The members felt that this book could be a mini series television show. It reminded us of Roots and The Color Purple. The reading started off slow, but soon picked up. This book challenges your mind. An interesting plot that displays good versus evil. This showed signs of a seasoned writer by evidence of writing style progression as the book progressed. It left the members asking themselves what is the satisfaction that they're searching for.

This book is like eating a full and hearty meal of meat and potatoes. Ms. Cooper develops her characters so completely that they never lost momentum throughout each generation. Sometimes we make life choices, but somestimes life makes the choice for us. In the end, I began to miss Hosanna. I still do. Thank you Ms. Cooper for letting the world get to know these characters. I felt like a warm cup of coffee while reading this book.

The Lord of Perfect Satisfaction (Ruyijun zhuan), a short work of fiction from the early sixteenth century, tells the story of the Tang Dynasty's notorious Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule as emperor of China. It is famous not for the history it relates, but for its graphic sexual descriptions--the first ever in a Chinese novel--purportedly given from a woman's point of view. For the next century, most works that include explicit sexual descriptions refer to the Ruyijun zhuan or employ some of its vocabulary.

Despite its renown and unmistakable influence on later writing, the origins and significance of the Ruyijun zhuan have never been explored, in any language, and until now it has never been translated. Its date of composition is unknown, its author unidentified. One of its earliest appraisals, written by a contemporary scholar known for his conservatism, maintains that the Ruyijun zhuan is a moral work notwithstanding its sexual content. Combining a complete translation with a detailed and far-ranging study of the text, The Fountainhead of Chinese Erotica places this important cultural document into historical context and offers possibilities on its possible meaning. Charles Stone's meticulous work reveals the Ruyijun zhuan's author to be a scholar of Tang history who employed a wide range of historical and classical allusions that serve as a surprisingly subtle commentary on the actions of central characters.

The Fountainhead of Chinese Erotica is a scrupulously researched, critically sophisticated, and urbane work of scholarship that illuminates an important primary text and Chinese erotic writings in general.

I had very little idea what this book was about - a translation and commentary on the Ruyijun zhuan, plus whatever clue lies in the title. I got a lot more than I expected.

The central part of this book is the promised translation. The fiction in it turned out to be based loosely (maybe very loosely) on the historical life of emperor Wu Zitian. She was not only the one female emperor in China's history, according to the translator's notes, but an erratic, brutal, and debauched libertine. Some historians credit her excesses with the fall of the Tang empire. As a result, her brazen personal life made a good foundation for a sexually outrageous story. So did history's view of her, somewhat like Shakespeare's Richard III, as a character that could be vilified safely.

Despite its explicitness, Stone is careful to point out that this is not pornography in any meaningful sense. It contains many literate allusions to history and to the classic texts, unlike the mindless "organ recitals" before and after it. And, unlike those lesser works, its imagery is not centered on physicality brought to completion. Instead, there are odd interruptions in the story and wide variations in the level of descriptive detail.

Stone's commentary adds a lot to the reader's appreciation of this brief (45 page), bawdy story. He fills in the historical context that makes the Ruyijun zhuan make sense, and positions it with respect to later works that plagiarize heavily from it. He also addresses the mystery of its author, making a strong case for Huang Xun - a prim, proper, and otherwise unlikely functionary of the early/mid sixteenth century.

Stone's copious footnotes alternate between dry bibliographic references and insightful notes on historical context or untranslatable wordplay. His commentary, the large majority of the text, is generally lively and interesting. This book reads somewhat like a doctoral dissertation. If that's what it is, it's among the better written ones. It's also the best expression I've seen of an author having plain old fun in work that a lesser researcher would have rendered dry and dull.

    As other reviewers have mentioned, the story does seem a bit weak - the 2 leads become super-close friends in about 2 pages' worth of story, with no real explanation given. I have been trying to learn to draw manga just because I've been reading so much of it lately...so I'm noticing illustration quality a lot more...some of these illustrations (most notably faces in 3/4 profile) are rather poorly-drawn, either looking too flat, or the dimensions are clearly off, or whatever.

    But I do like the guys in the story, and the little mysteries are interesting, so I will probably continue with this series. Just not at a breakneck pace like I did with "Ouran."

    This manga looks like it has all the right elements for a cute fun boy love manga. It has the cute crossdressing uke with the tragic past, the cool model seme with a split personality, and a detective/Jack-of-all-trades job that brings them together. It's a great set up.... but it doesn't work. It feels empty, the characters are boring, the missions are cheesy, and the relationship is all jumpy. They go from just meeting to risking their lives for each other with no inbetween. Also it feels like either the writing or the translations are off. Like there were big pieces of the story missing or something. Plus the art was pretty bad, not the worst, but not as good as the cover art. All in all, if your looking for a cute boy love series try Gravitation, Our Kingdom, Challengers, or Shout Out Loud (Or Hana-Kimi for a touch of bl, shojo series).

    I really enjoyed Sequence so I was looking forward to this one which doesn't waste time hooking our guys up, although, at least in Vol 1, it is solidly BL with no bedroom action. Lots of humor as is usual with the genre.
    Shima's the elder(uke) of the pair-18 or 20 & scarred by his parents dying in a fire to where smoke or fire sends him into a panic. Kaori is 16-still in school. Mom was the obsessive stage mom so he developed Kyo, his model persona which, prior to meeting Shima, Kaori feared would take over so his real self would vanish forever. It's another jack-of-all-trades agency not unlike we see in GetBackers, Trash & Skyscrapers of Oz. Snowman's actually just the first case-there are 4 or 5 cases as I recall-we meet the agency's rival in the second from the last-heiress being threatened, keeps being saved by APP, a popular internet jack-of-all-trades & also something of a split personality like Kyo & he plays competition in the last case. There are no big mysteries here, but that's not what we're looking for.
    It's breezy BL fare fans of the lighter side of Gravitation should like.

              Unsatisfied with his Las Vegas lowlife joke lifestyle, Cocky McRae steals $1.6 million from a mobster who quickly sends his top torpedo to kill Cocky. To lay low, Cocky hides in Charlotte, the home he left twenty years previously. But the sleepy North Carolina town that Cocky knew has become a ravenous city and a variety of miscreants soon create hassles for the native. Brooks Cornelius IV is a starched-shirt commercial banker with MegaBank, the whopping Charlotte corporation with world financial domination on its agenda. His client on the ropes and his family life in disarray, Brooks bumps into his high school buddy, Cocky McRae, and things slide quickly downhill.               This wild, hilarious ride through the underbelly of the staid New South City of Charlotte presents a readily identifiable crew of bankers, country clubbers, prep school natives, and topless dancers. All brought together by the suave, yet one-step-from disaster Cocky McCrae, whose on-the-run-from-Vegas-toughies homecoming becomes a fast-paced, booze-filled romp. The effect of Martin's novel? Awakening from a roofie: You've been hit. How bad is the damage? Where's your wallet? A welcome voice to the lit scene, and as far from chick lit as Kansas to the beach. Get it, read it.
