The freshness of blue and white.......2007-03-30
I bought this book because I like blue and white colour combinations. The patterns in this book are simple, and I'd recommend this book to either those who are cross-stitch beginners or those, who like me, can't get enough possible motifs to work in this colour combination.
If you are looking for more challenging cross-stitch patterns, you can adapt some of these but you may prefer to look at other books.
In the world of cross-stitch, the possibilities are endless!

good for quick work.......2003-09-03
Although this book does not offer very difficult or time consuming patterns, I have used several of them for gift items, such as table napkins, napkin rings, and bandanas for headwear and found the patterns more than satisfactory for these uses.
Better books available.......2002-02-16
Unless you want very simple beginning cross stich, you will not like this book. The designs are unrealistic and uninteresting. A good deal of the book is taken up by the history of the art form and even that is not well written. Save your money there are better books out there.

Very Pretty Designs.......2002-09-04
I have had this book for years. The desins are classic and could easily be adapted to other color schemes. LARGE EASY TO READ BLACK AND WHITE CHARTS.
some really cute designs.......2002-03-18
This book has some really cute designs in it. The blue and white scheme may sound boring, but the authors have done a great job of using many hues of blues and other subtle colors to create some beautiful pieces.
This is not the best example of crosstitch books available........1998-07-13
slsdaniel1@aol.com from Dallas, Texas, 07/12/98 This is not the best example of crosstitch books available. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book as it pales alongside most others currently available. The execution of the charts is not particularly expert and the subject matter is often trite. Even though blue and white is my favorite color scheme, I could find nothing in this book that merited hours of toil with the needle and thread. Perhaps you might disagree with me, but do not buy this book sight unseen.

Book Description
A missing little girl named Maggie Rose. A family of three brutally murdered in the projects of Washington, D.C. The thrill-killing of a beautiful elementary school teacher. A psychopathic serial kidnapper/murderer who calls himself the Son of Lindbergh. He is so terrifying that the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police cannot outsmart him-even after he's been captured.
Gary Soneji is a mild-mannered mathematics teacher at a Washington, D.C., private school for the children of the political and social elite. He's so popular that the kids all call him "Mr. Chips." And he's very, very smart. Growing up, he always knew he was smarter than the rest of them-he knew that the Great Ones always fooled everybody. He kidnaps Maggie Rose, the golden-haired daughter of a famous movie actress, and her best friend, Shrimpie Goldberg, the son of the secretary of the treasury, right out from under the noses of their two Secret Service agents. But Gary Soneji is not surprised at his skill. He's done it before. Hundreds of times before.
Alex Cross must face the ultimate test as a psychologist: how do you outmaneuver a brilliant psychopath? Especially one who appears to have a split personality-one who won't let the other half remember those horrific acts?
Soneji has outsmarted the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police. Who will be his next victim?
Download Description
Gary Soneji is every parent's worst nightmare. He calls himself "the son of Lindbergh." His family and colleagues know him as a mild-mannered, unassuming guy, and would find it impossible to imagine him as a psychopath, a serial murderer, and now, the perpetrator of the most notorious kidnapping of the century. Only Soneji knows himself as the killer of countless victims and as the merciless kidnapper of Maggie Rose, the golden-haired daughter of a famous actress, and Shrimpie Goldberg, the young son of the Secretary of the Treasury. The unenviable task of tracking down Soneji has been assigned to Alec Cross, a black Washington, D. C., homicide detective with a Ph.D. in psychology and a soft spot for the mysterious, seductive, blonde Secret Service supervisor who has also been drawn into the case. Suddenly, everything in Cross's personal and professional life has become explosive. As a man, Cross must deal with the conflicts and dangers of a forbidden love affair. As a psychologist, he must face the toughest test of his career: How do you outsmart a brilliant psychopath, especially one who appears to have a split personality--one who won't let the other half remember those horrific acts? So far, Soneji has eluded the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police. Who will be his next victim?

Along Came A Spider.......2007-04-30
This was the second book i had read of JP's. I'm glad it was because now i am addicted! - this book was fantastic, thrilling right to the very end i couldn't put it down. I read this book in a little over a week prior to this i would usually read novels over a period of about 2 to 3 months. JP has changed my whole overlook on reading novels and the Alex Cross series is a fantastic chain to begin with - top rating for Along Came a Spider.
Things (and people) are not always what they seem..........2007-04-25
This is an eerie book...the disconnect between "normal" facade and perverted hidden reality is a major theme in Patterson's Cross series. Effective disguises and role-playing over long periods of time, plus the ability to wait for years to execute a crime plan, is what makes Gary Murphy/Soneji so frightening.
I had read Kiss the Girls earlier, with no background on Alex Cross. Reread it and found that what I remembered were the characters Kate and Scootchie. I had totally forgotten who did the crimes...in Kiss the Girls this is revealed at the very end...we're surprised but also disappointed since we don't know this guy as a human being at all, only as Casanova. Casanova and the Gentleman Caller are not portrayed with anything like the depth of Patterson's Gary character.
Also Patterson handles the surprise ending much better in Spider. Jezzie's name should tip us off (Jezebel?), as well as the fact that her relationship with Alex is just too too magazine-story perfect. But the gradual revelation of what happened to Maggie Rose - as well as how and why - is well done and seeing her reunited with her mother is very satisfying.
I enjoy Alex and his family, his midnight porch piano-playing, etc., as well as Man Mountain Sampson, Nana Mama and the kids. At the end of Kiss the Girls, it is clear that Soneji will be coming around again (shades of The Poet, by Michael Connelly). Yeah, it's different to know who the criminal is, early on...maddening to watch him dance away...but hey, that's what being hooked on this stuff is all about!
Gripping the pages.......2007-04-16
This was the first Patterson book I have read, and I enjoyed it immensly. I found that this book had me gripping the pages from start to finish, and found that it was really hard to put it down.
I will definately read more from this author in the future. A good read.
Highly addictive.......2007-03-08
This novel was amazing. I read nonstop for a day & a half because I simply could not put it down. The movie does not do this book justice! Even if you've seen the movie, the ending of this story will shock you.
great mystery fiction.......2007-02-17
This is, simply, a very entertaining book. It has a great story line that is both suspensfull and surprising. Paterson gets into his character (Alex Cross) like no other. Writing, story line, and characters all develop well and come together smoothly. Cool Beans!

"The first time I heard Shakespeare quoted, it was as a joke," writes poet and Asian American scholar Shirley Geok-Lin Lim in the introduction to her American Book Award-winning memoir, Among the White Moon Faces. Before she'd ever read the play, Lim took the word "Romeo"--as spoken by Malaysians--to mean a sort of "male effect," a sexualized, Westernized code word for "the kind of thing men did to women." "This was Shakespeare in my tropics, and romantic love, and the English language: mashed and chewed, then served up in a pattering patois which was our very own. Our very own confusion." In many ways, Among the White Moon Faces is the chronicle of just this sort of confusion: linguistic, cultural, and sexual. The child of a Chinese father and a peranakan, or assimilated Malaysian Chinese mother, Lim grew up with a tangle of names, tongues, and identities: Lim Geok-Lin, to signify her position in her grandfather's lineage; Shirley, after her father's fascination with the American child-star Shirley Temple. As a girl, Lim refuses to speak the Hokkien dialect of her father's Chinese family, prefers the Malay spoken by her mother's relatives, and eventually winds up speaking almost exclusively English. Years later, as a visiting professor in Penang, she finds herself teaching in English, her language of fluency, while an Australian colleague leads his classes in Bahasa Malay and asks her advice in translating American idioms.
These cross-cultural ironies echo throughout Lim's thoughtful, politically astute memoir, which covers ground ranging from the neglect and hunger of her Malaysian childhood, to her Anglophile education, to the loneliness of her first years in America. As a Chinese Malaysian, she faced discrimination not only from the colonial British, but later, after independence, from ethnic Malays as well. Reared in an expatriate culture, Lim was doubly dislocated by immigrating to America. Here, too, Lim encountered prejudice, as an Asian female, as a poet, and as a brown-skinned, British-accented anomaly who fit no one's notion of who she should be. In the end, Lim finds a kind of balance in her perpetual exile, using sisterhood and the solace of writing to create a sense of place--and to counter the pull of ancient ghosts. "Listening, and telling my own stories, I am moving home," she writes. --Mary Park

A distinct contribution to cross-cultural biography.......2003-09-14
This book is a distinct contribution to the genre of cross-cultural literature which deal with themes of identity and displacement. Although many American reviewers describe her as an Asian-American writer, this description fails to capture the unique perspective she brings from her origins from one of the smaller Asian countries (Malaysia) which has contributed relatively fewer immigrants to the United States than have other sources of Asian-America writers - Korea, Japan, Vietnam, or China. Sharing some of the author's background in having also grown up in Malaysia and studied in the United States as a student, I was personally attracted to this book. In this autobiography, Shirley Lim explores identity and adaptation in multiple settings, from growing up in a Chinese community in multi-racial Malaysia before and after independence from British colonial rule, through her student experiences in the United States which finally becomes the adopted home where is teaches college students and is a writer. Her style is witty, direct, and intensely personal, and powerfully conveys the sense of otherness and acute observation which comes with being caught in cultural cross-currents. I recommend this highly.
Similar Themes.......2000-12-16
Shirley Lim's book, Among the White Moon Faces, takes the reader through her life, starting from when she was a young girl in Malaysia, through all of her schooling, and through her move to the United States. Throughout the book she describes her thoughts and her feelings on her various hardships, and really tries to communicate with the reader.
Personally, I felt very ambivalent about the book. I didn't particularly like, nor dislike it. The writing is advanced, and complex, so it's really not for younger readers. If you've read a lot of other works by Asian American writers, you'll notice a lot of similar themes. I didn't feel as if Shirley Lim said anything new, or different with this book. Also, I felt like the second half of the book went very slowly. However, if you enjoy a lot of descriptive writing, or autobiographies, you'll like this book.
A master of identity.......2000-02-25
Shirley Geok-Lin Lim's memoir AMONG THE WHITE MOON FACES begins with her girlhood in 1940s Malaysia. From te beginning, her identity is complex and ambivalent: the daughter of a Chinese-speaking father and a Malay-speaking mother who separate when she is young, she is educated in an English-language school in a nation torn over whether to discard English as a remnant of colonialism. Lim's life falls apart when she is six years old. The family loses its money, her mother abandons her abusive husband, and little Shirley is forced on the charity of disdainful relatives. In the years that follow, even as Malaysia gains its independence from Great Britain and careens between multiethnic democracy and Malay nationalism, Shirley tries to make a life for herself. She struggles to attend college and to build a career as a student of literature, despite the potent obstacles she faces in the form of chauvinist male colleagues and boyfriends. Ultimately, she moves to the United States to attend graduate school, just in time to avoid the explosive anti-Chinese riots which put a crushing end to the dream of a nonracial society. Thus marooned in the United States, Lim must struggle once again to make a place for herself, as an Asian-American woman. She earns a doctorate, marries, has a son, becomes a professor (first at an urban community college with a largely Latino student population, later in the suburbs) and discovers feminism. AMONG THE WHITE MOON FACES is an unforgettable experience. It is simultaneously a picaresque tale made up of ironic and often hilarious incidents, an incisive account of post-colonial Malaysia, an inspiring tale of a modern immigrant "making good," and a readable case study of the experience of a thoughtful women in modern society. Perhaps most importantly, the work is a model exposition of the complexities of identity. Lim constantly tries to discover who she is, and where there is a "homeland" for her, where she can be safe and accepted. After taking us through that quest with her, Lim the mature woman makes us understand that we must build our own individual "homes" while working to construct a larger home for society. Lim is unsparing about the limitations of most people's vision, but she does not hector, and she is no more sparing of herself for being unsure about her own views (one classic anecdote recounts her ambivalent relations with the Latino apartment dwellers who take over the front stoop of her house). Fortunately, the little girl who was once constantly punished for telling the truth has not learned her lesson. She continues to enlighten us and remind us of our national purpose as Americans to forge an inclusive and varied society.
Memory Lane for another Malaccan.......1999-11-06
Knowing the "aunt" ( who worked in the local hospital) personally in Shirley Lim's White Moon Faces and lived in Malacca for the 1st 17 years of my life this book has brought back nostalgic memories of this period in time. I live in Melbourne - Australia now. "Aunt" read the book too. She is pleased to know you are doing fine in the US.
Chinese, American, jewish, feminist all at once, yes........1999-06-13
This autobiography tracks the trajectory of a self that becomes Chinese, American, Jewish, feminist, separately and in the process all at once. It is written with clarity and a sense of quest, embodying a trans-Pacific quality of risk and self-invention, becoming diasporic and full of poetic longings among the moon faces of which I am one. I enjoyed it, and am grateful for this Chinese American scholar's auto/bio/graphic quest into poetry and belonging, creating a family and home across the waters and on the Rim. Read it and enjoy.

Really cute, whimsical designs in "I Done My Best!" Several of Ms. White's designs feature really darling angels and are very pleasing. (I like the 4th of July angel.) The author also suggests how you can create & arrange your own designs.
I ordered my copy from Amazon, without whom I would never have discovered this book.
Saundra White, please publish more designs!
There are several web sites on the Net that provide help and techniques in tea-dyeing muslin & linen, so look for those when you get ready to stitch.

Peddler of Quotas, Heterophobia and Balkanization.......2003-03-13
Many corporations have adopted this book as part of their Corporate Diversity Program. This is a tragic shame, as the authors do little more than attack traditional values and American culture under the guise of diversity. While this book is marketed in the business category, it is in fact, a thinly veiled collection of radical left wing political writings. This book does not subscribe to Dr. King's "Content of their Character" premise, but rather focuses on dominant and non-dominant "groups". Equal rights are not the focus of the authors, but rather equal outcomes, ignoring the relative effectiveness of differing patterns of behavior, cultural values or economic practices in producing wealth, advancing careers or building functional communities. The authors believe that decisions should only have consequences if the decision maker is part of a "dominant" group.
In the corporations that the authors would have us build, "incorrect" points of view, including values, facts and integrity are cast aside if they conflict with the authors "correct" worldview. Family and Christian values are dismissed as homophobia and heterosexism, in effect creating a new prejudice to marginalize Evangelical Christians. Those who simply believe in a free society based on equal rights and equal application of laws are simply dismissed out of hand. The editors and authors of this anthology advocate suppression of free speech for the sake of their utopian "non-judgemental" (IF and only if you fit one of their acceptable "groups") vision.
This book is divisive. Instead of advancing diversity it serves only to undermine integrity and trust. By substituting radical orthodoxy for open dialog, it in effect creating a new segregation between those who believe in American culture and those who would change it to something more closely resembling socialism. Instead of wasting your time on this, read Vision of the Annointed, or Race and Culture by economist and social scientist Thomas Sowell, A Dream Deferred, by Shelby Steele, Diversity by Peter Wood, Who Stole Feminism by Christina Hoff Sommers or The End of Racism by Dinesh D'Souza!
Insightful and Inclusive: A Must Read for Managers/Trainers.......1997-01-14
The Diversity Factor shows the emerging maturity in the understanding of valuing and managing diversity in today's workplace. By incorporating writings and viewpoints of those other than the Editors, the benefits of diveristy and multiple perspectives are promoted within the book itself. This alone supports the shifting paradigms about the richness and merits of diversity. Cross and Blackburn White are to both be acknowledged for this refreshing and engaging publication, in addition to their continued efforts publishing The Diversity Factor periodical. The Editors step out of the comfort zone by addressing differnces that make many uncomfortable but yet are very important, such as the gay and lesbian worker and how their difference matters. Whenever a diversity book, management program, or training program exclude sexual orientation, promoting and inclusive understanding of diversity is greatly diserviced and undermined. Cross and Blackburn White break free of this dilemma by embracing inclusion. As a Diveristy Awareness and Communications Educator, I highly recommend this insightful and inclusive reading to all managers and diveristy educators as a valuable resouce.
