In the Various Effects and Uses are listed Immunomodulants, Antioxidants, Potassium and Vitamin C Supplements, and Skin Care, Cosmetic, Flavor and Fragrance Ingredients, and more. 5 out of 5 stars Very useful for practitioners.......2004-03-18

The Herbal Vade Mecum is a very good materia medica for the practising herbalist. Uses are given, dosages aren't, so you need to know your plants before you use this book.
Beginners might not do all that much with it, except for the teensy little fact that they'd get solid practical sensible cautions for the listed plants instead of the usual overly theoretical overcautious ones.
Were I a beginner, I'd buy it for that alone. No pictures, but then there are lots of picture books out there.

5 out of 5 stars A Library Necessity..........2004-03-10

This highly informative, attractively priced reference packs tons of information in a well-written, accurately designed collection of herbal information book. Reccommended for botanists, pharmocognicists and horticulturists (to mention a few), this book rivals industry 'greats' such as 'Tropica' and 'Exotica' (which run hundreds of dollars) AND has a much more digestible price. The design of the book makes it easy to use at your desktop or in the field. Bravo Mr. Skenderi! Someone finally got it right!

5 out of 5 stars Editor, Medical Herbalism journal.......2003-12-05

An excellent quick reference for the professional herbalist. It is in the same niche as other quick reference books such as Potter's Encylcopedia or Lust's Herb book, but far superior to either, because 1) it has many more herbs 2) it has up-to-date and accurate details on plant chemistry 3) the author has mined the wealth of herbal literature in German, Italian, and French 4) it contains reasoned judgements on safety considerations lacking in the other books in its class, and 5) it accurately describes the most important actions and most important uses, in a well thought-out section, instead of giving long lists of theoretical or minor actions. I'll be using this as a textbook for my intermediate-level students at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism. --- Paul Bergner, Editor, Medical Herbalism journal

Book Description

Kathy is waiting for her mother outside of school when a strange car approaches. The smiling man inside offers to drive Kathy home, suggesting that her mother may be hurt or sick. Just before Kathy is ready to climb in, her mother arrives and the man speeds off. Kathy is confused and hurt that the nice man would leave so quickly.

Later that night, Kathy's parents use examples from nature of pretty but lethal plants and fish to show her that animals and people that look or seem nice may be very dangerous. Not Everyone is Nice teaches children what to do if a stranger approaches and reminds them that looking or acting nice doesn't mean a person is safe.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness.......2007-06-08

My main problem with this book is that it is based on the incorrect assumption that strangers are primarily responsible for sexual abuse and abduction of children. Most offenders are people a child knows, most often family members. When an individual is looking for children to abuse, they often become friends with the family and child before beginning to abuse. Including information about strangers is useful, but focusing on that possibility leaves a child vulnerable to sexual preditors that s/he knows.

1 out of 5 stars too long; not appropriate for any age.......2007-06-06

I just received this and I'm confused by the positive reviews. I think the book was a good idea, but the authors needed a merciless editor. The book is WAY too long: 20 pages with 80 words on some pages, practically a term paper, a painful one. The book is recommended for ages 4-8, but the drawings and language are more suited for 3-5 year olds; in fact I found the language down right condescending (babyish). There's a weird lack of cohesion about the whole book, like the authors hadn't quite figured out what they wanted to say or who they wanted to say it to. This book isn't appropriate for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-05-12

Excellent book for parents teaching children about the dangers of talking to strangers!!!

4 out of 5 stars good opener.......2006-10-10

I agree with another reviewer that the metaphore of using dangerous animals that look attractive is a bit of a stretch for the young ones, I also think that when it comes to a topic this important it is best to be clear and simple. But I do think this book is a good opener to a potentially scary topic and this book does a good job at presenting a new idea without it being too scary. I would start with this book but I wouldn't stop here.

5 out of 5 stars Stranger offers candy.......2006-08-20

This was a great book for a child to understand. My child is 5 and she understood what was happening and it opened up conversation about stargers that look nice but are really bad. The strager offers the girl waiting at school candy after he tells her that her mom isn't going to pick her up and he could take her home instead. It was great to teach with because that situation is very likely to happen. I recommond this book for a child who is going to start school or waits anywhere alone.

Book Description

One minute Lisa Woodrow is a big city prosecutor, and the next she's back home, deep in the fumes of North Carolina racing culture and trying to keep a low profile.

She has no choice. A criminal she helped convict is on the prowl for her, and Wade McClellan, ex-fiancé and best-NASCAR-crew-chief-in-the-business, insists his security is tight and she'll be safer with him.

There's no way Lisa will ever go back to being a "sideline cheerleader," but this caring, committed Wade hardly seems to be the same man she left behind. Suddenly, staying beneath the radar in North Carolina doesn't seem to be such a bad idea.…

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2007-05-12

As a NASCAR fan, I was fascinated with having an almost eyewitness account of the many intricacies and complexities of this sport, which were so brilliantly woven into this story. Pit strategies, spotter's comments, the weekend routine, and so much more came alive right off the pages!!! It definitely provides a deeper appreciation and understanding beyond what is seen on TV or while attending a race at the track! I read this book in one sitting on a Sunday morning, and my favorite driver went on to win the race that afternoon, so it brought good luck too! lol

Usually the driver is the center of attention, but not so in this story, which focused on the crew chief and gave great insight into how very extensive his role is each week. Also showcased was the role of the families of the race-team. The romance was secondary to the action and the intrigue of protecting the owner's daughter from a dangerous stalker.

4 out of 5 stars fun second chance at love thriller.......2007-02-14

When dangerous Jesse Norris escapes, Chicago based Assistant District Attorney Lisa Woodrow decides to take some R&R amidst the safety of her family in Charlotte because she knows this nasty person will be coming for those who put him away. She is at the top of his list. Her ailing parents are elated to see her, but she hides why she came home from them out of concern for their well-being though Lisa suspects her mother knows.

However, her former fiancé, Team Woodrow NASCAR crew chief Wade McClellan overhears the threat to his beloved's life. He altruistically blackmails her as a caution into staying with him by threatening to tell her parents if she refuses although he also believes her parents would be safer if she remained with him. Wade never stopped loving Lisa even though he assumes it is over between them, but he must insure she is safe and can best do it with the security of the racing circuit.

The theme of an avenging convicted criminal going after the prosecutor has been used frequently, however Gina Wilkins freshens it with the milieu of the NASCAR racing circuit. The story line is fast-paced whether the subplot is a second chance at love or the criminal threat. Readers will enjoy this fine race between love and a murdering escapee intent on killing the ADA and anyone else blocking his victory lap.

Book Description

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach argues that the roots of fear lie deep within the recesses of the soul and are magnified by a culture of purposelessness and meaninglessness. In the face of terrorism, individuals live with the constant dread that they dont matter. Boteach concludes that fear is crippling society with unprecedented force. He tackles this overwhelming emotion and answers the following questions: How does fear suck vitality from our lives? How can we be so powerful a society yet so succeptible to fear? How can we liberate ourselves from its clutches? Face Your Fear is a book that inspires us to transcendence by connecting to what is rock-solid and eternal.

It's a lifesaver. Mr. Shmuley Boteach has been given the gift of wisdom for him to impart these truthful observations about fear, for all of us. Fear is a basic emotional ingredient in our lives, and a useless one at that. He teaches us how to combat it. And combat it for good.
God led me to buy this book, just when I Needed it Most. It's honest and very readable. Mr. Shmuley, thank you!

Book Description

A world famous thinker, author, lecturer, and activist, whose diverse, acclaimed and immensely popular body of work covers such subjects as religion, relationships, and bravery, Boteach now turns his attention to America's present state of mind and comes to the conclusion that fear is crippling society with unprecedented force. The only way to escape this climate is to learn what fear is and how to overcome it.He tackles fear headlong and answers the following questions: What is fear? What is it doing to us? Why is it affecting us now more than ever before? How can we be so powerful a society yet so succeptible to fear? How can we conquer it? Why do we need to conquer it?Face Your Fear is a book so relevant that it has a chance to be absorbed by society's consciousness and to change the way we think.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on fear.......2006-04-28

I bought this book after seeing Rabbi Shmuley on his television show, which I believe airs on The Learning Channel (TLC). He artfully helps mend families who are near the breaking point. His wisdom and talent are beyond the beyonds if you ask me.

The ideas in the book are enlightening/thought provoking. He mentions the idea that our greatest fear is the fear of being insignificant, which is something I had never thought about and feel is likely true.

I enjoy the way the author uses wonderfully profound and inspirational quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Major concepts within each chapter are highlighted in bold.

My only objection to this book is the frequent mention of political ideas/concepts. I found myself laughing a few times that the Rabbi was indeed without fear to include so many references to world politics/civics, etc. that it might be a distraction for some readers. Due to this little "flaw," my ideal rating for the book would be a "4.5"

However, do not let that detract you from buying this book. It seems to be written with a lot of wisdom, experience and love.

1 out of 5 stars Political campaigning disguised as self-help.......2005-11-12

I own three of Shmuley Boteach's books. Aside from this one, which I will soon be selling, I also have 'Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments' and 'Why Can't I Fall In Love?'. Those two books are excellent and I frequently recommend them to people. This book, however, is a thinly-veiled argument strongly in favour of the current Republican "War on Terror" and in proliferating similar activities around the world, all in the guise of defeating your own personal fears. It's a very politically-focused book and every second sentence seems to mention either Osama, a pro-Bush stance, the September 11 attacks, or some kind of heavy-handed generalisations about political conflicts.

Here's one example, taken at random:

"Roosevelt knew that . . . Hitler and the Nazis were the darkness. They were evil and the allies were good. Any conciliation would represent an unacceptable deal with the devil."

Now, before you think that I'm defending Nazis, let me tell you unequivocally that I'm not. However, this "good vs evil" way of thinking is not only painfully simplistic in a political context, but throughout the book it seems it's only there to elicit an emotional rise from the readers in accordance with current politically-correct views--it's emotional manipulation, people!

He also drags the USA's prior treatment of blacks out and mixes it in with how Jews are always fearful because they've "endured two-thousand years of slaughter", and so on. The problem isn't with the issues being spoken of, it's with the fact that they are used in a deliberate attempt to manipulate.

I will sell my copy of this book rather than finish reading it. The politics gets in the way of any good advice that might be found here. In fact, I suspect that the book is a vehicle for promoting his political views and has nothing truly to do with helping people overcome their own personal issues with their fears.

5 out of 5 stars This is REAL!.......2005-02-16

The chapter that made the biggest impact on me in "Face Your Fear" as I read it was "What Stuff Are We Made Of." It especially gave me an uncanny feeling when Rabbi Boteach talked about how women sometimes fall into the trap of cheap and unsatisfying relationships (which usually culminate painfully for them) because they find themselves in dire need for male attention - even from men who would rather sleep with them than create a caring relationship.
The night before I read this chapter I spoke to a friend in an Ivy League college in Boston who is trying his best to "get it on" with a girl (in his words - "any girl"). He told me that he hit rock bottom dating someone who didn't want to go "to the next step" that quickly fearing that she would get hurt again after he would use her up, to put it bluntly. I felt that the chapter perfectly mirrored this girl's situation. Rabbi Boteach explains how these women lacked a loving father in their lives and therefore wanted to compensate that with a base and uncaring boyfriend. While the fact that this girl having had her father walk out on her when she was only seven years old and she never saw him again, tugged an inner emotional chord in me that still shakes.
But, in terms of broader substance, I have to thank Rabbi Boteach for teaching me that fear is something not to be proud of, but be cautious about. In fact, be deliberately aggressive to eradicate it completely. Alarmingly, it encompasses practically everything I do, from taking exams in school to interacting with people, and I never even knew that these edgy feelings are called fears. They constantly try to undermine my hard-pressed efforts and abilities to reach my potential. Instead of facing them with genuine and unswerving resolve, I tend to cop out.
The first part of the book called "The Case Against Fear" categorically pinned down for me the different kinds of fears that are found not just in an individual ("me") but in a collective group or people ("us") dealing with a wide-range of existential forces that continually bombards us with fear symptoms, such as politics and corporate business. Rabbi Boteach even tackles the issue of our fear of death.
Undoubtedly the strongest dose of inspiration that I got from Rabbi Boteach is from what he calls "the mother of all fears", which is, "the fear of insignificance." He says that this huge worry that's invariably locked inside our minds governs our scariest and most unshakable fears.
In the second part of the book "To Conquer Fear" he tells us how to "overcome our fear" and especially the fear of us being utterly and despondently insignificance. He also debunks the various myths about the alleged positive side of fear. He says that basically we can't derive any good from fear because it's inherently bad as an element that's antithetical to love. Therefore we must strive to destroy our fears by imbibing the waters of love.
But what makes this work real is the candid and the down-to-earth prose. "The instructions for overcoming fear that you will find in this book do not consist of abstract concepts, appropriate only for meditation and inappropriate in the real world. This book is a spiritual book that seeks to identify the underlying causes of fear" (pg. 8). Meaning that its not a vacuum cleaner that one can just let it rip while sitting back and having all the fear miraculously sucked out from out of him or her. There has to be an active participation and will to make this transition work. But when the person finds his or her love and confidence, it's as strong as a fortress on top of a precipitating cliff defending the person against the many
fears.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for children....and adults too!.......1999-11-16

This is an excellent...easy to understand...easy to follow devotional for children...and for adults too. The author presents facts in a fun and informative fashion. You can tell she's a mom who is a great communicator. I think anyone who's looking for a way to get their children into the bible will love Jackie Perseghetti's books!

5 out of 5 stars This devotional is extremely practical, yet exciting!.......1999-08-16

As a teacher of 4th & 5th grade at church, I was able to take this book and do a lot of creative classes with my kids. They absolutely loved it! I had parents telling me the only reason they came to church that night, despite exhaustion from working all day, was because their kids were going to be terribly upset if they didn't make it to class. We had "dress up" for the wedding feast at Caanan and we were farmers for the story of the demons sent into the pigs. The book lends itself to holding the interest of that age group. The conciseness of the stories holds your attention well. The comments at the end are applicable for everyday use. It addresses the heart of each story and offers suggestions to live out what you have now learned. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent layout, very well organized & challenging content.......1999-04-06

Caution: Dangerous Devotions is a unique, one-of- a-kind Chrisitian devotional with an extremely organized format, which beautifully compliments the subject matter. The authors approach to the medley of Biblical themes is eye catching, enter- taining and mind and heart stimulating. From beginning to end, there is evident a "main theme" which captivates the reader to respond to God's free gift of salvation. Often, throughout the lessons, there is the referral (to the back of the

book) to read again what it means to become a Christian. The authors clear and concise way of bringing to life Biblical characters and their situations and relating them to todays people and experiences is mastered superbly. There is no doubt that God was "at work" then and still at work today--His Spirit convicting the heart of a sinful race. This book offers a great deal in the way of teaching the reader (no matter the age!) the condition of mankind, as clearly stated in the Scriptures, and of a mighty God Who is loving and powerful enough to forgive, and Who's Son, Jesus Christ, laid down His life to buy back the world through His death on the cross. I highly recommend this book for children, teen- agers and adults. The author has presented beautifully many New Testament accounts of people, places and events which are accurate to "that" time. Obviously, much research was done to achieve the goal of educating the reader. I am impressed with the author's tender approach in conveying the love of Jesus Christ, who is God! This book is easy to read. In each lesson, there is put forth a challenge to some specific purpose relating to that topic. The lessons end with a thought-provoking question or idea which motivates the reader to make some sort of decision. The side theme of the "hiker" climbing the rope can be seen while quickly flipping the pages from front to back--a cleaver way of showing the reader, (yes, even us older ones!) that our journey in life can be tough and yet it is wonderful when we can rely on Jesus and His promises to sustain us through the pitfalls as well as through those mountain-top experiences. Five stars and A+!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST!!.......1999-01-08

This book is awesome! I'm a teenager and this book has helped me to understand and get more excited about reading my Bible. It's one of the better devotionals on the market because it doesn't have a nerdy story with a Scripture verse on the end. Instead, the devotions are straight from Scripture with great life applications and questions that make me really think. The writer also makes me feel like I'm right there in the middle of all the action. This devotional is a MUST READ for everyone -- definitely a great book for ANY age!!

3 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the big law firm experience.......2004-09-11

I'm investigating careers in the legal field, and I got this from a friend of mine. The book is honestly written and straightforward. However, it must be approached for what it is: a first-job perspective from a 26-27 year old student, fresh out of a grueling 7 or 8 years of law school and academia in general, with no real-world job experience and some highly idealistic preconceptions of how things should work. He gets a job in a top-flight high paying law firm in NYC (apparently, a Hollywoodesque big-time scenario for a lot of young lawyers) and documents his work experiences, interaction with fellow workers, and life in general in an engaging journal-entry style. This is definitely a one-sitting read.

I think it's a valuable read for anyone interested in a law career, especially if interested in working for a firm. It documents one scenario from a junior associate's perspective who worked for one large firm in NYC. From Keates' standpoint, I have come to understand that while the salary and perks might be initially very appealing, the job experience can be horrifying.

I completely disagree with the reviewer who thinks this is a "be-all, end-all" decision-making reference for law school (if reading this book scares you away from practicing law in entirety, maybe you shouldn't be approaching law school in the first place). Keates helped me to think about one possible work scenario out of hundreds that a law degree might make possible, and I'm grateful for the knowledge. If you're a 3rd year law student and your goal is to become a JA and make $90,000 your first year at a big law firm, maybe you should read this.

Also recommended is Susan Estrich's How To Get Into Law School (ISBN 1594480354), which discusses not only the approaches to get into law school but career paths and law practice in general.

3 out of 5 stars OK - but if you WANT to be a lawyer, see Keith Evans book.......2004-07-10

An excellent book for lawyers who WANT to be lawyers and effective advocates is "Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers," by Keith Evans. Great book for new associates and 3Ls.

Mr. Evans practiced as a trial lawyer in California for many years after a decade as a barrister in England. He also taught as an adjunct law professor and gave many presentations to American Inns of Court.

Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers is published by TheCapitol.Net, and more information about Evans' book is available on Amazon: search Amazon for ISBN 1587330059

If you want to be an excellent attorney and an effective advocate, you should buy Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers. If you're miserable and want company, buy "Proceed With Caution."

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to make an informed decision about the law.......2002-04-02

This book does a great job of informing people in high school, college, and anyone else thinking about going to law school what practicing law in a prestigious law firm is actually like. The book is an easy read because each chapter begins with an entry from the author's journal, and then focuses on a particular aspect of a large-firm legal practice. The journal entries provide startlingly personal and realistic insights into a top lawyer's lifestyle, while the chapters describe what lawyers really do on a daily basis. The book effectively offers the information that people need in order to make an informed decision about whether to go to law school.

5 out of 5 stars WILL CONVINCE YOU NOT TO GO TO LAW SCHOOL!.......2002-03-09

I would never even consider going to law school after reading this book. The excerpts from the author's diary enable readers to see through the veneer of prestige associated with large-firm law practices and understand what life is really like at a top law firm. For years, I've been hearing that lawyers are often highly dissatisfied with their jobs and lives, despite the high salaries and professional prestige. Until I read this book, though, no one could effectively articulate the specific reasons WHY lawyers tend to be so unhappy (other than the long hours they often work). This book finally fills that void by slowly building the case, chapter by chapter, against life in a large law firm. Through his diary entries, Keates does a fantastic job of describing not only why he is professionally and personally dissatisfied, but also HOW his dissatisfaction affects him over time.

3 out of 5 stars enough complaining -- find a new job.......2001-06-24

The appendix in the back of this book, titled "Starting Salaries for New Associates at the 250 Largest Law Firms in America" explains it all -- it's difficult for the top-performing law students, often saddled with thousands of dollars of student loan debt, to pass up the signing bonuses, six-figure salaries, and tremendous prestige of big-city large-firm practice, especially when the salaries are often triple or quadruple what one could earn in the public service or government law. Keates is somewhat aware of the drawbacks of big firm practice, yet like many given the opportunity, he goes for the "brass ring" anyway. It doesn't take long for Keates to discover that he hates his job -- and this diary details the path by which his disillusionment about the glamour of the law is dispelled. He quickly discovers that big firm practice can be a 24/7 commitment, being on the hook to fickle partners, fickle clients, and fickle judges, all of which can be extremely stressful. Keates discusses the incidence of depression in lawyers, how one in ten lawyers thinks of suicide at least monthly. The solution to Keates' situation is apparent early on -- move on, find a different job in the law, change fields completely, but that would take the courage to give up the security of the huge paycheck, the Porsche 944, the prestige.

Book Description

The "nice man" needs help finding his lost puppy. An excellent non-scary teaching tool for parents to read to children and discuss the family who unknowingly set the stage for an attempted kidnaping of their daughter in the park. When the "nice man" is arrested, the Police Chief cautions and teaches Grant and Karen about safety rules and challenges them to teach other kids. Grant and Karen begin with their multi-cultural, multi-racial neighborhood friends and they form a group and call themselves THE CAUTION CREW™. They proceed to teach other children important personal safety rules. Cautioncrew.com, a site designed for children, reinforces these safety rules and lists state policies for missing children.

Children 3-11 will experience a story about children like themselves in 36 pages of beautiful color. The Summary of Personal Safety Tips, plus fill in the blank, will help children learn the importance of acquiring and practicing personal safety rules. 1. Never talk to strangers. 2 Know your telephone number. 3. Know your street address. 4. Be aware of people near you when your parents are not with you. 5. No grownup should ever ask you for help. They should ask another grownup. 6. You do not have to touch a car or go near the car to talk to someone in that car. A person sitting in a car can grab you if you get too close. So, talk from a distance. 7. If a stranger grabs you and no one is around to help, fall to the ground and let your body be totally limp like a rag. Practice this. 8. If a stranger touches you, yell "help" or "This is not my dad" or "This is not my mom." Practice this also.

A web site devoted to the Caution Crew contains the children from the book teaching specific safety tips to children. : Cautioncrew.com is an upbeat and non-threatening learning site for children

This story is dull, and it goes on for too long without anything interesting happening. My students were quickly bored with it; I feel I wasted my money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Children of all ages will benefit.......2000-02-06

Having appreciated the teaching nature of "A Stranger in the Park", my wife and I purchased the book for friends and family with children a variety of ages. All of the feedback we've received has been very positive. The book has provided a forum for their families to discuss safety and the relevant rules. We highly recommend this book to any parent interested in engaging their children in a discussion about safety.

5 out of 5 stars Very educational and creative.......1999-11-19

I wasn't looking for a book about stranger danger, but I am glad I found this. There is a great lesson to be learned here. The story is well told and well drawn. I was able to read this to my girls ages 4 and 9 and they both understood the message and lesson. I was particularly attracted to the fact that this story can be read to kids without creating fear or tension about regular activities around strangers. The author was right about the book not scaring parents or children. I think it is a worthy book and hope the next one is as good. T.H. Tulsa, OK.

5 out of 5 stars As a crime prevention specialist, I highly recommend it........1999-10-07

This book is an excellent tool for educating children about personal safety. Younger children can easily follow along as the story is read to them, and the crime prevention message is very solid. The material is presented in a way that empowers the child, as opposed to frightening them, and it has a universal quality that tends to make it interesting and appealing to children from a variety of cultures. As a certified Crime Prevention Specialist and a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, I am very selective in the resources I recommend. However, I was so impressed with this book that I recommend it without reservation to parents, teachers, or crime prevention personnel working with young children.

5 out of 5 stars The children loved it!.......1999-09-30

I have two young children and they both loved the pictures. They also understood the story. I thought that was the most impressive aspect of the book.
