Book Description

Jim Bishop is a hard man, as cold as the wind off the water and tough to the point of brutality. Scott Weiss is Bishop's boss, a world-weary ex-cop who runs a private detective agency out of a concrete tower in the heart of San Francisco. In this powerfully original series debut by award-winning and bestselling author Andrew Klavan, Weiss sends Bishop to investigate corruption at a Northern California airport-and so sets events in motion that will lead both men on a desperate hunt for a master assassin.

Bishop's assignment is to investigate the airport and report back to Weiss. But Bishop prefers to make up the rules as he goes along. He's willing to beat any man into the ground and draw any woman into his bed in order to get the answers he's after. A pilot himself, he takes to the air to check out the illegal flights of a thug names Chris Wannamaker. Then he coolly seduces Wannamaker's lonely wife in order to find out more.

Back in the city, as Weiss struggles to rein Bishop in, he begins a connected investigation of his own. A death in a mansion in Presidio Heights, a seemingly random murder South of Market, an apparent suicide off the Golden Gate Bridge, all seem to bear the mark of Weiss' old nemesis, an expert gun-for-hire who goes by the name of the Shadowman. It's a trail of blood, and each step of it seems to bring Weiss closer to Julie Wyant, a mysterious beauty who captures the imagination of every man she meets.

Soon Bishop has found his way into the center of a massive criminal conspiracy, a plan set to climax with an act of audacious violence and a murder that would be impossible for any killer but one. And with his operative's wife in danger, Weiss begins a race against time to outsmart the murderer who stalks his nightmares and to rescue the woman who haunts his dream.
If you like your tough guys really tough, your femme fatale and your action explosive-welcome to Dynamite Road.

5 out of 5 stars A hellfire thriller of dynamic proportions!.......2006-11-10

The Weiss Agency has been commissioned to investigate corruption at a Northern California airport. Ex-cop P.I. Scott Weiss sends tough-as-nails operative Jim Bishop on assignment to infiltrate and uncover illegal activities. Weiss begins a few investigations of his own, one of which ties a dangerous assassin to the case Bishop is working. Weiss attempts to reel Bishop in, but Bishop forges ahead according to his own rules which lands him on a clandestine rendezvous in the middle of nowhere. He soon finds that his cover is compromised with no way of communicating a warning about what he discovered. In a race against time, Weiss must use his instincts and Bishop his hard edge to take down a criminal conspiracy.

The characters are tough, passionate, and humanly flawed. The plot is wound tight with enough cliff-hangers to keep you teetering on the edge. Guaranteed to keep you turning the page--hard-boiled detective fiction at its finest!

5 out of 5 stars A killer thrill ride on the dark side.......2006-04-25

Dark evil fun. It's Jim Bishop's world we just live in it.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as Klavan's Shotgun Alley.......2005-11-26

I am revamping my review of Klavin's book here a little bit. I pretty thoroughly trashed Dynamite Road a month ago when I read it and was telling a friend of mine about how much I thought this book reaked. I was told that I was off my rocker and given the book 'Shotgun Alley.' I have to admit that Klavan is a much better writer than I originally gave him credit for and enjoyed the second book that I read of his much-much more.

But I still can't get myself to give 'Dynamite Road' more than the three stars I originally gave it. I still think that Klavan skates on a very fine edge when he writes. His prose is very clunky and moralizing. Time and again Klavan crosses over the edge and and Dynamite Road he just pushes it too far.

Below is the ravaging review that I wrote before:

I could pull out hundreds and hundreds of quotes from this novel that would make your teethe clatter. The pain that Klavin evokes here is almost intolerable at times. How he has become a successful author is apparent at times due to his interesting plots, but man oh man; I am shocked that a book like this could end up being published.

'Dynamite Road' is located in the realm of 50's noir. The characters are stock Warner Brothers, two-dimensional personas that attempt to crackle. I kept thinking of Bunkers 'Dog Eat Dog' as I read this. The hard core characters that Bunker created make 'Dynamite Road' look like a DC comic in comparison. I feel like I am being overly generous by giving Klavin's work here three stars. I highly suggest that you look elsewhere for your next read.

You might want to try 'Dog Eat Dog', but its pretty bleak. Also on par with that is 'Mystic River' by Lehane. For a more up-beat mystery/thriller work you might want to try Coben's more recent works. Or you might want to check out Kennedy's 'the Big Picture,' an under-appreciated work that came out a decade ago.

4 out of 5 stars A very good read........2005-04-10

It's hard to say what made me like this as much as I did. While the suspense is good, it's the crisp writing and the very intriguing characters that really drew me in and kept me going. I'd not read Klavan before, but I can guarantee I'll be reading him again

4 out of 5 stars Very simplistic story but well worth your time.......2005-02-01

The plotline of this novel comes straight out of a 40's gangster movie, although it's been updated to deal with the modern world. But Klavan has added an extra undefined something to the story - something that puts it more than a cut above your average detective novel.

True, the people are stock characters - the hard-boiled private eye who was once a cop; his partner, who's still on the force and has the personality of a crab; the gorgeous damsel in distress (who we never actually get to meet); and the prototypical arch-villains. But they all mesh together and you enjoy knowing what happens to them. I've read many other similar stories - some published in the 40's, some fairly recently - and a lot of them I just discarded because the people in them were basically cartoon characters. Not here. I hope the next novel in this series (and the cover indicates this is the first of a series) tells us a bit more about the damsel in distress, and about the mysterious Shadowman and his relationship with Weiss.

Oh, and if the author is the Drew Klavan whose twin brothers I grew up with a few blocks down the road, and he reads this - tell those brothers I said hello.
