Robert Ludlum's trademark skills of intricate plotting, breakneck pacing, and high-wire drama are all on display in this gripping thriller. After his twin brother dies in a plane crash, Ben Hartman reluctantly takes his place in the investment firm started by their father, a Holocaust survivor. But then an old college buddy tries to kill Ben on a crowded Zurich street, setting off a chain of events that ultimately leads Ben into the thick of a worldwide conspiracy. Behind it is Sigma, a multinational cartel built on the rubble of World War II by industrialists and financiers bent on exploiting wartime technology and protecting their wealth from the threat of communism.

Accompanied by a beautiful American justice department agent, Ben eludes the assassins on his trail and follows Sigma's tentacles across Europe, to Brazil, Washington, and finally to a sanitarium known as the Clockworks in the Austrian Alps, where the horrifying agenda of a perverted new world order is revealed. Ludlum, who died between the writing and publishing of this book, was a master of the genre he helped popularize, and The Sigma Protocol shows him at the peak of his craft. --Jane Adams

Book Description

After phenomenal bestseller upon bestseller, Robert Ludlum's books still "dominate the field in adventure-drenched thrillers" (Chicago Tribune). Now Ludlum's books are at an all-time high in this new breakneck classic of international intrigue, terrifying deception, and two random strangers who unwittingly hold the fate of the world in their hands.... In Zurich, Switzerland, American investment banker Ben Hartman has arrived on holiday when he chances upon old friend Jimmy Cavanaugh-- a madman who's armed and programmed to assassinate. In a matter of minutes, six innocent bystanders-- and Cavanaugh-- are dead. But when his body vanishes, and his weapon mysteriously appears in Hartman's luggage, Hartman is plunged into an unfathomable nightmare, and suddenly finds himself on the run. Meanwhile in Washington, D.C., Anna Navarro, field agent for the Department of justice, has been asked to investigate the sudden-- seemingly unrelated-- deaths of eleven men throughout the world. The only thing that connects them is a secret file, over a half-century old, linked to the CIA, and marked with the same puzzling codename: Sigma. But as Anna follows the connecting thread, she finds herself in the shadows of a relentless killer who is one step ahead of her, victim by victim. Together she and Hartman must uncover the diabolical secrets long held behind the codename, Sigma. It will threaten everything they think they know about themselves and confirm their very worst fears....

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not authentic enough to be pure and genuine ludlum .......2007-02-07

if compares it to the other vintage novels by ludlum, the writing style - the prose, the narrative, the dialogue, the sentences structure - of this book did not read like pure ludlum. the whole book's arrangement read pretty random and sometimes even messy. only the early part, the beginning of this novel read quite like ludlum's writing style. i think ludlum may have the whole scenario, storyline and the plot drafted in manuscript, but he didn't have time to finish and passed away. about 85% to 90% of this book was finished by a ghost writer, a so-called co-author, but the ludlum estate didn't quite ready to put his name with ludlum himself yet, not like those several novels published later. they all used ludlum's drafts to pen out the whole novel.
the character ben hartman was definitely a creation of ludlum, but i doubt that ludlum really wrote the part of the female fbi agent, anna navarro. he might have drafted a female fbi agent in this novel, but this anna navarro was a deadbeat creation, not particularly read like ludlum used to give us. lot of words and dialogues simply didn't read like what ludlum used to write, they felt contrite, loose, and most of the time, tasteless. because if it's really written by ludlum, once you picked it up and started reading, you'd never possible to put it down. but this book simply didn't have that much fatal attraction; i could put it down to do other things anytime i wanted and, the reading process of this novel sometimes even became funnier: when i pick it up to read again, if i missed one or two pages, i wouldn't mind just read on. that's a serious problem!

2 out of 5 stars Pure literary sugar, even by spy fiction standards.......2006-08-19

Investment Banker with a conscience, Ben Hartman, and special agent Anna Navaro's plot lines and bodies soon become intertwined in their quest for the secrets of Sigma, an elite cabal with roots in Nazi Germany that is bent on world domination. What starts out as reasonable and entrancing enough genre pulp becomes sheer Bond by the end, but there's no denying Ludlum has a gift for keeping the heat turned up from page to page.

If you are new to espionage fiction and have even slightly literary sensibilities, run don't walk to writers like Alan Furst, Graham Greene, or even John Le Carré. But if strong characters aren't a necessity, you are able to suspend your disbelief, and you are lusting for pure literary sugar, you probably won't be disappointed.

Ludlum is a great author for those who typically spend hours in front of the television and tremble in anticipation at the release of the next Hollywood blockbuster, because he provides essentially the same experience in written form. He is a master of the wildly oscillating plot line, but barely approaches apprentice status in any other literary area. I found myself cringing in embarrassment for the author at many points, but to his credit I was compelled to continue turning the pages until I had reached the end. It's like candy, you can't stop eating it but feel ill once it's gone.

If you are a die hard Ludlumite I admit this is my first foray. Please point me to a better example of his work if one exists, otherwise I'll invest my time elsewhere and catch up on Mr. Ludlum by proxy when the next "Bourne" film comes out.

2 out of 5 stars A sinister plot, worthy of Dr. Evil.......2006-07-28

The book starts out well enough when banker Ben Hartman, in Switzerland on business, runs into an old college buddy who tries to kill him. Then through a series of accidental discoveries, narrow escapes, and unbelievable coincidences, Hartman learns that practically everybody he knows, and everyone new he meets, is involved in an evil cabal bent on world domination.
When you finally find out who the criminal mastermind is, it seems like something only Austin Powers' nemesis Dr. Evil could have pulled off. Without giving too much away - I have to say that the ending involves the hero attempting a daring rescue from the villain's heavily-guarded, secret mountain lair. And of course there is a scene where the villain feels the need to carry on a long monologue to explain his evil plot to the hero. Yeah baby, yeah!

5 out of 5 stars Great suspense and what good books should be - Sigma Protocol.......2006-02-07

This was one of the best books I've read in a long time. The suspense starts in the first chapter and doesn't let down till the very last chapter. Many twists and turns, you never know whats going to happen next (In a good way). I love the way Ben and Anna come together to conquer and understand Sigma. Wow, I loved this book and it is a re-read potential.

4 out of 5 stars All Ludlum or not, this is a ripping tale!.......2006-02-04

As other reviewers have stated, Ludlum passed away at the time of the publication of this novel. Unfortunately, we may never know what other voice has been mingled with Ludlum's to complete this tale. Honestly speaking, I believe this to be the case because the story is actually better than I have come to expect from Ludlum. No disrespect intended, but I feel this work is actually above his standard.

There is certainly a few moments of unbelievable plotting and characterization, but who cares when the ride is such a rip. At first you think you're reading a typical espionage thriller and eventually come to realize it's more than that, much more. For New World Order conspiracy fans you're in for a treat. Ludlum et al's take on an old plot is so fresh and intrigueing you are left speechless. I'll just say this, if you have ever wondered if the Nazi's survived WWII you will REALLY wonder after reading The Sigma Protocol. God help us if there's any truth to this plot.
