Excellent Service.......2007-05-24
Received book promptly at a very reasonable price. Would definitely order from this supplier again.
I think this book should be a part of your home library.......2007-04-11
For 3rd Year medical students, but may serve a more valuable role for individuals with sickness. This is an excellent medical reference book to have available in your home library. The medical jargon is heavy but the degree of comprehensiveness important. The authors approach medicine by approach the problem rationally explains symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Since everything in the body is chemistry except to see a lot of chemical equations and interactions. However, this does not diminish from relevance of the information in the book. The technical jargon can be easily translated into layman understanding and analogies. This is not a technical journal; it is a guideline. For example IBS: no known cure (adjust lifestyle), reoccurring, may be trigger by psychological events with deniability probable, three symptoms (pain, constipation, and diarrhea), and two prescription drugs that help with the symptoms. The book describes (if applicable) IBS regional areas of pain and discomfort. I found the technical information helpful in identifying the source of the problem.
I hope the authors will build a medical expert system for patients using the principles and knowledge from this book and put it online. Patients need to understand the problem from the view of a doctor in a detail manner and feel comfortable the thoroughly understand the treatment information. Doctors don't have time to explain their reasoning, but this book can feel in the missing information, Harrison is the missing resource. I believe, People are getting smarter and so the exclusive nature of the medical information is dissolving and becoming more accessible. Additionally, Harrison provides enough of a guideline for further medical research on the problem.
The best. .......2007-01-04
All you need to know and much more. Excellent edition and contents.
The worst shipping I ever got.
NO description necessary........2006-09-25
I read this as a student in my 3rd and 4th year. This book will help you be a better physician, no matter what specialty. If you buy one book your entire career, this is it.
Also great for specialties outside of internal medicine.......2006-07-29
So, everyone knows that Harrison's is the Bible for internists and residents of internal medicine. As a 3rd year medical student, I used the book to research whenever I had to give a presentation or wanted to know more about my patients.
As a pgy-1 in psychiatry now, I find this book more useful than ever, but in a different sense. Being on psych rotations now, I often find that new onset psychosis might be the result of a general medical condition. Although the interface between psychiatry and medicine has improved over the years, my colleagues in medicine of see in black and white regarding this kind of presentation (ie this person is crazy; psych should be treating him).
Consequently, I want to remain not only diplomatic when talking with ER and Medicine residents and attendings, but also want to seem knowledgeable and tailor my thought process more to their speciality. This is where Harrison's is helping me. I read up on the conditions, labs, and treatments of my differential so that when I call, I sound knowledgeable and have a specific idea of how they can help me out. Stating that you're reading from Harrison's lets others know that you're thinking about the patient and not just wanting to dump on another service.
Other reviews have discussed how this version is great with color and treatment boxes; I completely agree. It's nice to have such a large text that you can actually read.
I recommend this book for any of the following:
1. 3rd year students on an internal medicine rotation
2. Obviously internal medicine residents and internists
3. Everyone else in medicine for the reasons listed above. No matter what our specialties, we're all medical doctors and should have an excellent medical reference. Harrison's has been and will always be the gold standard!

Book Description
Authored by the world's leading authorities, this is an authoritative, full-color instructional manual for mastering nerve block techniques. Beautifully illustrated with 350 color illustrations, including 175 clinical photographs of actual patients.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE book to get for nerve blocks........2007-05-26
I searched far and wide for the ideal regional book. I compared illustrations, methods, descriptions, price...everything. This exceeded my expectations. The book starts with a section entitled "training in PNB", which could be useful for an academic department trying to implement a structured regional anesthesia program or perhaps a private group looking to improve the group's delivery of regional anesthesia. Next is the excellent chapter on "essential regional anesthesia anatomy". Ch. 3 is a very practical guide as to what equipment the department will need (including needles, syringes, drugs, airway, etc). There are chapters on pharmacology, complications, and general tips for success. The meat of the book starts on p.90 (ch.8). This is where the book truly shines. Each chapter describes a block and follows the same format. It opens with "Block at a Glance", a short bulleted list that succinctly describes indications, landmarks, needle, amount of local and level of difficulty. Then it delves into the anatomy, distribution of the block, positioning, equipment, landmarks, and detailed step by step intstructions. There are numerous illustrations and glossy photos, countless practical tips on what to do if you fail to get twitches on the first pass, choice of local, everything. Keep in mind, this is not meant to be a comprehensive catalogue of every possible way to block so-and-so nerve. It is a pratical instruction manual meant to teach you a few of the most useful blocks. The techniques may not coincide with the way you were taught but these are the tried and true techniques as perfected by the docs at NYSORA. In summary, even if you haven't done a PNB since residency, this book will allow you to start performing them again with confidence. It's your one-stop source.
One of the best........2007-01-12
This is one of the best texts you will find regarding perpheral nerve blocks. The graphics are very good with actual pictures clearly showing relevant landmarks. The text also covers pharmacology, clinical pearls, how to avoid pitfalls as well as more detailed and specific information. Highly recommended.

Excellent boook.......2005-07-22
This text is based on the work put into the www.nysora.com website over the past several years.
The book covers a pretty wide collection of regional blocks, but omits dealing with spinals and epidurals.
Each block is explained covering the essential anatomy, surface anatomy, detailed technique and sevceral practical tips and hints for when things do not go quite according to plan.
I recommend the text very highly

Book Description
This book covers concepts, structure, and mechanisms of operating systems. Stallings presents the nature and characteristics of modern-day operating systems clearly and completely.
Includes major programming projects. Offers step-by-step web support with CD/Rom Resources.
A basic reference for those interested in learning more about operating systems; also suitable for self-study.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Reference Book.......2007-06-02
This book serves as a good reference, as it contains just about every topic related to operating systems. Like an encyclopedia, however, this is not a book that you want to read cover to cover. While all the material is there, it is not necessarily in any logical order and the material is presented in an extremely dry but straight-forward manner. I found other operating system texts, such as Tanenbaum, to be better for tutorial-style learning. But as a reference text, this book can't be beat.
cyber kid.......2006-09-13
My Operating Systems course used this book and we were assigned chapters that did not coincide. Lack of editing, and no source code for process and child process creation, nor thread or how a thread can spawn another thread. This book is incredibly disappointing. This book does not read well at all.
I would recommend Operating System Concepts by Abraham Silberschatz (updated for Windows XP)good for a college course.
Good, solid, but not Stallings' best book........2006-06-20
I've just finished using this book for a course and I wanted to write a review while the information was still fresh in my mind. However because mine looks to be the only positive review I will probably fall into the trap of rebutting some of the other reviews.
First of all, I usually rate Stallings' books at 5 stars - they've taught me a lot. While this one isn't his best, it's nothing to sneeze at, and better than most texts on similar subjects. The writing is drier than his other texts, but it's fairly concise and very clear, difficult to achieve with such a technical subjct matter!
One reviewer complained that it was difficult to read through in one go - well what do you expect from a book about low-level operating system architecture, it's not Agatha Christie! I found it easy to follow, learn and summarise the concepts, the questions and problems were mostly relevant (and there were a lot, so choosing a subset wasn't hard) and mostly it was pretty interesting (if you happen to like this sort of stuff).
It's one fault is it fails to cover specific coding techniques and examples on an implementation level. However since this would have to be platform- or environment-specific, that's probably on purpose. I would guess most courses would have seperate course material covering implementation, depending on what environment they were interested in or was available.
All in all it's a good book and it'll help you learn stuff. That's the point right?
Reality check time..........2006-05-29
I always end up writing these reviews with some trepidation... Am I out to convince people to buy stuff or not to buy stuff?
What is the value of reading this if it doesn't express clearly buy or not buy? Is this product worth X dollars or not?
The answer, I think, is always up to the buyer.
All I can do is brief you on my experience with the product, like this book. Most of the reviewers here have given it thumbs down and I understand some of their points.
I had to use this book because of my schools decision...
It is not a waste as others might have you believe.
First of all, it was excellent for exam preparation. The review questions and the vocabulary check at the end of each chapter made it a quick search and find for last minute cramming.
Further, it is written with the student in mind and that translates into pages full of very valuable info packets, easy to retrieve and reuse.
I also found this book helpful for a paper on the EROS OS and that wasn't quite as cut and dried as it sounds since the author is Windows, UNIX, and LINUX centric.
Can it be improved ? No doubt.
Is it too expensive ? Yes, but then all text books are.
Bottom line: It can be an asset to your library, depending on your particular needs. It is a good beginning text for understanding Operating Systems.
I cannot believe this man is a graduate of M.I.T........2005-12-13
Its is by far the worst written textbook I have ever used. While the book touches on almost every type of OS design, it does so hap-hazardly, and without explaining why those designs were chosen. In short, Dr. Stallings writing style could use some improvement. The book is filled with wordy, redundant sentences, and pointless filler in almost every paragraph. What's worse, the book misuses list and figures - many lists have over 10 bullets (generally with a few paragraphs of explanation under them), and most of the figures are over annotated, and look too similar. Why bother to make list and figures if they must be explain by paragraph after paragraph of poorly worded pros?
...And it gets worse! Thought-out the whole book, Dr. Stallings fails to provide even one snippet of compliable code. The book rarely mentions how an OS designer would go about implementing his or her ideas, even though OS design is decidedly low-level - details are probably just as important as overall design for OSes.
Finally, the homework has nothing to do with what is covered in the book, and is horribly worded to boot. In one question, Stallings ask readers to ". describe exactly, in general..." How do I describe something exactly while keeping it general? This isn't the only question that leaves readers scratching their heads, in fact, I would say that no question is to the point, and manages to express what it is really asking.

Excellent!.......2007-03-16
Harrison's is the most complete book of clinical medicine in one nice package. Well worth the investment!
If your a Third year Medical student this book is a must........2006-09-12
I just finished my third year of medical school, and I found this book to be a must own. the topics quite interesting and comprehensible, and will help with most areas you need to reference.
the best there is.......2005-12-31
I can scarcely believe that people dare to criticize this tome. I don't actually have Harrison--I have Tinsley & Harrison, as it was called in decades past. (People do grow old and die.) The notion that a layperson "can understand Hippocrates' Aphorisms in the original Greek" better is nonsense: frankly, it depends upon the lay reader's familiarity with terminology, yea, his or her command of Greek and Latin roots. That's what dictionaries are for, and that's also presumably what your English classes (remember them?) instilled in you--at least partially--at least hopefully. By way of superfluous comparisons to other opera campi, Merck just doesn't provide the depth of coverage: I regard it as a glorified Taber's.
For the lay person---NOT!!!.......2004-04-18
There is a reason why med students learn anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, and biochemistry before picking up Harrison's, so I snicker when non-MD's think they can read and understand ( with the help of Taber's medical dictionary, which by the way is used by nurses, physicians in training use Dorland's) a medical textbook, especially one like Harrison's.( What is especially humorous is that one reviewer recalled that the textbook was titled "Tinsley & Harrison "(sic).... funny because Harrison's first name was Tinsley, as in Tinsley Harrison, MD).This is like a layperson reading a computer manual then taking apart his PC and trying to put it back together. To reiterate a layperson has a better chance of understanding Hippocrates' aphorisms in the original Greek than Harrison's. Remember a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. To the reviewer that has Tinsley Harrison's earlier edition textbook, the medical information there is as useful as a screen door in a submarine. If it's writing style, literature and actual history of medicine that you are after, may I suggest "The Practice and Principles of Medicine" by Sir William Osler.
Wonderful home reference!.......2004-02-09
Great reference, even for non-MD's. The book's chapters are a great read for anyone interested in health matters, and also for those who desire a really comprehensive medical tome.
The thing is pricey, but well-worth the cost.

This book saved my @ss!.......2006-01-07
If you are reading this, you are probably preparing for an ABIM internal medicine exam in addition to all your other duties. There is never enough time, is there? Well, I was preparing for the ABIM recertification exam, and it had been 10 years since I'd finished residency. I had slogged through the Mayo review book over the course of five months, dutifully going over every page. Tres painful. There were three weeks left before the exam, and I figured I'd give this book a try. I quickly discovered how ignorant I was, despite doing the Mayo book. Charlie Wiener taught me a lot of critical care medicine way back when, and this text was a lot like sitting down with Charlie. If you are a former member of the Osler Medical House Staff (or did residency training at some other urban hospital), the case scenarios will give you flashbacks. The questions are well-written, and the answers give you really good feedback. The questions are highly relevant, reflecting what the ABIM wants you to know. There are a handful of errors here and there, where the letter of the answer in the key has a different letter than the same correct answer in the question... perhaps the editors changed the order of some of the answers or some of the distractor answers between editions. Mildly annoying, but not fatal.
I got my pass notice from the ABIM today. I'm convinced that Charlie's book made a crucial difference. Yeah, the book lists for $55, but it's a bargain compared to the $550 it costs to take the recert examination over. :-)
Good luck!
Well thought out questions............2005-09-03
The first question I had when I was to purchase this book was whether this book was good for the USMLE Step 2 and 3.
The answer, in my case atleast, is an emphatic 'yes'. From my experience of Step 1, I have come to the conclusion that there is no quick solution to the USMLE exams - books like First Aid and some other 100 pg 'high yeild' review books can help you pass and score above average but getting great scores requires more than just that. The questions on the exam [step 1] were very varied and I don't expect the questions on step 2 to stick to what Kaplan and other review books call 'high yeild'. Being a little over-prepared is definitely worth the effort. And that's where this book is an absolute ace!
About this book - about 1000 Qs - well researched - fantastically up-to-date - it "is" the 2005 edition!. They are well arranged - meaning if you are in a chapter on rheumatology, the questions on Rheumatoid arthritis are clustered together. While solving them and while reading the solutions, one gets a wholesome idea about that disease. This also means that you don't have to read another 'review' book to get to know the subject matter. The explanations are detailed enough to make using a short review book superfluous. That the answers are referenced to the corresponding pages of the Harrison's Textbook is an added benefit.
About the questions, more impressive than the difficulty level is their construction. All choices are well thought out and there are hardly any sitters. The questions stay away from tiny details and do a great job at testing basic concepts in a somewhat difficult fashion - ideal for USMLE step 2 preparation in my opinion.
Guess that'll be it.

Book Description
This internationally famous and best-selling textbook of general (or internal) medicine is renowned for providing a rational and easily understood basis for the practice of clinical medicine. Since it was first published this comprehensive text has met the requirements of several generations of medical students preparing for their examinations, while serving as a valuable reference for doctors in training. Rather than page after page of dense text, this reference makes finding information a snap by featuring lavish, colorful visual information. Extensive tables, crib boxes, MRI images, and x-ray films accompany each chapter's succinct discussions. The book's clear organization and color-coded chapters make it simple to find just the information you need, when you need it.

Good deal.......2007-05-17
Good figures, nice organizarion, a bit short in therapeutics, but a great book overall.
I was really surprised to see that people didn't like it. We loved it........2006-11-12
Once you get on the wards, this is by far the best book. It helps you with physical examination in the opening of each chapter, then lists symptoms and works outward from there. This, while people complained about it meaning that material is repeated in the disease sections, is INCREDIBLY helpful when you are new. It tells you the differential diagnosis for each symptom and what the workup should be. It's not as involved and impossible as Harrison (less research and "cytokine" oriented) but practical. I was the only one with this book and everyone, including the attendings, always wanted to use it. It also mentions the major EBM clinical trials - so you always look good about knowing what trial the guidelines come from and when they refer to them, you know what they mean.
I was really surprised to see that so many people didn't like it. That said, the nephrology chapter was relatively weak, and lots of the subspecialties as well, and it is definitely not a basic pathophysiology book or basic science text - but as a textbook of Internal Medicine, it was really good, friendly for students, and above all, PRACTICAL.
Pretty Good.......2006-01-27
Davidson's Principles and Practices of Medicine is a good overview of the different branches of internal medicine. In particular, Respiratory, Cardiolovascular, Gastrointestinal and Nervous system are well organized, concise and quite informative. It is not a very good source for infectious diseases, rheumatology, nephrology or psychiatry.
I like how the book is organized into a brief introduction to organ physiology, major manifestation of diseases and individual diseases. The section on Liver diseases maybe the best source for learning the subject in this category of books. It might be worth borrowing/buying this book just for that.
Not so well organised.......2005-07-08
I decided to read this book for my final examinations in medicine. I found it hard to read, primarly because of the "Major manifestations" sections. Having theses sections in the book means that it is written about each disease in at least two different places and therefore there are many repetitions. Also there are too many boxes and tables (usually I really like tables and figures, but not when they are too many). After a few chapters I gave up and changed to another book, which was much better organized (Kumar and Clark).
Mediocre Joker.......2005-03-13
Unless you are partial to "bri-ish" colloqial terms like foetal and oeosphagus this book is a waste of time. It takes up too much space on my book shelf. Read Big Robbins, it's all in there. I only read this book because I had to for school.

The new edition of Schwartz's Principles of Surgery has become the text of choice for all surgeons and residents. And now, a self-assessment and board review book has been developed to accompany the field's new classic. Featuring more than 1400 questions complete with answers and rationales, this is not a review of Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, but a comprehensive review supported by the content from the main text.
Customer Reviews:
Nice review book........2007-06-04
The newer edition follows the latest version of Schwartz. Questions are different then the old book, however the last 5 or so questions in each chapter are from the previous version of the same book. Some explanations to answers are excellent, with resources, other's don't really answer WHY a certain answer is picked for the quesiton asked. Overall, its' a good book to have. I would suggest it.
