If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Good education and self-care manual........2007-06-28

In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.

I believe anyone should consult their physician prior to following the advice laid out in this book. Only you and your physician can really be sure what's in this book will work for you. However, I still view this as a must buy for the general public. It is very informative, full of great advice, and is an easy read. This book is full of great advice on just about every aspect of your body. A great book to have around the house, and one that could change your life for the better.

I've read this book and it has really changed my outlook on my body. You really need to get to know how your system works in order to get the best from it. Through this book, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen helped to give me a thorough understanding of the human body. I am a huge fan of their work and am so excited to be attending one of their five special health care workshops this summer. These workshops will offer education on the human body and better weight and health management. The name if the tour is "It's all about you" and that's the frame of mind I'm in right now. I am ready to put myself and my health at the center of my life. I hope you can join me in getting to learn from and possibly meet Dr. Oz.

great stuff, esp. on stress.......2007-05-26

I found this book very useful for my personal productivity consulting, mainly their section on stress. In particular, the authors' ideas on Important But Manageable events (IBMs) and Nagging Unfinished Tasks (NUTs) were fascinating, with the latter being what adds most to the aging.

Scott Eblin's book brings an integrated approach to succeeding at the next level. His perspective "from the balcony" of having worked as a Fortune 500 executive himself, takes a big picture approach to success. Scott gives the reader simple, specific tactics to succeed at higher levels in organizations AND the encouragement to look beyond tactics and explore other key behaviors that are critical to succeeding at the next level. Among the more innovative--he suggests establishing mental, physical, spiritual and relational routines and encourages recalibrating your perspective. Well written and fun, this book is a must read for a new exec and a great refresher for established leaders too.

Scott Eblin's book offers valuable advice to the newly arrived member of the management team about how to navigate in unfamiliar, executive territory. THE NEXT LEVEL is highly readable, mercifully devoid of acronyms and MBA-speak. It offers concrete examples of how those who aspire to be executives can unwittingly shoot themselves in the foot.

Reading and - more importantly, heeding - Eblin's advice will better position you to become an executive. If you already are an executive, the same approach will elevate your skills.

An excellent primer for the rising executive.......2007-04-25

I recently had the opportunity to work with Scott in a group coaching environment for rising executives at a Fortune 500 company. The coaching focused on the practical skills needed to advance from being a star individual performer to an executive with broader responsibilities and perspective.

If you don't have the opportunity to work directly with Scott, The Next Level is a superb road map for establishing an "executive foundation." Scott organizes The Next Level around three principles: personal presence, team presence and organization presence. Under each of these principles, Scott dispenses practical advice and actionable steps that lead to improved performance.

The Next Level succeeds where other leadership books fail by encapsulating practical advice on what executives need to know as they transition into a new role. While recent books on leadership by the likes of Jack Welch, Michael Useem and others provide inspiring stories and well reasoned academic perspectives, they do not provide the concise road map I am looking for.

The format of the book and Scott's writing style make The Next Level an indispensable companion for rising executives.

A real disappointment............2007-04-18

As a Human Resource professional I was looking for a book that I could use that would help new and emerging managers and executives with their transitions into their new roles. This book was a disappointment. While some of the points were good and insightful, the content could have been covered in a feature length article instead of the book format. Also, the testimonies from the other executives were tedious and unrealistically presented. They may all be quite true but the real world does not work in such a straight-forward, linear fashion with few roadblocks, detours, or major frustrations.

I did, however, get some pithy slogans I can use in my discussions with colleagues while I wait for someone to write the business book summary......wait, it's already been done. So, get that, save your time, and you will learn about as much from the summary than from reading the full-length book version.

I found "The First 90-Days" written by Michael Watkins to be more practical and actionable than this offering. I also am looking forward to Goldsmith new book, "What Got You Here Won't Get You There" hoping it might be the one I can recommend.

Don't waste your time or money........2007-03-20

Ok I read this book and this other book called Fashion For Profit. This author obivously does not sound like she has really worked in the garment industry. It would be very scary to start a business taking advice from this book. It kind of reminds me of that old sewing lady professor you have in home economics class trying to tell you like you are a 4 year old trying to run a company, scary stuff if you ask me. I got all I ever needed out of Fashion For Profit. That book is strictly business. It's twice as much ,but you get what you pay for. Apparently the author of Fashion for Profit has been voted numerous times in the top 10 most influential in the California Apparel Industry by the California Apparel News. Bottom line you get what you pay for.

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting their own fashion design business. It answers any and all questions and best of all it provides resources that we all need (especially if we have no one to guide us). This is a wonderful book for anyone thinking about entering into the retail business on your own. It cover the basics so you know what elements to consider before you take the plunge. Other than this book, you still need to do quite of abit of research on your own.

Excellent Resource.......2007-03-29

Every year, medical mistakes cause an estimated 44,000 to 98,000 fatalities - at least twice the number claimed by drunk driving. Another 40,000 people also die and 1.3 million are seriously hurt because of medication mishaps - many due to doctor or pharmacist error.

The solution, say these physicians? Become a "smart patient." Arm yourself with information, ask questions and participate in every healthcare decision, from hospital choice to medication management. This book is an excellent resource for doing just that.

Help navigating the healthcare maze .......2007-03-12

We've all got a vested interest in the healthcare system. Some of us just don't know it yet - or worse still, don't appreciate that fact. We are all destined to fall foul of the healthcare system at some stage in our lives, so if you don't want to be a victim of the system, this book is a must read for you.

If you are involved in healthcare, then much of what is contained within these pages sounds pretty much like common sense. Stuff many healthcare professional already do. But, if you have little experience with 'The System' then you're going to need all the help you can get. And as the book goes to great lengths to explains, it's better to be ready before the need arises.

The book is fun to read - although sometimes the content is pretty scary - and is somewhat irreverant. A style that I enjoyed. The content is excellent and very helpful. It's not a book to flick through, it does try and involve you - the future patient - in taking control of your healthcare. While it may not save your life, it may help you get a better health outcome by helping you navigate successfully the healthcare maze.

Medical Mistakes - Stopping Them Is Up To Us.......2007-03-06

Medical mistakes are a disaster. And we're not just talking about sensational boo boos like amputating the wrong leg or pumping an allergic patient full of penicillin. It's all the little errors that accumulate in a person's medical life that these two popular health authors are out to correct. It's up to each individual to take charge of the quality and scope of their own health and healthcare. They need to become "The Smart Patient."

Poor communication between patient and doctor, incomplete or inaccurate health histories, small mistakes that get propagated through our health records, and incomplete understanding of the surgical or pharmaceutical options available to each of us, these are error and omissions that can, and occasionally do kill. As a fellow physician, I have seen all too often, how a misspoken or misspelled word has been allowed to misguide doctors and misdirect treatment.

In my opinion, You The Smart Patient is a terrific roadmap for the average, healthy patient wanting to scour their health record clean of misleading errors, to flesh it out with useful personal information and to prevent new inaccuracies from contaminating it in the future.

The writing style, as in all the "YOU" books, mixes health information with a lot of chatty humor and busy cartoons. making for a stimulus-rich book reading experience. For the reader who can take it in as fast as they can deliver it, this can be a bit distracting. But the information is all there. This is a comprehensive treatment of the subject, outlining what you must do to interact safely with our imperfect healthcare system.

We all know it pays to be a savvy consumer and that ignorance is costly. But nowhere is the cost of consumer ignorance higher than in medicine. Empowering the patient is a dominant message in many of the most popular health books. You The Smart Patient is a one of your best roadmaps to that empowerment.

Comprehensive book with great tips.......2007-05-06

Even though we recently had a Realtor walk through the house and make suggestions on minor improvements, I bought this book in case there were some things she didn't mention. The book is easy to read and nicely organized. It explains how to target your house to the buyers it will likely attract and how to how to look at your house from a buyer's perspective. It also includes a brief section on the selling process.

The book explains that a seller should make minor structural and cosmetic repairs, which any Realtor will tell you. But it has a handy checklist of all parts of the home to go through. It then delves into how to de-clutter and how to "stage" the house for selling. It also includes a checklist of things to do before anyone sees the house. As someone who has recently looked at several houses on the market to buy, I can attest there really is an emotional hook that some of this staging provides. These truly are inexpensive or free things (such as putting a bowl of fruit out, playing soothing music, etc.) that can subliminally attract a buyer. The suggestions are tailored to people with all budgets for fixing up before selling. It does not suggest major upgrades but suggests things like repairing broken bathroom tile as opposed to retiling the entire bathroom. Some of these things are no-brainers, but it was helpful reinforcement from what the Realtor said.

There is a section on how to market the home and explains estimated costs. It also explains what happens when the house is in escrow and what needs to be done in a short timeline. It explains how to keep the buyers motivated and calm while still getting what the seller needs out of the deal.

One of the best things about this book is that it repeatedly encourages the seller to put things into perspective. Yes, the idea is to sell the house as quickly as possible and make the most profit, but this book shows the pitfalls about haggling over $100 and how it can make prospective buyers walk away from a deal.

This book doesn't contain any miracle advice and some of the advice is obvious. However, it's an easy read and an inexpensive book that will probably end up helping sellers make more money at selling time. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the real estate process and maximize profit without spending an inordinate amount of time or money.

Here is Ready Set Sold! in one sentence: Make your house look like a model home before you put it on the market. That covers chapters 6 through 12, and is heavily emphasized in all of the other chapters as well.

Of course, making your house look like a model home probably means spending thousands. I know it's going to for me, even for my modest place. Corbett's mantra is that the more you do to make your house a model home, the more money you'll get when you sell it. The amount that you put into fixing the place up, with painting, new furniture if necessary, and a zillion other details large and small, will more than be made up for by the eventual selling price that you can command.

Hmmm...but is this really true? I don't know. I'm in California and everyone I talk to, including realtors, tell me that just about the ONLY thing that will command a higher selling price is a room addition (impossible for my house). Everything else is just wasted money. That doesn't mean you shouldn't clean up clutter and make sure things look nice and spiffy, but spending thousands of dollars on new furniture, cabinetry, and so on is unnecessary.

I'm not sure I buy into the gung-ho "It will cost more up front, but it'll all pay off in the end!" mantra that this book feeds you constantly. Welcome to hear any comments from people (especially in CA) that have actually followed this book to the letter and ended up with verifiable results.

This is the ONLY book you'll need to sell a home sucessfully. Period. Corbett's blend of humor and personal stories make for a fun read, and he's got an enormous repertoire of ideas that will help you do exactly what the book promises: sell for the most money!

Way to go!

This book gave me more information that I ever could have needed for starting up an Ebay business and I will continue to use it as a reference and guide for many of the troubling questions that arise in the cyber-business world.

The authors gave you more resources than you can imagine as well as detailing the benefits of becoming an Ebay Power Seller. It's amazing how much information they crammed between the pages and how amazingly detailed and forthcoming they were with the information. I was surprised to see the multiple lists for valuable online resources, and for those of us who learn best by seeing things in action-- they even have screen-shot pictures in the book with the corresponding URLs to the areas that can give you the most information.

As stated before, this book has a permanent place on my shelf as a reference guide to Ebay and beyond. Even if you're a current seller on Ebay, looking to upgrade your status to a Power Seller, give this book a shot. It could give you the extra boost you need for driving your business toward its goals and setting you on the right paths toward them.

I loved this book, and I've read lots of eBay books. Unlike some other writers these guys give you the straight story--the good with the bad--and don't make a lot of pie in the sky promises. This really keeps you centered, and realistic. I found some great tips for sourcing, which is a real challenge for all the sellers I talk to. There were also helpful tips on auction management, customer service, and selling internationally. The profiles of actual PowerSellers and many quotes and anecdotes really made this a good read.

My best eBay book investment to date........2006-08-22

As you can see from my Me page, User ID harleyglasses. I have read many eBay related books. This one tops my list for may reasons. Althought they are not powersellers, Brad and Deb don't pretend to have invented the information in their book, they start off by thanking all of the Powersellers and other professionals that contributed to the book. I might add that many are in the top 100 sellers on eBay and are members of PeSA, the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance. Brad and Deb have all the right connections :-)

This book is packed with information that you can use, The chapter introductions to sellers will motivate you. Brad and Deb's book encouraged me to start my own me page and helped develope processes that I use today. They are solid no bull writers that practice what they preach, I'm sure if they wanted to , with all the information they have gathered, they could be one of the top ten sellers on eBay, but you can definately tell when reading their books that their passion is writing about eBay and technology.

I can't wait for their next book, "eBay PowerSeller Million Dollar Ideas"

I've read some corny hashed together books on eBay and can honestly say Brad and Deb's is the best out there and that's why it sits on the #1 position on the book list on my Me page.

Belongs on your bookshelf.......2006-08-23

The Rites of Passage belongs on anyone's bookshelf who's interested in actively managing their careers and gain that extra edge. Even if you're not close to $100k, the book gives you valuable insight into that realm. Understanding your boss and your boss' boss will make you a more valuable employee and may advance your career more than you realize.
If you are at $100k+ I can't imagine successfully managing your career without Lucht's insight. His decades of experience will help you manage transitions properly and in a proactive manner.
My only minor gripes are (1) The typesetting. I have a nagging feeling he did this himself, it could definitely be done better (2)The minor section on usage of the Internet is dated and could be done better. I doubt John had someone appropriate look this over. Still, he earns top rating.

Truly useful advice that's hard to find elsewhere.......2006-02-09

In close to 600 pages that are much denser than most business and self-help books, John Lucht doles out a thorough treatment of every topic you'd expect to see, and then some.

Lucht's description of the executive recruitment business is espeicially illuminating - I would have distributed my resume far too freely if I hadn't read this book. Several chapters are dedicated to finding recruiters, separating the good from the bad, and recruiter interactions.

Of course, there is also plenty of networking, interviewing, and resume-writing advice. It seems that Lucht approached this book as if writing his own resume: it's jam-packed with facts, and doesn't mince words; it has a flowing narrative style punctuated by headlines for easy scanning; it touts his credibility, accomplishments, and recruiting services without inflated, ambiguous adjectives.

It's not perfect, though. Lucht overhypes the subscription services on his Web site, ritesite.com. He repeats certain points mind-numbingly often. He suggests that people include marital status, height, and weight on resumes; as a small, single woman, I doubted that. Some of his internet job search suggestions are already outdated, and his preference of old-fashioned direct mail is questionable for technology industry jobs. But given his vast experience, his opinions are certainly valid. And most of his suggestions are painstakingly justified by facts and examples.

I recommend buying the accompanying Executive Job-Changing Workbook. It provides additional resume and interview coaching, and its worksheets are useful tools for organizing thoughts.

Indispensible advice.......2005-11-03

I am in the salary range that this book is targeted at and I can confidently say that there is no other job search book like it. Most job search books try to be evrything to everybody and therefore end up dispensing advice that's applicable to people searching for jobs in the $30K to $60K salary range. There's nothing wrong with that advice but it's useless to people seeking jobs that pay well over $100K.

John Lucht walks the reader step-by-step through all of the activities required to successfully find a new job and shatters a lot of myths along the way. Like many others, I have been promoted several times within my own company so the last time I actively searched for a job, I was making about 1/4 the salary that I do now. Although I thought I knew everything I needed to know to search for a new job, this book made it clear how wrong I was. What really impressed me is that as much focus is placed on discussing your possible weaknesses as is placed on strengths. At this salary range, you need to anticipate everything that a prospective employer might hold aganst you. Mr. Lucht goes through all of these (even being overweight) and offers indispensable advice on how to deal with each. Similar focus is placed on identifying and effectively selling your greatest accomplishments to persuade a prospective employer why you would be their best choice.

Following the advice presented in this book will require a lot of hard work. But the advice is so good that the work is certain to eventually result in a job offer (assuming you have the qualifications - no book can overcome that). I would also add that purchasing the companion workbook is a must.

This is the book that puts it all together. If you have used recruiters before, then this book is a must read. It has such an amount of helpful information that it is very difficult to call out any one specific point. If you aspire to be a CEO some day, or are striving towards the top rung of that corporate ladder, this book will help you get there. You get to see the hiring process for the upper level executives. And, it is really helpful and beneficial for anyone who has any degree of business experience. I whole heartedly recommend it.

Mr. Orban has penned a very useful guide to the oil business. He covers all the important aspects of the industry and packages it especially for the investor. I bought this book to evaluate an oil investment opportunity. Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about the oil business. After reading the book, I felt comfortable enough to invest. The book gave me the knowledge I needed to ask the right questions and to evaluate the fundamental assumptions upon which the investment was based. I'd recommend this book to anyone who knows little about the industry, but wants a good overview to evaluate a potential investment opportunity.

Being a newly acquired employee of the oil and gas industry this has really helped me out in a number of ways. It puts things in very basic terms on what goes on in an oil deal and how all the components of downstream and upstream work together. It has a great section in the book about the tax benefits related to the oil and gas industry. It really should be called "The oil business for dummies" book. I would suggest this book to any one that is a mineral owner or just some one that is interested in investing in an O&G Fund or O&G company.

The book's strategy offers a simple method for identification for properties, including how to approach owners AND lenders. Sending attractive offers such as short sales and how to wait out lender approval. This is a very good read for beginners wanting to enter into the foreclosure market, especially in the current situation of higher interest rates and lower consumer demand for real estate. There will be a spike of foreclosures.

Great Resource! A must read for anyone interested in Flipping houses........2007-04-09

Sebastian Howell explains the art of flipping houses in easy to understand and honest tone. She uses this book to lay out step by step all the things to consider and how to go through the whole process of flipping a house from, "Is this something I might want to do" to Depositing the money in the bank. Not only does she cover the whole process from beginning to end, but she covers all the options available to you at each stage. In doing this she covers the pro's and con's for each option and which people they would be best for and which people should choose another option at that particular stage.

I've read several other books trying to research if flipping is something I could do on the side. Howell puts flipping into perspective for those wanting to do it as their full time job as well as those not quite ready to give up their 9 to 5 jobs. Overall this is a very informative book and a definite resource for those just starting and those who are trying to make the decision... "To flip or not to flip?"

I just bought serveral similar books here. I would say this is the good book worth to reading. The good point is that it does tell something you may not know about flipping, not just giving you some basic ideas.

You've seen all the shows on television that shows the audience how easy people make money flipping houses. But, I'm sure that you've wondered, just like I have, just how possible is it? Well, Sebastian Howell has laid it all out in black and white. The author has described the process in universal terms, meaning you could apply her principles to any geographical area.

This book is easy to understand and deals in both the basics and the more complex material. It starts off with simple explanations and moves on to understanding the market and the business of making money through buying and selling houses. It gives clear definitions of the legal terms and the jargon that you'll come across in the industry. The author also clearly explains the various people you will associate with and their roles on your team. I really appreciated the examples used in the book. They help to clarify the material. The section covered on financing is comprehensive and understandable with tips to pulling it altogether.

One the most beneficial sections in the book is a complete list of what to look for in a `flippable' house. She gives clear instructions of what to take note of, what can work and what might cause some problems. Once you've found the ideal property, she leads you through the negotiating process. She deals with renovating properties and then moves the reader onto the selling process. The added bonus to the book is the comprehensive index at the back.

Fast Real Estate Profits in Any Market by Sebastian Howell

This is an extremely well written and interesting book. One reason I found it credible is that it gives lots of warnings to be cautious, yet details how success in the real estate business is possible. So it's balanced. Another positive comment is that the book explains terms well, so that a complete novice knows what's going on. It's thorough, but never becomes tedious. The book explains that flipping is not only a means to an income, but is very satisfying on other levels. Restoring an old house is a creative endeavour, and providing buyers with a home they love is richly rewarding on an emotional level.

The way this book is written appeals to me and is in sync with my learning style. It's very linear, and discusses the process of flipping step-by-step. It explains clearly the pitfalls you may encounter along the way, and how to address them.

The book includes sample documents, and a comprehensive glossary.

I really can't find a reason to give this book fewer than five stars out of five. I have never even considered a career in real estate, let alone flipping, but I found the book very interesting.
