Fearfully Factual - Wholly Horrific.......2007-04-22
If you, like me, believe that the truth doesn't always makes sense, but the WHOLE TRUTH usually does, then you will appreciate and value this well researched, carefully written work by G.E. Griffin. Even so, this is just the tip of a much bigger iceberg, but for anyone who wants to know why the working class has to work so hard, just to go backwards, you will find out a very definitive answer in this book. This book is a must have for any TRUTH SEEKER fighting for facts in an age of profiteering deceipt. If you are new to economics, please read "Whatever Happened To Penny Candy" by Richard J. Maybury and Jane A. Williams first and you will know more than than most politicians. Griffins other book, "A World Without Cancer" is equally as researched, informative, and important.
Even a beginner can understand.......2007-04-04
When I first read this book - I had only just begun looking at the banking system and how it worked. My knowledge extended a bit past CNBC - but not much. I found it understandable and enjoyable. Since my original read (about 3 years ago) I have read it again and bought a second copy to loan out - I don't want to lose my original. I'm not sure Joe Average could simply pick it up and be enthralled, but if you have an interest in the banking system - this is a great book - even if you have little background in the subject.
The Matrix .......2007-03-17
AFTER READING THIS BOOK YOU WILL HEAR DISCUSSIONS ON TALK SHOWS, ARTICLES IN THE PAPERS AND YOU'LL LISTEN TO THE RHETORIC BANTERED BACK AND FORTH AMONG PEOPLES TRYING TO GRASP "WHY THINGS ARE HAPPENING THE WAY THEY ARE". WHY DO BANKS GET INVOLVED IN APPROVING HOME LOANS ON OVER VALUED PROPERTY...KNOWING FORECLOSURES WILL SOON SKYROCKET? WHY DOES THE US SELL WEAPON TECHONOLOGY TO COUNTRIES THAT, WE CITIZENS ARE TOLD, ARE PROBLEM COUNTRIES? WHY HAS THE CIA TRAINED FOREIGN BORN INDIVIDUALS, SUCH AS, BIN LADEN AND OTHERS KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT? THE MEDIA REPORTS EVENTS AND WE ASSUME THAT IT IS TRUE...THAT IT REPRESENTS REALITY. BUT, THIS BOOK WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. THEN YOU WILL REALIZE HOW FOOLISH WE ARE TO LIVE IN THIS "WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE" THAT THE MEDIA HAS CREATED FOR US.
Should be required reading.......2007-03-06
You can read the other reviews for synopsis and overviews. This is a must read and should be required reading for all Americans. It is a well researched and footnoted exposition on the Federal Reserve and far more. Griffin goes into fascinating asides regarding the origins of money and banking and the ways that bankers have instigated wars while supporting both sides. This book should be of great interest to those who enjoy either history, finance, foreign affairs, mystery or politics and answers many questions as to why the "world" is as it is today. The first 50 pages are a little slow and then it reads like a detective novel. It could even be argued that it's one's duty to read this book.

Book Description
The most powerful case against the American central bank ever written. This work begins with a mini-treatment of money and banking theory, and then plunges right in with the real history of the Federal Reserve System. Rothbard covers the struggle between competing elites and how they converged with the Fed.
Rothbard calls for the abolition of the central bank and a restoration of the gold standard. His popular treatment incorporates the best and most up-to-date scholarship on the Fed's origins and effects.
Customer Reviews:
Preposterous!.......2007-04-19
The underlying theme in this pamphlet by Murray Rothbard of the Australian School of Economics, is that the Federal Resereve should be abolished and we should return to a gold standard.
Clearly this so-called economist has overlooked two very important things...
1. Without the Federal Reserve, how would Citi et al and JP Morgan et al make any money?
2. What would stop the so called "free market" from being exploited by greedy miners who would inflate the production & supply of gold so quickly that we would experience hyperinflation and a complete breakdown of the currency?
Verdict: Poorly thought out arguments Mr Rothbard.
One of the most amazing books I've ever read.......2007-03-03
I bought this book after listening to two friends arguing about the Federal Reserve and, having no economics background at all, realizing that I didn't understand anything they were talking about. For the most part, it is clearly explained in a way an economics lay-person such as my self can follow. I wish this book had been recommended to me as part of my high school economics class, in fact, had more people read this book, this nation would not be in the dire situation it is facing.
The departure of law.......2007-01-04
This book very logically laid out the case for how our law hs been corrupted by the bankers use of reserve ratios and ponzi schemes. A very good book and I highly recommend it. One does not know chaos until there is bank run and if the banking industry operated with honesty and integrity instead of principles based on lying and theft then there would not be bank runs.
The Case For This Book.......2006-10-28
Written a year before Rothbard's death, The Case Against the Fed embodies a lifetime of his wisdom and scholarship. Rothbard was a gifted historian and each paragraph is packed with valuable information that truly explains the motives behind the creation of the Fed. Clear, concise, and witty at times, the book is easy to read and comprehend, and is relatively short as well.
Rothbard demonstrates that it was the bankers themselves who lobbied for the creation of a central bank in the US, as the cartelization of commercial banks was to allow for even greater inflation of money and credit. Fractional reserve banking, which is nothing more than embezzlement, causes not only inflation, but a redistribution of wealth from society to the bankers, as Rothbard explains.
This book not only succinctly explains the operations of the Federal Reserve System, but is probably also the simplest available introduction to the theory of the origin of money, the differences between 100% reserve and fractional reserve banking, the ills of central banking, the absurdity of deposit insurance, and the Cantillon Effect. The book concludes with a simple plan for liquidating the Fed and reestablishing the gold standard in the US.

Book Description
Allan H. Meltzer's monumental history of the Federal Reserve System tells the story of one of America's most influential but least understood public institutions. This first volume covers the period from the Federal Reserve's founding in 1913 through the Treasury-Federal Reserve Accord of 1951, which marked the beginning of a larger and greatly changed institution.
To understand why the Federal Reserve acted as it did at key points in its history, Meltzer draws on meeting minutes, correspondence, and other internal documents (many made public only during the 1970s) to trace the reasoning behind its policy decisions. He explains, for instance, why the Federal Reserve remained passive throughout most of the economic decline that led to the Great Depression, and how the Board's actions helped to produce the deep recession of 1937 and 1938. He also highlights the impact on the institution of individuals such as Benjamin Strong, governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the 1920s, who played a key role in the adoption of a more active monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Meltzer also examines the influence the Federal Reserve has had on international affairs, from attempts to build a new international financial system in the 1920s to the Bretton Woods Agreement of 1944 that established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and the failure of the London Economic Conference of 1933.
Written by one of the world's leading economists, this magisterial biography of the Federal Reserve and the people who helped shape it will interest economists, central bankers, historians, political scientists, policymakers, and anyone seeking a deep understanding of the institution that controls America's purse strings.
Customer Reviews:
Not for the layman.......2003-12-12
This much heralded account of the Federal Reserve is justly lauded in academic circles because Meltzer brings forth many Fed documents which have long been buried away and unavailable to scholars. He is able to pursue step-by-step Fed actions and relate what happened in all those many meetings behind closed doors. Through the mass of information he has uncovered and his own in-depth knowledge of monetary policy and the Fed, he is able to bring new facts to light and correct previous interpretations that are more often than not those of Friedman and Schwartz's A Monetary History of the United States.
The weaknesses of Meltzer's book stem from his massive archive of information and the strength of his predecessors. The sheer volume of information he is trying to convey prompts the narrative to drift and the reader sometimes loses the point. And, as a good academic historian, he is engaged in a dialogue with other historians of the Fed and monetary policy that can push the layman to the sidelines. Meltzer's history assumes the reader has a rather advanced knowledge of economics and finance such as an understanding of the real bills doctrine and the operation of an international gold standard. Also, the charts and tables are often not very helpful in understanding the text or at least could have been presented in a better manner.
Overall, Meltzer does not produce any stunning revelations but a great many correctives to previous accounts and much added detail. The novice to the history of US monetary policy would do better to read Richard Timberlake's book (though taken with a grain of salt because of its conservative leanings) or the classic work by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz.

Book Description
In August 2004, Governor James E. McGreevey of New Jersey made history when he stepped before microphones, declared "My truth is that I am a gay American," and announced his resignation. The story made international headlines—but what led to that moment was a human and political drama more complex and fascinating than anyone knew. Now, in this extraordinarily candid memoir, McGreevey shares his story of a life of ambition, moral compromise, and redemption.
From childhood, McGreevey lived a kind of idealized American life. The son of working-class Irish Catholic parents, named for an uncle who died at Iwo Jima, he strove to exceed expectations in everything he did, meeting each new challenge as though his "future rode on every move." As a young man he was tempted by the priesthood, yet it was another callingâpoliticsâthat he found irresistible. Plunging early into the dangerous waters of New Jersey politics, he won three elections by the age of thirty-six, and soon thereafter nearly toppled the state's popular governor, Christie Todd Whitman, in a photo-finish election. Four years later, he won the governorship by a landslide.
Throughout his adult life, however, Jim McGreevey had been forced to suppress a fundamental truth about himself: that he was gay. He knew at once that the only clear path to his dreams was to live a straight life, and so he split in two, accepting the traditional role of family man while denying his deepest emotions. And he discovered, to his surprise, that becoming a political player demanded ethical shortcuts that became as corrosive as living in the closet. In the cutthroat culture of political bosses, backroom deals, and the insidious practice known as "pay-to-play," he writes, "political compromises came easy to me because I'd learned how to keep a part of myself innocent of them." His policy triumphs as governor were tempered by scandal, as the transgressions of his staff came back to haunt him. Yet only when a former lover threatened to expose him did he finally confront his divided soul, and find the authentic self that had always eluded him.
More than a coming-out memoir, The Confession is the story of one man's quest to repair the rift between his public and private selves, at a time in our culture when the personal and political have become tangled like frayed electric cables. Teeming with larger-than-life characters, written with honesty, grace, and rare insight into what it means to negotiate the minefields of American public life, it may be among the most honest political memoirs ever written.
Customer Reviews:
An Emotional Time.......2007-05-10
Read about the experience of New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey when he came out of the closet.
MIXED FEELINGS.......2007-05-02
I am glad he is at peace. I really am. But what about Dina? What about the fact that he would have been running for President right now - had he not been "caught."
I knew him for a short time. I also knew Dina. Jimmy still has a lot of work to do on himself. Very self-absorbed man. Hopefully this will help him live in a real world now. I think he's lived in denial for so long, he can't distinguish reality from lies. It's sad.
Dina, just a sweetheart. Always loved her. Deserved way better than this. A well written book, however.
The litany of a Liar.......2007-05-02
Absolutely amazing that this person can create excuses for all his behavior. He had one goal in life - to get to the Presidency - and everything he did was to advance that goal including marrying Dina his 2nd wife. This woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got enmeshed in the web of lies and avarice that ruled McGreevey's life. How incredible that everybody else is the cause of what he did - no responsibility from him, no true apology to his wife for what he did. He robbed his wife of the ability to trust anybody else and left his daughter with the legacy of her father's lies and continued hypocrisy. His sexuality has nothing to do with the morally corrupt person he is. He continues to lie and try to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the public - remember this is what he has done over and over! Don't fall into the trap of believing any of his explanations; you may want to believe in the goodness of people but this man has no redeeming values at all. I am sorry that Oprah ever had him on her show - he was great theater at that time- but he is such a manipulator. This is so sad for Dina's daughter but also for his older daughter who is of an age to understand what has gone on.
Confession is good for the soul.......2007-04-06
I was prepared to fine McGreevey unlikeable and pleading. Instead, I found his story engrossing and his window to New jersey politics extremely informative to those of us not living in the Garden State. As a gay man who also came out late (although now many years ago) I fully understood his concerns and recognized the dilemmas he faced. Well worth the read.
I want my money back.......2007-02-06
Thank goodness that I didn't pay to read this book. Since McGreevey is bent on releasing his personal demons for redemption, how about he pays NJ taxpayers back? -- I was one of them -- when he forced us to pay for his boy-toy on staff -- a man who was absolutely not qualified for the job for which he was hired -- nor did he deserve the HUGE extraordinary salary he was given. We all seem to have forgotten this McGreevey tidbit. Why aren't we asking McGreevey to truly repent -- and pay back NJ taxpayers for arranging for this boy-toy on his staff -- who as we know -- was hired by McGreevey so that McGreevey could conveniently find him when he needed to frollic in bed. McGreevey's friend, Bill Clinton, never paid Federal taxpayers back for the $42 million we paid for investigating his "I never had sex with that woman" statement. Why did we have to also pay for McGreevey's denials of what he was really doing?
I could care less about the sex lives of these politicians. They may do whatever they wish as long as they do not do it in their place of business and remember that their position demands ethics -- it is their fidiciary duty to taxpayers -- as well as their duty to be a role-model for our nation's children. Any gay, purple, black, female or gorilla politician is fine with me -- they simply must stop stealing taxpayer money -- particularly for their perverted sexual pleasures! And if politicians like McGreevey do steal taxpayer money -- as when he hired Golan for a job this boy-toy was not qualified to work-- then McGreevey needs to be held accountable -- only then will his true demons leave and "cleanse his soul" -- if that's what he's into these days.
Now McGreevey is writing all about it. Boo hoo.

Book Description
A rising star of the Democratic Party tells the fascinating story of the ways his multicultural heritage and political education have shaped his dreams for America and given him vital lessons in the art of successful negotiating.
Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, may be the most charismatic figure in the Democratic Party today and one of its best natural politicians whose name isn't Bill Clinton. He is the man Colin Powell has called for advice, and the man George Stephanopoulos once called the Red Adair of diplomacy in homage to his ability to put out international fires. He has been nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize and is counted as one of our most knowledgeable politicians on Iraq and Saddam Hussein; on Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda; on North Korea; on energy policy; on Latin American affairs; on domestic politics; and on Hispanic America.
Richardson's background as the son of an American businessman father and a Mexican mother has offered him an unusual starting point from which to seek a life in public service, but one of his most interesting roles has been that of global troubleshooter. What he has to say about how to negotiate to get what you want shows his true colors: He can be blunt, but charming; tough, but respectful; realistic, but hopeful. Through his work as a hostage negotiator sitting across the table from the likes of Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, and many others-as well as his toil on Capitol Hill, in the United Nations, and New Mexico's state government-he has learned the vital importance of preparation: know as much as possible about your adversary; test your partner's truthfulness; know how much you can concede; never lie and always be direct.
Between Worlds is the surprising story of one of our most seasoned and captivating national figures.
Customer Reviews:
Bill Richardson, the book, the lite version.......2007-05-22
I have been interested in Bill Richardson as a potential presidential candidate for some time so I wanted to read his story to get some more information on what he might bring to the Democratic race. So should you read this book to learn about Richardson? Sure but you may be left wanting to know more as I did after finishing it.
This book, true to its subtitle "The Making of an American Life", chronicles Richardson's life, his childhood in Mexico, his high school and college years in the US and the major turning points in his life. The book is very good at this and more interesting than I thought but it does not have much detail of proposals to solve many of the national problems we are facing today. There was a list of highlighted important sayings called "Richardson's List". This I thought might be a list of what he thought would help steer the country to a better position in diplomacy, health care, environment, and the economy but was a synopsis of what he had learned in his career on how to be a successful politician, diplomat and negotiator. Hopefully if his campaign goes well we will have the opportunity to hear more from this very accomplished stateman.
Between Two Worlds.......2007-05-14
Highly informative and well thought out and organized. This book is also easy-reading. The various subjects and Richardson's broad experience gave an insightful analysis to measure him as a Governor and possibly President of the U.S.
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary leadership..........2007-01-12
...and Bill Richardson is just such a leader.
This book is a terrific read. Wonderfully engaging, thoughtful, and insightful memoir from one of America's finest leaders and diplomats. Richardson is a wise, pragmatic, and visionary leader who may well become America's next President. A must-read.
Richardson for America ~ I Believe!
A guy we can all relate to.......2006-03-29
This book is warm and generous, just like its author. He's a guy just like the rest of us with fears, joys, sorrows, disappointments, peeves, and some great accomplishments. I loved sharing his life with him, and thank him for being so open.
Disappointing--shallower than anticipated.......2006-01-06
I am a Hispanic on my mother's side, completely disdainful of both the Republican and the Democratic parties for having "sold out" to special interests and betrayed the public trust, and actively interested in "alternative candidates" that might make the leap from being a captive of the machine to being a true representative of the people.
Bill Richardson is undeniably attractive to both Hispanics and to Native Americans, and he moves easily and ably in the Anglo world of energy and environmental politics. As a former UN Ambassador and as a former Secretary of Energy I bought this book eagerly anticipating a "roadmap" for what the author calls the "New Progressivism."
This is not such a roadmap. While I respect the author very much, this book reads more like a dictated and then ghost-edited "formula" book. It communicates absolutely no sense of the over-all challenges facing America and the world, not even in the energy arena. "Peak Oil" is not mentioned in this book, and neither are alternative sources of energy. Global poverty and disease and water scarcity are not mentioned in this book.
While the author does discuss predatory lending in his own state, something he commendably seeks to stop, he seems to have no sense of the global impact of immoral predatory capitalism.
While the author is clearly an exceptional negotiator able to charm dictators, and he provides several admirable stories to support this view, he does not seem to grasp that our foreign policy is "gutted" by our continuing support for 44 dictators.
There are some gems in here, for instance when he notes that Madeline Albright slammed the door shut on the Iranians when they were seeking rapprochement with the US through UN channels.
While the author does not stress the point, he does seem to champion an end to the embargo on Cuba, and a re-opening of a full relationship that should inevitably profit both countries. Perhaps his Mexican heritage has ensured that he heard the Mexican President when he refused to duplicate the US embargo, with the famous words "if I were to say that Cuba was a threat to our national security, 40 million Mexicans would die laughing."
I have plenty of underlining throughout the book, and it was sufficient to warrant my full attention over two flights in and out of Tampa, but I put the book down thinking to myself that the book was a tease, not the main event.
The author says that he has produced over 30 major policy studies for his New Mexican governorship, and I believe it. I'd like to see a serious book by this man, one that addresses the key issues facing America across every Cabinet department, and ends with a chapter on ends and means. To his credit, he is a strong champion of a balance budget.
Nice guy--clearly a strong candidate for Secretary of State. It is not at all clear from this book that he is ready to run for President.

Lift Your Vision High Vision is a preferred future. A destination. Vision always stands in contrast to the world as it is. Visioneering, according to bestselling author Andy Stanley, is "a clear mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction that it should be." With warm, down-to-earth practicality, Andy Stanley explores the ordinary life of Nehemiah and his God-given vision for accomplishing the extraordinary. He shows how the life of this great ancient visionary, determined to rebuild the ruined walls of Jerusalem, reveals principles that can prepare us to find and follow God's multifaceted vision for our own lives. Now this bestseller is again available in an attractive, affordable paperback!

Visioneering: God's Blueprint for Developing and Maintaining Personal Vision
by Andy Stanley
This is essentially the paper-pack version of the author's earlier hard-back book bearing the same title. My copy of the hard-back was published in 2001.
With due respect & from a secular standpoint, - subtracting all the religious connotations in the book -, I want to say that this book is still a reasonably good book on personal strategic planning.
In particular, I like the author's definition & point of view: "Vision is a preferred future. A destination. Vision always stands in contrast to the world as it is. Visioneering is a clear mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction that it should be."
Also, among the eighteen chapters, Chapter 13: 'Moral Authority' is certainly an interesting chapter to read, as it is a material departure from most, if not all, visioning or visioneering books!
I reckon this book will appeal more to those readers with a Christian background. I had originally bought this book without realising it (in reality, I had overlooked the secondary title on the book cover), but I have no regrets.
Own it! What are you waiting for?.......2006-08-25
This book has changed my personal and ministerial life as a pastor. You don't have to be a pastor to appreciate this work. Whoever you are and wherever you are, this book is for you. Life will never be the same for you.

A terrific read for history lovers.......2004-09-02
I have had the opportunity to rub shoulders with Dr. Tutorow for many years, and was most pleased to learn some 5 years or so ago that he, with Mrs. Tutorow's able assistance, was to write the history of Amasa Leland Stanford. As the book progressed, I was fortunate to be able to review the chapters written re: the Central Pacific Rail Road. I can truthfully say that Dr. Tutorow is a veritable bull dog when it came to finding the human details that enriched our State and the West as the Rail Road was built. Norman also asked Lynn Farrar, retired Valuation Engineer for the So. Pac. RR and other railroad historians to review this work; I am pleased to report that the result of Norman's hard labor and the suggestions from many of the finest historians alive today is a rich trove of nuggets never before seen in print.
If you have an interest in California history, history of the West, history of the building of an empire or a desire to gain more knowledge of commerce in the West, this book is a must read.
Printed in a limited edition by the Arthur Clark Co., when this book is sold out it may be difficult to find one for sale.
This book is printed in two volumes, has some 1500 pages, and over 5,000 footnotes. Truly history for historians.

"Youthful political reporters are always told there are three ways to judge a politician," write Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose in Shrub. "The first is to look at the record. The second is to look at the record. And third, look at the record." The record under scrutiny in this brief, informative book belongs to one George W. Bush--dubbed "Shrub" by Ivins--governor of Texas and 2000 presidential hopeful. These two veteran journalists know how politics are played in Texas and they've done their homework, writing a comprehensive examination of Bush's professional and political life that's a lively read, to boot. And if the title alone doesn't convey their particular slant, perhaps the following caveat from the introduction will: "If, at the end of this short book, you find W. Bush's political résumé a little light, don't blame us. There's really not much there. We have been looking for six years."
Beginning with his admission to the Texas National Guard during the Vietnam War (where he bypassed a waiting list of about 100,000), the authors go on to deconstruct his losing congressional bid, his failed career as an oil executive, and his role as managing partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, revealing how he was helped every step of the way by wealthy and influential friends of the family. Ever popular, Dubya has always been good at rounding up powerful players to bankroll a variety of ventures, including political campaigns. For this reason, explain the authors, along with his lineage and social status, Bush's primary allegiance is to the business community. While his speeches may deal with the "entertainment issues" of "God, guns, and gays," Bush is a "wholly owned subsidiary of corporate America," they write. They further point out that Texas ranks near the bottom of the nation in terms of a number of social categories, such as poverty, health insurance for children, and pollution, spearing the governor for his less-than-compassionate conservatism.
Shrub is not a complete Bush whacking, though. The authors laud the governor's record on education, in which he has managed to raise standards, push local control of schools, and launch a successful reading campaign. They also cite his wooing of the Hispanic vote and his ability to bridge the gap between the Christian right and the economic conservatives within the Republican party as evidence of true political acumen, though they maintain he lacks a penchant for actual governing: "From the record, it appears that he doesn't know much, doesn't do much and doesn't care much about governing." Bush has admitted that he dislikes reading, particularly about policy issues, and that he hates meetings and briefings, causing the authors to wonder, "The puzzle of Bush is why someone with so little interest in or attention for policy, for making government work, would want the job of president, or even governor."
Love him or leave him, Shrub leaves much to consider about the man who would be president. And it can be read in about a day. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
When it comes to reporting on politics, nobody does it smarter or funnier than bestselling author Molly Ivins. In Shrub, Ivins focuses her Texas-size smarts on the biggest politician in her home state: George Walker Bush, or "Shrub," as Ivins has nicknamed Bush the Younger.
A candidate of vague speeches and an ambiguous platform, Bush leads the pack of GOP 2000 presidential hopefuls; "Dubya" could very well be our next president. What voters need now is an original, smart, and accessible analysis of Bush--one that leaves the "youthful indiscretions" to the tabloids and gets to the heart of his policies and motivations. Ivins is the perfect woman for the job.
With her trademark wit and down-home wisdom, Molly Ivins shares three pieces of advice on judging a politician: "The first is to look at the record. The second is to look at the record. And third, look at the record." In this book, Ivins takes a good, hard look at the record of the man who could be the leader of the free world. Beginning with his post-college military career, Ivins tracks Dubya's winding, sometimes unlikely path from a failed congressional bid to a two-term governorship. Bush has made plenty of friends and supporters along the way, including Texas oil barons, evangelist Billy Graham, and co-investors in the Texas Rangers baseball team. "You would have to work at it to dislike the man," she writes. But for all of Bush's likeability, Ivins points to a disconcerting lack of political passion from this ascending presidential candidate. In her words, "If you think his daddy had trouble with 'the vision thing,' wait till you meet this one."
Witty, trenchant, and on target, Ivins gives a singularly perceptive and entertaining analysis of George W. Bush. To head to the voting booth without it would be downright un-American.
From Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush
" The past is prologue in politics. If a politician is left, right, weak, strong, given to the waffle or the flip-flop, or, as sometimes happens, an able soul who performs well under pressure, all that will be in the record."
¸
Bush's welfare record: "Texas pols like to 'git tuff' on crime, welfare, commies, and other bad stuff. Bush proposed to git tuff on welfare recipients by ending the allowance for each additional child--which in Texas is $38 a month."
¸
Bush and the Christian right: "Bush has learned to dance with the Christian right. It has been interesting and amusing to watch the process. Interesting because it's sometimes hard to tell who's leading and who's following; amusing because when a scion of Old Yankee money gets together with a televangelist with too much Elvis, the result is swell entertainment."
¸
Bush's environmental record: Since Governor Bush's election, Texas air quality has been rated the worst in the nation, leading all fifty states in overall toxic releases, recognized carcinogens in the air, cancer risk, and ten other categories of pollutants.
¸
Bush's military career: "Bush was promoted as the Texas Air National Guard's anti-drug poster boy, one of life's little ironies given the difficulty he has had answering cocaine questions all these years later. 'George Walker Bush is one member of the younger generation who doesn't get his kicks from pot or hashish or speed,' reads a Guard press release of 1970. 'Oh, he gets high, all right, but not from narcotics.'"

Molly Ivins' Shrub'.......2007-05-30
If I was an American voter and I wished to for information about the Republican candidate prior to the 2000 election I would have bought the first edition of Ms Ivins' book. A read would have been enough to ensure that I would not have voted for Mr Bush even though Ms Ivins paints quite an attractive picture of him. She emphasises his campaigning abilities and the undoubted fact that unlike the present crop of Republican candidates he was able in his gubernatorial elections to unite the two quite separate parts of the American right, the fundamental Christians and the old time Republicans. However she also hands out low marks for ability and honesty. Bush does emerge as a Daddy's boy with Bush Senior's friends only too willing to hand out loans to shaky business enterprises and later to election expenses. I amazed that this book did not attract that much attention when the first edition was published.
An apolitical book with a political agenda.......2006-02-15
First and foremost, the book was enjoyable from cover to cover. 'Fun' and 'politics' are not two words that usually go together when you are speaking about casual reading. Surprise. This book hits the sweet spot.
That is not to say that Ms. Ivins and Mr. Duboise don't have a political agenda. It seems pretty clear that they don't like Mr. Bush or his policies very much, but they don't dwell on it. However, this is not a character assassination. They don't cast aspersions about Mr. Bush's social life, religious life, the clothes he wears, his 'youthful indiscretions' etc. They simply point to his political history and draw conclusions about where he stands politically. They also don't take pains to paint themselves as totally objective. What they do do is let the record speak for itself and let you draw your own conclusions.
The book is written in a very colloquial style and with a great degree of humor--both self-deprecating and acerbic at times. Despite a loathing for Mr. Bush's policies, they do paint a picture of him as the ultimate hands-off administrator who cleverly avoids conflicts by deliberately not defining himself, has a transparent agenda behind the opacity of his language, can defend his strengths with his weaknesses and always manages to raise his own capital. Political or monetary. Public or private sector. Whether the venture succeeds brilliantly or fails. Oddly, there is an aspect of the book that is almost a paean to the man...
However, the main attraction of this book isn't in its rhetoric or even its style. The bang for the buck is evident when you realize that this book was written in the year 2000, when Dubya was merely a presidential hopeful and had yet to be elected. Whether you like their treatment of Mr. Bush or not, the authors presciently and absolutely nail the policy issues and priorities of this Bush presidency. And that's why this volume is still a good read today.
minding bush's 'bidness'.......2006-02-11
In "Shrub", columnist Molly Ivins offers amusing anecdotes paired with grim statistics that make it necessary to reread them to make sure they're really true. She delves into Bush's laissez-faire attitude toward education, health, law and prison reform among others. Even those well versed in Bush's misdeeds will likely find something new and/or surprising here. The book is not a no-holds-barred attack on Dubya, however; credit is giving to him for his accomplishments, however minor. There is, however, a definite liberal bent.
Molly Ivans is smart in funny in this critical biography of George W. Bush.......2005-10-14
Molly Ivans is funny from start to finish she understands Bush and understands his thinking or lack of. From the Republican state convention to the Bush policies she tells all. She is a writer who actually has evidence to back up her stories. Republicans, Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and Independents alike should read this book.
How Has George W. Bush Reached the Apex of Politics? .......2005-08-16
Molly Ivins is a popular syndicated columnist who writes about political and social issues from her home base in Texas. She has written countless articles scrutinizing George W. Bush and his method of governing. She offers a good perspective, having been a Bush observer now for more than a decade. She has followed the current president from his days as a failed businessman, to his days as a failed governor, all the way to his present days as a failed president. She wrote this book and published it back in 2000, as a forewarning to those who were considering casting their vote for GWB.
Ivins, in case most people do not already know, is the type who favors government intervention in the economy in order to improve the lives of the majority of people. Her political philosophy is often at odds with George W., and most of what she writes in this book is critical toward the former Texas governor turned U.S. president. She details many of Bush's political failings; his unethical business dealings; and his deceptive relationship with the religious right. She wants people to see and hear what Bush did while he was governor of the Lone Star State. She wants voters to realize that this man is not worthy of the office of the U.S. presidency.
Much of what I read in this book is now old news. Most everyone now knows about the Bush team and its unethical maneuvering to stop rival John McCain from winning the primaries and the Republican nomination. We also know about Bush's failure as a businessman when he was drilling for oil in his home state. And most of us already know about Bush's questionable record of military service in the Texas Air National Guard and the fact that he has taken advantage of his last name to achieve things that would have otherwise been beyond his grasp.
Even though this book was published in 2000, there are still a few new tidbits of information about Bush's past that I didn't know until I read this book. Probably the most disgusting was Bush's unethical business practices regarding the Texas Rangers baseball team. Bush, the man who is supposedly against corporate welfare of any kind and believes that businessmen should be able to pull their own weight, took the residents of Arlington, Texas for millions when he and his associates demanded a new stadium (at the expense of taxpayers) or else they would move the team elsewhere. This wasn't illegal, but it was certainly unethical and it flies in the face of what George W. Bush supposedly believes about business and government. Another area of interest was Bush's relationship with the religious right. Bush began courting this group long ago, probably at the urging of his advisors. He is willing to play the game with the members of the religious right, pretending to support their agenda, if it means winning votes. But like any good politician, Bush also knows that he cannot step too far in the theological right direction. Doing so would possibly offend others and cost him some support.
It's obvious that Ivins doesn't like Bush very much in terms of his politics. But she does manage to find one area where Bush did a decent job when he was governor. That area is education, and it represents the one and only chapter in the book that has anything praiseworthy to say about GWB. Most everything else in the book is critical, with Ivins speaking her mind about Bush and his many failures, hoping that potential voters will read between the lines and realize that Bush isn't fit to govern.
Ivins admits one thing about Bush in her book and she credits it for the president's success in spite of his endless string of failures: His skill as a politician. Bush may be incompetent as a leader and his policies may be worthy of criticism. But there is no denying that Bush knows how to play the game of politics better than most anyone else in government. How else does one explain his terrible track record and reconcile it with his political victories? It's an interesting phenomenon, and Ivins herself (like millions of other U.S. residents) is likely very puzzled by it.
"Shrub" is, overall, a pretty good book with some humorous moments combined with a political expose on the current U.S. chief executive officer. This book leaves no stone unturned as it uncovers the many failures of George W. Bush, providing example after example of specific events, policy actions, and business practices relating to Bush and his politics, showing how he has failed at every turn and yet still managed to win in the majority of his political races.

Book Description
Chainbreaker is one of the earliest memoirs of an American Indian—a Seneca chief know as Governor Blacksnake to his white neighbors on the New York frontier. A fighter in the American Revolution, the old chief (who also went by the name Chainbreaker) had an exciting story to tell to his fellow Seneca, Benjamin Williams, in the mid-nineteenth century. His account is now published in its entirety for the first time, with extensive commentary by Thomas S. Abler setting the text in historical perspective.
The narrative begins with a flurry of diplomatic activity as the English and the rebellious Americans eagerly seek alliances with the Senecas and other tribes in the Iroquois Confederacy. Only in 1777 did Iroquois warriors enter the conflict. Blacksnake describes the fighting as he saw it on such fields as Oriskany, Wyoming, and Newtown. Educated not only to the warpath but to the council fire, he is sensitive to the central role his people played in peace negotiations after the defeat of the British. He describes also the efforts of the Senecas to promote peace between the Americans and the still hostile Indians of the Ohio country. Blacksnake was well placed to make and observe history: One of his uncles was Cornplanter, a prominent figure during the Revolutionary War and its aftermath. Another uncle was the prophet Handsome Lake, whose vision in 1799 led to a revitalization of Seneca religion and culture and is recounted here. Blacksnake’s story provides a rare Indian view of warfare and diplomacy during a time when the Six Nations of the Iroquois still played a major role in the history of North America.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable window into American Indian culture and history.......2005-09-29
"Chainbreaker: The Revolutionary War Memoirs of Governor Blacksnake, as told to Benjamin Williams," is edited by Thomas S. Abler, who also contributes an introduction and notes. The primary text is a first-person account by a Seneca Indian chief who fought during the American Revolution, and delivered his story orally to another Indian who committed it to writing. In addition to providing an overall introduction for the book, editor Abler also has written individual introductions for each section of the Blacksnake narrative. This supplemental material helps place Blacksnake's words in context.
Abler discusses in detail the background and history of the Blacksnake manuscript. He notes that this text "provides a rare Indian view of warfare and of diplomacy in a period when the Six Nations of the Iroquois still played a prominent and significant role in the development of North America" (p. 8). Abler discusses Blacksnake's family, his names, his people's culture, the Iroquois Confederacy as a political entity, and relations among the British, the revolutionary colonists, and Native Americans. It's a fascinating backdrop for Blacksnake's own story.
Blacksnake's own words show conflict within the Indian community, relations with white people, and the role of Indian women. He describes combat involving firearms, tomahawks, knives, and the "war whoop." Also covered in the book is the religious vision and career of Blacksnake's uncle, the prophet Handsome Lake. Appendices to the primary text include an intriguing series of communications between George Washington and Seneca leaders.
Abler notes that the Blacksnake/Williams text is written in "somewhat individualistic English"; I imagine many contemporary readers will find the text quite difficult, and will be thankful for Abler's clearly written supplementary text. The text is also enhanced by a wealth of visual materials, including maps, a daguerreotype of the elderly Blacksnake, reproductions of historic illustrations of other Indian leaders, photographs of historic wampum belts, and more. Also worthy of note is the extensive bibliography. This is a fascinating book, but I found it to be tragic and sad; it seems to me that in the main text and supplemental materials we can see the decline of the Iroquois Confederacy from a true military and political force to a marginalized people. Despite this downbeat aspect, the book is a real tribute to Blacksnake, Handsome Lake, and other remarkable Indian leaders. Overall, Abler has assembled a valuable contribution to both Native American studies and United States military history. Recommended companion text: "Geronimo: His Own Story," edited by Frederick Turner.

Solid Introduction to Economic Indicators, although dated.......2006-05-18
This book is an easy read and it is a great introduction to economic indicators. Unfortunately, it is out of date. It gives a description of what each indicator actually measures, who produces the indicator, and why it is important to the stock, bond, and currency markets.
It is a very quick read (less than a day) and can be used to refresh one's memory on the basic econ indicators.
It also includes an in-depth discussion of how the Fed actually regulates the money supply. This is one of the better introductions to the Fed's operations that I have read.
I recommend quickly reading this book whenever you need a refresher course on the very basics of what to look for in economic indicators, especially with respect to how they affect the markets.
I finally understand indicators.......2004-03-24
This book turned the light bulb on for me. Definately worth the price and one I will keep and recommend to others.
Very Usefull and Simple.......2000-12-13
Very usefull, specially for begginers that want to understand the data releases that are market-movers.
A Great And Easy Reference Guide.......2000-05-13
I first purchased this book about 10 years ago and have done so about once a year since then. It is of great help for those just fresh from the university and to the seasoned financial guru. When data has been made public from the FED, this book helps one to diagnose and better comprehend those economic figures.
