Benjamin Franklin once said, "In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes. At least now, thanks to the internet, death doesn't have to be as expensive.

According to AARP, the average funeral in the United States can easily reach $10,000 once a burial plot, flowers and other costs are included.

Educated consumers are no longer in the dark about how the funeral industry works. Big conglomerates are mercilessly buying up family-operated homes with their eyes solely on the bottom-line. Caskets alone average a 600% mark up. They may be the last example of a legal monopoly left in the United States. Mourners are literally gauged, as they haven't the time or presence of mind to comparison shop.

It has always been tradition to call upon the neighborhood funeral parlor, cemetery or monument dealer when a loved-one passes. But, due to the internet, that traditional is starting to change.

MonumentsInStone is the sister company of Interstate Granite, a family-owned, monument manufacturer that has been in business in the Atlanta area since 1916. They have recently launched a website, offering granite headstones, bronze markers and crematory products at a fraction of their retail price. "We have been there." Say the owner, Robert Womac. "And, we want to right an industry-wide wrong."

MonumentsInStone supplies headstones and memorials directly to the consumer. Although cemeteries might not like this, they have to, by law, accept a stone from an outside source. The savings have been a blessing for many customers.

The Funeral Consumers Alliance has many tips that should be followed when planning a funeral. They told us that savvy consumers need to shop around for a grave marker or monument. The Better Business Bureau also warns to resist high-priced sales pitches from funeral industry vendors. They should treat you with compassion; not pressure you.

Perhaps, asking a friend or neighbor to work the phones or search the net would be a good idea. Even a check on Ebay has produced a number of beautiful choices. I found an elegant, Granite Companion Monument for a third of the price my funeral parlor was pitching. A Tombstone on Ebay? I emailed the highest bidder to find out why. "I'm sorry," He told me. " I see no reason to pay top dollar because of some outdated

I purchased a copy of this book for my elderly mother who has been talking about planning ahead for her own funeral. This book is loaded with information about funerals and funeral homes, many things that we were unfamiliar with. In particular, she liked the detailed appendix with all those biblical phrases and the facts about different flowers. I liked the forms in the back of the book that helped her to become organized and share information with me, that I never would have known about. An excellent resource for anybody who wants to preplan a funeral themselves.

If you are looking for a good, tear-jerking story that makes you care about the characters, you will need to look elsewhere. "She Died Too Young" features perfect characters that are miserable because they all need organ transplants to live. Both reach a critical stage, and surprise! there's only one set of organs! So one of the two has to die. And of course, there are a couple of flawless, gorgeous guys waiting around for the girls. Please don't waste your time or money on this book--save a tree.

5 out of 5 stars Death of Young Girl.......2004-12-16

This Book is called She Died Too Young. It was written by Lurlene McDaniel. This girl named Chelsea James needs a heart transplant. She goes to stay with her friend Katie's house waiting for the news for the donor. Chelsea and Katie met at a place called Jenny House and they spent a wonderful sommer together. Chelsea goes to a place where they talk about the way they feel. Chelsea made a new friend named Jillian. She was really nice. Jillian invited her to her house. She and Katie was picked up in a limo to go to her house and they thought that was pretty cool. This is a fantastic book and it made me think that I need to be thankful for what I have because I could end up like her someday. I think that the theme is most represented in this book because you learn a lesson a bout life when you put yourself in Chelsea's shoes and you find out that you may not have a chance to survive. You need to know that life isn't always fair. If you like Relistic Fiction books than I recommend this book for you to read. I gave this book five stars because this book will touch your heart in certain ways.

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2004-12-14

I first read this book in 1994 when I was 10 years old. I got it from the book fair and was fascinated by all things medical. It ended up touching me so much and I continue to read Lurlene Mcdaniel books at 21. I re-read "She died too young" this summer and it can still make me cry. The friendship of Jillian and Chelsea is something we all need. I very much recommend this book..It'll really make you appreciate your own friends.

By reading some of the other reviews for this book, I realize that many of them are negative. They imediatly turn you off from the book. I sopose there are some people who do not like them, but please read the book for yourself and then decide. Do not let the negative reviews influence you. The books are inspiring, touching, and simply amazing.
This praticular book is about two friends fighting for their lives because of failing hearts. When both are called into the hospital, only one will be choosen to recieve the heart that is being donated. Booth friends want the heart to be given to eachother, but it will only be given to one, and the other will die.
I have read almost all her other books, and I have never gotten bored, or thought the plot was the same, or the book was predictable. Please try her books before you decide you don't like them, and don't let negative reviews influence you're desision. You'll find her books are truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2001-12-03

Another addition to the story of friends Lacey, Chelsea, Amanda, Jillian and Katie, its a must-read. Chelsea is on the beeper for a heart transplant, and staying with Katie's family. Katie's success with a heart transplant gives Chelsea hope, but after living with a heart disease her entire life, Chelsea is getting sicker each day. At a class for hopeful tranplant receipiants, Chelsea meets Jillian, a sassy, up-beat red-head with a Texan twang and a rich father. Jillian is not only in need of a heart, but a 'pair of lungs.' Meg Finn has led a miserable life. First, her mum died, saddling her with a useless, nasty stepfather. Then, angry and alone, Meg found herself committing acts of petty crime with dim-witted hood Belch Brennan. Finally, just as she was about to go straight to honor her sainted mum's memory, Belch went and got them both killed as they attempted to rob crabby old Lowrie McCall. And if that wasn't bad enough, now St. Peter and Beelzebub can't decide which way Meg is supposed to go. She is one in a million: a soul perfectly balanced between good and evil. Now Meg's got to go back and somehow tip the scales UP--the further, the better! To earn her wings, Meg's been assigned to help the last person she tried to hurt (Lowrie McCall) who has a wish list of wrong choices that he wants to make right. But Beelzebub can't stand the thought of a bad soul going good. So he sends back the soul of powerfully stupid Belch, (who went straight down without stopping) to muck things up for Meg and Lowrie. But Meg's got smarts on her side and more than just a few tricks up her insubstantial sleeve...

At times, best-selling author Eoin Colfer's Wish List reads like a head-on collision between Dawson's Creek and Touched by an Angel. But rabid fans of the Artemis Fowl books won't notice or care. This black comedy is sure to make every fantasy-reading teen's Wish List. --Jennifer Hubert

3 out of 5 stars Da Bestest Book eva (sept the Halo series).......2007-03-01

The Wish List by Eion Colfer is a good book to read if you ever get the chance. It is about a girl named Meg Finn and her life. Cast out of her home after her mother's death by her lazy, drunken, abusive stepfather, she is now nothing more than a troublemaker. After her last stunt finding a home is the last thing on her list of troubles. Meg and her partner in crime Belch try to rob an old man by the name of Lowrie McCall. In a tragic accident she gets sent to the sprit world only to be sent back to help the very man she tried to rob. Why? Because her good and evil deeds are dead even. If you want to find out what happens you will have to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Wish List.......2007-01-08

With as many good deeds as she has bad deeds Meg Finn isn't sent to either Heaven or Hell she is sent back to Earth! Meg has to pay her friend Belch back for using his camcorder by being an assistant to him robbing an old man named Lowrie's house. When they leave the house, Meg goes to find help because Belch's dog attacked Lowrie when he uncovered that the kids were in his house. Then Belch gets angry and decides to fire off the gun in the air to scare her, his objective fails because they are in too close of range, so the utter shatters all over the place and ends up killing them both. Belch and his dog are sent to Hell immediately. Meg would've been there too, but because she had attempted to help Lowrie it evened out her good and bad columns, so after a period of re-calculations, she was sent back to Earth to Mr. Lorwie's house to help him grant his last four wishes before his death. During her journey, Belch works for the Devil and tries to stop her from helping Lowrie complete his wishes. The first two wishes, kissing an old friend and kicking a ball in Croke Park, are completed with semi-ease. Then his third wish, to punch an old friend in the face is replaced by one of Meg's wishes to do that to her stepfather. His fourth wish to spit over the Cliffs of Moher ends up ebing able to happen because Meg used one of the two stones that she was given when she first died that were able to add an extra few hours on to a person's life to Lowrie and her stepfather. Those ended up being her final two tasks that added to her being able to go to heaven! I would recommend this book to anyone because it has more than one type of character, that are all different ages and easy to relate to. Also to anyone who just enjoys a "feel-good" type of book that keeps you finding out things as you go.

The author makes this book interesting because he creates all different types of characters. Characters in this book such as Beelzebub and Myishi were workers for the devil. Also when Belch dies he and his dog formed together and became a thing that had qualities of both. Meg, one of the main characters, was also special because she was a sprit and could put herself in other people and objects to be able to hear their thoughts and basically could possess them .

This book hints you certain things as you read but you don't find out everything at once. Such as the one of the main problems in the story , what Meg's stepfather really did to her and what she did to him in return. You find out in the beginning that Meg's mother died and her stepfather did something to her, but you never find out what it is until Meg and Lowrie make a deal. You find out that he had hit her mother and after that hit her and took her mother's engagement ring that she had gave to Meg and sold it for a big screened television. So in return Meg broke his most prized possesion, the televison, and exposed him by recording all of his lazy ways on camcorder and showing it to his friends at the NPFA. And you also find out that because she had borrowed the camera from Belch he wanted her to be an accessory in his robbery, which is why she ended up dying in the first place, but you don't kind that out until close to the end.

The Wish List makes you feel good because of everything that they overcome. One thing that made you feel good was the fact that Meg retaliated against her step-father and ended up making him alone and miserable in the end. Another thing was that Meg made it to heaven with her mother because throughout the book she would always bring up her "mam" and how things used to be when she was there. Lastly, the fact that Old Man Lowrie ended up happy and completed many of his lifetime wishes and made it into heaven in the end was really great.

If you enjoy a "feel-good" type of book that keeps you finding out things as you go with different types of characters this is an excellent book for you to read. This was a very good book because I showed that you do have second chances in life. I think that it shows that you why the the cover is how it is because some of the letters have elements of Heaven and Hell in them and it all comes down to the "Wish List" which is the title.

4 out of 5 stars Heavenly Blue or Fiery Red???.......2007-01-08

Heaven or Hell?, Good or Bad?, Pearlies or Pit?, Hevenly blue or Fiery red?, Meg Fin is a fourteen year old girl who is stuck in the middle of the tunnel after a event that costed her life. She is a rebelious teeneger who ran away from her abusive stepdad after she humiliated him and her mother is dead. She and her partner in crime, Belch or at the same time enimies were robbing an old man by the name of Lowrie McCall when Meg punked out. This led into Belchs dog breaking Lowries leg and belch shooting at a gas tank that killed him, Meg, and his dog. Now Megs aura is as purple as a grape, but wait, this a problem. Niether will she go to heaven or hell. The only way to solve this problem is to send her spirit floating back to Earth to help Lowie complet a wish list, things he wants to fuffil in life that he never got to do, the problem is that neither Meg or Lowrie have alot of time left on Earth and the Devil has sent Belch to stop her from doing anything good. Gods assistant saint Peter and the Devils asisstant Beelzebub both want her on their end of the tunnel. Meg helps Lowrie complete his list and helps him and her both learn something about life and she also helps her step dad live. When all her enegy is out she is sent back to the tunnel with an aura as blue as the sky and with that goes to heaven were she is reunited with her mother atlast. Im usaully not in to fantasy books at all, but this book was good. I recoomend it to people in grades 7-10 or any one who enjoys books by Eoin Colfer, the author of Artemis Fowl. This book was full of comedy, it teaches you something, and the characters were well understood.

This book is full of funny lines thats will have you laughing through the entire story. Mostly filled with conversation between Gods assistant Saint Peter and the Devils assistant Beelzebub. They are emimies, but have understanding for each other being that their jibv is the same. When they have a problem they are quick to call each other although most of the time it ends up with beelbebub telling a lie being that he is a demon and all. Other things that are comecal are the tunnels versions of some of the latest technology.

The Wish List has a very good plot. After reading this book you would have been entertained and have learned something valuable. It teaches you to do everything you want in life and dont let anything stop you a long the way. It also teaches to do the right thing in life beacause most of the time their are no second chances. Luckily Megg had another chance to go back on Earth and prove that she was a good person.

The author did a wonderful job my making the characters as real as possible. While reading the book I had a well understanding of each character, as well as a good decription. I felt as if I were in the story too because when they were doing something I had a clear picture and understood everything they were doing.

Wow, what a good fantasy book. Never have I read a fantasy book were I was able to really have a clear understanding about what was going on through the whole story. At the same time it was funy too so I was not bored at all. So if you are in the grade levels of 7-10 and like books such as Artemis Fowl then The Wish List would be a good book for you to try reading. Its filled with comedy, a good character development, and it cann teach you something along the way.

4 out of 5 stars Meg, the nasty girl.......2006-11-22

The Wish List, by Eion Cofler, is a book in which Meg's mom dies and is stuck with a angry Step-dad. This ain't your normal fairy tale, Meg dies and she is too bad for Heaven and Hell. She is sent back to earth to help an old man named Lowire. She has to grant his wishes. You still think this is your normal fariy tale, just read it to find out.

4 out of 5 stars The Wish List.......2006-11-09

The Wish List is about a girl named Meg who dies and is too good for not go to heaven and too bad hell. She gets sent back to earth so she can help and old man she sinned against complete his last wishes before he too dies. This deed should get her into heaven.
One good part in the book is when they flash back to when Meg was alive and they describe her mean stepdad. Meg's mother was dead so she had to live with him. He was lazy and had no right to do some of the things he did, like sell Megs momms' ring, the only thing Meg had of her moms', to buy a new TV.
I liked the book at some points. It can be funny, and it has a good story line. Also, it is an easy read and can be done by just about anyone in about a week. Some parts of the book i did not like though. Sometimes it got very boring because the scenes with the devil and anyone accosiated with hell were only talking and most of the things they said i couldn't follow. I guess you have to know a little bit about religion to read it, but not so much. Overall the book was pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, a rare masterpiece.......2006-07-05

This book set me on fire when I first read it. Along with that other masterwork "Marketing Mistakes" this gem of a book is a great antidote to the hype and testosterone that marketing generates. A breath of common sense.

Another great book from Clancy et al. I'd recommend a full set of their books to anyone, not a dud among them. For more of a similar vein try:

    1 out of 5 stars Useless D'uh type points..........2005-11-23

Perhaps this book was good 10 years ago but not in 2005. I read the first few chapters and after several hours of going through the so-called "myths" I just had enough...
Most points they call "myths" are common knowledge to anyone in business or marketing fields (At least NOW).
Again, I am not sure how the situation was 10 years ago but now it is not worth the paper it is printed on.
Many better books are out there so don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars A straight forward and useful marketing resource.......1999-09-16

As a business consultant, one of the most important things I can do for my clients is to help them overcome their "time honored traditions". While you might think that the need to call in outside consultants is indicative of management's recognition that the current way of doing things isn't working any more, quite often the opposite is true. Organizational inertia, especially in the area of marketing, is often difficult to overcome. This book has helped me countless times in assisting organizations in overcoming "old thinking" and in moving their marketing strategies forward. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me - adamleft@webspan.net.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books written about marketing. A gem!.......1997-05-08

Not only is it easy to read, but it's shocking in its ability to zero in on what's wrong with the marketing business. A must read! For those who want more detail, try reading their first collaborative effort, The Marketing Revolution. Bottom line--if you buy no other marketing book, buy one of these two books. They are Marketing Bibles with enormous power. Why? Because they lay out in excrutiating detail how marketeers have been relying on well-worn mths to conduct business--myths that have no basis in fact. Thus, is it any wonder that so many marketing efforts either don't work or when they do work can't be explained. I should know. Prior to reading these books, I fell for the same myths. Not any more, thanks to authors Clancy and Shulman. Gene Pinder Director of Marketing U.S. SPACE CAMP

    Book Description

In the summer of 1974 the movie Death Wish stunned audiences with its powerful story of an enraged businessman who hits the streets with a handgun to avenge the brutal violation of his wife and daughter. The film packed theaters with cheering moviegoers, became one of the highest-grossing and most controversial movies of the year, and turned star Charles Bronson into the hottest screen icon in the world.

Over the next twenty years, four increasingly-violent sequels delivered thrills to a growing legion of fans and solidified the legend of Charles Bronson.

Now, for the first time, Death Wish fanatics, Bronson cultists, and action movie lovers will discover fascinating information about the series. In exclusive comments, director Michael Winner, actor Kevyn Major Howard, novelist Brian Garfield, and many others reveal what it was like to work on the Death Wish movies with one of the most charismatic and elusive stars of all time.

Covering every aspect of all five movies (including unused casting suggestions, deleted scenes and alternate cuts) and loaded with rare advertising artwork, Bronson's Loose!: The Making of the “Death Wish” Films tells the compelling, untold story behind the most explosive action series in film history.

    5 out of 5 stars Bronson's Back!.......2007-03-28

This is a great book! There aren't many pages in this book, but it is full of very interesting information about Charles Bronson and the Death Wish films. It's also very easy to read. I'm a big fan of Charles Bronson, but I didn't know a lot about his personal life until I read this book. After reading this book, I have even more respect for Bronson and it was fun learning all the behind the scenes facts about the films. The first film was the best, but any movie Charles Bronson is in is much better than today's so called "big stars". Bronson was a real movie star. I highly recommend this fun and easy to read book!

5 out of 5 stars TREAT FOR BRONSON FANS.......2006-12-19

A definite treat for the people who paid to watch
    Charles Bronson shoot creeps.
Talbot's 161-page book gives us the best, and maybe
the only, history of the making of these cult films we're
    likely to get.
It was put together using information from 10
interviews the author conducted between 2004 and 2005.
Among those interviewed were Michael Winner, director of
the first three entries, Brian Garfield, author of the original
novel, and Kevyn Major Howard, the guy who played
"Stomper," a punk with the cross hanging around his neck
    in"Death Wish II."
I came across a mention of it on a "Death Wish" fan
site on the Internet, then ordered it from Amazon.com. Glad
I did. This thing took me back in time.
I flashed back to the first time I saw the original. It was
on an RCA SelectaVision CED Video Disc in 1981. A
picture of the back of that disc is on page 29.
The time I saw "Death Wish II" in the movies, I'll never
forget. Something happened in that film, a strange
marriage of sorts. The image of Charles Bronson's
Paul Kersey dressed down Goodwill style, dinky and all,
stalking the streets to a hellish Jimmy Page grind. Movie
magic. Made hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
I've always wondered about the behind the scenes
stories, how Bronson felt about these films, how directors
and actors felt working with Bronson, how the actors
managed to shoot those crazy rape scenes, etc.
This book answered a lot of my questions. I sat down
with it every night for a week, glued to it.
Authors who write books about movies sometimes
provide reviews, or strongly suggest which films they
prefered over others. It seems Talbot's a big fan of the
original "Death Wish." The second best directed, he
said, was number four, "The Crackdown."
Personally, I was always a big fan of parts 2 and 3.
But Talbot tries to do justice to every entry, and for
that I salute him. This book made me nastalgic, made me
remember how much I liked watching Paul Kersey dish
    out his brand of justice.
"You believe in Jesus...Well you're gonna meet 'em."
    BLAM! BLAM!
By the way, there's an intro by Andrew Stevens, an
actor who worked with Bronson in "Death Hunt (1981)"
and "10 to Midnight (1983)." I remember Stevens from
his performance as the antagonist from "The Seduction
    (1982)."

4 out of 5 stars Our 'wish' has been granted.......2006-07-31

Of the 150 motion picture and television appearances by Charles Bronson, none have gained more cult support than the five-installment 'Death Wish' series, a fact that inspired Paul Talbot to research the entire history of its productions. Written for Bronson and action film enthusiasts, 'Bronson's Loose!: The Making of the Death Wish Films' covers two decades of Paul Kersey lore, answering many of the questions that fans have asked for years.

Talbot, an independent filmmaker and film historian, gives the complete timeline of five movies inspired by Brian Garfield's 1972 vigilante novel that only had modest success in bookstores. Using publicity materials, contemporary news articles, and personal interviews with members of the 'Death Wish' staff, 'Bronson's Loose!' gives detailed and respectful accounts of how Garfield's concept became a long-lasting B-movie franchise, starting with its original 1974 production that enthralled audiences until the 1993 making of 'Death Wish 5: The Face of Death,' Charles Bronson's final motion picture credit.

This 161-page book offers an intriguing foreword by Andrew Stevens, who played roles in two motion pictures with Bronson, 'Death Hunt' (1981) and '10 to Midnight' (1983); his thoughts shed valuable light on the departed actor's mystique. Talbot's own history is well-written and easily approachable, focusing on interviews with director Michael Winner, late producer Bobby Roberts, actor Kevyn Major Howard, screenwriter Gail Morgan Hickman, and others. 'Bronson's Loose!' is also packed with supplements, including a 'Death Wish' filmography, soundtrack listing, and bibliography. Images of publicity materials and home video covers are included, which give further life to the saga (although in black and white).

The 'Death Wish' series has been made available on DVD, which should renew interest in Bronson's film legacy. Talbot's book, published by iUniverse, is an informative companion to the five movies besides recalling Bronson in a more human light and giving an offbeat portrait of Hollywood filmmaking. It is highly recommended for lovers of the action genre, especially Paul Kersey enthusiasts.

    4 out of 5 stars If you're A Death Wish/Bronson Fan - Heaven!.......2006-07-01

First thing's first - this is the mother of all 'niche' books. But if, like myself, you have a childish glee at Charles Bronson/80s Action B-movies-and specifically the Death Wish flicks then this is essential! Packed full of great insights into the saga, with some juicy behind the scenes gossip and a whole bunch of rare facts and trivia. This is a beautifully researched book, written with reverence for the subject while being realistic about the products. I hope that the author turns his hand to more niche movie groups as the style is accessable, fun but always informative and to the point. The Death Wish films hold a special place in the hearts of 80s VHS B-Movie fans and it's great to see them celebrated. As most of the participants are now sadly dead, there is never likely to be a documentary or special edition DVD set of these fun and funky flix, so this book is really is the behind the scenes be all and end all for fans of the series. Seriously, if this is a subject matter you have interest in you're gonna love this!

In the process of grieving for the sudden lost of a loved one, this book caught my eye and made me hopeful that the inevitable passing of future family and friends, and myself, may not be so difficult on the ones left behind.
The author somehow makes a simple read out of a taboo subject. Educational, sometimes witty, and straight to the point, this book covers everything you need to know about planning how you would like to be remembered and what you would like happen when your time is up. Good for the young and old alike. A great gift for those that you love.

We all know of stories where a loved one passes on and no one can speak to their wishes. Wouldn't it be easier to tell our loved ones what we would like? This book is the tool! It's an easy to fill out journal that covers a variety of areas including your life, how you envision your final service and how to plan ahead. Even though it's a heavy topic the book takes a serious but light look at important issues. Do your loved ones a favor and let them know your wishes using this book!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have .... Must Read ....... Must Share !!.......2007-02-21

I am not one to go on and on about how things can and should be done. Everyone has their own way through life, but this book is a great way to take stock of where you are in life and how you would want your life and death to be remembered and handled by those who you are leaving behind.

Why did I buy my first copy? Several of my good friends have lost their parents and grandparents in the past 12 months, and were really left numb while they confronted the last days and moments without any ideas of what do to do or say. After seeing and reading through this book in a local bookstore, I ordered 10 copies to share with them and a few others that are facing similar situations now.

I am already getting positive feedback from a friend who lost his dad last summer, ("I wish I had this 9 months ago."). I know my other friends aren't ready for this, or may be reluctant to face it, but I know when I look at how an unplanned death is handled it can be brutal and unforgiving; I will not leave that burden with my wife, child or parent. (Think about the mess going on with Anna Nicole Smith, if you doubt how tragic it can be. What is her daughter going to know about her mother's wishes for her life? NOTHING!)

I would recommend getting a copy for you and your loved ones. Especially for those you don't want to make the tough decisions for. Like to be left on life support or not; cremated -vs- buried; what to do with their kids, belongings and memories; who or what was your greatest loves and memories?

Since taxes and death are inevitable, why not plan to make your loved one's memories good ones, not painful second guesses?

BTW, it is a very good read, so don't be afraid you are sending a "Death Wish" to your friends or coworkers. You are giving them a little bit of love and food for thought!

Recipient of an Honourable Mention in the 2001 God Uses Ink Contest!Patrick is dying a slow, agonizing death. He wants his friend, Dr. Ron Grey, to help him--but not to get better. Instead, Patrick wants Ron to help him end his suffering by ending his life. This is the premise of a story that Paul Chamberlain employs to reveal the ethical and emotional complexities of a movement that is gaining supporters daily. It is a story that sends Ron Grey on a difficult journey across a continent and through a minefield of conflicting ideas and values.Should people have a legal right to choose the time of their death? Can adequate safeguards be employed to protect the public from potential abuses of physician-assisted suicide laws? What does it mean for people to die with dignity? Will people feel an obligation not to burden their families with their prolonged illness? What has been the experience in the Netherlands, which has had a physician-assisted suicide law for over twenty-five years? What about the possibility of misdiagnosis? Is there a legitimate public interest in what appears to be a purely private act? Can morality be legislated at all?Paul Chamberlain considers all of these vital issues clearly and carefully. Yet as we move through the legal, political, medical and ethical questions, he also helps us to see the personal side of these topics played out in the context of a caring family and a deep friendship. Here is a timely and helpful book on one of the most controversial concerns of our day.

2 out of 5 stars Just Give Me The Notes!.......2003-05-09

That's right, the author of this book either thinks that his readers are so stupid that they will not understand the blatant points and arguments his one-dimensional characters debate that he puts notes in the margins. As well, the prose style is so mundane that the notes are actually more exciting. He highlights the key arguments of PAS (Physician Assisted Suicide) but closes with the strongest arguments against and the strongest arguments for, stacking the deck against PAS. A biased book from a publisher that is biased (the publisher is a Christian publisher, a traditional Christian publisher, thus opposed to PAS).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction from a Christian Perspective.......2001-09-02

Paul Chamberlain has certainly provided us with an engaging and instructive volume on euthanasia. Couched in a fictional narrative, Chamberlain's plot walks us throught the relational, philosophical, medicinal, and legal dynamics of euthanasia. And though the narrative is fictional, Chamberlain points the reader to some of the better literature on the subject in his endnotes.

I seldom read a book cover-to-cover, but Chamberlain's narrative caught me and held me captive until I finished the book. But I must warn you, as someone still working his way through all the attendant issues (religious, social, philosophical and emotional), the first half of the book provides an emotionally swaying presentation of the case for physician-assisted suicide. While reading it, I kept wondering "What I would do -- if I was the one dying, or if I was the one asked to help a friend die?"

The second half of the book engages the many arguments in favor of euthanasia in a thoughtful, but never shallow, fashion. Here one will encounter a real struggle over suffering -- but viewed from the perspective of one informed by the facts, engaged in the drama, and influenced by sound religious, philosophical and social principles.

I enthusiastically recommend this book as an introduction to the subject by an author well-informed in all the facets of the issue. For more information, I would recommend the reader visit The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity (www.cbhd.org).

4 out of 5 stars Final Wishes - How About You?.......2000-09-27

Dr. Chamberlain plunges us into an ethical dilemma that is hotly debated around the country today. Physician assisted suicide has been considered in many states and legalized in Oregon. This book takes us to a probable state senatorial debate where the arguments for and against physician assisted suicide are presented. The debate boils in the senate while two friends, Dr. Ron and Dr. Pat, meet. Patrick is dying and Ron has to decide if he should assist in his friend's death. The reader's eyes are opened by a trip through a palliative care ward. The debate in the Senate shows how an issue can be molded and sculpted to look attractive. The author's credentials may help one to see which way the decision must go but in all fairness I leave the answer to the reader. The bigger question is how we are affected by the tale and what would we do?

    5 out of 5 stars A Tear Jerker.......2006-05-18

This story has to be on of the best stories in the entire One Last Wish series. It shows the hardships that teens that have Cystic Fibrosis have to endure daily. Kara Fischer, a girl with C.F., shows what she goes through every day with this disease, and how it affects her every day life. She deals with the same things we deal with and more; and it shows how determined she is to have a normal life. When she falls in love with Eric, and he finds out about her C.F., I was surprised to see what he did. This book is a heart-wrenching story that brought a tear to my eye while reading it. It is an amazing book with a great truth behind it. Showing all of the things that happen to the people suffering from the disease, in using a child for the main character, makes you relate to the character even more; whether you have the disease or not.
Lurlene McDaniel is an amazing author who does her research to make the story even greater. Knowing the facts about what is actually happening and putting it down with a plot and characters, teaches you about the disease or problem while keeping you interested. The powerful way she writes makes you stay intrigued, and makes you want to keep turning the pages to see what happens.
You want to know whether they are going to go out with someone or if they are going to get sick again. You begin to become that person and can feel what they are feeling, and can hear the voices of the other characters talking to you. You understand what is going on in their minds and what is in their hearts. Their feelings become yours; you cry when they cry, you feel the touch they feel, and you hear the words they hear. When you cry with them, you cry on both the inside and the outside as well. Your heart and eyes fill with tears and you just can't help but cry from both parts of you. You are them.

A Time to Die is a fiction story based on a young lady who has cystic fibrosis. Everyday she goes through therapy to help her breathe. She meets a boy named Vince, who also has cystic fibrosis. Vince helps Kara through the tough times, when Kara really needs someone by her side. They are both in and out of the hospital and are struggling to try to survive.
Lurlene McDaniel really showed in great detail the affects cystic fibrosis could have on a person's life. It is a wonderful book to read, especially if you do not know much about cystic fibrosis. Kara falls for a boy, which makes the book more interesting, because she does not want him to be turned off by the cystic fibrosis she has.
A Time to Die is a book you could not live without reading. This book left me with wanting to find more about cystic fibrosis and the book made me want to read more of Lurlene McDaniel's books.

I really liked this book.I couldn't stop reading it.I realized how much I take life for granted. It is really sad to think about how much we take everything for granted. This book helped me.I really think it can help others be more appreciative.

5 out of 5 stars It Brought a Tear to my Eye.......2002-06-11

A Time to Die has to be my favourite book in the OWL series. Kara and Vince's struggle to live is very inspiring and I admire them both for their courage and determination. Because I, along with my brother, am a victim of CF, I was glad to see someone trying to make the world more aware of this disease. I could really relate to Kara and Vince and found their thoughts and feeling about their disease to be similar to my own. This book is very well written with interesting characters and plot twists. This book brought a definite tear to my eye.

5 out of 5 stars Based upon sound psychology.......2003-01-11

Diane O'Quinn Burke's gentle duotone illustrations perfectly underscore Pat Palmer's deftly written and gentle "I Wish I Could Hold Your Hand...": A Child's Guide To Grief And Loss. Based upon sound psychology with respect to the grieving process in children, this sensitive and exceptional well written story will significantly assist a young child to identify their feeling arising from their grief including denial, anger, guilt, and sadness. The child will discover within the pages of this brief but superbly presented story that it is normal and natural to feel the pain of loss created by a friend or loved one moving away or dying -- and that they can and will come to accept the change in their life and eventually feel better.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-03-29

When the main character loses several important figures in her life- her pet dies, her father moves away, etc.- she feels the pangs of loss. This is a great book to read to children! So many children have experienced loss- when their parents get divorced, a pet dies, a grandparent dies, or a good friend moves away- but have no way of knowing that what they are feeling is NORMAL. This book helps explain that to children- that feeling sad is normal when you lose someone or something important to you. I recommend this book to anyone who has any contact with children- teachers, parents, sitters, etc. It is a great book!
