Book Description
Kristen Heitzmann's characters leap from the page with a balance of strength and fragility as they face anguish from the past. Jill and Morgan, once high school sweethearts, had loved and lost--each other and the baby whom Jill gave up at birth. Years later, Morgan is outwardly successful, but he is still haunted by the memory of the tiny child. And then Jill shows up again in his life with very disturbing news. With her trademark dramatic storytelling, Heitzmann takes readers on an unforgettable journey with two wounded souls as they struggle toward healing and restoration.
Customer Reviews:
Fav Heitzmann book so far!.......2007-04-23
I so enjoyed reading Rush of Wings and couldn't wait to read it's sequel. I found it helpful that I already knew the characters and had a bit of background. I enjoyed The Still of Night even more. I loved the characters created in Jill and Morgan. Their story came vividly alive through the writing. I couldn't help but feel with them. However, I too would have liked a little more developement of the happy ending. The whole book was devoted to their struggles and heartache and it would have been nice to have a little more resolution played out in the book. The Epilogue was sweet thought! Might we catch another glimpse of these characters in a future book? I would be excited about that!
Great Reading.......2007-02-08
I just finished this book and was a great sequel to Rush of Wings. I liked Morgan's character in the first book (though brother Rick was better for Noelle's character than Morgan). He was just such a likable character even with his demons which he works through in "The Still of Night". I was a little disappointed that Morgan never really got to see or talk to his daughter except on the phone once but guess that made a different slant on the story. I also was a little disappointed that the romance doesn't get off the ground until almost the last page. I would have liked to have seen the last chapter explore that a little further although the epilogue covers the birth of their baby girl-okay what did they name her and also how did their marriage affect other secondary characters in the book-did she continue to teach? okay guess that leaves our imaginations or maybe another sequel is in order. This one picked up enough of Rick and Noelle's life (from A Rush of Wings)to know what was happening with them without dwelling on them too much. I enjoyed Rick's story and now Morgan's but almost the whole book is dwelling on Morgan's problems so would be nice to have a couple chapters of his life at peace. Some reviewers thought there was not enough spiritual emphasis in the 2 books especially the first one but for me it was a nice change from some of the Christian Novels I have read. The author puts enough in to know where our strength is and with God's indwelling the characters work through problems and can have peace. All in all a good book and my favorite so far of Kristen Heitzmann. You will definitely enjoy this book much more if you have read "A Rush of Wings" first.
Makes you think!.......2006-01-30
This is a great book and very moving. It really makes you think and consider your choices. I love how it portrays the problems that men face over abortion, as well as women. I think that is very important and a book everyone should read!
The Still of Night.......2005-09-30
It was a pleasure to read this book and the one preceding -
to see how the characters intertwined. She brought you into the story in such a way that you felt each emotion. It was good to read a story where the characters struggled with life issues as well as their relationship with God. I am delighted to have found Kristen Heitzmann. This is the first time I have read any of her books and I look forward to more!
Another great book from Kristen Heitzmann!!!.......2005-09-01
I just finished this book and I will definetely be reading more from Kristen Heitzmann! The story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. If you read "A Rush of Wings" also by Heitzmann, than you will already know Morgan Spencer, if you haven't you can still dive into this book. Jill Runyan and Morgan Spencer, highschool sweethearts, were torn apart by an accidental pregnancy and lies. They are reunited at their 15th highschool reunion.
Jill has just discovered that her daughter, Kelsey, who she gave up at birth, has leukemia. Kelsey needs a bone marrow transplant so her adoptive parents contact Jill as a donor. Struggling through the hearbreak and agony of not being a match for her daughter, Jill must now locate Morgan and tell him that he was lied to, that his child was not aborted, but she exists and needs his bone marrow in order to live.
Morgan was told when he was 18 that Jill, the love of his life, aborted their baby. He has lived with that belief for the past fifteen years. Today he is a very sucessful millionaire who has turned his back on God, and turns to alcohol way too often. Receiving the news that his daughter was not thrown away, but that she is in desperate need of his bone marrow, he hastens to under go surgery for the transplant.
The story explores love, forgiveness, prayer, and many other issues. You will no be disappointed after you read this book. It will make you want to go and read all of Kristen Heitzmann's books. Like I said earlier, you can read "A Rush of Wings" before you read this one is you want a better understanding of the characters. But you don't have to in order to enjoy this story.

Book Description
Lily Brewster and her brother Robert have all the appearances of being filthy rich, even though the family fortune went out the window with the crash of 1929. But thanks to great-uncle Horatio, who left them Grace and Favor Cottage, a huge mansion on the Hudson not far from Franklin Roosevelt's Hyde Park, the Brewsters live in the style to which they had become accustomed--with a few troublesome limitations.
To make sure Lily and Robert didn't go back to being society bums, crafty old Horatio attached some strings to his bequest--and a penny-pinching attorney to manage the funds. Now the poor Brewsters have to actually work for money to survive, and Lily comes up with a brilliant scheme. They can turn a profit while they hobnob with their society friends, luring them to Grace and Favor for a paying weekend with the promise of big-name celebrities as guests.
If Sinclair Lewis hadn't been working on a new book, he might have joined the party; if Amelia Earhart hadn't been busy planning her cross-Atlantic flight, history might not have its own unsolved mystery. And if the Brewsters' celebrity/society bash hadn't been short on luminaries and long on snide barbs and open hostility among the guests, the glittering, glamorous affair might not have turned into a whodunit with one guest dead, one missing, and Lily and Robert chasing a murderer who is ready to strike again.
Customer Reviews:
Death is an Uninvited Guest at Grace and Favor Cottage.......2006-07-30
As the Great Depression drags into 1933, siblings Robert and Lily Brewster are looking for ways to make money in their new home of Voorburg-on-Hudson. Robert and Lily decide to use the mansion they inherited from their Great Uncle Horatio to host a paying weekend where their society friends (who still have plenty of money) can mingle with celebrity writer Julian West. The glamorous weekend gets off to a bumpy start, though, when there are veiled hostilities between some of the guests. The party weekend is spoiled when Lorna Ethridge, one of the geusts, is found strangled in her bedroom after the first evening at Grace and Favor. In an effort to clear the mansion of scandal, Lily and Robert set out to find out the killer's identity.
"In the Still of the Night" is the second novel in the Grace and Favor series, set in upper New York State during the Great Depression. The story is filled with everyday details about life in the Depression and is full of 1930's ambience. Author Churchill continues to do a great job of developing the main characters in the story, as well as fleshing out other characters who were only briefly introduced in the series premiere "Anything Goes." I look forward to enjoying the next installment in this fun period mystery series.
A Complete Bore.......2005-06-20
As a lover of a good mystery, I picked up this book because it listed Ms. Churchill as being the "Winner of the Agatha and Macavity Mystery Readers Awards." She obviously did not win with this piece of work.
It almost reads more as a romance novel for women too ashamed to buy the books with Fabio on the cover.
The outcome is predictable and the subplot is mundane at best. Not for sincere fans of mysteries.
Fresh and Innovative Series Set in Depression - Era.......2004-03-21
Jill Churchill only gets better with the second book of her "Grace and Favor" mystery series. "In the Still of the Night" adds a little more mystery to the plot and a few additional characters as well.
"In the Still of the Night" continues the saga where Lily and her brother, Robert Brewster are contemplating various ways to add to their income. Their relative's will stipulates that they must earn their living expenses (minus the upkeep of the house, etc.) for 10 years - before inheriting the estate.
Hesitantly, they embark on the venture to invite a famous novelist for the weekend and invite various wealthy friends as paying guests. They know many who will pay for the priviledge of spending the weekend at the manor in his company. A murder takes place and in order to earn any type of profit at all - they must solve the mystery. (As well as knowing that one amongst them is a murderer.)
I especially enjoyed how the plot and characters were so believable. Also, Churchill does a wonderful job of incorporating various historical facts of the time into the story. It is interesting to read that Phoebe makes hats for Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt whose husband is the governor in a nearby city! When Lily invites Phoebe as a boarder to their mansion, Churchill gives a very sound reasoning for Phoebe's decision. This type of detail makes the characters very multi-faceted with a great deal of depth.
Excellent book; wonderful series!
I'd give it a six if I could.......2002-06-17
As a fan of Jill Churchill, I have read all of her Jane Jeffry titles. When I saw a new series, I doubted it could live up to my expectations based in the other series. I found the Grace and Favor series, if which this is the first, to be a totally fresh kind of mystery for me. The era of the Depression in a fascinating time of contrasts between the haves and have-nots. Lily and Robert are both. They seem to have inherited a line back to the good life, but making ends meet continues to be a challenge for them.
The idea of a house party with paying guests was certainly a new one to me. It was written with a lot of character development necessary to the future of the series, but with here-and-now action. A great read, as well as a great send-off for a new series.
The party should have gone off without a hitch.......2000-11-29
For Robert and Lily Brewster, the planned gathering at Grace and Favor Cottage held the possibility of a living. For the guests, both honored and paying, it turned into something gelse entirely. Lily's hopes for the literary gathering featuring author, Julian West, are thwarted when one of their guests turns up dead and the much-valued manuscript of another disappears. When it appeals the two incidents might be linked, the brother and sister duo find themselves on the hunt for another killer in order to preserve their aspirations for their inherited cottage.
Jill Churchill displays a stunning ability to integrate the history of the 1930's with the fiction she writes. This is perhaps the story's greatest recommendation. The mystery itself is thin and while suspenseful, it also becomes somewhat predictable. What the mystery has to recommend itself are the strongly drawn characters with interesting quirks of credible motives. I did enjoy Lily's guests, but perhaps the most entertaining of them all was Robert's "idiot", Mad Henry, whose skill, or lack thereof, as an inventor, proves to be a constant source of irritation and bafflement for Lily though it ends up paying off in the end.

This book is a fun way to learn about how to manage your finances. If you desire to learn the basics of personal finance in a fun and easy way, this book is for you.
Don't waste your money! .......2005-03-17
This book was a disappointment! It doesn't tell you much that you don't already know, assuming you have a job and are out of your parents' house. I would have learned from it when I was 16, but having already been on my own for 7 years it was a complete waste of time and money. The unfortunate part is that there are a lot of references to drinking and a few about divorce, so it's not even suitable for teenagers. I didn't expect expert advice, but I was expecting some tips and strategies. The best advice I learned from the book...save your money and don't buy it!

Book Description
The voices of fifty-seven young American Indians emerge in a powerful collection of original writing coedited by the anthologist of YOU HEAR ME? and THINGS I HAVE TO TELL YOU.
When the night isgone and the day isstill coming,we will be taken awayfrom this earth. We will be rising asthe next generationis coming.- from "Next Generations" by Marcia Blacksmith, age thirteen, Crow, LakotaOpen this revelatory anthology of poetry, prose, and memoir and listen to the voices of today’s young American Indians, ages eleven to twenty-two, from many nations across the country: A young man pines for his "fry bread queen" in a comically honest take on unrequited love. Another teen tells of a "carbonation dance," his summer ritual of crushing returnable Coke cans with his grandfather. Some express typical teenage angst. Others share glimpses of their culture’s unique traditions and beliefs. And many speak of culture clash - such as the homesick "rez girl" riding the New York subway like a "Cochiti carrot in the huge ethnic salad." The chorus assembled between the covers of this essential book sings a song that transcends all borders, seen and unseen.

Book Description
Brian Young is the creator of powerful, sometimes harsh poems that combine outrage with remarkable lyricism, brooding melancholy with rich, sensual, even playful language. Young's work is difficult, in the sense that it rejects reductive prettiness, and at times threatening and full of moral anger against whatever is toxic in our environment and our culture. Yet it is never less than compelling, even alluring, in the wealth of its imagery and the force of Young's authentic and original voice. This is poetry for a new millennium, poetry that dares to look at what is ugliest and most frightening in our contemporary world and still acknowledge the powerful consolations of language, of hope, of love.
Customer Reviews:
This Is The Work of A New Poetry God.......2003-06-22
Incredibly powerful poetry that shows the world for what it is: a magnificent nightmare of pain and joy, a brilliant collage of depravity and denial, of sadness and transcendence. Brian Young is an emerging genius. There is no other way to describe this idiosyncratic collection that will rip the spleen from your guts and shove it down your throat and still leave you feeling not pain, but wonder. When you finish reading this book you will feel you have been blessed. Read it! Read it! Read it!

Sexy, suspenseful, surprising fun!.......2005-06-27
I've been a reluctant fan of this author's historical romances for one reason: the heros are sometimes inexplicably cruel, remaining unrepentant right up until the final pages. Brooding bad-boy heros can be erotic in the hands of an excellent writer, which is why I keep coming back for more - and hoping for a more balanced approach to sexy male leads. In "Still of the Night," McKinney has provided just that: a solid, sensual hero who actually behaves like a hero despite his tormented past.
As plotlines go, this one has few surprises. But the setting is both unusual and marvelously evocative, the characters are an intriguing mix, the villains are deliciously nasty, and there's plenty of sexual chemistry between aristocratic Stella and "Cowboy," the sleazeball bouncer at the local dive to whom she is reluctantly, disturbingly attracted. As sure as swamps have mosquitos, there's more to Cowboy than meets the eye. (If you consider that revelation a spoiler, you're new to the romantic suspense genre. You'd have found out from reading the book jacket if you hadn't read it here, so don't go away mad.)
If I have a complaint about "Still of the Night," it's that I wanted more and longer scenes with the two key protagonists. But I'm happy to say that I enjoyed the whole book, and never felt tempted to skip to "the good parts" as I often do with other authors of romantic suspense.
Neither was I tempted, even once, to read the final pages before finishing the book - as I've done a couple of times when reading McKinney - just to assure myself that the Bad Boy would eventually stop being an ass.
I actually admired the hero this time, right from the get-go. That's the surprise I've been hoping to see from this author.
ho-hum formula writing.......2002-10-08
"Still of the Night" is the first book by Meagan McKinney that I have read. In it I encountered a "woman's blend" of romance, mystery, and suspense that seemed initially engaging. There was also a big element of "action/violence" that seemed to have strayed from another genre.
McKinney's Louisiana "downhome" sayings are fresh and unjaded, and her language escapes cliches. The love/sex scenes are well portrayed with the right touches of physical allure and emotional involvement.
In spite of her deft phrases and skillful dialogue, I found "Still of the Night" too formulaic, as if conforming to a careful outline with a strange spin intended to appeal to women and men alike. From its promising opening pages, I expected another kind of book. I missed the integrity of a full-hearted, cleaner romantic novel it could have been.
BORING!.......2002-03-08
This book was boring. What is meagan Mckinney doing, her older books, My Wicked Enchantress were good but these new ones are tiresome. I basically skimmed the entire book and the only reason why I didn't stop reading was to give her a chance.
PLEASE try to write how you used to HISTORICAL romances with some degree of fun!
After this book I may no longer buy.
Marvelous!.......2002-01-24
This is the first book I have read by Meagan McKinney, and I have to tell you that it won't be the last! Suspenseful and just the right amount of romance for my taste. Stella de St. Vallier is the main character who lives at an old manor in Louisiana. She is entangled in many webs of intrigue, darkness, and disbelief. She is also searching for the 200 plus year old treasure that is supposedly hidden in her manor, Shadow Oaks. She lives with her great-aunt Rose and friend Leora, a.k.a. Maman. Just wait till you get to the end, you won't believe it!!! Don't miss this fantastic read!
Not up to par with her previous books.......2001-12-28
I'm a huge fan of Megan McKinney's earlier books (When Angels Fall, My Wicked Enchantress). However, her last 3 or 4 books have been diappointing.
If there is one glaring difference between her ealier novels and more recent ones, it's character development. In Still of the Night, it is lacking. Sure, we read a lot about heroine Stella's academic background and family history. But that's just what it is: academic. Nothing that makes me feel for the character or want to root for her. And while growing sugar cane is an interesting field, the author details it ad nausem to the point that I was bored to death. As for the hero, he's got a little more of an edge than bland Stella, but even his standard "Something happened in my past that I feel guilty about" hangup wasn't interesting b/c it wasn't really explored. It just seemed like something thrown in to give him an "edge."
The villains were simpletons. Throw in a nostalgic, wise old aunt and her companion, a wise cracking best friend (annoying), Stella analyzing everything (she even starts to analyze and think about family history while she and the hero are in the middle of sex), and looooong passages on sugar cane and its by products, and I was skimming just to be done with the book.

Unfinished.......2000-10-08
Not her usual read. The story had a great plot line and could have been the best book she has written but the story felt unfinished. With a couple of extra chapters, one before the last of the story and a couple more at the end it would have been a 5 star book. I don't want to give the story away but you are left wondering at the end what happens to the 2 lead characters. Where do they go from here ? What happens to her ? Still I do reread it and dream up my own endings for it. Maybe that's what the author want us to do.
unhappy end.......2000-08-28
when ý bought this book as a fan of C.Lamb, ý expected a happy end, also passion and pain etc...But ý disappointed a bit. Yes there was a love but with a wrong man,yes there was a passion but not enough (of course it should be that with a wrong man) and yes there was a entrique but ý don't need a murder issue when ý want to read a love story. Sure it is not only a love story but also a mystery fiction.
