Book Description
This is the only book to tell the Rolling Stones story from the point of view of its founder, Brian Jones. With raw energy, extreme talent, unbridled sexuality, and a fiery imagination Brian propelled his band to superstardom. Legends Dylan, Lennon, McCartney, and Hendrix considered him one of their own. The Sixties generation, the decade of love, began with Brian's creating the Rolling Stones and ended with his suspicious death in July 1969. Without his band that promoted free love, sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll, there never would have been that decade of love. Brian decided to promote the music of the Delta Blues, America's true gospel music. He succeeded so well that the Rolling Stones is the only rock group from that era to continue to tour worldwide. After a fight with his band over musical direction, Brian planned to start anew and take the Rolling Stones name with him. Three weeks after being released from the band he created, Brian mysteriously drowned in his swimming pool.
Customer Reviews:
Brian Would Be Proud!.......2007-06-14
The author does a wonderful job with this book. I think Brian would have been proud. After reading comments on some of the reviews, I understand that Brian made audio tapes from which the author drew many of his quotes. Because of this, the author brings the whole story of Brian to life as if you are there in the room with him and he is speaking to you. That is what drew me into the book. That's what makes this book real. There are a lot of books on Brian, but none show him for his true self. Sure they delve into his drug use and bisexuality. These are well known facts, but the book is much more than talking about him in two dimensions.
No other book goes into who the inner Brian was. This book gives us a peek into his personal feelings and emotions like no other. It's a roller coaster of emotions. I was shocked by what Brian had to endure during his childhood. I laughed at the antics he and the Stones pulled while they were touring. I was appalled by the Stones treatment of Brian later when the band became successful. I was angered by how he died.
I often wonder now whether Brian's death was a Hate Crime because of his sexuality. Sure the 60s was the decade of free love, but there were, and still are, those out there who hate gay and bisexuals.
Brian was a musical genius and the world changed dramatically because of the music he created and the band he created-The Rolling Stones. Brian's name has been forgotten through time and I applaud this author for the guts it took to bring Brian's life to the world.
Brian Jones "Straight" From the Heart?.......2007-06-13
Although Ms. Shepherd is a capable writer, I refuse to believe half of the "biographical" information in this book. First, she quotes Brian as if she spoke with him yesterday; I couldn't find where she credited anything or anyone with his words...some of which were NOT in use in the late 60's. Give us a break. Some readers are just too smart to fall for that. The other thing I'm not comfortable with is she has Brian sleeping with Mick, and Keith and numerous other men and quotes him as being "bisexual". Maybe he was, and I am FAR from homophobic, but she creates conversations with his partners as if she was in the room!
I am very disappointed in this book, and wonder if Ms. Shepherd just didn't fantasize this entire thing!
WOW!!! THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-08
I AM A GIANT BRIAN JONES FAN- AND I ACTUALLY LIKED READING THIS BOOK-
BUT SOMEBODY HAS A VIVID IMAGINATION.........DONT LOOK FOR TRUE FACTS HERE...ALTHOUGH I BELIVE ON THE WHOLE SOME OF THE MOODS AND FEELING BETWEEN BAND MEMBERS MAY BE CORRECT THERE IS NO BASIS FOR FACTUAL EVIDENCE HERE.
no jones no stones.......2007-05-19
Without any doubt, gloria shepherd hits the nail on the head with this book about brian jones. brians storey had to be told. You will never know the struggle brian, had too forfill his dream,no stone unturned, a turely great read i urge all brian jones, and the stones fans to get the book get to know the truth about the man who give the stones their fire their soul.only for them to rip it away from him.remember everyone no jones, no stones? a must read.
SUPERB!.......2007-04-27
A MUST read for every fan of Brian Jones and the 60's - a heartbreaking, sad and shocking story. The book addressed many issues - it is riveting -superb in its telling and detailed research. Brian really had no one to stand up for him while he was alive or in death. This book has now rectified this in his memory. It was a shame that he didn't realize his own worth; but it is no wonder, given everything he went through at the hands of his family and so-called "friends". They used him up and then deserted him in life and in death.
I've read a few books about the Rolling Stones and always thought it peculiar that Brian's role in the Rolling Stones was openly minimized. Claims were made that he couldn't write songs, and he was portrayed as nothing more than a drugged out rocker. I guess his accusers thought if these lies were said enough times-especially in interviews-and put in writing, somehow they would become true and "fact"--all in the hopes that time would cloud the truth. It is obvious that these claims were never true because there are too many inconsistencies.
The truth is in this book. It is obvious that Brian had worked on many, if not all, of the Rolling Stones' songs - no one else in the band could even play most of the instruments he did or came close to his caliber. Brian wrote the musical score for a movie called "A Degree of Murder" in the late 60's - a musical score from someone who supposedly couldn't write. He was sought after by other performers such as Hendrix and Dylan. It is ludicrous for any of the Rolling Stones to claim that Brian was not an integral force within the band he created and to downplay his musical and songwriting contributions. They should all be ashamed that Brian was denied his rightful legacy, the Rolling Stones' name, his songwriting credits, and finally, his life.
In the other books that speak about Brian's murder, there have been many inconsistencies, and those stories didn't ring true. I always thought it strange that no one questioned what really happened to him. Now, thanks to this book, we know why. When I finished this book, I just couldn't believe the original verdict had not been questioned and even worse, that this case had not been reopened. I had hoped to see a form or petition in the back of this book to demand that his case be reopened, which I would gladly have signed and mailed.
My feeling is that Brian deserves the truth to come out and his case needs to be reopened. The author did a fantastic job!

Customer Reviews:
Great fun, loved it.......2006-08-18
Garrett Files combines the murder mystery and science fiction/fantasy genres. Add to the fact the writer includes a LOT of humour and you have three delightfully enjoyable books in one. The plots are easy to follow; the characters are fully developed, and very likeable. I liked these stories so much I immediately bought all the Garrett series:
Garrett, P.I. (3 book compilation)
Garrett Investigates (3 book compilation)
Garrett on the Case (2 book compilation)
Highly recommended.
Great detective/fantasy work, enjoyable set of books.......2006-06-23
This set of 3 books by Glen Cook does a lot to show the flexibility of this author, when contrasted with his Black Company series (I have yet to read the other series he has written). The three novels showcase the protagonist and his household in a number of lights, against enemies that are generally competent in their own right. Without spoilers, I felt that the detached resolution of book 3 was somewhat detached/anticlimatic, but overall this is a very enjoyable read.
Consolidation of the First Three Garrett Books.......2005-11-01
Since most of Cook's Garrett books are long out of print and very difficult to come by, you might end up having to buy this consolidation to find the individual stories. This book, "The Garrett Files," is the first of 3 consolidations (so far). The others are "Garrett, P.I." and "Garrett Investigates." This book contains the first three stories in the Garrett series: "Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," and "Cold Copper Tears." "Garrett, P.I." contains the next three: "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," and "Red Iron Nights." "Garrett Investigates" has the next three: "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat." The remaining two books ("Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols") still appear to be in print on their own. Regarding the physical book itself, I was very surprised by how good the quality was. When I was a youth I used to get books from the SFBC and the quality was less than stellar. This book appears well bound, has good quality paper, and is well cut. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what printing my book is. The date on this Amazon page is 2003. But, I can't find a date on mine anywhere (it's brand new). My cover is also different from the other one uploaded here (I've put a copy of mine here, too). Regardless, this is a very good book to have. As a pure average of my ratings for the three contained stories, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. My individual reviews follow:
"Sweet Silver Blues:" Excellent Start of the Garrett Series. This is the first of Cook's Garrett series. It's an excellent, humorous combination of Fantasy and early Detective novels (Raymond Chandler is the usual comparison). What always strikes me about this series, and especially this book (since it's the first), is how Cook's writing makes it feel like the world he's describing actually exists (and has existed for some time). It's like the history, geography, and people are THERE and he's merely opening a window to their world. This is an excellent book which I highly recommend to anyone who likes either Fantasy or Mystery. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5.
"Bitter Gold Hearts:" Very Good 2nd in the Garrett Series. This is the 2nd in Cook's Garrett series. It's a very good book, but isn't quite as good as the first in the series. The deficiency isn't anything major: it's just that I noticed a couple of the secondary characters whose personalities drastically changed from scene to scene (more so than the variability of human nature would allow). The additional role Cook gives to the Dead Man makes up for it, though. I rate it at a very good 4 stars out of 5.
"Cold Copper Tears:" An OK 3rd in Cook's Garrett Series. This is the 3rd in Cook's Garrett series. It's an excellent book for the first 99%, but, unfortunately, the ending fizzles. Oh, Garrett and the Dead Man figure things out nicely. All the 'i's are dotted and all the 't's crossed. But, instead of involving us in the denouement, Cook relegates the final cleanup to a background role. It just lacks that visceral feeling of closure. Solely because of the ending, I can rate this book at only an OK 3 stars out of 5.

In Cold Heart, the latest thriller from bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman, Dr. Alex Delaware picks up on clues missed even by his closest friend, LAPD detective Milo Sturgis. Leave it to this canny shrink to figure out that the only thing two otherwise unconnected murder victims have in common (they're both artists making comebacks after early career burnouts) may hold the key to their deaths. Even for Alex, this unlikely link is a stretch, especially since Baby Boy Lee was stabbed outside a nightclub and Julie Kipper was bludgeoned in the bathroom of an art gallery. But when a concert pianist dies on the eve of his greatest triumph, Alex is sure that the murders are not only the work of the same killer but also connected to the unsolved slayings of a Boston ballerina and an L.A. rock singer. By an even greater coincidence, two of the victims were tangentially involved with Alex's former lover, Robin Castagna, which provides the good doctor a few well placed paragraphs to ruminate on what went wrong in their romance as well as rescue her from the serial murderer who's targeted her as his next victim.
As usual, Kellerman manages to make even a far-fetched plot like this one ring true, but after 17 Alex Delaware mysteries, his series protagonist holds few surprises for the reader, who longs for something to shake Dr. D. out of his smooth complacency. Losing Robin didn't do it--maybe the new woman in Alex's life will. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Jonathan Kellerman is a master at creating psychologically nuanced novels of suspense—an author whose name is synonymous with unrelenting action, intriguing plot twists, and penetrating insight into the criminal mind. Now he ventures into bold, new territory with his biggest and best novel yet. A Cold Heart features Kellerman’s brilliant signature style—but in this tour-de-force he mines even deeper the emotional landscape of his characters: psychologist-sleuth Alex Delaware, LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis, Milo’s colleague Petra Connor, and Alex’s ex-lover, Robin Castagna—bringing them all vividly to life as never before.
“I’ve got a weird one, so naturally I thought of you,” says Milo Sturgis, summoning his friend Alex to the trendy gallery where a promising young artist has been brutally garroted on the night of her first major showing. What makes it “a weird one” is the lack of any obvious motive, and the luridly careful staging of the murder scene—which immediately suggests to Alex not an impulsive crime of passion . . . but the meticulous and taunting modus operandi of a serial killer.
Delaware’s suspicion is borne out when he compares notes with Milo’s associate, Petra Connor, and her new partner, a strange, taciturn detective with a past of his own named Eric Stahl. The Hollywood cops are investigating the vicious death of Baby Boy Lee, a noted blues guitarist, fatally stabbed after a late-night set at a local club. What links Baby Boy’s murder with that of painter Juliet Kipper is the shadowy presence of an abrasive fanzine writer. This alias-shrouded critic’s love-the-art/disdain-the-artist philosophy and his morbid fascination with the murders leads Alex and the detectives to suspect they’re facing a new breed of celebrity stalker: one with a fetish for snuffing out rising stars.
Tracking down the killer proves to be maddening, with the twisting trail leading from halfway houses to palatial mansions and from a college campus to the last place Alex ever expected: the doorstep of his ex-lover Robin Castagna, whose business association with two of the victims casts her as an unavoidable player in the unfolding case. As more and more killings are discovered, unraveling the maddening puzzle assumes a chilling new importance—stopping a vicious psychopath who’s made cold-blood murder his chosen art form.

Customer Reviews:
You're a part of the story!.......2007-06-13
Kellerman's descriptive talents are incredible. Every character, landscape, building and room is a picture in your mind's eye. Add that to his mastery of psychology and his talent for twist and you have a novel that you just don't want to put down.
Will Robin never be out of the picture??.......2006-07-16
Yeah, Robin irritates me. Okay, this one starts with the murder of Blues guitarist Baby Boy Lee in Hollywood - that's Detective Petra Connor's turf and she features prominently in this one. (She has a new partner now and I like Eric Stahl - hope he sticks around. Yeah, he's weird, but so what?) A short time later, a talented young painter is murdered and Milo Sturgis is handling this case. Milo was recently promoted to Lieutenant, but isn't tied to a desk like most Lieutenants - special deal worked out with the previous Chief of Police before he retired. He works alone and usually handles cold cases, but this dead girl was from his home town and he was specifically asked to look into it. He calls his good friend Dr. Alex Delaware in to help and Alex begins to suspect the two cases may be connected. And there may have been others - artists cut down just as they're about to become famous.
Robin Castagna, Alex's former lover, is a guitar craftsman (craftswoman?) and she had worked on Baby Boy's instruments for years. She and Alex both are listed on the liner notes of Baby Boy's most recent CD - will that make them both potential victims too? Alex goes digging, as usual - starts making broad connections, but he is also dealing with a new relationship and all the uncertainty that entails. We met Psychologist Allison Gwynn in The Murder Book and now he is pursuing her affections - it's nice being with someone who gets it, as she puts it. Robin has a new guy too, but she just irritates me so bad - she wants her nice quiet life with Tim, but she wants to be able to run to Alex whenever she feels like it too - keeping him trapped in emotional limbo.
They're dealing with a very clever and vicious killer and Alex ends up in danger, as usual, but this time it is Robin who puts him there. Allison actually helps keep him safe. I like Allison - hope things work out with her and Alex. Another great twisted tale from the king of great twisted tales.
Another juicy story.......2006-05-03
I really enjoyed this book, especially listening on tape. The reader was excellent as well. So glad Alex has finally found someone that understands his work and has parted from Robin. His new love seems more like a realistically portrayed woman character than Robin ever did. Great story, pretty spooky whodunit!
LAPD Investigation of Serial Murders With Help of Psychologist.......2005-09-13
With a cast of former fictional investigators of the LAPD, Author Kellerman adds a sleuth-psychologist to assist in solving Serial Murders. It is a compelling story, entailing good police work, and believable investigators, who solve a difficult murder mystery. A book hard to put down.
From another mystery writer.......2005-08-07
I am always delighted to discover a new Alex Delaware novel on the book stands, and I almost always buy it the moment I see it. What I find so wonderful about this series is that it always seems fresh, as if I am reading Kellerman for the first time. While the plots are strong and move along well, what intrigues me most are the relationships among the characters. I like Alex for his quick wit and for his compassion for victims, but I love his human failings, too. The wonderful thing is that Delaware's inherent goodness may be jarred, but is never overcome by the violence he sees in his work with Sturgis.

Excellent work from Cho, the illustrator.......2007-01-05
Clear line illustrations, hilarious punchlines. Liberty Meadows is to comic book readers what the holy grail was to Indy.
Please write more Liberty Meadows, Monkey Boy!.......2006-11-25
In this collection things begin to get complex between Brandy and Frank and Jen. At the time of writing this volume is not available in paperback, but we don't care, we just have to have more!
And there is your main problem - since this book was released there has only been one additional comic of Liberty Meadows sold (and Frank Cho seems so busy who knows when the next will be?).
We'll all be waiting a long time to see how things work out (unless you find a copy of Liberty Meadows Wedding Album which strangely circumvents the whole timeline).
Cover gallery, a few sketches and character guide in the back.
A Wonderful Discovery.......2006-05-05
Frank Cho's "Liberty Meadows" is located near the intersection of Cheesecake and Comic Strip. His best is quite good indeed, with humor standing up well against the blander fair in your local paper.
He takes special care in drawing the lovely ladies in his strip, but never descends to crudity. At the end of this collection of comics is a short appendix of sketches. These are well worth having in their own right.
It is a shame Frank no longer publishes his comic strips in the paper. (He used to be carried by the Washington Post for example.) Frankly his sparkling humor and artistic drawings are simply too good for the grubby little panels that inhabit our newspapers.
Awesome.......2006-02-15
The only other review as of Feb 14 2006 seems to refer to some other book called The Ride.
Frank Cho once again entertains us with some terrific comedy. The cover of the book is just a glimpse of all the oomph that the book contains. Fantastic artwork and humour combine to make this book a must have for Liberty Meadows fans.
Personally I just cant wait for the next one to come out.

A must have for fans of this Scottish series by Nora Roberts!
4th in a series -- GREAT - GET THIS ONE!.......2002-10-25
One of the short stories -- and #4 in a series -- I think of the Hampton brothers.
MIRACLE OF THE HEART is the story of Rafe Hampton and Blythe Somers.
Blythe has taken some ten orphans in the Shenandoah Valley, 1864 and is trying to give the children a pleasant Christmas.
Seth Hampton, a doctor for the southern troops, the Mosby raiders, has dropped into Blythe's farm with a wounded General Massey. She knows that the Union soldiers will be looking for these two. But Seth has been supplying Blythe with what little food he could spare to help her support the little ones.
Benji, at five is the youngest one, he came with his sister, Margaret who is eight. Then came Jaime, an embittered twelve year old asking for work in exchange for food and he ended up staying. Traumatized nine year old Suzie came, then Abraham and Micah, nine and eight year old brothers who had set out to find their father and found Blythe instead. Then cama Sarah, a house slave who had gotten lost and Katy and July, two like Sarah who had been sold.
Danger came in the form of Major Rafe Hampton, whom Blythe had not heard from in two years. Eighteen months ago Rafe had been informed by a malevalant neighbor that Blythe was marrying his brother, Seth. He has become hard and bitter thinking that he has lost Blythe.
Oh, what a story - really great, especially the way it was resolved --- look for Seth's story in HH Untamed: Maverick Hearts 1993. ---- series starts with Swampfire - Samara and Silver Link - All Harlequin Historicals.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Lorraine Page, heroine of Cold Shoulder and Cold Blood, returns with a new face, new wardrobe, new office, new assistant, new dog, and new love--all but the last, L.A. police lieutenant Jake Burton, courtesy of a big bonus earned on her previous case. Lynda La Plante, creator of the PBS series Prime Suspect, puts Lorraine right in the middle of a murderous art swindle scheme. When Harry Nathan, a charismatic producer, director, and collector, is murdered in his Brentwood swimming pool, Lorraine's hired to find out who killed him and then to track the missing art or the millions it's been turned into. Which of Harry's wives had the most to gain from his death? Why is faded ex-movie star Raymond Vallance, Harry's closest friend, still hanging around? Is it something to do with the porno tapes Harry's been blackmailing him over, or was he involved in the swindle, too? It would take a miniseries to unravel all the mcguffins and red herrings La Plante puts in Lorraine's--and the reader's--way. There's the accidental death of her new assistant, Decker--but Lorraine's too busy with her new lover to connect it to the Harry Nathan case. And the attacks on her own life--is there someone from her past seeking vengeance for something she did when she was a cop? Fans of her two previous Lorraine Page suspense novels won't want to miss this one. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Having established her reputation with the enormously successful, two-time Emmy Award-winning television series Prime Suspect, author/screenwriter Lynda La Plante enhanced it with her more recent popular CBS TV miniseries, Bella Mafia. The same unbeatable storytelling power she brings to her films is the engine that drives her new thriller, Cold Heart, from its disturbing beginning to its shocking climax.
A single gunshot into a Beverly Hills swimming pool ends the life of movie mogul Harry Nathan, a man with so many enemies--including a widow and two ex-wives--that the challenge for PI Lorraine Page at first seems to be the surfeit of suspects. Newly established as an independent private investigator, Lorraine comes to the case hungry and determined to succeed--but Harry Nathan's death is the beginning, not the end, of a trail of lust and conspiracy leading to the darkest corners of the international art world. A sordid trail of video evidence implicates other leading Hollywood figures in the case, while Lorraine finds her own investigations hampered by the personal intervention of new police chief Jake Burton, a man who appears to know everything bad about her but still seems determined to know more.
As the failures of her past come back to haunt her, Lorraine finds that solving this murder is no longer just a job, it's about recapturing her own self-worth. A first-rate crime story, a love story, and more--it's precisely the kind of superior suspense novel we've come to expect from Lynda La Plante, one of the preeminent originators of realistic crime drama.

Cold Heart.......2005-04-05
I basically agree with Terry Mathews and "rationalcoach". I couldn't believe LaPlante killed off Decker, one of the only decent people in the book, so about two-thirds of the way through with the totally unrealistic second date proposal from Jake and extreme happiness on Lorraine's part, I started to get suspicious and went to the back of the book assuming she was going to kill off Jake. That would have been bad enough. But to kill off Lorraine, unreal! I will never read another LaPlante book and I will make a point of reading available reviews before I buy in the future. I thought Cold Shoulder was great, wasn't crazy about the second one, but to say I was disappointed in Cold Heart is a major understatement.
Warning - spoilers.......2002-12-19
The first book in the Lorraine series, Cold Shoulder, was darn good. Great characterizations, good plot. The second, 'Cold Blood', was not as good, but still very readable. 'Cold Heart' went straight downhill. The plot was haphazard, the characterizations were mediocre. Lorraine lost a bit of her sparkle and if I hadn't read the first two books earlier, I would have found her fairly uninteresting. However, it was the ending that made this book horrible. You do NOT kill off your heroine. Sure, it can happen in real life, but this isn't real life. We read books and go to movies to see what life could and should be - and killing off someone like Lorraine, who has finally succeeded in her struggle to pull her life together, sends a message that life is hopeless. There was not even an attempt at a noble purpose in her death.
I've never given away an ending of a book before, but this one deserves to be exposed. Shame on Ms LaPlante. My advice - don't bother reading this book and allow a successful Lorraine to live on in your mind, as someone to respect and admire.
neat & clean.......2002-04-06
I recieved this book promptly and it was very clean, just like knew
MY HEART IS NOW "COLD"!!.......2001-11-02
I've so enjoyed the first two books in this series, Cold Shoulder and Cold Blood, that it was actually exciting for me to begin this one in the hopes that Lorraine Page is still on the right track towards putting her life back together. When Cold Blood ended, Lorraine and her partners had just received a million dollar bonus for solving their last case. This installment begins with Lorraine spending some of that money getting new office digs, a new car, some new clothes and waiting for the phone to ring in her private investigation agency. Her assistant Rosie has been replaced by Decker since Rosie and Rooney are still honeymooning in Europe. Fans of this series were delighted when Rosie found love in Cold Blood - how ironic.
The phone finally rings at Page Investigations beginning this new adventure into the world of movie producing, pornography, art theft and a possible love interest for Lorraine. The appearance of Jake Burton, as the new chief of detectives, will add some spice to the series not only in the police department but in Lorraine's apartment as well. As she tries to find out who really killed Harry Nathan, all the supporting characters in Harry's world begin to die as well. As his estate travels from one ex-wife to the other, Lorraine will also travel to the Hamptons and New Mexico in an effort to tie all the loose ends together.
While Lorraine is out of town, many things will be going on behind the scenes back home in LA. Rooney and Rosie have returned from their honeymoon and come up with some startling evidence that might bring Lorraine's past demons back to the forefront endangering her life.
Cold Heart is definitely a perfect title for this book as my heart was cold as I read and cried through the last few pages. I have only one thing to say to the author - How Could You?
I liked it.......2001-07-12
Wow- after reading some of the other reviews I am shocked. I loved this book. I was sad and shocked by the ending, but it didn't nullify every thing else good in the story. I am saddened that we won't have any future Lorraine books, but I am sure that Ms. LaPlante will write something equally entertaining.

Customer Reviews:
Great first book for the author.......2006-06-27
This is the only suspense mystery that I have read so far from this author. The other books are more fantasy, horror novels. The story takes place in Alaska with a good description of the time, place, and lives of the eccentric characters involved. A sudden murderous rampage in the wilderness leaves the main character fighting for her young life for the third time. Think you know the ending? Don't be so sure...fooled me.
My 1st taste of McGrew.......2005-01-04
was not disappointing. An excellent psychotic thriller that kept me reading the entire night. Thank goodness I was on Vacation.
A cold day in hell..........2004-08-31
Chandler McGrew's "Cold Heart" is ultimately a story of how the underdog can emerge victorious in spite of insurmountable odds. Although the story takes place in a town of about a dozen inhabitants, the fear and gripping paralasys of a psychopathic killer is nonetheless akin to the terror one would read about of a big-city serial killer. "Cold Heart" is a gripping, enticing, hair-stand-up-on-the-back-of-your-head page-turner filled with everything a true fan could want. I heartily recommend you purchase this book and sit in a quiet place for a while and enjoy it as it unravels before and surprises you with with one of the best endings I've read in the genre. Just make sure the lights are on and the door is locked...
AuthorZone.Com Book Review.......2003-09-02
Houston Police Officer Mickey Ascherfeld suffered the horrendous death of her parents as a teen. Years later in Houston, Mickey once more faces a merciless foe that leaves her brutalized and unsure what to do. When Mickey receives a letter from old friend inviting her to Alaska she finally decides to go.
Four years later, McCray, Alaska is proving to be a healing refuge to the woman who now pursues stained glass as an outlet for pent up stress. The tiny settlement provides the slow pace of life that Mickey needs to get her life back together. Then without warning the town oddball Eldred Hoskins ensures Mickey's life will take another drastic turn. She must use every bit of police training to keep herself and a local teenager alive.
Writer McGrew has outdone himself with his first foray into writing. COLD HEART is a fast paced work filled with short snappy chapters presenting a tale that is mostly confined to a time period of four hours. The tightly drawn, fear-inspiring suspense thriller is jam packed with gore, chills, a maddened killer and a bit of a surprise as to what has set old El off. The inaccessibility of the hamlet lends to feelings that escape is impossible and that the people living in the area must either find a way to stop the mad man or be annihilated.
Some characters are not fleshed out as completely as might be. What might have led to El's frenzy is not foretold in subtle clues. The surprise causation for El's behavior is not quite as trustworthy as would be, had a few perspicacious hints and red herrings been tossed into the mix during the period leading up to the rampage.
Writer McGrew does throw in an abundance of turns and twists. The book is sure to please all who enjoy a good suspense filled, action packed read. Despite the small omissions surrounding El and his lapse of reality COLD HEART is an entertaining read, perfect for a winter afternoon in front of the fireplace.
