Book Description
They were called Easy Company-but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered 150% casualties while liberating Europe-an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters was their commander-"the best combat leader in World War II" to his men. This is his story-told in his own words for the first time.
On D-Day, Dick Winters parachuted into France and assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when their commander was killed. He led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. They liberated an S.S. death camp from the horrors of the Holocaust and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat. After briefly serving during the Korean War, Winters was a highly successful businessman. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers--and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries--he is the object of worldwide adulation.
Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters's memoir-based on his wartime diary-but it also includes his comrades' untold stories. Virtually all this material is being released for the first time. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war's end. Winner of the Distinguished Service Cross, only he could pen this moving tribute to the human spirit.

Supplemental reading only.......2007-06-15
I feel like a heretic, giving Dick Winters' story only three stars when I give both Ambrose's book and the TV miniseries, oh, ten stars. But as much as I was into the content, the choppy style was terribly annoying. I felt no "flow" in the narrative, which was why it took me about five or six sessions to finish it - where I read Ambrose straight through in one sitting. Like many "believers," Winters is all too ready to ascribe anything good, up to and including his rifle aim, to his religious faith. Wonder how Muck and Pincala felt about that. And it seemed like he managed to cite, at one point or another, just about every soldier under his command as "one of the finest soldiers I ever saw." After about the tenth "finest" it kinda loses some power. But, hey, everyone else who reviewed this book said it was great, so maybe it's just me...
Amazon is Amazing.......2007-05-27
I ordered a new release historical non fiction hardback book and purchased it through Amazon for a fraction of the bookstore price. I received it in a short time by mail. The book was new. I have become a regular customer of Amazon.
The content of "Beyond Band of Brothers" is excellent. I appreciate that Dick Winterw took the time and effort to co author his biography of his acions during WWII. The book is easy reading and gives a direct, no frills account of the war from one of the few front line combat leaders that survived that most horrific American involvement in the war in Europe physically whole. To me, Major Winters is a true American hero.
He fought that war from beginning to end. This is his story and how he saw it.
excellent book.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book for my husband, who has watched the Band of Brothers series over and over... countless times really. I haven't watched the series, nor read this book, but I know he couldn't put the book down. He was really sad when he finished it - he wished there was more story. For any Band of Brothers fan - apparently this is a must read.
Winters' personal account compelling.......2007-05-25
Beyond Band of Brothers is the incredible story of an extraordinary man. Most of the content will be familiar to anyone who's read the Stephen Ambrose book or the seen the HBO series. Here, Winters offers a fascinating personal perspective on his time with the 101st Airbourne. It's by no means a perfect book, though. You can't help thinking that Winters was let down by his co-writer - there are some sentences crying out for spit and polish and the lack of detail from Winters later life (particularly the omission of virtually any reference to his wife) may leave you wishing the book was truer to its title. But despite this, Beyond Band of Brothers is a tremendously inspiring and enjoyable read.
Well worth the read.......2007-05-25
I saw the movie and was totally mesmerized. While I had hoped this book would greatly expand on the movie, it really did not. It is still a good book I would recommend.

- There Be No Dragons: How to Cross a Big Ocean in a Small Sailboat
ASIN: 077101841X
Release Date: 2006-12-12 |
Book Description
The perfect armchair sailing guide, with enough detail to set a person dreaming . . .
On July 21, 2004, Silver Donald Cameron and his wife, Marjorie Simmins, set sail from D’Escousse, in Cape Breton Island, toward the white sand beaches and palm trees of the nearest tropical islands. They were sailing an old Norwegian-built ketch named Magnus. Accompanying them was their dog, Leo the Wonder Whippet.
Leo was thirteen. The skipper was an old-age pensioner. His youthful mate was new to the cruising life. Yet 236 days later, with more than 3,000 nautical miles behind them, this distinctly trepid crew rowed ashore in Little Harbour, in the Bahamas, heading for Pete’s Pub, a palm-thatched tiki bar on the beach.
It had been quite a trip. All three had lost fat and gained muscle. They were not in debt. Friends had remarked that the skipper and mate looked ten years younger, and the ancient Leo was capering about like a puppy.
Mind you, there had been bad moments, as in Jonesport, Maine, when the skipper smashed the boat into a wharf and punched a hole in the bow, or the black night off the deadly coast of New Jersey, in a screeching gale with the boat rolling her side decks under.
But there had been plenty of thrills, too: fireworks over the Tall Ships in Halifax Harbour; careening down the East River at ten knots with Manhattan whizzing past to starboard; feasting on hush puppies and grits with chicken gravy in Georgia; enjoying the ancient streets of St. Augustine, and the dazzling opulence of Fort Lauderdale. And then, after crossing the Gulf Stream, the Bahamas, complete with coral reefs crowded with tropical fish, yellow and scarlet and black.
A long way from the snow and ice back home.

A vividly detailed recounting of the joys and perils of navigating the ocean in an aged Norwegian-built ketch.......2007-04-07
"Sailing Away From Winter: A Cruise From Nova Scotia to Florida and Beyond" is the true-life memoir of Canadian columnist Silver Donald Cameron, who dared to make his dreams of a sea voyage come true. With his wife and their beloved dog, he traveled more than three thousand nautical miles in 236 days, visiting towns dotting the coast from Nova Scotia to Florida, crossing the Gulf Stream, experiencing the Bahamas, and much more. A vividly detailed recounting of the joys and perils of navigating the ocean in an aged Norwegian-built ketch, the camaraderie shared with other cruisers, and much more. Highly recommended.

From the Five-Time Nebula Award-Winner
Seven thousand centuries ago, falling death stars unleashed fiery apocalyptic destruction on Earth and inaugurated the Long Winter. One small band of People took refuge in an underground cocoon where they and their descendants waited for the time of ice to end. Now their long winter is over. Prophecy and circumstance urge the tribe out into the half-forgotten world beyond their safe cocoon. Led by their chieftain Koshmar, the tribe journeys to the city of Vengiboneeza, where the prophecy of the gods says they are to rule. On their way the tribe discovers the dangers and wonders of life in the New Springtime. In the face of new temptations and peril, Koshmar and her lover, the priestess Torlyri, struggle to keep the People united and fulfill the prophecy. For soon they will be beset by other trials, as other beings seek to fulfill their own prophecies.
Robert Silverberg provides an introduction exclusive to this Bison Books edition.
Customer Reviews:
At Winter's End.......2006-11-04
At Winter's End, by Robert Silverberg, is a science fiction story about a tribe of apelike, but intelligent beings, who call themselves humans. After seven hundred thousand years, they leave the cocoon that their ancestors built in the depths of a vast mountainside for shelter from the great death stars and freezing winter. Their leader, Koshmar, leads them on a dangerous journey to a city called Vengiboneeza. While they are there, they discover many objects and clues to the past. They eventually follow, when ten of their tribe, led by the warrior Harruel, decide it is their destiny to start their own city. This is the beginning of a new life in a new place.
The main characters of this book are Koshmar, the chief, Hresh, the young chronicler, Toryli, the offering woman, and the warriors, Harruel and Konya. Koshmar is a kind but stern leader who is adamant about leaving the cocoon when the time is correct. She leads them to Vengiboneeza. Hresh, a boy of nine years, becomes chronicler after the preceding old man, Thaggoran, died from a wolf attack. Toryli is the kind woman who gave the daily offering to the outside world back in the cocoon, and is like a mother to the growing tribe. She provides warmth and love to all who are in need. The warriors, Harruel and Konya aren't the only warriors, but they take part in most of the scenes. Harruel is a burly, massive, towering man who eventually turns away from the tribe with ten others to start his own city. His ferocious fighting spirt makes him the head of the warriors. Konya is Harruel's friend, and follows Harruel when he leads the tribe away. Unlike him, he has a lean, but strong figure, and has earned second rank in power.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, and a little mystery and science fiction. It sets forth thought-provoking ideas, such as a second sight, gods, and contacting the spirit realm, to enhance the experience and make this book a must read for all adventure and science fiction lovers.
Somehow I wanted more from this.......2005-10-02
I feel like this took me forever to get through, despite breezing through the first 200 pages within 24 hours of cracking the cover.
The last 150, on the other hand, took me five or six days to get through.
I slammed through the early portions of this thanks to the really interesting premise: The Earth is struck by comets and plunged into a long ice age. The story picks up at the end of that era. A small group of "people", sheltered for thousands of years, exit their shelter at the end of the ice age to create a new world.
Sounds great, but things really ground to a halt about 200 pages in. Is this a soap opera? A philosophical exploration? A "lost civilization" story? An adventure? The book is not sure. Had it chosen its course and stayed there, I would have loved the ride. Instead, I found myself wanting more from this book.
Silverberg's premise is good enough, but the story didn't feel as if it actually went anywhere. Excellent and well done characters, good world-building, but no sense of urgency or movement to the story. Silverberg plays with some philosophical concepts, but he just doesn't do it very well. And the end was very anti-climactic and unsatisfactory. After reading several good Silverberg's, he may have just handed me my first dud (or semi-dud; the writing was very strong) in a long streak of pretty enjoyable books.
I wanted to like this. I really did. The characters and concepts were simply brilliant; the world building fantastic. But in the end it was just, "eh."
More than meets the eye.......2004-01-07
Let me say before I start this interview that I LOATH sci-fi or fantasy that involves talking monkies, apes, or animalistic humanoids in general. Silverberg, the literary master that he is, presents his characters in terms of who they are first, then much later their physicality. The entire book was fresh and innovative. After I was done it left me wanting much more. Not more from the story but more pages to devour.
The other thing I LOATH about sci-fi or fantasy are when authors bury us in consonant heavy, made up names. Silvererg actually manages to use strange names successfully to accentuate the story. There are tons of details, I recommend the read at the highest level.
My Inroduction to Gripping Sci-Fi.......2001-07-02
I've been looking everywhere for this book, and have been unable to find it at nearby bookstores and libraries. I read it many years ago, in junior high I believe, which seems not so long ago, but I haven't read it since. As soon as I find a copy to buy though, I plan on devouring the story word by word. Of all the books I have read, Silverberg's tale of a far-future earth has stuck with me, never fading as so many books and their plots often do. This is classic SF written by one of the masters in the genre. I recommend this to anyone searching for a great adventure and not wanting to be bogged down in a long drawn out series, i.e. Hubbard's Mission Earth, or Jordan's Wheel of Time, or perhaps to make the wait between installments not so agonizing, i.e. George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire or the Dune prequels by Kevin J. Anderson and David Herbert, two current obsessions of mine. Also try Silverberg's Lord Valentine books, those are classics as well, and worthy reads for any fantasist looking for someplace better to be, if only for a little while.
One of Silverberg's Best.......1999-10-27
Silverberg is perhaps SF's greatest living author. This is one of the best of his later works, a spellbinding and engrossing novel that transports to the reader to an alien world. It's not easy to create convincing aliens that human readers can identify with, but Silverberg succeeds here with a fascinating tale full of mythic archetypes, beautifully drawn characters, and of course his glittering and vivid prose.

Book Description
Applying the vivid metaphor of "Fire on Ice", author Nelson "Chris" Stokes begins his account of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team, citing its spectacular crash at the 1988 Calgary Olympics to its triumphs across world competition. Once a novelty portrayed in the motion picture Cool Runnings, the team has become a phenomenon, quite unlike any other sporting enterprise, prompting journalists and sports historians to rave about its indomitable spirit, its uncanny survival, its crowd-pleasing collective personae.
All this is recorded in Cool Runnings and Beyond: The Story of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team where team member Stokes describes how, once kindled, this little flame called Jamaica Bobsleigh refused to sputter, but flared like its Olympic counterpart. First dismissed as a gimmick when it burst on the scene at the Calgary Games, Jamaica Bobsleigh began to truly compete, and the world began taking measure.
These islanders from the tropics proved they could race on ice and if given enough practice, funds, and support, they might become medal contenders.
Now president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation, Chris Stokes provides two narratives from his experience as an Olympian and a member of the world bobsleighing community. One details the personalities, those grinding training regimens, and the raw hopes and fears, disasters and determination found behind the familiar media images. Drawing from his experience within the fluid and dynamic demands of marketing Jamaica Bobsleigh, Chris also provides lessons for fundraising, building a vibrant and visionary business, and for those who would seek personal growth in context of teamwork.

Book Description
Kids everywhere will be grabbing their calligraphy pens, because this follow-up to the wildly successful Calligraphy for Kids offers them even more artful fun. Inside they'll find new alphabets--and new ways to render the alphabets they already know--as well as fresh techniques and projects. There's coverage of the basic rules of layout; a review of some of the fundamental skills; advice on changing the weight of italic letters and forming italic capitals; and an introduction to both Swing and Modern Gothic handwriting. With just a little practice, children can make eye-catching signs, design their own personal stationery, address colorful envelopes in elegant script, and create calligraphic pictures and other decorations to hang on the wall.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful and creative book.......2007-05-16
What a delightful and creative book. I find it thorough, easy to follow, beautifully illustrated, and filled with great ideas for projects. I am also delighted by the author's sense of humour. I think it is an excellent book for adults as well as children.
Calligraphy Made Simple.......2007-04-23
Although Booklist and School Library Journal suggest this for older children, I think the text level is best for adults and probably teens.
Years ago, I taught myself a basic calligraphy alphabet, but never felt really satisfied with my results. This book helps me see where I was going wrong. She shows the effects of improper pen position, explains how to space the letters, and how to get a lighter-weight look and a heavier-weight look.
The alphabets demonstrated in the book include italic, italic capitals, italic handwriting, swing gothic, modern gothic, and modern gothic capitals. The last part of the book gives project ideas (stationery, making signs, calligrams, writing larger).
I have a better idea of what I'm doing now and with practice, I'll be happier with my lettering for cards and scrapbooks.
1-2-3 Calligraphy.......2007-04-04
This is a charming and informative book for anyone, not just kids, interested in learning how to actually do calligraphy, not just admiring the beauty of the lettering. I love this book, and have found it greatly helpful, informative, and entertaining as well. I give it my highest reommendation.
OK but not great.......2007-01-03
This book did not deliver the promised child-oriented teaching style. i expected something different from other calligraphy books but did not get it. As a calligraphy instruction book it is fine; as a book especially for children it is not fine.

Another Excellent S:aab book!.......2000-12-08
Demolition Winter (Space : Above and Beyond) by Peter Telep takes the S:AaB universe another step forward by giving the characters more depth than a 45 minute episode ever could.
It is also faithful to Morgan and Wong (the Producer's) vision for S:AaB, which is a relief.
The characters show how young and inexperienced they are, as adults and yet they manage to survive and work together to complete their mission.
This S:AaB book is well worth the cover price and is a great read for anyone who loves S:AaB or just loves a good military story.
Demolition Winter.......2000-10-07
Okay. First I just want to say I'm not UNDER 13, I'm 13. I just ain't buying anything here. Anyway, the book:
Demolition Winter was great. It had all what the Show Space: Above and Beyond had. Danger, action, romance, humor...everything. The only thing that troubles me is that the characters seems differnt. Shane is all the sudden angry and let it go out on the squadron, Damphousse (the Engieneer) know less than Wang about planes and stuff...and McQueen is all smussy. This is not our Ty. But the book is nevertheless good. And Nathan has never been better.
AWSOME.......1999-11-04
GOSH I LOVE SAAB AND THIS IS A GREAT ON
An Excellent SAAB Sniper-Mission Novel!.......1999-04-27
this was a wonderful SAAB novel! since only 26-odd hours were ever produced, reading this adventure was very special. the 58th is stuck on an alien planet on a sabotage mission, and things just keep getting worse! this was an excellent novel that like J.R.R. Tolkein takes the time to describe the land the characters are moving through, so the reader is really put involved in the action. plus, a friendly Silicate is with the 58 which makes for great character interaction. this novel takes place just before the final episode and actually feels like an 'arc' episode of the show only with a much larger budget. if you've EVER seen SAAB, read this novel and enjoy!
If you liked the series, you'll love the book........1998-07-30
It is so nice to be able to read about the further adventures of the Wild Cards. Ever since Fox dropped the series, the fans have been totally left hanging. Demolition Winter will leave you begging for more.

Hit and miss, but mostly hit.......2007-01-12
KA is best known as a novelist, but his short fiction, here in "BTC" is quite engaging. It's too bad this book is not more widely available. Kafka is a strong influence throughout - somewhat shamelessly at times, but who cares: good writing is good writing. 'Intruders' is the best in the collection, about a strange family that knocks on a man's apartment door in the middle of the night and proceeds to take over his apartment and life, making him into a sort of servant. In the opening story, a man comes home to find a corpse in his bed. His decision making is engaging. A few of the stories are duds, but that's generally the case. Worth the time, if you like KA's novels, and Japanese fiction, especially Murakami, who was clearly influenced by KA.
Beyond realism.......2004-04-08
This collection of short stories, translated from the Japanese by Juliet Winters Carpenter, is a surreal foray into the illogical and improbable. Kobo Abe is the kind of writer who reminds one of other writers. His Kafkaesque "An Irrelevant Death" places an unexplained corpse in the apartment of A- who must then decide how to dispose of it without suspicion. In another story that recalls Kafka, "Dendrocacalia," a man named Common experiences an unexpected metamorphosis into a rare and sought-after plant. But not all stories evoke Kafka. "The Life of a Poet" embraces the lyrical mythology of Latin American magic realism as a crone is accidentally made into thread and a deadly snow falls made of "crystalline dreams, souls, and desires." Lewis Carroll's convoluted logic surfaces in "The Bet" when an architect for a particular demanding advertising company discovers a world of small doors, head-shaking conversations, and stairs that lead not to an expected succession of floors but instead to places governed by a red light and adages. The bizarre building teaches the architect the logic of the illogical. When he designs "the path of the president's office as a mathematical function of the System," he resolves the story in an entirely fitting way.
Despite the derivative feel to these stories, they are distinctly Abe's. His Japanese sensibilities give them a different twist, for while Kafka chose to change his character into a cockroach, Abe chooses instead to transform his bewildered character into a scrubby plant that grows at high altitudes and which would be quite at home in a government funded hothouse. The author's confidence in the wildness of his imagination gives these stories an authority of voice, allowing for the needed suspension of disbelief. Abe's fictional realm is a difficult one to leave.
It took me a couple of stories to fully appreciate Abe's talents, but I'm glad I continued reading. Readers of Japanese and international fiction should most definitely take a look at Abe's work. Don't expect realism - or anything close to it - because Kobo Abe's fiction exists on another plane.
Really good.......2003-12-02
I really recommend this book, although I only gave it four stars because the stories might be too similar to each other for my taste. I'd like just a little more variety in the range of emotions and plot twists. It is easy to say that Abe is good, of course, because he is such a widely recognized writer. I'd like to say, though, that he is so good that he can actually make a reader angry (many of his stories create a feeling of boxed-in, controlled frustration I never encountered in any other writer).
One of Japan's greatest literary exports!.......1999-03-06
Beyond the Curve by Kobo Abe is one of the best compilations of short stories I've read. His style is like a blend of Rod Serling, Stephen King and Salvador Dali. Each tale is strange and unique and tests the limits of your imagination. As much as I like his other books, this one is my favorite because it runs the gamut of his storytelling style from novels like Woman in the Dunes to the outrageously surreal Kangaroo Notebook. If you haven't read any of Abe's work, Beyond the Curve is a great introduction.
