While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely blasphemy to some, but to others it's a coming-of-age story of the highest order.

Joshua (a.k.a. Jesus) knows he is unique and quite alone in his calling, but what exactly does his Father want of him? Taking liberties with ancient history, Moore works up an adventure tale as Biff and Joshua seek out the three wise men so that Joshua can better understand what he is supposed to do as Messiah. Biff, a capable sinner, tags along and gives Joshua ample opportunities to know the failings and weaknesses of being truly human. With a wit similar to Douglas Adams, Moore pulls no punches: a young Biff has the hots for Joshua's mom, Mary, which doesn't amuse Josh much: "Don't let anyone ever tell you that the Prince of Peace never struck anyone." And the origin of the Easter Bunny is explained as a drunken Jesus gushes his affection for bunnies, declaring, "Henceforth and from now on, I decree that whenever something bad happens to me, there shall be bunnies around."

One small problem with the narrative is that Biff and Joshua often do not have distinct voices. A larger difficulty is that as the tone becomes more somber with Joshua's life drawing to its inevitable close, the one-liners, though not as numerous, seem forced. True to form, Lamb keeps the story of Joshua light, even after its darkest moments. --Michael Ferch

Book Description

The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" (Philadelphia Inquirer).

Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more -- except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdala -- and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, insightful, and one of the funniest books I've ever read.......2007-06-25

This book is great. After the hillarious Practical Demonkeeping, I was expecting a really funny book, but I had no idea I would enjoy this so much. Every ounce of it is written with whit and its packed with more puns, irony and great one liners then can be found anywhere else.

Moore comes up with an excellent idea in filling the missing gap of Jesus'(actually Yeshua or Joshua as he is called in the book) life between birth and in his thirties. The POV of Lamb, and the one chosen to write this gospel is Levi who is called Biff, Christ's best friend. Biff is resurrected sometime after the new millenium and under orders of Christ himself, he provides a wonderfully detailed gospel. Of course, he doesn't have much of a choice as he has been kidnapped by the angel who resurrected him and forced to write in a hotel room while said angel watches soap operas.

The first part of the book has so many laugh out loud moments that I had to stop reading it in front of people because I kept getting weird looks. That humor maintains throughout Lamb, but as the story progresses it becomes surprisingly heartfelt and you can tell that Moore isn't writing the book as a mockery of the New Testament, but as a "what if" that happens to be really funny. He admits himself that most of the story is made up as no one really knows what Jesus did during the lost 20+ years, but its as plausible as anything else someone could come up with. And despite the fact that this is humorous fiction, you can actually learn quite a bit about the time period. He inserts all kinds of facts about what life was like in Jerusalem during the 1st century as well as in the East, where Joshua and Biff went to seek the three wisemen and learn from their ways.

To summarize, this story has everything: humor, insight, Chinese concubines, martial arts, elephants that do yoga all in a great epic tale. We learn how sarcasm was invented, as well as who first thought to flavor coffee with milk (that was Biff.) And one of my favorite parts is a nice tie in to Practical Demonkeeping. This will go on my shelf and remain one of my favorite books of all time. Read this book and give it to everyone you know that reads. Regardless of weather or not you are religous, everyone can get something out of Lamb.

5 out of 5 stars OMG.......2007-06-24

I have to say that I laughed while reading this book, it truly is funny. Did it reaffirm my faith? Not really, but it's kind of cool to think that the Son of God had a sense of humor and a devilish sidekick.

5 out of 5 stars Really a Keeper.......2007-06-17

This book really stayed with me. I originally took it out of the library because I wasn't sure how I'd react to the story. All I knew was that the subject matter, the life of Christ-starting from boyhood-told from the viewpoint of his best friend, was something that struck me as intriguing. It not only made me curious as to how an author would handle an idea like that, it also surprised me that it looked as if the story was being told with a large amount of humor.

I had never read a book by Christopher Moore before. Normally I read books with a serious tone, and I'm a huge fan of vampire fiction. A friend bought me a copy of BLOODSUCKING FIENDS, in an attempt, I think, to introduce me to reading where I could "lighten up." Now curious, I sought out other books by Moore. The one I chose to read first was LAMB. Even though there was indeed much of the book where I did giggle (the part with Lazarus had me outright laughing, and replaying in my head for days) all of the seriousness and sorrowful elements of Jesus' life was dealt with as well in this book. I mean, we know how the story ends, and it is far from comical. I found nothing in this book offensive, and thought Moore handled his portrayal of Jesus with respect. He also made it believable since Jesus did indeed start life as a human being-granted, the most special kind-but human nontheless.

Since early childhood, I have always been involved in a book. Only a handful have made me laugh. Only one had me cry. This one is the first that had done both. When a book moves you that much, and stays with you so strongly, how can you not own it?

5 out of 5 stars Lamb is the Funniest Book Ever.......2007-06-16

This is by far, the funniest book that I have ever read. The author never strays from the fact that Joshua is the Son of God but brings humor to Joshua's life and gives the reader a fictional look at the human side of Christ. Reading Lamb actually has brought me closer to God because of a peek (although fictional) into Joshua's time here on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2007-06-14

It is just entertaining. No book has ever made me laugh so hard. I get the giggles just thinking about it. and it does make you think "what if?". I love that Christopher Moore writes with such audacity and cleverness. I'll admit that the ending was a little lacking, and fizzled out. But the rest of the book is what made me a CM fan. I've begun reading all of his other books and he's now definitely one of my favorite authors.

5 out of 5 stars Best out there for MAMMALIAN virology.......2005-01-27

My take on this two-volume set is that if you are going to put out as much money as this set costs, you should get a lot for it. This two- volume set is simply the best I have found for MAMMALIAN virology, with a close second being 'Fundamental Virology'. I stress the mammalian virology, as it omits a good bit (if not all) of the plant- associated virii. The basics of all virus structure are in there, regarding plant virii, but beyond that, there is information lacking. Despite this, when purchased as a graduate-level or upper-undergraduate level text or reference guide, there simply is no other text of this scale. There is a lot more text than graphics, but this does not (in my opinion) deter from the value of the text. If I could, I'd give a 4.5 star of 5, only for the lack of plant virii information and my personal desire for more graphics. i will say that the CD-Rom has more than enough graphics to make up for the book's seeming lack of graphics. As a 'financially- burdened' Pathology trainee and Virologist by employment, I will say that this is worth the price and effort to read. Note that it is written to the biologist who has some knowledge, albeit foundational knowledge, of biology.

4 out of 5 stars A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK.......2003-02-20

There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

5 out of 5 stars Another Bible. Amazing viral world.......1998-02-01

It covers all fields of virology. Perfect and wonderful ! Easy to understand. I really recommend this book to who is involved in biology

Discover the origins of one of the most feared villains of all time in Thomas Harris's Hannibal Rising, a novel that promises to reveal the "evolution of Hannibal Lecter's evil." Thomas Harris first introduced readers to Hannibal Lecter in Red Dragon, a tale wrapped around FBI agent Will Graham (the man who hunted Lecter down) and his ability to "get inside the mind of the killer." Graham consults Dr. Lecter (the man who nearly killed him) on the case, and the legend of the nefarious Dr. Lecter was born. Harris's masterful and mesmerizing follow up, The Silence of the Lambs wowed fans, but it was Jonathan Demme's terrifying, Oscar-winning (Best Actor, Actress, Director, Picture and Adapted Screenplay) film, and Anthony Hopkins's extraordinary (and arguably over the top) performance that made "Hannibal the Cannibal" a household name. Hannibal, the third book in the Lecter saga made Lecter the prey and seemingly wrapped up the tale of the cannibalistic psychiatrist, but never revealed the source of the doctor's...gifts. Fans have been waiting decades to find out how the good doctor became "death's prodigy," making Hannibal Rising one of the most anticipated books of 2006 (and movies of 2007). --Daphne Durham

Hannibal Rising: An Excerpt

Prologue

The door to Dr. Hannibal Lecter's memory palace is in the darkness at the center of his mind and it has a latch that can be found by touch alone. This curious portal opens on immense and well-lit spaces, early baroque, and corridors and chambers rivaling in number those of the Topkapi Museum.

Everywhere there are exhibits, well-spaced and lighted, each keyed to memories that lead to other memories in geometric progression.

Spaces devoted to Hannibal Lecter's earliest years differ from the other archives in being incomplete. Some are static scenes, fragmentary, like painted Attic shards held together by blank plaster. Other rooms hold sound and motion, great snakes wrestling and heaving in the dark and lit in flashes. Pleas and screaming fill some places on the grounds where Hannibal himself cannot go. But the corridors do not echo screaming, and there is music if you like.

The palace is a construction begun early in Hannibal's student life. In his years of confinement he improved and enlarged his palace, and its riches sustained him for long periods while warders denied him his books.

Here in the hot darkness of his mind, let us feel together for the latch. Finding it, let us elect for music in the corridors and, looking neither left nor right, go to the Hall of the Beginning where the displays are most fragmentary.

We will add to them what we have learned elsewhere, in war records and police records, from interviews and forensics and the mute postures of the dead. Robert Lecter's letters, recently unearthed, may help us establish the vital statistics of Hannibal, who altered dates freely to confound the authorities and his chroniclers. By our efforts we may watch as the beast within turns from the teat and, working upwind, enters the world.

Chapter 6

Lothar heard it first as he drew water, the roar of an engine in low gear and cracking of branches. He left the bucket on the well and in his haste he came into the lodge without wiping his feet.

A Soviet tank, a T-34 in winter camouflage of snow and straw, crashed up the horse trail and into the clearing. Painted on the turret in Russian were AVENGE OUR SOVIET GIRLS and WIPE OUT THE FASCIST VERMIN. Two soldiers in white rode on the back over the radiators. The turret swiveled to point the tank's cannon at the house. A hatch opened and a gunner in hooded winter white stood behind a machine gun. The tank commander stood in the other hatch with a megaphone. He repeated his message in Russian and in German, barking over the diesel clatter of the tank engine.

"We want water, we will not harm you or take your food unless a shot comes from the house. If we are fired on, every one of you will die. Now come outside. Gunner, lock and load. If you do not see faces by the count of ten, fire." A loud clack as the machine gun's bolt went back.

Count Lecter stepped outside, standing straight in the sunshine, his hands visible. "Take the water. We are no harm to you."

The tank commander put his megaphone aside. "Everyone outside where I can see you."

The count and the tank commander looked at each other for a long moment. The tank commander showed his palms.

The count showed his palms. The count turned to the house. "Come."

When the commander saw the family he said, "The children can stay inside where it's warm."

And to his gunner and crew, "Cover them. Watch the upstairs windows. Start the pump. You can smoke."

The machine gunner pushed up his goggles and lit a cigarette. He was no more than a boy, the skin of his face paler around his eyes. He saw Mischa peeping around the door facing and smiled at her.

Among the fuel and water drums lashed to the tank was a small petrol-powered pump with a rope starter.

The tank driver snaked a hose with a screen filter down the well and after many pulls on the rope the pump clattered, squealed, and primed itself.

The noise covered the scream of the Stuka dive bomber until it was almost on them, the tank's gunner swiveling his muzzle around, cranking hard to elevate his gun, firing as the airplane's winking cannon stitched the ground. Rounds screamed off the tank, the gunner hit, still firing with his remaining arm.

The Stuka's windscreen starred with fractures, the pilot's goggles filled with blood and the dive bomber, still carrying one of its eggs, hit treetops, plowed into the garden and its fuel exploded, cannon under the wings still firing after the impact. Hannibal, on the floor of the lodge, Mischa partly under him, saw his mother lying in the yard, bloody and her dress on fire.

"Stay here!" to Mischa and he ran to his mother, ammunition in the airplane cooking off now, slow and then faster, casings flying backward striking the snow, flames licking around the remaining bomb beneath the wing. The pilot sat in the cockpit, dead, his face burned to a death's head in flaming scarf and helmet, his gunner dead behind him.

Lothar alone survived in the yard and he raised a bloody arm to the boy. Then Mischa ran to her mother, out into the yard and Lothar tried to reach her and pull her down as she passed, but a cannon round from the flaming plane slammed through him, blood spattering the baby and Mischa raised her arms and screamed into the sky. Hannibal heaped snow onto the fire in his mother's clothes, stood up and ran to Mischa amid the random shots and carried her into the lodge, into the cellar. The shots outside slowed and stopped as bullets melted in the breeches of the cannon. The sky darkened and snow came again, hissing on the hot metal.

Darkness, and snow again. Hannibal among the corpses, how much later he did not know, snow drifting down to dust his mother's eyelashes and her hair. She was the only corpse not blackened and crisped. Hannibal tugged at her, but her body was frozen to the ground. He pressed his face against her. Her bosom was frozen hard, her heart silent. He put a napkin over her face and piled snow on her. Dark shapes moved at the edge of the woods. His torch reflected on wolves' eyes. He shouted at them and waved a shovel. Mischa was determined to come out to her mother—he had to choose. He took Mischa back inside and left the dead to the dark.

Mr. Jakov's book was undamaged beside his blackened hand until a wolf ate the leather cover and amid the scattered pages of Huyghens' Treatise on Light licked Mr. Jakov's brains off the snow. Hannibal and Mischa heard snuffling and growling outside. Hannibal built up the fire. To cover the noise he tried to get Mischa to sing; he sang to her. She clutched his coat in her fists.

"Ein Mannlein . . ."

Snowflakes on the windows. In the corner of a pane, a dark circle appeared, made by the tip of a glove. In the dark circle a pale blue eye.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book--intricately detailed yet quick........2007-06-27

I can't believe the negative criticism. Very good book--intricately detailed yet quick. One review I read, I think, hit the nail on the head:

"Perhaps in the end it is this effort that has warranted Harris some of his negative reviews. In horror as in life, nothing is more terrifying than the unopened door." (from Steve Reina)

Hannibal Rising lets the cat out of the bag. Hannibal has an almost supernatural quality to his elegant brand of atrocity. Now all his mythos is made mortal, and that has annoyed some people.

Harris DID change his style with extensive use of sentence fragments to capture a more stream-of-consciousness effect. Some passages were difficult to follow, but I feel this is a need by Mr. Harris to evolve as a writer, constructing a more terse style than his previous works (and yes, I've read all his previous, except, oddly enough, Silence of the Lambs--suppose I just saw the movie too many times.)

I highly recommend Hannibal Rising. Just throw away your presupposition.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING, AND EXPLAINS SO MUCH; ANSWERS MY QUESTIONS.......2007-06-27

Re the beginnings of Hannibal Lecter, a blend of aristocracy and brilliance mixed with utter depravity and madness. IMO, THE most interesting and bizarre literary figure ever to emerge from the mind of an author. Since I first became acquainted with Dr Lecter in Silence of the Lambs I have been hooked, and under the spell of the character. I marvel at Thomas Harris who has crafted a truly memorable character and produced different phases of his life and now we have what went into the development and creation of such a man. Now we understand; note understand, not condone, his monstrous appetites. I have wondered and speculated on how he came to be from the beginning, SOTL, and now I have my answers.
Yes, of course we have sympathy for the devil here, subjected to horrors of war as a child, and forced to endure brutalities and deprivation no child should ever even know about, let alone experience first hand. Hannibal endures, however, but not without permanent scars and a particularly dangerous homicidal bent. His cannibalism, the fact his blood pressure never changes no matter what atrocity he commits; his horrific indifference to the tremendous suffering he causes, incidents such as: having been injected with sodium pentothal in hopes of finding out where he buried a Princeton student he gives a recipe for dip, his stopping to conduct a passage in a piece of musical after slaughtering two police officers, his face still splattered with their blood; all are explained here.
The fact that Clarice Starling affects him like no other is also fascinating, and what a shame the movie Hannibal failed to keep Harris's original ending...a craven pandering to the general public; yes, we accept Hannibal and want to see him, but on OUR terms, not Harris's.
So this study on the ingredients that comprise the adult Hannibal is one I find just fascinating and wholly satisfying; I only hope Harris produces more of this Hannibal journey and when subsequent movies are made, please stay true to the novel; after all, who knows this character better than his creator?

3 out of 5 stars Could have been great!.......2007-06-22

I was so excited to see that Hannibal Rising was coming out. I read the others a few years back and LOVED them - Red Dragon is still one of my favorite books of all time - so I was just thrilled for the release of Rising. As soon as I got it I scoped out a quiet place and started it, and it was pretty good. But as I got more into it, I realized that what I loved about Red Dragon was just not there in Hannibal Rising. All in all I believe Hannibal Rising is an okay story - just not what I've come to expect. The book was so-so, the movie was okay - just expected more.

4 out of 5 stars Rather Good Despite Criticism.......2007-06-19

I am rather familiar with Thomas Harris's series throughout the Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon and now Hannibal's Rising which is a glance into the past of the doctor who is Hannibal Lector. This book gives a deeper insight into the mind of Hannibal Lector and will without a doubt draw in theorists and those interested in such things as developmental psychology. Glancing into a traumatic past including dealings with the Nazi, the death of his parents and more haunts his days as he holds away the information in his own mental room that is described in the first chapter.

This book shows a more intellectual and deep approach towards the mind and understanding of the elusive cannibal Hannibal, and yet critics seem to be smashing this thread to bits over it's lack of action and the teeth grinding suspense that the other books hold. This book is a representation of his earlier life and in a manner brings a humane look into the character. Perhaps people don't want to see him as humane? The possibilities are immense, but much like puzzling thinking films or compositions: this book is for those who wish to sit down and curl up with a book as they get lost in the events that created the monster.

4 out of 5 stars It could and should have been better, a lot better........2007-06-17

Apart from the fact that Thomas Harris situates the birth and rising of his « monster » in Europe, which could mean Europe is the hatchery of all American monsters, the book is fascinating from the very start. It is a perfect idea to situate Hannibal Lecter's making in Europe during the second world war, what's more in Lithuania, the small Baltic country long trapped between Germany and Russia, or the Soviet Union if you prefer, at least for a while. The novel shows, or gives a glimpse at what some locals or non-locals, Germans or non-Germans did during that period; killing, looting, cannibalism why not, torturing, raping, for any reason whatsoever but always dominated by the survival instinct which should be renamed for them the survival death instinct. But the book shows how people also shift from one system to the next in no time and with little resistance. Good too is the French case of a cop that became a supporter of Vichy during the war and then moved to the anti-German resistance, unluckily not as most did that is to say by just following orders and not becoming a real member of any resistance movement, and then later a supporter of de Gaulle after the war, or even the communists or the socialists, or whatever. The case is suggested: where were you when the Gestapo collected Jewish kids and sent them to Auschwitz not to come back? Where were you when the trains departed? Some of these cops made small fortunes by closing their eyes provided a silver spoon or a silver fork passed from Jewish hands to their own hands unseen and unnoticed from the hierarchy. There is even the case of a "sub-prefect", second in rank in a regional administrative structure, who actually sent trains to Auschwitz and yet became a Minister under de Gaulle in the sixties and a Minister of Giscard d'Estaing in the seventies. He only got into troubles, in court and in prison, in the nineties. You can imagine what it was at lower echelons. The book misses the case even if it alludes to it. It is too easy to concentrate only on Germans and Lithuanians and Russians. The trauma suffered by Hannibal Lecter who saw his sister being cooked and eaten by his torturers, looters and executioners and who of course knows, even if he does not want to admit it, that he ate part of her since he was kept alive in order to be eaten in his turn if necessary, is essential to explain his later mood and psychological state. But in this situation Hannibal had to develop a calculating mind, and the book, alas not at the beginning but later on, after some experience, shows quite deadly shortcomings in the character, shortcomings that should have had him killed, and his stepmother too, if he and she had not been saved by the bell, by sheer circumstances. In other words the trauma was not effective enough to produce a "monster" of calculation. His success is thus purely accidental. Too bad. What's more Harris' vision of the communists, be they Soviet communists or French communists, is very poor even a caricature. He does not show the deeply-rooted ideology and dream in them and thus misses his target completely: how can university professors or intellectuals support a student accused of the worst possible crimes, even if motivated by the crimes of the victims? And that makes the end of the novel: sloppy, too fast, too superficial. What was believable up to page 250 becomes too hard to believe in the last 100 pages. In fact Harris misses one essential element: even in the worst situations, even under the worst traumas, a human being remains a human being and when he gets beyond the line of sanity or crime he retains one essential human characteristic: calculation and planning, be it only to survive, because this characteristic is basically that of all animals multiplied in a human being by his intelligence and mental capabilities. In other words even the worst criminal remains human somewhere. Harris too easily tags (a dog tag of some kind) his character, his Hannibal Lecter, a "monster", but that is nothing but a tag, a word and it explains nothing. What is a monster? What is a barbarian? And isn't Jesus a monster of humanity or humanism or vision? Hannibal Lecter would have been a lot better in his rising if he had retained his human and even humane qualities, be it only to show the conflict between or among his various motivations and the way one psychological drive takes over and uses the others to get to perfection in his own project and action. It does not reach the level of the previous novels about Hannibal.

The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth reawakens a surprising ancient view of the Eucharist, as the harbinger of the supernatural drama described by the New Testament book of Revelation. Catholic theologian Scott Hahn thinks that many worshippers receive the sacrament of communion without ever considering its links to the end of the world, the Apocalypse, and the Second Coming. Hahn wants to change our minds; he wants us to know that "The Mass--and I mean every single Mass--is heaven on earth." Literally. So, Hahn declares, "Now heaven has been unveiled for us with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ... Jesus Christ Himself says to you: 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me' (Rv. 3:20)." Hahn's enthusiasm, as evident even from these short quotes, is considerable--and infectious. Furthermore, he delivers his arguments with great levity (demonstrated in chapter titles such as "Oath Meal"), which makes The Lamb's Supper quite a tasty read. --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Truth.......2007-06-27

This book by Scott Hahn reveals the hidden mysteries of the Mass. It has greatly helped me find refreshment in this topsy-turvy world. A virtual oasis in the midst of the modern desert. Now I appreciate the Mass, finding deeper meaning in the actions, symbols, garments and liturgy that one encounters in the Mass. It is so biblical and truly reveals God's love for mankind. A great treasure to own. Truly, heaven has come to earth.

5 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for Scott Hahn.......2007-06-01

I first heard of Scott Hahn from my Scripture class teacher who was a student of Scott Hahn. The one thing he always talked about is how central Scripture is to everything that the Church believes and teaches. I saw this book on my grandmother's bookshelf and asked if I could borrow only because the name sounded familiar and it had a nice cover. I cannot remember the last time I had a read a book in one day. I have heard so many descriptions of the end times that people have come up with based on the Book of Revelation, but Scott Hahn makes evident the central role that the Book of Revelation plays in the most Sacred event in the Church. Hearing details about his conversion story is also very interesting and it seems that every book of his has another detail of his conversion. I haven'[t said much about the contents of this particular book, but that is because my words cannot compare to Scott Hahn's and it would be fruitful to buy or borrow a copy of this book as soon as you can!

5 out of 5 stars I get it now..........2007-05-25

Wow. I thought I understood all the parts of the Mass, but Dr. Hahn gives you the foundation to truly understand and experience the entire Mass as an active participation in the eternal celebration in Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars I Will Never Doze Off During Mass Again.......2007-05-25

I bought this book almost two years ago and it has been in my stack of books to read since then because when I looked closely at it I found that its subject was the Biblical Book of Revelation. Over the years many Evangelical authors have had a field day writing books about their interpretation of this last book in the Bible but I like most Christians have avoided as much as possible any contact with what I considered to be at the very least a confusing and also somewhat scary text. Thankfully I finally picked up this book and read it and I now have a greater appreciation for not only the Book of Revelation but also for the Catholic Mass.

Dr. Hahn has a real talent for making even the deepest theology understandable for the common person and the work that he has done here is truly amazing. Piece by piece and bit by bit Hahn leads his reader through the Book of Revelation and shows its connection to the Mass and by the end of the book he has shown in a very clear way how that this often disconcerting Biblical text is in fact a very clear set of instructions for how Mass should be conducted and how that during the Mass we become one with the residents of Heaven as we join them in worship and praise at the throne of God.

This author is not presenting an original idea here and he never claims that honor. He spends a good deal of time in fact making sure that his readers understand that this doctrine of the Mass as Heaven on earth is an ancient teaching of the Church that has become somewhat lost over the centuries. The thing that is original to Dr. Hahn is the way that he takes a subject that could well be over most of our heads and makes it so clear and so concise that even I was able to follow his thoughts and grasp his meanings. I don't think that any Catholic who reads this book will ever look at Mass in the same way again. I know that I have gained a new appreciation and sense of awe for the Mass and that I feel a renewed sense of desire to attend Mass and by doing so visit Heaven as often as I can.

5 out of 5 stars The Mass as You Never Learned.......2007-05-13

Dr. Hahn provides great insights to the Mass and explains the importance of each element. His enthusiasm for the Mass is contageous. Once you read this book, you will view the Mass differently and thank God for this wonderful gift He has given us.

Tony award-winning Ken Howard (1776, Child's Play) reads I Know This Much Is True with the conviction of a used car salesman and the charm of a seasoned politico. Reminiscent of a former football coach recalling his glory days, Howard's booming, rich voice is a beefy compliment to Lamb's powerful prose. Never to be mistaken as a ventriloquist, Howard makes little distinction when moving in and out of character--his voice barely cracks an octave for dainty female personalities. However, this understatement (so to speak) lends to smooth transitions and believable, down-to-earth narration. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Rebekah Warren

5 out of 5 stars A LIFE-CHANGING READING EVENT..........2007-06-24

Profound, sagacious, and stunning, this book is nothing short of perfect! Lamb's intricate storytelling will make your soul meld with the characters. Reading this novel is like staring at yourself in the mirror, in one way or another... something about each character is bound to resonate with every reader. It is gripping and startling in its honesty and insight... gut-wrenching at times, but always beautiful. Wally Lamb has laid many a universal truth out before our eyes. DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK!

3 out of 5 stars It Comes Undone (spoilers).......2007-06-17

While this is a solid and engrossing read for the first 700 pages or so, it starts to drag a bit after the death of a major character. The rest of the story feels like an epilogue, and the ending is a major letdown. Domenick Birdsey, the main character, endures a series of trials and tribulations worthy of Job (he refers to that) and in the end, everybody is happy. Much like a Dickens novel (but far less convincingly) things are tied together in a nice little bundle, and the surviving characters live happily ever after.

If there's a point to this novel, it appears to be that getting therapy and facing up to your problems are all it takes to put your life in order. I doubt that Wally Lamb had anything quite so simplistic in mind, but if not, his meaning escapes me.

Much of the later part of the book is devoted to the manuscript written by Domenick's grandfather, and I found these segments to be fascinating. I thought Lamb did a great job of evoking a different time and place, and these sequences held my interest at a time when the main story was steadily running out of steam. It's a good demonstration of Lamb's skill that he's able to produce a distinct voice with such clarity. However, it's not clear exactly how this brings Domenick to his marvelous insights.

The connection may be in a supernatural event --- let's call it a miracle --- which occurs once in the grandfather's memoir and then in reverse at the very end of the book. As the rest of the story is realistic, this miracle, which is never given any context or explanation, seems jarringly out of place, a ham-handed attempt to be symbolic.

Since I started to lose interest towards the end, I'd have to say the book was overlong, but it was the ending that annoyed me more than anything else. If a writer wants to say something profound about life, he should avoid facile conclusions. He doesn't have to end it like "Hamlet", but it doesn't have to be a fairy tale, either.

5 out of 5 stars Very memorable story.......2007-06-15

I love this book. The characters are so real. Some parts will be heart-wrenching, other parts will make you laugh. I finished this book a couple of weeks ago and it still comes into my mind. This book is almost 900 pgs and I read it in 3 weeks. Don't let the size scare you, it is worth all the other summer reading you may give up for it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow !! blown away !.......2007-06-10

this is amazing! hearing about the desert storm and Bush Sr's presidental term is interesting giving the current state of America . Dom is a well rounded main charcter who you can love and shake your head at as he acts typicaly male in some untypical curcumstances. 3/4ths of the way done I cant wait for the quiet nights to read a chapter or two - and at my house things need be real good to out weigh sleep !

I brought this very thick book home Friday afternoon to read on my vacation this week. I finished it on Tuesday. I can't stand when I know how the book will end before I'm halfway through. This book was not like that. The details seemed to leak out just slow enough. I found the characters so real and interesting that I carried this book around everywhere I went. I can't wait to pass the book on to my Mom and then read it again...

Learning the vi Editor is a complete guide to text editing with vi. Topics new to the sixth edition include multiscreen editing and coverage of four viclones: vim, elvis, nvi, and vile and their enhancements to vi, such as multi-window editing, GUI interfaces, extended regular expressions, and enhancements for programmers. A new appendix describes vi's place in the Unix and Internet cultures. Quickly learn the basics of editing, cursor movement, and global search and replacement. Then take advantage of the more subtle power of vi. Extend your editing skills by learning to use ex, a powerful line editor, from within vi. For easy reference, the sixth edition also includes a command summary at the end of each appropriate chapter. Topics covered include:
  • Basic editing
  • Moving around in a hurry
  • Beyond the basics

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book about a great text editor.......2007-06-22

This book is a fine exposition of the vi editor with a perfect balance between density of information and friendliness of explanation.

The material is divided in two parts:
* Presentation of the vi proper.
* Presentation of the vi clones.

The value of the book resides in the first part (7 chapters). It explains vi so well that it is hard not to understand and like this well-designed editor.

************************************************************

Vi is an editor of many qualities: portability, price ($0!) and speed. When it comes to speed, file loading is quick, saving is quick, searching is quick, scrolling is quick - everything is quick with this guy!

Everything but... learning. The vi editor has had a bad reputation as being hard to learn and master. The modal behavior scares most people away and the wide range of commands may seem like hard to conquer. This could have been the situation *before* the amazing "Learning the vi Editor" by Lamb & Robbins existed - but now, when the book reaches the 6th edition, there's no excuse.

As "Learning the vi Editor" nicely explains, vi is a layer on top of the ex editor. Ex is a so-called "line-editor", used to edit files in a line-oriented manner. The two modes of vi are nothing else than an expression of this duality. In the so-called 'edit mode', ex is in control. In the so-called 'command mode', vi-proper is in control while redirecting the ':' commands to the underlying ex. Simple, isn't it?

The book exposes this philosophy behind vi with clarity, rigor and friendliness. Once you read this book you realize that, in fact, vi is a simple and perfectly logical editor. It has simple command sintax, simple command semantics and simple command composition rules.

************************************************************

All this information - and much more - can be found in the first part of "Learning the vi Editor". The second part is dedicated to various vi clones. Here the reader has the liberty to choose depending on which clone he/she feels most comfortable with.

Books which remove confusion and bring light to seemingly arcane areas are rare. "Learning the vi Editor" by Lamb & Robbins is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for properly learning the vi editor.......2007-02-17

If your operating system is down, you don't have access to the "fancier" editors available that actually have interfaces that make sense to normal people. At this moment, particularly if you are in a system administrator position, you must know vi in order to access and modify files. It is so easy to pick up vi the wrong way - usually by word of mouth from someone who has learned vi the wrong way too. This book is the best I've found that is dedicated to properly teaching you the features of the vi editor and how to use them. O'Reilly has experimented with several book formats over the last ten years. This book is what I like to call "classic O'Reilly". It is the same format that most of their other books on Unix tools are generally written in, and if you have their books on sed and awk or Unix Power Tools, you know what I'm talking about.

If you have learned the wrong way, or if you are a bonified beginner, start at the beginning of part one. Don't skip anything. Even if you think you already know something, at least read through the section to make sure you know the best way of doing it. By the end of the first seven chapters you should be a pretty skilled user of vi. The book makes frequent use of practice exercises, answers common questions, and gives advice on what to do when you encounter common problems. By the time you finish you'll even be writing ex scripts and modifying C/C++ code in the vi editor without accidentally inserting all kinds of control characters that will drive programmers crazy once "the real editor" is back on line.

Part two starts at chapter eight and concerns itself with all of the various extensions to vi that are available via the four most popular vi clones available when this book was published. You do get some enhancements such as multi-window editing and even GUI interfaces by using them, but the cost is an increase in the confusion factor that this book tries to clear up as much as possible. If you are not planning on using a vi clone, you may want to just file this section of the book away in case the subject ever comes up.

Part 3 consists of several useful appendices. Four of the appendices are still useful, but the fifth, on vi and the Internet, is a bit dated. I highly recommend this book if the vi editor is in your future, and if you have system administrator duties, believe me it is. You might also want to invest in the very handy "vi Editor Pocket Reference" by the same author. I have mixed feelings about that one. Everything is there in a concise format, but until you get used to it, information can be hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner to Advanced, Comprehensive Guide to Reference.......2005-09-29

This book is well written and laid out. Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi.

vi is by no means an easy or intuitive editor, but with a little practice, it can greatly improve your efficiency. The book does a great job of taking you through a logical progression of how to start using the product.

Also, the support for the derivatives of vi is a huge plus. The vim chapter is excellent and I learned several tips and trick that I now use on a daily basis.

As usual, O'Reilly hits another one out of the park.

5 out of 5 stars THE VI reference.......2005-06-30

This book is the reference for those wanting to understand the mysteries of Vi. Almost all Unix based systems typically have a variant of the Vi editor installed, even when the system is in a limited use state, therefore an understanding of this no-nonsense editor is crucial if you want to administer or recover your system. This makes the Vi the editor to know, and this book guides you through the basics to more advanced "tricks" used by the guru's. Even if you only plan on casually using Vi, you can't lose having this book in your library.

5 out of 5 stars This book covers vi, nvi, elvis, vim, and vile.......2005-04-17

vi (visual) is probably one of the most flexible editors (notice it is an editor not a word processor) that one can use. There are several ways to accomplish the same common tasks. There are so many ways in fact that most people learn just a subset of commands and string them together to do their editing instead of learning the more exotic commands.

The advantage of an editor besides speed and simplicity is that you will not inadvertently place visually hidden code in the program as you can easily do with a word processor.

People got so used to this editor on dos based environments. You can still use the command line editor after the colon at the foot of the screen. When you find and use the abilities of vi you will wonder what you did without it.

This book is a great starting place abd you may never need another.

The Topics include:

- Basic editing
- Moving around in a hurry
- Beyond the basics
- Greater power with ex
- Global search and replacement
- Customizing vi and ex
- Command shortcuts
- Introduction to vi clones' extensions
- The nvi, elvis, vim, and vile editors
- Summary of vi and ex commands
- Vi and the internet

The examples are quite clear and plentiful.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's suffered almost every abuse and familial travesty that exists: Her father is a violent, philandering liar; her mother has the mental and emotional consistency of Jell-O; and the men in her life are probably the gender's most loathsome creatures. But Dolores is no quitter; she battles her woes with a sense of self-indulgence and gluttony rivaled only by Henry VIII. Hers is a dysfunctional Wonder Years, where growing up in the golden era was anything but ideal. While most kids her age were dealing with the monumental importance of the latest Beatles single and how college turned an older sibling into a long-haired hippie, Dolores was grappling with such issues as divorce, rape, and mental illness. Whether you're disgusted by her antics or moved by her pathetic ploys, you'll be drawn into Dolores's warped, hilarious, Mallomar-munching world.

Book Description

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

I read this book as well as I know this much is true...and I believe that Wally Lamb is one of the great writers of our day...She's Come Undone, is a personal and touching story about a young woman who has lived a turbulent existence, and experienced much...What is incredible about this book is that it is written by a male writer...Wally Lamb, makes Dolores (the main character) become so real, so amazingly dear to the reader...this book is a page turner, I would recommend that new readers take it slow...I brailled this book for a blind student of mine, and was able to appreciate it even more the second time around...it is quite a book!

1 out of 5 stars HATED it.......2007-06-17

I couldn't stand this book, it was slow moving and depressing. I did not enjoy the book at all, I don't know why I kept reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A Sad Story of Finding Yourself........2007-06-14

Title: She's Come Undone

Author: Wally Lamb

Nobody wants to be "the fat girl". Dolores Price definitely didn't plan on being her. But after "the man upstairs" abuses her, all she can do to help numb the pain is eat. She eats to find comfort and forget her troubles, but all it does is make her life even more unbearable.

Wally Lamb has written many works that are truly honorable, such as I Know this Much Is True, a heartbreaking story about a schizophrenic identical twin, who struggles through live. As a featured writer of Oprah's book club, his work has touched the hearts of many people worldwide.

She's Come Undone is a gut-wrenching story about a shy high school girl who doesn't like to stand out in a crowd. But after she gains 180 pounds by her senior year, she has no choice but to. You follow the story of her life, from running away to college, to getting married, and then divorced, to a lesbian encounter that changes her life forever. You watch her go through confusion, heartbreak, and deep depression, all the while comparing your life to hers. As the story plays out, you begin to see the sweet, innocent girl behind those teary blue eyes, and the strength that helps glue the pieces of her life back together.

In my favorite part of the book, Dolores is on her knees, up to her neck in icy-cold water, eye-to-eye with a dead beached whale. With the media frenzy now dissolved, she just sits and stares, and as she looks at him, she sees herself, and finally decides to free herself from the judging eyes of the world.

You can tell the author has had rough patches in his life, and is aiming to let the world know that no matter how much you struggle through life, you will always find the strength to make it through if you just try. Try. Is that so hard to do?

This book is a work of pure perfection that everyone can relate to. Dolores's struggle with friendships, family, love, and finding yourself are all things the whole world can relate to, which is why everyone should read this book. Trust me, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Not forgotten about after all of these years.......2007-06-02

I read this book many years ago, and I still remember it. To me, the character in this book was like the female version of Holden Caufield in "Catcher in the Rye"...
This book is excellent. What I have a hard time believing, however, is that the author is a male! It is amazing to me that Wally Lamb has such incredible insight into the female mind. I can't tell you how many times I would look at his name on the front of the cover and ask myself it maybe it was a female author using a male pen name. I laughed, cried, and at times felt like this book was about me. Great job - and this book is well worth the read. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Book Was Designed for Easy Study.......2007-06-23

This 225-page book was formated with large over-sized fonts. If standard fonts were used and white spaces were reduced, the volume would be half the size. On the other hand, the publisher would be "hard pressed" to justify a price of $16.95 for a 113-page book.

The author used an outline approach in reviewing for the AP Government Test. This style had important advantages over the essay-like CLIFF NOTES approach. Listing important ideas and details with "margin bullets" eliminated the additional words and paragraphs required to construct a narrative and to tie ideas together. Also by bold printing terms and vocabulary, the reader's eyes were focused on the important ideas.

The outline style's biggest advantage was that the approach blended in with the way that people studied. It was easier to memorize an outline listing of specific ideas, details, and facts than rereading a narrative several times.

In the book, each topic section totaled five to ten pages. At the end of the section were five to ten multiple-choice review questions. Each was constructed in the same style and approach as the real AP test. Following the sectional test were one-sentence explanations on the answers.

The volume ended with website listing of six internet links for additional resources and a glossary of terms.

Unfortunately, the book had two flaws. On the sample Free-Response Essays, it only provided the rubrics for scoring. The author should have provided sample essay responses. Secondly, two identical copies of a sample diagnostic exam were provided. It would have been more helpful to have two different tests instead.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What You Need.......2007-01-03

This is a really good test prep book. Its practice test questions, both the multiple choice and the free response, are virtually identical to the real thing, and the review is not too detailed and long and not too general and basic; it's just right. Its layout is extremely accessible, and although there are some minor omissions in the review text, just use your textbook to supplement. The major flaw with this book, though, is that for its practice free-response question, it does not provide a rubric to score your responses. All it says is how many points the question was worth. If you go to the College Board website, though, you can find past free responses and the accompanying rubric scoring guide to practice with, and your teacher may have some, too. I had two review books for this test, this one and the Princeton Review one. Usually, I'm a big Princeton Review fan, but the corresponding PR book is dismal. The 5 Steps to a 5 one is the book to get.

5 out of 5 stars Best of all the AP US Government & Politics prep books.......2006-05-11

My son used three different prep books for the AP US Government & Politics exam and he said this was the best by far!!

5 out of 5 stars advice from a high school student.......2005-06-19

I am currently a junior in high school. Last year I took AP Government and Politics (U.S.) and since it was my very first AP year, I had no idea how to prepare for the test. To make matters worse, my Government teacher hardly did anything in class; he sat around drinking coffee and humming jazz tunes from his desk. His tests were hard and often had bad questions that did NOT reflect the actual questions on the AP test. For those who've had him, I think most would agree that what he does in class accurately fits his name--Mr. Nap.

I chose this book from the bookstore because it was short and concise--every chapter was laid out in a graphically neat way (no clumping like the barrons books, and not so spread out like the princeton books). It was my hope that I would be able to somehow study a bit on my own and salvage my AP grade when the May test came. Having got a 5 on the exam, I am now EXTREMELY thankful that there was a book like this. I can't say how much I owe my score to this book.

What I did, the month before the test was to read EACH chapter--and let me tell you, it's not hard, because the chapters are SHORT and CONCISE--and then to take the short 5-10 question quizzes at the end that gave me a good idea of how well i learned the material that chapter. I know that learning government and politics is BORING, but this is the BEST book out there that lays out the content in such an easy to learn manner. It doesn't focus on teaching you details--and you do'nt NEED details for the GOV exam because the material in AP gov and pol is conceptual, like certain powers and abilities of the executives, or a few major supreme court cases--what it DOES is often outline everything in good lists, that are REALLY helpful for last-min studying. I especially remember that page with all the amendments listed; in fact i used that page for memorization practice, by writing as many amendments from memory as possible until I finally was able to copy that list without looking. If you find this book hard to read, I think it might be a personal problem with concentration, rather than a problem with the book itself.

I will admit that throughout the year, I studied as much as possible from our textbook too, but considering the HUGE amounts of information in the text, it was impossible to memorize and learn everything from there. I would think that if you're buying this book, it's as a supplement anyway, but do'nt worry if you're not taking the class or like me, didn't have a very helpful teacher. The AP exam covers concepts--think BROAD--and this book does a great job of presenting to you what you need to know. Memorize most of what's in this book, and you'll easily get a 5.

5 out of 5 stars Well writen and informative.......2007-04-12

I read this book for my finance class and thought that it presented the material in a logical and meaningful way. There were interesting scenarios that it presented along with the information that helped illustrate the subjects. I recomend this book for anyone interested in marketing.

2 out of 5 stars Cluttered and a Deception.......2007-03-10

The content is average, but the text is very cluttered with extraneous sidebar information, symbols, different colored headings, and purple "online" blocks on many pages. My biggest complaint is that one chapter is completely missing. When you get to chapter 19, there are learning objectives, an outline, and then the reader is directed to go online to see the chapter. If you want to take the book with you to read, you must be near a computer for chapter 19, or print it. I paid a lot of money for a text book, which I assumed was complete. It is not. I was cheated out of one of the chapters that I paid for and then I had to print it out to read it away from my computer. Not ethical. I am very disappointed with the authors.

4 out of 5 stars Current and Informative.......2007-02-06

Overall, it is a good book. There are many great examples used with relevant companies highlighted. The information presented can be interpreted as biased and I often disagree with slant taken. The book layout and design is busy, and all of the supplemental features can be detracting at times.
