Book Description
You May Be Commitment-Phobic If:
- You have a mile-long list of requirements for your ideal mate
- You go from one short-lived relationship to the next
- You have a habit of dating "unavailable" men
- You think many of your married friends have settled for less
- You are constantly blowing "hot" and "cold" in your relationships
For years, it was the men who had the monopoly on commitment-phobia. Today, single women are the fastest-growing segment of the population, with over forty-seven million single women in this country and twenty-two million of them between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four. Whatever the reasons -- fear of divorce, increased financial independence, delayed motherhood -- more women than ever no longer feel the urgency, or the ability, to settle down. Lucky for this growing group of women, author and former commitment-phobe Elina Furman has written Kiss and Run, the first-ever book about female commitment anxiety.
Filled with fun quizzes, first-person testimonials, and step-by-step action plans, Kiss and Run includes the top-five panic buttons, advice for curbing overanalysis, and tips for fixing negative commitment scripts. You'll also find the seven types of commitment-phobes, including the Nitpicker, the Serial Dater, and the Long-Distance Runner.
Based on the stories of more than one hundred women, this straight-talking guide helps single women conquer commitment anxiety and say yes to love.

Great Resource.......2007-02-16
The information is very applicable to young people searching for answers regarding thier love life. I would recommend this book to many of my friends.
Great One.......2007-02-15
This is a great one Elina, it hit the nail on the head in many areas for me. Being able to put into words what I was feeling, I never thought that it was possible, I always thought it was the man who had committment phobia, who would've guessed it could be the woman. That was never discussed before Thanks a lot for your help!!!! Keep up the good work
Must read!.......2007-02-12
I heard Elina on a radio station and I couldn't believe it: she was describing me exactly. My BF and I had so many fights over the years. He wants to get married. I'm not sure... One day I love him, the next day I find myself crying in the bathroom. It's been hell... It's nice to know that there's lots of other women who are afraid of commitment. I went to the bookstore, read it in two days.

Excellent Native American Biography.......2006-02-09
White-Man-Runs-Him is an easy to read biography that includes a comprehensive history of Plains Indian tribes and a vanished way of life. The story of the Crow and US Army relations is poignant and revealing, though some of the truth has come out in other tellings of the Indian Wars stories. Well written and well documented.
Great reading!!.......2004-04-28
This book provides unusual insight not only on the Battle of Little Bighorn, but also on the culture of the Crow Indians. It's very fact-filled and interesting. For all those who think that they understand everything that went on at the battle of Little Big Horn, and for those who are intriqued by the Crow Indians and their alliance with the U.S. military, this book is an exceptional read.
Very good.......1999-06-07
This book challenges the white male patriarchal version of events, but perhaps does not do so to a sufficient extent. However, this book is a valuable effort; highly recommended.
Full, informative discussion of the Little Big Horn Battle.......1998-08-02
This well researched and fact based exploration of the Little Big Horn Battle presents alternative ways of understanding the event and its place in American history. The account is based on oral histories of the five Crow who were with Custer that day.

Run for life.......2005-07-26
Chester Himes's hard-hitting thriller is all about racism.
'Fat Sam had never realized that the thought of Negroes could send a white man out his head ... this sight of violence unleashed because of race.'
'I'm not supposed to talk about it because he's white and it might prejudice the civil rights movement.'
The main theme of this novel is also an affair of discrimination: 'He's a white detective and I'm just a poor colored porter'; and, ' "the true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government" being a legend'.
Chester Himes portraits New York as a scary city for non-whites: 'a few black and brown faces everywhere ... wondered how many of them were scared too.'
'This was a violent city, these were violent people.' The City is 'not for thinkers, it's for stinkers'.
But the survivor of a shooting raid will not shut his mouth, 'not as long as I am black.'
The novel begins with viciously scary scenes, but from the middle on, it becomes rather mainstream with its (not very probable) sex scenes and unsurprising interrogations. It ends on a rather disappointing soft note.
A worth-while read.
Tough look at racism.......2002-05-08
Here's a tough crime novel by Chester Himes without Coffin Ed Johnson and Gravedigger Jones that takes an uncompromising look at American racism in New York City. Though published in 1966, it has a strong '50s feel that comes through in the language and the cultural references both.
Himes' dialogue and language can be occasionally stilted, but there are chase scenes here that will make you sit up and take notice, and the focus on black-white relations is especially good. It's the story of a white cop who accidentally on purpose shoots to death two black 'porters' (workers who unload trucks for a restaurant) and then goes after a third, Jimmy, who manages to survive the cop's onslaught.
The depiction of the cop as sometimes conflicted by his actions is well done and his liaison with Jimmy's black girlfriend is strong stuff indeed. There's a somewhat uneasy mix here, though, of academic and street thinking. Jimmy is studying at Columbia University and shows it in his speech, but when other characters speak, it sometimes sounds like they're struggling to catch up to Jimmy's psychology and often it doesn't feel right.
Nevertheless, what makes this compelling is, as mentioned, the focus on race relations and racism, the chase scenes, and the cop's wacked psychology.
An interesting read.
A suspense-filled chase through 1950's Harlem........1997-05-10
A murderous racist cop trying to cover up his
drunken mistakes and a black truck driver who's
the only surviving witness have a suspense-filled
chase through Harlem. Not always believable, but
always thrilling. A good introduction to the hard-
boiled fiction of Chester Himes, and a piercing
look into the sources of racism.

Decent, but "Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion" is better.......2006-04-07
I think the phrase, lost in translation, applies to this book. I waited months for it to be sent after I pre-ordered it. It was available in Europe at the beginning of the year, but that's ok, they were probably translating it. Unfortunately, it "feels" very translated, if that makes sense.
While I appreciate the insight from Ronchi because she was someone who was very close to Pantani and obviously tried to help him, at times I felt like it was her just justifying her actions to the world with a series of choppy responses to criticisms that were made about her part in his life.
My feeling at the end of the book; it rambled, that's how I felt. BUT, there was no way I was not going to buy this book because as a cycling fan, Pantani was one of the unique talents from the recent batch. If only he could have straightened himself out, he would have given Lance some serious competition in the mountains during his other tour wins. This guy won 2 major stage races in 1998, the Giro and the Tour de France, beating Julich, Ulrich and other prominent riders at the time. He was on course to do it again in 1999, but a test registered a high Hemocrit level (same thing we are seeing today with top stars)the night before his Giro win. It really was all down hill from there.
On a side note, I seriously wonder about these tests. One has to ask why would someone at the top of their game risk cheating when they know they are in the most highly tested sport in the world. I am thinking about Tyler Hamilton and Roberto Heras. Barry Bonds admits to steroid use but is still in baseball? Cyclists take a substance that is used for treating Anemia and they are vilified. (back off my soap box)
The book by John Wilcockson, Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion was much better written, researched, put together, etc. It is a different perspective, that of a reporter, but this guy has been on the cycling scene forever, knows all the big names personally and just has a real historical perspective about him. His book on following Lance in his tour victory, stage by stage, 23 days in July was also outstanding.

Eugene Chadbourne will always be remembered for his sonic jazz experiments on stringed instruments (mainly electric guitar, sometimes banjo), that trademark electric rake of his, and his campy humor. (He's also the only musician playing today able to cover Nick Drake's melancholic "The Thoughts of Mary Jane" and turn it into an extended improvisation that borders on humorous.) I Hate the Man Who Runs This Bar!, Chadbourne's guidebook for fellow musicians, is nearly as funny, eccentric, and effective as the artist's vast musical output. Chadbourne describes his follies with various labels; offers inspirational advice on packaging, publishing, and getting gigs; and tries to shatter the myths of working for a major record label. Common sense reigns supreme, as does a DIY sensibility. Subtitled "The Survival Guide for Real Musicians," the book offers great insight into one of modern music's best minds and should provide plenty to think about for anyone serious about his or her music. Chadbourne's suggestions may not make your band famous, but they may make it infamous--a career choice that's worked for Chadbourne since the mid '70s. --Jason Verlinde
Book Description
In I Hate the Man Who Runs This Bar, Eugene Chadbourne discusses his experiences in his 20+ year career as an independent musician. No hype, no fluff, this essential guide is for real musicians who have decided to make a living out of doing what they love: playing music!
Customer Reviews:
Best book on the music biz i ever read.......2005-08-13
If you think there's actually a book that tells you how to be a star, you're a fool. if you think reading some book will tell you how to write hit songs, get your hair to look good and how to get an honest manager, you're a bigger fool. Homer Simpson said to his daughter "Here's the first rule about the music business. Don't trust anyone in the music business" and Hunter Thompson said (this is pretty close)'the music business is a long plastic hallway populated by pimps and thieves where good men die. there's also a downside.' AM I BEING TOO CYNICAL FOR YOU? This is a GREAT book. For those of us who have lived/live this life, it's hilarious. Should be mandatory reading for all 18 year olds who think their band is going to hit it big. no matter whether you make it to the top or stay at the bottom you WILL encounter the situations and people described in this book. Lively, good writing style. THANKS EUGENE
I Love This Book.......2005-06-06
I am a professional musician (note that I did not say "full time"), and this is my very favorite of all the books I own about the music business. This book inspires me when I'm happy to be a musician, encourages me when I feel like quitting music forever, makes me want to be a better musician, and makes me feel like I'm just as good as I need to be to just get out there and PLAY, already.
In short, I love this book. I would recommend it not just for musicians but for anyone who is engaged in a creative pursuit, knowing full well that it will never make him or her rich and famous - and that that's a GOOD thing.
If stardom is your goal, then skip this book.......1999-03-22
If you're seeking tips to become a commercial success in the music business, keep looking. You won't find anything like that here. If you want to read a clever, witty book that helps you cope with the pitfalls, look no further.
This book is completely amazing for all free-thinkers........1998-10-21
Mr. Chadbourne's book will scare many young musicians into to becoming record producers and it will inspire heartier souls into pursuing the career they have always wanted, that is, being a musician. This book contains stories of both fact and fiction that deal with different types of musicians in the wierd kinds of situations that musicians find themselves in. Especially insightful are the chapters that deal with the regular folk: Understanding the Non-Creative Mind, Chicken Public vs. the Avant-Garde, and True Happiness: The Flawed System That Destroys Weaker Minds. Mr. Chadbourne's insight on how to make a living playing music that nobody wants to hear is invaluble to musicians of all persuasions. This book should be in every gig bag of every music student in every school!
Oh, so that's how it works..........1998-08-11
You are not alone (sitting there in the darkness ... by yourself ... without anybody else ... misunderstood and maligned and malingering... not knowing where to turn or who to turn to ...) because Mr. Eugene Chadbourne is right there with you to show you the way!
No, he won't help you make a living by making music - but he'll explain why you aren't making a living. He won't stop you from being double-booked and left with no money in Our Town, Earth, Universe - but he'll help you deal with it (and ensure you turn it into a good road warrior story for your friends).
This is not the music publishing/A&R bible that will list every exec's name and phone number - those are out of date before they're printed. It's more like a fake book actually comprised of songs you would want to fake.
I wouldn't consider myself a real musician because I still rely on THE MAN to give me a paycheck. But this is Extremely well-written and Entertaining and informative and hearten! ing and concise. (Though I have to say that it's a bit pricey - but that's not a consideration when reviewing fine literature, is it?). For anyone who has/wants to record something or has/wants to perform in public - check this book out!
