the edge of your seat for this one.... "

1 out of 5 stars What happened to the Rogue Warrior?.......2007-06-25

I am a fan of most action genres and the early Marcinko stuff was great. This book, however, was so bad I couldn't even finish it. The characters were weak, the story poorly developed, and there was no evidence of any kind of research being done in this book. I live in Vegas and was dissapointed that Marcinko didn't even bother to verify glaring and rediculous errors that could have been verified on-line (even though a little on-site investigation would be better). It may be that this story line is just played out and should be put to rest.

Marcinko is at it again with a fact/fiction return of life and conflict. Im a specialist of military tribute and i am again satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars check out from the library - don't buy.......2007-01-02

When Demo Dick first wrote Rogue Warrior, it was good because the first person format was about "his story" (with the characteristic Marcinko lingo). This is latest novel is a sad departure from the DevGru Guru we were entertained by...and some of us worked with.

It takes more than a ghost writer to make a good story. Yes DHS is lame. Yes, a trained chimp could out perform DHS in almost any scenario you could devise. We all know that, and the public endures the mediocrity because no individual knows how to professionalize the machine (witness, Mr. M, how your Red Cell ops embarassed the Navy - pissing off admirals without getting that much to change).

Potential readers -- don't waste your time and money to be disappointed by this story.

Dick -- (with respect, sir) go back to your roots and tell "your story" because it's better than all the make believe and yes, I realize it is more work for you to put it together. Instead of collaborating with a ghost writer, collaborate with Larry Simmons and some of the old Mustangs, or Master Chiefs like Gary Gallagher who can tell the "real story" of how things work(ed). It's not as much published glory for you personally but the end result could be fantastic and a potential "classic" in the way Rogue Warrior was.

4 out of 5 stars The Rogue Warrior doesn't disappoint........2006-11-07

Yet another action filled book by Richard Marcinko. If you have only read one or all of the Rogue Warrior serious of books you won't be disappointed by this one, the Red Cell team are there to follow Demo Dick in making life hard for anyone who gets in his way.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2006-07-12

Following the series our pleasantly plump former SEAL "collaborated" on with John Weisman, these latest forays into the fiction world are best left alone. Characters are weak, as is the dialgue, and the plot is virtually nonexistant. His new collaboration with DeFelice just does not have the same pizzaz!

Book Description

Award-winning author Elizabeth George gives us an early glimpse into the lives of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James, and Lady Helen Clyde in a superlative mystery that is also a fascinating inquiry into the crimes of the heart. Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton, has brought to Howenstow, his family home, the young woman he has asked to be his bride. But the savage murder of a local journalist is the catalyst for a lethal series of events that shatters the calm of a picturesque Cornwall village and embroils Lynley and St. James in a case far outside their jurisdiction—and a little too close to home. When a second death follows closely on the heels of the first, Lynley finds he can't help taking the investigation personally—because the evidence points to a killer within his own family.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible book - full of melodrama - completely unrealistic.......2007-03-09

I enjoyed reading the first three books in this series. Each was an improvement on the previous one. But this book is awful. The fact that this book is a prequel to the series does not affect my review. But the writing is just terrible. The characters make the most outlandish and hyperbolic statements. No one talks like these characters! Their behavior is often at odds with their characters. Written in the style of a harlequin romance; there is absolutely nothing subtle about emotions or reactions. I think that the book was plotted in advance and the characters were written to meet the requirements of the plot. Never mind that none of the characters behave in a realistic manner. Never mind that the characters are only caricatures. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2006-08-03

In A SUITABLE VENGEANCE by Elizabeth George, the author explores the back-story between Inspector Lynley, St. James, Deborah and Lady Helen. During a rare weekend visit to his estate in Cornwall to celebrate his engagement to Deborah Cotter, Lynley becomes involved in the vicious murder of the local newspaper publisher. During the course of solving the crime, Ms. George delves into the history of St. James' accident, the relationship between St. James, Lynley, Deborah and Lady Helen, and the reason for the estrangement between Lynley and his mother and brother. While Ms. George always makes sure that her mysteries are solved, she does not always have happy resolutions for her characters. Reading this book only makes some of the later books in the series more poignant as it deepens the reader's understanding of all the characters. This is a fine book that will definitely touch your heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner.......2006-08-03

After reading WITH NO ONE AS WITNESS, I had to go back and re-read A SUITABLE VENGEANCE by Elizabeth George so I could refresh my memory of the intertwining relationships between Inspector Lynley, Lady Helen, St. James and Deborah. This is a beautifully rendered novel as Ms. George explores the painful history of the four main characters' relationships-- and Lynley's unhappy family relationships.

The mystery is suitably intriguing as Lynley battles against the fear that one of his relatives may be involved in a brutal crime. It is also fun to go back and see the early days of Barbara Havers and Lynley, before they became partners.

This remains one of my favorites of Elizabeth George's books, one that I will probably read several more times.

5 out of 5 stars Want to know the whole story behind Lynley, Helen, Deborah, and Simon?.......2006-03-29

Then this is definitely the book for you.

This time a murder mystery gets really personal for Lynley.
We finally learn the entire story behind Lynley's relationships with his friends and family. And its all wrapped up in a complex and gripping story set in his native Cornwall.

4 out of 5 stars For Elizabeth George fans a great early introduction to the characters.......2005-09-12

I discovered Elizabeth George recently, and had not read the early books. This one gives wonderful information about Linley, St James, Deborah and Helen which would have enriched the reading of the later books. I started all of this backwards, but it really doesn't matter. This one is more about the main characters, with a couple of murders thown in. What can I say? Once a fan of Elizabeth George, always a fan. I highly recommend this to any fan of hers.

2 out of 5 stars Poor lead-in to DC's 'Infinite Crisis'.......2007-05-27

As a lead-up to DC's 'Infinite Crisis', this has been a disappointment to me story-wise. And when viewed on it's own, the story is even more disappointing. Only interesting for hard-core DC Universe fans, I guess.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but confusing.......2007-04-03

One of the lead-in mini series' to DC's Infinite Crisis mega event, Day of Vengeance finds a few of DC's older icons in some sticky situations. What happens when the Spectre, the Spirit of Vengeance in the DC universe, is seduced into destroying all the magic forces he can get his hands on? Nothing good, that's what! Since Hal Jordan came back from the dead and is a Green Lantern once again, the Spectre has been left without a human host, which leaves him vulnerable to attack from Eclipso. Soon after that, the wizard Shazam meets his demise, leading Captain Marvel and a host of other magically powered characters including Detective Chimp and the Phantom Stranger, to unite in an effort to take down the Spectre. The story is written by Fables creator Bill Willingham, and features some great dialogue as well as art, but the overall story is confusing. Not to mention that believing a being whose sole purpose is the punishment of the guilty getting so easily tricked into being an evil pawn? I don't think so. There's also a lead-in story from Judd Winick, which in itself isn't anything real special, although that shouldn't be much of a surprise. All in all, Day of Vengeance isn't the best of the Infinite Crisis tie-in's, but it's definitely not the worst (Rann/Thanagar War anyone?).

2 out of 5 stars Logic would help.......2006-09-24

I read this because it was a Prelude to Infinite Crisis, but the story defies logic. The Spectre is known in the DC Universe as the spirit of Vengeance. He is all-powerful, and can see into your soul and view the evil person you are. So it defies logic that he decides to destroy all magic because Eclipso (the very definition of evil) tells him to.

In truth, I never really understood why Eclipso wanted to destroy magic...other than to create chaos. I enjoyed reading about some of the lesser characters in the DC magical universe, and for me that includes the wizard Shazam and Captain Marvel. But the book is light on understanding those characters, and the ending definitely leaves you with little understanding as to what has just ocurred.

I have not yet read Infinite Crisis, so maybe in retrospect it will make more sense. Unfortunately, I doubt it.

3 out of 5 stars Not well-plotted overall, though certain scenes are effective by themselves........2006-02-13

"Day of Vengeance" sounded like a great idea going in. Willingham is one of the underrated creators in comics, and throw in a legend like Walt Simonson as cover artist, and there's enough to interest any longtime comics fan.

Unfortunately, the execution fell short of what it could have been. The story read like a "house without a foundation". Certain scenes and characters were well handled (this story breathed new life into Detective Chimp for the first time since he guested in Flash/GL in the mid-nineties). However, the overall story lacked direction. It all just seemed disjointed.

One big part of the problem was that "Day of Vengeance" was not a stand-alone story. It's part of the larger "Infinite Crisis". Unfortunately, there is every expectation of an actual resolution. After all, any story collected a TPB deserves at least some kind of independent conclusion, even if it is part of a larger whole. Don't you think?

Grade: Incomplete, because this is unfortunately not a whole story.

Recommendation: Get it if you are an Infinite Crisis completist. If you are a casual Infinite Crisis reader, you can probably pass if you want to save money. If you have no idea what Infinite Crisis is, then don't even bother.

5 out of 5 stars Better than alot of people are saying.......2006-01-20

I actually really liked DoV. True, the story line itself wasn't particularly award-winning, but the book itself was fun and entertaining. Plus, it has just enough of a dark feel that you can anticipate the "coming CRISIS". I thought it was refreshing to see a number of very minor characters (Chimp, Catman, Nightmaster, OMAC, etc.) being reintroduced in the Crisis storylines. Bonus points for Shazam's much larger role also.

P.S. I have a new favorite hero...Detectice Chimp! (can't believe I'm saying that)

Book Description

It is early February, 1799, a year of war.

Sailing in the Caribbean, Captain Alan Lewrie, RN, is once again pursuing a chimera.
A rich French prize ship he’d left at anchor at Dominica has gone missing, along with six of his sailors. What starts as a straightforward search for it, and them, from Hispaniola to Barbados, far down the Antilles, leads Lewrie to a gruesome discovery on the Dry Tortugas and to a vile cabal of the most pitiless and depraved pirates ever to sail under the “Jolly Roger” . . . and the suspicion that one of his trusted hands just may be the worst of them all!
Against his will---again---the usually irrepressible Lewrie is made his superiors’ “cat’s-paw” once more, and his covert mission this time is to go up the Mississippi in enemy-held Spanish Louisiana to the romantic but sordid port of New Orleans in search of pirates and prize, where one false step could betray Lewrie and his small party as spies. Beguilements, betrayal, and death lurk ’round every corner of the Vieux Carré, and it’s up to Lewrie’s quick but cynical to win the day wits for their survival and wreak a very personal vengeance on his foes!

I have read the entire series and was very disappointed with this one. If you like the series, one must read it but it's not one that I would relish keeping on my shelf. I'd recommend reading a library copy.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to read.......2006-11-10

Lambdin has good ideas and plotting but he writes in such turgid prose, I had trouble getting through the novel.

I wish Mr. Lambdin would can the dialect. I'm sure he is transcribing an accurate version of an Irish brogue or a pirates patois, but have some pity on the poor reader.

Dialect is good in a film or play perhaps, but not in an adventure novel. After going through this latest Alan Lewrie adventure, I have a new appreciation for Patrick O'Brian's elegant prose.

I have read the previous eleven installments of the Alan Lewrie saga. The time has come to bring the series to a close or discipline the writing.

2 out of 5 stars The Captain's Vengeance - A Slow Read.......2006-07-10

I should start by saying I'm a fan of this series, however I've found this novel to be the least entertaining that I've read in this story line. If you have found that you are enjoying the series, and you want to continue the saga, then this is a must read. If however you are sampling one of the books to see how you like the Lewrie novels... don't start here.

Will his father marry the young French Vicomtesse or may Allan even be elevated to the nobility for some heroic deed yet to be performed?
Hey Mr. Lambdin, don't keep us in suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Great read - Dewey Lambdin always pleases.......2006-02-19

I love the Alan Lewrie series. I would say it has been as much fun and in the same tradition as the Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey books and ALexander Kent's Richard Bilitho. These books are a bit spicier but no less well written.
