Book Description

Daniel Adamson has a fondness for women's ears, a preference that leads him to commit deliberate murder and involuntary arson. Is he a victim of society at large and his childhood in particular? And what do Lola Montez, Miss Jean Brodie, and Cleopatra have to do with it? “David Aitken pokes his finger in the stomach of the traditional crime novel, gently questioning our readiness to be mesmerized by crime and the causes of it.” — The Times (London)

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Thankfully short, ridiculous novel........2005-09-01

Reading sleeping with "Jane Austen" left a bad taste in my mouth. The narrative was awful, I loathed the main character and found him repulsive and wonder if there really is such a creature so pathetic. Aitken also peppered this 200 page excuse for a novel with highly erudite words that hardly anybody uses, let alone a depraved serial killer with an ear fetish. It's not the worst(That's Kathy Acker's "pirate" book), but it comes pretty close.

4 out of 5 stars Earmarked for enjoyment.......2001-01-14

What are the limits of your compassion? Listen to an alleged madman who has a penchant for prostitute's ears rave about the culture that locked him up.

There can be no doubt that the author has an ear for the nuances of intelligent, colorful conversation. This is a book for the sophisticated reader who isn't frightened of being a fence-sitter in the realm of moral matters! Minus one star for trailing off at the end.
