Book Description
The Death called Change is an extraordinary story of the decisions people make to triumph over the inevitable. In the mid-eighties, the retirement housing industry underwent a massive and sudden change. This is the story of three people who, each for their own reasons, needed to see Freden Home survive but felt helpless before the onslaught of powerful intruders into their idyllic existence. Wendell Stern, admissions counselor at Freden Home, finds himself in the position of trying to convince older people to give up their homes to move into Freden even though he is convinced that Freden will not survive. This is an evocative portrait of a man caught by forces he cannot control. How much of his personal integrity is he willing to give up to save this home for the residents who trust him and for the woman he loves? R. Z. Halleson gives us a profound look into an industry that few people know anything about. This amazing first novel is right-on in its portrayal of elderly people who see death happening all around them but who live as if today is all that counts. The Death called Change is compassionate and utterly convincing.

Kind of scary, in a way.......2005-03-23
I don't usually read this type of book, but my mom just went into a nursing home so I thought it might be helpful. It was. It alerted me to a lot of the problems that older people have, especially if they don't have kids to take care of them. The book was about managment as much as it was about the elderly people in these homes. Yes, it was somewhat historical, but a lot of it was also about things that go on today. I'm glad I read it. It has made me think more about what I will do when I am old.
The Death Called Change.......2004-05-20
I enjoyed Halleson's book a lot, both for the characters the author developed and for the insights the book provided into the retirement industry. The author did a fine job of interwearing Wendell Stern's dual roles as marketing professional and dedicated parent. Eighty-something-year-old friend Suzy helped add a lot of human texture to Wendell's character. The ending was somehow quite satisfying.
A most unusual historical novel!.......2003-07-31
The Death Called Change is a one-of-a-kind novel. I've never read anything quite this courageous in depicting what people go through in end-of-life decisions. The story takes place in the early 80s when the retirement home industry is undergoing massive changes in the services that it offers to elderly people. Small retirement homes cannot keep up with the new, more efficient and modern services that are coming onto the scene. This story is about one man, Wendell Stern who, almost seventy himself, is working as an admissions counsellor trying to convince elderly men and women to move into a retirement home that he knows is going under. Desperate to keep his job because he knows he can't find another one at his age, he is caught between trying to serve his employer and yet being honest with older people who no longer want to keep up a house and are looking for an easier lifestyle. R. Z. Halleson has given us a look into an industry that few of us know much about. While it points to the advent of the many excellent choices that older people have today, the era of change was painful indeed.

Some people are never happy!.......2006-06-28
I just happened to finish reading Ray Fraser's "Featherless Wings" and wanted to see how his book was doing on amazon.com. As is habit, I checked all his books for rankings. You can imagine my surprise when I saw the review from the reader in Vermont.
It would appear that the writer was a woman, but one can never tell. The reviewer has a note that says "check all my reviews." Before you accept their opinion of this book, check their other reviews. They don't like anything. In fact, the only thing they like is the book light which they reviewed.
Some people live lives of quiet desperation. It appears this reviewer has more problems than even Sean Thomas could handle. Everyone I know who has read Ray's books, loves them.
Do yourself a favor and pass on the Vermont reviewer's opinion.
Tanalising.......2004-07-24
Tantalisingly wonderful until the end...I read it in one sitting..could not put it down...excellent writing.
This one is worth reading.......2003-08-04
The book started out like a short story from high school. The author was blunt and forward. But it soon grabbed my attention, the characters became real, the plot riveting. The story had twists and turns some I saw coming others I didn't. I recommend this book to those who like mysteries and suspense. I can't wait to read the next book.
The Best Kept Secret In Michigan.......2003-06-19
Ray is not only a gifted spirit medium, he's also a great writer. A Change Called Death will keep your heart pounding as you race to turn to the next page. This book has it all, and the ending will take you completely by surprise.
Could not put it down!.......2003-06-13
Absolutely captivating! Once started, I literally could not put this book down! The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, anxious of what would unfold as I turned the page...The mix of tragedy, suspense, humor and the exploration of the "unknown", left me wanting more...so I just HAD to get the next book...Kindred Flock...I HIGHLY recommend both of these books and look forward to Ray Fraser's next book in this series!!!
